Truss Govt Pressures Pro-Brexit British Unionists in Northern Ireland to Accept EU Sell-Out
The Conservative Party-led British government is pressuring pro-Brexit, pro-British unionists in Northern Ireland to accept their ongoing sell-out to the European Union and form a regional government or face consequences.
Northern Ireland, sometimes referred to as Ulster, particularly by British Unionists in the Province, was left effectively still inside the European Union, at least for the purposes of customs and regulations, and even subject to an internal border between it and the Great British mainland in the Brexit deal agreed by Boris Johnson.
The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which is the largest of the pro-British parties in Northern Ireland, fiercely opposed this as undermining their place in the United Kingdom, and ultimately refused to continue participating in the power-sharing government with pro-EU, Irish nationalist party Sinn F?in when London failed to rectify the situation - meaning no regional government at all.
Chris Heaton-Harris, the Liz Truss government's Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, has now warned the DUP that if they do not form a regional government with Sinn F?in - something they have vowed they will not do until the so-called Northern Ireland Protocol is reformed - he will have a "legal obligation" to call another regional election, which may prove difficult for the DUP now the nationalist-leaning Catholic community outnumbers the unionist-leaning Protestant community for the first time.
"I'll have to call an election on the 28th of October if there is no executive. That is just a fact," he said, per POLITICO.
Prime Minister Liz Truss, though she campaigned energetically for the Remain in the European Union campaign in 2016, claims she has embraced Brexit and was pro-Brexit Conservative politicians' candidate of choice for party leader in the race to replace Boris Johnson.
For all her supposed convert's zeal, however, there appears little prospect that she will stand up to the EU on Northern Ireland imminently, despite evidence of significant disruption to GB-NI trade as a result of the way the Northern Ireland Protocol is being applied, with customs checks allegedly being carried out with disproportionate vigour by officials.
Indeed, demands from the DUP that the Protocol be unilaterally abolished or reformed, threatened by the British government in the face of EU intransigence for approaching two years, are unlikely to be lead to any action for at least another six months, with that being the latest deadline Truss has set for a compromise with Brussels to be reached.

Lawmaker arrested amid rape allegations
A Tory member of the British Parliament has been arrested, but will not be suspended from the party
(WTH is wrong with the British and Aussies? They have a lot of politicians that are perverts)
A British politician is under arrest and accused of numerous sexual offenses. Police arrested theConservative Partylawmaker on Tuesday after a two-year probe, The Sun newspaper reported without identifying the suspect.
All that is known at this point is that the suspect is a serving member of Parliament, who is alleged to have committed numerous offenses in London between 2002 and 2009.
The charges include "indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of position of trust and misconduct in a public office," according to a Metropolitan Police statement.
The alleged rapist has been "asked" not to attend Parliament while the investigation is ongoing, said a spokesman for Chief Whip Chris Heaton-Harris. However, he will not be suspended from the Conservative Party.
The suspect remains in police custody as Scotland Yard's Central Specialist Crime unit continues its investigation.
Multiple MPs from the UK's ruling party have recently faced allegations of sexual misconduct. Last month, the Conservatives suspended MP David Warburton following revelations of alleged sexual misconduct and cocaine abuse, which he denied.
Meanwhile,Tory MP Imran Ahmad Khanresigned from Parliament in disgrace after he was convicted on charges of sexually assaulting a 15-year old boy in 2008.

Tory MP arrested on suspicion of rape and misconduct spanning seven years
The unnamed MP remains in custody and has been warned by whips to stay away from the Parliamentary estate after the arrest by the Met Police over alleged offences spanning seven years
A Tory MP has been arrested on suspicion of rape and sexual offences spanning seven years.
The unnamed politician remains in custody relating to allegations of sexual offences between 2002 and 2009, Scotland Yard has confirmed.
The MP has been asked not to attend Parliament while the police probe is ongoing by Tory chief whip Chris Heaton Harris.
It is understood the Conservatives will not make a decision on whether the suspect has the whip suspended until after the investigation is concluded.
The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: "In January 2020, the Met received a report relating to alleged sexual offences having been committed between 2002 and 2009.
"The offences are alleged to have occurred in London.
"An investigation is ongoing, led by officers from Central Specialist Crime."
Scotland Yard added the man "was arrested on suspicion of indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of position of trust and misconduct in public office. He remains in custody."
A Conservative whips office spokesperson said: "The Chief Whip has asked that the MP concerned does not attend the Parliamentary Estate while an investigation is ongoing.
"Until the conclusion of the investigation we will not be commenting further."
The allegations emerged after a fresh wave of recriminations about allegations of abuse in Westminster.
Tory MP Imran Ahmad Khan finally quit earlier this month after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy in 2008.
His departure triggers a by-election next month in his Wakefield seat.
Some 56 MPs have reportedly been referred to Parliament's Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (ICGS) over about 70 separate complaints, according to the Sunday Times.

Conservative MP Accused of Watching Porn in Parliament Chamber Named as Neil Parish
A Member of Parliament accused of watching pornography inside the Westminster Parliament Commons' chamber has been named, ending days of speculation on the matter after claims emerged earlier this week.
Neil Parish, who represents the rural Tiverton and Honiton constituency and is himself a farmer, has been kicked out of the Conservative party after being named as the Member of Parliament accused of watching pornography during a House of Commons debate.
Parish has, in the parlance of Parliament, had the 'whip suspended', meaning he has been temporarily suspended from the governing Conservative's parliamentary grouping. Depending on the outcome of an investigation he could be re-instated at a later date, decide to continue sitting as an independent member of parliament, or resign his seat. In some circumstances, the Parliamentary standards commissioner could expel Parish from Parliament, or his constituents could trigger a recall petition.
A spokesman for the Government's chief whip Chris Heaton-Harris - the office responsible for discipline among party members in Parliament - said, per a report from The Daily Telegraph: "Having spoken to the Chief Whip this afternoon, Neil Parish MP is reporting himself to the Standards Committee of the House of Commons. Mr Parish has been suspended from the Conservative whip pending the outcome of that investigation."
Earlier this week, it was reported two female Members of Parliament had reported a man for watching pornography in the Commons debating chamber. Opposition parties have called on Parish to resign since his name was revealed and have accused the government of attempting to cover up his identity. Prime Minister Boris Johnson had said the act was "obviously unacceptable" earlier this week.

Tory frontbencher 'caught watching porn in House of Commons' as chief whip investigates
Colleague says behaviour 'unacceptable in any workplace'
The Conservative Party has launched an investigation into claims a senior MP watched pornography on his phone in the House of Commons.
The office of chief Tory whip Chris Heaton-Harris said "action will be taken" over the claim, which comes as misogyny in politics is under heightened scrutiny.
A female minister who said she was sat next to the unnamed frontbencher at the time told colleagues about the incident at a meeting of Tory MPs in Westminster on Tuesday night, according to reports.
A spokesperson for Boris Johnson said the alleged behaviour was "totally unacceptable", insisting that "allegations like this are taken incredibly seriously". They added: "While the chief is looking into it there nothing further we can say."
Asked whether watching pornography at work was a sackable offence, the spokesperson said: "I am not aware of the disciplinary action. Obviously, it is wholly unacceptable behaviour and it is being looked into."

Disgusted female Tories - including Theresa May - last night rounded on their male colleagues for the pervy culture which exists in Parliament in a fiery meeting.
Sharing their bombshell experiences in a #MeToo moment, women also demanded tough action against three Cabinet ministers accused of being sex pests.
One insider at the meeting said: "A total can of worms was unleashed at the meeting.

European Social Fund: Groups face cuts to services despite ?57m UK cash
By Alan Haslam BBC News NI 31 March 2023
Charities and community groups across Northern Ireland have said they could be forced to close or cut services after EU funding stopped on Friday.
The European Social Fund (ESF), which provided about ?40m a year for hundreds of community organisations, was halted as a result of Brexit.
The UK government announced a ?57m package to support groups facing a funding crisis on Friday morning.
But many that applied for a share of the money have been rejected.
Under the UK government's Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) around 100 organisations covering 18 large projects will receive financial backing.
However the ?57m funding is understood to be spread over two years, meaning some will lose out.
The Kilcooley Womens Centre in Ards and north Down, which offers women in vulnerable situations childcare, health and mental-health services, has been told ?900,000 funding it received from the EU will not be replaced.
Alison Blayney, who runs the centre, said the news was "absolutely devastating".
She said services for vulnerable women in the area had been "switched off overnight".
"They talk about levelling up - we've been levelled down today," she told BBC News NI's Evening Extra programme.
"This is not the picture that was painted for us back in 2016 - the promises of Brexit ring very hollow today.
"We'll continue to do our best but it's a very bleak outlook."
'Westminster doesn't care'
Patricia Lewsley-Mooney, chair of the Training for Women Network (TWN) in east Belfast, said the share of funding for women's services in Northern Ireland has effectively been cut from 8% to 3.7%.
TWN stands to lose a quarter of its funding after Friday's announcement, she said.
"This funding shows Westminster doesn't care about women in Northern Ireland.
"The saddest thing is the loss of this money to the women who need it the most."
BBC News NI contacted Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris but he was not available for comment.

Matt Hancock: Leaked messages suggest plan to frighten public
By Helen Catt 5 March 2023
Matt Hancock suggested to an aide that they "frighten the pants off everyone" about Covid, messages published by the Sunday Telegraph show.
It appears the former health secretary discussed when to reveal the existence of theKent variantof Covid to ensure people complied with lockdown rules.
In another exchange, the head of the Civil Service, Simon Case, suggested the "fear/guilt factor" was vital to the government's messaging.
The BBC has not verified the messages.
More than 100,000 WhatsApp messages were leaked to the Telegraph by the journalist Isabel Oakeshott, who has been a vocal critic of lockdowns.
The former health secretary has repeatedly criticised the leaks, referring to the published messages as a "partial, biased account to suit an anti-lockdown agenda."
In an exchange between Mr Hancock and an aide from 13th December 2020 - five days before the government scrapped plans to relax rules for many over Christmas - the former health secretary discusses when to "deploy" the announcement of the new variant.
They are talking about the possibility of the London Mayor Sadiq Khan resisting a possible lockdown for London.
The Department of Health adviser suggests: "Rather than doing too much forward signalling, we can roll pitch with the new strain."
Mr Hancock says: "We frighten the pants of everyone with the new strain."
The adviser responds: "Yep, that's what will get proper behaviour change."
The minister then asks: "When do we deploy the new variant."
Mr Hancock announced the new variant the following day.
In a separate WhatsApp conversation from January 2021, when lockdown measures were in place, Mr Hancock is seen discussing possible changes with Simon Case.
Mr Case warns against making small changes to the rules as looking "ridiculous". He talks about "ramping up messaging" adding the "fear/guilt factor" was "vital".
Other messages from October 2020 appear to show Mr Case suggesting coronavirus guidance should be delivered by "trusted local figures, not nationally distrusted figures like the PM, sadly". Boris Johnson was Prime Minister at the time.
In a statement responding to the leaks, Matt Hancock said: "There is absolutely no public interest case for this huge breach. All the materials for the book have already been made available to the Inquiry, which is the right, and only, place for everything to be considered properly and the right lessons to be learned.
"As we have seen, releasing them in this way gives a partial, biased account to suit an anti-lockdown agenda."
Chris Heaton-Harris, the government's Northern Ireland secretary, told BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg the messages give "almost a view into the psyche of Matt Hancock rather than into the actual decision-making".
"I think viewers would expect that politicians being human beings would express things in a human way."
The former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe, told the BBC's Stephen Nolan on Radio 5 Live that she had been "just as much against lockdown as Isabel Oakeshott" but found the leaks "profoundly unhelpful".
