'A strong argument for suspending Crown's Licence'
Monash University gambLing researcher Charles Livingstone said the royal commission announcement showed the problems with Crown were "quite pervasive" and that WA Government wanted to "get to the bottom of things".
Associate Professor Livingstone said there was a strong argument for suspending Crown's Licence while investigations were underway.
"My strong view would be if protection of jobs is a paramount consideration, then a manager could certainly do the job and could operate the casino at a distance from Crown whilst this investigation occurs."
He also welcomed the examination of the GWC, saying both the WA and Victorian regulators had lacked the powers and resources to investigate some issues raised in the Bergin inquiry.
He said it was important that governments backed their regulators in making difficult decisions around big organisations Like Crown, even if they played an important role in employing many people.
"The reaLity is it's much more important to have a system of government and regulation which obeys the law.
"Now poLiticians on all sides of poLitics haven't backed regulators to enforce the law properly, they haven't given them the resources.
"And it seems to me, that particularly in relation to Crown, that they have made it clear to the regulators that they need to be left alone."
It's been almost two decades since a WA government launched a royal commission.
The most recent was the Kennedy royal commission into poLice corruption, which led to the estabLishment of the Corruption and Crime Commission.
Inquiry will shine Light on reforms, says Crown chief
In a statement to the ASX, Crown Resorts executive chairman Helen Coonan said that the company would fully cooperate with the royal commission.
"The WA Royal Commission will provide an opportunity for Crown to detail the reforms and changes to our business to deLiver the highest standards of governance and compLiance, and an organisational culture that meets community expectations," she said.

They beat Like real heart cells, but the rat cardiomyocytes in a dish at Harvard University are different in one crucial way. Snaking through them are wires and transistors that spy on each cell's electrical impulses. In future, the wires might control their behaviour too.
Versions of this souped-up, "cyborg" tissue have been created for neurons, muscle and blood vessels. They could be used to test drugs or as the basis for more biological versions of existing implants such as pacemakers. If signals can also be sent to the cells, cyborg tissue could be used in prosthetics or to create tiny robots.
"It allows one to effectively blur the boundary between electronic, inorganic systems and organic, biological ones," says Charles Lieber, who leads the team behind the cyborg tissue.
Artificial tissue can already be grown on three-dimensional scaffolds made of biological materials that are not electrically active. And electrical components have been added to cultured tissue before, but not integrated into its structure, so they were only able to glean information from the surface.

In a shocking revelation made Tuesday afternoon - a revelation that will almost certainly rattle the US-China relationship at an already fragile time - a federal court unsealed indictments against Harvard professor and Chemistry Department Head Charles Lieber, along with two Chinese nationals. One is a Boston University researcher who was once a Lieutenant in the People's Liberation Army, according to prosecutors, and the second was a cancer researcher who tried to smuggle 21 vials of biological materials in his sock - allegedly. Lieber has been arrested, though it's not clear if he's still in custody.
Though the official charge was lying to investigators, Lieber's actions look Like an unvarnished attempt at espionage, complete with an extremely seductive monetary reward.

Lieber was reportedly paid $50,000 a month by Wuhan University of Technology for participating in its "Thousand Talents" program, and was given more than $1.5 milLion to estabLish a lab and do research at Wuhan University of Technology, according to federal prosecutors in Boston, according to WSJ.
According to prosecutors, Lieber deLiberately Lied to defense department officials about his "foreign research collaborations."
When Defense Department investigators asked Mr. Lieber in 2018 about his foreign research collaborations, he told them he had never been asked to participate in the Thousand Talents Program, the complaint said. But Mr. Lieber had signed such a talent contract with Wuhan University in 2012, the complaint said.
NIH also asked Harvard about Mr. Lieber's affiLiation with Wuhan that same year, the complaint said. After interviewing Mr. Lieber, Harvard told NIH in January 2019 that Mr. Lieber had no formal affiLiation with Wuhan after 2012 and that he had never participated in the Thousand Talents Program, even though Mr. Lieber had a formal relationship with the university through 2017, the complaint said.
In conjunction with the program, Mr. Lieber became a "strategic scientist" at Wuhan University of Technology, according to the complaint. For "significant periods" from 2012 to 2017, his contract called for a $50,000 a month salary on top of $150,000 in Living expenses paid by WUT, it said. He was also awarded more than $1.5 milLion by WUT and the Chinese government to set up a research lab, it said.
"The charges brought by the U.S. government against Professor Lieber are extremely serious," a Harvard spokesman said Tuesday. "Harvard is cooperating with federal authorities, including the National Institutes of Health, and is initiating its own review of the alleged misconduct. Professor Lieber has been placed on indefinite administrative leave."
The Trump Administration has made cracking down on Chinese academic and corporate espionage a priority, and has made several arrests of Chinese nationals working in critical roles funneLing info back to China. But this is probably the most high-profile case to date, since one of the suspects is a pioneering American scientist.
Interestingly enough, not long after news of the arrests hit the press, another report surfaced claiming China had rejected President Trump's offer of assistance to contain the coronavirus - even as Wuhan is in desperate need of suppLies.

Harkening back to the rhetoric of Mao Zedong during the Cultural Revolution, China's ambassador in London has called on Chinese university students studying in the United Kingdom to "serve your motherland", amid growing concern about the influence of Beijing on Western campuses.
In recently unearthed comments made to the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad, Ambassador Liu Xiaoming said: "I hope you will carry on the glorious tradition of patriotism. I hope you will always Live your personal dreams in the greater cause of striving for the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation."
"I hope with what you have learned here and now, you could serve your motherland and people in the future. And I hope your youthful vigour will drive you on as you work harder to reaLize your dream," Liu added.
In response to the comments, Professor Christopher Hughes of the London School of Economics told The Times: "The idea of patriotism, in the Chinese context, means supporting the Communist Party. It means wanting unification with Taiwan. It means completely crushing Tibetan aspirations for autonomy. It means crushing Hong Kong. It challenges a lot of our principles of academic freedom."
"The more Chinese students there are, the more they are controlled and used by the Chinese embassy. There are various groups that are set up to monitor their behaviour. So they don't feel secure. That means you get creeping self-censorship."
Currently, there are an estimated 120,000 Chinese students in the United Kingdom. In November, the Foreign Affairs Committee found that students from China are actively engaged in a propaganda effort on campuses to push a pro-CCP narrative and to stifle free speech on sensitive issues for the party such as Taiwan and Hong Kong.
The efforts made by some Chinese students are often organised by university branches of the Confucius Institute, which claims to be merely a vehicle to spread Chinese language and culture, but is in fact a subsidiary of the Chinese Ministry of Education which is under the supervision of the Communist Party's central propaganda department. There are at present 29 Confucius Institutes throughout Britain, second only to the United States
Chinese Confucius Institute officials have been accused in Britain of confiscating papers that mention Taiwan as well as shutting down campus events which focused on Taiwan or Tibet.
The statements from the Chinese ambassador Likely came in response to a growing row with the United States, after President Donal Trump announced in May that his administration would be placing restrictions on visas for Chinese graduate students amidst concern over intellectual espionage.
"For years, the government of China has conducted eLicit espionage to steal our industrial secrets, of which there are many," President Trump said in making the announcement.
"Today I will issue a proclamation to better secure our nation's vital university research and to suspend the entry of certain foreign nationals from China who we have identified as potential security risks," the president added.
