It was 3:15 on the morning of June 26, 1980, and Congressman Bob Livingston was extraordinarily drunk, hiding in the congressional gym beneath the Rayburn House Office Building, petrified that a team of highly trained right-wing homosexual assassins working on behalf of Ronald Reagan was about to kill him.

With his new book, James Kirchick offers a window into an era when "the fear of homosexuality, or even the mere accusation of it, destroyed careers, ended lives, and induced otherwise decent people to betray colleagues and friends." In this exclusive excerpt, he reveals the extent to which whisperings of a conspiracy from California to Washington, when met with political opportunism and overblown anxiety over the potential presence of gay people in positions of power, nearly altered the course of history.

To the extent that the Louisiana Republican is remembered today, it's for the brief but sensational role he played in America's most infamous political sex scandal. On the same day in December 1998 that Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about his affair with a White House intern, Livingston, then the House speaker-designate, shocked the nation with his own admission of adultery. Preempting a journalistic expos? that had dredged up evidence of his past relationships with women not his wife, he not only refused the speakership but announced his resignation from Congress altogether.

What people don't know is that nearly two decades before this bit part in the Clinton impeachment drama riveted the nation, Livingston was at the center of another scandal involving politicians and illicit sex, one that, in his own words, had the potential to be "world-shaking." Most explosive about this whole terrible intrigue, and what tied it all together, was the nature of the sexual activity involved.

For most of the 20th century, the worst thing one could possibly be in American politics was gay. The mere insinuation of homosexuality was sufficient to destroy a political career, and things could get particularly vicious between intraparty adversaries. The first outing in American politics, of the isolationist Massachusetts Sen. David Walsh in 1942, was perpetrated by interventionist allies of fellow Democrat, President Franklin D. Roosevelt. While public attitudes have become far more open, the insinuation that someone is gay - whether true or not - remains a potent weapon (as elements of the campaign against North Carolina Republican Rep. Madison Cawthorn recently illustrated), especially in socially conservative milieus.

This account of the alleged "homosexual ring" that controlled Ronald Reagan, and the efforts to expose it on the eve of the 1980 Republican National Convention that nominated him for the presidency, is compiled from interviews with several of the surviving participants and documents uncovered in the papers of former Washington Post Executive Editor Ben Bradlee. Appropriately for a story involving what was once considered the gravest sin in American politics, it has never been told until now.

Larry Flynt offers $1M for dirt on lawmakers, government officials

Larry Flynt is on the trail for any dirt on congressional lawmakers and government officials.
The Hustler magazine publisher placed a full-page ad in Sunday's Washington Post, offering upward of $1 million for any information about "infidelity, sexual impropriety or corruption concerning a U.S. senator, congressperson or prominent government official."
The ad says sources with documented evidence would be paid if Flynt publishes the "verified story." He is asking for submissions by phone or email.
In September, Flynt went after former Republican presidential contender Rick Perry, offering a million-dollar bounty to anyone "who can document an illicit sexual encounter with the Texas governor.
Flynt also placed a similar ad 14 years ago in the Post, prompted by President Clinton's impeachment trial for perjury in his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
He asked for any information about government officials having "an adulterous sexual encounter," like Clinton.
In late 1998, Flynt exposed then incoming Speaker Bob Livingston (R-La.), set to take over for Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) for several affairs. After the revelations, Livingston shocked fellow colleagues when he stepped down as Speaker-elect and decided to leave the House in May 1999.

Pornographer and publishing giant Larry Flynt has put a price tag on his passion for annihilating the careers of politicians. The Hustler magazine publisher will pay $1 million for dirt on corrupt congressmen.
The self-proclaimed "smut peddler who cares" took out a full-page ad in the Sunday edition of the Washington Post this weekend, asking readers to reveal stories of "infidelity, sexual impropriety or corruption" involving members of Congress. Should someone step forward and provide an account worthy of one of Flynt's many publishing endeavors, he is offering $1 million for the details.Flynt, who founded Hustler 40 years ago, has been a critic of the US government since entering publishing. In addition to launching a series of off-shoot publications, he has spent the last several decades dabbling in political advocacy, even briefly running for the governorship of California in 2003. He has also been the subject of several high-profile First Amendment cases.Unlike his other print products, there are no powerful pictures or snazzy headlines on the full-page advert Flynt took out in the Post. Instead, the porn giant put down a pretty penny on a costly classified ad that relied on the bold bounty of $1 million for details on a current United States senator, congressperson or "prominent government official.""Can you provide documented evidence of your claims?" continues the ad. "Larry Flynt and Hustler Magazine will pay you up to $1 million if we chose to use your material and publish your verified story." The publisher insists that all calls and correspondence will be kept strictly confidential and provides both a 1-800 number and email address for interested snitches.Flynt has yet to publically discuss if his ad has brought in any of the breaking news that he is hoping for, but if history is any indication, a revelation might only be down the road. In the midst of a Republican-waged war against Democrat President Bill Clinton at the height of the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal, Flynt offered a similar bounty for dirt on a Republican Party politician. Back then he sought info on any GOP official having "an adulterous sexual encounter" like Clinton's, and ending up receiving claims that portrayed a Republican congressman in a negative light. In 1999, Louisiana Representative Bob Livingston was expected to take on the role of House speaker after Newt Gingrich resigned after the previous year's election. Livingston ran as the only Republican candidate for speaker in a GOP-controlled House and was poised to take the title and carry through with the impeachment proceedings against President Clinton. Flynt, however, said his call for arms yielded dirt on Livingston, who in turn admitted to an extramarital affair and promptly resigned as Speaker-elect. Clinton, of course, was acquitted of impeachment shortly after. Flynt has also claimed to have come into possession of proof of Gingrich's own affairs before the former Speaker acknowledged them to the public, but chose not to discuss them as the speaker had already offered his resignation. Last year, Flynt extended a job offer to former Congressman Anthony Weiner after a scandal involving the representative's Twitter account forced him to resign. "I feel that your unfortunate resignation is a prime example of unfounded political pressure and the hypocrisy that has invaded democracy in Washington DC," wrote Flynt.The Washington Post claims that their Sunday edition reaches over 1.7 million readers - in the DC area alone.

A network of limited liability companies, offshore accounts, shell corporations and other secretive entities spending on interests related to former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has spent over $1 million on influence in the United States-but the source of funding for recent foreign influence operations remains a mystery.Tymoshenko-a longtime Ukrainian politician who gained international attention after she was imprisoned for corruption charges from 2011 until 2014-has remained a public figure and recently announced her plans to run in Ukraine's next presidential election.

On May 7, 2018, a limited liability corporation named ITBC LLC was formed in the state of Maryland. Weeks later, using the name Innovative Technology and Business Consulting, the LLC had already inked a $50,000-per-month contract-including a six-figure payment upfront at the time of signing-to pay the Livingston Group, a lobbying firm run by former Congressman Bob Livingston (R-La.) for "government affairs representation and lobbying services before the federal government on promotional issues related to Ukraine and any other matters mutually agreed upon." The Livingston Group's FARA registration paperwork primarily refers to the foreign principal's name as "Innovative Technology and Business Consulting LLC," but parts of their contract on file with the Justice Department refers to the entity as "International Technology and Business Consulting LLC" and Maryland business records simply refer to the entity by its initials, "ITBC LLC." ITBC LLC has no website under any of its currently known nom de plumes and Maryland's business entity search engine lists the office address as a suite in Pikesville that houses other LLCs, law firms, and provides "serviced offices to rent." The LLC's resident agent is Sergei Krasnitsk, whose signature is also on the contract with Livingston Group in FARA records, according to FARA disclosures on file with the Department of Justice and made available through the Center for Responsive Politics' Foreign Lobby Watch tool. Krasnitsk is also listed as an agent for another Maryland company called 4G Development which was incorporated in 2011. The Livingston Group's paperwork registering as a foreign agent of ITBC LLC includes no mention of Tymoshenko.

A blog hosted by the Center for American Progress, headed by top Obama ally John Podesta, is blasting the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for its tangential ties to the Egyptian government while ignoring the extensive lobbying activities of John's brother Tony Podesta for the Egyptian government.

"There is at least one powerful, multinational entity that has continually stood by Mubarak and the Egyptian elite and has continually fought efforts to democratize the country," says the blog post, weaving a complicated tale of the Chamber's Egypt affiliate lobbying on behalf of the Mubarak regime.

The problem is: Mubarak's top Washington ally is not the U.S. Chamber, but Tony Podesta, Bob Livingston and Toby Moffett, a trio of K Street heavy-hitters who are paid $1.7 million a year to represent the Egyptian government.

In fact, John Podesta even co-founded the Podesta Group lobbying firm doing extensive lobbying work for Egypt.



Center for American Progress makes no mention of this fact on its blog today. John should ask Tony about the two "decorative boxes" the Egyptian government awarded Tony for his hard work on behalf of Mubarak.

December 19, 1998: After 13 1/2 hours of debate over two days, the House of Representatives approves two articles of impeachment, charging President Clinton with lying under oath to a federal grand jury and obstructing justice. Clinton vows to fill out his term and appeals for a bipartisan compromise in the Senate.

Arizona Senator John McCain, who supposedly visited the CIA's al-Qaeda mercenaries in Syria earlier this week, said on Thursday that weapons sent to the radical Salafists will not fall into the wrong hands.

"We can identify who these people are. We can help the right people," McCain told CIA asset Anderson Cooper, an anchor at the Pentagon's psychological operation headquartered at CNN.

McCain defied reality and said only a small portion of the so-called rebels are radical jihadists fighting to convert Syria into failed state dominated by Sharia law. In fact, the CIA sponsored "rebels" are largely radical Sunni Salafists who behead Christians and feed them to dogs.

Remarkably, McCain said al-Nusra only accounts for 7,000 of the 100,000 mercenaries inside Syria. In fact, al-Nusra and al-Qaeda dominate the effort to topple al-Assad. "Every single day, more and more extremists flow in... They're flowing in all the time, these extremists. But they still do not make up a sizable portion," he said.

"Nowhere in rebel-controlled Syria is there a secular fighting force to speak of," the New York Times reported in April. "The Islamist character of the opposition reflects the main constituency of the rebellion," the newspaper stated, explaining that this fact is due to "the failure of more mainstream rebel groups to secure regular arms supplies," in other words negligence on the part of the United States as it has supposedly failed to more actively support the Free Syrian Army, initially a hodgepodge of secular Syrians who were woefully ill-prepared to fight al-Assad's well-trained army. Earlier this month, it was reported that FSA mercenaries are defecting to al-Nusra and the radical Muslim groups in record numbers.

Despite McCain's delusions, the man he supposedly met with - Gen. Salem Idris, the leader of the Supreme Military Council of the Free Syrian Army - has teamed up with Arhar al-Sham, a partner of al-Nusra Front, recently designated as a terrorist organization by the United States.

"Idris claims his group doesn't work with Al-Nusra, but the two have fought side by side and shared arms in their battle to overthrow Bashar Assad," writes Bob Livingston. "The question is: Why isn't McCain on his way to Guantanamo Bay wearing an orange jumpsuit, handcuffs and shackles?"

Finally, it is something of a stretch to believe that a U.S. senator would venture into a dangerous war zone. The event appears to be another loosely orchestrated establishment media fantasy created for propaganda purposes as neocons and other globalist warmongers in the United States, Britain and France prepare for a more active and murderous role in a conflict initiated by the United States as part of its "Arab Spring" operation to install a new round of dictators - this time, under the banner of the Muslim Brotherhood - throughout the Middle East.
