Repair Kit for NASA's NICER Mission Heading to Space Station

NASA will deliver a patch kit for NICER (Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer), an X-ray telescope on the International Space Station, on the agency's Northrop Grumman 21st commercial resupply mission.
Astronauts will conduct a spacewalk to complete the repair.
Located near the space station's starboard solar array, NICER was damaged in May 2023.

The mission team delivered the patch kit to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston in May 2024 so it could be prepped and packed for the upcoming resupply mission.
"It's incredible that in just one year, we were able to diagnose the problem and then design, build, test, and deliver a solution," said Steve Kenyon, NICER's mechanical lead at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
"We're so excited to see the patches installed during a future spacewalk, return to a more regular operating schedule, and keep doing groundbreaking science."

From its perch on the station, the washing machine-sized NICER studies the X-ray sky.
It has precisely measured superdense stellar remnants called neutron stars, which contain the densest matter scientists can directly observe.
It has also investigated mysterious fast radio bursts, observed comets in our solar system, and collected data about Earth's upper atmosphere.
But in May 2023, NICER developed a "light leak," where unwanted sunlight began entering the telescope.

Photos taken aboard the station revealed several areas of damage to NICER's thermal shields.
The shields are 500 times thinner than a human hair and filter out infrared, ultraviolet, and visible light while allowing X-rays to pass through.
They cover each of NICER's 56 X-ray concentrators, sets of 24 nested circular mirrors designed to skip X-rays into corresponding detectors.
A sunshade tops each concentrator and shield assembly, with a slight gap in between. The sunshades are segmented by six internal struts, resembling a sliced pie.

The largest damage to the shields is around the size of a typical U.S. postage stamp. The other areas are closer in size to pinheads.
During the station's daytime, the damage allows sunlight to reach the detectors, saturating sensors and interfering with NICER's measurements.
The mission team altered their daytime observing strategy to mitigate the effect. The damage does not impact nighttime observations.

"NICER wasn't designed to be serviced or repaired," said Keith Gendreau, the mission's principal investigator at Goddard. "It was installed robotically, and we operate it remotely.
When we decided to investigate the possibility of patching the largest damaged areas on the thermal shields, we had to come up with a method that would use the existing parts of the telescope and station toolkits.
We couldn't have done it without all the support and collaboration from our colleagues at Johnson and throughout the space station program."
The solution, in the end, was simple. The team designed patches, each shaped like a piece of pie, that will slide into the sunshades. A tab at the bottom of each patch will turn into the space between the bottom of the sunshade and the top of the thermal shield, keeping it in place.

Astronauts will install five patches during the spacewalk. They'll cover the most significant areas of damage and block the sunlight affecting NICER's X-ray measurements.
The repair kit contains 12 patches in total, allowing for spares if needed. Astronauts will carry the patches in a caddy, a rectangular frame containing two spare sunshades with the patches held inside.
"NICER will be the first X-ray telescope in orbit to be serviced by astronauts and only the fourth science observatory to be repaired overall - joining the ranks of missions like NASA's Hubble Space Telescope," said Charles Baker, the NICER project systems engineer at Goddard.

"It's been amazing to watch the patch kit come together over the last year. NICER has taught us so many wonderful things about the cosmos, and we're really looking forward to this next step of its journey."
The NICER telescope is an Astrophysics Mission of Opportunity within NASA's Explorers Program, which provides frequent flight opportunities for world-class scientific investigations from space utilizing innovative, streamlined, and efficient management approaches within the heliophysics and astrophysics science areas.
NASA's Space Technology Mission Directorate supported the SEXTANT component of the mission, demonstrating pulsar-based spacecraft navigation.

Four of country's 28 Republican governors don't sign letter in support of Barrett confirmation

Twenty-four of the country's 28 GOP governors are backing the Senate confirmation of White House nominee Amy Coney Barrett - with President Trump critics Govs. Charles Baker and Larry Hogan among those not in support.

The Republican Governors Association over the weekend announced the release of the letter and the signatures.

"As governors, we strongly support President Trump's nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court of the United States, and we urge the Senate to confirm her appointment as an associate justice," reads the letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the committee.

The Judiciary Committee begins its confirmation hearings Monday on Capitol Hill.

Baker is the governor of Massachusetts, and Hogan is the governor of Maryland.

The two other GOP governors who did not sign the letter are Chris Sununu of New Hampshire and Phil Scott of Vermont.

Sununu's spokesperson said the governor didn't sign the letter because he has no official role in the confirmation process. However, Sununu signed letters supporting Trump's previous nominations of Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.

Sununu has said he believes it is appropriate for Barrett to have a hearing but has not voiced specific support or opposition to her nomination, according to the Associated Press.

"Judge Amy Coney Barrett is an exceptional choice by President Trump to serve as an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court," said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. "As a distinguished jurist committed to upholding the original intent of our Constitution, there is no doubt that Judge Barrett will be a tremendous addition to the court."

Four of country's 28 Republican governors don't sign letter in support of Barrett confirmation

Twenty-four of the country's 28 GOP governors are backing the Senate confirmation of White House nominee Amy Coney Barrett - with President Trump critics Govs. Charles Baker and Larry Hogan among those not in support. The Republican Governors Association over the weekend announced the release of the letter and the signatures. "As governors, we strongly support President Trump's nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court of the United States, and we urge the Senate to confirm her appointment as an associate justice," reads the letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the committee. The Judiciary Committee begins its confirmation hearings Monday on Capitol Hill.

Baker is the governor of Massachusetts, and Hogan is the governor of Maryland. The two other GOP governors who did not sign the letter are Chris Sununu of New Hampshire and Phil Scott of Vermont. Sununu's spokesperson said the governor didn't sign the letter because he has no official role in the confirmation process. However, Sununu signed letters supporting Trump's previous nominations of Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. Sununu has said he believes it is appropriate for Barrett to have a hearing but has not voiced specific support or opposition to her nomination, according to the Associated Press. "Judge Amy Coney Barrett is an exceptional choice by President Trump to serve as an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court," said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. "As a distinguished jurist committed to upholding the original intent of our Constitution, there is no doubt that Judge Barrett will be a tremendous addition to the court."

Summary
To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Great Depression. The protagonist is Jean Louise ("Scout") Finch, an intelligent though unconventional girl who ages from six to nine years old during the course of the novel. She is raised with her brother, Jeremy Atticus ("Jem"), by their widowed father, Atticus Finch. He is a prominent lawyer who encourages his children to be empathetic and just. He notably tells them that it is "a sin to kill a mockingbird," alluding to the fact that the birds are innocent and harmless.


When Tom Robinson, one of the town's black residents, is falsely accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a white woman, Atticus agrees to defend him despite threats from the community. At one point he faces a mob intent on lynching his client but refuses to abandon him. Scout unwittingly diffuses the situation. Although Atticus presents a defense that gives a more plausible interpretation of the evidence-that Mayella was attacked by her father, Bob Ewell-Tom is convicted, and he is later killed while trying to escape custody. A character compares his death to "the senseless slaughter of songbirds."

The children, meanwhile, play out their own miniaturized drama of prejudice and superstition as they become interested in Arthur ("Boo") Radley, a reclusive neighbour who is a local legend. They have their own ideas about him and cannot resist the allure of trespassing on the Radley property. Their speculations thrive on the dehumanization perpetuated by their elders. Atticus, however, reprimands them and tries to encourage a more sensitive attitude. Boo makes his presence felt indirectly through a series of benevolent acts, finally intervening when Bob Ewell attacks Jem and Scout. Boo kills Ewell, but Heck Tate, the sheriff, believes it is better to say that Ewell's death occurred when he fell on his own knife, sparing the shy Boo from unwanted attention. Scout agrees, noting that to do otherwise would be "sort of like shootin' a mockingbird."


To Kill a Mockingbird is both a young girl's coming-of-age story and a darker drama about the roots and consequences of racism and prejudice, probing how good and evil can coexist within a single community or individual. Scout's moral education is twofold: to resist abusing others with unfounded negativity but also to persevere when these values are inevitably, and sometimes violently, subverted. Lee reportedly based the character of Atticus Finch on her father, Amasa Coleman Lee, a compassionate and dedicated lawyer. The plot of To Kill a Mockingbird was inspired in part by his unsuccessful youthful defense of two African American men convicted of murder. Criticism of the novel's tendency to sermonize has been matched by praise of its insight and stylistic effectiveness.

One character from the novel, Charles Baker ("Dill") Harris, is based on Truman Capote, Lee's childhood friend and next-door neighbour in Monroeville, Alabama. After the phenomenal success that followed the publication of To Kill a Mockingbird, some suspected that Capote was the actual author of Lee's work, a rumour put to rest when, in 2006, a 1959 letter from Capote to his aunt was found, stating that he had read and liked the draft of To Kill a Mockingbird that Lee had shown him but making no mention of any role in writing it.

The novel inspired numerous adaptations, the most notable of which was the classic 1962 film starring Gregory Peck as Atticus. His Academy Award-winning performance became an enduring part of cinema history. Other adaptations included a Broadway play that was adapted by Aaron Sorkin and debuted in 2018.

Hillary's Dark Money Group Relies Heavily on Six Donors and Campaign Money

The dark money nonprofit launched by Hillary Clinton following her defeat against Donald Trump relied heavily on just six donors and an $800,000 money transfer from her former presidential campaign committee during its first year, according to tax forms provided to the Washington Free Beacon.

Clinton's nonprofit, the New York-based Onward Together, was incorporated on April 24, 2017, by Marc Elias, a prominent Democratic lawyer and partner at the Washington, D.C.-based Perkins Coie law firm, filings show. Elias served as Clinton's top campaign lawyer.

Clinton launched Onward Together to allow her to be a part of the resistance against Trump and to encourage "people to organize, get involved, and run for office." The group would additionally send money to already established liberal groups who could provide direct action against Trump and Republicans.

The Free Beacon first attempted to obtain Onward Together's 2017 tax forms over a month ago but did not receive a response at the time. However, a search of state filings in North Carolina showed that the group had taken in just $3.1 million in contributions during its inaugural year.

Nick Merrill, Clinton's spokesperson, recently provided the group's tax forms.

The tax forms show that six donors and a money transfer from her former campaign committee accounted for $1.3 million of the $3.1 million of the funds the nonprofit hauled in throughout its first year, more than 40 percent of its total haul.

Onward Together, which is a 501(c)(4) "social welfare" group that is not required to disclose its donors, reports contributions from seven unnamed individuals in the amounts of $800,000, $500,000, $11,419, $7,266, $7,000, $5,710, and $5,190. The remaining $1.8 million came from individuals who provided $5,000 or less.

While the donors are not listed on the tax forms, the Free Beacon previously found that Clinton had made a $800,000 transfer from Hillary for America, her campaign committee, to Onward Together days after the group was incorporated. That transfer alone accounted for 25 percent of the group's total funds.

Merrill called it a "distortion" that Clinton's group received more than 40 percent of its funds from the six donors and the presidential campaign committee and added that it has "been an effort fueled by individual donors giving $35 at a time on average to help fund some of the most impressive political organizations in America, all of which helped usher in a wave of Democratic wins across the country last November."

Onward together provides financial support to a number of organizations who are involved in the resistance and handed out $1.1 million in contributions to left-wing organizations throughout its first year.

The donations ranged between $30,000 and $100,000 and went to the Color of Change PAC, Emerge America, Emily's List, Swing Left, Run for Something, National Redistricting Foundation, Latino Victory Project, IVote, Alliance for Youth Action, the Arena, Collective Future, Ultraviolet, and Voto Latino.

Minyon Moore, Onward Together's president who is a principal at the D.C.-based Dewey Square Group, did not collect a salary from the group. Charles Baker, the director and treasurer of Onward Together who is the president and founder of the Dewey Square Group, also did not collect a salary.

Dennis Cheng, Onward Together's finance director who previously was the chief development officer at the Clinton Foundation from 2011 to 2015 and the national finance chair for Clinton's 2016 campaign, was paid a $60,000 salary for 30 hours of work per week.

Kelly Mehlenbacher, the group's chief operating officer, was paid $35,000 for 20 hours of work per week while Huma Abedin, the longtime Clinton aide who is listed as an officer of the group, collected $45,000 for a reported 15 hours of work per week.
