Secret WhatsApp messages show co-ordinated campaign to oust Antoinette Lattouf from ABC
The ABC sacked broadcaster Antoinette Lattouf after a high-level and co-ordinated letter-writing campaign from pro-Israel lobbyists that directly targeted the corporation's chair, Ita Buttrose, and managing director David Anderson.
Dozens of leaked messages from a WhatsApp group called Lawyers for Israel show how members of the group repeatedly wrote to the ABC demanding Lattouf be sacked, and threatened legal action if she was not.
According to an unlawful termination claim Lattouf later filed, ABC managers told her the morning program had been well received by audiences. But on the third day of her contract, according to the claim, she was told she was sacked, with her boss, Elizabeth Green, saying the order had come from "above me". The stated reason, according to Lattouf's claim, was that she had reposted a Human Rights Watch report saying Israel was using starvation as a weapon of war.
Lattouf now alleges she was sacked illegally for her political opinions, as a result of racism and after a campaign by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry. A key question in her unlawful termination case is likely to be whether the ABC acted due to external lobbying or because Lattouf had breached internal ABC policies.
Screenshots from the Lawyers for Israel WhatsApp group, which has 156 members, show a co-ordinated letter-writing campaign that became intense during the days Lattouf was on air. A stream of letters were sent on her second day, and on the third day - the day she was sacked - one of the group's administrators, Sydney conveyancing lawyer Nicky Stein, sent a message at 6.54am entitled "Action of the day: call to action".
This post urged group members to target Communications Minister Michelle Rowland and copy in the ABC ombudsman, the board and Anderson, adding: "It is important ABC hears not just from individuals in the community but specifically lawyers so they feel there is an actual legal threat.
"I have basically written to them and told them I expect a proper response, not a generic one, by [close of business] today or I would look to engage a senior counsel. I know there is probably no actionable offence against ABC but I didn't say I would be taking one - just investigating one. I have said that they should be terminating her employment immediately."
Stein's letter to the ABC and the minister said: "Anything short of terminating [Lattouf's] position would not be sufficient."
At 9.51am that day, another group administrator, Lindy Blashki, wrote that "Ita Buttrose replied to 7 of our letters yesterday". About 90 minutes later at 11.15am, Stein posted her response from Buttrose. Lattouf was sacked about 1.40pm that day.
Lattouf and her lawyer, Bornstein, both declined to comment on the leaked messages. An ABC spokesperson said the national broadcaster had "a transparent complaints process and responds accordingly, regardless of the source of the complaint".

ABC journalist under investigation
Tom Joyner caused media firestorm
The ABC journalist who caused a media firestorm after dismissing reports of Jewish babies being beheaded by Hamas terrorists is now under investigation.
ABC director David Anderson, who appeared before the Communications Legislation estimates hearing on Tueday, confirmed the broadcaster had launched an internal investigation into Tom Joyner's conduct in the Middle-East.
The move comes after he sent a text to several hundred other journalists across the world that read: 'the story about the babies is bulls**t'.

Elon Musk responds to ABC's decision to withdraw majority of accounts from Twitter
Elon Musk has condemned the ABC's mass exodus from his social media platform in the latest stoush between the public broadcaster and Twitter
Twitter boss Elon Musk has accused the ABC of wanting "censorship" after the public broadcaster's decision to abandon the social media platform en masse.
The public broadcaster announced it would close most of its official Twitter accounts from Wednesday.
It claimed a number of reasons were behind the move including a "vast majority" of its social media audience being based on other platforms such as Facebook and YouTube.
Following the announcement the Twitter boss took to his platform - now known as X - to blast the public broadcaster.
"Well of course they prefer censorship-friendly social media," Musk said.
"The Australian public does not."
In a statement defending the decision, ABC Managing Director David Anderson also claimed leaving the platform would limit its exposure to "toxic interactions" adding Twitter had "reduced its trust and safety teams".
"Additionally, it is introducing charges which make the platform increasingly costly to use," he said on Wednesday.
Musk's brutal rebuke of the decision comes after a clash over Twitter's disclosure labels which described the public broadcaster as "government-funded media".
In response, the ABC told SkyNews.com.au in April it did not have "any plans to shut down" its Twitter accounts and said it was liaising with the platform regarding the new labels.
But Musk defended the move - which was applied to multiple government-funded media accounts all across the world - and said Twitter's goal was "simply to be as truthful and accurate as possible".
The labels were later dropped.
ABC's self-removal from Twitter comes a month after it announced as many as 100 jobs cuts as part of a major restructure to a digital-first model.
Over the next five years, the ABC will invest more resources in made-for-digital content and journalism across platforms such as ABC iView, ABC Listen and ABC News.
According to Mr Anderson over the next four years the ABC is set to see the strongest audience growth on TikTok, a platform recently criticised by a senate committee investigating foreign interference.
The Chinese-based company fronted the joint standing committee earlier this month where it was grilled over its data collection processes and an incident where TikTok spied on an American journalist in a bid to track internal leaks.

ABC accused of 'grooming' kids after drag queen appeared on Play School
The ABC has been accused of "grooming" children after having an Aussie drag queen appear on Play School to read a book about a girl wearing pants.
Liberal Senator Alex Antic has accused the ABC of "grooming" children by allowing a drag performer Courtney Act to read a children's book on Play School about a girl who likes to wear trousers.
The claim sparked outrage in Senate estimates on Tuesday, with Greens Senator Sarah Hanson Young suggesting it was an entirely inappropriate use of term.
"Heavens above - girls wearing pants. That is the level of rubbish you are putting forward," Senator Hanson-Young said.
But Senator Antic doubled down on the criticism, suggesting if she didn't like it she could leave the room.
"The program was rated G and has been heavily promoted on TV and on the app. Why is the ABC grooming children with this sort of adult content," Senator Antic said.
Grooming traditionally refers to when someone builds a relationship, trust and emotional connection with a child or young person so they can manipulate, exploit and abuse them.
But that characterisation was entirely wrong and offensive in the context of a children's story about a girl who likes to wear pants, Senator Hanson-Young said.
Earlier, Senator Antic suggested the ABC was encouraging "gender dysphoria" by allowing a drag performer to read a children's book on playschool.
The Spectacular Suit, by Kat Patrick, is about a young girl called Frankie who is preparing for her birthday party, but all her party dresses feel wrong. She ends up feeling comfortable wearing pants.
Senator Antic told Parliament what was being discussed was not 'dressing up' but a more adult concept.
"Cross dressing. Let me ask you this, does ABC agree that transgender or cross dressing are adult concepts?," he asked.
In response, the ABC managing director David Anderson rejected the assertion.
"Senator, I don't see that as grooming children with our content," he said.
"That particular program is reading from a book that is about dressing up so I think ...
Senator Antic then interjected, "Female children in male children's clothing, you think that's not ..."
Before he could finish, Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young told the Parliament the complaint was a joke.
"You mean young girls wearing pants? Seriously," she said.
"It's offensive. It is deeply, deeply offensive."
The Liberal Senator then invited Senator Hanson-Young to leave the room if she didn't like it.
"Grooming is a really serious matter! It is not for being played with by conservative senators to make headlines," she replied
"Sexual assault survivors right around this country will be deeply offended, deeply offended by you playing politics."

Dry pastures force Texas ranchers to slaughter ever more cows
CROCKETT, Texas (Reuters) - With almost all of Texas in drought, ranchers are sending ever more cattle off to slaughter, a trend likely to increase beef prices over the long term due to dwindling supply from the largest cattle region in the United States.
Since mid-July, more than 93% of Texas has been in drought, according to the United States Drought Monitor. As of mid-August, more than 26% of Texas was at the highest level, characterized by widespread loss of pastures and crops as well as water shortages.
While conditions are especially acute in Texas, about 54% of all U.S. cattle were in some form of drought as of Aug. 16, up from 36% a year earlier. Cattle slaughter is high nationwide, temporarily increasing supply but portending tighter supplies in future years.
Paul Craycraft, co-owner of the East Texas Livestock Auction in Crockett, said dry pastures are depriving cattle of an important food source, while making it more expensive for ranchers to supplement their herds' diet with hay and feed.
"We've had I don't how many 100-degree (38 C) days and you can see out here, you know, the grass is gone," Craycraft said. "The cows are beginning to lose weight. The cows are weak because there's no protein. So we're getting rid of a lot of cows."
About 75% of the cows sold at auction the past two months have been sent to the slaughterhouse, Craycraft said, up from 30% to 40% in normal years.
Wesley Ratcliff, founder of Caney Creek Ranch in Oakwood, said he got an early start selling 50 of his 500 cows this year as the drought worsened.
"They were older mama cows and they might have gone and had another baby for us," Ratcliff said. "But rather than wait on them to have another baby, we went on to ship them to the meat factory."
Texas A&M University agricultural economist David Anderson said consumers can expect higher prices long-term due to what is happening in Texas, which according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture has more than 4.5 million beef cows, or 14% of the U.S. inventory.
"The pressure will be on for higher prices, higher cattle prices, higher beef prices over the next several years as the effects of this are felt," Anderson said. "We're going to face tighter supplies of beef. And tighter supplies of beef, with nothing else going on, means higher prices."

'Very complicated matter': ABC bans term 'apartheid' in coverage of Israel/Palestine conflict
Australian Broadcaster ABC has announced that they will not allow the use of the word 'apartheid' in their coverage of Israel and Palestine in an effort to "be as objective as possible."
The network has also noted the term's "specific meaning in South African history" as part of its reasoning for the move, according to an "internal advisory note" reported in the Australian.
While some of the network's coverage has managed to stay away from using the word, it has still made its way onto the airwaves, recently on 'Q+A' when Palestine advocate Randa Abdel-Fattah accused Israel of being based "on a racial apartheid system," leading to a fiery debate during which the word was used multiple times.
ABC head David Anderson has said the network is closely monitoring its coverage and insists reporters try to remain neutral on social media.
"I will say that when there are conflicts such as this, on very complicated matters, there are certainly things that we've looked into that have already been published to ensure they're accurate," he said.
The network has received complaints from both sides of the argument by viewers, according to Anderson, being accused of having both an anti-Israel stance and anti-Palestine stance. They have received 29 complaints saying they are anti-Israel and 24 alleging they are anti-Palestine in their coverage.
Anderson also revealed some reporters approached him about signing a petition that would call for more "sympathetic coverage" of Palestine, but he pushed back, saying that reporters "should not do anything that otherwise compromises their ability to be seen to be impartial in reporting any matter."
News organizations have been struggling with perceived impartiality in their coverage of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The Associated Press even recently fired reporter Emily Wilder over past social media posts, leading more than 100 colleagues to defend Wilder and condemn her firing. Wilder herself, who is Jewish, claimed she was "hung out to dry" and "defamed as anti-Semitic."
Associated Press managing editor Brian Carovillano, however, defended the decision on Sunday, telling CNN that while the process of the firing may not have been handled well, it was a "unanimous" decision in order for the organization to "maintain our credibility" on coverage of Israel.
"It was a difficult decision, it was not an easy decision, and it was not a personal decision, and we wish her all the best," he said.

Nine's outgoing chief executive Hugh Marks said Facebook's decision was "a real shock" and showed why the code was needed.
"We thought we were having constructive discussions towards an outcome that was going to be positive for all of us. It seems that behind those discussions all the time was Facebook's intent at the end of the day to take this action, maybe even despite an agreement with us," Mr Marks told 2GB radio.
"They are trying to prove how powerful they are. They've certainly proven that. The purpose of the legislation is actually trying to deal with that power, so they are kicking a massive own goal."
ABC's managing director David Anderson said the national broadcaster was affected and was discussing the change with Facebook.
An internal note to News Corp staff sent by executive chairman Michael Miller said Facebook's move would encourage fake news to be spread online.
"You will have also seen this morning that Facebook has used its powers to change its algorithms in a way that punishes Australian news media," Mr Miller said in the email, seen by The Herald and Age.
"This is a move that clearly encourages fake news over reliable news and demonstrates the extraordinary market power Facebook holds. While we are disappointed in Facebook's moves today, we have had months of discussions with them to date, and we will continue to do so."
Facebook's decision follows multiple discussions between Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and the company's global chief executive Mark Zuckerberg.
Mr Frydenberg said on Thursday morning he had spoken to Mr Zuckerberg who had raised further issues with the government's newly proposed laws.
"Yes there are some differences, but let's see if we can work them through," Mr Frydenberg said.
Industry sources familiar with the government's discussions with Facebook said Mr Frydenberg was not given any meaningful notice about Facebook's plans to follow through with its threat.
News outlets with a relationship with Facebook and which post articles in their newsfeed were informed early on Thursday morning that their content would be affected.
A note sent by Facebook Australia and New Zealand's head of news partnerships Andrew Hunter, seen by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, said the tech platform was "disappointed" that it had to follow through with its threat and that it would engage the news outlets further to discuss the changes in the coming days.
Facebook was in talks with news outlets such as Nine Entertainment Co, owner of this masthead, and News Corp Australia about payment for their content over the past two weeks.
But those talks stalled in the past five days because of several sticking points, including explicit provisions in Facebook's contracts that would allow it to blow up any deal if new laws were legislated. The main reason for this is that failure to comply with the code could cost Facebook fines of up to 10 per cent of their local revenue.
Mr Easton said the government's proposed legislation "seeks to penalise Facebook for content it didn't take or ask for".
"This legislation sets a precedent where the government decides who enters into these news content agreements, and ultimately, how much the party that already receives value from the free service gets paid," he said.
Facebook's stance represents a different approach to search giant Google, which had also threatened to exit Australia. Google has since struck multi-million dollar deals with major Australian publishers for the use of their content.

Bitcoin has since taken off as a mainstream investment vehicle in recent years. It climbed above $15,000 on Thursday, hitting the highest level since January 2018. The cryptocurrency has more than doubled year to date.
This week, London-based blockchain analysis firm Elliptic said that it picked up on the massive movement of bitcoin spurred by the DOJ. The company reported 69,369 bitcoins - worth about $1 billion - had been moved out of a bitcoin wallet, which had the fourth-highest balance of any in the world. Tom Robinson, co-founder and chief scientist of Elliptic, said the movement of bitcoins "may represent Ulbricht or a Silk Road vendor moving their funds" but that it "seems unlikely that Ulbricht would be able to conduct a bitcoin transaction from prison." The U.S. agencies were able to track down those illicit funds through a unit within the IRS that specializes in tracing virtual currency transactions. The IRS agents were able to identify 54 new bitcoin transactions executed by the Silk Road, which appear to be proceeds of some of that illegal activity, the complaint said. The agency was then able to trace that money to a specific bitcoin address that appeared to have hacked the bitcoin funds from the Silk Road. While the Silk Road was in operation, thousands of drug dealers and other unlawful vendors used it distribute illegal drugs, unlawful goods and services to well over 100,000 buyers. At the time it was taken down seven years ago, Silk Road had nearly 13,000 listings for illegal drugs and "many more listings" offering illegal services such as computer hacking and murder for hire, according to the complaint. Those generated sales totaling more than 9.5 million bitcoins. The complaint also alleges that the Silk Road used a process to make it harder to track individual transactions of cryptocurrency. Ex-Google exec sent to prison for stealing robocar secrets
SAN RAMON, Calif. (AP) – A former Google engineer has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading to guilty to stealing trade secrets before joining Uber's effort to build robotic vehicles for its ride-hailing service.
The sentence handed down Tuesday by U.S. District Judge William Alsup came more than four months after former Google engineer Anthony Levandowski reached a plea agreement with the federal prosecutors who brought a criminal case against him last August. Levandowski, who helped steer Google's self-driving car project before landing at Uber, was also ordered to pay more than $850,000. Alsup had taken the unusual step of recommending the Justice Department open a criminal investigation into Levandowski while presiding over a high-profile civil trial between Uber and Waymo, a spinoff from a self-driving car project that Google began in 2007 after hiring Levandowski to be part of its team.
Levandowski eventually became disillusioned with Google and left the company in early 2016 to start his own self-driving truck company, called Otto, which Uber eventually bought for $680 million. Before leaving Google, though, Levandowski downloaded a trove of Google's self-driving car technology, resulting in him being facing 33 counts of intellectual property theft. He wound up pleading guilty to once count, culminating in Tuesday's sentencing.
The accusations turned Levandowski, once highly regarded for his early inroads into self-driving cars, into a notorious figure "almost synonymous with greed run amok in Silicon Valley," his own lawyers acknowledged in court documents filed last week. The lawyers argued Levandowski deserved some leniency because there was never any evidence that he used Google's trade secrets while overseeing Uber's self-driving car division. He lost that job in 2017 while asserting his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination when Uber was still defending itself against Waymo's civil lawsuit.
Uber settled its case with Waymo for $245 million a few days into a trial that featured its former CEO, Travis Kalanick, speaking about some of his discussions with Levandowski about the ride-hailing service's desire to win the race to build self-driving cars.
Levandowski, 40, faced a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a $250,000 fine. Besides sentencing Levandowski to 18 months in prison, Alsup fined him $95,000 and order him to pay Waymo $756,499 to reimburse the company for the costs it incurred in helping the government with its investigation. It appears uncertain whether Levandowski will be able to afford to make the payments. He filed for bankruptcy earlier this year after another court upheld a arbitration ruling requiring him to pay Google $179 million, most of which consisted of a bonus he received for his work on self-driving cars.
In its victim statement, Waymo told Alsup that Levandowski's "misconduct was enormously disruptive and harmful to Waymo, constituted a betrayal, and the financial effects would likely have been even more severe had it gone undetected." In documents arguing why Levandowski deserved prison time, U.S. Attorney David Anderson called his theft a "brazen and shocking" act that seemed driven by ego as much as greed.
"Levandowski's actions suggest he wanted to be seen as the singular inventor of the self-driving car, the way Alexander Graham Bell is credited with inventing the telephone," Anderson wrote.

'Greater acts of mayhem': Bomb in van of Jersey City shooters could have killed people five football fields away
The two people who attacked a kosher market in Jersey City, New Jersey, had a bomb in their U-Haul van so powerful that it could have killed or injured people up to 500 yards away. FBI special agent in charge Greg Ehrie said at a Monday press conference that the bomb discovered inside the vehicle would have resulted in a large explosion. He also said that the duo had enough bomb construction materials to have built a second explosive device, according to NJ.com.
The gunmen, 47-year-old David Anderson and 50-year-old Francine Graham, were killed during a shootout with law enforcement on Dec. 10. The violence that day began when the two fatally shot Jersey City Police Department Detective Joseph Seals, 40, in the head. From there, the pair headed to a nearby kosher market and killed three civilians. Once the scene was cleared, investigators found the U-Haul van that the couple was in possession of and discovered an unexploded but viable homemade explosive device. "I do this because my creator makes me do this and I hate who he hates," read a note that was found along with the bomb.
The ideology of Anderson and Graham was partially inspired by the Black Hebrew Israelite movement, the members of which believe that they are the true decedents of the ancient Israelites and God's chosen people, not practitioners of Judaism. Despite the connection or possible inspiration, authorities believe the two worked alone in the attack. The Southern Poverty Law Center said of the religion that "there is a rising extremist sector within the Hebrew Israelite movement whose adherents believe that Jews are devilish impostors and who openly condemn whites as evil personified, deserving only death or slavery."
Prior to the Jersey City attack, Anderson and Graham had also researched attacking a Jewish community center in Bayonne, New Jersey. Authorities on Monday said that the two planned for more bloodshed in hopes of sowing fear in the Jewish community. U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito called the attack "profoundly un-American" and an "evil and cowardly act." "We know now that they planned greater acts of mayhem on both communities," he said. According to Carpenito, video from the kosher market recorded Anderson saying, "They stole our heritage, they stole our birthright, and they hired these guys to stop us."
Authorities also said that the duo were suspects in two other crimes prior to the Jersey City attack. The first was when they fired two bullets at a Jewish person driving a vehicle near Newark. Although the back window of the car was shot out, no one was injured in the attack. They are also accused of killing taxi driver Michael Rumberger on Dec. 7. Investigators said they bludgeoned him and then shot him in the head, leaving his body in the trunk of his car. Rumberger's blood was discovered on a bible belonging to Anderson and Graham.
The two had traveled to Ohio, and Graham legally purchased the weapons used during the kosher market attack. While there, they also trained on how to use the guns, although Anderson had previously served in the Army Reserve. Anderson was not able to purchase the weapons because he is a convicted felon who has spent time in prison on multiple gun charges. The FBI is investigating the shooting as an act of domestic terrorism.

Bomb in Van of NJ Shooting Attack Suspects Could've Killed People 5 Football Fields Away: Officials
The U.S. attorney in New Jersey and the head of the local FBI said Monday that the bomb found in the van of alleged domestic terrorists Francine Graham and David Anderson could have killed or maimed people up to five football fields away.
They also said there was enough material in the van to make a second bomb.
Four innocent people, including a veteran Jersey City police detective and father of five, died in the hail of prolonged gunfire. Most of the victims were found inside the JC Koshoper Supermarket on Martin Luther King Boulevard during what officials have described as a hate-fueled terror spree on Dec. 10.
The officer who died, Det. Joseph Seals, was killed at a cemetery, where authorities said he had gone to meet with a man to talk about the return of a vehicle impounded by police. Details will never be definitive, authoritis said, but investigators believe Seals approached the suspects' van because cops were looking for it in connection with the murder of a livery driver the prior weekend. Cops are still looking into a possible connection between the driver's death and the terror that was unleashed in Jersey City on Dec. 10.
Seals' death first brought law enforcement near the scene of what would become a horrific bloodbath, leaving schools with bullet-riddled windows and the neighborhood locked down.
U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said of Seals, "We believe he threw off a broader plan," and that his actions "probably saved dozens if not more lives."

SAME as with these scum and the Covington Kids, has there been one peep from NWO/Communist-ControlledMockingbird?
From .https://reason.com/2019/01/20/covington-catholic-nathan-phillips-video/
You can judge for yourself. Here is video footage of the full incident, from the perspective of the black nationalists. Phillips enters the picture around the 1:12 mark, but if you skip to that part, you miss an hour of the Black Hebrew Israelites hurling obscenities at the students. They call them crackers, faggots, and pedophiles. At the 1:20 mark (which comes after the Phillips incident) they call one of the few black students the n-word and tell him that his friends are going to murder him and steal his organs. At the 1:25 mark, they complain that "you give faggots rights," which prompted booing from the students. Throughout the video they threaten the kids with violence, and attempt to goad them into attacking first. The students resisted these taunts admirably: They laughed at the hecklers, and they perform a few of their school's sports cheers . ?We now have a 2 hour raw recording of the MAGA kids incident.
. We can see..."Black Activists" are Black Hebrew Israelites yelling Fagg**
.
. This video was saved shortly before being deleted from facebook. It may have possibly been the first backup so the world could see the entire circumstances that lead to a media frenzy over a tiny clip... After Assange's Espionage Act Indictment, Police Move Against More Journalists for Publishing Classified Material
Less than two months after the arrest of journalist Julian Assange, and two weeks after his indictment under the Espionage Act, emboldened governments have sent the police after journalists who've challenged the state. Joe Lauria reports.
By Joe Lauria
in Sydney, Australia
Special to Consortium News
Following the arrest and Espionage Act indictment of Julian Assange a number of police actions against journalists for publishing classified information and other journalistic activity has heightened fears among mainstream journalists that they could be next.
Police in Sydney, Australia on Wednesday raided the offices of the taxpayer-funded Australian Broadcasting Corporation, copying thousands of files related to a 2017 ABC broadcast that revealed allegations of war crimes by Australian special forces in Afghanistan.
Three Australian Federal Police officers and three police technicians entered ABC's Sydney headquarters with a search warrant that named two ABC investigative journalists and the network's news director. The police demanded to look through the journalists' emails, ABC reported.
David Anderson, the ABC managing director, said it was "highly unusual for the national broadcaster to be raided in this way".
"This is a serious development and raises legitimate concerns over freedom of the press and proper public scrutiny of national security and Defence matters," he said. "The ABC stands by its journalists, will protect its sources and continue to report without fear or favour on national security and intelligence issues when there is a clear public interest." John Lyons, ABC's executive editor and head of investigative journalism, tweeted:
Lyons said the federal police were going through dozens of emails with the authority to delete or even change their content. Protagonist Winston Smith's job in Orwell's 1984 was to rewrite news archives.
"I recall writing ages ago about Australian legislation giving the Australian govt power to 'add, alter or delete' targeted material," Australian psychologist and social critic Lissa Johnson told Consortium News."The msm barely batted an eyelid at the time. Now that power is being wielded against the ABC."
Gaven Morris, ABC's news director, said: "Journalism is not a crime."
"Our journalists do a really difficult job, I'm proud of what they do, they do it in the public's interest," he said. "I'd say to all the journalists at the ABC and all the journalists across Australia, don't be afraid of the job you do."….

Australian police raids on national broadcaster, News Corp prompt outcry
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Police raided the offices of Australia's national broadcaster on Wednesday over allegations it had published classified material, the second raid on a media outlet in two days, prompting complaints that the "outrageous" raids hindered media freedom. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said its officers carried out a search warrant at the head office of the government-funded Australian Broadcasting Corp. (ABC) in Sydney on Wednesday. That came a day after police raided the home of a News Corp editor, although the AFP said the raids were unrelated.
"It is highly unusual for the national broadcaster to be raided in this way," ABC Managing Director David Anderson said in a statement. "This is a serious development and raises legitimate concerns over freedom of the press and proper public scrutiny of national security and defense matters," he said. The AFP said the ABC raid was in relation to allegations it had published classified material and followed a referral from the chief of the Australian Defence Force and a former acting defense secretary in 2017. The ABC raid was authorized by a court and based on evidence that provided "sufficient suspicion that a criminal offence has been committed", the AFP said in a statement.
Marcus Strom, president of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance trade union, said on his Twitter account the two raids were "just outrageous". "Police raiding journalists is becoming normalized. It has to stop," he said. The ABC raid was in relation to a series of broadcasts in 2017 about alleged misconduct by Australian troops in Afghanistan, the broadcaster said.
The raid on the News Corp editor related to a 2018 newspaper report that said Australian intelligence agencies wanted to carry out surveillance by accessing people's emails, bank accounts and text messages, domestic media reported. News Corp called the raid on its employee "outrageous and heavy handed", and "a dangerous act of intimidation". The Rupert Murdoch-controlled company said it had "the most serious concerns about the willingness of governments to undermine the Australian public's right to know about important decisions governments are making".
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison was reported as saying he believed in media freedom but that there were also clear rules about the use of classified information. "?It never troubles me that our laws are being upheld," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Morrison as saying.

"ABC lawyers tell AFP: We waive no rights, and reserve the right to take injunction against the warrant," Lyons tweeted.
"The AFP tell us they are interested in 'certain things'."
In a statement, the Australian Federal Police said Wednesday's search warrant "relates to a referral received on 11 July 2017 from the Chief of the Defence Force and the then-acting Secretary for Defence".
The raids were "in relation to allegations of publishing classified material, contrary to provisions of the Crimes Act 1914".
"All AFP search warrants are authorised by a magistrate or an appropriate member of the judiciary. This is the result of supporting documentation or material being presented to the court which provides sufficient suspicion that a criminal offence has been committed," the statement said.
"No arrests are planned today as a result of this activity."
ABC managing director David Anderson said it was "highly unusual" for the national broadcaster to be raided in this way.
"This is a serious development and raises legitimate concerns over freedom of the press and proper public scrutiny of national security and defence matters," he said in a statement.
"The ABC stands by its journalists, will protect its sources and continue to report without fear or favour on national security and intelligence issues when there is a clear public interest."
Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Wednesday said he was not troubled by a federal police raid on the home of Smethurst, arguing all Australians must abide by national security laws.
2GB radio host Ben Fordham also revealed this week that he had been contacted by the Department of Home Affairs about his reporting, with the department investigating how he obtained "highly confidential" information about asylum seeker vessels.
Fordham said the department was seeking his co-operation with the probe, which could become a criminal investigation and "potentially" involve a police raid.
Journalists' union the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance said a second day of raids set a "disturbing pattern of assaults on Australian press freedom" and was an attack on the public's right to know.
"Police raiding journalists is becoming normalised and it has to stop," union official Marcus Strom said.
"These raids are about intimidating journalists and media organisations because of their truth-telling. They are about more than hunting down whistleblowers that reveal what governments are secretly doing in our name, but also preventing the media from shining a light on the actions of government."
Strom said the Coalition and Labor had together created a legal environment that was enabling a "politically motivated assault" on public interest journalism.
Centre Alliance senator Rex Patrick immediately hit out at the latest police raids, saying the ABC's investigation was clearly in the public interest.
"It appears this is the chosen week for a full-blown attack on freedom of the press in this country," he said.
Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young called for an urgent inquiry into press freedom.
"Another day, another AFP raid on Australian journalists. This is a very worrying sign," she said.
"Australians deserve and have every right to know what our [government] is up to."

Ex-Autonomy CFO sentenced in U.S. to 5 years prison over Hewlett-Packard fraud
(Reuters) - The former chief financial officer of British software company Autonomy was sentenced on Monday to five years in prison, after a U.S. jury found him guilty of fraud over the $11.1 billion sale of Autonomy in 2011 to Hewlett-Packard. Sushovan Hussain, 55, was also fined $4 million and ordered to forfeit $6.1 million by U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco. The defendant plans to appeal.
Hussain and former Autonomy Chief Executive Mike Lynch are also defendants in a $5 billion civil fraud trial in London's High Court, where Hewlett-Packard claimed they caused it to overpay for Autonomy by fraudulently inflating its value. That trial began in March and is expected to last several months. Lawyers for Hussain were not immediately available for comment. The office of U.S. Attorney David Anderson in San Francisco had no immediate comment.
U.S. prosecutors accused Hussain, who moved to England at age 7 from his native Bangladesh, of using backdated contracts and other forms of accounting fraud to inflate Autonomy's revenue, in an effort to attract potential buyers. Hussain, who is married and has two daughters, was convicted in April 2018 on 16 wire fraud, securities fraud and conspiracy counts.

Hussain, who is married and has two daughters, was convicted in April 2018 on 16 wire fraud, securities fraud and conspiracy counts.
Prosecutors had sought a 12-year prison term, while Hussain sought no more than one year and one day. Both sides agreed on the fine.
Hussain is scheduled to report to prison on June 15.
Autonomy was the linchpin of former Hewlett-Packard Chief Executive Leo Apotheker's strategy to integrate his company's computer and printer businesses with higher-margin software.
His plan backfired, and Hewlett-Packard took an $8.8 billion writedown a year after buying Autonomy, while accusing Lynch of accounting fraud.
Lynch, who founded Autonomy, was once seen as Britain's answer to Microsoft Corp co-founder Bill Gates.
Hewlett-Packard split in 2015 into HP Inc and Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Co. The latter spun off much of its software business in 2017.
U.S. prosecutors have also criminally charged Lynch and former Autonomy vice president of finance Stephen Chamberlain over the Hewlett-Packard acquisition.
Lynch, through his lawyers, has denied criminal wrongdoing, and blamed the acquisition's failure on Hewlett-Packard. Chamberlain has pleaded not guilty.

A few months ago, on law day, President Trump explained that in the United States, "we govern ourselves in accordance with the rule of law rather than according to the whims of an elite few or the dictates of collective will. Through law, we have ensured liberty. We should not ... take that success for granted."
The President's words are of central importance to the Department of Justice, because the rule of law in America depends on the character of the people who enforce the law.
All executive branch employees take the same oath. The first clause requires us to "support and defend the constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic."
Everyone is familiar with that duty.
But some overlook the final clause: a promise to "well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter."
The first obligation is general. It imposes a duty to pursue the national interest over any personal interest. That applies equally to every government employee.
But the final clause is specific. Everyone recites the same words, but the meaning varies. In order to well and faithfully discharge the duties of "the office," you need to understand your unique responsibilities. What is the mandate of your agency; what is the mission of your component; and how do you add value?
You need to know what you stand for.
In 1940, Attorney General Robert Jackson spoke eloquently about what our Department stands for. He said that "the citizen's safety lies in the prosecutor who tempers zeal with human kindness, who seeks truth and not victims, who serves the law and not factional purposes, and who approaches [the] task with humility."
If you follow that advice, you will remain faithful to our mission.
The mission attracted me to work in this Department, but what I treasure most are the people who faithfully carry out the mission.
I am grateful for your service, and I am honored to work with you in the cause of justice.

The medieval slaughter of innocents representing the single biggest loss of Jewish life since the Holocaust punctured the aura of invincibility that surrounded the Israeli Defence Force. Terror has ushered in widespread trauma leaving a whole nation grieving for the more than 1400 lost and 200 missing. It has left deep psychological scars in the Jewish community in and beyond Israel's shores that may never heal. As a person of Jewish faith who has only ever known of a confident and strong Israel, I never thought I would feel, as my parents did in 1973 during the Yom Kippur war, the existential threat facing Israel. But now I do. As a person of Jewish faith growing up in a tolerant and multicultural Australia, I never thought I would feel, as my grandparents did in 1933, the rising tide of European antisemitism which would consume their families in the flames of the Holocaust. But now I do. I am anguished and anxious about the future. These are indeed the darkest of times. Every day innocent lives are being lost in both Israel and in Gaza. ABC Middle East correspondent Tom Joyner is under investigation over 'bullshit' beheaded baby comment
SOPHIE ELSWORTH - OCTOBER 24, 2023
ABC managing director David Anderson has revealed its Middle Eastern correspondent Tom Joyner is under investigation after he labelled reports about babies being beheaded by Hamas terrorists as "bullshit" in a WhatsApp group with international media.
At Senate estimates on Tuesday, Mr Anderson said the public broadcaster is "certainly looking into it, investigating it."
"I am sorry that happened, and I am sorry that event occurred and that was then distressing to other people as well, it shouldn't have happened," he said.
"He was at the time doing what journalists were doing, and that was trying to verify what sources could back up what claims are being made at the time."
Joyner, who has been reporting on the conflict between Israel and Palestine, told a WhatsApp chat group earlier this month - in comments that have since been deleted - that he disputed reports from around the world about babies being beheaded being true.
Mr Anderson was questioned about the incident by Senator Hollie Hughes who said: "It's embarrassing, as a country, that our representative at our national broadcaster referred to horrific war crimes as bullshit."
Mr Joyner posted on the WhatsApp group: "The story about the babies is bullshit."
The comments were made on the group chat to the more than 600 media representatives sharing information about the attacks in Israel by Hamas terrorists.
Joyner was met with condemnation from many members of the media group, which was set up shortly after the conflict in Israel began.
Mr Anderson acknowledged that Joyner's comments "distressed" people by the language he used in the messages that were leaked to The Australian.
"We will be investigating as it was on social media, and it was reported," he said.
"He has a right to procedural fairness, and we'll go through that."
After the incident was revealed by The Australian, the ABC said management had spoken to Joyner and he had shown remorse.
"Tom recognised the language of his comment was inappropriate and apologised to the group," the ABC said at the time.
Israel later confirmed the reports of babies being burnt and decapitated in Hamas's assault on the Kfar Aza kibbutz and photographs were also shown to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Mr Anderson also said at Tuesday's hearing said he doesn't think the ABC is "anti-Semitic in any way."
After Joyner's comments were made public, the Zionist Federation of Australia's president Jeremy Leibler wrote a letter to the ABC's director of news Justin Stevens and outlined that he was left "stunned and appalled" by the reporter's remarks.
"He was immediately and rightly condemned by the other journalists to whom he made the comment," Mr Leibler said in the letter.
"He must now promptly be denounced and disciplined by the ABC," Mr Leibler said.
Joyner continues to report on the war in Israel.

'Systems and processes failed': ABC boss acknowledges mistake in Alice Springs report
Lisa Visentin and Karl Quinn - February 14, 2023
1/2
ABC managing director David Anderson has admitted its systems and processes failed during the production of a radio report that claimed there were elements of white supremacy at an Alice Springs community forum on social unrest in the town.
The failure was also identified by the newly created ABC Ombudsman's Office, which on Tuesday found the report on the broadcaster's radio current affairs program, AM , on January 31 breached standards of impartiality and accuracy.
Appearing at a Senate estimates hearing on Tuesday, Anderson said the item did not contain all the perspectives necessary for a balanced report of the meeting or sufficient context and he had asked director of news Justin Stevens to investigate how it occurred.
"I do think that the systems and processes we have in place failed in that those checks and measures did not pick up the issue with that story before it was included in the AM package," Anderson said.
"Certainly, when I heard it, I knew that we had a problem with that particular story and I think it's now been corrected and reposted. So the story has now been reproduced by that reporter and then put back online."
The report by ABC Indigenous affairs correspondent Carly Williams aired claims by one attendee as she left the meeting that it was a "disgusting show of white supremacy".
In the first investigation conducted by her office, ombudsman Fiona Cameron identified two breaches of editorial standards - one of impartiality for "unduly favouring one perspective over another" and one of accuracy "by not making reasonable efforts to ensure that material facts were accurately presented in context". The ABC received 19 complaints about the report.
Cameron found the report's focus on one perspective came at the expense of coverage of the broader views and concerns represented at the meeting.
"The report presented one critical perspective on the event, that it was racist, without identifying the range of other concerns and issues expressed by attendees," she found, adding that it "considers that this had the effect of unduly favouring one perspective over all others".
Cameron noted that subsequent reporting on the meeting during the day on the ABC, including on the PM program, did offer a broader perspective on the meeting, but added "this does not mitigate the AM report unduly favouring one perspective".
The radio report claimed the meeting, which had been called to discuss issues of violence in the town, had been attended by "hundreds" of people, when in fact it had been attended by thousands. Given the population of Alice Springs is approximately 32,500, the ombudsman found in its ruling, which was handed to the board on Monday, that the underreported figure "represents a materially different proportion of the population than attendance in the hundreds".

Abuse survivor tells of pain at Peter Hollingworth tribunal
JOHN FERGUSON - FEBRUARY 7, 2023
Child abuse survivor Beth Heinrich has stared down former ?governor-general Peter Hollingworth in an emotional statement read to the tribunal that must ?decide whether to defrock the ?veteran Anglican.
Ms Heinrich said she was vilified by Dr Hollingworth more than 20 years ago when he was widely reported questioning whether she was abused as a ?teenager by a priest who would later become a bishop.
Mr Hollingworth, through his lawyers, complained on Tuesday to the ABC for the second time, arguing the original reporting was wrong and he was not talking about Ms Heinrich as a 14-year-old.
Ms Heinrich was given the opportunity to read her impact statement to the Anglican-inspired tribunal that will decide what, if any, action should be taken over Dr Hollingworth's handling of the abuse issue while Archbishop of Brisbane in the 1990s and when governor-general between 2001 and 2003.
The tribunal is held in secret, but The Australian has previously reported comments from the statement that Ms Heinrich prepared for the inquiry.
The inquiry is also believed to have heard argument about the role that Dr Hollingworth played in a failed mediation in the 1990s involving Ms Heinrich's attacker, the late Donald Shearman. Dr Hollingworth was at the failed mediation nearly 30 years ago.
"You are looking at me and perhaps I look OK on the outside, but that's not how I feel," Ms Heinrich's statement prepared for the tribunal read.
"If I allowed myself to be me I would have to start cutting my arms to show people how much I was hurting. I am afraid to be me because it hurts too much. I feel like I am someone else."
The statement attacked the extraordinary delays in the inquiry, which has run for at least five years.
Ms Heinrich is in her 80s and Dr Hollingworth is 87.
"Of course none of this dragged out drama is necessary," she wrote to the tribunal last year. "It can easily be solved. He should find the integrity, finally do the right thing and quietly resign."
The tribunal has received evidence from several complainants and must determine whether Dr Hollingworth should be punished by the Anglican Church.
Ms Heinrich was sexually abused as a teenager by Shearman, who was later deposed from holy orders. She said Shearman had formed a sexual relationship with her when she was sent to a church hostel. Dr Hollingworth created a storm when he was reported saying: "There was no suggestion of rape or anything like that; quite the contrary. My information is it was rather the other way around."
Lawyers for Dr Hollingworth on Tuesday wrote to ABC managing director David Anderson complaining that the original Australian Story was wrongly edited to create the impression that Dr Hollingworth was accusing a teenage Ms Heinrich of causing her own abuse.
But Dr Hollingworth's lawyers said he was selectively quoted to create the impression he was referring to a child when he claimed he wasn't.
"The ABC knows that its journalism has been vigorously contested through an earlier complaint, yet does not even mention Dr Hollingworth's protests in its reporting,'' the letter states. "He is damned on national television and print when the ABC know, better than anyone, that the line they are running is not true.
"There was a complaint to the ABC managing director at the time in 2005 and I note that by some strange twist of fate that the ABC were never able to produce the unedited tapes of the interviews to examine its editing.
"This issue of the ABC program and its editing has come up on a number of occasions over the subsequent years."
The ABC did not comment on the letter.
The tribunal is continuing.

ABC issues extraordinary apology over Alice Springs stories
SOPHIE ELSWORTH - FEBRUARY 4, 2023
The ABC has issued an extraordinary apology for airing multiple reports on Tuesday claiming there were displays of "white supremacy" at an Alice Springs community meeting.
Since the airing of the broadcasts on Tuesday, pressure has been growing on chair Ita Buttrose and managing director David Anderson - both who have remained silent - despite widespread outrage from the Alice Springs community and political leaders.
On Friday the ABC published an apology and said "ABC news management takes responsibility" for the reports that were broadcast on its AM radio program and Newsradio that provided "an incomplete picture of the event".
"On January 31, the program broadcast a report gathered the previous evening on a community meeting held in Alice Springs to discuss the recent upsurge in violence and to discuss compensation and solutions," the apology said.
"The report included the views of some people who attended the community meeting and their immediate reaction.
"Those views were reported accurately.
"However, this report should have included a broader range of perspectives expressed at the meeting and further information about what was discussed, to provide additional context."
The public broadcaster went on to say: "ABC News apologises to audiences for providing an incomplete picture of the event in this instance.
"Following this report, ABC News published additional coverage of the issue which included a broader range of perspectives and context".
The AM report remains available online but now includes an editor's note and links to additional coverage on the issues in Alice Springs.
The ABC's news division is led by Justin Stevens who was appointed to the role in March last year.
Multiple sources who attended the Alice Springs forum rejected the suggestions made in the reports compiled by its indigenous affairs reporter and included commentary from attendees.
In one of the reports the ABC reporter said, "People were leaving early and streaming out of that Convention Centre in Alice Springs ... one resident who was non-indigenous said the meeting was, quote 'a disgusting display of white supremacy."
The extraordinary apology comes just three days after the ABC stood by the reports and the media team published a statement that read: "Many strong and conflicting views are expressed within the community, including some that are confronting and the news coverage reflects that and doesn't shy away from it".
On Thursday Alice Springs mayor Matt Paterson demanded Ms Buttrose retract the stories referencing the claims of white supremacy and he has since refused to do interviews with the ABC's national division - not ABC's Alice Springs bureau.
Opposition leader Peter Dutton also urged Ms Buttrose to address the "rubbish" reporting on the issues in Alice Springs and said the stories were "doing a disservice to everybody in that local community".
The ABC also aired controversial comments on its political chat show The Drum on Wednesday evening by the ?associate dean of Indigenous leadership and engagement at the University of Technology Sydney, Nareen Young, who compared the Alice Springs meeting to the 1988 movie Mississippi Burning.
The film is based on the disappearance of three civil rights workers who are met with hostility by police, residents and the Ku Klux Klan.
"I think the elephant in the room ... when I watched that footage of the town meeting that was held ... is that if you saw that room in Mississippi Burning for example, Australians would say, 'How terrible, that's terrible that happens there," Professor Young said on the program.
"The vitriol and racism and lack of regard and respect for those people on their land while those people were living off the bounty of it was appalling."
The show's host, John Barron, did not challenge Prof Young on her comments.

Fox News wants external inquiry into ABC's Four Corners' two-part series Fox and the Big Lie
SOPHIE ELSWORTH - SEPTEMBER 5, 2021
Fox News has called for an independent external review of the ABC's airing of a two-part series on Four Corners, labelling the program "indefensible" and "a gross distortion of the truth" for falsely blaming Rupert Murdoch for Donald Trump's refusal to ?accept his electoral defeat.
Fox News's general counsel Bernard Gugar has written a second legal letter in as many weeks to ABC chairwoman Ita Buttrose and managing director David Anderson, outlining the many errors in the two episodes that aired on the public broadcaster's flagship investigative program.
It's understood the letter, which was also sent to the media watchdog, the Australian Communications and Media Authority, highlighted critical information given to the ABC ?before the airing of the episodes that Fox claims the ABC ignored.
An external review of the two-part series would be similar to what occurred with the ABC's ?recent independent inquiry into Exposed: The Ghost Train Fire, which was ordered by the ABC board and conducted by investigative journalist Chris Masters and University of Sydney professor Rod Tiffen.
The Four Corners series titled Fox and the Big Lie was led by ABC journalist Sarah Ferguson and attempted to smear the Murdoch-controlled broadcaster with false claims that tilted the debate against Fox News.
The 27-page letter argues the series was an attack on the US broadcaster that breached the ABC's Code of Practice, which states it must "ensure that the gathering and presentation by the corporation of news and information is accurate and impartial according to the recognised standards of objective journalism".
Gugar stated in the letter the ABC's attack on Fox News was "indefensible and cannot stand".
"The episodes flout the letter and the spirit of the Australian Broadcasting Code of Practice and run afoul of the federal parliament's primary standards for the ABC," he said.
"Those authorities make it clear that the ABC has a duty to gather and present accurate information in an impartial manner."
This latest letter comes 12 days after Gugar's first legal letter the day before the first 45-minute episode of the series aired.
It warned the ABC that Fox was considering all its options.
In the second episode, which ran for 48 minutes, Ferguson described Fox News as "the Trump network", an "echo chamber" and also a "propaganda vehicle".
The second letter, which was sent to Ms Buttrose and Mr ?Anderson on Friday, said the "the vast majority of them (the interviewees on the Four Corners program) shared the same anti-Fox News bias".
This included electronic voting company Smartmatic's lawyer Erik Connolly, who outlined his vested interest in vilifying Fox News amid an ongoing litigation in the US to sue Fox for billions of dollars.
His arguments have been widely contested and viewers were not given any opposing arguments, instead Ferguson just made a brief reference on air that Fox News had rejected the cases.
The ABC aired a small snippet of a lengthy statement provided by Fox that said: "Fox News covered the election in the highest tradition of the First Amendment".
Fox has demanded "an answer and a correction" within 14 days of the ABC receiving the second letter on Friday.
During the series it interviewed six former employees of Fox News and all but one of them had departed Fox News at least three years ago.
Despite this, in the second episode Ferguson stated: "That the Murdoch's Fox News joined the effort to spread lies and propaganda for Donald Trump was no surprise to the insiders who spoke to us."
Gugar said: "The end result is television programming that violates fundamental tenets of the ABC's charter and is not worthy of the trust that the people of Australia have placed on the ABC."

'Ritual abuse' in sex abuse royal commission report, despite claims QAnon inserted it to Scott Morrison's speech
RICHARD FERGUSON and JAMES MADDEN - JUNE 15, 2021
Ritual abuse was identified by the royal commission into institutional child sexual abuse as a regular experience of victims, despite claims Scott Morrison used the term in a speech under the influence of a conspiracy theorist.
The ABC's Four Corners reported on Monday that Tim Stewart - a family friend of the Prime Minister who believes the world is controlled by a cabal of Satanic paedophiles - sent text messages claiming he'd had the phrase "ritual abuse" inserted into Mr Morrison's 2019 apology to victims of institutional sex abuse.
The term "ritual abuse" has been identified as a key word for followers of the QAnon conspiracy, who also believe a global child sex trafficking ring is being led by Hollywood actors and former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton, in their online forums.
The ABC on Tuesday said there was a distinction between the "rituals" and "ritualised abuse" detailed by the royal commission, and the "ritual sexual abuse" mentioned by Mr Morrison in 2019.
"The terms have two distinct meanings. 'Ritual' is ceremonial while 'ritualised' refers to something that is repeated - such as military hazing ceremonies," an ABC spokeswoman said.
"The examples ... all refer to 'ritualised' - repeated - abuse, mainly in the context of military hazing ceremonies. The Prime Minister did not use the phrase 'ritual sexual abuse' in that context in the national apology speech.
"(Four Corners) is accurately reported and raises questions it is legitimate and in the public interest to ask and examine."
The second volume of the royal commission's final report includes several mentions of how victims of abuse described rituals of hazing and rape across orphanages, churches, the Australian Defence Force and other institutions.
"In some private sessions, we heard about how many of the forms of sexual abuse described above were used in ritualistic or initiation settings to instil institutional culture. For example, institutions may condone sexually humiliating rituals or initiation practices, including forced public nudity, hazing and rape," it says. The report also highlights ritual abuse of children involved in ADF youth troops and mentions that "ritualised abuse" has been a recurring theme in the media.
"The abuse took place within an informal hierarchy in which older recruits physically and sexually abused more junior recruits as part of the ritualised practices of bastardisation that were designed to break in and humiliate the new entrants to the navy.
"The media reported on high-profile alleged offenders, organised paedophile networks and ritualised abuse in Australia and overseas. As awareness grew, so did knowledge of related behaviours, such as grooming."
The texts between Mr Stewart and a former QAnon believer in which Mr Stewart purports to have inserted the phrase "ritual sexual abuse" into the speech formed the cornerstone of Monday night's Four Corners episode.
The report was hotly anticipated after its original air date was pushed back when ABC managing editor David Anderson decided it was not ready to run.
In the program, UNSW criminologist Michael Salter said mental health groups came to him after Mr Morrison's 2019 apology to sex abuse victims and raised that the term "ritual sex abuse" was used regularly by QAnon.
Independent MP Andrew Wilkie tabled a petition in parliament last November that called the royal commission an inquiry into "ritual abuse", but on Tuesday said he would not have done so if he knew the words' connection with QAnon conspiracy.
The QAnon investigation was the most-watched Four Corners episode of the year to date.

Labor accuses Scott Morrison of 'shocking lack of judgment' over QAnon claims
Scott Morrison has been accused of a 'shocking lack of judgment' after a Four Corners episode outlined his links to a far-right conspiracy theorist.
Finn McHugh - JUNE 15, 2021
Scott Morrison has been accused of a "shocking lack of judgment" after a Four Corners episode claimed a conspiracy theorist influenced his apology to victims of child sexual abuse.
The program said Tim Stewart, a friend of Mr Morrison and QAnon conspiracy theorist, regularly visited Kirribilli House during Mr Morrison's prime ministership, while his wife was employed as a household attendant at Kirribilli until last year.
The far-right cult, listed by the FBI as a domestic terror threat, claims a group of elite, left-wing Satanic pedophiles secretly run the world and attempted to undermine former US president Donald Trump.
Four Corners included texts from Mr Stewart to an associate correctly predicting Mr Morrison would include the phrase "ritual sexual abuse", used by QAnon believers to propagate its conspiracy, in his October 2018 apology to victims of child sexual abuse.
But the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse final report also made references to sexual abuse as part of "ritualised practices".
Labor frontbencher Chris Bowen said he was "appalled" by the revelations and declared Mr Morrison had "very serious questions" to answer.
"I thought and believe that Four Corners has provided a compelling case that the Prime Minister has engaged in a shocking lack of judgment in relation to QAnon," he said on Tuesday.
"The Prime Minister is entitled to personal relationships, and he's not accountable for the political views of his friends. He is accountable for allowing his friends to have input to important government statements as Prime Minister of Australia."
Mr Bowen said Four Corners had established Mr Stewart impacted the speech, describing the presence of the phrase as an "amazing coincidence".
"They provided text messages, they provided enough evidence to show that the Prime Minister has very serious questions to answer. No politician of any side should have any truck in any dealings with QAnon," he said.
"If the Prime Minister of this country has allowed a discredited conspiracy group ... to have input to government statements, then that is a matter of the most serious grievance."
Labor senator Penny Wong has repeatedly grilled government officials over Mr Morrison's links to Mr Stewart and, by extension, the QAnon conspiracy.
Mr Bowen said the government "has failed on every single occasion to provide proper answers" and continued to do so.
A spokesman for the Prime Minister's office told NCA NewsWire the government "will not be responding to the baseless conspiracy theories being peddled by Four Corners".
In a statement before the program aired on Monday, a spokesman for Mr Morrison dismissed the allegations as a "politically motivated slur" against the Prime Minister and his family.
"Four Corners ... is already facing serious questions about the accuracy, bias and credibility of its journalism, that is now giving credence to irrational Twitter conspiracy theorists and raising the profile of what the Prime Minister clearly deems a discredited and dangerous fringe group," they said.
In his only public comments on the matter, Mr Morrison flatly rejected "deeply offensive" attempts to link him to QAnon.
"I find it deeply offensive that there would be any suggestion that I would have any involvement or support for such a dangerous organisation. I clearly do not," he said in June.
"It is also disappointing that Four Corners in their inquiries would seek to cast this aspersion, not just against me but members of my own family. I just think that is really poor form."
The program was initially slated to run a week earlier but was upwardly referred to ABC managing director David Anderson, who suggested "concern over some areas" and elements "to be strengthened within the story".
Mr Anderson said the program was not referred to him "with concern" and backed the "outstanding" Four Corners team, led by Walkley winners Sally Neighbour and Louise Milligan.

ABC accuses Scott Morrison of validating a 'QAnon' conspiracy theory at the behest of his good mate during his apology to the victims of child sexual abuse'
LEVI PARSONS and MICHAEL PICKERING - 14 June 2021
1/2
The ABC has accused Scott Morrison of supporting bizarre 'QAnon' conspiracy theories about satanic paedophiles during a 2018 speech about child abuse.
Offering recognition to victims of child sex abuse, the Prime Minister's speech was well received by survivors and the wide nation when he made the apology in Parliament.
But according to a controversial Four Corners episode that almost didn't make it to air, he also uttered a phrase some conspiracy theorists claim was a dog whistle to the far-right fringe group QAnon.
During the speech, the prime minister described the long history of sexual crimes committed at institutions such as churches and children's homes across Australia as 'ritual sexual abuse'.
The Four Corners episode, which aired on Monday, claimed a friend of Mr Morrison, Tim Stewart, who is deeply embedded in the bizarre QAnon movement, lobbied the nation's leader to get those words in the speech.
The baseless internet cult gained worldwide prominence during the Trump presidency and assert that 'leftist' politicians, celebrities and elites are satanic paedophiles who operate through a 'deep state'.
The group also bizarrely claims, without evidence, that New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and former First Lady of the US Michelle Obama are men in disguise.
Elise Thomas, an open source intelligence analyst for the Institute of Strategic Dialogue, said the term 'ritual' for QAnon followers denotes the satanic elements of their beliefs, rather than the ordinary meaning of something occurring regularly.
'The use of the phrase "ritual sex abuse" will have been taken as validation of the conspiracy theory by QAnon followers because it's a person in authority using this phrase which appears to directly reference the conspiracy theory,' she told the program.
The Prime Minister's office has vehemently denied he used the words as a subtle nod to the QAnon group.
'The term "ritual" is one that the Prime Minister heard directly from the abuse survivors and the National Apology victims and Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse Reference Group he met with in the lead up to the apology,' an earlier statement said.
'It refers not just to the ritualised way or patterns in which so many crimes were committed but also to the frequency and repetition of them.'
The man at the centre of the alleged push to get the term included in the apology, Mr Stewart, who had been friends with the prime minister since the 1990s, was recently banned from Twitter for engaging in 'coordinated harmful activity'.
He also ran a blog on which he claimed 'elites' in Western nations were running a paedophile ring 'designed to harvest children's blood'.
His family have now become so concerned about his spiraling obsession with QAnon that they phoned the the national security hotline several times.
Mr Stewart's wife, Lynelle, has been friends with the Prime Minister's wife, Jenny, since they were teenagers, and was given security clearance in mid-2019 to work as an attendant at the Prime Minister's Sydney residence, Kirribilli House.
It is not suggested, however, that Mr Stewart's wife posed any security risk. She also did not raise the alarm about his views as his mother and sister did.
The airing of the program was previously delayed by senior ABC news figures, with managing director David Anderson telling a Senate estimates hearing last week that he had 'queries and concerns' about the program.
Mr Morrison was also asked about the program in a press conference.
'I find it deeply offensive that there would be any suggestion that I would have any involvement or support for such a dangerous organisation,' Mr Morrison said.
'It is also disappointing that Four Corners would seek to cast this aspersion not just against me but members of my own family. I just think that is really poor form.'

But Mr Stewart told Four Corners any suggestion he supported violence for example the US Capitol riots were "nonsense".
"I am too busy to read questions relating to the nonsense that's been put out there, which are just hit pieces," he said.
He has previously told The Guardian newspaper that it was completely wrong to suggest he was influencing the Prime Minister.
"I have never spoken to Scott about anything of a political nature. I'm not an adviser. The idea of me talking to him about this ... it's just not true," he said.
Mr Stewart's estranged sister Karen Stewart, who is a former candidate for the Greens, has been open about her concerns regarding her brothers' views on social media for years.
"Tim believes that the world has really been taken over by satanic paedophiles, or Luciferian paedophiles," she told Four Corners.
She told Four Corners that she ultimately felt it was her "civic duty to make that phone call" to the national security hotline.
"We decided we can make excuses for lots of things but if we're under threat and our safety is a concern, we have to legitimately inform somebody," Karen says.
"So, we did make a report to the authorities to ensure that we were doing the right thing as community members."
The ABC's managing director, David Anderson has previously rejected reports that he "pulled" the program, prepared by multi-Walkley Award-winning journalist Louise Milligan.
It follows Ms Milligan's high profile defamation battle with former Attorney-General Christian Porter that he has now discontinued and will not pursue further.
"Any suggestion that I 'pulled' or 'blocked' the program is simply not true," Mr Anderson told staff.
The ABC news director, Gaven Morris is understood to have "upwardly referred" the episode to the managing director ahead of his appearance at Senate estimates.
It also emerged that the ABC's political editor, Andrew Probyn, was asked to put a series of questions to Morrison at a press conference by Four Corners but declined to do so.
His refusal to assist his Four Corners colleagues and details of the conversations between the ABC's Canberra bureau and Four Corners was then leaked to newspapers.
Probyn declined to comment on the claims.
As a result of the ABC Canberra bureau's refusal to co-operate with Four Corners, another ABC reporter travelled to Canberra at taxpayers' expense to ask the questions but was unable to ask the question because the Prime Minister did not hold a press conference.
News.com.au has contacted both Mr Stewart and his wife Lynelle for comment.

Scott Morrison hits out at Four Corners ahead of QAnon report
Scott Morrison has accused the ABC's Four Corners program of a "politically motivated slur" over a highly-anticipated QAnon report tonight.
Samantha Maiden - JUNE 14, 2021
1/2
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has accused the ABC's Four Corners program of a "politically motivated slur" over a report tonight that reveals the sister of a family friend of the Morrisons was so concerned about her brother's links to a bizarre conspiracy theory QAnon that she notified the national security hotline several times.
The Prime Minister has slammed suggestions he has any links to the "dangerous" QAnon conspiracy cult that believes a cabal of Satan-worshipping paedophiles tried to undermine Donald Trump.
Mr Morrison and his wife, Jenny, have been family friends with the man's wife for decades and previously employed her at Kirribilli in a taxpayer-funded job.
But the ABC's Four Corners program will delve into the relationship between the Prime Minister, Mrs Morrison and the man, named as Tim Stewart, tonight in a highly anticipated episode after the program was delayed by the ABC managing director David Anderson earlier this month.
Last year, Mr Stewart's QAnon inspired Twitter account, BurnedSpy34, was permanently suspended for "engaging in co-ordinated harmful activity".
Ahead of the program, the Prime Minister has released the statement he provided to Four Corners on the episode.
"This is a politically motivated slur against the Prime Minister and his family by a Four Corners program that is already facing serious questions about the accuracy, bias and credibility of its journalism, that is now giving credence to irrational Twitter conspiracy theorists and raising the profile of what the Prime Minister clearly deems a discredited and dangerous fringe group," a spokesman said.
At a press conference in Canberra last week, the Prime Minister criticised the ABC for pursuing the story and said he wanted to make it clear he had no links with the cult whatsoever.
"I find it deeply offensive that there would be any suggestion that I would have any involvement or support for such a dangerous organisation," Mr Morrison said.
"I clearly do not."
The ABC reports tonight that Mr Stewart has a blog, Sideways Step, that examines theories that paedophiles are drinking children's blood.
"The true nature of these crimes shows that humans are being treated as a commodity and human energy is being harvested without permission," Mr Stewart writes.
"Why do evil people wish to rob a young child of their virginity? ... Why do they drink blood? Why do they need to sacrifice humans?"

The QAnon conspiracy
An American conspiracy theory about a Satanic child sexual abuse ring has gained a foothold in Australia. Tim Stewart is one of the believers, and also a long-time friend of Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
Richard Cooke - June 12 2021
1/3
Absent the fog of culture war, it is hard to understand how a single episode of Four Corners could furnish a week-long national news cycle, before it was even broadcast. It's more perplexing still that the story behind the story had no real bombshells: the program was only delayed, rather than cancelled, and David Anderson, the managing director of the ABC, assured staff that it "may very well go to air". The "allegations" in the yet-to-be-aired episode centre on a relationship that is noteworthy, rather than improper, and security concerns that are speculative, not imminent.
But one of the parties in the story is Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and the other is Tim Stewart, one of Australia's most prominent adherents of the QAnon conspiracy theory. And the story came at a time of historic tensions between the government and the public broadcaster - in the same week the ABC and a minister of the crown settled a defamation suit - and galloping conspiracism in the polities of the developed world.
Media, in particular the news sites Crikey and Guardian Australia, have already reported on the Morrison-Stewart relationship in some detail. The two men have been family friends for 30 years. They met through their wives, Jenny Morrison and Lynelle Stewart, who have been friends since they attended high school together. Both women were bridesmaids at each other's wedding. Since Scott Morrison won high office, the old friends have introduced a professional component to their relationship, with Lynelle Stewart employed at Kirribilli House, which means she requires a security clearance.
Perhaps, while reminiscing, they marvel at their husbands' respective fates: one becoming the prime minister of Australia, the other a leading proponent of a conspiracy theory that purports the world is controlled by Satanic paedophiles who have their base of operations in Hollywood and the Democratic Party, and that Donald Trump is leading a global effort to defeat these demons, leading the forces of light in a Manichean struggle for the soul of humanity.
QAnon began as an American conspiracy, and its roots run deepest there. According to recent research conducted by the non-partisan Public Religion Research Institute, as many as 15 per cent of Americans subscribe to some version of the QAnon world view. The report described a "nontrivial" cohort who affirm the statement that "the government, media and financial worlds in the US are controlled by a group of Satan-worshipping pedophiles who run a global child sex trafficking operation". Among Republican voters, this number rises to nearly 25 per cent.
The methodology of this and similar polls has been contested, because QAnon offers an unparalleled opportunity to troll pollsters. In late 2020, Pew Research numbers suggested about half of Americans had never heard of the movement. But this does not account for large numbers who hold beliefs that originated with QAnon without recognising their origin. In Britain, for example, the research body Hope Not Hate found that 25 per cent of respondents agreed that "secret satanic cults exist and include influential elites". Among 18- to 24-year-olds the proportion was 35 per cent.

ABC QAnon
ABC Managing Director David Anderson explains why he's reviewing a Four Corner's story about QAnon and the Prime Minister.
Broadcast: Mon 7 Jun 2021, 8:50pm
Transcript
And potentially adding to Coalition pressure on the ABC is another story that Four Corners has lined up, which was due to run tonight until management intervened:
JODIE SPEERS: ABC management has reportedly knocked back an upcoming Four Corners episode by journalist Louise Milligan about the relationship between the Prime Minister Scott Morrison and a supporter of the QAnon conspiracy theory.
- Seven Early News, 4 June, 2021
The Sydney Morning Herald broke that news on Thursday and revealed it was MD David Anderson who pulled the plug, suggesting that perhaps he is in control after all.
Social media immediately lit up with cries of censorship. And on Friday morning Sunrise crossed live to ABC HQ every hour for the latest:
AMBER LAIDLER: The ABC says the story has not been pulled from air and any information to the contrary is misleading ...
- Sunrise, Seven Network, 4 June, 2021
That is indeed what the ABC said, first in a public tweet and then in a longer email to ABC staff from David Anderson on Friday, in which Anderson said he had merely delayed the program until his concerns have been answered:
Any suggestion that I "pulled" or "blocked" the program is simply not true. I reviewed the material and made an editorial decision it was not yet ready for broadcast, as any responsible Editor-in-Chief would.
- Email, David Anderson, Managing Director, to ABC staff, 4 June, 2021
So, what do we know?
Well, at the start of the year, Four Corners and reporter Louise Milligan began exploring the relationship between Scott Morrison and a leading Australian supporter of QAnon, the far-right conspiracy cult that believes a cabal of Satanic paedophiles operates at the highest levels of government.
In doing so, the ABC was following up a story that first broke in The Guardian in 2019 which revealed that one of the PM's friends was a QAnon conspiracy theorist whose wife worked on the PM's staff.
Later, Crikey named the man as Tim Stewart and characterised him as a "long-time friend" of Scott Morrison whose wife was "best friends" with the PM's wife Jenny.
And the smoking gun? Crikey noted the PM used the phrase "ritual sexual abuse" in a speech on child abuse, which was cheered by Tim Stewart on Twitter as a reference to the QAnon cause.
Now, as proof of influence over the PM, you may think that is not super strong. And while Milligan is no doubt aiming to firm up any evidence, some in ABC editorial management still regard it as thin.
David Anderson says he watched a rough cut of the program on Thursday after upward referral from news boss Gaven Morris and told Four Corners he had concerns:
David Anderson: As Editor-in-Chief I independently just reviewed that story and wrote a note back suggesting that I felt there was concern about a couple of areas and was looking for other things to be strengthened within the story but otherwise to proceed on …
Senator, if I may, I'll also see reported today that there is, you know, there seems to be some consternation that there is clash between myself and the Four Corners team. That is incorrect.
- Senate Environment & Communications Legislation Committee, 7 June, 2021
The program is now back on the shelf while work continues.
But in the meanwhile, the genie is out of the bottle.
On Friday, after failing for four weeks to respond to repeated Four Corners inquiries, and after his media chief had rung the ABC's head of news to inquire about the QAnon program, Scott Morrison got this loaded question at a press conference:
JOURNALIST: Are you concerned the ABC's involved in so-called vigilante journalism? Were the allegations put to you and what is your connection to the man at the centre of that story?
- ABC News Channel, 4 June, 2021
And the response? Offense that anyone would connect him to QAnon. And this barb aimed at the ABC:
SCOTT MORRISON: It's also just very disappointing that Four Corners in their inquiries would seek to cast this aspersion not just against me but by members of my own family. I just think that's really poor form. Thank you very much.
- ABC News Channel, 4 June, 2021
Clearly, another war with the government - and the PM in particular - is the last thing the ABC needs.
But ABC management is saying the program will go to air. What it ends up saying, however, is another matter.
Stand by for fierce debate inside the ABC and a chorus of criticism - perhaps from both sides - when it does see the light of day.

A Cancelled 'Four Corners' Episode Linking Scott Morrison To QAnon Will Now Be Aired
The ABC has said it will air an episode of Four Corners that investigates whether Scott Morrison has ties to far-right conspiracy group QAnon, despite initially delaying it amid controversy.
CLAIRE KEENAN - 7 JUNE 2021
It's not often an episode of Four Corners causes a stir before it's even aired.
Last Thursday, it was reported that the ABC's managing director David Anderson had cancelled a scheduled episode of the show, which supposedly explores the relationship between QAnon and Australian politics.
The episode was scheduled to broadcast tonight, but ABC staff who worked on it, including investigative journalist Louise Milligan, were reportedly told late last week that the program was going to be pulled.
The decision was made just days after Industry Minister Christian Porter discontinued his defamation case against the ABC, and Milligan herself, which has led people to call out the timing of the ABC's decision to pull the Four Corners episode as a bit suss.
Four Corners has since confirmed that it has been given the green light to continue working on the episode, which is now expected to air within the next fortnight.
But why has the episode caused such a commotion?
What Is Four Corners Investigating Exactly?
The episode under scrutiny supposedly links Prime Minister Scott Morrison to a supporter of the far-right conspiracy group, QAnon.
QAnon is one of the biggest conspiracy movements in recent history, which has gained thousands of Australian followers in the last year, particularly since the emergence of the COVID pandemic.
It has been reported in the past that a QAnon figure is supposedly a family friend of ScoMo, and that the figure's wife is actually on the PM's staff.
Just last year, The Guardian reported that one of the more significant QAnon figures, who tweets under the handle @BurnedSpy34, is a long-life friend of ScoMo's.
Why Was The Episode Blocked In The First Place?
Apparently, the episode was "upwardly referred" for review by the ABC's news director, Gaven Morris, to Managing Director David Anderson.
Usually this happens in the instance of sensitive content, or if there are any concerns, which is a pretty standard practice for the broadcaster.
But Anderson has strongly denied that the decision to stop the episode was purely to dampen tensions with the federal government.
In an email to ABC staff last week, Anderson wrote that the reason he delayed the episode was because it needed more work, and he encouraged Milligan's team to "keep going".
Scott Morrison's Response To The Episode
Four Corners maintains that it reached out to Morrison on multiple occasions to ask him about the nature of his relationship with the QAnon figure, but had failed to get a response by the time production on the episode had finished.
ScoMo had stayed silent on the issue, until the news broke that the episode had been blocked. Then, he had some pretty strong feelings about it.
Speaking at a press meeting last week, the PM said that he found the Four Corners program "deeply offensive" and in "poor form", and he publicly criticised the ABC for suggesting that he had any "involvement or support for such a dangerous organisation".
"I clearly do not," he continued.
Four Corners vs ABC Management
While the controversial episode is now set to be aired, this has all played out amidst rumours of rising tensions between the Four Corners team and ABC's management, which the staff are totally denying.
A new airing date for the episode is yet to be announced.

Four Corners pushes to air QAnon episode within weeks
Lisa Visentin and Zoe Samios - June 6, 2021
Four Corners will push for its episode linking Scott Morrison to a QAnon conspiracy theorist to air within the next fortnight, despite the Prime Minister's office rebuffing the broadcaster's attempts for a detailed response to its questions.
The controversy over the episode will be a key focus of a Senate estimates hearing on Monday, when ABC managing director David Anderson will face questions over his decision to delay the program days out from scheduled airing, deeming it "not ready".
ABC sources familiar with the internal dynamics of the controversy who were not authorised to speak publicly said Four Corners was working to address Mr Anderson's concerns with the aim of having it broadcast-ready in the next two weeks. One of the concerns was that the Prime Minister had not responded to detailed questions from the broadcaster.
Mr Morrison's office responded to the ABC on Sunday with a brief statement after weeks of ignoring their requests for comment, with a government source saying the response did not want to give credence to "crazy Twitter conspiracy theories". The statement comes after Mr Morrison publicly criticised Four Corners last week for "poor form" by attempting to explore his connections to QAnon supporter, Tim Stewart, who has been known to the Morrison family for years.
Lead investigative reporter on the episode, Louise Milligan, said on Twitter on Saturday the ABC had contacted Mr Morrison's office "more than 20 times" over the past month seeking answers to questions relating to the story.
Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson said she intended to use the estimates hearing to ask Mr Anderson about the planned episode and to raise concerns about the ABC's social media policy.
"I intend to ask Mr Anderson about ABC editorial standards including in relation to reports that a proposed Four Corners story, which made deeply offensive claims and unjustifiably attacked the Prime Minister and his family, had not met the requisite editorial standards," Senator Henderson said.
Mr Anderson, who is also editor-in-chief, informed ABC staff via email last week that the reason he delayed the episode from airing this Monday was because it required more work in order to satisfy a number of claims made, and he had encouraged Milligan's team to "keep going".
The decision to recall Mr Anderson for further evidence, just days after his last appearance at Senate estimates, was initiated by Labor and the Greens before the controversy over the Four Corners episode erupted. Instead, the parties sought Mr Anderson's return to extract details over the settlement deal struck between the ABC and Industry Minister Christian Porter after he discontinued his defamation action against the broadcaster last week.
Shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus said Mr Porter's defamation action had cost ABC resources, and the public had a right to know what had happened.
"It is important to understand exactly what this bluff has cost taxpayers and correct the record on some of the outlandish statements made by Porter, which go to the ABC's integrity," Mr Dreyfus said.
Mr Porter sought to claim victory over the ABC after he dropped his lawsuit, which he launched in March over Milligan's reporting of a historical rape allegation against him in an online article in February. He continues to strenuously deny the allegation. But the parties continued to dispute the details of the settlement in the hours after it was announced.
The ABC has maintained it did not pay Mr Porter any damages, only his mediation costs, and has appended an editorial note to the article, which remains online. Mr Anderson is expected to disclose the cost of the settlement to the ABC when asked on Monday.

ABC denies Four Corners, management 'at war'
Four Corners staff have denied they are "at war" with ABC bosses in the wake of an episode about QAnon being pulled.
Samantha Maiden - JUNE 7, 2021
1/2
Four Corners executive producer Sally Neighbour and journalist Louise Milligan have denied they are "at war" with ABC bosses in the wake of the high profile defamation battle with Christian Porter and a story about the QAnon cult that has angered the Prime Minister.
Fresh controversy has erupted in recent days over the Four Corners program after it emerged ABC management had delayed the broadcast of a program by Milligan over the QAnon cult that canvasses long standing claims that a family friend of Scott Morrison and his wife Jenny have links with the organisation.
The ABC has also confirmed in Senate estimates today the Porter case ended up costing the public broadcaster $780,000.
The former Attorney-General launched the legal action over a Four Corners online article that revealed a senior cabinet minister, later revealed to be Mr Porter, had been accused of an historical rape.
Mr Porter, who denied the accusation, discontinued the case in May.
The broadcaster spent $680,000 defending the action, as well as paying $100,000 to the company of Mr Porter's high-profile defamation lawyer Rebekah Giles in mediation costs.
"We don't regret publishing the article in the first place. We stand by our journalism. That article still exists online," ABC managing director David Anderson said at Senate Estimates today.
Last week, Mr Anderson flatly denied he "pulled" the latest Four Corners program prepared by Milligan for political reasons but confirmed he did delay the broadcast to "do more work" on it.
That prompted a report in The Australian newspaper on Monday that the ABC is "at war" over the fallout and that Four Corners was in conflict with Mr Anderson and the broadcaster's news boss Gaven Morris.
While refusing to comment in the original article, Neighbour tweeted this morning that the suggestion she was at war with anyone was incorrect.
"Happy Monday from #4Corners. Fyi no-one here is at war with anyone and morale is excellent," she said.
"We fully accept it is the MD's role to decide whether/when to publish, and we value ABC management's unwavering support for our journalism. We are continuing to work on the QAnon story."
The journalist working on the QAnon story is the multi-Walkley Award winning Milligan, who is the author of a book on George Pell, Cardinal.
"Any suggestion I'm 'at war', least of all with ABC MD, with whom I have an excellent relationship, is completely untrue," Milligan said.
"I declined to speak to any journalist about this - in fact, I've been very unwell after (an) operation."

Cautious or craven? The saga of Four Corners program on Morrison and QAnon has laid bare fractures within the ABC
It's hard to judge the reasoning behind the ABC's decision, but what's clear is both journalists and senior management are feeling deeply betrayed
Margaret Simons - 6 Jun 2021
1/2
A regular trope of dramas about newsrooms is the conflict between the editor or proprietor and the courageous investigative journalist. Cue rows, storm outs, lachrymose reflections in seedy bars, followed by the catharsis of eventual victory and publication.
In this story arc, the editor almost never gets to be the hero - or only if they have a change of heart and join their courageous reporters on the barricades.
It probably doesn't need saying that real life is rarely so simple.
On Thursday, a story broke about the ABC managing director David Anderson preventing a Four Corners program about QAnon's influence on Australian politics from going to air.
The reason the story broke was because of leaks from inside the ABC. The program was originally scheduled for Monday night. Originally intended for broadcast in May, it had already been delayed once, and had been signed off by the legal department and at least some levels of editorial management.
Then Anderson stopped it going to air.
After being accused of pulling the show, Anderson issued a statement to all staff saying that he had only delayed it, judging it not ready, and asked for more work to be done.
So how are we to understand this sequence of events?
Given the pressure the ABC is under, and given that the ABC's own people are leaking, it is understandable to be concerned that Anderson has crumbled to political pressure.
Insiders say that it is the first time in decades that a program already scheduled has been pulled. They contest any suggestion that this is the normal operation of editorial processes.
On the other hand, internal communications dating from early this week speak not of the program being pulled, but rather of delay, to allow for further work.
My understanding is that the program as it stands is interesting, rather than revelatory - containing some material not already public, but also not likely to bring a government down or impede a career.
This is in the context of prime minister Scott Morrison's family friendship with QAnon proponent Tim Stewart already being on the public record, having been reported by the Guardian and Crikey.
As a result of this week's events, the Four Corners QAnon program now carries an outsized weight of public expectation and, should it air in the future, will come under more than the usual scrutiny.
So how are we to understand these events?
The term "upward referral" may sound like something your physiotherapist would say when treating sciatica but is in fact a central part of normal process in the ABC - the most managerial of our media organisations.
To quote ABC editorial policies:
"Editorial decision-making at the ABC is based on upward referral. Those who create, acquire, commission, or oversee ABC content are responsible for ensuring that it complies with the Editorial Policies, but they are also required to upwardly refer any editorial matter where they are in doubt. Editorial content that is controversial or likely to have an extraordinary impact should also be upwardly referred."
What does that mean in practice?
In any newsroom, it is absolutely the job of an investigative reporter to push and push and push - first to get the story, then to get as much of it in front of the public as possible, against the barriers of defamation laws, vested interests and pressure from the powerful.
But it is equally the job of an editor or producer to question, to test, to examine, to exercise judgement and then - having determined what is to be made public - to back their reporters to the hilt.
It is the ABC's editorial processes, frustrating though they can be, that help make it Australia's most trusted news source by a country mile. And it is this public trust that is the ABC's best guarantee of being able to survive the attacks of flawed and hostile governments.
Caution is not necessarily craven.
We saw the results in the case of the Four Corners Inside the Canberra Bubble story last year, in which reporter Louise Milligan revealed an extra-marital affair by minister Alan Tudge and alleged a long history of misogynistic behaviour by then attorney general Christian Porter.

Australia's Prime Minister Has an Alarming QAnon Connection
David Gilbert - 4.6.21
1/2
Australia's Prime Minister is facing renewed questions about his links to the country's highest profile QAnon supporter, after an episode of an investigative TV show looking into the controversy was suddenly pulled this week.
The episode of Four Corners, an investigative reporting series on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), was scheduled to air next Monday, looking at the alleged influence wielded by Tim Stewart, Australia's foremost QAnon booster, and his friend of 30 years Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
But on Thursday the Sydney Morning Herald reported that the show had been pulled after editor-in-chief David Anderson expressed concerns about the show.
The decision comes just days after former Attorney General and current Industry Minister Christian Porter decided to drop his defamation action against the ABC over the reporting by Four Corners of a historical rape allegation against him.
But in an email to staff on Friday, seen by VICE News, Anderson defended the decision not to air the show, saying "any suggestion that I 'pulled' or 'blocked' the program is simply not true."
Anderson said he had been shown a rough cut of the episode on Wednesday and wanted to "satisfy myself further on a number of claims made in the story." He asked the reporters to provide a written response next week, saying the airing of the episode was not time-sensitive.
Whether the story was pulled or simply delayed, the result is that allegations that have been simmering for the last 18 months are headline news again, and could now threaten Morrison's credibility.
Morrison, speaking to reporters in the capital Canberra on Friday, said it was "really poor form" for Four Corners to look into those allegations.
"I find it deeply offensive there would be any suggestion I would have any involvement or support for such a dangerous organisation. I clearly do not," Morrison said. "It is just also disappointing that Four Corners in their inquiries would seek to cast this aspersion, not just against me but by members of my own family."
While QAnon is predominantly a U.S. phenomenon, one of the most startling aspects of a conspiracy theory so deeply rooted in U.S. politics is how quickly it has gone global. And Australia is one of the countries where it has the strongest hold.
And Stewart, who previously ran an online health food venture called Fruit Loop, was one of its most vocal supporters from the very beginning, amassing a Twitter following of over 20,000 people.
Morrison and Stewart have been friends for 30 years because their wives, Jenny Morrison and Lynelle Stewart, are best friends. The pair were bridesmaids at each other's weddings and today Lynelle Stewart works for her friend in the Prime Minister's residence in Sydney, where she holds a government security clearance.
The claims about Morrison's links to QAnon date back to a speech given by Morrison in the Australian Parliament on October 22, 2018, when he issued a formal apology to the survivors of institutional child abuse.
"The crimes of ritual sexual abuse happened in schools, churches, youth groups, scout troops, orphanages, foster homes, sporting clubs, group homes, charities, and in family homes as well," Morrison said.
The use of the term "ritual" was what caught the attention of some watching, as it was not a term used by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sex Abuse. At the time the use of the term went unnoticed by the mainstream media, but a blogger called Richard Bartholomew did highlight its use as odd at the time.

Scott Morrison labels ABC Four Corners program on QAnon 'disappointing' and 'poor form'
Comments about program that is yet to air come after ABC boss tells staff 'any suggestion that I "pulled" or "blocked" the program is simply not true'
Amanda Meade - 4 Jun 2021
1/2
The prime minister Scott Morrison says it is "deeply offensive" and "poor form" of the ABC's Four Corners program to investigate his relationship with a supporter of the QAnon conspiracy.
The program which has upset Morrison was slated for Monday but was delayed for review by the managing director, David Anderson.
"I find it deeply offensive that there would be any suggestion that I would have any involvement or support for such a dangerous organisation," Morrison told reporters. "I clearly do not. It is also disappointing that Four Corners would seek to cast this aspersion not just against me but by members of my own family. I just think that is really poor form."
Morrison's comments came hours after Anderson revealed he had asked Four Corners to answer some "queries and concerns" he has about the program.
"Any suggestion that I 'pulled' or 'blocked' the program is simply not true," Anderson told staff on Friday after reports the story had been delayed for broadcast.
The ABC news director, Gaven Morris, had "upwardly referred" the episode to Anderson, who is preparing for an additional appearance at Senate estimates on Monday. He was recalled to be questioned about Christian Porter's defamation suit against the ABC which the former attorney general dropped on Monday.
The program was sparked by a story in Guardian Australia in 2019 that revealed that a significant Australian proponent of the QAnon conspiracy, Tim Stewart, was a family friend of Morrison and that his wife was on the prime minister's staff.
The QAnon conspiracy purports that powerful forces are hiding and protecting satanic paedophile rings and that a secretive individual named Q leaves clues for his followers to decipher on internet forums.
Last year Stewart's QAnon Twitter account, BurnedSpy34, was permanently suspended for "engaging in coordinated harmful activity".
Stewart said in 2019 he had not attempted to influence Morrison, nor had he had conversations with him about any QAnon content.
Anderson told staff he had asked the program for more information because he wants to satisfy himself about a number of claims made in the story, which is reported by the multi-Walkley award-winning journalist Louise Milligan.
"I reviewed the material and made an editorial decision it was not yet ready for broadcast, as any responsible editor-in-chief would," he said.
"My exact words were: 'Please take on board the feedback and keep going. There is nothing in the program that I can see is time sensitive. I would like a written response next week addressing the feedback. I know the team have worked on it for a while now, but frankly I would prefer we took our time to make it as strong as possible.'"

'Deeply offensive': Prime Minister slams Four Corners' QAnon probe
Zoe Samios and Lisa Visentin - June 4, 2021
Prime Minister Scott Morrison says it is "deeply offensive" to suggest he has any association with the QAnon conspiracy movement, after ABC managing director David Anderson knocked back a Four Corners episode about Mr Morrison's alleged links to a QAnon supporter.
Responding to reports Mr Anderson withheld the episode due to editorial concerns, Mr Morrison criticised Four Corners' attempt to explore his connections to the supporter.
"I find it deeply offensive that there would be any suggestion that I would have any involvement or support for such a dangerous organisation. I clearly do not," Mr Morrison said on Friday.
"It is also disappointing that Four Corners, with their inquiries, would seek to cast this aspersion not just against me, but by members of my own family. I just think that is really poor form."
The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age reported on Thursday that Mr Anderson knocked back the episode by prominent journalist Louise Milligan. The decision comes amid escalating tensions between the public broadcaster and the government, and just days after Industry Minister Christian Porter dropped defamation action against the ABC and Ms Milligan.
Mr Anderson on Friday defended his decision in an email to ABC employees, saying the program was not ready for broadcast but that he had urged the reporting team to "keep going", leaving open the possibility the episode could air at a later date.
"On Wednesday I was provided with a link to a 'rough cut' of a Four Corners story about the influence of QAnon conspiracy theories in Australian domestic politics which had been endorsed by News management," Mr Anderson said in a note to staff, seen by The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
"Any suggestion that I "pulled" or "blocked" the program is simply not true. I reviewed the material and made an editorial decision it was not yet ready for broadcast, as any responsible Editor-in-Chief would."
Mr Anderson has assured the feedback was encouraging and that he requested more details to strengthen the story.
"My exact words were: 'Please take on board the feedback and keep going. There is nothing in the program that I can see is time-sensitive. I would like a written response next week addressing the feedback. I know the team have worked on it for a while now, but frankly I would prefer we took our time to make it as strong as possible,'" he said.
"I am absolutely confident of that decision and make no apologies for requiring the highest standards of our published journalism." A date for the episode is not set but could still air at some point in the future provided it meets Mr Anderson's standards.
Four Corners staff were expecting the episode to run this Monday following weeks of delays, but were informed on Thursday it would not go to air following Mr Anderson's decision. The episode was referred to Mr Anderson by the ABC's director of news Gaven Morris - a typical practice that occurs with highly sensitive content.
The episode was approved by multiple ABC employees including the corporation's legal department, editorial policy manager Mark Maley, and its head of investigations, John Lyons. Questions about the episode were put to the Prime Minister's office on and off over a four-week period.
The QAnon conspiracy theory centres on discredited claims about an international paedophile ring involving politicians and celebrities. The Guardian reported in 2019 that a family friend of the Prime Minister is a key follower of the movement. The Age and the Herald have not seen any evidence of a relationship between Mr Morrison and a QAnon supporter and does not suggest that one exists.
The decision to knock back the episode occurred days after Mr Porter dropped his defamation action against the ABC on Monday over the reporting of a historical rape allegation. But the settlement deal was followed by an exchange of barbs between the parties as they disputed the details. Mr Porter strenuously denies the allegations.
Mr Anderson will appear before a parliamentary committee on Monday to discuss the settlement of the defamation case.

ABC managing director David Anderson blocks Four Corners episode
JAMES MADDEN - JUNE 3, 2021
A Four Corners episode about an alleged association between Scott Morrison and a supporter of the QAnon conspiracy theory has been delayed by ABC managing director David Anderson on the grounds it failed to meet "editorial and legal requirements".
The Four Corners story by reporter Louise Milligan was slated to air next Monday. But Mr Anderson refused to approve the program after it was "upwardly referred" to him by news director Gaven Morris, according to a report in Nine newspapers on Thursday.
The timing of Mr Anderson's decision is noteworthy - he is due to appear before Senate Estimates next Monday to face further questions about the defamation case brought by Industry Minister Christian Porter against the ABC.
The defamation case, which dealt with the ABC's publication of historical rape allegations against Mr Porter, is expected to be discontinued after the parties agreed to terms on Monday.
But as The Australian has reported, tensions between Mr Porter and the ABC were further inflamed when Milligan and Four Corners executive producer Sally Neighbour posted comments about the legal matter on Twitter before the judge presiding over the case had considered consent orders.
The Australian reported that Mr Anderson subsequently approached Mr Porter on Monday afternoon to express his regret over the ill-timed social media activity of the two senior journalists.
When Mr Anderson fronts the parliamentary committee next week, it is expected that he will be quizzed on the amount of taxpayer money paid by the ABC to Mr Porter as part of the settlement of the case.
On Thursday, a spokeswoman for the ABC denied the claim in the Nine newspapers that the Four Corners story had been "pulled" from broadcast.
"Any suggestion to the contrary is misleading and mischievous," the spokeswoman said.
"All ABC content is subject to the same rigorous editorial decision-making processes before being published.
"The decision to publish is only made once all requirements, including editorial and legal requirements, have been met and it is appropriate to do so."

ABC bosses pull Four Corners episode linking PM to QAnon figure
Zoe Samios - June 3, 2021
ABC management has pulled an upcoming Four Corners episode about the relationship between Prime Minister Scott Morrison and a supporter of the QAnon conspiracy theory, a decision that could be seen as an attempt to dampen tensions between the national broadcaster and federal government.
The episode was expected to run this Monday following weeks of delays, but staff have since been informed it will not go to air following a decision by managing director David Anderson. The decision comes just days after Industry Minister Christian Porter decided to drop his defamation action against action the ABC over its reporting of a historical rape allegation.
Multiple ABC sources told The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age the episode was pulled after news director Gaven Morris failed to give it the seal of approval and referred it to Mr Anderson. However, the sources said the story did receive approval from legal and head of investigations, John Lyons. An ABC spokesperson said it does not comment on upcoming Four Corners episodes.
"All ABC content is subject to the same rigorous editorial decision making processes before being published," the spokesperson said in a statement. "The decision to publish is only made once all requirements, including editorial and legal requirements, have been met and it is appropriate to do so."
Mr Porter dropped his defamation action against the ABC over its reporting of a historical rape allegation against him on Monday, but the settlement deal was followed by an exchange of barbs between the parties as they disputed the details. Mr Porter strenuously denies the allegations.
Mr Anderson is expected to appear before a parliamentary committee next week to face questions about the settlement of a defamation case brought by Mr Porter.
Board director Joseph Gersh said earlier today editorial decisions were made by the editor-in-chief, editorial staff, and managing director, Mr Anderson.
He said he would have preferred rape allegations against Industry Minister Christian Porter were never made but asserted it was the national broadcaster's responsibility to hold the powerful to account.
"The ABC has to be frank and fearless in what it does, in holding those in power to account and it has to do so consistently with its charter and editorial policies, and the board can't interfere," Mr Gersh said. "Would I prefer a world in which these allegations were never made? Yes. But that's not my choice. And nor is it my role as a board member to stop the ABC acting professionally in the pursuit of its obligations to the public."
The Qanon conspiracy theory centres on discredited claims about an international paedophile ring involving politicians and celebrities.
The Guardian reported in 2019 that a family friend of the Prime Minister is a key follower of the movement.

Police won't charge ABC journalist over 'Afghan Files' stories
Police will not lay charges against an ABC journalist over stories revealing allegations of potential war crimes by Australian special forces in Afghanistan, after prosecutors found it would not be in the public interest.
The Australian Federal Police said it had finalised its investigation into ABC journalist Dan Oakes and he would not be prosecuted.
It was revealed in July this year that the AFP had sent a brief of evidence to the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, after three years of investigating Oakes and his colleague, Sam Clark, over their 2017 "Afghan Files" series of stories.
The AFP had recommended the CDPP consider charging Oakes over the leak, but was not referring any case against Clark.
In a statement on Thursday afternoon, the AFP confirmed it had submitted a brief of evidence to the CDPP "regarding three potential criminal charges relating to the matter".
"The CDPP has advised the AFP that it determined there were reasonable prospects of conviction in relation to two of the charges," the AFP said.
"In determining whether the matter should be prosecuted, the CDPP considered a range of public interest factors, including the role of public interest journalism in Australia's democracy. The CDPP determined the public interest does not require a prosecution in the particular circumstances of this case.
"As a result of this determination, the AFP has finalised its investigation into Mr Oakes."
The CDPP decision comes after Attorney-General Christian Porter last year declared he would be "seriously disinclined" to authorise the prosecution of journalists for publishing secret information.
ABC managing director David Anderson said the public broadcaster welcomed the AFP's decision, but also maintain the view the matter should never have gone this far.
"That the CDPP has reached the decision that prosecuting our journalists is not in the public interest only compounds what we have argued all along: Journalists in this country should not be prosecuted for doing their jobs and legislation needs to be changed to provide proper protection for journalists and their sources when they are acting in the public interest," Mr Anderson said.
"This whole episode has been both disappointing and disturbing.
"The Afghan Files is factual and important reporting which exposed allegations about Australian soldiers committing war crimes in Afghanistan."
Federal police raided the ABC's Sydney headquarters on June 5, 2019, over the leaked documents.
The documents revealed incidents of Australian troops killing unarmed men and children, which were being investigated as potential unlawful killings.
ABC's news director Gaven Morris said the pressure on Oakes and Clark during the investigation has been "extreme, and they have handled it with admirable fortitude".
"It's more than three years since the ABC published The Afghan Files and over a year since the AFP raided our Ultimo building hunting information on the confidential sources for that reporting," Mr Morris said.
"While we're enormously relieved the ordeal is now over for them, the ABC's fight for public interest journalism to be protected is far from over.
"We will always back our journalists to report independently and without fear or favour stories Australians' have a right to know."

Australian correspondents Bill Birtles and Mike Smith pulled out of China after five-day diplomatic standoff over national security case
1/3
The ABC's China correspondent says he felt like a "pawn in a diplomatic tussle" after being barred, along with another Australian journalist, from leaving the country unless they consented to be interviewed by police about a national security case they were not involved with.
Bill Birtles, the ABC's correspondent based in Beijing, and Mike Smith, the AFR's correspondent based in Shanghai, boarded a flight to Sydney last night after the pair were questioned separately by China's Ministry of State Security.
Birtles had spent four days sheltering in Australia's embassy in Beijing, while Smith took refuge in Australia's Shanghai consulate as diplomats negotiated with Chinese officials to allow them to safely leave the country.
The saga began early last week, when Australian diplomats in Beijing cautioned Birtles that he should leave China, with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade giving the same advice to ABC's managing director David Anderson in Sydney.
Subsequent advice prompted the ABC to organise flights back to Australia for Birtles. He was due to depart last Thursday morning.
But the threatening behaviour from Chinese officials peaked before he could leave, when seven police officers arrived at Birtles' apartment at midnight last Wednesday as he was holding farewell drinks with friends and colleagues.
They told him he was banned from leaving the country, and that he would be contacted the next day to organise a time to be questioned over a "national security case".
Birtles described the late-night visit as "extraordinary and unprecedented".
"On one hand, this is urgent enough for them to rock up to my front door at midnight, with a total of seven people to tell me I'm involved in a state security case, on the other hand they say, 'Hey, we'll ring you tomorrow afternoon to organise a chat,'" Birtles said.
"It posed more questions than answers."
Birtles called the Australian embassy and arranged to be collected from his apartment. He stayed in the Beijing diplomatic compound for the next few days, where he was contacted by Chinese officials demanding an interview.
He initially refused to speak with them, citing fears for his personal safety.
Birtles was interviewed by Chinese authorities on Sunday after an agreement was reached between Australian and Chinese officials that his travel ban would be lifted if he spoke to them.
"I felt like I suddenly, unintentionally had become a pawn in some sort of diplomatic tussle," he said.

After Assange's Espionage Act Indictment, Police Move Against More Journalists for Publishing Classified Material
RP from QRes#8559
"I'd say to all the journalists at the ABC and all the journalists across Australia, don't be afraid of the job you do."....

Australian police raids on national broadcaster, News Corp prompt outcry
RP from QRes#8536

ABC defends free advertising to 'disgraced' Fraser Anning
The ABC has defended its decision to give free advertising time to controversial Queensland politician Fraser Anning.
The extreme-right Conservative National Party leader, who has expressed anti-Muslim views and referenced Adolf Hitler's 'final solution', will be allowed to air his material on ABC radio.
ABC Melbourne radio host Jon Faine on Tuesday said he was "appalled" at the decision during an on-air interview questioning the broadcaster's managing director David Anderson.
"Are you aware that this afternoon our free radio ad is providing free air time on the ABC to Fraser Anning?
"How do you feel about that because I'm appalled."
Mr Anderson said Senator Anning's party fell within the ABC's guidelines for political advertising during election time. They have been in place since 1932.
"We are being consistent with what we offer; we are being impartial in our decisions here," said Mr Anderson to which Faine asked: "Are you entirely comfortable with the guidelines applied in that way?"
Mr Anderson said: "I am comfortable that we are applying the same rules to everybody and we will take a look at all political parties when it comes to content of what free airtime they are using."
Faine questioned whether it was right for the ABC to provide Senator Anning with a platform for his party's views even if he fell under the guidelines relating to the status of a political party.
"You have the discretion to say, 'Well, even though it's in the guidelines it's not within the spirit of the guidelines'," Faine said.
"He was elected with 19 votes. He's been disgraced at every turn. His policies are abhorrent to the vast majority of the Australian public and we're giving him free air time."
Senator Anning was widely condemned for insensitive comments after the massacre of Muslims in Christchurch.
A spokesperson for Senator Anning said in a statement the political leader was entitled to express his views and was an "ardent supporter of free speech".
"In a liberal democracy free speech is a fundamental tenet which allows for the open discussion of ideas," the spokesman said.
"Mr Faine is entitled to express his views and though Senator Anning may disagree with them, he will continue to support Mr Faine's right to express them.
"If Senator Anning isn't allowed to speak freely, what hope do everyday Aussies have to speak their mind."
ABC Friends national spokesman Ranald Macdonald told The New Daily he also supported the ABC's commitment to giving all political parties free advertising during an election.
Mr Macdonald provided an independent report to prime minister John Gorton (1968-1971) during a review of the ABC's political advertising policies and recommended the practice be continued.
"I completely agree that everyone should be given the air time and it should be paid for by the community," Mr Macdonald said.
"I can understand Jon Faine's viewpoint, but I believe in the resilience and importance of a robust democracy and everyone has the right of freedom of expression, whether it's distasteful or not.
"The audience should be treated as adults and given the option of hearing everyone's views and reaching their own conclusions and it should be paid for by taxpayers."
An ABC spokesperson said in a statement that the national broadcaster had been facilitating the democratic process in this way since its inception.
"This grants them (political parties) the opportunity to explain directly to the electorate the policies for which they are seeking voters support," the statement said.
"Such announcements must inform voters about election policy matters and must meet strict production guidelines."

Canadian MP slams assisted suicide regime 'forcing doctors and medical professionals to provide patients death'

'I am proud to rise today to begin the debate on my private member's bill, Bill C-268, the Protection of Freedom of Conscience Act,' Kelly Block told the Canadian House of Commons last week.'
May 31, 2021 (Euthanasia Prevention Coalition) - The following speech was by Kelly Block (MP) in the House of Commons on May 27, 2021. Kelly Block has sponsored conscience rights Bill C-268.
Sign the petition supporting Bill C-268.
Madam Speaker, I am proud to rise today to begin the debate on my private member's bill, Bill C-268, the Protection of Freedom of Conscience Act. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge this bill is built on the hard work and determination of former members of Parliament. The first iteration that sought to address this issue was introduced by the late Mark Warawa in 2016, but it did not progress when the government introduced Bill C-14.
I do consider it a tremendous honor that my bill is the same number, C-268, as his was. After Bill C-14 was passed into law, my former colleague David Anderson introduced his private member's bill, Bill C-418, which died on the Order Paper when the election was called in 2019.
I would like to thank all those who have been championing this issue for many years and for their willingness to work with me.
Experts throughout Canada provided information and advice, while thousands of Canadians have voiced their support for protecting our fundamental freedoms. While there are numerous dictionaries that define conscience, they are consistent in defining it as an individual's inner sense of knowing the difference between what is right and wrong and that guides their behaviour.
An article by Cardus called "The Imperative of Conscience Rights" references the following:
"Conscience" traces to the Latin conscientia, and is related to the Greek synderesis. While conscientia refers to the application of our moral knowledge to particular situations, synderesis refers to the moral awareness built into each person and that urges us to do good and avoid evil.
Bill C-268 is straightforward as it seeks to enshrine in law a minimum national standard of conscience protections for medical professionals while respecting the jurisdiction of my provincial colleagues to expand on it. It is a response to calls from disability rights groups, first nations, the Ontario Medical Association and many hundreds of medical and mental health professionals to protect conscience rights.
It would ensure the medical professionals who choose to not take part in, or refer a patient for, assisted suicide or medical assistance in dying would never be forced by violence, threats, coercion or loss of employment to violate the freedoms protected in section 2(a) of the charter. This bill also serves to protect the rights of patients to receive a second opinion, and by doing so, would protect our health care system.
In my consultations, I spoke with disability rights advocate Heidi Janz. She told me about being born in the Soviet Union. Doctors told her parents that Heidi would never walk, talk or think and that she would be dependent on others for the rest of her short life. They told her parents to put her into an institution and forget they ever had her. Heidi Janz has severe cerebral palsy.
Her parents did not listen to the dominant narrative of their day. They loved their daughter and believed her life had value. Eventually, they found the support they needed. Today, Dr. Heidi Janz holds a Ph.D. and is an adjunct professor of ethics at the University of Alberta. In her spare time she is a playwright and author, and somehow, despite how busy her life is, she also serves as the chair of the ending of life ethics committee for the Council of Canadians with Disabilities.
Dr. Janz is a remarkable woman. While some might pity her, she will have none of it. She says that everyone talks about how bad it must be to have a disability, but that she chooses daily to live in opposition to that narrative. She also says that disabled people can be so much more than their diagnosis, and that she is proof of that fact.
If it had been up to the dominant view of her day, she would never have had the chance to disprove that narrative. If her parents did not have the option to find the help they wanted to get that crucial second opinion, none of my colleagues in this place would be hearing about this marvellous woman. This is not just a theoretical story.

The Global Task Force for Public Media (GTF) is a group of eight leaders of major public service media from around the world.
Established in 2020 and chaired by Catherine Tait, President and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, the GTF provides "an important opportunity to strengthen the great work each of us does for citizens in our countries. I look forward to working with other like-minded public media around the world."
The Global Task Force exists to defend the values and the interests of Public Media.' (i.e. it is a lobbying group) Its members include:

The Public Media Alliance (PMA) is the largest global association of public media organisations and focuses specifically on providing advocacy and support for public media worldwide.
Founded in 1945 as the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA), the organisation today has a global membership, offering members an equal opportunity to exchange ideas, views and best practice in public media. Our vision is a world where the public can continue to access free, independent, engaging and representative national and international media wherever they are.
The Public Media Alliance is a membership association of 102 TV and radio broadcasting organisations with a public service remit. We are a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, with a UK-based staff.
In July 2020, when FB announced that it had begun labelled content originating from state-controlled media organizations, PMA said these "attacks on public media are an attack on democracy".
In April 2020, the GTF indicated that the common duties of the public media is: inform, educate, entertain, and engage. The task force seeks to contribute to the public discourse on the issues and challenges facing public media such as financial pressure, competition for audience share in the digital market, and online disinformation. Seven values are listed in its mission statement: access, accuracy, accountability, creativity, impartiality, independence, and high standards of journalism.
The GTF cites examples of its work done by public media during the pandemic (i.e. fear porn):
- ABC:
→ Coronacast podcast, giving updates on COVID and answering listener's questions.
→ ABC Education: Launched a $5M fund to supercharge development of content geared towards children, linked to educational curriculum
- BBC:
→ Bitesize Daily, a broadcast and online education platform, linked to educational curriculum
→ Big Night In, celebrating acts of kindness, humour, and spirit of hope
- CBC:
→ Creative Relief Fund, funding $3M to initiatives in the creative industry
→ CBC Kids programming, a Q&A period with Trudeau and Theresa Tam on COVID
-France Televisions:
→ Lumni, an education platform for youth
→ #OnVousRépond, a Q&A initiative on the pandemic
- RNZ:
→ Coronavirus Podcast, Q&A and 'information' podcast
→ #StandAtDawn, A Remembrance Day initiative for Anzac Day
- SVT:
→ Data Visualization, data visualization platform for COVID
→ An evening together, Fundraiser for COVID and entertainment event with the Swedish musical elite
- ZDF:
→ Adaptation, Programming updates in light of the COVID pandemic
→ Children's content, COVID content for kids and topics for homeschooling
Prior work of this organization was an open letter in Financial Times in support of the British, Australian and Danish public broadcasters, which had experienced funding and staff cuts and, in the case of ABC, been served with search warrants.
