AI Safety Institute Debuts with Big-Name Backers and a Censorship Agenda

Every major speaker at the Copenhagen summit has a resume built on telling platforms what to take down.

Common Sense Media's Youth AI Safety Institute arrived at the Danish Parliament this week and the guest list is stacked with people who think you can't be trusted to speak freely online.

Hillary Clinton, Ursula von der Leyen, former Biden Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Ofcom chief Melanie Dawes, and the head of an organization that wants to break end-to-end encryption are all gathering at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen to announce what they'd like to do next about AI and children.

The "next" part is where it gets concerning. The Youth AI Safety Institute, launched by Common Sense Media on May 5, says it will "complement efforts by regulators and policymakers to translate frameworks such as the EU AI Act, the Digital Services Act, and the UK Online Safety Act into practical protections for child-safe AI."

Those three censorship laws represent the most aggressive government-directed speech suppression regimes currently operating in the Western world. The Institute isn't questioning them. In fact, it wants to help implement them and push them further.

The summit, titled "Keeping Our Children and Families Safe in the AI Era," is co-hosted by Common Sense Media, Save the Children Denmark, and Margrethe Vestager, who spent years as the European Commission's executive vice president building the regulatory architecture that now lets EU officials order platforms to delete content.

More than 200 policymakers, tech executives, and civil society figures are expected. King Frederik X of Denmark is giving the opening address. The Duchess of Edinburgh will attend. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is on the Bill.

And so is Pinterest CEO Bill Ready, whose company helped pay for the Institute's creation.

Who's Funding This?
The Youth AI Safety Institute is bankrolled by a mix of philanthropic donors and deep industry money.

The industry funders are Anthropic, the OpenAI Foundation, and Pinterest. All three make AI products that the Institute will evaluate and rate. The Institute says it "maintains complete editorial independence over published results." But the structural incentive is obvious enough to name. Companies are funding an organization that will publish safety ratings of their competitors, define what "safe" means, and push governments to enforce those definitions through law.

John Giannandrea, a former senior AI executive at both Apple and Google, sits on the Institute's Board of Advisors. So does Murthy, who has publicly advocated for digital ID systems to combat online "misinformation" and worked directly with Big Tech companies to target speech the government classified as false during the Biden administration.

Common Sense Media CEO James P. Steyer framed the project by citing the Institute's own polling. "Eight percent-that is the share of parents across the four countries we surveyed who are confident AI companies are prioritising teen safety," Steyer said.

"For more than two decades, Common Sense Media has built the standards, ratings and research that families trust through every major technological transformation young people have lived through, from streaming to social media. Our Youth AI Safety Institute applies that work to AI: independent standards, real testing and clear accountability for the products young people use. Copenhagen is where that mission begins in Europe."

The polling, conducted across Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Poland by Common Sense Media, SocialSphere, and YouGov, found that 77% of parents want strong laws governing AI. The press materials use that number to argue for "stronger laws and child-centred AI governance," which in the context of this particular coalition means more age verification, more content restrictions, and more government involvement in deciding what AI systems are allowed to say.

Congress Pushes for Nationwide Internet Age Verification Plan.

Republican lawmakers are proposing a new way to enforce accountability on tech companies to comply with age verification laws, despite resistance from websites like Pornhub. The App Store Accountability Act (ASA), introduced by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and Representative John James (R-MI), proposes a different model: requiring app stores themselves to verify users' ages and pass that information to apps when they are downloaded.

The Bill is part of a broader push in Congress to tighten safeguards for minors online and has earned support from major tech companies, including Facebook parent company Meta, Pinterest, and Snap. Pinterest CEO Bill Ready argues that one standard would simplify the process and reduce the confusion created by a patchwork of state requirements. "The need for a federal standard is urgent," he said."I think most people at most of these companies probably do want to protect kids," Sen. Lee said, adding that support from tech companies like Pinterest "makes a big difference."

However, the proposal faces resistance from civil liberties groups and digital rights advocates. Critics warn that compulsory age verification could limit access to lawful online content, raising First Amendment concerns. They also cite significant privacy risks, arguing that systems requiring users to submit sensitive personal information could expose them to data breaches or misuse.

Some major websites have rejected attempts to enforce online age verification. Pornhub has withdrawn its services from states that require government-issued ID or similar credentials for access to adult material. The company argued that these laws push users toward unregulated platforms while forcing supposedly legitimate sites to collect data they would prefer not to hold.

In 2025, the Supreme Court upheld a state age-verification law for explicit content in Texas, with the majority concluding that states may require age checks to prevent minors from viewing harmful material.

Supporters of federal action contend that the ASA would avoid the growing compliance difficulties posed by differing state regulations. Sen. Lee has stated, "I don't believe that there's anything unlawful, unconstitutional, or otherwise problematic about this legislation," arguing that an app-store-centered approach would reduce repeated verification across multiple platforms.

Bill Clinton plans big changes for Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting

Former President Bill Clinton plans big changes for this year's Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting "by necessity" to address the changing landscape for global development and increasing needs driven by war and climate disasters.

"We need to redefine how we show up, how we work, and how we find ways to honor our common humanity," Clinton wrote in a letter to the CGI community released Thursday. "This September, our goal will be to connect dots across issues, expose the consequences, and confront the complicated issues in front of us."

Since its launch in 2005, the CGI annual meeting has served as a platform for political, business and philanthropic leaders to announce new initiatives or new financial support for existing programs addressing the world's problems. At the 2024 meeting, former First Lady Jill Biden announced $500 million in new annual spending for women's health research, while Prince Harry outlined his plans to help children and their parents navigate cyberspace better.

This year's meeting - held once again during United Nations General Assembly week and led by Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Clinton Foundation Vice Chair Chelsea Clinton - will also include Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, as well as Gilead Sciences CEO Daniel O'Day, Pinterest CEO Bill Ready, and Open Society Foundations President Binaifer Nowrojee. However, the focus this year will be on forging new solutions for economic, health, climate and humanitarian issues.

"The CGI community is built for moments like this," Clinton wrote. "This year marks two decades of our community convening and responding directly to global crises."

In previous years, CGI helped organize responses to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Caribbean hurricanes in 2017, and the COVID-19 pandemic. CGI estimates it has helped more than 500 million people in 186 countries over the past two decades.

President Donald Trump's administration has swiftly dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development, arguing that many programs did not advance American interests. A number of philanthropic funders have stepped in to replace some support of humanitarian programs and public health initiatives, but many gaps remain.

CGI hopes to close those gaps with a series of "Leaders Stage Sessions," where representatives from a wide range of organizations - including GoFundMe CEO Tim Cadogan, Center for Disaster Philanthropy CEO Patricia McIlreavy, AFL-CIO President, and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten - will work together to create new initiatives.

"Now is the time to stand up and roll up our sleeves - and do our part to reverse the trend lines and begin charting a brighter future," Clinton said in a statement.

On Tuesday, the House Oversight Committee subpoenaed President Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as part of its Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking investigation. Organizers declined comment on what impact, if any, the subpoenas would have on planning for the CGI annual meeting. Former Secretary Clinton has been called to provide a deposition on Oct. 9, while former President Clinton has been called to offer a deposition on Oct. 14.

One wonders what more Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. need do to defile the court's reputation before Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) will do something more than issue a terse tweet or letter.
After the New York Times reported on an upside-down flag identified with the Jan. 6insurrectionists flying over Alito's Virginia home in the days after Jan. 6, Durbin responded that he didn't have "anything planned" in response. No hearing? No Bill Ready to go? Nope.
"I think [Alito's] explained his situation. The American public understand what he did," Durbin proclaimed, as if Alito's excuses were the definitive explanation for a gross breach of judicial ethics. "But I don't think there's much to be gained with a hearing at this point. I think he should recuse himself from cases involving Trump and his administration." And if Alito doesn't recuse, Durbin cannot find any "recourse other than impeachment, and we're not at that point at all." That weak-kneed response would not be Durbin's worst on Alito this week.
When a second flag was discovered flying, this time over Alito's New Jersey home, the Times reported that the "Appeal to Heaven" flag in question was also "carried by rioters at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021" and "is now a symbol of support for former President Donald J. Trump, for a religious strand of the 'Stop the Steal' campaign and for a push to remake American government in Christian terms." And this symbol of Christian nationalism was aloft Alito's house in 2023.
With a second flag story, Durbin got huffy on social media. "This incident is yet another example of apparent ethical misconduct by a sitting justice, and it adds to the Court's ongoing ethical crisis," he tweeted. "Justice Alito must recuse himself immediately from cases related to the 2020 election and the January 6th insurrection."
In response to Durbin's empty words, constitutional scholar Laurence Tribe declaredthat the issue was no longer "just about the insurrection-abetting Sam Alito, [but] about the AWOL Senator Durbin." Tribe added, "He has no excuse for not holding hearings about Alito now."
After all, Alito cannot very well blame his wife or another rude neighbor for this violation of the principle of judicial impartiality. The second flag not only sheds doubt on the veracity of the first round of excuses; it suggest he harbors an affinity for an antidemocratic group that defines the United States as a White Christian country, repudiates the division between law and Christian dogma and views the United States as under siege from secular forces. At the very least it suggest theappearance of such partiality. That is a gigantic problem for a justice who is required by statute to be and appear impartial. On issues involving the establishment of religion, gay rights and abortion, litigants opposing theChristian nationalistviewpoint should not have confidence they are dealing with a fair and impartial court.
Durbin inadvertently revealed in a statement just how derelict he has been:
The Senate Judiciary Committee has been investigating the ethical crisis at the Court for more than a year, and that investigation continues. And we remain focused on ensuring the Supreme Court adopts an enforceable code of conduct, which we can do by passing the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act.
More than a year?! (Well, at least we know he has remained "focused" on ethics reform.)
Alito's misconduct also brings Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., who heads an entire branch of government, to an inflection point. If he does nothing, Roberts is complicit in the destruction of the court's reputation. Such spinelessness might even snatch from Roger B. Taney, the author of the majority opinion inDred Scott, the title of "worst chief justice ever."...
Alito's misconduct, if unaddressed, would make the 2024 election a referendum on the court. Barring a sufficient response from Alito and Roberts, voters will be left to decide how to rehabilitate the court, rid it of the stench of scandal and insulate it from MAGA extremists. Democrats must be prepared to offer solutions.

Now as we just reported, Twitter has banned the president permanently. Twitter is now literally doing the bidding of the Democrats.

Facebook and Instagram alReady suspended Trump for at least two weeks and possibly permanently. Shopify even pulled MAGA goods from their online stores. Because MAGA hats are apparently evil now.

Democrats and media are also blaming Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and calling on them to resign or be expelled.

This is crazy. It was a riot. With thousands of peaceful people and some who were not. Yet it's being used to shut down the opposition and to shut down any election questions. McConnell, Democrats feud over state aid amid coronavirus



A fight over funding for state and local governments is emerging as an early flashpoint in talks over another coronavirus relief Bill.

The clash - which pits Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) - is raising fresh questions about the ability to keep Congress's response to the coronavirus bipartisan.

Congress has alReady appropriated nearly $2.8 trillion to combat the severe economic and health impact of the coronavirus, as 26 million people have filed for unemployment and nearly 51,000 people have died in the United States, according to Johns Hopkins University.

But Democrats are pledging to get more help for state and local governments in the phase four coronavirus relief Bill that could pass Congress as soon as next month.

"There will not be a Bill without state and local, OK?" Pelosi said when asked about the potential that it will be left out.

Pelosi has characterized it as the "centerpiece" of the next Bill but declined to say how much Democrats will push for. She told reporters during a press conference that the number is probably "equivalent to what we've done for small businesses." Congress has provided nearly $660 Billion in loans to businesses through the Paycheck Protection Program.

That puts Democrats squarely at odds with McConnell, who set off alarm bells among governors and lawmakers from hard-hit states when he said this week that states should be allowed to declare bankruptcy as they seek more money from the federal government to deal with the economic fallout from the coronavirus.

"I would certainly be in favor of allowing states to use the bankruptcy route," McConnell told radio host Hugh Hewitt.

"My guess is their first choice would be for the federal government to borrow money from future generations to send it down to them now so they don't have to do that. That's not something I'm going to be in favor of," he added.

McConnell has positioned Republicans as wary of additional funds for state and local governments, saying the idea would have to be "thoroughly evaluated" within his conference.

The issue is just the latest point of tension between McConnell and Pelosi, who clashed earlier this month over whether another coronavirus relief Bill was even needed.

Pelosi, on Friday, asked reporters, "Speaking of Mitch, what's gotten into him?"

"The president is asking people to inject Lysol into their lungs, and Mitch is saying that states should go bankrupt. It's a clear, visible within 24 hours of how the Republicans reject science and reject governance," she said.

The two are on different timelines as they contemplate another round of federal help. Democrats want to have a Bill Ready to go by the time they return to the Capitol as soon as May 4, indicating that they expect to take the lead on the legislation.
