Court to Look into UK Government's Concealed COVID-19 Spending
Despite a law requiring the U.K. government to publish details on all COVID-19 contracts, roughly £3 billion (US$3.92bn) doled out to private companies remains concealed, according to the Good Law Project, a non-profit organization that takes on public interest legal cases.
Personal Protective EquipmentDetails on billions worth of COVID-19 public procurement contracts have not been released by the U.K. government, according to the Good Law Project (Photo: UK Department for International Development / CC BY 2.0) The organization, along with members of Parliament from multiple parties, launched judicial review proceedings against the government on Sunday for failing to disclose adequate information on its contract recipients within a required 30-day period.
"The Government's persistent failure to abide by this law makes it impossible for these contracts to be properly scrutinized," it said in a press release.
"When the Government is deliberately keeping us in the dark during a public health crisis, there's no option but to press for transparency through the courts," wrote Caroline Lucas, a MP and former leader of the U.K.'s Green Party. She, along with Labour MP Debby Abrahams and Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran issued the judicial review proceedings together with the Good Law Project.
The Good Law Project estimates that the government has given roughly £11 billion ($14.38bn) to private companies for COVID-19 related tenders, and despite the fact that some of these contracts remain concealed, information that is publicly available has already raised its concern.
"Huge sums of public money have been awarded to companies with no discernible expertise. Sometimes the main qualification seems to be a political connection with key government figures," said the organization's director, Jolyon Maugham QC.
The legal action comes following reports last week that PPE Medpro, a company run by a former business associate of Baroness Michelle Mone, a conservative peer, won a £122 million ($159.4m) contract to supply millions of medical gowns to the U.K.'s National Health Service.
The company that received the contract had been set up just 44 days before it was awarded, and the tender was not advertised to other bidders.
This appears to be more than just an isolated incident, as reported by OpenDemocracy, which discovered last Friday that a Conservative Party councillor, Steve Dechan, received a £156 million ($203.8m) no-bid contract to import PPE from China, despite the fact that his small company was unprofitable.
"When one politically-connected company is awarded uncompetitive public contracts it smells a bit off, but when this happens again and again it reeks of cronyism," Steve Goodrich, a senior research manager at Transparency International told the outlet.

Want a free trade deal with the US? Then align with Washington not Brussels on foreign policy, former Trump aide tells BoJo
A former aide to US President Donald Trump, Richard Goldberg, has warned British PM Boris Johnson that if the UK wants a free trade agreement with the US, then he'll need to follow Washington and not Brussels on foreign policy.
In an interview with BBC Radio 4 on Wednesday, Iran hawk Richard Goldberg - who recently stepped down from his role on the National Security Council following his part in ramping up US tensions with Tehran - ostensibly issued Johnson a veiled threat.
Goldberg suggested that Johnson think long and hard about the UK's position on the Iran nuclear deal and foreign policy more generally. He insisted that in post-Brexit Britain, it's "less important what Brussels thinks and far more important what Washington thinks."
It's absolutely in his interest and the people of Britain's interest to join with President Trump and the United States, to realign your foreign policy away from Brussels, and to join the maximum pressure campaign to keep us all safe.
Goldberg's comments have been widely panned on social media, with many interpreting his words as an ultimatum, rather than a "choice" being presented to PM Johnson. Green MP Caroline Lucas claimed that it was "clear" that if the UK is to secure a trade deal with the US then "we'd have to follow Trump's dangerous foreign policies."

Deeper Discovery Into Origins Of The Green New Deal
Internationally, the Green New Deal first appeared in England in 2008 with a 44-page report by the Green New Deal Group, simply called A Green New Deal. An excerpt appears below, concluding with a download button and a supporting video produced by a sister organization called the New Economics Foundation.
The board of the Green New Deal Group is stacked with radical members of the green movement, including Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth:
Larry Elliott, Economics Editor of the Guardian
Colin Hines, Co-Director of Finance for the Future, former head of Greenpeace International's Economics Unit, policy advisor to Caroline Lucas
Tony Juniper, former Executive Director of Friends of the Earth
Jeremy Leggett, founder and Chairman of Solarcentury and SolarAid
Caroline Lucas, Green Party MEP (Politician)
Richard Murphy, Co-Director of Finance for the Future and Director, Tax Research LLP
Ann Pettifor, Fellow at New Economics Foundation, former head of the Jubilee 2000 debt relief campaign, Campaign Director of Operation Noah
Charles Secrett, University of Cambridge, Advisor on Sustainable Development, former Director of Friends of the Earth
Andrew Simms, Policy Director, New Economics Foundation), board member of Greenpeace.
The Green New Deal is the total encapsulation of Sustainable Development, aka Technocracy, in a political form. All of its rhetoric is about economics but the plea is for political action to allow it to happen. As with the Trilateral Commission in 1973, which claimed it was never about politics but rather economics, they hijacked the U.S. Executive Branch in order to execute their economic policies. It was never about political power per se, but rather about economic accumulation.
The global elite are lurking behind the Green New Deal crowd, which has become their 'useful idiots' to promote their schemes of Agenda 21, 2030 Agenda, New Urban Agenda, etc. Real environmentalists who attended the 1992 Agenda 21 conference in Rio De Janeiro wrote a book called The Earth Brokers in 1994. They saw through the Agenda 21 scam and wrote:
"We argue that UNCED (UN Conference on Economic Development) has boosted precisely the type of industrial development that is destructive for the environment, the planet, and its inhabitants. We see how, as a result of UNCED, the rich will get richer, the poor poorer, while more and more of the planet is destroyed in the process."

'No more talks': Theresa May shuts door on opposition parties, as Brexit descends further into chaos
PM Theresa May has no plans to stage further talks with UK opposition party leaders who have accused her of ignoring their demands, in an attempt to broker a new Brexit agreement, as chances of securing a deal ebb away ever more.
A spokesperson for the PM has stated that May will instead focus on meetings with "a large number" of her ministers in small groups and on a one-to-one basis, the Independent reports.
The unwillingness of May to engage in more talks could potentially anger opposition leaders, who have been left frustrated by the PM's apparent lack of compromise on some of her redlines, such as a customs union with the EU and a second referendum.
In the aftermath of the crushing defeat of her Brexit deal on Tuesday, May pledged to find a cross-party solution to the crisis, inviting opposition leaders to talks over the next steps to take to break the impasse.
All accepted the PM's invitation apart from Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who told May in no uncertain terms that no discussions could take place unless she took 'no-deal' off the negotiating table.
Those that did attend the meeting with the PM reported unsatisfactory outcomes, with Scotland's first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, claiming that May's offer of talks "is a promise to listen, but only if we all agree with her."
The Green Party's Caroline Lucas came away from discussions saying that May should stop blackmailing MPs and that there is "no sign PM is willing to compromise."
The resistance to engaging further on a cross-party basis increases the chances of the PM failing to put forward a meaningful Brexit 'plan b' on Monday, when she addresses MPs in Parliament. It's more likely that May will issue some kind of holding statement.
The fear for the prime minister is that amendments to her statement could be tabled by MPs, which may include trying to block the threat of a no-deal Brexit or a second referendum. If such amendments are successful, it would risk inflicting irreconcilable damage, splitting her Tory party.
It comes as Downing Street says that the PM has spoken to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Mark Rutte, the Dutch prime minister, about the ongoing Brexit crisis. No official dates have been announced for the UK to reopen negotiations with the EU.

EXPOSED: Anti-Brexit March One Third the Size Organisers Claimed
The anti-Brexit People's Vote march was just one-third of the size organisers claimed, it has been revealed.
The group, which pushes for a second referendum, claimed that 700,000 people marched on London on October 20th, 2018, but Scotland Yard confirmed to The Telegraph that the estimate is closer to 250,000.
"The Greater London Authority (GLA) has included an estimated attendance figure of 250,000 in a debrief document," Scotland Yard said in a statement to the conservative newspaper following a Freedom of Information request.
"Please note this is not a Metropolitan Police Service estimate as we have not recorded an estimated attendance figure for the march," the police force added.
The People's Vote, launched in April 2018 by Remainer MPs Chuka Umunna (Labour), Anna Soubry (Conservative), and Caroline Lucas (Green), is supported by many of the key players in the Tony Blair-backed Remain continuity campaign Open Britain and pushed for a "public vote" on the final Brexit deal - i.e., a second referendum.
Labour's London mayor Sadiq Khan, who spoke at the march and hailed it a "historic moment in our democracy," oversees the GLA.
The People's Vote claims its wildly inaccurate estimations were "based on intelligence from both volunteers and professional stewards."

'A historic moment': 670,000 march to demand Final Say on Brexit at second biggest demo in a century
The crowds stretched so far back that plenty of people never even made it to the rally. Masses overflowed through the streets of London for more than a mile, from Hyde Park Corner to Parliament Square, as an estimated 670,000 protesters took their demand for a fresh Brexit referendum right to Theresa May's doorstep. They came from every corner of the UK, in what is believed to be the largest demonstration since the Iraq War march in 2003, when more than a million people turned out in the capital to oppose the conflict. Amid the swathes of EU flags and banners, there was also a growing sense that campaigners, MPs and activists were realising, perhaps for the first time, that this was a battle that could be won. "We were the few, and now we are the many," Tory MP Anna Soubry told the crowds crammed into Parliament Square. "We are winning the argument and we are winning the argument most importantly against those who voted Leave."
She said: "We will not walk away. We will take responsibility and sort out this mess with a people's vote." Speaking to The Independent beforehand, she said many Tory MPs were privately supportive of a second referendum amid bitter divisions in the party. Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran said the sheer scale of the event showed that "confidence is growing" in the fight for a fresh vote.
To huge cheers, London mayor Sadiq Khan said the march marked a "historic moment in our democracy". He told protestors: "We've heard some complain that a public vote would be undemocratic and unpatriotic. But the opposite is true. "There's nothing more democratic - nothing more British - than trusting the people to have the final say on our future." MPs from across the political spectrum addressed the rally, including Green MP Caroline Lucas, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable, Labour's Chuka Umunna and Tory MP Dr Sarah Wollaston, who drew huge cheers when she compared Brexit to a botched operation.
