The former mayor of Scranton, Pennsylvania, was sentenced Friday to seven years in federal prison on charges that he shook down businesses for bribes and campaign contributions.

Bill Courtright resigned last year as mayor of the city of 78,000 and pleaded guilty to bribery, extortion and conspiracy. Prosecutors said Courtright took bribes from a company that had a contract with the city to collect delinquent taxes and garbage fees.

Courtright must surrender to serve his prison sentence by Oct. 30, The (Scranton) Times-Tribune reported. U.S. District Judge Malachy Mannion also ordered Courtright to pay a fine of $25,300.

Courtright told the judge Friday that he "betrayed" Scranton residents, adding: "As hard as I try, I can't give you an answer why I did what I did. I should have known better."

Courtright, 63, served as Scranton's mayor from 2014 until 2019.

Scranton, PA Mayor to Resign

Scranton Mayor Bill Courtright will be stepping down from the position at 4 p.m. today. At the same time, a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office indicates Courtright is scheduled to appear in Federal Court on Tuesday morning.

Courtright, who's been mayor since 2014, sent a brief letter to City Council on Monday. In the single-sentence letter, Courtright wrote "I hereby resign from my position as Mayor of the City of Scranton."

Courtright's letter provides no insight into the reasoning behind his resignation, but his resignation comes in the wake of a raid of both his home and City Hall.

Published reports by the Associated Press indicate that the FBI raided both Courtright's home and City Hall in January of this year. As of yet, no charges have been filed in connection with the raid.

However, Courtright is scheduled to appear before Chief Judge Christoper C. Conner at the Herman T. Schneebeli Federal Building in Williamsport. A release from the U.S. Attorney's Office indicates that the court proceeding is "related to an ongoing public corruption investigation."

The U.S. Attorney's Office will be holding a press conference in Scranton on Tuesday afternoon.

Reached Monday afternoon, a representative from the mayor's office said there was no comment from Courtright at this time.

The Times-Tribune of Scranton says FBI agents executed the raid on Wednesday in what spokeswoman Carrie Adamowski says was "court-authorized activity." It's not clear why the agents were there. Adamowski declined to further comment.

WNEP reports that FBI agents removed two boxes from the city's licensing, inspections and permits department.

Mayor Bill Courtright referred questions about the FBI raid to city's solicitor Jessica Eskra. She declined comment to The Associated Press on Friday. City council members, meantime, are calling on the mayor to provide information. Courtright, a Democrat, is serving his second term as mayor of the city of about 77,000.
