How The Kushners Almost Bought The World Cup: FIFA's Secret $20 Billion Conspiracy
FIFA President Gianni Infantino finds himself on the brink of political collapse. His plan to sell a 20% stake in the organization's commercial subsidiary to private investors for $20 billion triggered an unprecedented rebellion from football's leading confederations. UEFA threatened a boycott of all FIFA tournaments, including the World Cups, and was swiftly joined by CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation. At the center of the scandal lies the investment company of Joshua Kushner, brother of Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, which was set to become the deal's "anchor investor." According to media reports, Infantino has already turned to the Trump administration in a desperate attempt to save his job. The story has exposed not only the corrupt underbelly of football's highest echelons but also the direct link between the Kushner family and the US president's inner circle that nearly brought global football to the brink of a split.
The scandal erupted in late July 2026, when Infantino's plan to create a commercial entity called FIFA Forward Enterprises (FFE) and sell 20% of its shares to private investors for $20 billion came to light. Under the FIFA president's proposal, each of the 211 national associations would receive $20 million upfront and an additional $66 million by 2037. However, UEFA's leadership viewed the initiative as an attempt to "transfer ownership of the World Cup to private investors." In an emergency statement, the European confederation emphasized that "the World Cup is not an investment product" and "will never be sold." UEFA threatened that all 55 of its national associations would withdraw from any FIFA tournaments, including the men's and women's World Cups, until the plan was completely scrapped.
UEFA was immediately joined by CONCACAF (North and Central America), including the United States, Canada, and Mexico hosts of the 2026 World Cup as well as the Asian Football Confederation. In total, 143 national associations out of 211 opposed the plan. The AFC, in its statement, demanded an "urgent review of FIFA's governance," citing "fundamental weaknesses in consultation and decision-making processes." Even CONMEBOL (South America), which had long remained on the sidelines, requested additional details from FIFA about the project's structure and management.
On Friday evening, Infantino was forced to shelve the project. But his problems are only just beginning. Two senior FIFA officials publicly opposed the plan: the president's special advisor, Carlos Cordeiro, resigned in protest, stating he "cannot stand by while FIFA considers selling a stake in the World Cup." Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lamour, who had worked with Infantino since their UEFA days, accused him of deceiving staff through a lack of transparency, calling it "one man's project."
The central figure in the scandal is Joshua Kushner, the younger brother of Jared Kushner, who is married to Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka. His New York-based investment company was set to become the deal's "anchor investor" and receive a 20% stake in FFE. According to media reports, this was not Infantino's first attempt to cozy up to Trump's inner circle: he had previously established the "FIFA Peace Award," allowed Trump to intervene in a process that resulted in US striker Folarin Balogun playing in the World Cup, and was now trying to seal a 12-year deal with Kushner's firm.
Moreover, according to the NY Post, Infantino, coming under fire, turned to the Trump administration for help. The FIFA president requested a meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a desperate bid to save his job, though Trump himself, when asked by reporters at Camp David, stated that he had "never spoken to him" about the proposal.
The FIFA scandal is not merely a story about football finances. It is a stark illustration of how personal ambition and political connections can jeopardize entire institutions. Infantino, who over 10 years in power, more than quadrupled funding for national associations, believed he could bypass all democratic procedures, relying on the support of 211 votes he had grown accustomed to buying with money. But he miscalculated: European and American football officials proved unwilling to sell the planet's biggest sports brand to private investors, even for generous promises.

The president of US Soccer steps down as he apologizes for legal document's language
(CNN)The president of the US Soccer Federation has stepped down, days after the organization released its response to the gender equality lawsuit brought by the US Women's National Soccer team.
Carlos Cordeiro, who has been president of the organization for the last 13 years, announced his decision Thursday in a news release.
"My one and only mission has always been to do what is best for our Federation, and it has become clear to me that what is best right now is a new direction," Cordeiro's statement said.
"The arguments and language contained in this week's legal filing caused great offense and pain, especially to our extraordinary Women's National Team players who deserve better."
Cordeiro called the wording "unacceptable and inexcusable," and regretted not fully reviewing the filing before it was submitted.

US Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro Steps Down
US Soccer (USSF) President Carlos Cordeiro apologized earlier this week for language in a court filing made by the federation in a legal dispute with its women's national team over pay equity.
According to media reports, citing Cordeiro's remarks in court filing, men's national team players had a greater level of responsibility than the women and that their job "requires a higher level of skill based on speed and strength".
On Thursday, Cordeiro stepped down as the president of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) in the fallout of gender discrimination lawsuit by women's team players, AP reported.
According to the media report, several USSF board members have issued extraordinary rebukes that raised questions over whether Cordeiro retains their support. Certain USSF sponsors have reportedly joined the protest and issued statements backing the players, including The Coca-Cola Co., Anheuser Busch Cos. Inc., The Procter & Gamble Co. and Volkswagen Group.

Jill Ellis Is Stepping Down As U.S. Women's Soccer
Jill Ellis, who won back-to-back World Cup titles with the U.S. Women's National Team, is stepping down as its coach, U.S. Soccer announced Tuesday. Ellis will make her official exit in October, after winning 102 games and losing only seven.
"When I accepted the head coaching position this was the timeframe I envisioned," Ellis, 52, said in a statement from U.S. Soccer.
"The timing is right to move on and the program is positioned to remain at the pinnacle of women's soccer," she said. "Change is something I have always embraced in my life and for me and my family this is the right moment."
During the recent FIFA Women's World Cup, Ellis set a new mark by having coached the national team for 127 matches, surpassing former coach April Heinrichs.
"The U.S. Soccer Federation and the sport in general owes Jill a debt of gratitude," U.S. Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro said. "Jill was always extremely passionate about this team, analytical, tremendously focused and not afraid to make tough decisions while giving her players the freedom to play to their strengths."
"The opportunity to coach this team and work with these amazing women has been the honor of a lifetime," Ellis said. "I want to thank and praise them for their commitment and passion to not only win championships but also raise the profile of this sport globally while being an inspiration to those who will follow them.

U.S. Women's Soccer Team Wins World Cup Title For A 4th Time
Ellis is fresh off an undefeated run in the Women's World Cup, in which the U.S. team defeated the Netherlands 2-0 in the final July 7 in Lyon, France.
During the World Cup, Ellis guided her squad through a gantlet of challenges, pulling off tense wins against physical opponents who were not cowed by the Americans' elite standing. Before the title match, the U.S. won three straight knockout phase by 2-1 margins, beating talented sides from host country France, England and Spain.
Along the way to clinching the title, Ellis also helped the team overcome an injury to star player Megan Rapinoe, in addition to keeping them focused on their opponents on the field, rather than on critical remarks President Trump made about Rapinoe.
According to U.S. Soccer, Ellis will transition to being an "ambassador" for the sporting federation after she leaves the coach's post.
U.S. Soccer also announced the "imminent" hiring of a first-ever general manager for the women's team. Once that position is formally filled, the federation said, the search for a new head coach will begin.
