Five Things You Need to Know to Start Your Day: Europe
Get up to speed with what the markets are monitoring
Gold continues its record-breaking rally, policymakers struggle with the strong US dollar, and Apple's next big thing. Here's what people are talking about.
Gold Shines
Gold continues to outshine, mainly thanks to Jerome Powell's assurance on Wednesday that the Federal Reserve will likely cut interest rates this year. The precious metal hit a fresh record high above $2,300 an ounce. And it's not just gold. Copper rose to a 14-month high while US equity futures also edged higher in Asian trading. For further clues on the rate trajectory in the US, traders will be switching their focus to jobs data stateside due later this week.
Currency Angst
Global policymakers may also have been relieved to see Powell sticking with projections for rate cuts. Central bankers and government officials have been stepping in to defend exchange rates as a resilient American economy keeps the dollar strong. The greenback has gained against virtually every major peer in 2024.
Apple's Robotics
Personal robots! That may be Apple's answer to the burning question of where it can find new sources of revenue. The company has teams investigating a push into the sector, according to people familiar with the situation. Apple is under growing pressure after scrapping an electric vehicle project in February. With robotics, it could gain a bigger foothold in consumers' homes and capitalize on advances in artificial intelligence. Speaking of AI, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the automaker has been boosting pay for AI engineers as it faces a war over talent.
Aviva Down Under
London-based asset manager Aviva Investors is tapping Australia's pension funds to partner in private deals in the UK and Europe, as the surging pool of retirement savings lures more offshore suitors. The firm, which manages 262 billion euros ($284 billion) of assets globally, has been talking to some funds about co-investments in logistics centers and residential developments, said Head of Real Asset Equity Specialists Tom Graham. Some of Australia's largest pension funds have already made big inroads into the UK and European markets.
Taiwan Recovers
Taiwan begins to recover from its worst earthquake in 25 years. The island's semiconductor industry restarted operations and emergency personnel worked to help the injured. Nine people were killed and more than 100 remain trapped. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, the leading producer of advanced chips for Apple and Nvidia, said it would resume production less than 24 hours after evacuating staff and halting operations. The company said there has been no damage to its most critical chip-making equipment.
Coming up...
European equity futures are steady as traders await further clues about the monetary policy trajectory in the region from the European Central Bank's account of its March rate decision. Also due are a slew of PMI data across Europe including Germany and the UK, along with Riksbank's minutes. In the US, several Fed officials speak including Patrick Harker, Thomas Barkin and Austan Goolsbee.

This caught my eye yesterday: in the competitive world of hedge funds, it looks like the most traditional of the lot are coming back into favor. Equity long-short strategies where managers pick stocks rather than pursue a broader macro thesis based on the economy, or bet on events like M&A happening attracted $1.5 billion in net inflows in February. That's the first positive reading in 24 months.

COVID handouts
As President of the European Central Bank, spent at least ?1,850 billion on an asset purchase program during COVID-19.[185] "If we don't vaccinate the whole world, it will come back to haunt us and hurt us in the form of new variants."[186]
Gordon Brown - 1991 - In April 2021, promoted a $60 billion effort to increase vaccination in "poor countries".[187] Appointed WHO ambassador for global health financing in September 2021.[188]
Elisa Ferreira- 2002 - Appointed European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms in December 2019 by Ursula von der Leyen, in charge of smaller EU handouts,[189] and on committees deciding about REACT-EU: "The additional European cohesion fund of ?47 billion makes an important contribution towards rebuilding after the crisis. We need coherent and long-term strategies which rapidly trigger the green and digital transition and which are adapted to the local needs and potential." [190]
Luis Garicano - 2016 - In March 2020, proposed a ?500 billion "bazooka" to fight the virus, stabilise the European economy, and protect its jobs while the economy is in the "freezer".[191]
Kristalina Georgieva - 2016 - As IMF managing director organised "emergency financing on a scale [and at a speed] never seen before" [192] - issuing dire economic forecasts [193]

Stephen Poloz - 2014 - Took over from Mark Carney as Governor of the Bank of Canada. In late March 2020, announced a minimum $5-billion-per-week of market purchases of Government of Canada bonds, "to address strains in the government of Canada debt market and to enhance the effectiveness of all other actions taken so far." [200] "We have taken several actions to unclog key lending channels, adding over $200 billion of liquidity, or around 10% of Canadian GDP. As I said recently, no one has ever criticized a firefighter for using too much water. When the system demands more liquidity, the central bank must provide it."[201]

UBS investor eyes Morgan Stanley
Stockholm-based Cevian Capital is making a ?1.2 billion bet on UBS, saying it's confident the bank can successfully integrate Credit Suisse and double its share price over the next two to three years. "We think UBS should at least be valued on a par with Morgan Stanley," Cevian co-founder Lars F?rberg told Bloomberg Television earlier today after his firm announced it has built up a stake of about 1.3% in the Swiss bank. UBS's valuation has trailed that of Wall Street's titans, and Chairman Colm Kelleher has made little secret that he thinks it should be higher-as high, perhaps, as that of Morgan Stanley, where the Irishman spent most of his career. But rivals like Morgan Stanley have much bigger client networks and bigger investment banks to craft whizzy financial products for them, and US banks have historically commanded a valuation premium over their European counterparts. UBS shares rose as much as 2.7% earlier.
Japan's negative rates
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda decided to keep interest rates in negative territory - where the policy rate has been since 2016. Ueda appeared determined to keep his options open at a press briefing: he said there was little data for his team to assess before they next meet to decide on rates in January, but he didn't rule out a hike entirely either. He also said it was too early to give specific details on any exit plans. The yen extended its decline in choppy trading as Ueda spoke, dropping more than 1% against the dollar. The Japanese currency had turned into one of the world's favorite macro trades in recent weeks after a comment from Ueda and one of his deputies sparked speculation of an exit from sub-zero rates as early as this month. The view subsided after people familiar with the matter told my colleagues in Tokyo that the central bank was in no rush - though bets this will happen in 2024 are still very much on.
Coming up...
We're due data on US housing starts and permit issuance in November, with economists expecting a slight deterioration. There are three central bank speakers on the cards today: Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic is set to speak on the US economy, the outlook for business, and the Fed's role at a fireside chat at the Harvard Business School Club of Atlanta Alumni Leadership Lunch. Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin is scheduled to appear on Yahoo Finance, while Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee will be interviewed by Fox News.

With rates having come down substantially over the past month and a half, a big question is what it will it mean for housing. According to Freddie Mac, a 30-year fixed rate mortgage is now under 7%.
Of course a mortgage in the 6s would have seemed extremely high even a year ago, but in the current environment it seems plausible that some would-be homebuyers might dip their toe in the water.
Yesterday we got the latest reading of the NAHB sentiment index and it showed that for the first time in 5 months, homebuilder sentiment ticked up (though it remains at extremely depressed levels).

Trump Fed Appointees Withheld Vote on Obama Aide for Chicago Fed
Two of the Federal Reserve board's seven governors abstained from supporting the selection of former Obama aide Austan Goolsbee to become president of the Chicago Fed, according to a record of the vote.
Governors Michelle Bowman and Christopher Waller, who were both appointed to the board by former President Donald Trump, withheld their support for Goolsbee, who took up his post last month. The records were obtained by Bloomberg News Friday through a Freedom of Information Act request. The abstentions are unusual, particularly because Waller heads the reserve bank oversight subcommittee at the board, which means he would have been in communication with the Chicago Fed's directors before they made their final pick.
Unlike selections to the Fed board in Washington, which are presidential nominations subject to Senate confirmation, the heads of the 12 regional Fed banks are picked by their local directors though the board does also have a vote. The abstentions suggests some wariness on the selection by both governors. A spokesperson for the Fed board didn't have an immediate comment.
Goolsbee was an economic adviser to former President Barack Obama, as well as to Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg during his 2020 presidential run.
Goolsbee has a long record of criticizing Republican policies, and partisan commentary.
Chair Jerome Powell was appointed to the chairmanship by Trump and was nominated for a second term at the Fed's helm by President Joe Biden. Powell supported the Goolsbee pick, the record shows, as did all other governors, who were nominated by Biden or Obama. The Chicago Fed announced their pick of Goolsbee Dec. 1. He started the job in January and cast his first vote on monetary policy earlier this month. The Wall Street Journal reported the White House is considering Goolsbee as a candidate to replace Vice Chair Lael Brainard, who is departing the board next week to become Biden's top economic adviser.

The Trump Jobs Machine Is Roaring
The great American job-creating machine, already in high gear, picked up in May, when the economy added 223,000 jobs-over 50,000 more than experts had predicted.
That news took second place to a 7:21 a.m. Trump tweet, "Looking forward to seeing the employment numbers at 8:30 this morning." In fact, his economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, had called him on Air Force One the evening before to inform him of the blockbuster number. The president's tweet was a clue that the numbers would be favorable. Advance release, even comment by a member of the executive branch until "at least one hour after the official release time" violates Office of Management and Budget Statistical Policy Directive No.3, which was designed to prevent insider share trading based on this information. "Lock him up," a laughing Austan Goolsbee, former adviser to Barack Obama, chanted on CNBC.
Policy makers and pundits once waited with bated breath every first Friday of the month to learn whether there were enough jobs for all the men and women in the workforce. Now, with the unemployment rate at 3.8 percent, the lowest in 18 years, we wait to see whether there are enough workers to fill the available jobs.

Which brings us to JOLTS: The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey reports that there are 6.6 million unfilled positions, the highest level since these data have been compiled.Which is why more and more workers are telling their employers to take this job and shove it. The quits rate-the portion of workers willing to quit their jobs in search of better ones-stood at only 1.3 percent during the recent recession. It now stands at 2.3 percent, a record high

UBS president Robert Wolf has opened shop with a new firm called 32 Advisors, which advises domestic and foreign business clients:
The firm opened its doors in February after signing up several prominent Obama alumni, including former White House economic adviser Austan Goolsbee, who will provide "economic intelligence" as a "strategic partner," and Kevin Varney, the former chief of staff of the government's export-import bank (the very same agency clients will hit up for loans).
Though Wolf promises that his firm won't lobby-anyone who asks will be referred to Washington fixer (and strategic partner) Heather Podesta

U.S president Donald Trump asserted on Tuesday that "everybody wants to work in the White House." But outgoing National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn doesn't, and neither does Austan Goolsbee, Barack Obama's former economic advisor.
Speaking to CNBC on Wednesday, Goolsbee said he wouldn't take Cohn's position "if it was the last job on Earth."
The leading economist, who is currently a University of Chicago professor, cited disagreements with the administration's policy focus, and concern over recent departures of White House staffers.

Recent Bonesmen:
John F. Kerry - Class of 1966
Yale University Archives
The current secretary of state and former senator from Massachusetts, Kerry spent a childhood abroad with his diplomat father before attending Yale and gaining membership into Skull and Bones.
While at Yale, he served as the (liberal) president of the Yale Political Union, although his candidacy in the 2004 presidential race didn't end quite as well.
Kerry's period as an on-campus Bonesman just missed - by two years - intersecting with the man he would come to challenge in that messy political head-to-head.
Frederick Wallace Smith - Class of 1966
AP Photo
Smith, an often forgotten Bonesman, founded FedEx, the first and largest express delivery company in the world. He serves as president, chairman, and CEO of the multibillion-dollar company.
He earned his degree in economics, and many speculated he might land a role in John McCain's potential presidential cabinet or even be his VP pick.
Defying ideological borders, Smith was close friends with both Bush and Kerry during his days at Yale.
Smith also made a brief cameo in the movie "Cast Away." (If you'll recall, Wilson, the friendliest volleyball, arrived in a FedEx box.)
George W. Bush - Class of 1968
Media Library - Yale Whiffenpoofs
"W's" family name had become synonymous with Skull and Bones by the time he arrived on Yale's campus. There were rumors that Bush almost missed getting tapped by the group, but he ended up becoming the third Bonesman to become president.
We don't know much about Bush's time in the club. "My senior year I joined Skull and Bones, a secret society, so secret I can't say anything more," he wrote in his 1999 autobiography, "A Charge to Keep." Bush, however, carries a certain disdain for Yale's brand of East Coast elitism, as The Atlantic pointed out.
Stephen A. Schwarzman - Class of 1969
Brendan McDermid/Reuters
The club tapped Schwarzman only a year behind George W. Bush. He came to prominence under the future president's administration when his hedge fund, The Blackstone Group, went public in 2007.
The SEC filings for Blackstone's IPO revealed that Schwarzman had made an average of $1 million per day for the fiscal year ending December 2006. Forbes estimates his personal fortune at around $7.7 billion. In November 2015, Business Insider referred to him as "the richest man in private equity."
In 2010, Schwarzman famously compared the Obama administration's plan to raise taxes to Hitler's invasion of Poland. He apologized after the media hullabaloo.
Dana Milbank - Class of 1990
Dana Milbank, right, with Arianna Huffington. AP Photo/Earl Gibson III
Milbank begins the newest generation of Bonesmen on the list. He's a journalist who has covered both the Bush and Obama presidencies extensively, offending both at one time or another.
Milbank writes a column for The Washington Post, and he wrote "Tears of a Clown: Glenn Beck and the Teabagging of America," among other books.

Another newbie Bonesman by usual standards, Goolsbee, a 46-year-old economist, was the youngest member of Obama's cabinet.
The Texas-born economist was presumably tapped in 1989 while studying economics and performing with the Yale improv troupe "Just Add Water."
He made notable appearances on the "The Daily Show," and Jon Stewart described him as "Eliot Ness meets Milton Friedman" - a reference, respectively, to a federal agent who took down Al Capone and a famous economist who won the Nobel Prize.
