Hacked Emails Link Turkish Minister to Illicit Oi
In late September, a Turkish hacker group, RedHack, released the emails of Berat Albayrak, Turkey's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and the soninlaw of President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an. Hackers have claimed that they downloaded around 20 gigabytes of data from Albayrak's email accounts. As the group started to release the emails through social media, controversial issues have been brought to the surface once again. The Turkish government was quick to react, immediately issuing a court order prohibiting the release of the hacked emails and their publication in the media. The issuance of the court order, however, lends credence to the authenticity of the leaked emails. One of the most contentious issues uncovered with the leaked email communications and documents was the transfer of oil controlled by the so called Islamic State and the Erdo?an family's involvement via a company named Powertrans.

Erdogan Accepts Resignation of Turkish Finance Minister
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accepted the resignation of Finance Minister Berat Albayrak, the Turkish leader's office said in a statement.
The announcement of the resignation of Albayrak, who is Erdogan's son-in-law, due to health problems appeared on Sunday on the minister's Instagram amid a record depreciation of the Turkish lira.
"Berat Albayrak spread a message on social networks on November 8 about his resignation for health reasons. Our president considered this application and accepted the minister's resignation," the statement says.

?At the same time, Erdogan noted that thanks to the efforts of Albayrak, Turkey passed the period of the coronavirus pandemic with minimal losses, it says.
Erdogan replaced the head of Turkey's central bank on Saturday after the Turkish lira depreciated from 7.45 to 8.55 per US dollar over the past two months. Murat Uysal was replaced in this post by Naci Agbal.
The Turkish lira hit a new all-time low ahead of the announcement of the results of the US presidential election. Analysts believe that relations between Ankara and Washington could worsen if Democratic candidate Joe Biden wins.
Earlier, the fall of the Turkish lira was associated with the military conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, the strong earthquake in Izmir and the economic crisis in Turkey amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Turkish finance minister resigns in second surprise departure after lira slide
Turkish Finance Minister Berat Albayrak said on Sunday he was resigning for health reasons, the second surprise departure of a top economic policymaker in two days after the central bank chief was ousted. The upheaval follows a 30% slide in the lira to record lows this year amid the coronavirus pandemic as investors worried about falling forex reserves and the central bank's ability to tackle double-digit inflation.
Albayrak's resignation, announced in an Instagram statement confirmed by an official, came a day after father-in-law President Tayyip Erdogan replaced the central bank governor with a former minister whose policies are seen to be at odds with Albayrak. "I have decided that I cannot continue as a minister, which I have been carrying out for nearly five years, due to health problems," the statement said. Albayrak became finance minister two years ago after serving as energy minister.
Two sources at the presidency could neither confirm nor deny the statement when reached by Reuters, but a Finance Ministry official confirmed its authenticity. Albayrak, 42, was appointed energy minister in 2015 and shifted to finance after Erdogan was re-elected with sweeping new executive powers in 2018.
During his tenure at finance, Turkey's economy was hit by two bad slumps, double-digit inflation and high unemployment. The lira has lost around 45% against the U.S. dollar since his appointment and is the worst performer in emerging markets this year.

Turkey In Turmoil: Finance Minister Resigns Days After Central Bank Head Fired
Turkey is bracing for a full-blown financial and economic crisis, after the country Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak, who is also Erdogan's son-in-law, unexpectedly resigned on Sunday citing health reasons, according to a statement on his Instagram account in which he said he would devote time to his family after stepping down.
"I decided not to continue my duty as a minister after five years in office due to health reasons," Albayrak's statement read. "I'll spend my time with my mother, father, wife and kids, whom I have neglected for many years out of necessity."
According to Bloomberg, Turkey's treasury ministry confirmed Albayrak's bizarre resignation.
Albayrak has been in cabinet since 2015, when he served as the minister of energy (covering the period when Turkey was allegedly importing oil from ISIS in Syria) until he took over the government's top economy position in 2018.
The resignation of Turkey's top finance professional follows just a day after late on Friday president Erdgoan unexpectedly fired the country's central bank head, Murat Uysal, who was appointed by Erdogan in July 2019 with a clear mandate to cut rates despite the country's soaring inflation. And cut rates he did, slashing the official rate by 16 points from 24% to 8%, before having no option but to hike rates in September…

'This is not a colony!' Ankara snaps at Washington over threat that US pharma may exit Turkey if it fails to repay $2.3bn debt
US Ambassador David Satterfield is treating Turkey like a colony, Ankara's health minister Fahrettin Koca said, commenting on the escalating row over the skyrocketing debt Turkey owes to American drug companies.
"What the ambassador did is neither correct nor ethical. He is using manipulation at a time when we are holding talks with drug companies. He may be able to do such acts in colonies, but this is not such a country," Koca told reporters on Friday, while visiting the Black Sea province of Samsun.
Koca was referring to the "extremely unfortunate" comments by the US envoy during a trade conference on Wednesday, when Satterfield warned that American pharmaceutical companies "will consider departing the Turkish market or will reduce exposure to Turkish market," over the outstanding debt - which ballooned from $230 million last year to some $2.3 billion currently.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak assured US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross that prompt payments will be arranged when Ross raised the issue in 2019, Sutterfied said. Now, however, Turkey is asking US companies to accept significantly reduced repayments. This is unacceptable to Washington, he said.
Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu lashed out at Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) earlier on Friday, criticizing her "blatant ignorance" and threatening that she will "learn to respect the Turkish people's will."

In early 2017, it had been revealed that Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn - who was forced to resign on February 13 that year over undeclared contacts with Russia's ambassador to the U.S. - had been secretly hired as an undeclared foreign agent by Erdo?an's government.
American federal prosecutors have since indicted a Turkish-Dutch businessman, Ekim Alptekin, over his alleged role in the scheme, which involved funneling over $500,000 in Turkish government money to Flynn's consultancy. Prosecutors allege the scheme was directed by two Turkish ministers. Lobbying documents show they were Foreign Minister Çavu?o?lu and Erdo?an's son-in-law, Berat Albayrak, who at the time was energy minister.
As part of that effort, Flynn and those same Turkish figures also discussed kidnapping Erdogan's cleric rival, Gülen, from his home in Pennsylvania and "whisking" him to Turkey to face charges, former C.I.A. Director Michael Woolsey, who was at the September 2016 meeting, told the Wall Street Journal. Flynn has denied the report.
In a meeting on September 20, 2016, Woolsey, then also a Trump campaign adviser, said he met Alptekin and his close associate, Sezgin Baran Korkmaz, to unsuccessfully pitch his own $10-million plan to help Turkey by discrediting Gülen.

At the Atlantic Council, Foreign Money Talks
Sources tell the Washington Free Beacon that foreign governments exert pressure on the ostensibly independent think tank's scholarship and programming
When Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan's bodyguards were arrested after attacking a crowd of protesters outside the Turkish ambassador's residence in May 2017, Erdogan and his crew were heading inside for a private, off-the-record meeting with Atlantic Council fellows and board members.
That event is just one example of the close relationship between the Washington, D.C., think tank and the Erdogan government.
Starting in 2008, the Atlantic Council hosted an "Istanbul Summit" bankrolled by several business conglomerates closely aligned with Erdogan's Justice and Development party, including the state-owned Halkbank, which has been accused of evading U.S. sanctions on Iran. Calik Holding, another conference sponsor and current Atlantic Council donor, is a Turkish business giant that was until late 2013 led by Erdogan's son-in-law, Berat Albayrak.
Calik acquired the once-reputable Turkish newspaper Sabah in 2008 and, according to Steven Cook, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, turned it into "a wild mouthpiece of the Erdogan government."
The Turks have tried to do the same with the Atlantic Council, sources say, routinely objecting to the panelists-and even guests-participating in the organization's Turkey events because their views did not align with those of the Erdogan government.
In 2018, the Atlantic Council moved the annual conference, now known as the Global Energy Forum, to Abu Dhabi because, according to a source familiar with the conference's operations, Erdogan's son-in-law "was basically the shadow organizer of the event."
A spokesman for the Atlantic Council, Alex Kisling, said that the move to Abu Dhabi had nothing to do with the efforts of Turkish officials to influence programming and that the organization "receives support from a diverse set of organizations, including Calik Holding, which has a significant global footprint."

Disobedient Media asked Chris for his thoughts on the crossover between key figures in the Mifsud arm of the Trump-Russia collusion debacle and the likely fabrication of the "Russian Hacking" narrative allegedly engineered by CrowdStrike.
Chris Blackburn: "Buzzfeed reported that the Guardia Di Finanza officers, Italy's anti-corruption and organized crime agency, are looking for Mifsud for possible financial crimes. Mifsud helped train Guardia Di Finanza officers at LINK Campus in Rome. The FBI's Eurasian Crime and Cyber Security officers also help with the training, running courses at LINK Campus. CrowdStrike, the DNC cyber-security team, employ senior leaders who are former FBI trainers and researchers that are alumni of LINK Campus in Rome."
Blackburn also took to Twitter, discussing the fact that figures at CrowdStrike have been associated with LINK Campus as well as with the FBI. Specifically, according to ICANN, Andrew Bagley has served as Privacy Counsel for CrowdStrike since 2015. He also attended LINK Campus in Rome in 2010 as a visiting researcher. Finally, Bagley worked with the FBI as an "E-Discovery Technical Advisor," echoing the connection between a number of prominent figures at CrowdStrike and the agency.

The Atlantic Council has released a number of glowing reviews of Soros' "philanthropic" work and proudly lists a jaw-dropping number of various special interest groups, government agencies, foreign governments and well connected, wealthy individual patrons among its donors. Highlights include the foundation of Ukranian oligarch Victor Pinchuk, The Open Society Foundation, the United Arab Emirates, Bahaa Hariri, the billionaire brother of Lebanese prime minister Saad Hariri, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Inc., NATO, the United States Department of State, and Lockheed Martin Corporation. A donor list from 2015 also names the Turkish Ministry of Energy & National Resources, whose head Berat Albayrak was the subject of leaks released by publishing giant Wikileaks exposing increasing political oppression in Turkey and the involvement of the Ministry in providing material support to the terror group ISIS.
The Brookings Institution's Contributor List also mentions many of the same donors who fund the Atlantic Council. Common supporters include Victor Pinchuk, The Open Society Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation, Lockheed Martin Corporation and The Boeing Company. Brookings has also played a central role in helping to stoke the flames of the "Russiagate" story. Its staff includes Benjamin Wittes, a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution who admitted to leaking information given to him by James Comey about President Donald Trump to the New York Times.
The heavy emphasis placed on narrative pushing by the Atlantic Council and Brookings Institution is hardly surprising and has only intensified in 2018. In May 2018, a panel convened by the Council on Foreign Relations openly endorsed the use of propaganda on Western populations to combat what they claim to be "disinformation and fake news."

Qatar Paid for Congressional Democrats' Doha Trip
Note: This post has been updated to correct the name of the Al Udeid Air Base.
Qatar's Washington embassy paid for six congressional Democrats to visit Doha last December, Al-Monitor reported Friday. U.S. Reps. Ami Bera, D-Calif., Andre Carson, D-Ind., and Dan Kildee, D-Mich., noted the payment in financial disclosure forms.
The office of U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross, D-N.J., told Al-Monitor it would amend its disclosure form to include the Qatari payment. U.S. Rep. James Himes, D-Conn., failed to disclose the trip. Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., received an extension until August to file his disclosure. Ben Smith of Buzzfeed, which co-sponsored the Doha Forum first acknowledged the trip in a Dec. 15 tweet.
Speakers at the Doha Forum included President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's son-in-law, and current Turkish Finance Minister Berat Albayrak; Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif; and Mutlaq al-Qahtani, who told the Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT) last year that Hamas was not a terrorist organization. Al-Qahtani serves as Qatar's counterterrorism envoy.
Carson and Himes sit on the House Intelligence Committee. Bera serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Norcross is on to the House Armed Services Committee.
At the forum, the officials met with Qatar's deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs. Qatar hosts the Al Udeid Air Base, which is home to the forward headquarters of U.S. Central Command and the headquarters of the U.S. Air Force Central Command.

Turkish finance minister hopes damage to economy from currency crisis will be short-lived
ISTANBUL (Reuters) - The Turkish economy will hopefully overcome the impacts of a currency crisis last year with just two quarters of contraction, Turkey's Finance Minister Berat Albayrak said on Sunday.
Speaking to broadcaster CNN Turk, Albayrak referred to Turkey's performance during the 2008 global financial crisis when the economy contracted for four consecutive quarters.
"Turkey will get over this period hopefully with two quarters (of contraction) and with minimum negative impact," Albayrak said.
"The first quarter data year-on-year and when compared to last quarter, technically rebalancing, recovery process will extend more than two quarters."
The Turkish economy contracted 3.0 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2018, after a currency crisis knocked some 30 percent off the value of the lira last year. Economists expect two more quarters of contraction year-on-year.
The lira has lost as much as 15 percent against the dollar this year, with the latest weakness driven by investor concerns over Monday's decision to re-run a mayoral election in Istanbul that had been narrowly won by the main opposition party.
Turkey's central bank moved to tighten policy by funding the market through a higher rate and took additional liquidity steps, while state banks sold dollars to boost the local currency.
Albayrak said Turkish inflation and employment will improve this year, while the government will implement necessary reforms without hesitation.
"Turkey, especially inflation and employment, will reach a better, more balanced place till the end of 2019," Albayrak said.
The meeting between the finance minister and U.S. President Donald Trump was constructive, hopeful and positive, Albayrak said, adding that Trump will most probably pay a visit to Turkey in July.

Turkish Lira Tumbles On Soaring Unemployment, "Absolute Shitshow" Investor Meeting
The collapse in the Turkish lira is accelerating this morning, with the USDTRY rising above 5.80 for the first time since last October and CDS pushing to September highs, as the Turkish economy continues to slide ever deeper into recession, with the country on Monday reporting that a whopping 366,000 people became unemployed in the last month, sending the country's jobless rate to the highest level in a decade.
With Ankara trapped, unwilling to let the lira devalue on fears of capital outflows even as inflation surges while the economy is urgently in need of a weaker currency, unemployment rose far more than forecast, rising to 14.7% in January - the highest since 2009…
… from 13.5% a month earlier, according to Turkstat data; the number of people without jobs has reached 4.7 million people, with youth unemployment jumping to 26.7%, the highest on record.
As Bloomberg summarizes "the severity of the job losses despite a last-ditch spending blitz by the government underscores the economic challenges facing Turkey after it entered its first recession in a decade following a currency rout last year that touched off inflation."
The most recent dismal economic data comes at a time when Erdogan's undisputed control over Turkey appears to be slipping following the recent local elections, where many of the municipalities won by the opposition from the ruling party were those where unemployment is running in double digits, official data show. As such, the political headache for the "executive president" is only set to grow as the country finds itself deeper and deeper in what is rapidly developing as a full-blown economic depression.
Meanwhile, investors were also concerned by ongoing speculation that the ruling AKP will challenge the Istanbul election outcome which saw Turkey's most important city flip control to the opposition, after Erdogan's candidate lost the mayoral race in Turkey's largest city to Ekrem Imamoglu, a blow for Islamists who had controlled Istanbul since 1994. "We are going to ask for fresh elections in Istanbul by using our right to make an extraordinary objection," said Ali Ihsan Yavuz, a deputy head of the AKP.
Erdogan's refusal to concede defeat in Turkey's commercial hub has been condemned by political opponents as an attack on Turkey's democratic foundations. Among the vocal critics of the AKP's reaction to losses at the ballot box was Mustafa Sonmez, an economist known for opposing the government's policies.
Sonmez was detained on Sunday and later released after being questioned largely over his tweets over his tweets following the vote, according to his lawyer, Husniye Aydin. In his latest posts on Twitter, Sonmez criticized authorities for not recognizing the opposition's candidate as the winner of Istanbul's mayoral race.
Making matters worse for Lira bulls, there is little hope for any near-term turnaround: "The rise in unemployment will continue - albeit at a slowing pace," said Muammer Komurcuoglu, an Istanbul-based economist at IS Investment. "A sharp monthly deterioration in job creation continues to take place across all the sub-sectors. We are seeing very clearly the impact of the economic slowdown on unemployment."
But beside the collapsing Turkish economy, which was to be largely expected following last summer's financial crisis, what has mostly spooked investors is that even as Turkey rolled out a recapitalization plan for state banks, the program unveiled by Treasury & Finance Minister Berat Albayrak last week has underwhelmed investors.
In fact, as Axios reports, Turkish Finance Minister Berat Albayrak - Erdogan's son-in-law who replaced 2 highly respected ministers, despite having virtually no qualifications - held a closed-door meeting with hundreds of investors during the IMF-World Bank meetings in Washington last week, "and some who attended called it the worst they've ever had with a high-ranking government official."
"It was an absolute shit show," one emerging market fund manager who attended the meeting told Axios. "I've literally never seen someone from an administration that unprepared," another investor said.

Turkey's Erdogan meets with Kushner to discuss Mideast peace
Trump adviser discusses 'economic and regional issues' with Turkish leader amid whirlwind tour of Arab, Muslim countries
ANKARA - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday met with US President Donald Trump's adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner during the American official's regional tour to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Erdogan regards himself as a champion of the Palestinians and Turkey has often been vocal in its criticism of the Israeli government and Washington, especially after Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and moved the US embassy there last year.
Erdogan said late Tuesday that the two men would discuss "economic and regional issues" at the meeting at the presidential palace in Ankara, although neither side said Syria was on the agenda.
The men were joined by Erdogan's son-in-law and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak, according to Turkish presidency images.
Kushner's visit follows from Trump's shock announcement in December - welcomed by Ankara - that he would withdraw 2,000 American ground troops from northern Syria.
Ankara has called for a "safe zone" controlled by Turkish forces to be a buffer area against the US-backed Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia.
Trump last week indicated that a few hundred "peacekeeping" troops would remain in Syria despite intentions to withdraw by April 30.
There have been tensions between Washington and Ankara over US support to the YPG which has spearheaded the West's fight against the Islamic State group.
Other issues remain between the NATO allies including the US failure to extradite the Pennsylvania-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen who Turkey claims orchestrated the 2016 failed overthrow of Erdogan. Gulen strongly denies the accusations.
Kushner and Jason Greenblatt, the US Middle East peace envoy, met officials from the United Arab Emirates and Oman on Monday alongside Brian Hook, the US special representative for Iran. The officials were in Bahrain on Tuesday.
Kushner at a conference in Warsaw earlier this month presented Washington's plans for a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians to be formally presented after Israeli elections in April.
On Wednesday The New York Times reported that the peace plan may include a call for investments of tens of billions of dollars to the Palestinians and other countries in the region.
The Times, citing unidentified analysts with knowledge of the matter, said the funds would include around $25 billion for the West Bank and Gaza and another $40 billion for Israeli neighbors including Egypt, Jordan and possibly Lebanon. The paper noted that other sources who had spoken to Kushner said the figures were not necessarily accurate, but confirmed that the investments would be in the tens of billions.
Kushner is reportedly seeking to persuade Middle East leaders to get behind those proposals as he tours the region

Turkish president holds talks with Jared Kushner
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Turkish officials say President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is meeting with Jared Kushner for talks that are expected to center on his planned Mideast peace initiative.
Erdogan's office confirmed Wednesday that the meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump's adviser and son-in-law is underway. Economy Minister Berat Albayrak, who is Erdogan's son-in-law, was also present.
Details of Kushner's plan will be unveiled after the April 9 Israeli election.
He said however, that it will address all "final status" issues, including borders, and require compromises by all sides. He made no mention of establishing a Palestinian state and said the plan would focus heavily on offering economic "opportunities" to the Palestinians.
Kushner's comments about his initiative have received a cool reception from Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

In regards to the Pastor Brunson discussion - from Wikipedia:
In March 2017, former CIA Director James Woolsey told the Wall Street Journal that he had been at a September 19, 2016 meeting with then Trump campaign advisor Mike Flynn with Turkey's foreign minister, Mevlüt Çavu?o?lu, and energy minister, Berat Albayrak, where the possibility of Gulen's abduction and forced rendition to Turkey was discussed.[112][113] Although no concrete kidnapping plan was discussed, Woolsey left the meeting, concerned that a general discussion about "a covert step in the dead of night to whisk this guy away" might be construed as illegal under American law.[114] A spokesman for Flynn denied Woolsey's account, telling Business Insider that no nonjudicial removal had been discussed at the meeting.[115]

Thanks, but no thanks: Turkey rejects future loans from IMF
Ankara will no longer borrow money from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
"Turkey's economic indicators are at a very good level compared to other countries," Erdogan told his AK Party on Sunday, adding that the IMF chapter in the country has been closed for good.
Last week, Erdogan's government was criticized by opposition party CHP for the hiring services of international consultancy firm McKinsey to estimate the Turkish economy every three quarters. The opposition says it shows a lack of confidence in the country's economy.
"We undertook a debt of $23.5 billion when we took office. We paid off the debt in 2013. Aren't we the ones who saved this country from the IMF yoke?" Erdogan said on Sunday, referring to the criticism.
Turkey's lira has lost around 40 percent of its value this year, while inflation is above the central bank's rate of 24 percent.
"Inflation was really a disappointment on all fronts. Real rates are now slightly negative, so the massive September rate hike has been completely offset," Guillaume Tresca, senior emerging market strategist at Credit Agricole, said, as quoted by Reuters.
However, Turkey remains a country with low debt levels. Turkey's 28 percent public debt and 16 percent household debt-to-GDP ratios are both roughly half the developing country average, Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak said on Sunday.

Germany, Qatar vow support for Turkey amid US pressure
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani have expressed support for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan amid escalated tensions between Ankara and Washington.
In a Wednesday phone conversation with Erdogan, the German chancellor expressed her country's commitment to strengthening its cooperation with Turkey through reciprocal visits at the highest levels, Turkey's Anadolu Agency quoted presidential sources as saying.
The two sides discussed Erdogan's upcoming visit to Berlin slated for late September, and a meeting between Turkey's Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak and Germany's Economy Minister Peter Altmaier, due to be held in coming days.
According to the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, Merkel also underlined her country's concern for a strong Turkish economy, repeating her Monday comments that Turkey's economic prosperity "serves Germany's interests".
Her remarks come as US President Donald Trump's punitive measures against Turkey have pushed its lira into freefall and sent shudders through its financial markets.

Pompeo Says Row With Turkey Over Arrested Pastor to Be Resolved in 'Coming Days'
The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Reuters on Saturday that the United States has every intention of working cooperatively with Turkey and that he hoped the issue of Americans detained in Turkey could be resolved very soon.
According to Reuters, asked if the issue of the arrested US Pastor threatened Turkey's membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Pompeo said that "Turkey is a NATO partner with whom the United States has every intention to continue to work with cooperatively," adding that the issue of Andrew Brunson and other US Citizens detained in turkey, would be resolved "in the coming days."
US State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said that Mike Pompeo and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu have agreed to keep trying to resolve the issues between Washington and Ankara.
"They spoke about a number of issues, and had a constructive conversation," Nauert said n a readout after a meeting between the senior diplomats in Singapore on Friday, adding that "They agreed to continue to try to resolve the issues between our two countries."
The meeting between Pompeo and Cavusoglu comes just days after the United States introduced new sanctions against senior Turkish officials over the ongoing detention of American pastor Andrew Brunson.
On Wednesday, the United States announced that it was imposing sanctions on Turkey's Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul and Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu for their leading roles in Brunson's imprisonment, as well as alleged human rights abuses committed by Turkish state agencies. The US sanctions will freeze the two ministers' assets abroad and prohibit US citizens from engaging in any transactions with them.
Turkish officials including Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak have slammed the US actions.
Turkey jailed Brunson about two years ago for his alleged ties to the movement founded by Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara has accused of orchestrating the 2016 failed military coup.
The US pastor was released from a Turkish prison last week and placed under house arrest.

Q has mentioned foreign agents in our govt.
The people being monitored by our intelligence agency most likely are considered foreign agents under our law and warrants were issued under same FISA JUDGES that issued one for Carter Page. Trump is using their own weapon against them. And to think it must be renewed every 90 days with new info.
