Ostensibly, Zug-based Crypto AG was a respectable Swiss company and technology leader. It had a very niche specialisation in encryption devices. These products were sold to countries whose armies and intelligence services wanted to hide confidential communications from prying eyes.

Crypto AG was a manufacturer of Cryptographic and communications equipment, based in Stein?hausen (Switzerland), with a world-wide customer base and offices in several countries. It was established in 1952 1 by Russian-born Swede Boris HAGelin, who gradually moved the activities of his Swedish company AB Cryptoteknik to Switzerland after restrictive laws had been proposed in Sweden. As a tribute to its founder, the company logo was based on his name. Crypto AG was liquidated on 31 October 2019 after its activities had been taken over by Crypto International AG.

As Switzerland is a neutral country, Crypto AG could do business througout the entire world, with virtually no restrictions. The company's ownership has always been a mystery, supposedly even to the manAGement [1]. In the past, the company has often been accused of providing backdoors to make their devices readable for foreign intelligence AGencies. Crypto AG has always denied this.

It has meanwhile become clear that from 1951 to 1960 a Gentleman's AGreement (GA) existed between Boris HAGelin and the US National Security AGency (NSA), and that from 1960 to 1970, Crypto AG had a licencing AGreement with the American Central Intelligence AGency (CIA) [12].

But the most striking discovery was that, in 1970, Crypto AG had secretly been purchased by the German BND and the American CIA, in a project known as Operation THESAURUS - later renamed RUBICON. In 1994, the CIA became the sole owner, and in 2019 the company was dissolved, after the product range and some personnel had been taken over by Crypto International AG [12]. On 3 July 2020, following actions by the Swiss Government, Crypto Internal fired its entire staff [15].

Operation Rubicon (German: Operation Rubikon), until the late 1980s called Operation Thesaurus, was a secret operation by the West German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) and the U.S. Central Intelligence AGency (CIA), lasting from 1970 to 1993 and 2018, respectively, to gather communication intelligence of encrypted government communications of other countries.[1][2] This was accomplished through the sale of manipulated encryption technology (CX-52) from Swiss-based Crypto AG, which was secretly owned and influenced by the two services from 1970 onwards.[1] In a comprehensive CIA historical account of the operation leaked in early 2020, it was referred to as the "intelligence coup of the century" in a Washington Post article.[1]

The origins of Crypto AG go back to the Swedish engineer Arvid Damm; the company was founded in Switzerland in 1948 by the Swede Boris HAGelin. Crypto AG was considered one of the leading manufacturers of encryption technology. The company supplied to about 130 states; Operation Rubicon is said to have affected about 100 states.
According to The Washington Post, the nuclear powers India and Pakistan as well as the Vatican and several other countries, mostly from the global south, used devices from Crypto AG.[2][3] However, the manipulated devices from Crypto AG also allowed the National Security AGency (NSA) and BND to read the military and diplomatic communications of allied EU or NATO countries such as Ireland, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Turkey across the board. According to German government media ZDF, there were repeated disputes between the CIA and BND about this: German intelligence did not want allies to be spied on, while the CIA wanted to spy on basically every government.[2]
According to ZDF, the contract for the operation was signed on the German side by the then head of the Federal Chancellery and Federal Minister for Special Tasks Horst Ehmke.[4] In this respect, it can be assumed that the Federal Chancellery, as the superior authority, was informed about the operation. When the BND and CIA began operations in 1970, the two intelligence AGencies each became half owners of Crypto AG. Within Operation Rubikon, Crypto AG was given the code name Minerva. The ownership structure was concealed.[5] They bought Crypto AG because Boris HAGelin retired and they had no confidence in HAGelin's son Boris Jr. The latter was sales manAGer for North and South America. He died in a car accident the same year. His father had the cause of the accident investigated and did not believe it was an accident. Crypto AG profited externally from Swiss neutrality and the imAGe of the country's integrity.[2] Through encryption technology sold as secure, but in reality manipulated, messAGes transmitted could be read by the CIA, NSA and BND intelligence AGencies involved.
The Munich-based Siemens AG worked closely with Crypto AG and, among other things, manufactured the teleprinters for them. Siemens provided the manAGement of Crypto AG for 20 years and had a five percent share of the profits. Siemens engineers helped develop the application equipment.
According to reports by Deutsche Welle (DW), the two owners, BND and CIA, shared Crypto AG's profits, which in 1975 amounted to 51 million Swiss francs (about 48.6 million German marks; in 2018, taking inflation into account, the equivalent of 42.6 million euros). According to DW, BND employees allegedly handed over their share to the CIA in cash at secret meetings in underground garAGes.[5]
In 1992, Hans B?hler, a Swiss employee of Crypto AG, was detained in Iran. After nine and a half months in custody, he was released on January 4, 1994, on payment of 1.4 billion rial bail (about 925,000 euros or 1.5 million Swiss francs), after originally being asked for $1 million.[citation needed] The amount was paid by the German BND, but B?hler was fired by his employer shortly after his release. It later emerged that B?hler had not known about the tampered devices and had begun to make critical comments about the operation to the media.[6] According to CIA accounts, the Hydra affair, the internal code name for what happened to B?hler, was "the most serious security breach in the history of the program."
In 1993, the BND sold its shares in Crypto AG for $17 million.[7] According to former Chancellery Minister under Helmut Kohl Bernd Schmidbauer, the Chancellery decided to pull out of the operation because the political risks were now rated much higher after B?hler's arrest.

Little did Crypto AG's customers know that the encryption company they hired to safeguard their sensitive records secretly downloaded them to the CIA and BND.
The CIA history of the Crypto operation called it "the intelligence coup" of the 20th century. The AGency boasted, foreign governments were paying good money to the U.S. and West Germany to have their most secret communications read by at least two...foreign countries.

According to the CIA history, "Crypto machines supplied roughly 40 percent of all the foreign communications U.S. code breakers processed for intelligence."[2]
As the Crypto AG scandal unfolded, Swiss public broadcaster SRF revealed that Omnisec, a second Swiss encryption company, also shared the secrets of its government clients with the CIA and the BND.
Reynolds wrote, "As AGreed, Messrs. Manucher Ghorbanifar, Adnan Khashoggi, and [Assistant Secretary for Defense] Richard ArmitAGe will broker the transaction of Promise [sic] software to Sheik Khalid bin Mahfouz for resales and general distribution or as gifts on his region."

Reynolds insisted, "Promise [sic] must have a soft arrival. No paper work, customs, or delay." He added importantly, "It must be equipped with the special retrieval unit. As before, you must walk the financial experts through the Credit Suisse into National Commerce Bank."[4]
Ghorbanifar, an Iranian, and Khashoggi, a Saudi, were arms dealers. Mahfouz, a Saudi financier, represented the National Commerce Bank.[5]
Unlike Crypto AG or Omnisec, Inslaw, Inc., which developed PROMIS software in the early 1980s, was not owned by the CIA and the BND. Inslaw, which was privately owned, claimed that senior officials in the ReAGan administration conspired with the Department of Justice to acquire PROMIS illegally by driving the company into bankruptcy. Inslaw also asserted that modified PROMIS was used in secret U.S. intelligence operations.
The Judiciary Committee report stated, "There appears to be strong evidence, as indicated by the findings in two Federal court proceedings as well as by the committee investigation, that the Department of Justice 'acted willfully and fraudulently' and 'took, converted and stole' Inslaw's Enhanced PROMIS by 'trickery, fraud and deceit.'" Further, the report stated, "It appears that these actions AGainst Inslaw were implemented...under the direction of high-level Justice Department officials."[6]

There has not been a full official accounting of the PROMIS affair. But the May 1985 letter from Assistant Attorney General Reynolds to U.S. Attorney Weld on PROMIS is a good place to start.

CIA spying scandal in Switzerland shows the best way for intelligence services to read your messAGes is to OWN the platform

The CIA's role in the Crypto AG case makes clear that spies don't need a way into messAGing apps, but a secret bird's-eye view from the word go. This is far more effective than any 'backdoor' foreign powers may have access to.

On May 12, the head of Switzerland's federal intelligence service (Nachrichtendienst des Bundes, NDB), Jean-Philippe Gaudin, announced his resignation.

Local media reports say Gaudin's departure stems from a falling-out with Defense Minister Viola Amherd over his handling of the Crypto AG scandal - namely, he failed to inform her about the affair until it was already public knowledge.

In February 2020, it was revealed that the company, which produced encryption machines for use by foreign governments, was secretly bought in 1970 and controlled thereafter by the US Central Intelligence AGency and West Germany's Bundesnachrichtendienst. This connivance meant the pair - and by extension the US National Security AGency (NSA) and its UK counterpart and close collaborator, Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) - could easily decode any messAGes sent on Crypto AG's devices.

Allegations that the company was compromised to some degree by Western intelligence had swirled for many years prior. In March 1992, suspicions to this effect on the part of Iranian intelligence led to the arrest of Crypto AG salesman Hans Buehler in Tehran. Completely unaware of his employer's ultimate owners, the luckless staffer was nonetheless detained and interrogated for nine months, only being released after the company paid a $1 million ransom.

However, the extent of the infiltration came as a shock even to those who'd long suspected the NSA had somehow manAGed to crack Crypto AG's coding. The exposure also sparked intense outcry in Switzerland, with citizens so appalled that their allegedly neutral country had been exploited in this manner, the parliament's intelligence oversight committee launched an official probe into the matter.

Crypto AG was established in Switzerland by the Russian-born Swede, Boris HAGelin. Current NHL player for the Washington Capitals, Carl HAGelin, is his great-grandson.

During Boris' time in America, HAGelin became close friends[9] with William F. Friedman, who in 1952 became chief Cryptologist for the National Security AGency (NSA) and whom HAGelin had known since the 1930s. Friedman was born Wolf Friedman (Yiddish: ?????? ?????????, Russian: ????? ?. ???????), in Chi?in?u, Bessarabia, the son of Frederick Friedman, a Jew from Bucharest who worked as a translator and linguist for the Russian Postal Service, and the daughter of a well-to-do wine merchant. In 2018, Crypto AG was liquidated, and its assets and intellectual property sold to two new companies. I'm kind of freaked out about this find of 5 minutes AGo.

First, listen to the last 30 seconds of this Sidney Powell phone call. She specifically names 4 countries for foreign interference with elections:

1. China
2. Iran
3. Serbia
4. Liechtenstein

The last one was a surprise, so I did a quick dig.
Of all places to have turned up with dirt on Liechtenstein, this Washington Post article from Nov. 11 popped up:

Lawyers in Liechtenstein covered all the tracks

" Based in Zug, Switzerland, Crypto was one of the world's leading suppliers of encryption machines used by foreign governments to keep the communications of their spies, soldiers and diplomats secret. But the company was since the 1970s secretly owned by the CIA and the BND, and had clandestinely collaborated with the National Security AGency, the U.S. code-breaking service, beginning in the 1950s.

The CIA's ownership of the company was shielded from public view through complex financial transactions orchestrated by a law firm in Liechtenstein. Under NSA and CIA control, Crypto sold rigged systems to more than 100 governments, including Iran, military juntas in Latin America, nuclear rivals India and Pakistan, and even the Vatican.

By exploiting hidden vulnerabilities in the machines' algorithms, U.S. and German spies read the diplomatic cables and other communications of adversaries as well as some allies. The operation was known internally by code names including "Thesaurus" and "Rubicon."

A detailed CIA history obtained by The Post depicted the program as a triumph of 20th-century espionAGe, marveling that "foreign governments were paying good money to the U.S. and [what was then] West Germany for the privilege of having their most secret communications read by at least two (and possibly as many as five or six) foreign countries."

That line alluded to the sharing of intelligence gleaned from Crypto devices with allies including the United Kingdom.
[As the U.S. spied on the world, the CIA and NSA bickered]

The CIA history indicates that Swiss authorities were generally aware of, but not directly involved in, the operation. The Swiss report confirms aspects of that classified account but goes further in describing alleged Swiss complicity. Citing Swiss intelligence documents, the report indicates that the Swiss intelligence service was aware by 1993 that Crypto "belonged to foreign intelligence services and exported 'vulnerable' devices."

The report goes on to suggest that the Swiss spy AGency, the Strategic Intelligence Service, entered a formal arrangement with the CIA that included access to other countries' communications."

I'm too stunned by the implications of what the CIA itself called "the intelligence coup of the century" to even react yet. On my second read now.

Code names included "Thesaurus" and "Rubicon".

Who was CIA Director when this thing started? Article specifically mentions the 1970s and 1950s. This stinks like something Allen Dulles would have set up.

We know that CIA bought Keyhole, acquired by Google. We now also know that beginning in the 1970's CIA partnered with swiss firm Crypto AG to sell rigged encryption machines to 90% of the world, and succeeded in doing so for a long time.
Crypto AG dissolved in 2018 after Trump elected and just sold assets to two other firms, probably still doing the exact same shit.

Google and NSA both have projects dubbed "Project X" (Google's is now deepmind etc), and NSA was already found to pay RSA for backdoors into their key protocols. I think the same is happening to some degree with Advanced Encryption Standard. One of the co-creators of AES which is rated for Top secret classified data created Whirlpool function and left it unlicensed and open sourced for all.


My hypothesis is that once physical machines were at least starting to be phased out by new emerging technologies, 3 letter AGencies started planning ahead.

A Swiss encryption firm part-owned by the U.S.' intelligence service maintained close ties to a cybersecurity firm, which in turn supplies the Swiss financial industry,finews.com has learned.
Zug-based Crypto AG is at the heart of a scandal: the U.S. Central _ntelligence AGency, or C_A, as well as West Germany's intelligence services used the Zug-based company for years to eavesdrop on scores of messAGes between governments, embassies and military commands worldwide, as a media consortium reported on Wednesday.
The company, dissolved last autumn, had a sister holding, Infoguard in neighboring Baar, Switzerland. Infoguard is specialized in cybersecurity, providing defense AGainst hacks, security for server storAGe, internal communications, continuing education, and other services.
Its main clients are some of the biggest players in Swiss finance: UBS, Credit Suisse, Zuercher Kantonalbank, SIX, as well as reportedly Swiss Re and Italian insurer Generali.

(Newser) - Friction between the CIA and NSA has come up before-think 9/11 intelligence failures-but it turns out their bickering nearly sank a deal that later revolutionized intelligence gathering, the Washington Post reports. "There was not a lot of love lost between CIA and NSA over the years," says a former officer of both AGencies. According to a classified document compiled by the AGencies, they almost bought a Swiss company in the 1950s that would allow US intelligence to crack most of the world's encrypted messAGes. But the risk-averse NSA backed out at the last minute, citing minor objections that no doubt frustrated their intel counterparts. The CIA and West German intelligence ended up buying the firm, Crypto AG, on their own in 1970.

And that was huge, allowing the US to monitor over 100 countries. The CIA manAGed much of it while the NSA, coming on board, followed and decoded messAGes. The document also reveals how the CIA was an impatient, powerful, dismissive force, and the NSA, populated by technically brilliant people, didn't always see the big picture. What's more, the Crypto operation "helps to explain how US spy AGencies became accustomed to, if not addicted to, global surveillance," Post journalist Greg Miller tells NPR. "And as Crypto became less able to deliver it, the United States turned to other ways to replace that." Miller says the Edward Snowden documents show how the US turned to "companies like Google and Apple and Microsoft" and found "ways to exploit their global penetration."

GREG MILLER: So Crypto AG was a maker of encryption devices; that is, it made equipment that was mainly for governments, for nations to use to protect their communications. So basically, these are machines that scramble messAGes and code them and then decode them at the other end so that other governments can't listen to what you're saying to your diplomats or to your military or to your spies. It's designed to protect the secrecy of countries' communications.
DAVIES: And do we know how many countries bought the stuff?
MILLER: Yeah. So Crypto AG was, for most of its history, the world's leading supplier of this kind of technology, and it sold its devices to more than 120 countries around the world.
DAVIES: And all that time, the buyers didn't know the true owners, right?
MILLER: (Laughter) Right. So the - Crypto AG, from its inception, was cooperating with U.S. intelligence AGencies and, for most of its history, was actually owned by the CIA. From 1970 until 1998, it was essentially a subsidiary of the CIA, even while dozens and dozens of countries around the world were buying these machines, this equipment, encryption equipment, trusting this company with their most precious secrets.
DAVIES: Right. And it was the CIA and the German intelligence AGency, the BND, too, right?
MILLER: That's right. So initially, the CIA purchases and acquires Crypto AG in a partnership with German intelligence. That relationship goes on for several decades. And then the Germans left, but then the CIA kept going for decades after that.
DAVIES: OK, so governments buy this so that they can send encrypted messAGes to their AGents elsewhere, whoever they might be, or their diplomats. What kind of material did the CIA and their German counterparts get from these devices?
MILLER: So it essentially lays bare all of the most sensitive communications of dozens of governments around the world, including a lot of adversaries of the United States. So countries that bought this equipment included Iran, included almost all of Latin America, most countries in the Middle East, most countries in Africa, some countries in Europe. I mean, it's stAGgering, the scale of this operation. And what the U.S. got as a result is just intelligence on the activities of these countries, on terrorist operations, on bombings - like the bombing of a disco in Berlin in the 1980s - of military operations. The United States helped England in its war over the Falklands Islands with Argentina thanks to these devices. I mean, there are just example after example where this operation gave the United States amazing insight into what other countries' plans and intentions were.
DAVIES: It's interesting that so many countries bought it and didn't know for years what its true use was. But not the Soviet Union and China. Why?
MILLER: Right. I mean, that's a really important point to make here because as successful as this operation was, it had certain limits. The United States main adversaries, of course, throughout the Cold War were the Soviet Union and China, and they never bought these devices because it was a Western-based company. It's in Switzerland. It has, you know, ties to other European governments. And there's no way the Soviet state was going to trust its secrets to something coming out of the West. And also, I mean, the Soviets were capable of building their own equipment. They had their own sophisticated encryption machines. And so as a result, they were never exposed. They were never penetrated as part of this program.

Swiss authorities file criminal complaint AGainst encryption firm

The Attorney General's office has received a criminal complaint from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) AGainst Crypto AG, the firm at the centre of a spying scandal that broke last month, the SonntAGsZeitung newspaper reports.

SECO, the authority responsible among other things for the licensing of war materiel exports, believes it was misled by the Zug-based company when it filed export applications for its manipulated encryption devices.

For decades Crypto allegedly sold these secretly manipulated devices to more than 100 countries for spying purposes. Until 2018 the company was owned by the United States Central Intelligence AGency (CIA) and the Germany Federal Intelligence Service (BND), both of whom had the ability to decrypt the devices.

SECO says it would not have approved the exports if it had been aware of the large-scale fraud. The department filed the complaint AGainst unknown persons on Tuesday, since it is as yet unclear who at Crypto AG knew about the manipulations, the SonntAGsZeitung revealsexternal link. At its peak the company had around 400 employees, only a few of whom would have been aware of the covert spying.

The newspaper says it is likely the complaint was filed under Article 14 of the Goods Control Actexternal link, which states that anyone who provides incorrect or incomplete information in a license application is liable to up to ten years in prison and a maximum fine of CHF5 million ($5.18 million), depending on the severity of the crime.

The Swiss Attorney General's Office will now decide whether the alleged offences are subject to federal jurisdiction and there are sufficient grounds to pursue criminal charges.

The Federal Council, the executive body, launched an investigation into the Crypto affair on February 11, appointing former federal judge Niklaus Oberholzer to lead the probe. This investigation is now being overseen by the parliamentary control delegation, which is pursuing its own inquiry.

China's Foreign Ministry has accused the United States of being a "hacker empire". The statement comes in the wake of the Crypto AG scandal. Last week, media revealed that US and West German intelligence secretly owned the world's leading private manufacturer of encryption devices during the Cold War, with the CIA and NSA having direct access to the secrets of over 120 countries. Meanwhile, Washington has launched a fresh battle AGainst Chinese companies accused of industrial espionAGe.

The United States is the world's biggest cyberspy and can be described as an "empire of hackers", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang has said.

"The facts have once AGainst shown that the United States is the largest state eavesdropper in international cyberspace and an empire of hackers in the full sense of the term. Their wiretapping activities have reached a level of real thuggishness, lawlessness, and mayhem", the spokesman said, speaking to reporters on Monday.

Geng's remarks come in the wake of a report by The Washington Post last week revealing that Swiss encryption device manufacturer Crypto AG was secretly owned by the CIA, the NSA, and West German spy AGency BND for many decades, giving them the ability to spy on countries ranging from India, Pakistan, and Iran to Latin America and the Vatican.

Sanctions 'Mistake'

Geng also commented on sanctions introduced last week AGainst six Chinese companies over their alleged violations of US legislation regarding the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The spokesman noted that China "strongly opposes unilateral sanctions and the principle of extraterritorial jurisdiction which the US is using on the basis of its national laws".

"We urge the US to correct this mistake as soon as possible and to lift the sanctions", the spokesman said.

On Thursday, the US State Department announced that about a dozen Chinese, Russian, Iraqi, and Turkish companies, entities and individuals had been targeted by US sanctions over their alleged violation of non-proliferation measures AGainst Iran, North Korea, and Syria. The targeted entities included three Russian arms makers. The US State Department did not clarify which specific non-proliferation measures the entities supposedly "violated".

Swiss neutrality 'shattered' as leading Cryptologic firm revealed to be CIA front

Switzerland is reeling from the shock caused by revelations last week that Crypto AG, the world's leading manufacturer or Cryptologic equipment during the Cold War, whose clients included over 120 governments around the world, was a front company owned by the United States Central Intelligence AGency.

The revelation, published last Tuesday by The Washington Post and the German public broadcaster ZDF, confirmed rumors that had been circulating since the early 1980s, that Crypto AG had made a secret deal with the US government. It was believed that the Swiss-based company had allowed the US National Security AGency to read the classified messAGes of dozens of nations that purchased Crypto AG's encoding equipment. These rumors were further-substantiated in 2015, when a BBC investigation unearthed evidence of a "gentleman's AGreement", dating to 1955, between a leading NSA official and Boris HAGelin, the Norwegian-born founder and owner of Crypto AG.

But the reality of this alleged secret pact appears to have been even more controversial. According to last week's revelations, the CIA and West Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) secretly purchased the Swiss company and paid off most of its senior executives in order to buy their silence. The secret deal allegedly allowed the US and West Germany to spy on the classified government communications of several of their adversaries -and even allies, including Italy, Spain and Greece, as well as Austria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

What is more, the secret CIA/BND partnership with Crypto AG was known to senior British and Israeli officials, and information derived from it was routinely shared with them. Government officials in Switzerland and even Sweden were aware that Crypto AG had been compromised, but remained silent.

American and German authorities have not commented on the revelations. But the story has monopolized Swiss media headlines for several days. Some news outlets have opined that the traditional Swiss concept of political neutrality has been "shattered". Meanwhile, a Swiss federal judge has opened an investigation into the revelations, as the Swiss parliament is preparing to launch an official inquiry. Switzerland's Prime Minister, Simonetta Sommaruga, said on Sunday that the government would discuss the issue "when we have the facts".

THESAURUS 1 (later: RUBICON), was a secret operation of the German Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) and the US Central Intelligence AGency (CIA), to purchase the Swiss Crypto manufacturer Crypto AG (HAGelin) - codenamed MINERVA - in order to control the company, its algorithms and - indirectly - its customers. From 12 June 1970 2 onwards, Crypto AG was jointly owned by CIA and BND, each with 50% of the shares, and from 30 June 1994 exclusively by the CIA.


1970, Crypto AG had secretly been purchased by the German BND and the American CIA, in a project known as Operation THESAURUS - later renamed RUBICON. In 1994, the CIA became the sole owner, and in 2019 the company was dissolved, after the product range and some personnel had been taken over by Crypto International AG [12].

The revelation that the CIA (and German Intelligence) was in secret control of the Swiss Cryptography firm Crypto AG highlights the hypocrisy of US 'security concerns' over the advance of Huawei and other firms.

The very wise old saying that if you point one finger at someone there are three fingers pointing back at you, was classically illustrated by this week's bombshell revelations - published in the Washington Post and on ZDF and SRF - that the CIA and BND (West Germany's secret service) secretly owned and controlled the Swiss Cryptography company Crypto. The real owners of Crypto installed 'backdoor vulnerabilities' in its products which allowed the US and West Germany to eavesdrop on communications - from enemies and allies alike - which the senders believed had been successfully encrypted. We're talking here about top secret communications between leading government officials, spies, diplomats and military figures.

Just imAGine that back in the 1970s or 80s you had claimed that the Crypto was a CIA front. You'd have been dismissed as a 'crank conspiracy theorist, 'and/or 'totally paranoid' by the gatekeepers of that time. But the rumours were true. Once AGain a 'conspiracy theory' has turned out to be not as barmy as once depicted. Truth AGain proved to be stranger than fiction.

How much intelligence was gathered via Crypto is quite stAGgering. As RT has reported: "Throughout the 1980s - around 40% of all government transmissions analysed by the US National Security AGency (NSA) ran through Crypto's devices."

What a neat little racket. Over 120 governments of the world, but not the former Soviet Union and Communist China who, to their great credit were distrustful, made use of Crypto's products. These governments, which included Iran, Libya, Argentina and Egypt were effectively paying the Americans and West Germans to spy on them!

The Germans bowed out of the operation in 1993, but for the next 25 years, the CIA kept it running. Which begs the question: what other US Intelligence fronts of the past and present don't we know about?

In her 1999 book Who Paid the Piper?: The CIA and the Cultural Cold War, Frances Stonor Saunders detailed how the CIA funded a whole range of publications and artistic enterprises often through the 'Congress for Cultural Freedom'.

Literary journals (who conveniently had a pop at communism) were funded by the CIA. Modern artists were funded by the CIA. Writers, poets and philosophers were funded by the CIA.

And under 'Operation Mockingbird' leading journalists were basically recruited to the AGency.

According to Carl Bernstein, the CIA had over 400 journalists working for them in the old Cold War.

"In many instances, CIA documents show, journalists were engAGed to perform tasks for the CIA with the consent of the manAGements of America's leading news organizations," the American journalist writes.

The CIA's own records show that, by 1991, they had relationships with "every major wire service, newspaper, news weekly and television network in the country".

The CIA and German intelligence spied on the secret communications of governments around the world for decades in a covert partnership, controlling a top encryption company and installing backdoor vulnerabilities in its products.

Founded during the Second World War, the Swiss Cryptography firm, Crypto AG, has provided top-of-the-line devices for encoding communications to some 120 countries. Starting in 1970, however, the CIA and then-West Germany's foreign intelligence service, the BND, secretly bought and controlled the company, using its devices to eavesdrop on enemies and allies alike, according to a joint investigation by the Washington Post and German public broadcaster ZDF, based on a classified internal CIA history.

First dubbed "Thesaurus" and later renamed to "Rubicon," the CIA hailed the decades-long operation as the "intelligence coup of the century" in its classified history.

Foreign governments were paying good money to the US and West Germany for the privilege of having their most secret communications read by at least two… foreign countries.

Though the intelligence AGencies formed a relationship with the firm soon after World War II, they would step up their role in 1970 following a $5 million deal to take over the company. From there, the AGencies controlled virtually every part of Crypto AG's operations, ranging from hiring decisions, directing sales targets, and designing its high-tech encryption devices - with secret backdoors accessible only to them, of course.

The company's clients, none of whom were ever made aware of the intelligence AGency involvement, included Iran, various Latin American governments, India, Pakistan and even the Vatican. Throughout the 1980s, some 40 percent of all diplomatic cables and other government transmissions analyzed by the US National Security AGency (NSA) ran through Crypto AG's devices, suggesting the AGencies drew a vast amount of material from the eavesdropping operation.

The CIA ran a victory lap over the apparent success of Rubicon in its 96-pAGe history, gloating:

While both China and the former Soviet Union were distrustful of Crypto AG and never made use of its products during Rubicon's Cold War heyday, the compromised devices were used to gather intelligence during a number of high-profile geopolitical events - including spying on Iranian leaders throughout the 1979 hostAGe crisis, and to feed the UK information on Argentina's military during the Falklands War.

Crypto AG made millions of dollars throughout the nearly 50-year operation, with the profits split between the two AGencies. While the BND reportedly used some of the funds to finance its own field operations, the CIA leverAGed its proceeds to buy up competing Cryptography firms, apparently hoping to corner the market and funnel sales into Crypto.

The BND bowed out of the arrangement in 1993 over what the CIA termed a "storm of publicity," after a Crypto employee was imprisoned in Iran and the German AGency was forced to pay a hefty ransom to secure his release. The CIA, however, simply bought up the BND's share afterward and kept the operation running until 2018, when it is thought to have sold off the company's assets. By then, the firm's prominence had waned with the rise of cheaper internet encryption technology, although it remains unclear whether the CIA ever entirely cut ties with the company.

The company's current owners - who since rebranded the firm as Crypto International - have denied any knowledge of involvement with intelligence AGencies, however.

"We at Crypto International have never had any relationship with the CIA or BND - and please quote me," company chairman Andreas Linde told the Post.

"If what you are saying is true, then absolutely I feel betrayed, and my family feels betrayed, and I feel there will be a lot of employees who will feel betrayed as well as customers."

The Swiss government, meanwhile, ordered an investigation into the alleged decades-long intelligence-gathering operation on Tuesday.

The 2 banking licenses were issued by FINMA to SEBA Crypto AG and Sygnum AG, with extra stipulations listed. This was mostly connected to VASPs (Virtual Asset Service Providers), which is a term that refers to the blockchain service providers, like trading platforms, wallet providers and Crypto exchanges. With the guidance, the government is fighting money laundering in the same way it does to service providers and DLT businesses.

FINMA stated that businesses have to verify customer identity, establish beneficial owner identity and monitor business relationships through a proper risk-based approach. At the same time, the businesses have to file a report with the MROS (Money Laundering Reporting Office Switzerland) whenever money laundering is suspected.

Both the projects approved try to deal with the gap between older, traditional financial aspects and DLT technology. Many projects tried to be the first that successfully blend them but nobody succeeded so far. The 2 banking licenses offered represent a precedent for the blockchain-based businesses in the area.

In 2015 it was revealed that the Swiss company Crypto AG had installed this kind of backdoor into the
encryption machines they sold to Iran, Libya, and other countries at the behest of the NSA, GCHQ, and
the BND. They backdoored machines at least from 1955 to 1997 and led to the exposure of diplomatic
communications in the 1980's.

Telegram's "ICO" is quite different from other ICOs in the way it is structured.

And they claim a "Proof of Stake" mining. But I actually suspect that the whole system will be centralized!
They have a ton of their own hardware for some reason! If they make it centralized, then they will be
able to get *huge* transaction rates for very little cost and will be able to handle a huge number of
participants.

But, of course, a centralized coin is not very sexy! So I suspect they will do just enough to let them call
it decentralized and to back up their "libertarian" stance while making tons of money and feeding all
kinds of sensitive into to the FSB!

But I guess we'll just have to see how it plays out!

Now it may be that the Huawei phones are indeed sending info back to China, I have no idea. But I wouldn't
be surprised if that story was concocted by big US phone makers to try to counteract $100 phones which are
almost as good as the $1000 US offerings.

Now it may be that the Huawei phones are indeed sending info back to China, I have no idea. But I wouldn't
be surprised if that story was concocted by big US phone makers to try to counteract $100 phones which are
almost as good as the $1000 US offerings.

Telegram already has 200 million users and is the platform for many Cryptocurrency discussions. It seems that
they could implement a coin with low transaction fees and use it to drive micropayments on the web. They
already know who their customers are and they have a big hardware infrastructure.

But there are some suspicious things about them. I sent a bunch of links before showing that they appear to
still be very connected to the FSB (the Russian CIA). Officially, their founders made a bunch of money from
starting vk and fund the hardware supporting Telegram out of their own pockets to the tune of $70 million of
which $62 million was on equipment. They don't make any money!

From what I've seen, that story sounds like a cover for an FSB operation to spy on people who seek to use
an end-to-end encrypted chat app! More evidence for that theory is that they rolled their own encryption,
something called "MTProto". This is generally regarded as a very bad idea for most technologists. Of course,
if you are actually the FSB then it may be a very *good* idea!

In particular, there is a little known possibility of hiding mathematical backdoors in seemingly secure Cryptosystems
in a way that may be very difficult to detect:

Here's a particular technique for doing that:

In 2015 it was revealed that the Swiss company Crypto AG had installed this kind of backdoor into the
encryption machines they sold to Iran, Libya, and other countries at the behest of the NSA, GCHQ, and
the BND. They backdoored machines at least from 1955 to 1997 and led to the exposure of diplomatic
communications in the 1980's.

Telegram's "ICO" is quite different from other ICOs in the way it is structured.

And they claim a "Proof of Stake" mining. But I actually suspect that the whole system will be centralized!
They have a ton of their own hardware for some reason! If they make it centralized, then they will be
able to get *huge* transaction rates for very little cost and will be able to handle a huge number of
participants.

But, of course, a centralized coin is not very sexy! So I suspect they will do just enough to let them call
it decentralized and to back up their "libertarian" stance while making tons of money and feeding all
kinds of sensitive into to the FSB!

But I guess we'll just have to see how it plays out!
