Starbucks to lay off 1,100 of corporate employees

Starbucks previously fired its employees and closed many stores in major cities.

ew Starbucks Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol announced Monday the national coffee shop chain will lay off 1,100 corporate employees worldwide amid declining profits.

Starbuck's net sales in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024 fell 3% to $9.1 billion.

Niccol made the announcement in a letter to Starbucks employees in which he also said he would announce who would lose their jobs by midday Tuesday.

Additionally, several hundred open and unfilled positions would be eliminated.

Niccol forewarned last month that corporate layoffs would be announced by early March.

"Our intent is to operate more efficiently, increase accountability, reduce complexity and drive better integration," Niccol wrote.

According to the Associated Press, Starbucks has 16,000 corporate employees worldwide. The layoffs will not affect the roasting, warehouse and barista staff.

"Our size and structure can slow us down, with too many layers, managers of small teams and roles focused primarily on coordinating work," Niccol wrote.

Starbuck was among the first to cash in on America's coffee and cafe craze but has struggled in recent years amid competition from other chains and independent shops and such challenges as customers' long waits in lines, too many drink-menu options, and an overcomplicated corporate system.

In addition, safety concern, particularly in the COVID-19 pandemic era, forced Starbucks to close shops in such big cities as Los Angeles, Seattle, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Portland, Oregon.

Starbucks plans to lay off 1,100 corporate employees globally as new Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol streamlines operations.

In a letter to employees released Monday, Niccol said the company will inform employees who are being laid off by mid-day Tuesday. Niccol said Starbucks is also eliminating several hundred open and unfilled positions.

"Our intent is to operate more efficiently, increase accountability, reduce complexity and drive better integration," Niccol wrote in the letter.

Starbucks has 16,000 corporate support employees worldwide, but that includes some employees who aren't impacted, like roasting and warehouse staff. Baristas in the company's stores are not included in the layoffs.

Niccol said in January that corporate layoffs would be announced by early March. He said all work must be overseen by someone who can make decisions while the the Seattle coffee giant reduces the complexity of its structure and eliminates silos within the company that slow communication.

"Our size and structure can slow us down, with too many layers, managers of small teams and roles focused primarily on coordinating work," Niccol wrote.

Starbucks hired Niccol last fall to turn around sluggish sales. He has said he wants to improve service times - especially during the morning rush - and reestablish stores as community gathering places.

Niccol is also cutting items from Starbucks' menu and experimenting with its ordering algorithms to better handle its mix of mobile, drive-thru and in-store orders.

Starbucks' global same-store sales, or sales at locations open at least a year, fell 2% in its 2024 fiscal year, which ended Sept. 29. In the U.S., customers tired of price increases and growing wait times. In China, its second-largest market, Starbucks faced growing competition from cheaper rivals.

Mark Zuckerberg may be a digital pioneer, but on Tuesday he flashed a taste for analog bling.

The Meta CEO appeared to wear a rare Swiss watch which sells for nearly $1 million as he announced the decision to scrap third-party fact-checking by his popular Facebook and Instagram apps.

On Tuesday, as he argued that content moderation on Facebook and Instagram has "gone too far," Zuckerberg sported an oversized black t-shirt, a gold chain and a luxury Greubel Forsey "Hand Made 1" watch on his left wrist, worth approximately $900,000, according to a Bloomberg report.

The pandemic pays: Top CEOs now earn $12.7m on average after receiving 5% median pay rise despite the pandemic ravaging their firms' profits and tanking the economy

CEOs saw their compensation packages rocket by an average of five per cent last year even as COVID-19 ravaged the US economy.

Although many chief executives saw their base salaries cut, they were handed stock options which ended up swelling their total compensation beyond what they'd have received had coronavirus not battered the US economy.

Among the most eye-catching pay rises was that given to Carnival cruise lines CEO Arnold Donald. His total pay soared by $13.3 million in 2020 - up 19 per cent from 2019 - after he was handed $5.2 million in stock options to encourage him to stay with the firm.

The value of those options could rise or fall, experts say, although cruise lines are expecting a bumper summer amid predictions of a vacation-booking bonanza by COVID-weary Americans.

Donald enjoyed the bumper pay boost despite Carnival sinking to a $10.2 billion loss for the fiscal year, as COVID-19 halted sailings, with cruise lines including Carnival yet to resume sailings.

The CEO takes home 302 times more a year than the average Carnival worker, whose salary sits at $44,000.

The median pay package for a CEO at an S&P 500 company hit $12.7 million in 2020, according to data analyzed by Equilar for The Associated Press.

Since median pay symbolizes the middle pay package, that means half the CEOs in the survey made more, and half made less.

Chipotle Mexican Grill CEO Brian Niccol earned $38 million in 2020, up 137.5 percent from the $16 million he earned last year. His base salary rose from $1.2 million in 2019 to $1.24 million in 2020.

Niccol was handed $14.8 million in bonuses and incentives due to the healthy fast food chain's 'stellar' performance during COVID, with takeout one of the few pleasures still available to Americans while most of the economy was shuttered. The median employee pay at Chipotle is $13,127, meaning Niccol earns 2,989 times more annually than the average worker at his firm.

Lowe's CEO Marvin Ellison earned $23 million in 2020, up 98 percent from the $11.62 million he earned last year. His base salary was $1.5 million. Almost 60 per cent of Ellison's pay package was comprised of stock options for the retailer, valued at $14 million. Ellison received a further $5.8 million as part of a 'non-incentive equity plan' offered by the Lowe's board. The median employee pay at Lowe's is $24,554, meaning the CEO to average worker pay ratio is 940 to 1.

Chipotle founder Steve Ells exits board Chipotle Mexican Grill said on Friday founder Steve Ells has stepped down from the board, handing over the role of executive chairman to Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol.

Since founding Chipotle in 1993, Ells has held or shared the CEO role until two years ago. He stepped down from the top role after succumbing to investor pressure on failing to turn around the burrito chain from a string of food safety lapses.

The company's stock, which took a big hit when two major illness outbreaks were reported, has recovered to touch a new high under CEO Niccol.

Since taking over, the former Taco Bell executive has rolled out several new intiatives, including the launch of new campaigns to showcase the quality of food and create more transparency around sourcing.

The restaurant chain said it would reduce the size of its board to seven from 10, as two directors, Matthew Paull and Paul Cappuccio, will not stand for reelection.

Shares of the company fell 1.7 percent, at $714.45, during early afternoon trading.

The source of the outbreak that sickened nearly 650 people at a Chipotle in Ohio last month has been identified.

Stool samples taken from sick customers tested positive for Clostridium perfringens, a bacterium that can cause food poisoning when food is stored at unsafe temperatures,
according to the Delaware General Health District, the public health department in Delaware, Ohio.

Although cooking kills C. perfringens cells, it doesn't necessarily kill bacterial spores that can grow into new cells, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS).
That means that if food is left sitting out for too long, or it's not refrigerated, the spores can grow and produce new cells, which may lead to illness when the food is eaten.
Indeed, C. perfringens bacteria thrive in temperatures between 40 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit (4 to 60 degrees Celsius), a range that's often called the "danger zone," because it's not too hot, or too cold, for bacteria to grow.
C. perfringens illnesses often occur when foods are prepared in large amounts, and are then kept warm for a long time before serving, HHS said.
In Ohio, health officials identified 647 people who got sick after eating at a Chipotle in the city of Powell between July 26 and July 30. Customers reported symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pains, according to Business Insider.
An inspection of the restaurant found that some foods were not being kept at proper temperatures. For example, beans were not held at a warm enough temperature, and lettuce was not properly cooled, Business Insider reported.
