One unstated aim of NIDS was to set an example and "make it viable for serious scientists to research [these topics] without ruining their reputations," Alexander explained.
Among the earliest projects undertaken by NIDS was the study of alleged alien implants, objects found in the bodies of people who claimed they'd been abducted by presumed ETs.
Bigelow funded nationwide surveys to determine how widespread alleged abductions might be.

NIDS also had an early interest in so-called mystery triangles, huge, silent, black triangles that were widely reported from the late 80s until the present.
"[Military jets] were left in the dust," NIDS deputy director Colm Kelleher said in 2004. "One minute, there triangles were overhead and the next they're on the horizon."

Kelleher, a biochemist, was one of three full-time hires made by NIDS in the summer of 1996, along with physicist Dr. Eric Davis, who worked on multiple classified projects, and veterinarian Dr. George Onet.
The main reason NIDS hired a veterinarian was because of an ongoing oddity-animal mutilations.
There had been more than 10,000 incidents across the U.S. where animals, mostly cattle, were carved up with surgical precision. Not a single perpetrator had ever been caught.

NIDS teams would fly to the scene of mutilations to search for physical evidence.
Robert Bigelow's personal interest in UFOs and mutilations led to a fortuitous purchase: A scenic, 480-acre ranch in northeastern Utah, which reportedly was a hotbed of unknown craft, animal mutilations, and other weirdness.

John Alexander accompanied Bigelow to meet the rancher. Bigelow bought the property, and NIDS began an intense multi-year investigation.
"It was interesting because you had a living laboratory because incidents were ongoing at the time," Alexander explained. "Over time, we learned more and more about the history because this goes back decades to centuries."

The NIDS board was divided about how to investigate what is now known as Skinwalker Ranch. Some favored a non-intrusive, low-tech approach.
Bigelow installed cameras, but whatever was behind the weird events at the ranch largely avoided detection. Alexander dubbed it "a precognitive sentient entity."
The disturbing phenomena witnessed by NIDS personnel were kept largely secret until after NIDS itself dissolved in 2004. If NIDS has a legacy, it is the scientific, but open-minded approach to the unknown.

"I think what we did is probably set up a prototype for how to approach these things, again, a purely scientific basis," Alexander said.
The only person Knapp told about that first NIDS board meeting was Senator Harry Reid, who had an interest in UFOs. Reid asked if he could attend a future meeting.
He did, and then 11 years later, he put together 22 million dollars to fund what became the largest UFO investigation in U.S. History-AAWSAP, which was modeled after NIDS and which is still a huge influence on the UFO topic.

The main focus was UFOs and UFO technology, but one smaller focus was measurable health effects on people who encountered a UFO and were physically harmed, or developed rare diseases, including psychological effects.
That allowed AAWSAP to cast a wide net and to report seemingly outlandish stories about creatures, poltergeist-type activity, and other weirdness.

Lacatski said that AAWSAP created a massive database of UFO accounts, but the witnesses were typically reluctant to admit that they also had paranormal experiences after encountering UFOs.
"We realized that people who openly say 'I observed a UFO up close,' maybe on the ground that they always seemed to have a paranormal connection in some ways, if you gently push them," Lacatski said.

The connection between UFO encounters and paranormal experiences isn't new. It traces back to the first big UFO event of the modern era.
In 1947, a pilot named Kenneth Arnold saw nine objects flying in formation over Washington State. His family said that for most of the rest of his life, Arnold's home was bedeviled by inexplicable phenomena.

Perhaps the strangest experience reported by nearly everyone in AAWSAP who visited the Bigelow Ranch is what is now known as the hitchhiker effect.
At least five highly experienced intelligence officers who went to the ranch to check things out, came into contact with paranormal phenomena, and then took it home with them.

They and their families would see balls of light inside their homes, shadowy figures, even creatures that were physical, not a mere mental image.
After one investigator returned from the ranch to his east coast home, his entire family was bedeviled by orbs and what they described as a wolf that walked on two legs.

"The one here in the Washington area, that's why you have to say paranormal," Lacatski explained. "I mean, what, did it get on a train or a plane to come to Washington? It left deep scratch marks on the tree it was resting against; there was physical evidence."
Among those who have reported hitchhiker type events, Dr. Colm Kelleher, the Las Vegas manager for AAWSAP, physicist Dr. Eric Davis, the DIA's Jay Stratton, several security personnel, and the former owner of the ranch, Robert Bigelow.

After the existence of AAWSAP was first reported by us in 2018, and the full scale of the strange phenomena it had examined was made public by Dr. Lacatski in his books, including the newest one, "New Insights."
Skeptics claimed the DIA had killed AAWSAP at the end of 2010 because the reports it received were simply too weird. The man who oversaw every part of AAWSAP said weirdness had nothing to do with it, that DIA leadership was supportive to the end.
"Did they ever have the opinion that this is getting kind of weird?" Knapp asked.

"No, they never did. They basically wanted it kept quiet, that's all," Lacatski explained. They didn't want to see it in The Washington Post."
Lacatski and others familiar with AAWSAP tried to find a new home for a spinoff version, something called Kona Blue. Harry Reid helped lead the charge, and the Department of Homeland Security initially said yes, then higher-ups killed it.
Lacatski's new book hints that some slice of Kona Blue did move forward, but he declines to spill further details about that for now.

A rocket scientist who directed a top-secret investigation into UFOs has spoken about the bizarre things his colleagues claimed to have witnessed.
Dr James Lacatski, an intelligence analyst previously with the Defense Intelligence Agency, revealed that during his time investigating UFOs, many witnesses recalled paranormal experiences after seeing the objects.
'We realized that people who openly say "I observed a UFO up close," maybe on the ground that they always seemed to have a paranormal connection in some ways, if you gently push them,' Lacatski told investigative journalist George Knapp in a recent interview with local CBS affiliate KLAS.

Lacatski directed the Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program, a top-secret initiative under the DIA in the 2000s.
He recalled that many officials with the AAWSAP experienced a 'hitchhiker effect' where they seemed to come into contact with paranormal phenomena long after they left the program's home base in Nevada.
Lacatski said that at least five highly experienced intelligence officers saw balls of light, shadowy figures, and even creepy creatures.

One investigator was plagued by mysterious orbs when he returned to his home on the East Coast, and even saw what he described as a wolf-like creature that walked on two legs, according to Lacatski.
'I mean, what, did it get on a train or a plane to come to Washington?' Lacatski questioned.

The AAWSAP launched in 2008 after officials at DIA became intrigued by reported paranormal experiences and UFO sightings in the Uinta Basin in northeastern Utah.
They determined that Bigelow Ranch, owned by Las Vegas aerospace titan Robert Bigelow, was a site of bizarre activity.
'I could see from my organization the threat potential, and we were uncovering many of the things you were observing, you know, strange creatures,' Lacatski told KLAS.
'I mean, think of inducing what might be called delusions by some people into an enemy force. We wanted to learn what can be weaponized here,' he continued.

Lacatski put together a team approved by DIA with his colleague Jay Stratton. Late Nevada Senator Harry Reid helped secure the funding for the project.
Bigelow also became an integral part of the initiative, with his company becoming the program's contractor.
The mission started as an investigation into UFO technology, but officials were also examining potential health impacts on witnesses who reported seeing UFOs.
The health impacts included psychological effects, and the AAWSAP started to observe a wide range of shocking, seemingly paranormal instances that witnesses to UFOs began having.

Lacatski said that multiple witnesses reported experiencing 'hitchhiker events,' where individuals seemed to take the experiences with them after seeing the UFO.
He added that the individuals who reported these bizarre events included the Las Vegas manager for AAWSAP Dr Colm Kelleher, physicist Dr Eric Davis, Stratton, several security workers, and Robert Bigelow himself.
The AAWSAP existed for only about two years before funding was paused. Lacatski told KLAS in November that Reid was worried about his reelection race in 2010 and was concerned that his involvement in the project would impact his chances of winning.
Reid also confided to Lacatski that there was a 'spy' in his Washington office leaking information to help his opponent win, according to Lacatski's account to KLAS.

Reid ended up securing a victory but lost his seat as Senate majority leader, and the program eventually fizzled out.
KLAS reporter Knapp had covered AAWSAP during its existence and met Lacatski in 2018 at a meeting arranged by Reid.
The government has not officially released any documents related to the program, but Lacatski has authored several books on the topic, including Skinwalkers at the Pentagon, co-authored with Knapp.

Lacatski released another book on his own in September, titled: Inside the US Government Covert UFO Program: New Insights, which revealed multiple paranormal phenomena the AAWSAP team experienced.
The Daily Mail reached out to DIA for comment on the AAWSAP's findings.

Fourteen years after AAWSAP ended, the D.I.A. has yet to release any of the original material. Lacatski is doing it himself.
His latest book, "Inside the U.S. Government Covert UFO Program: New Insights," makes the case that UFOs and seemingly paranormal phenomena related to UFO incidents are generated by someone or something that is not us.
"Can we say they are human? I don't think you can, no," Lacatski said. "We can be pretty well sure we're not dealing with humans. How can we ever know the ultimate answer?"

The material in the book is from government files, compiled by government personnel in a government-funded program. It may not count as official disclosure, but it is in the same ballpark.
"New Insights" includes remarkable UFO incidents, cases in which airline pilots were followed by huge unknown craft which changed shapes while in the air, eyewitnesses who experienced inexplicable physiological changes after close encounters, others who suffered major medical consequences, outbreaks of bizarre paranormal phenomena, and entities in the homes of dozens of people who had earlier seen orbs, triangles, or other weird craft.

Newly unveiled events from in and around the Utah ranch are the stuff of nightmares. Including creature sightings, macabre animal mutilations, and even an incident from the oddities known as the men in black.
Lacatski flat-out admits the government has in its possession at least one recovered craft of unknown origin, a flying machine with no wings, no engine, no fuel, and no fuel tanks.
"How do you know it is a craft if it has no fuel, no fuel tank?" Knapp asked Lacatski. "Did you see it fly? Are you convinced it was some sort of craft or machine?"
"Yes," Lacatski responded. "And by the way, Senator Reid asked that same question."

Like the late senator, Lacatski has no doubt our adversaries have their own programs to reverse engineer UFO tech.
The AAWSAP program completed almost everything it was designed to do in its 27-month existence. After that, the funding was suddenly paused.

Fingers have pointed at multiple possible culprits, but Lacatski now reveals the person responsible was Reid himself.
The senator confided to Lacatski that there was a spy in his Washington office who was leaking information to help the candidacy of Reid's 2010 opponent, Sharron Angle. Reid was widely expected to lose that race.
"He'd worried that if the story gets out, it affects his race and he'd no longer be a US Senator," Lacatski said.

Reid surprisingly won that race in a cake walk, but afterward, he was no longer the majority leader in the Senate.
Lacatski said Reid kept his word and secured funding for AAWSAP to continue in some form. We will explore that part of the story in a future report.
As a matter of disclosure, Knapp was the only journalist allowed to know about AAWSAP while it was underway, and later was one of the co-authors on two earlier books by Lacatski and his colleague Colm Kelleher, but he had no hand in the new book.

Dr Colm Kelleher, one of the AAWSAP managers, has said, bluntly, that UFOs are "bad for human health".

Vall?e believes the real truth has been kept secret because if the public knew that not only are we not alone, but that extra-terrestrial or extra-dimensional forces have killed humans with impunity, the very fabric of society could unravel.
In his most recent book, Forbidden Science 6: Scattered Castles, Vall?e shares behind-the-scenes chats with his AAWSAP cohorts, including Vegas tycoon Robert Bigelow.
Moreover, there are ongoing discussions among a tight-knit group of scientists, known as the Lonestars.
These boffins, some of whom are ex-CIA contractors, believe that the US government has retrieved crashed vehicles of unknown origin and that defence contractors have spent decades trying to crack the tech at top-secret desert locations and beyond.

They argue that rival nations are doing the same, putting national security on the line in this high-stakes technological race.
While Vall?e is all for openness, he fears that an official announcement could cause pandemonium.
"If we want to disclose... something as simple as saying, 'Yes, we acknowledge the phenomenon and it seems to be from space,' we would have to... answer a hundred other questions, that this is not the end of the story," Vall?e told KLAS.

"There are religious questions... there is a religious side to all this."
While Vall?e is encouraged by the renewed interest in UFOs within Congress, mainstream media, and academia, he thinks someone needs to craft a well-planned strategy for how to unleash what would likely be the biggest news story in history.
"I think... that we should disclose with a structure," Vall?e suggested, adding, "The structure hasn't been invented yet."

The Pentagon's former chief UFO investigator has revealed a sensitive new government program to recover 'alleged alien tech' in the event of a 'shoot down.'

Dr Sean Kirkpatrick - a longtime CIA scientist who headed the US military's UFO-chasing All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) - admitted to the program's existence when pressed during a new interview.

The retrieval program's protocols were for 'any UAP recovery' involving 'everything from balloons to drones to alleged alien tech,' as Dr Kirkpatrick told podcast host John Michael Godier.

In recent years, Pentagon brass, NASA experts and academics have all reframed what were once called 'flying saucers' as 'unidentified anomalous phenomena' (UAP).

The revelation is the first time that the US government has officially acknowledged a UAP or UFO retrieval program, despite decades of speculation and whistleblower testimony that America has already been in possession of alien craft for decades.

It also comes amid multiple federal investigations into 'mothership' UFOs over key US military sites, releasing hard to identify, much less catch, 'drone swarm' UFOs.

This week, the Pentagon's North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) admitted that America's military installations have been plagued, since 2022, by at least 600 so-called 'drone' incursions, many still unexplained.

Classified documents suggest that the new UFO crash retrieval program began in early 2023, with a focus on 'response and recovery and material transfer.'

Dr Kirkpatrick initiated high-level meetings formalizing AARO's version of a UFO crash retrieval program in January and February 2023 - according to the redacted documents released last September via the US Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

As one scheduling email explained: 'The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the disposition of funding within the context of safety and security implications of UAP.'

Establishing 'a receiving point' for any and all recovered UFO materials was one key issue to be addressed, the meeting memo added.

'The problem is those types of activities are already covered under Foreign Materiel Collection and Analysis,' as Dr Kirkpatrick told Godier and listeners to his Event Horizon podcast Thursday.

'There's already a process and procedures in place for many of these things,' he continued. 'So this conversation was really to start [asking]: How do we document that for UAP? And, what kind of procedures do we need to put in place?'

Since at least the dawn of the Cold War, America has had crash retrieval programs, led by the CIA, but comprising all branches of the US military.

These programs were set up mainly to acquire Russian and Chinese tech, including the CIA's top secret salvaging of a nuclear-equipped, sunken Soviet sub in 1974.

'Equally important was retrieving US fragments that had landed in foreign nations to prevent the Soviets from recovering and exploiting them,' according to curator James E. David of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.

Space Command was only the just one of the branches AARO consulted.

Leadership from the White House's Joint Chiefs of Staff also weighed in on the UFO recovery effort, including its directorates for intelligence (J2), operations (J3), strategy and policy (J5).

'AARO is Congressionally directed to come up with not just standard reporting procedures, but also mitigation and response procedures in the event of a shoot down or a collection of any sort of UAP,' Dr Kirkpatrick said.

'To do that mitigation and response, as well as standardized reporting,' he added, 'will occur through all of the combatant commands.'

'Because they already have people in place that would collect [crashes].'

'Like, if we shot down another Chinese high altitude balloon, it's that team that would go and collect it, right? It's those procedures and processes on how it gets notified and how we go and get it.'

Space Command records obtained via FOIA show that Dr Kirkpatrick had meetings to establish AARO's version of a UFO-specific crash retrieval program on April 10 with Gen. Glen D. VanHerck, Commander of US Northern Command.

General VanHerck, who led the mission to takedown the infamous Chinese spy balloon back in February 2023, has also taken a hard stance on domestic UFO cases.

'If there are unknown objects within North America,' he said of the recent wave of baffling drone swarms over US bases, 'go out and identify them.'

General VanHerck, who also has a leadership role over NORAD, has pled with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to authorize more electronic eavesdropping equipment to solve the severe national security mysteries involving the drone UFOs.

But the general has also acknowledged that strict rules govern the use of this level of espionage tech over US soil.

Although Dr Kirkpatrick told Event Horizon's listeners that he found no evidence that the US government has previously recovered an alien spacecraft via its past crash retrieval programs, several of his predecessors have contradicted his claims.


Dr James Lacatski, a former Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) analyst and missile expert who managed one UFO-centered program from 2008-2012, has claimed that the US not only has recovered alien spacecraft but that officials have gotten inside one.

'The United States,' as Dr Lacatski wrote in a 2023 book on that program, 'was in possession of a craft of unknown origin and had successfully gained access to its interior.'

This craft, as he briefed then US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in 2011, had 'no intakes, exhaust, wings, or control surfaces [...] no engine, fuel tanks, or fuel.'

Dr Lacatski's book, 'Inside the U.S. Government Covert UFO Program: Initial Revelations,' was co-authored with Las Vegas-based investigative reporter George Knapp and biochemist Dr Colm Kelleher.

Dr Kelleher had worked alongside Dr Lacatski from the private contractor side of the DIA's once highly secretive UFO program, the Advanced Weapons System. Application program (AAWSAP).

When asked by UFO documentary filmmaker Jeremy Corbell whether or not he himself had entered this recovered UFO, Dr Lacatski replied: 'I can't answer that.'

'If there are unknown objects within North America,' he said of the recent wave of baffling drone swarms over US bases, 'go out and identify them.'

General VanHerck, who also has a leadership role over NORAD, has pled with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin to authorize more electronic eavesdropping equipment to solve the severe national security mysteries involving the drone UFOs.
But the general has also acknowledged that strict rules govern the use of this level of espionage tech over US soil.
Although Dr Kirkpatrick told Event Horizon's listeners that he found no evidence that the US government has previously recovered an alien spacecraft via its past crash retrieval programs, several of his predecessors have contradicted his claims.

Dr James Lacatski, a former Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) analyst and missile expert who managed one UFO-centered program from 2008-2012, has claimed that the US not only has recovered alien spacecraft but that officials have gotten inside one.
'The United States,' as Dr Lacatski wrote in a 2023 book on that program, 'was in possession of a craft of unknown origin and had successfully gained access to its interior.'
This craft, as he briefed then US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in 2011, had 'no intakes, exhaust, wings, or control surfaces [...] no engine, fuel tanks, or fuel.'

Dr Lacatski's book, 'Inside the U.S. Government Covert UFO Program: Initial Revelations,' was co-authored with Las Vegas-based investigative reporter George Knapp and biochemist Dr Colm Kelleher.
Dr Kelleher had worked alongside Dr Lacatski from the private contractor side of the DIA's once highly secretive UFO program, the Advanced Weapons System. Application program (AAWSAP).
When asked by UFO documentary filmmaker Jeremy Corbell whether or not he himself had entered this recovered UFO, Dr Lacatski replied: 'I can't answer that.'

What is Kona Blue? The proposed Las Vegas UFO technology program unveiled

Information has recently surfaced shedding light on an ambitious program that would have researched UFO technology in southern Nevada, aiming to exploit the tech, interview witnesses to extraterrestrial activities, and study the physical and psychological effects of the encounters.
Code-named "Kona Blue," Las Vegas would have been in the eye of the storm when it came to UFO technology investigations if the program had come to fruition. But why the transparency now? Dr. James Lacatski, formerly a Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) analyst and missile expert, has some insight.

AAWSAP ORIGINS
"It was completely UFO-related," Lacatski said regarding Kona Blue. In 2007, Lacatski became interested in reports of UFO activity at certain hotspots, including a property in northeast Utah known by its nickname Skinwalker Ranch.
Lacatski designed and championed a highly secretive program called the Advanced Aerospace Weapons System Application Program (AAWSAP), an acronym that purposefully omits terms regarding UFOs. He met with Nevada Senator Harry Reid, who, along with two Senate colleagues, secured $22 million in funds. With the contract awarded to a subsidiary of Bigelow Aerospace, AAWSAP became the largest acknowledged UFO investigation in history.

AAWSAP boasted 50 full-time employees, most based in southern Nevada, and created the world's largest UFO data warehouse. It spawned more than 100 technical papers on different aspects of UFO technology and related phenomena. DIA has not released any of those papers.
However, Lacatski, the overall project manager, and his colleague Dr. Colm Kelleher, the onsite manager in Las Vegas, have co-authored two books about AAWSAP, reporting as much as government officials would allow.
In his 2023 book, Lacatski casually revealed that in 2011, he informed a U.S. senator and a high-ranking official that "the United States was in possession of a craft of unknown origin and had successfully gained access to its interior. This craft had.... no intakes, exhaust, wings, or control surfaces ...(no) engine, fuel tanks, or fuel."

In other words, the U.S. had a flying saucer.

Since that revelation, Lacatski has declined to say anything unauthorized by the Pentagon.
"There was more to it, considerably more to that discussion about what the situation was," Lacatski said. "We can't go into that."
However, thanks to a surprise release from the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), the Pentagon's current UFO program, the public is more able to read between the lines. The formerly top-secret document, declassified in February by Homeland Security, describes Kona Blue, a program designed by Lacatski, Kelleher, and other AAWSAP colleagues, as an ambitious plan to study and exploit UFO technology.

Stockholm-based Cevian Capital is making a ?1.2 billion bet on UBS, saying it's confident the bank can successfully integrate Credit Suisse and double its share price over the next two to three years. "We think UBS should at least be valued on a par with Morgan Stanley," Cevian co-founder Lars F?rberg told Bloomberg Television earlier today after his firm announced it has built up a stake of about 1.3% in the Swiss bank. UBS's valuation has trailed that of Wall Street's titans, and Chairman Colm Kelleher has made little secret that he thinks it should be higher-as high, perhaps, as that of Morgan Stanley, where the Irishman spent most of his career. But rivals like Morgan Stanley have much bigger client networks and bigger investment banks to craft whizzy financial products for them, and US banks have historically commanded a valuation premium over their European counterparts. UBS shares rose as much as 2.7% earlier.

Japan's negative rates
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda decided to keep interest rates in negative territory - where the policy rate has been since 2016. Ueda appeared determined to keep his options open at a press briefing: he said there was little data for his team to assess before they next meet to decide on rates in January, but he didn't rule out a hike entirely either. He also said it was too early to give specific details on any exit plans. The yen extended its decline in choppy trading as Ueda spoke, dropping more than 1% against the dollar. The Japanese currency had turned into one of the world's favorite macro trades in recent weeks after a comment from Ueda and one of his deputies sparked speculation of an exit from sub-zero rates as early as this month. The view subsided after people familiar with the matter told my colleagues in Tokyo that the central bank was in no rush - though bets this will happen in 2024 are still very much on.

With rates having come down substantially over the past month and a half, a big question is what it will it mean for housing. According to Freddie Mac, a 30-year fixed rate mortgage is now under 7%.

BlackRock Sells Asset-Backed Bonds From Credit Suisse's Books

Credit Suisse Group AG has hired BlackRock Inc. to help sell a portfolio of structured bonds for the Swiss bank, becoming the latest entity to tap the money manager in a time of crisis.

BlackRock's Financial Markets Advisory group has been selling off securities over the last two weeks, including pieces of collateralized loan obligations, commercial mortgage bonds and niche asset backed debt, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Bonds backed by auto, credit card, student and aircraft loans or leases were also included in the lists of securities put up for sale, which included at least $300 million of bonds, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private transactions.

The sales come weeks after Credit Suisse was sold to UBS Group AG in a state-brokered deal, and just a few months after the Swiss bank's structured team moved over to a new company called Atlas SP Partners, which is backed by Apollo Global Management Inc. The merger will see large parts of Credit Suisse's investment bank wound down in what UBS Chairman Colm Kelleher called a bigger deal to manage than even those during the height of the 2008 financial crisis.

This is BlackRock's second sale process this month in structured bonds, with its Financial Markets Advisory group having also been tapped by the US government to help sell $114 billion of securities amassed from failed lenders Signature Bank and Silicon Valley Bank. Those include agency mortgage backed securities, collateralized mortgage obligations and CMBS. BlackRock has been charged with selling those assets for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., which said the firm would seek a "gradual and orderly" process.

The move follows Credit Suisse's announcement of a "new strategy and transformation plan" in late October, which included job cuts as well as "significant exposure reduction" to securitized products, such as collateralized loan obligations.

The $8.6 trillion asset manager has a history of swooping in to sell old inventory in troubled times. In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, the Federal Reserve and US Department of the Treasury awarded contracts to BlackRock to manage $130 billion of bad debt formerly on the books of Bear Stearns and American International Group Inc. The Fed also turned to BlackRock to help oversee debt-buying programs to help stabilize the economy at the onset of the pandemic in 2020.

Swiss banks announce historic takeover
Banking giant UBS has reached a deal to acquire its ailing rival Credit Suisse

UBS Group and Credit Suisse Group, two of the biggest names in European banking, are coming together in a government-brokered deal aimed at shoring up public confidence in the Western financial system and averting a global crisis.

UBS agreed on Sunday to pay 3 billion Swiss francs ($3.24 billion) in stock to acquire its embattled rival in a takeover underpinned by government guarantees and 100 billion francs in liquidity assistance from Switzerland's central bank. The agreed price of 1 UBS share for each22.48 shares of Credit Suisse values the latter bank at less than half its market closing priceon Friday. The transaction requires UBS to absorb up to $5.4 billion in losses at Credit Suisse.

"I welcome the swift action and the decisions taken by the Swiss authorities," European Central Bank President Christine Legarde saidof the merger. "They are instrumental for restoring orderly market conditions and ensuring financial stability." Although the region's banking sector is "resilient," she added, "our policy toolkit is fully equipped to provide liquidity support to the euro area financial system if needed and to preserve the smooth transmission of monetary policy."

The merger of Switzerland's two biggest Swiss banks is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. Western governments and central banks have sought to prevent a cascade of bank failures after the collapses earlier this month of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in the US.

Credit Suisse last month reported a 2022 net loss of 7.3 billion francs and warned that it would incur another "substantial" loss in 2023 before returning to profitability in 2024. With clients withdrawing their money in droves, Credit Suisse turned to the Swiss central bank for a loan of 50 billion francs last week.

The newly combined bankwill boast more than $5 trillion of invested assets(Not for long). UBS Chairman Colm Kelleher told reporters at a press briefing in Bern, Switzerland, that there are "no options" other than closing the acquisition and making it a success. "This is absolutely essential to the financial structure of Switzerland and... to global finance."
