Eschewing conventions of expert talking heads or definitive narrative, the film unfolds as a somewhat disjointed collage of interviews with previously anonymous, very online people who have gained notoriety for their shitposting, a way of posting online that intentionally derails conversation through irony or lack of context. In the tradition of documentaries about fringy subcultures, Moyer takes a non-judgmental, almost sociological lens, allowing the trolls - white men in their 20s who live mostly in bleak, post-industrial American towns - to speak for themselves.
This decision has made the documentary controversial. By focusing on the trolls' narrative, Moyer has overlooked those who have been harmed by the abuse and hate that has spread on the platforms that they inhabit. This concern is compounded by Cody Wilson's involvement in funding the film. When confronted about taking money from Wilson, as well as gaining access to his sources in the far-right world, Moyer told Rolling Stone: "This film is going to stand the test of time and it's going to help a lot of people. And I will accept money from Cody Wilson for this project, whether I agree with any of his personal decisions or not."
In the film, we meet Sean, who identifies as "five-foot-six and living in a one-bedroom apartment with my mom". The gun-toting brothers Charels and Viddy, who turned to the "constant onslaught of gore and pornography" on the internet at a young age to fill the void left by alcoholic parents. Kyle from El Paso, Texas, who participates in live-action role-playing as a millennial cowboy, gets in fights outside bars, and tweets about it later. And Kantbot, a philosopher-shitposter who is now best known for his appearance in a viral video, filmed at an anti-Trump rally in 2016, in which he declares that Trump will "complete the system of German idealism".
The awkward, depressive, timid presence these young men project on screen is contrasted with screenshots of their online posting, which is irony-laden, macabre, often abusive, and staggeringly misogynistic. (Charels, for instance, "jokes" that he wants to punch a woman in the stomach so hard she stops breathing.)
As the documentary's title suggests, a source of inspiration for their trolling is unsuccessful relationships with women. None of Moyer's subjects, however, identify as "incels", and they carefully differentiate themselves from those who confuse shitposting with real world violence, like Elliot Rodger or Alek Minassian, two young men who acted out their violent fantasies through mass murder. For them, TFW No GF is not a threat, but an emotive motto for a new generation, conveying a fragile emotional state that develops out of loneliness, lack of companionship, and no hope for the future.
On 4chan, the memetic representation of this emotion is not Pepe - who symbolizes the smug, trolling self - but Wojak, a Microsoft Paint illustration of a bald man, who often looks depressed or angry. With his creased, white face and soulless eyes, he is a distinctly uglier character than Pepe, reflecting a broader aesthetic distinction between the two documentaries. Feels Good Man offers a magnificent visual experience, filled with engaging subjects, that ends with redemption: Furie lawyers up and successfully enforces Pepe's copyright, barring Alex Jones, Richard Spencer, and a host of far-right figures from using his frog. In the final scene, we see him swimming in a picturesque rockpool surrounded by friends, finally free from the online spiral into which was pulled.
In contrast, TFW No GF remains dark and dissonant throughout. In the end, the young men are seemingly trying to move on with their lives - Charels has a girlfriend, Sean is lifting weights. But their future in America seems grim and uncertain. Having spent so much time in the darkest corners of the online world in their formative years, it is difficult to imagine them ever escaping back into the "real world", or liberating themselves from psychic consequences of their nihilist shitposting.
In this sense, they, and Moyer's documentary, might offer a more accurate, if terrifying, view of where the culture is heading.

On 13 October 2015, Donald Trump, who had recently announced his run for president, tweeted an image of himself standing at the presidential lectern, his face transmogrified into a green, smug-looking frog, known to certain corners of the internet as Pepe. With hindsight, this strange moment offers a stake in the ground, marking out the point when the meme was invited into mainstream political culture.
This collapse of the virtual and the real seems to have only accelerated since then. Online phenomena are no longer cordoned off in their virtual barriers but regularly pass through the screen to play mischief in the so-called "real world". Two recent documentaries attempt to explain how this all happened - from two very different perspectives.
The first one, Feels Good Man, aims to dissect how the Pepe meme was hijacked by extremist groups to turn the comic character into a symbol of far right bigotry. By comparison the second documentary, TFW No GF, allows a handful of trolls to speak for themselves with little critical pushback. The film was partially funded by Cody Wilson, who was described by the Southern Poverty Law Center as someone who "exists in the world of antigovernment extremists, as a product of a sort of extreme post-libertarianism". In 2017 he launched Hatreon, a site aimed at crowdfunding for white nationalists who had been banned from sites such as Kickstarter and Patreon.
Feels Good Man tracks Pepe's journey to notoriety from the point of view of its creator, Matt Furie, a sweet-tempered, somewhat credulous California-based illustrator. We learn that Furie first created Pepe for his 2005 comic Boy's Club, which tracked the lives of four human-like animal friends living in the languid state between college and adult life. Quintessential 90s slackers, they drink, smoke, fart, and say things like "got milk?" and "as if". The comic is crude, light-hearted, funny, portraying a type of masculinity in which, as one fan of the comic explains, "you can be in your underwear singing Shania Twain".
On a whim, Furie uploads a few frames from the comic to his Myspace page. Soon, a wide array of Pepe memes start to take over. People make their own versions of the frog and post him on obscure forums and bulletin boards, including on 4chan, where Pepe undergoes the first of several major mutations. By 2008, he is no longer Furie's "happy little frog" but a sad, alienated creature, an avatar for disgruntled dropouts who live in their mothers' basements - or in 4chan language, Neets (Not in Education or Training).
As Pepe breaks out on to more mainstream social media platforms, his image changes once again into a more palatable, funny, feminized frog - shared by the likes of Nicki Minaj and Katie Perry. The 4chaners, who feel their mascot is being stolen by "normies", react by metamorphizing Pepe into the most "problematic" creature imaginable. They generate versions of Pepe emblazoned with swastikas, Pepe gassing Jewish people, Pepe in a KKK hood. The idea is that if they make the frog politically incorrect, normies will back off.
The ploy worked, perhaps better than expected. By 2015, Pepe had become a symbol for a broad coalition of self-styled transgressive rightwingers, all the way from anti-PC "activists" to full-blown "alt-right" white nationalists to Donald Trump.
For a long time, Furie remains somewhat nonplussed about Pepe's increasingly toxic online mutations. "I am just a spectator," he tells a friend. It is only when his design is designated as a hate symbol by the Anti-Defamation League in September 2016 that he finally confronts how out of hand his Golem-like creature has become. He teams up with the ADL to launch #SavePepe, inviting people to draw and upload their own, peace-loving version of the frog, to drown out the hate.
Of course, the plan fails. 4chan users continue to post racist and pro-Trump memes by the tens of thousands. When Trump wins the election, 4chaners declare that they memed their candidate all the way to the White House.

That document detailed Wilson's alleged sexual assault against a female "child younger than 17 years of age" whom he reportedly solicited through the website SugarDaddyMeet.com. Last Friday, December 28, the State of Texas finally formally indicted (PDF) Wilson. The 3D printed gun advocate now faces multiple charges: four counts of sexual assault of a child, two charges of indecency with a child by contact, and two charges of indecency with a child by exposure.
These charges are all second-degree felonies punishable by up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.
Wilson's two previously scheduled initial court appearances in November and December had each been pushed back, as often happens in cases still waiting on a formal indictment. This recent filing may make it more likely that the newest tentative date (scheduled for early February) will occur, meaning Wilson's team would need to finally appear at the Travis County Courthouse.
Today, Wilson is a relatively free man at home, out of jail on a $150,000 bond.

3D-printed gun creator jailed in Texas over sexual assault charge
The owner of a company that distributes blueprints to produce 3D-printed guns has been jailed in Houston following accusations of sexual assault involving an underage girl.
Reuters reported that Cody Wilson was booked into Harris County Jail on Sunday after he was arrested in Taiwan on Friday when his U.S. passport was annulled.
According to the news agency, Wilson caught a flight to Taiwan shortly after learning an affidavit was filed in Travis County, Texas, accusing him of paying a girl under the age of 17 $500 after the two had sex.
The 30-year-old founder of Defense Distributed was investigated after a counselor contacted police in August to report the incident, according to the affidavit.
The minor in question was interviewed by police earlier this week and a warrant was issued for Wilson's arrest on Wednesday, according to the news service. But by that point, Wilson had already flown to Taiwan.
At the time, Austin Police Commander Troy Officer told reporters Wilson frequently travels for business but that it was unclear why he went to Taiwan.
Wilson has captured headlines in recent months from the debate over 3D-printed guns.

3-D Gun Printing Pioneer Accused Of Paying For Sex With A Minor
In one of the more bizarre true-crime stories we've heard recently, Cody Wilson, the founder of firearm company Defense Distributed, has been charged with paying a 16-year-old girl for sex, according to Bloomberg. In response to the charges, Wilson has gone on the run in Taiwan. Police believe a friend of the victim called Wilson and tipped him off to the impending charges, prompting him to miss his return flight to the US. Meanwhile, a judge in Travis County Texas has issued a warrant for Wilson's arrest.
Wilson, who has called himself a "crypto-anarchist," was accused of sexually assaulting the unidentified girl after paying her $500 for sex at an area hotel. Police said Wilson met the girl on "SugarDaddyMeet.com" where he bragged to her about his company's high profile

The arm's hand grips a curved sword, with blood dripping from it. The symbol, Wilson explains, once flew on a flag above the Goliad Fort in South Texas. In Texas' revolution against Mexico in the 1830s, Goliad's fort was taken by the Mexican government and became the site of a massacre of 400 American prisoners of war, one that's far less widely remembered than the Alamo.
Wilson recently ordered a full-size flag with the sword-wielding bloody arm. He wants to make it a new symbol for his group. His interest in the icon, he explains, dates back to the 2016 election, when he was convinced Hillary Clinton was set to become the president and lead a massive crackdown on firearms.

Judge blocks release of 3D-printed gun blueprints hours before public launch
A federal judge in Seattle has blocked the release of downloadable plans for 3D-printed guns, hours before a Second Amendment activist was due to release them to the world.
US District Judge Robert Lasnik issued the temporary injunction on Tuesday, after eight Democratic attorneys general filed a lawsuit on Monday.
"These downloadable guns are unregistered and very difficult to detect, even with metal detectors, and will be available to anyone regardless of age, mental health or criminal history," Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson said in a statement. "If the Trump Administration won't keep us safe, we will."
The plans were due to be made public after the federal government reached a settlement with Defense Distributed, a Texas company that hosts and distributes the blueprints from its online depository, DEFCAD. Defense Distributed and DEFCAD are the creation of Cody Wilson, a pro-gun, libertarian activist.
The government had ordered Wilson to take down plans for a 3D-printed handgun in 2013. Wilson complied, but sued the government in 2015 and won the case in late June, with the Justice Department ruling that Americans may "access, discuss, use and reproduce" the plans.
Wilson, a self-described 'crypto-anarchist' hailed the victory as the death of American gun control.
While Judge Lasnik's injunction came just before the official August 1 release date for the plans, Defense Distributed uploaded blueprints for nine types of gun to its website on Friday. The CAD files allowed anyone with the right software and access to a 3D printer to make their own weapons, including an AR-15 style rifle and a single-shot, disposable handgun.
According to Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, 1,000 people had downloaded Defense Distributed's plans for an AR-15 style rifle by Sunday.
With a temporary injunction in place, President Donald Trump tweeted on Tuesday that he was "looking into" 3D printed guns, and consulting with the National Rifle Association on the issue.
How does it work?
During World War II, the US military manufactured the FP-45 Liberator, a single-shot pistol that could be mass-produced from stamped steel at a cost of $2.10 per unit. Dropped behind enemy lines to resistance fighters and partisans, the US intended these fighters to use the gun to kill Nazi occupiers at close range, before retrieving their weapons and carrying on the fight.
Drawing inspiration from this, Wilson posted plans for a 3D-printed 'Liberator' online in 2013. The single-shot, 3D-printed pistol could be manufactured with any commercially available 3D printer. While made entirely from plastic, the addition of a crude metal firing pin turned the Liberator into a viable weapon.
Plans for the liberator were downloaded more than 100,000 times in the two days before the US government ordered Defense Distributed to take them down. The schematics are still widely available on file-sharing sites like The Pirate Bay and on the 'dark web.'
Undetectable plastic guns are illegal in the US, and become unsafe to use after firing a few rounds. To that end, Defense Distributed sells a milling machine called 'Ghost Gunner,' that allows inexperienced hobbyist millwrights to put the finishing touches to an 80 percent complete lower portion of a gun - which due to its unfinished nature can be sold as a lump of metal and not a firearm.
The finished lower is now considered a firearm. However, as it was home-machined from a chunk of unfinished metal, it has no serial number and its user did not have to pass a background check to get it. Making such a weapon for yourself is legal in every state except California, as long as you are not a prohibited person. The same rules apply for less durable 3D printed lowers.
Every other part - upper receiver, stock, grip, barrel, etc. - can either be 3D printed or bought with no restriction, as these parts are not considered firearms by themselves.
Several companies sell their own unfinished lowers and milling kits, and any number of plans for 3D printed parts circulate online. However, the prohibitive cost of 3D printers and high-precision CNC milling machines has thus far relegated homemade firearms to a small fringe of enthusiasts.
Wilson has stated that he wants to make untraceable 'ghost guns' accessible to the masses. His court victory and the backlash from legislators is the most high-profile case so far in what he calls "the age of the downloadable gun," and has thrust the concept out of hobbyists' workshops and into the mainstream.

Joining the suit were Democratic attorneys general in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Maryland, New York and the District of Columbia. Separately, attorneys general in 21 states urged Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Monday to withdraw from the settlement with Defense Distributed, saying it "creates an imminent risk to public safety."
People can use the blueprints to manufacture a plastic gun using a 3D printer. But gun industry experts have expressed doubt that criminals would go to the trouble, since the printers needed to make the guns are very expensive, the guns themselves tend to disintegrate quickly and traditional firearms are easy to come by.
Cody Wilson, the founder of Defense Distributed, first published downloadable designs for a 3D-printed firearm in 2013. It was downloaded about 100,000 times until the State Department ordered him to cease, contending it violated federal export laws since some of the blueprints were downloaded by people outside the United States.
The State Department reversed course in late June, agreeing to allow Wilson to resume posting the blueprints. The files were published on Friday.
The company filed its own suit in Texas on Sunday, asserting that it's the victim of an "ideologically-fueled program of intimidation and harassment" that violates the company's First Amendment rights.
The company's attorney, Josh Blackman, called it an "easy case."
States are free to enact gun control measures, but "what they can't do is censor the speech of another citizen in another state, and they can't regulate the commerce of another citizen in another state when that commerce is authorized by a federal government license," Blackman said in an interview Monday. "It's a violation of the First Amendment, it's unconscionable and we're going to fight it to the very end."
Defense Distributed agreed to temporarily block Pennsylvania residents from downloading the plans after state officials went to federal court in Philadelphia on Sunday seeking an emergency order. The company said it has also blocked access to users in New Jersey and Los Angeles.
