In early 2013, while Ehud Barak was entering the final months of his term as Israel's Minister of Defense, he was being privately courted by international private banks in Davos, Switzerland, who sought to use his political connections to attract ultra-wealthy individuals as new clients. In March 2013, soon after he resigned from the defense ministry, Barak received a "rainmaker" agreement from Boris Collardi, then-CEO of Julius Baer Group, a Swiss private bank based in Zurich.

Barak, however, was not a big fan of de Rothschild. He sent Epstein an article on Edmond de Rothschild's $300 million investment fund for Africa, in which Ariane explained that the bank hoped to invest in a booming consumer economy, not endless war for resources. "Africa will be the equivalent of China. What is of interest to me is that it is not led any more by mines and energy, but that banks and insurance companies are developing," she said. Barak was horrified, captioning the article: "Globalization of cultural and media consumption."

Epstein was similarly chagrined. "I am aware," he lamented. "She is lost." It's no mystery why Epstein and Barak disagreed with de Rothschild's take on Africa; the two men were simultaneously engaged in mining and energy investments in several African countries, selling Israeli security technology to embattled presidents in Nigeria, C?te d'Ivoire, and beyond. Creating a booming consumer economy in Africa was not on their agenda.

In his emails to Barak, Epstein indicated he viewed Ariane de Rothschild as a misguided byproduct of nepotism. He compared Benjamin de Rothschild's decision to appoint her as chairman of the bank, to Barak putting his son-in-law (a classical cellist) in charge of the Israeli military: "[She] has many interfamily battles as well as biz. it would have been like you making Yoed [Nir], the defense minister because he was family."

Whatever misgivings Epstein had about de Rothschild, they didn't impede his desire to leverage her resources for grander ambitions. Epstein was a super-connector of the world's elite, and began building a relationship between the former prime minister and the private banking heiress. He invited Barak and de Rothschild to dinner at his New York mansion on September 23, 2013.

Epstein reassured Barak that he was in good company with former U.S. military leaders with lucrative careers peddling intelligence-linked cybersecurity products: former NSA and CIA director Michael Hayden and US cyber commander Keith Alexander. He wrote, "ok, consider you michael hayden, and keith alexander. would be easy to [raise] serious money, you wouldn'[t] have to do the dog and pony show."

In 2019, Bloomberg revealed that Ariane de Rothschild, CEO of Edmond de Rothschild Group (then vice chairman), visited Epstein's New York mansion in 2015. Epstein was found dead in his prison cell less than two weeks later.

The bank denied it at the time, but admitted four years later that de Rothschild met Epstein as part of her "duties" at the institution - coming after the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) released the sex offender's meeting calendars.

Epstein provided introductions to US finance leaders and law firms and provided tax and risk consulting, the bank said, while also assisting de Rothschild personally on "a couple of occasions" with estate management advice.

House disclosures show that Epstein and de Rothschild remained close in the years before Epstein's death. In an email exchange in 2018 with former Obama White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler, Epstein gossiped about de Rothschild's marital issues with Benjamin de Rothschild, heir to the Rothschild fortune. He wrote to Ruemmler, "ariane said ben giving her a very hard time, and did not know about tattoo...she said he wants her to do wife like things. ugh." Ruemmler replied, "Barf."

Edmond de Rothschild Group and Julius Baer were both implicated in major tax evasion and money laundering investigations during the same time period. The communications do not reflect Epstein or Barak's involvement with the bank's responses to the investigations.

Zurich Prosecutors Probing Tip on Ex- Julius Baer CEO and Bankers

Zurich prosecutors are following up a tip about alleged wrongdoing by ex-Julius Baer Group Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Boris Collardi and former managers of the bank days after it emerged Swiss regulator Finma is taking action against Baer. Officials are exploring the anonymous information from February to determine whether there is an "initial suspicion of criminal misconduct" and grounds to open criminal proceedings, a spokesman for the Zurich prosecutors' office said. In Switzerland, they're obliged to evaluate such tips and the spokesman stressed that formal criminal proceedings haven't yet been opened. No further details about the tip were given.

Finma revealed this week it had began enforcement proceedings against Baer late last year over its mishandling of an Argentine entrepreneur suspected of processing tens of millions of dollars through fraudulent shell companies. That came on top of a reprimand in February from the regulator for falling "significantly short in combating money laundering" and a ban from acquiring new companies.

Collardi left Zurich-based Julius Baer in 2017 for Geneva-based Pictet & Cie, where he's a managing partner and co-head of global wealth management. Pictet and Collardi declined to comment on the anonymous report, according to a statement from the company. Under Collardi, Julius Baer bought the international operations of Bank of America Merrill Lynch and made nearly a dozen small acquisitions, particularly in Latin America, doubling the money it oversaw in the process.

In the latest Finma probe, Julius Baer employees discovered irregularities in 2016 and the Argentine client's account was closed. But Switzerland's Money Laundering Reporting Office wasn't informed as it should have been, Swiss newspaper NZZ reported.

Julius Baer's Moody's Downgrade Worsens Latin America Hangover

Julius Baer Group Ltd.'s attempts to move on from a damaging money-laundering scandal in Latin America took another blow after the bank was downgraded by Moody's Investors Service.

In a move that is set to increase the Swiss bank's borrowing costs, Julius Baer's issuer rating was cut to Baa1 from A3 by Moody's after the bank was reprimanded by Switzerland's financial regulator for money-laundering failings a little over a week ago.

A decade of breakneck expansion under former Chief Executive Officer Boris Collardi hit a wall in 2018 with the arrest of one of Baer's former high-flying bankers in Miami, who was later convicted and sentenced to 120 months in prison for his role in laundering money for Petroleos de Venezuela SA, Venezuela's state-owned oil company.

Then came a regulatory probe, the results of which were announced earlier in February. The Zurich-based lender fell "significantly short in combating money laundering" between 2009 and early 2018, Swiss regulator Finma said. It banned the bank from making any "large and complex" acquisitions as punishment and appointed an auditor to oversee progress. A spokesman for Zurich-based Julius Baer didn't immediately respond when contacted outside of normal working hours.
