The Polish president was at risk of being stranded in the US due to a problem with his Boeing plane
Andrzej Duda's presidential jet was unable to depart from the United States due to a technical issue, according to media reports.
The incident forced Duda to use a backup plane, which he took to Brussels for a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.
SYDNEY, March 5 (Reuters) - New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on Tuesday was forced to fly on a commercial flight to attend an ASEAN summit in Australia after a technical snag hit his military aircraft, with local media reporting the delay may impact his meetings.

Israeli Forces Storm Southern Gaza Hospital In Search Of Hostage Remains
Civilians have been trickling out of Gaza's southern city of Rafah, regional media has observed, as Israel's major ground assault looms, also as the city and its environs have already come under intensified shelling, air strikes, and sporadic infantry raids on some areas.
Prime Minister Netanyahu has deflected calls to halt the impending military operation by saying he's ordered the army to draw up plans to evacuate the city of its civilians prior to the invasion. While Israeli leaders say it is Hamas' "last bastion" - it has also been last bastion of safe refuge for the internally displaced of the Strip, swelling to six times the population compared to before Oct.7, according to the UN.
Currently there's an estimated 1.5 million people in Rafah, and critics of Israel's plan has said any forced displacement could be seen as part of an ongoing ethnic cleansing campaign. Earlier in the week UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said it would not participate in such a plan.
"We have not received any official communication from Israeli officials," Jens Laerke, spokesperson for OCHA said Tuesday. "Regardless, the UN does not participate in forced, non-voluntary evacuations. There is no plan at this time to facilitate the evacuation of civilians," he said.
International pressure has only grown, with Australia, Canada and New Zealand issuing a joint statement Thursday urging "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" and saying an assault will have a "devastating" impact on the civilian population. "There is simply nowhere else for civilians to go," the readout signed by prime ministers Anthony Albanese, Justin Trudeau and Christopher Luxon said. It stressed Israel "must listen to its friends."
Spain and Ireland also issued a letter, calling Israel's attack on Rafah "a grave and imminent threat that the international community must urgently confront."
And British Foreign Secretary David Cameron weighed in, saying Israel should "stop and think seriously" before initiating a ground invasion. He asked whether he thinks Israel has broken international law and is committing war crimes. "We think it is impossible to see how you can fight a war amongst these people. There's nowhere for them to go," Cameron responded.
At the moment, Israeli ground forces are concentrated on a controversial mission in Khan Yunis where they've breached Nasser Hospital in an operation aimed at hostage recovery. IDF Spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari stated Thursday, "Sadly, we know that some hostages are no longer alive. We are committed to finding and returning the bodies of those hostages in Gaza."

Relations between M?ori and NZ government deteriorate as details of controversial bill leak
New Zealand once enjoyed a favourable reputation on race relations, but fewer than 100 days into the new government, M?ori leaders have slammed its agenda as a "white supremacist approach".
That strong language is coming from a co-leader of The M?ori Party, but Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is facing criticism from several sources as well as mounting legal challenges.
In the space of a week, a legal document leaked from the Ministry of Justice has shed some light on a controversial bill being drafted that aims to rewrite the principles of New Zealand's founding document - the Treaty of Waitangi.
And the M?ori King, Te Arikinui T?heitia Paki, held the first national hui - or meeting of M?ori - in a decade to discuss the government's agenda.
While 3,000 people were expected to attend the hui, more than 10,000 showed up.
Then, on Wednesday, a senior M?ori leader issued a warning: "If there is any measure of meddling with Te Tiriti o Waitangi, M?ori will not sit idly by."
This is all against a backdrop of protests and legal challenges as M?ori organisations try to halt some of the government's policy changes that they say will disproportionately impact New Zealand's first people.
Co-leader of Te Pati M?ori (The M?ori Party) Debbie Ngarewa-Packer told the ABC that M?ori leaders will "continue to grow the resistance".
"I think it's a humiliating state for this government to be in when the rest of the world can see that there are strong accusations coming from M?ori," she said.
"They are being called an anti-M?ori government, they're being called out as practising white supremacy in how they're trying to diminish our M?ori language, how they're trying to diminish initiatives that help us to stay alive."
Mr Luxon denied that characterisation.
"I outright reject it and I think it's entirely inappropriate. I think it's very offensive and I think it's very divisive and very unhelpful," he told a press conference on Tuesday.

UN General Assembly passes resolution calling for ceasefire in Gaza, Australia votes in favour but US and Israel go against the motion
The United Nations has called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, with 153 votes in favour of the resolution.
The United Nations has called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza on Tuesday, with more than 153 members voting in favour of the resolution, 10 voting against and 23 abstaining.
Australia was among those who voted in favour.
Among the countries that voted against included the United States, Israel and Austria. The United Kingdom voted to abstain.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has also called for a "sustainable ceasefire" in Gaza in a joint statement on Wednesday with the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
"Australia, Canada, and New Zealand mourn every Israeli and Palestinian innocent life which has been lost in this conflict and express our condolences to all families and communities affected by the violence," the statement read.
"We unequivocally condemn Hamas' terror attacks on Israel on October 7, the appalling loss of life, and the heinous acts of violence perpetrated in those attacks, including sexual violence. We condemn Hamas' unacceptable treatment of hostages and call for the immediate and unconditional release of all remaining hostages.
"We recognise Israel's right to exist and right to defend itself. In defending itself, Israel must respect international humanitarian law. Civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected. We are alarmed at the diminishing safe space for civilians in Gaza. The price of defeating Hamas cannot be the continuous suffering of all Palestinian civilians.
"We support Palestinians' right to self-determination. We oppose the forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, the re-occupation of Gaza, any reduction in territory, and any use of siege or blockade. We emphasize that Gaza must no longer be used as a platform for terrorism. We reaffirm that settlements are illegal under international law. Settlements and settler violence are serious obstacles to a negotiated two-state solution."
In the statement, the three leaders said they "condemn rising antisemitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Arab sentiment" in their respective countries and around the world.
The leaders also called for Hamas to release all hostages and to "stop using Palestinian civilians as human shields, and lay down its arms".

NZ Politician Calls for Full-Blown Criminal Investigation into COVID Vaccine Deaths
"The government knew every side effect before one single jab was given in New Zealand."
A major political shift has occurred in New Zealand after six years of Jacinda Ardern's liberal rule. Former Prime Minister Ardern, who unexpectedly announced she no longer had "enough in the tank" to fulfill the position in January 2023, passed the torch to Chris Hipkins, who suffered a crushing defeat in the 2023 New Zealand general election to conservative Christopher Luxon on October 14, 2023.
With the election in the rear-view mirror, NZ Loyal Party leader Liz Gunn issued a post-election update Friday, October 21, with "The Mother of all Revelations."
Before the election, Gunn was contacted by a clinician/mathematician whistleblower who had information linking tens of thousands of Kiwi (NZ citizens) deaths to the COVID-19 injections. This unnamed whistleblower insisted that his or her words would be published "after the election."
We have now come to an undisclosed location with a New Zealand clinician/mathematician, who is very experienced in statistical analysis. That person has with us reviewed the data and confirms our position that it is damning. The figures show that there are tens of thousands of deaths linked to the [COVID] jabs, and this is just one of the sites recording this type of information in New Zealand. We don't know how many further databases like this are in the country. So it follows that as the deaths are usually less than the numbers of side effects, then the extrapolation of the numbers of injured and dead kiwis starts to become frankly eyewatering.
We saw in the data that there are many clusters of deaths. People who attended the same jab site and were jabbed one after the other at consecutive times on the same day. We saw their jab date. We saw their date of death. Let me give you just one of many examples.
On one day, 30 people were jabbed on the same day at the same location. All are now deceased, and their deaths are in close temporal time proximity to each other. That's 30. That's all players in a rugby match on the field suddenly dead. You see, statistically, the numbers of deaths we saw cannot be attributed to natural causes, given same site and same date of vaccination. It would be what they say statistically highly unlikely.
We are calling for an inquiry. Not just any inquiry, a full-blown criminal investigation leaving no stone unturned. New Zealand is a crime scene. Computers of anyone associated with this COVID response rollout in any capacity, mobile phones, communications, bank accounts, archives, and a whole host of other targeted information must be seized.

New Zealand abandons Labour and shifts
to the right as country votes for wholesale change

New Zealand voters have delivered a forceful rejection of the Labour government as a surge in support for the National party delivered what analysts described as a "bloodbath" for the government and a new right-leaning era for politics in the country. The result marked a dramatic change in fortunes for the Labour party, which three years earlier - led by Jacinda Ardern - secured a historic mandate, but saw its support dwindle in the face of rising living costs and the Covid pandemic. Speaking to a large crowd of party-faithful at his election night event in Auckland, National party leader Christopher Luxon said his party was on course to form

New Zealand's National Party to lead new government as Labour concedes
By Lucy Craymer
WELLINGTON (Reuters via PiQSuite.com) -New Zealand's centre-right National Party led by Christopher Luxon will form a new government with its preferred coalition party ACT, after Labour leader Chris Hipkins conceded he could not form a government following the country's general election.
The National Party, now in opposition, had 40% of the votes while the ACT party had 9%, which based on the current tally would give the two parties enough seats to form a government, according to the Electoral Commission.

New Zealand to end quarantine stays and reopen its borders
New Zealand's government on Thursday said it will end its quarantine requirements for incoming travelers and reopen its borders, a change welcomed by thousands of citizens abroad who have endured long waits to return home.
Since the start of the pandemic, New Zealand has enacted some of the world's strictest border controls. Most incoming travelers need to spend 10 days in a quarantine hotel room run by the military, a requirement that has created a bottleneck at the border.
The measures were initially credited with saving thousands of lives and allowed New Zealand to eliminate or control several outbreaks of the coronavirus.
But, increasingly, the border controls have been viewed as out-of-step in a world where the virus is becoming endemic, and in a country where the omicron variant is already spreading. The bottleneck forced many New Zealanders abroad to enter a lottery-style system to try and secure a spot in quarantine and passage home.
The shortcomings of the system were highlighted over the past week by pregnant New Zealand journalist Charlotte Bellis, who was stranded in Afghanistan after New Zealand officials initially rejected her application to return home to give birth. After international publicity, officials backed down and offered her a spot in quarantine, which she has accepted.
The border changes mean that vaccinated New Zealanders returning from Australia will no longer need to go into quarantine from the end of this month, and vaccinated New Zealanders returning from the rest of the world can skip quarantine by mid-March. They will still be required to isolate at home.
However, most tourists will need to wait until October before they can enter the country without a quarantine stay. And anybody who isn't vaccinated will still be required to go through quarantine.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she knows many people associate the border controls with heartache but they have undeniably saved lives.
"There is no question that for New Zealand, it has been one of the hardest parts of the pandemic," she said. "But the reason that it is right up there as one of the toughest things we have experienced is, in part, because large-scale loss of life is not."
She said the controls "meant not everyone could come home when they wanted to. But it also meant that COVID could not come in when it wanted to, either."
Ardern said the restrictions had allowed New Zealand to build its defenses against the virus by achieving high levels of vaccination while also keeping the economy running strongly.
About 77% of New Zealanders are fully vaccinated, according to Our World in Data. That rises to 93% among those aged 12 and over, according to health officials.
New Zealand has reported just 53 virus deaths among its population of 5 million.
New Zealand's economy did return to growth quickly after a pandemic dip, and unemployment decreased to 3.2% in the latest quarter, the lowest level since record-keeping began in 1986. But the government has also increased borrowing sharply and home prices have skyrocketed.
Opposition leader Christopher Luxon said the reopening of the border was welcome news, and his National Party had long called for the government to "end the lottery of human misery."
Ardern said it was a first step toward normality.
"There was life before, and now life with COVID, but that also means there will be life after COVID too, a life where we have adapted, where we have some normality back, and where the weather can once again take its rightful place as our primary topic of conversation," Ardern said. "We are well on our way to reaching that destination. We're just not quite there yet."

Air New Zealand's first Airbus A321 NEO prepares for take-off
https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/travel/2018/09/air-new-zealand-s-first-airbus-a321-neo-prepares-for-take-off.html
Air New Zealand's newest aircraft is in the final stages of preparation before it joins the airline's fleet in November.
Tickets for the first flight on the new Airbus A321 'NEO' - which stands for new engine option - have gone on sale today.
Its arrival will be the first of 13 new Airbus aircraft entering Air NZ's fleet over the next few years.
The airline has placed an order worth $2.8 billion with Airbus for a mixture of A321 NEOs and A320 NEOs.
The A321 can carry 214 passengers - 46 more than the airline's current A320 fleet.
Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Christopher Luxon says the aircraft's arrival marks the beginning of a new strategy for the airline's short haul operations.

"There are lots of things that we have suggested he do, and we expect him to have a 'full time' when he is out here."
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern welcomed confirmation of the trip.
"I look forward to welcoming Mr Obama to our country and anticipate meeting him once his full programme is finalised," she said in a statement.
Obama's speech to the NZ-US Council has been sponsored by Air New Zealand, Westpac and Mastercard.
Grice said the guest list had yet to be confirmed and the council would not be selling tickets.
"The three sponsors have put forward some names and we are making sure it is a full cross-section of New Zealand society from community leaders to youth leaders and businesspeople."
Air NZ chief executive Christopher Luxon said the airline had wanted to enable a visit since Obama left office and thought it would be an inspiration for the country's "leaders of today and tomorrow".
"It goes without saying that President Obama's presence in New Zealand will be a boost for the profile of our tourism industry globally," he said.
Westpac NZ chief executive David McLean said Obama's tenure in the White House brought with it "a spirit of hope and change which resonated with many New Zealanders".
Grice said Obama was likely to discuss his presidency during his speech to the NZ-US Council and issues such as diversity and youth leadership "which is a really important thing in his post-presidency".
Obama will speak at an event in Sydney the following day."

Anyone find it odd both Hillary and Obama planning to go to NZ where they are welcomed and no extradition treaties. Also Australian Prime Minister was talking with Trump this week. Coincidence that Hussein is going there on a trip next?? Why does Obama keep going to countries after they meet with Trump?

China warns New Zealand about joining 'dangerous' AUKUS
WILL GLASGOW - FEBRUARY 2, 2024
Beijing has warned New Zealand against going down the "dangerous path" of joining AUKUS after Defence Minister Richard Marles said an Australian delegation would "very shortly" travel to Wellington to brief officials on the defence technology pact.
The episode marks the first public criticisms made by Beijing about New Zealand since Christopher Luxon's National Party formed a coalition government in November. It comes after a joint meeting in Melbourne on Thursday of Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Mr Marles with their New Zealand counterparts Foreign Minister Winston Peters and Defence Minister Judith Collins, which was focused on co-ordinating approaches to foreign policy, security and defence.
Hours after the meeting, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin urged New Zealand to avoid the "Cold War mentality" of the AUKUS partners, Australia, the US and the UK, which he said were engaged in an "arms race".
"The three countries, for their own geopolitical interests, have totally disregarded the concerns of the international community and gone further down the wrong and dangerous path," Mr Wang said.
China's diplomats in Wellington joined in on Friday morning, bristling at "irresponsible remarks" in the joint New Zealand-Australian statement about human rights abuses in Xinjiang, the erosion of religious freedom in Tibet, the snuffing of democratic processes in Hong Kong and threats to Taiwan.
"China expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to this. Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other affairs are China's internal affairs, involve China's core interests, and do not allow any external force to interfere," a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Wellington said.
Beijing's party state media also joined the chorus of warnings, with the China Daily noting Wellington's stand on AUKUS had changed since "a coalition of right-wing parties" replaced Jacinda Ardern's Labour government.
The China Daily warned that joining AUKUS "would no doubt cast a shadow on bilateral ties".
David Capie, the director of the Centre for Strategic Studies at Wellington's Victoria University, said the language used in the Thursday joint statement to ?describe AUKUS and the Quad - two groups that Beijing has long denounced as efforts to contain China - was "warmer" than that used by New Zealand's previous Labour government.
Professor Capie said language about China's challenging behaviour in the Indo-Pacific was also more direct, making it harder for Beijing to try to "wedge the transTasman relationship", a strategy it has employed for years.
Speaking after Thursday's ?inaugural "2+2" Australia and New Zealand foreign and defence ministers' meeting, Mr Marles said a delegation would travel to New Zealand "very shortly" to brief officials on pillar two of AUKUS, which covers the sharing of advanced military technologies.
But he said the three AUKUS partners wanted to see "runs on the board" before other members joined. "In the longer term, we're open to the idea of pillar two being open to other countries who may be interested," he said.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese holds first official meeting with New Zealand counterpart Christopher Luxon
Tom Crowley - 20 December 2023
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has met with newly elected New Zealand PM Christopher Luxon in Sydney today.
It is the first in-person meeting between the leaders since Mr Luxon was sworn in last month.
The pair discussed Mr Luxon's interest in exploring opportunities to participate in technology sharing under the AUKUS partnership between Australia, the UK and the US.
Mr Albanese said he was supportive of opportunities for greater co-operation between the two countries' defence forces.
The two leaders spoke warmly of their relationship, with Mr Albanese noting they had known each other for "a very long period of time", dating back to Mr Luxon's tenure as the chief executive of Air New Zealand, which overlapped with Mr Albanese's period as transport minister.
Mr Luxon thanked Mr Albanese for his recent decision to make it easier for New Zealanders to gain Australian citizenship.
"Just putting it out there, I think they're probably your best migrants," Mr Luxon said.
Mr Luxon, who leads the conservative National Party, became prime minister after weeks of negotiations with minor parties, resulting in a coalition with the ACT Party and the NZ First.
His first actions in the job included disbanding the Maori Health Service, reducing the use of Maori language in the public service, and announcing plans to repeal legislation to outlaw tobacco smoking.
Those decisions prompted accusations from Maori Party co-leader Hauauru Debbie Ngarewa-Packer that the government had deteriorated race relations to their worst level "since the earliest stages of colonisation".
Asked about those comments today, Mr Luxon said his government had a "difference of opinion" with the Maori Party and did not believe a separate health authority would deliver good outcomes.
Mr Albanese said he had "no intention of commenting on domestic New Zealand politics", but re-affirmed his own government's commitment to closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
Last week, Mr Albanese and Mr Luxon joined with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to call for "urgent international efforts towards a sustainable ceasefire" in Gaza.

>>19728896 ASIO war-of-words violence warning over Israel - The nation's top domestic security agency has warned of the potential for "opportunistic violence" in Australia following Hamas's terrorist attack on Israel, calling on "all parties" to refrain from stoking division amid fears domestic extremists could take advantage of community unrest. As pro-Palestinian groups plan further rallies in coming days, ASIO head Mike Burgess said he had not lifted the national terrorism threat level, but the agency was on alert for indications of planned violence. "I remain concerned about the potential for opportunistic violence with little or no warning," the ASIO director-general said. Mr Burgess said the potential for such violence was distinct from planned attacks, declaring ASIO was well placed to detect threats to security from politically motivated and communal violence. "In this context, it is important that all parties consider the ?implications for social cohesion when making public statements," he said. "As I have said previously, words matter. ASIO has seen ?direct connections between ?inflamed language and inflamed community tensions."
>>19728938 ASIO boss's call for calm risks stirring the political pot - "ASIO has made an extraordinary intervention into what is an extraordinary situation evolving in Australia. On the surface, it reflects concerns that another tipping point in the nation's social cohesion may be approaching. While it is rare for a director-general of security to so overtly step into the political arena, Mike Burgess clearly feels that he has been forced to do so. Presumably, the intelligence agency is picking up some disturbing chatter. Burgess's intervention, however, has had immediate repercussions. Burgess said "all parties" needed to consider the implications for social cohesion when speaking publicly. While he is concerned about the security environment, he has inadvertently added to a volatile political environment. Some may argue that it is not ASIO's role to be venturing into this debate publicly. And there are valid reasons why. The Albanese government has been quick to seize on Burgess's warning, backgrounding media that the spy boss's comments directly contradicted Peter Dutton's calls for non-citizen hate-preachers to be deported. Burgess has now found himself being verballed by the government when his aim was to point out the escalating implications for the more obvious forms of inflammatory language. When you have protesters chanting "gas the Jews", you know you have a serious problem from a security perspective." - Simon Benson - theaustralian.com.au
>>19728966 Football Australia say they 'align' with the Football Association and don't want Wembley arch lit up to support Israel during the friendly with England - A Socceroos friendly match against England early tomorrow morning has been mired in controversy after the Football Association has decided not to light up the Wembley arch in the colours of Israel. One of the reasons given by the Football Association was that it didn't want to inflame any tensions ahead of Australia's world cup qualifier against Palestine on November 21. Instead players will respect a minute's silence and wear black armbands. Football Australia told The Australian it had been consulted by the FA on their proposed plans and public statement and added "which we are aligned on". The FA has refused to criticise or condemn the Hamas atrocities, describing mass slaughter of some of the most vulnerable as "ongoing conflict", riling Jewish communities in the United Kingdom.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Tony Cooke said more than 6000 people gathered at the Sydney event. Victoria Police said 10,000 people marched in Melbourne, with no arrests. In Adelaide, a pro-Palestinian rally gathered in front of the State Parliament building. Police escorted the crowd from North Terrace to Victoria square in Adelaide's CBD. South Australia Police said the crowd behaved in a "safe, orderly and lawful manner."

NZ election: Christopher Luxon to boost Australian alliance, defence
MATTHEW HOOTON - OCTOBER 16, 2023
Incoming Kiwi prime minister Christopher Luxon will boost New Zealand's defence spending and alliance with Australia, accelerate its return to the Five Eyes fold, and prioritise its trade relationship with India to reduce its economic reliance on China.
Not for two weeks will Kiwis know exactly which parties will be part of Luxon's government.
It will be led by his centre-right National Party, which won 39 per cent of the party vote in Saturday's preliminary count, giving it 50 seats in a 122-seat House of Representatives.
But, to govern, Luxon is expected to need both David Seymour's right-wing, free-market, cosmopolitan Act Party, which won 9 per cent of the vote on Saturday, and Winston Peters' nationalist, mercantilist and mainly provincial NZ First Party, which won 6.6 per cent.
Final results will be announced on November 3, after overseas, out-of-electorate and late-enrolment votes are counted. National usually loses two seats in the final count, although will pick up an extra seat when a by-election is held in one of its safest seats on November 25.
Only then will Luxon, Seymour and Peters know what cards they can play.
All three parties Luxon is expected to need to govern strongly support New Zealand's traditional defence relationships, even more so than the outgoing Labour government.
If anything, Luxon's National is the most pro-China of New Zealand's mainstream parties. Former leader John Key kept in contact with President Xi Jinping after stepping down as PM in 2016 and plays a role similar to former PM Paul Keating in Australia as one of Beijing's biggest fans. Other senior National figures have extensive business interests in China.
In contrast, the ACT party adamantly opposes China's ambitions in the Pacific and unequivocally backs the Western defence network. In its alternative budget in July, which promised to slash most areas of government expenditure, ACT budgeted to increase defence spending to 1.5 per cent of GDP over four years and 2 per cent by 2030, belatedly bringing New Zealand into line with Australia's investment and the NATO benchmark. NZ First is even more suspicious of Beijing, with Peters leading the tilt to the US as Jacinda Ardern's first foreign minister.
Luxon promises a strong, combat-ready, interoperable military able to defend New Zealand and Australia, and fulfil Wellington's global security responsibilities.
Labour's last-minute bone to far-left activists of promising to recognise the Canberra-based "ambassador" of the Palestinian Authority is now unthinkable. New Zealand will more reliably support Israel and it right to self-defence than either Key or the outgoing Labour government.
On India, Luxon's interest is naive, underlining his being in politics for just three years. He promises to sign a free-trade agreement with New Delhi in his first term, despite milk powder, beef and other meat not being much welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu-nationalist government.
Still, prioritising India should help expand New Zealand's strategic and economic relationship with China's South Asian rival, as envisaged by the US's Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity, putting further distance between Wellington and Beijing.
Like Key, Luxon promised to improve productivity and incomes to reduce Kiwis' incentive to make use of "free trade in labour" with Australia, although no meaningful policy program was offered about how. Tax cuts will go ahead from July 1, but not those Luxon promised in August, which were slammed by everyone except him as poorly thought through, unaffordable and inflationary.
Labour left New Zealand with massive debt, embedded inflation, high interest rates, falling real incomes and what looks worryingly like a structural fiscal deficit. Combined with responding to the dangerous geopolitical situation, restoring basic macroeconomic discipline will be quite enough for Luxon, Seymour and Peters to get on with.
Matthew Hooton is a New Zealand political commentator who has previously worked for the National and ACT parties, and the Auckland Mayor.

New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern to resign
Matthew Knott - January 19, 2023
Jacinda Ardern has stunned New Zealanders by announcing she will step down as the nation's prime minister within weeks and will not contest the upcoming election.
An emotional Ardern revealed the next general election will be held on Saturday, October 14, with a new Labour leader at the helm.
Ardern said she had taken time to consider her future over the summer break and decided it was time for her to move on after more than five years as the nation's leader.
She said she would resign as prime minister by February 7 to give her successor time to settle in the party leader role before the election.
"I have given my absolute all to being prime minister but it has also taken a lot out of me," she said.
"You cannot and should not do the job unless you have a full tank, plus a bit in reserve for those unplanned and unexpected challenges that inevitably come along.
"Having reflected over summer I know I no longer have that bit extra in the tank to do the job justice. It's that simple."
Choking back tears, Ardern said she would have done a disservice to New Zealanders if she continued in the job.
"I'm a politician who is first and foremost human".
Ardern addressed her fianc? Clarke Gayford, who sat in on her press conference, and her four-year-old daughter Neve.
"Neve, mum is looking forward to being there when you start school this year," she said.
"And to Clarke - let's finally get married."
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who had a close relationship with Ardern, paid tribute to her leadership, saying: "Jacinda Ardern has shown the world how to lead with intellect and strength.
"She has demonstrated that empathy and insight are powerful leadership qualities".
Albanese described Ardern, 42, as a "fierce advocate for New Zealand" and a "great friend" to him.
Ardern became the world's youngest head of government in 2017, at age 37, in a left-wing minority government with the support of the Green Party.
A year later she became just the second elected head of government to give birth while in office.
Ardern became a hero to progressives - especially progressive women - around the world with her style of leadership, which presented a stark contrast to the rise of populist conservative leaders such as Donald Trump in the United States and Boris Johnson in the United Kingdom.
She led her party to a landslide victory in the 2020 election, capitalising on her success in making New Zealand one of the countries with the world's lowest COVID-19 death rates.
Ardern's polling numbers had sunk to some of their lowest levels over recent months, with Labour trailing the centre-right National party.
Speaking from the Labour Party caucus retreat in Napier, she said she "needed to let someone else take on this job" and still believed the party would win the upcoming election.
Ardern revealed that Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson would not be entering the leadership contest.
Earlier in the day, across town, National Party leader Christopher Luxon revealed a reshuffle.
Ardern will remain the electorate MP for Mount Albert until April, Stuff reported.
"This will give me a bit of time in the electorate before I depart, and also spare them and the country a by-election," she told reporters.
"Beyond that, I have no plan, no next steps. All I know is that whatever I do, I will try and find ways to keep working for New Zealand and that I am looking forward to spending time with my family again - arguably, they are the ones that have sacrificed the most out of all of us."

Potentially there'll be a new option to vote for shortly. News this morning that Christopher Luxon has resigned as CEO of AirNZ and is looking to get into politics for the National Party. He definitely needs some digging into to find out moar! Would be nice if he was NZs Trump.

==New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern to resign==
Jacinda Ardern has announced she will resign as New Zealand prime minister no later than February 7.
She also announced that the general election will be held on Saturday October 14.
The leader said she took time to re-evaluate her future over the summer period and came to the decision.
"I decided to give myself a chance to really reflect if I had what was needed... I'd be doing a disservice to New Zealand if I continued," she said.
Ardern choked back tears saying she did not have the energy to seek re-election.
"I know what this job takes. And I know that I no longer have enough in the tank to do it justice," she said later adding "I'm a politician who is first and foremost human".
Ardern was speaking from the Labour Party caucus retreat in Napier. She said her colleagues, to whom she spoke on Wednesday night, weren't surprised.
She said she "needed to let someone else take on this job" and still believed the party would win the upcoming election.
Earlier in the day, across town, National Party leader Christopher Luxon revealed a reshuffle.
