ICICI-Videocon case: ED grills Chanda Kochhar, husband and Venugopal Dhoot
The three deposed as part of a regular summon and their statement is being being recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), ED said

The ED Friday questioned former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar, her husband Deepak Kochhar and Videocon promoter Venugopal Dhoot in connection with a money laundering case involving their business concern, officials said.

The three deposed as part of a regular summon and their statement is being being recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said.

They have been grilled by the central agency in the past in connection with the alleged corruption case involving the bank and Videocon group.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had last month questioned and recorded the statements of Chanda Kochhar and Deepak Kochhar over multiple sessions at its office in Delhi.

CBI Probes Officer In Chanda Kochhar Case After Suspected Leaks: Sources
The Kochhars and Venugopal Dhoot allegedly obtained a loan for the Videocon Group through massive irregularities and channelled part of it into a firm founded by Deepak Kochhar, suggesting a quid pro quo.

The Central Bureau of Investigation is probing the role of one of its own officers for allegedly leaking information on the ICICI bank fraud case, sources told NDTV. Sudhanshu Dhar Mishra has already been transferred to the agency's Economic Offences branch in Ranchi and a detailed inquiry will be held on the matter, sources said.

The filing of the case against Chanda Kochhar, her husband Deepak Kochhar and Videocon chief Venugopal Dhoot - allegedly involved in massive irregularities in obtaining a loan for the Videocon Group – had drawn criticism from Union minister Arun Jaitley, who called it "investigative adventurism".

This is the second instance where the CBI is investigating one of its officers for alleged irregularities. In October, the agency had booked its number 2 officer Rakesh Asthana for allegedly accepting bribes from one of the suspects in a case. It led to a huge controversy that laid bare the infighting going on between the agency's two top officers.

The ICICI bank fraud case was one of those pending without progress for long.

Investigating officer Mishra – who was part of the Banking and Securities Fraud Cell – had signed off on the case on Wednesday.

A day later, transfer orders came for the officer.

Sources in the CBI told NDTV that there was suspicion that the officer was delaying the case and an investigation was launched against him on January 22, a day before the case against the Kochhars was filed.

Immediately after registration of the case, searches were to be conducted. There was however suspicion, that information about the searches were being leaked. The searches were finally conducted under the supervision of another officer, Mohit Gupta.

The Kochhars and Venugopal Dhoot allegedly obtained a loan for the Videocon Group through massive irregularities and channelled part of it into a firm founded by Deepak Kochhar, suggesting a quid pro quo. Mr Dhoot invested crores in Mr Kochhar's NuPower Renewables, the agency said.

Hillary Clinton to meet Tata, Ambani

Corporate leaders Ratan Tata, Mukesh Ambani and others are likely to explore measures to boost bilateral business ties during their brainstorming session over breakfast with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Saturday.
Clinton is scheduled to arrive in Mumbai on Friday night on an official visit to India during which high-level discussions are likely to promote bilateral co-operation in the $30 billion Indian civil nuclear power programme and the $43-billion bilateral trade. She will be flying-in from the Czech Republic capital, Prague.

India's top businessmen are expected to meet her at the iconic Taj Hotel. The sea-facing hotel bore the brunt of a terror attack in November last year.

Clinton is expected to meet Ratan Tata who leads India's premier conglomerate, the Tata group, along with other top industrialists like Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries and Godrej group Chairman Adi Godrej. A few top Tata group officials are also expected to attend the meet.

Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy's wife Sudha Murthy, who is deeply involved with corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and Chanda Kochhar, who heads India's largest private sector bank, ICICI, are also expected to interact with the US Secretary of State. Gita Piramal is also understood to be one of the invitees from India Inc.

This is Hillary Clinton's first visit to India after assuming charge as the US Secretary of State in the Obama administration early this year.

The global economic meltdown has particularly affected the United States. The measures taken by its government to beat the recession are likely to be discussed in the meet.

India's relatively strong growth of 6 per cent and its resilient economy has emerged as a strong focus area for the US in recent years and Clinton's visit is expected to give a further boost to the burgeoning trade-ties between the two countries.

Clinton will be staying at the Ratan Tata-owned Taj Hotel's new wing. Usually, foreign dignitaries are put up in the hotel's heritage wing which is under renovation following the November 26 terror strike. She will, therefore, be staying in the tower section of the hotel.
