Tunisia president Essebsi dies at 92

Essebsi died at 10.25 this morning at the military hospital in Tunisia where he was admitted after his health deteriorated.

The Presidency of the Republic of Tunisia today announced the death of President Beji Caid Essebsi.

In a statement on Facebook the office said that Essebsi died at 10.25 this morning at the military hospital in Tunisia where he was admitted after his health deteriorated.

Details of the burial would be announced later, it continued.

Essebsi was taken to the military hospital late last night "after an emergency health issue", local media reported.

His son, Hafez Caid Essebsi, said: "The president was transferred to the military hospital due to an emergency health problem caused by the residues of food poisoning that he suffered over the last period."

On Monday Essebsi appeared in video footage posted by the presidency for the first time in two weeks, following reports that his health had deteriorated.

The 92-year-old could be seen in his office at the presidential palace with the defence minister. He appeared to be suffering from health problems and he did not make a statement.

Essebsi won Tunisia's first free elections in 2014 following Arab uprisings across the region.

The speaker of parliament, Mohamed Ennaceur, said he would become the temporary president, in line with the constitution.

The next presidential election, set for 17 November, will now be held earlier, the electoral commission chief said, without elaborating. A parliamentary vote is set for 6 October.

Tunisia's First Democratically Elected President Has Died
Beji Caid Essebsi played a major role in shaping Tunisia's future after the 2010-2011 revolution
Mr. Essebsi, who was 92, bridged two eras in Tunisian history, serving first as a senior officer in the autocratic regimes of the 1950s and playing a major role in shaping Tunisia's future after the 2010-2011 revolution, outflanking Islamist rivals. He was elected to the presidency in 2014.

He died at the Tunis Military Hospital, his office said in a brief statement. It didn't specify the cause of death. The president was briefly hospitalized in June, prompting public speculation over his health.

The speaker of Tunisia's parliament, Mohamed Ennaceur, is set to be sworn in as interim president.

Born to an elite family in Sidi Bou Said city in 1926, Mr. Essebsi's political career started in 1941 with the Neo Dostour Youth, where he acted as a lawyer for the organization's activists. He became an adviser to Mr. Bouguiba in 1956, following Tunisia's independence from France.

Between the late 1950s through the 1970s he served as a security official, becoming minister of interior from 1965 to 1969 and minister of defense from then until 1970. He served as foreign minister from 1981 to 1986 and as prime minister from February to December 2011.

After defeating his rival candidate, Islamist Moncef Marzouki, in 2014's presidential elections, Mr. Essebsi promised to restore political and economic stability to the country as it transitioned to democratic rule.As president, he pursued legal reforms to modernize Tunisia's political and social systems and lay the foundation for the country's nascent constitutional democracy. He introduced laws allowing women to be able to marry non-Muslims and equal inheritance with men that sparked controversy among traditional Arab Muslim scholars inside and outside Tunisia.

An opponent of political Islam, he joined with the Islamist Ennahdha party to help lead Tunisia out of the tumult of the Arab Spring.

"President Essebsi was a true patriot and a pillar of Tunisia's democratic transition," Rached Ghannouchi, president of Ennahdha, said in a statement. "He would have wanted all Tunisians to uphold the Constitution and rule of law and to maintain our democratic path, no matter what challenges we face."

Tunisia's President Beji Caid Essebsi has been rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

The 92-year-old was rushed to a military hospital in the Tunisian capital Tunis earlier this afternoon after falling "seriously ill". Though some media outlets reported that the president had died, Essebsi's aide Firas Guefrech warned in a tweet not to be "misled by rumours".

Tunisia's Prime Minister, Youssef Chahed, added in a Facebook post that Essebsi is currently "receiving all the necessary attention he needs" in hospital.

This came just hours after Tunis was hit by a twin suicide attack, leaving scores wounded and at least one dead. The attack - responsibility for which has not yet been claimed by any individual or group - appeared to have targeted Tunisian security forces, hitting a police patrol and officers stationed outside the Tunisian government's anti-terrorism brigade headquarters in the city's Al-Qarjani district.

The president was previously hospitalised on Friday over health concerns, but was discharged the next day. He recently announced that he would not run in Tunisia's upcoming elections in November, saying someone younger should lead the country.

Essebsi became Tunisia's first democratically elected president in 2014, having founded the Nidaa Tounes party in 2012 in the wake of the Jasmine Revolution, which has since been seen as the spark for the Arab Spring.

He has boasted a long political career, having been appointed interior minister by Tunisia's first post-independence president, Habib Bourguiba, in 1965.

It is understood that if anything were to happen to the president, the speaker of Tunisia's parliament, Mohamed Ennaceur, will take over his duties until elections are held.

Arab leaders to seek U.N. Security Council resolution on Golan

TUNIS (Reuters) - Arab leaders said on Sunday they would seek a U.N. Security Council resolution against the U.S. decision to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights and promised to support Palestinians in their bid for statehood. Arab leaders, long divided by regional rivalries, also ended their annual summit in Tunisia calling for cooperation with non-Arab Iran based on non-interference in each others' affairs.

Arab leaders who have been grappling with a bitter Gulf Arab dispute, splits over Iran's regional influence, the war in Yemen and unrest in Algeria and Sudan sought common ground after Washington recognized Israel's sovereignty over the Golan. But the abrupt departure from the summit shortly after it began by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, who is locked in a row with Saudi Arabia and other Arab states, suggested rivalries were not easily buried. No reason was given for his departure. "We, the leaders of the Arab countries gathered in Tunisia … express our rejection and condemnation of the United States decision to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan," Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said. He said Arab countries would present a draft resolution to the U.N. Security Council and seek a legal opinion from the International Court of Justice on the U.S. decision. It warned other countries away from following Washington's lead.

Trump signed a proclamation last week recognizing the Golan Heights as part of Israel, which annexed the area in 1981 after capturing it from Syria in 1967. Trump's earlier decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital also drew Arab condemnation. Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of a future state. Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz told the Arab leaders his country "absolutely rejects" any measures affecting Syria's sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi said Arab nations needed to ensure the international community understood the centrality of the Palestinian cause to Arab nations. In their final communique, Arab states renewed support for an Arab peace initiative that offers Israel peace in exchange for withdrawal from all lands occupied in the 1967 war and said they would seek to revive peace talks with the Jewish state. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who also addressed the meeting in Tunis, said any resolution to the Syrian conflict must guarantee the territorial integrity of Syria "including the occupied Golan Heights"

Arab Leaders Reject Trump's Decision to Recognize Israel Authority on Golan Heights

Rabat - Arab world leaders have reiterated their denouncement of the US President's decision to recognize Israeli authority over the Golan Heights.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967. It annexed the territory in 1981 and has since maintained control over it.

In Tunis during the 30th Arab League summit, Arab leaders convening in the symposium expressed their full support for the Palestinian cause.

Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi said that "it is unreasonable for the Arab region to continue to be at the forefront of tensions and crisis."
In addition to King Salman, Egypt's Abdelfattah Al Sissi also condemned the move.

Commenting on the decision, King Salman of Saudi Arabia said: "We reiterate our categorical rejection of measures that would undermine Syrian sovereignty over the Golan."
However, political observers said that Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries, including UAE, would do little to protect the rights of Palestinians due to their close diplomatic ties with Trump's administration.

Political analyst at Qatar University Majed al-Ansari told Al Jazeera that "there is very little intention to come up with very clear outcomes other than the usual discourse of establishing Palestine right and the general Arab stance on regional issues."
On March 28, King Mohammed VI and King Abdullah II of Jordan condemned Trump's actions.

The two monarchs maintained that the Golan Heights is Syrian land. Israel's decision, they said, violates international law.
The two Kings also reiterated unwavering support to the Palestinian cause, emphasizing the importance of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Russian PM outlines Russia's position on providing unity in Libya

Medvedev is currently on his visit to Italy to take part in the international conference on Libya

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and other participants of the international conference on Libya held a preliminary meeting ahead of the plenary session, at which they shared their views on the settlement of the situation in this country. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told reporters that the meeting lasted more than two hours.

"Each participant outlined his country's approach (to the settlement of the crisis,) Dmitry Medvedev outlined Russia's position on the way unity in the country should be provided," the diplomat said.

"Head of Libya's Government of National Accord Fayez al-Sarraj and commander of the Libyan National Army Khalifa Haftar took part in this meeting," he said.

The negotiations were also attended by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, President of Tunisia Beji Caid Essebsi, France's Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian and President of the European Council Donald Tusk.
