Ukraine: Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk's Ally Accused of Graft
Print article
Published: 09 October 2015

Ukraine's Ihor Kotvitsky,a lawmaker from Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk's People's Front party, has been accused of corruption for allegedly moving US$ 40 million to an offshore company through Ukraine's state-owned Oshchadbank.
A Kyiv Post review of Kotvitsky's 2014 assets declaration form found no such sum listed.
Serhiy Leshchenko, a member of Parliament for the Petro Poroshenko Bloc and a former journalist for Ukrainska Pravda, said that Kovitsky only declared the transaction six months past the legal deadline for doing so.
On Sept. 25, Leshchenko posted scanned copies of what he said were Kotvitsky's original declaration and a corrected version on Ukrainska Pravda's website.
Leschenko claims the documents showed that the cash was transferred to a Swiss bank account held by Panamanian company Kingston Group SA through Oshchadbank.
Both Kotvitsky and Interior Minister Arsen Avakov have brushed off the accusations.
"Leshchenko is a skilful manipulator," said Avakov during a news conference in Kharkiv, adding that Kotvitsky was a "rigorous" taxpayer.
"For example, last year Kotvitsky paid 32 million Ukrainian hryvnia [US$ 1.49 million] of income tax. Everything else is manipulation," claimed Avakov.
Kotvitsky told the Kyiv Post that "everyone distorts information in their own interests so much" that he did not wish to comment.
Oshchadbank denies any wrongdoing in making the transfer, claiming it had done its duty by reporting the transfer to the National Bank of Ukraine.

I was asked to pick my favourite story on the Ukraine war to mark the first anniversary. This was the one I chose:
An oligarch-politician's wife is caught smuggling suitcases stashed with cash out of the country- as the West sends unaccounted for $billions in.
This story was memory-holed so fast I suffered whiplash just from watching it happen.

Politician's wife accused of smuggling ?22m in cash out of Ukraine
The wife of a prominent Ukrainian politician is alleged to have carried more than ?22 million in cash through a refugee border crossing into the EU.
The money, in US dollars and euros, was found by Hungarian customs in the baggage of Anastasia Kotvitska, according to Ukrainian media outlets. She is thewife of Igor Kotvitsky,52, a former MP.
A criminal case has been opened against Kotvitska for failing to declare the removal of the large sum from Ukraine, the reports said.
Kotvitsky, once Ukraine's wealthiest MP, said his wife was leaving the country to give birth, but denied reports she was carrying $28 million and ?1.3 million.
"All my money is in Ukrainian banks, I did not take anything out," he said, before closing his social media account.
A statement from Kotvitsky on the social media of his Swiss-educated daughter Violetta, 24, said the story was "fake and rumours".
Kotvitska, who reportedly travelled with two Hungarian men and her mother, has not commented.
She did not declare the cash as she left Ukraine at the Vilok border crossing but the money was found as she entered Hungary, Obozrevatel newspaper reported. She then made a declaration that she had brought the money into Hungary.
There is huge sensitivity in Ukraine about the wealthy elite trying to take their fortunes abroad, evading curbs on capital flight at a time when the country's fate hangs in the balance.
Kovitsky reportedly controls, via associates, Nuclear Energy Systems of Ukraine and uranium deposits in the country. He is also seen as having close business and political links with Arsen Avakov, who was interior minister until last summer.
There are calls for a criminal investigation into border guards alleged to have turned a blind eye to cash at the crossing in the country's Transcarpathian region.
Seyar Khushutov, a Kyiv businessman who revealed the Kotvitska case, said there was a tariff of bribes levied by customs officers enabling cash to leave the country.
"The names of the customs officers and border guards who do this are well known in narrow circles," he said. These illicit payments amounted to "between 3-7.5 per cent", depending on the amount and level of the applicant.

Billionaire Zelensky-Backer & Ex-Minister Among Ukrainian Officials Targeted In More Anti-Corruption Raids
In yet another case of curious timing, given it comes a day after the US Treasury issued a (dubious) statement saying US authorities have found no evidence of misuse of the billions in US aid funds flowing into Ukraine, Wednesday has witnessed more anti-corruption raids on a number of prominent government-linked figures.
Among the homes raided by Ukraine's security agency, the SBU, included that of the former interior minister Arsen Avakov, as well as one of the the country's richest men with ties to Zelensky, Ihor Kolomoisky.
In Kolomoisky's case, state security services released photos of the Ukrainian billionaire's home being searched. The probe is reportedly related to massive embezzlement and fraud cases centering on Ukraine's two largest oil firms.
"In a statement that made no mention of the tycoon, the economic security bureau said it had exposed large-scale embezzlement schemes and tax evasion worth 40bn hyrivnia ($1bn; ?880m) by the former management of Ukraine's two biggest oil firms, Ukranafta and Ukrtatnafta," BBC reports.
Kolomoisky had already long been under US sanctions over "significant corruption" allegations during his time as governor of the wider Dnipropetrovsk region in 2014.

Bye-bye, Kiev, hello Cote d'Azur...

When the Surkis brothers left Ukraine, they took $17 million with them. But that's just a trifle compared to the 'heroes of the Euromaidan'. According to former People's Deputy of Ukraine Oleg Tsarev, after the outbreak of hostilities, leading Ukrainian politicians sent both their capital and their families abroad.
He mentions that the parents and relatives of Zelensky and his wife all left the country. His predecessor, former President Pyotr Poroshenko, moved not just his children but also about a billion US dollars in cash to the UK.
The same applies to other major Ukrainian officials: former Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov, the head of the Office of the President, Andrey Yermak, the second president of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, former Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk, and many others all took their families and fortunes, estimated at around a billion dollars, out of the country. And that's not to mention the numerous politically-affiliated oligarchs.
Scammers of smaller stature can "individually join the EU" as well. A system of bribery allows military-age males to leave the country. According to Izvestia, the fee is currently between $8,000 and $10,000. The Ukrainian media also actively reports on people paying to cross the border.
The sympathy of Westerners towards a country at war is understandable. But while some countries are doing their utmost to aid Ukraine - even while facing an economic crisis themselves -corrupt Ukrainian officials are using the funding to amass personal fortunes and live the high life at fancy resorts. And all at the expense of taxpayers in the West.
In 2015, Arseny Yatseniuk, upon leaving the post of the prime minister, openly declared that he had become a billionaire. It is yet to be seen how many new Ukrainian super rich tycoons - nurtured by foreign military aid - will appear in the West by the end of the conflict.

That same month, Shaktorysk fighters underwent training under the auspices of the regional police headquarters. On July 8, 2014, the newly minted police unit officially "graduated" and took its oath of office before being posted to Mariupol.
According to former SBU agent turned whistleblower Vassily Prozorov, "From the decision of Interior Minister Arsen Avakov to establish special police 'patrol' units within the structure of the ministry of the interior (MVD), these divisions began to appear like mushrooms after a rainy day." The special battalions grew from only two in the days after Euromaidan to fifty-nine within several months.
Seven days before graduating from its training camp, Shaktoyrsk battalion members flaunted their sadistic tendencies. On July 1, just a week before the unit's training ended, a local civilian named Ruslan Kyrenkov was visiting a friend's house when he was accosted by "a gang of men with weapons." They dragged him out of the home, claiming he was a separatist, and took him to one of their secret basement prisons. While his ordeal only lasted two days, he told this reporter, "it felt like fifteen days."
Kyrenkov was tied to a chair, while a masked member of the battalion whipped out a blow torch and seared the flesh on the chest and arms. He was tortured for three days straight. Even today, he bears the scars of his torture. "They used to be much darker," he said of his third degree wounds, "but now they have lightened up"
The Shaktoyrsk Battalion was hardly unique in its barbarism. Many of the special battalions operated with total impunity while their commanders raked in money by engaging in smuggling of virtually any good, knowing they could always establish a monopoly through brute violence.
For example, in July 2015, the Right Sektor operated a tobacco smuggling cartel in the city of Mukachevo. When a conflict erupted between two factions of the far-right unit, a shoot-out ensued, and police attempted to intervene.
According to the local prosecutor's office:
On July 11 in Mukachevo at about 14:00, 20 armed persons in camouflage with the labels "Right Sector" and similar stickers on their automobiles came to an appointment with local residents in a cafe for the purpose of divvying up spheres of influence. A conflict broke out and the armed men began shooting from firearms at the above-mentioned establishment. According to preliminary information 6 policemen and 3 civilians suffered gunshot wounds of various degrees of severity. Five of the armed men with the 'Right Sector' labels also suffered injuries."
However, Right Sektor members wound up escaping from the police, who were unable to disarm them. After the police pursued the armed gang, Right Sektor retaliated by taking a 6 year old boy hostage. In July 25 2015, after failing to disarm the Right Sektor, Interior Minister Arseniy Avakov suspended the police-chief in Mukachevo. Now the right-wing gang could not only pursue its tobacco smuggling activities without official harassment, it could decide who would be next to lead the local police.
Along with total impunity, the right-wing paramilitaries were provided with a seemingly endless store of weapons by the US. Then-comedian Zelensky made light of the trend in one of his nationally televised comedy routines. In one especially notable bit, Zelensky played a cop in the post-Maidan police whose sole qualification for the job was being the nephew of the police chief.
In Zelensky's routine, a hapless unit of rookie cops accidentally blows up an expensive tank. "Don't worry, America will replace it," they declare with a casual shrug.

Not worth your sympathy: The story of Ukraine's neo-Nazi Azov battalion
Much less than the heroic defenders they are made out to be, the extremist regiment's many crimes are well documented
By Evgeny Norin, a Russian historian focused on conflicts and international politicsPart 1 of 2
Ukrainian propaganda has elevated the Azov Battalion's protracted but ultimately doomed final stand, in Mariupol, to heroic proportions. Adding further pathos to this sentimental story were the desperate calls for help from the commanders of the units entrapped in the bowels of the Azovstal factory and the photogenic young wives of the besieged fighters pleading with Pope Francis at the Vatican.
Yet, an observant eye could also wonder about the abundance of Nazi tattoos adorning the battalion's POWs. The fighters of the Donetsk militia even came up with a joke about capturing "large numbers of pirates and electricians" in reference to the numerous individuals with the skull and crossbones and SS bolts - the widely recognizable Totenkopf and Schutzstaffel symbols - emblazoned on their skin.
Western media has been bending over backwards trying to explain how people covered in Nazi tattoos are not neo-Nazis. However, it turns out that sporting symbols related to Adolf Hitler's odious Third Reich is not even close to being the worst of the crimes committed by the Azov.
The battalion's history pre-dates the current conflict in Ukraine. Between 2005 and 2010, the governor of the Kharkov Region, the major industrial hub of northeastern Ukraine, was Arsen Avakov. During Avakov's tenure in office, nationalist Andrey Biletsky, known as the White Ruler, became very active in the area. The two were close acquaintances during Biletsky's university years. In 2005, he founded an ultranationalist organization, The Patriot of Ukraine, which mostly consisted of aggressive football fans and low-level criminals of the street fighter variety.
According to media reports, the movement didn't bother doing much that was patriotic but preferred involving itself in various semi-legal and shadowy activities. Biletsky ended up doing some jail time, though not for political reasons, but rather for plain and simple hooliganism. After the 2014 Western-backed Maidan coup in Kiev, Biletsky was set free as a 'political' prisoner of the fallen Viktor Yanukovich government. He used his connection to Avakov, who by then had become Ukraine's new minister of the interior, to set up a territorial defense battalion to fight in the east of the country. This became known as the Azov.
In Eastern Ukraine, the protests of locals in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions against the Maidan movement escalated to an armed rebellion, and Biletsky's newly formed battalion was tasked with suppressing it. Unlike many other territorial defense volunteer units, the Azov had a very distinct ideological flavor from the very start. It was a far-right organization that welcomed all sorts of neo-Nazis ranging from mild to radical ones. The Azov fighters were known for their obsession with pagan rituals and were considered freaks by regular military units.
That, however, was what made the battalion a good fit for the task. Being fanatics, these people did not shy away from killing. Before the Donbass militia was established, the Azov carried out killings of a number of pro-Russian activists.
These acts of individual terror had a philosophy behind them. "It will suffice to kill about fifty 'vatniks' {a pejorative term used for those with pro-Russian sympathies} in every town to put a stop to all this," as one of the fighters with the battalion put it. On June 13, 2014, Azov put this motto into practice by defeating, as part of a larger combat group, a small unit of the Donbass people's militia in Mariupol. The Azov Battalion was able to put forward quite a few combat-ready soldiers and several gun trucks, while the militia in Mariupol was weak and poorly armed. Five insurgents were killed. The Azov and Ukrainian security services did not hesitate to open fire on local civilians in the Mariupol standoff. There is a video showing the Ukrainians wounding and killing several unarmed people by gunfire. One of the victims is 'armed' with a plastic chair.
However, because it was not part of the army - at least formally - the Azov Battalion rarely engaged in actual combat operations. In the summer of 2014, a small group of its fighters attacked the town of Ilovaisk, and in the winter of 2015 they launched an assault on Shirokino, a village located on the Azov Sea coast, where they interacted with officers from the Ukrainian Army who later recounted that the battalion had left the impression of an undisciplined unit, one that was hard to deal with…

What you need to know about the case of former Tornado battalion servicemen
How the case unfolded
Following Hennadii Moskal's request, on June 17, 2015 eight Tornado servicemen were detained, including the commander Ruslan Onyshchenko, who was in Dnipropetrovsk. The Minister of Interior, Arsen Avakov, signed an order on discontinuation of Tornado company the next day, on June 18, 2015. Tornado troops said their prosecution was caused by the conflict of their battalion commander Onyshchenko with the then-Head of Department of Interior in Luhansk region Anatolii Naumenko, who supposedly covered smuggling in the region. Another reason was military prosecutor Anatolii Matios' personal distaste of volunteer battalions. On August 2, 2016, former Tornado troops threw faeces and urine at the attendees in the court room. At the same time, clashes occurred near the Obolonskyi court building.

U.S. House Admits Nazi Role in Ukraine
June 12, 2015 (Look at the date)
Exclusive: The U.S. House of Representatives has admitted an ugly truth that the U.S. mainstream media has tried to hide from the American people that the post-coup regime in Ukraine has relied heavily on Nazi storm troopers to carry out its bloody war against ethnic Russians, reports Robert Parry.
Last February, when ethnic Russian rebels were closing in on the Ukrainian port of Mariupol, the New York Times rhapsodically described the heroes defending the city and indeed Western civilization the courageous Azov battalion facing down barbarians at the gate. What the Times didn't tell its readers was that these "heroes" were Nazis, some of them even wearing Swastikas and SS symbols.
Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives has just voted unanimously to bar U.S. assistance going to the Azov battalion because of its Nazi ties.
On June 10, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a bipartisan amendment to the Defense Appropriations Act from Reps. John Conyers Jr., D-Michigan, and Ted Yoho, R-Florida that would block U.S. training of the Azov battalion and would prevent transfer of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles to fighters in Iraq and Ukraine. (this article from 2015 shows you how far to hell the US and congress has gone)
"I am grateful that the House of Representatives unanimously passed my amendments last night to ensure that our military does not train members of the repulsive neo-Nazi Azov Battalion, along with my measures to keep the dangerous and easily trafficked MANPADs out of these unstable regions," said Conyers on Thursday. (Hmm our military is still doing this, aren't they now violating this)
He described Ukraine's Azov Battalion as a 1,000-man volunteer militia of the Ukrainian National Guard that Foreign Policy Magazine has characterized as "openly neo-Nazi" and "fascist." And Azov is not some obscure force. Ukraine's Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, who oversees Ukraine's armed militias, announced that Azov troops would be among the first units to be trained by the 300 U.S. military advisers who have been dispatched to Ukraine in atraining mission codenamed "Fearless Guardian."
White Supremacy
"Biletsky had run Patriot of Ukraine [the precursor of the Azov battalion] since 2005. In a 2010 interview he described the organization as nationalist 'storm troops' ... The group's ideology was 'social nationalism' - a term Biletsky, a historian, knew would deceive no one.
"In 2007, Biletsky railed against a government decision to introduce fines for racist remarks: 'So why the "Negro-love" on a legislative level? They want to break everyone who has risen to defend themselves, their family, their right to be masters of their own land! They want to destroy the Nation's biological resistance to everything alien….where cities are "blackening" fast and crime and the drug trade are invading even the remotest corners.'"
"Biletsky landed in prison in 2011, after his organization took part in a series of shootouts and fights. Following Ukraine's so-called revolution of dignity last year, he was freed as a political prisoner; right-wing organizations, with their paramilitary training, played an important part in the violent phase of the uprising against former President Viktor Yanukovych. The new authorities - which included the ultra-nationalist party Svoboda - wanted to show their gratitude.
"The war in the east gave Biletsky's storm troopers a chance at a higher status than they could ever have hoped to achieve. They fought fiercely, and last fall, the 400-strong Azov Battalion became part of the National Guard, receiving permission to expand to 2,000 fighters and gaining access to heavy weaponry. So what if some of its members had Nazi symbols tattooed on their bodies and the unit's banner bore the Wolfsangel, used widely by the Nazis during World War II?
The fighting for Donetsk has taken on a lethal pattern: The regular army bombards separatist positions from afar, followed by chaotic, violent assaults by some of the half-dozen or so paramilitary groups surrounding Donetsk who are willing to plunge into urban combat," the Times reported.
"Officials in Kiev say the militias and the army coordinate their actions, but the militias, which count about 7,000 fighters, are angry and, at times, uncontrollable. One known as Azov, which took over the village of Marinka, flies a neo-Nazi symbol resembling a Swastika as its flag."

A far-right battalion has a key role in Ukraine's resistance. Its neo-Nazi history has been exploited by Putin
(CNN) President Vladimir Putin framed the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a "special mission" to protect Russian speakers from genocide at the hands of ?"neo-Nazis."
In a speech broadcast minutes before the invasion began on February 24?, Putin said: "We will seek to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine," ignoring the fact that the country's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is Jewish.
For the Kremlin, Exhibit A in this special mission is the far-right Azov movement, part of the military and political landscape in Ukraine for nearly a decade. ?
Azov's military and political wings formally separated in 2016, when the far-right National Corps party was founded. The Azov battalion had by then been integrated into the Ukrainian National Guard.
An effective fighting force that's very much involved in the current conflict, the battalion has a history of neo-Nazi leanings, which have not been entirely extinguished by its integration into the Ukrainian military. ?
In its heyday as an autonomous militia, the Azov Battalion was associated with White supremacists and neo-Nazi ideology and insignia. It was especially active in and around Mariupol in 2014 and 2015. CNN teams in the area at the time reported Azov's embrace of neo-Nazi emblems and paraphernalia.
After its integration into the Ukrainian National Guard, amid discussions in the US Congress about designating the Azov Movement a foreign terrorist organization, Ukraine's then minister of internal affairs, Arsen Avakov, defended the unit. "The shameful information campaign about the alleged spread of Nazi ideology (among Azov members) is a deliberate attempt to discredit the 'Azov' unit and the National Guard of Ukraine," he told the online newspaper Ukrayinska Pravda in 2019.
The battalion still operates as a relatively autonomous entity. It has been prominent in defending Mariupol in recent weeks, and its resistance has been widely praised by members of the government.
For Putin, who has falsely claimed Ukraine's government is run by "drug addicts and neo-Nazis," Azov presents an obvious target. Moscow has given the regiment an outsized role in the conflict, routinely accusing it of human rights abuses.
On March 7, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations blamed the Azov regiment for blocking an evacuation corridor in the besieged port city, saying they were using "citizens as a human shield." That claim has been repeated consistently in Russian media.
The same day, Azov major Denis Prokopenko said in a video shared on the regiment's Twitter account that the "attempts to organize a safe corridor for the (relocation) of civilian people… failed because of several actions of the enemy (Russian forces) in the assembly area."
After the bombing of a Mariupol theater that was sheltering civilians and had "children" written in Russian on the ground on either side of the building, the Russian Defense Ministry accused "militants of the nationalist 'Azov' battalion" of carrying out the attack. ?
In the Russian disinformation playbook, the Azov movement is a tempting target – one where fact and disinformation can be elided.

Meanwhile, echoes from the Empire of Lies all but gave the whole game away. There's no intention whatsoever in Washington to facilitate a peace plan in Ukraine - and that explains Comedian Zelensky's non-stop stalling tactics. The supreme target is regime change in Russia, and for that Totalen Krieg against Russia and all things Russian is warranted. Ukraine is just a pawn in the game - or worse, mere cannon fodder.
This also means that the 14,000 deaths in Donbass for the past 8 years should be directly attributed to the Exceptionalists. As for Ukrainian neo-Nazis of all stripes, they are as expendable as "moderate rebels" in Syria, be they al-Qaeda or Daesh-linked. Those that may eventually survive can always join the budding CIA-sponsored Neo-Nazi Inc. - the tawdry remix of the 1980s Jihad Inc. in Afghanistan. They will be properly "Kalibrated".
A quick neo-Nazi recap
By now only the brain dead across NATOstan - and there are hordes - are not aware of Maidan in 2014. Yet few know that it was then Ukrainian Minister of Interior Arsen Avakov, a former governor of Kharkov, who gave the green light for a 12,000 paramilitary outfit to materialize out of Sect 82 soccer hooligans who supported Dynamo Kiev. That was the birth of the Azov batallion, in May 2014, led by Andriy Biletsky, a.k.a. the White Fuhrer, and former leader of the neo-nazi gang Patriots of Ukraine.
Together with NATO stay-behind agent Dmitro Yarosh, Biletsky founded Pravy Sektor, financed by Ukrainian mafia godfather and Jewish billionaire Ihor Kolomoysky (later the benefactor of the meta-conversion of Zelensky from mediocre comedian to mediocre President.)
Pravy Sektor happened to be rabidly anti-EU - tell that to Ursula von der Lugen - and politically obsessed with linking Central Europe and the Baltics in a new, tawdry Intermarium. Crucially, Pravy Sektor and other nazi gangs were duly trained by NATO instructors.
Biletsky and Yarosh are of course disciples of notorious WWII-era Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera, for whom pure Ukrainians are proto-Germanic or Scandinavian, and Slavs are untermenschen .
Azov ended up absorbing nearly all neo-Nazi groups in Ukraine and were dispatched to fight against Donbass - with their acolytes making more money than regular soldiers. Biletsky and another neo-Nazi leader, Oleh Petrenko, were elected to the Rada. The White F?hrer stood on his own. Petrenko decided to support then President Poroshenko. Soon the Azov battalion was incorporated as the Azov Regiment to the Ukrainian National Guard. They went on a foreign mercenary recruiting drive - with people coming from Western Europe, Scandinavia, and even South America.
That was strictly forbidden by the Minsk Agreements guaranteed by France and Germany (and now de facto defunct). Azov set up training camps for teenagers and soon reached 10,000 members. Erik "Blackwater" Prince, in 2020, struck a deal with the Ukrainian military that would enable his renamed outfit, Academi, to supervise Azov. It was none other than sinister Maidan cookie distributor Vicky "F**k the EU" Nuland who suggested to Zelensky - both of them, by the way, Ukrainian Jews - to appoint avowed Nazi Yarosh as an adviser to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Gen Valerii Zaluzhnyi. The target: organize a blitzkrieg on Donbass and Crimea - the same blitzkrieg that SVR, Russian foreign intel, concluded would be launched on February 22, thus propelling the launch of Operation Z.
All of the above, in fact just a quick recap, shows that in Ukraine there's no difference whatsoever between white neo-Nazis and brown-colored al-Qaeda/ISIS/Daesh, as much as neo-Nazis are just as "Christian" as takfiri Salafi-jihadis are "Muslim".
When Putin denounced a "bunch of neo-Nazis" in power in Kiev, the Comedian replied that it was impossible because he was Jewish. Nonsense. Zelensky and his patron Kolomoysky, for all practical purposes, are Zio-Nazis.
Even as branches of the United States government admitted to neo-Nazis entrenched in the Kiev apparatus, the Exceptionalist machine made the daily shelling of Donbass for 8 years simply disappear. These thousands of civilian victims never existed.
U.S. mainstream media even ventured the odd piece or report on Azov and Aidar neo-Nazis. But then a neo-Orwellian narrative was set in stone: there are no Nazis in Ukraine. CIA offshoot NED even started deleting records about training members of Aidar. Recently a crappy news network duly promoted a video of a NATO-trained and weaponized Azov commander - complete with Nazi iconography.
Why "denazification" makes sense

U.S. Congress Accidentally Boosted Ukraine's Far-Right
A member of Congress wrote to the State Department calling out Ukraine's Azov movement as terrorists. It backfired.
They were from Ukraine's far-right Azov movement, holding placards reading "Azov are heroes" and stretching out a printed banner for the cameras reading "Defense of Ukraine isn't terrorism." They spoke on the steps with Ukraine's deputy foreign minister and demanded that his ministry send an official note of protest to the State Department.
They were there because of Rep. Max Rose, who represents New York's 11th congressional district. He sent a letter on Oct. 16 to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, signed by 39 of his colleagues, demanding that several international far-right movements, including the Azov movement, be officially placed on the foreign terrorist organization list alongside the Islamic State and al Qaeda. The first group mentioned by name in Rose's letter is the Azov movement, which, Rose writes, "has been recruiting, radicalizing and training American citizens for years."
The goal of the letter seems apparent: to draw attention to international far-right extremist groups thought to be inciting acts of terrorism, a growing concern in the wake of the attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand, and similar ones in El Paso, Texas, and Halle, Germany, among others.
But here in Ukraine, Rose's efforts have backfired. The letter is sloppy, to the point where some of the claims in the letter, especially the claim that the Christchurch shooter admitted to training with Azov, are simply wrong. Yes, Azov is indeed a dangerous far-right movement with global ambitions, something I've argued a number of times. But Rose's letter actually helps Azov's cause.
The Azov Battalion was founded in 2014 to help defend Ukraine against Russian-led proxy forces. It also quickly became known as a place where foreign far-right extremists could make themselves at home. Almost six years later, Azov has expanded into a multipronged movement with a political party, street militia, and dozens of affiliated smaller organizations. The military unit is now under the auspices of Ukraine's National Guard and properly known as the Azov Regiment. It's why, in Rose's letter, referring to Azov as simply the "Azov Battalion" is not only technically incorrect but displays a lack of understanding about the movement itself. (Rose's office did not reply to a request for comment from Foreign Policy.)
Thanks to Azov, Ukraine has emerged as a new hub for the transnational far-right. From organizing international far-right conferences and neo-Nazi concerts to actively trying to recruit American extremists into its ranks, there's good reason to be concerned about what Azov is doing. After the arrest in September of a U.S. soldier who allegedly planned to bomb an American news network and then go to Ukraine to fight with Azov, that concern has only grown.
The reality here in Ukraine, however, is a bit more complicated. In a country still at war with Russian-led forces, veterans of all political stripes hold high stature in Ukrainian society. This includes veterans from the Azov Battalion, who are still thought of highly for the defense of cities like Mariupol in eastern Ukraine in 2014. It's why their far-right, often outright neo-Nazi affiliations are considered secondary to their role as "defenders" and are often downplayed or ignored in mainstream Ukrainian politics and society.
It's also why negative reaction to the letter in Ukraine has come from more than just Azov itself. Last week, Ukraine's interior minister, Arsen Avakov-considered the de facto patron of the Azov movement-defended Azov in a meeting with American officials, calling the letter a "shameful information campaign" and claiming that Ukraine would "counter these dirty and insidious methods."
Even parliamentarians from President Volodymyr Zelensky's own party, which now dominates Ukraine's parliament after July's elections, has defended Azov. A letter signed by 39 Ukrainian MPs, mostly MPs from Zelensky's Servant of the People party, and sent to the chair of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs said that "attempts to label one of the most decorated official units of the National Guard of Ukraine as a "terrorist organization" or an "overseas violent white supremacist extremist group" weigh heavily on our souls and painfully echo in the hearts of...Ukrainian servicemen, veterans and volunteers." And outside the doors of the foreign ministry, Deputy Foreign Minister Vasyl Bodnar told representatives of Azov that "the Azov Regiment is a defender of Ukraine, not a terrorist organization."

"Just one month before the 2019 elections that saw him win, Zelensky sold the company [Kvartal 95 Studio] to a friend, still finding a way to get the proceeds of the business he had officially renounced to his family. That friend was Serhiy Shefir, who was later appointed Councilor to the Presidency. [...] The sale of the shares took place for the benefit of Maltex Multicapital Corp., a company owned by Shefir and registered in the British Virgin Islands" (here).
The current Ukrainian President promoted his election campaign with a commercial that was disturbing, to say the least (here), in which, holding two machine guns, he fired on members of Parliament, pointed out as corrupt or subservient to Russia. The fight against corruption trumpeted by the Ukrainian President in the role of "servant of the people" does not correspond, however, to the picture that emerges of him from the so-called Pandora papers, in which 40 million dollars appear to have been paid to him on the eve of the elections by the Jewish billionaire Kolomoisky[1] through offshore accounts (here, here and here).[2] In his homeland, many accuse him of having taken power away from the pro-Russian oligarchs not to give it to the Ukrainian people, but rather to strengthen his own interest group and at the same time remove his political adversaries: "He liquidated the ministers of the old guard, first of all the powerful Minister of the Interior, [Arsen] Avakov. He rudely retired the president of the Constitutional Court who was acting as a check on his laws. He closed seven opposition TV channels. He arrested and accused of treason Viktor Medvedcuk, a pro-Russian sympathizer but above all the leader of the Platform of Opposition - For Life party, the second party of the Ukrainian Parliament after his Servant of the People party. He is also placing on trial for treason former President Poroshenko, who was suspicious of everyone except for those who got along with the Russians or their friends. The mayor of Kiev, the popular former world boxing champion Vitaly Klitchko, has already been subjected to several searches and seizures. In short, Zelensky seems to want to make a clean sweep of anyone who is not aligned with his politics"

UK to lead efforts to kick Russia out of Interpol
Ukraine is pushing the West to remove Russia from the international policing organization
Britain will "be leading all international effort" to suspend Russia from Interpol at Ukraine's request, Home Secretary Priti Patel announced on Monday. Russia has been a member of the international police organization since 1990.
"The Ukrainian government has today requested that the Russian government be suspended from its membership of Interpol, and we will be leading all international effort to that effect," Patel told Parliament.
Russia has been a member of the global policing agency since 1990, which counts 195 nations among its members. The organization is not a law enforcement agency, but facilitates international cooperation against a wide range of criminal activity, particularly transnational crimes like terrorism, cybercrime, and organized crime.
Although Ukraine is pushing for Russia's exclusion from Interpol in light of its military offensive in the country, Kiev has protested Russia's membership in the organization before. Back in 2018, then-Interior Minister Arsen Avakov threatened to withdraw from Interpol if a Russian, Aleksandr Prokopchuk, was made its chief. Avakov claimed that appointing a Russian official to lead Interpol would pose "a hybrid threat to the whole world," and the organization eventually elected a South Korean, Kim Jong-yang, to the role instead.
The UK has levied a range of punishments on Russia in light of the conflict in Ukraine. British airspace is closed to Russian flights, the UK government has sent anti-tank weapons and other "lethal aid" to the Ukrainian military, and London has sanctioned Russia's central bank and backed Russia's expulsion from the SWIFT network.
The Russian military offensive in Ukraine is ongoing, with Moscow aiming to force Kiev into disarming and abandoning its aspirations toward NATO membership. While fighting raged in several cities throughout the country, delegations from Moscow and Kiev met in Belarus on Monday for tentative peace talks.

Ukraine police free Jewish businessman abducted outside synagogue
A gang of criminals allegedly led by a former Ukrainian secret service officer abducted a Jewish man outside his synagogue in Kyiv on Aug. 21 and held him for ransom.
A gang of criminals allegedly led by a former Ukrainian secret service officer abducted a Jewish man outside his synagogue in Kyiv on Aug. 21 and held him for ransom. The man, who was seized outside the Brodsky Synagogue, was not identified.
Abductors working for the victim's former business partner reportedly lured him outside the synagogue under a false pretense, forced him into a vehicle and drove off to a secluded cabin belonging to the grandmother of one of the conspirators, the report said. Before they got there, the man tried to escape, jumping from a height of about 15 feet and breaking both legs.
Police were able to retrace the man's steps and rescue him after his wife reported him missing. They studied multiple security cameras to reconstruct the kidnappers' itinerary while investigating the dispute with the former partner, who has been arrested along with six other alleged co-conspirators, the report said.
Interior Minister Arsen Avakov put together a team of researchers who worked through the weekend of Aug. 21, said Girorgy Logvisky, a member of the Brodsky congregation, who helped police find the victim.

At this point another false flag was staged (or a tragic mistake used for launching of propaganda false flag) – MH17 shooting took place. Which removed almost all of the remaining taboos. Putin became the second reincarnation of Hitler (conditioning of international community went at full speed), Eastern Ukrainian militias - terrorists, and Russians within hysterical and prepared Ukrainian discourse - Undermensch, with whom can be do as anywhere.
This is one of the last stages of dehumanization of residents of Ukraine. And it was very successful. Well, the main profit for the Western technologist was not Ukraine itself by geopolitical defeat of Russia as well as a perfect opportunity to unleash sanction (aka an economic war) against Russia and a turn of world public opinion against Russia and Russians.
Washington's Blog
We pointed out Wednesday that the Estonian foreign minister claims that the new Ukrainian coalition deployed snipers to discredit the former government of Ukraine. We documented Thursday that snipers are a common form of false flag terrorism.
Interestingly, while the new Ukrainian coalition denies that it deployed snipers, it is now accusing someone else - Russia - of deploying the snipers as a false flag event to create chaos.
[This assertion appears to be part of new Western media consensus] AP reports today:
One of the biggest mysteries hanging over the protest mayhem that drove Ukraine's president from power: Who was behind the snipers who sowed death and terror in Kiev?
That riddle has become the latest flashpoint of feuding over Ukraine - with the nation's fledgling government and the Kremlin giving starkly different interpretations of events that could either undermine or bolster the legitimacy of the new rulers.
Ukrainian authorities are investigating the Feb. 18-20 bloodbath, and they have shifted their focus from ousted President Viktor Yanukovych's government to Vladimir Putin's Russia - pursuing the theory that the Kremlin was intent on sowing mayhem as a pretext for military incursion. Russia suggests that the snipers were organized by opposition leaders trying to whip up local and international outrage against the government.
The government's new health minister - a doctor who helped oversee medical treatment for casualties during the protests - told The Associated Press that the similarity of bullet wounds suffered by opposition victims and police indicates the shooters were trying to stoke tensions on both sides and spark even greater violence, with the goal of toppling Yanukovych.
"I think it wasn't just a part of the old regime that (plotted the provocation), but it was also the work of Russian special forces who served and maintained the ideology of the (old) regime," Health Minister Oleh Musiy said.
***
On Tuesday, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov signaled that investigators may be turning their attention away from Ukrainian responsibility.
"I can say only one thing: the key factor in this uprising, that spilled blood in Kiev and that turned the country upside down and shocked it, was a third force," Avakov was quoted as saying by Interfax. "And this force was not Ukrainian."
***
Musiy, who spent more than two months organizing medical units on Maidan, said that on Feb. 20 roughly 40 civilians and protesters were brought with fatal bullet wounds to the makeshift hospital set up near the square. But he said medics also treated three police officers whose wounds were identical.
Forensic evidence, in particular the similarity of the bullet wounds, led him and others to conclude that snipers were targeting both sides of the standoff at Maidan - and that the shootings were intended to generate a wave of revulsion so strong that it would topple Yanukovych and also justify a Russian invasion.

Anti-Semitism and diplomats
On May 12, the well-known blogger Anatoly Shariy, who even before the Euromaidan left Ukraine due to criminal prosecution, published information that the consul of Ukraine in Hamburg Vasily Marushchinets allowed himself anti-Semitic statements on social networks several years ago.
One entry was allegedly in 2013, and another in 2015. Currently, there are no messages to which the journalist referred.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin immediately reacted to these accusations.
"There can be no place for anti-Semites and those who incite interethnic strife either in a civilized society or in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine begins disciplinary proceedings. We will thoroughly understand all the details," Mr. Klimkin wrote on his Twitter page on May 13 …
Power and oligarchs
Quite often, scandals around anti-Semitism arise in Ukraine, connected with accusations of the authorities or oligarchs.
Such a case recently occurred in Odessa, where the head of the local cell of the Right Sector, Tatiana Soykina, publicly stated that Ukraine would belong to Ukrainians, "not Jews. No - to the oligarchy, Glory to Ukraine."
The fact is that in Ukraine some of the country's richest oligarchs are Jews, and radical Ukrainians often associate their nationalities and financial situation with the poverty of the population.
The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov immediately reacted to this statement by Ms. Soikina.
He said that public anti-Semitic calls in Ukraine are unacceptable. Avakov called it "the cave Middle Ages", and the police opened a criminal case on this statement.
Subsequently, Soykina apologized for her words, and also explained her understanding of the problem.
The nationalists, they say, distinguish between the concepts of "Jews" - they are, according to her, representatives of oligarchic clans that plunder Ukraine, and "Jews" are representatives of a friendly nation who are fighting with them for Ukraine.
She also recalled that the "Right Sector" of the Odessa region supported the appointment of the famous cultural figure of Jewish origin Alexander Roitburd as director of the Odessa Art Museum.
The "Right Sector" also recalled that they have always condemned acts of vandalism against monuments to the victims of the Holocaust, and among the members of the organization there are many Jews.
In addition, Ukrainian and foreign journalists often draw attention to the fact that the Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman is of Jewish origin.
Some journalists and activists sometimes hint that the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko may also be of Jewish origin.
Although this is unverified and unconfirmed information, critics of the president often talk about it, and sometimes it escalates into high-profile political scandals.
In particular, this happened in the fall of 2017 with the press secretary of Mikheil Saakashvili, Daria Chizh. In a Facebook post, she hinted at the president's alleged Jewish origins, pointing out the "Waltzman particle" in Poroshenko's character.
Saakashvili then publicly condemned the statements of his speaker and said that he had removed her from work. Ms Chyzh herself removed the post and stated that some had mistakenly regarded it as "anti-Semitic."
During many protests in Kiev in recent years, some of the protesters expressed certain anti-Semitic slogans, allegedly linking them with the Jewish origin of the authorities and Ukrainian oligarchs.

Ukraine hostage siege ends after President Zelensky fulfills gunman's bizarre demand & publicly endorses 2005 Joaquin Phoenix film
The gunman who took some 20 people hostage in a western Ukrainian city has freed them after President Volodymyr Zelensky fulfilled his rather strange wish.
Giving in to the gunman's demands, Zelensky recorded a short video address and released it online. By then, the hostage situation in the city of Lutsk had been unfolding for more than nine hours.
"The film 'Earthlings', 2005. Must watch, everyone," the president says in the clip - exactly as the hostage-taker requested.
While giving in to a terrorist's demands might be a controversial tactic, it seemed to have worked this time. Shortly after Zelensky's address, the gunman released three of his hostages, handing them over to the deputy head of national police. Shortly afterwards, he apparently let the rest of the people go.

Shortly after the suspect was detained, Zelensky thanked everyone involved in rescuing the hostages, stressing that he was particularly glad that no one was killed during the standoff. He also deleted the embarrassing video.
The bus standoff began early on Tuesday, when the armed man, identified as Maksim Krivosh, 44, entered the vehicle. Some 20 people were inside at the time.
Photos circulating online suggest the attacker was armed with a shortened military-grade AK assault rifle, a revolver and at least two grenades, one of which appears to be a training dummy.

The hostage taker called the police shortly after capturing the bus, introducing himself as Maksim Plokhoy (The Bad). He also rolled out demands to top Ukrainian officials, telling them to film videos of themselves acknowledging they were "terrorists under law" and called upon the president to 'promote' the 'Earthlings' animal cruelty documentary from 2005.
Ukrainian police say the suspect had spent over 10 years behind bars for assorted crimes. These included fraud, robbery, extortion and illegal firearms possession, according to Deputy Interior Minister Anton Herashchenko.

Kiev blast that devastated residential building may have been caused by gas leak or BOMB - minister
A deadly explosion in Kiev, which tore through several apartments in a building, may have been caused by an explosive device, Ukraine's interior minister has said. The blast killed at least three people.
Kiev police are working to determine whether the powerful explosion, which happened on Sunday morning at around 10am local time, was caused by a gas leak or a bomb, Arsen Avakov said.
The ministry has deployed 420 employees to the scene of the explosion, located in the southeast of the Ukrainian capital. That number includes rescue workers, firefighters, police officers and others.
The blast originated in one of the apartments of the nine-story building and caused significant damage, with a stack of four apartments caving in. Rescuers found two people dead under the rubble and rescued three others alive. 21 residents were evacuated from the building in the wake of the emergency.
The gas leak explanation has been deemed more likely by the emergency services. Residents told media outlets that the gas meters had been replaced throughout the building just one week prior to the explosion.

Yes, Ukraine's Oligarchs Own the Airwaves, but Their Days Are Numbered
Oligarchs own the airwaves in Ukraine. More than 75 percent of Ukrainians regularly watch TV channels owned by Ukrainian oligarchs Viktor Pinchuk, Ihor Kolomoisky, Dmytro Firtash, and Rinat Akhmetov. But this is hardly news since TV serves as the primary source of information for 58 percent of Ukrainians.
While these oligarchs are the biggest media owners, they are not the only ones. A disturbing trend is that most newly established media are also linked to politicians. Espreso.tv has been linked to former Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk and Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, and the NewsOne TV channel is linked to MP Vadym Rabinovych (also an oligarch) and his business partner MP Yevhen Murayev. The media watchdog Reporters Without Borders notes that Channel 112 "often broadcast[s] pro-Russian interpretation of events" and many regard the station as connected to the funds of former President Viktor Yanukovych's close entourage. However, the channel's official ownership documents show no such links and the channel denies any relationship to any political party.
Yet the picture isn't entirely hopeless. While oligarchs may dominate television, the numbers of viewers is declining and so is trust in television news. Oligarchs do not dominate ownership of top newspapers or online news, and trust in online news is on the rise….

Good point.
Batalion Azov controls the port of Mariupol and this may be the route used for trafficking girls. This is the group formed by Arsen Avakov. He became wealthy after the 2014 coup and is the Minister of Internal Affairs which means he is in charge of all police forces in Ukraine including the SBU (former KGB). He is worth $100 million dollars.
The Azov group has been involved with organ trafficking and this is often associated with people trafficking, perhaps because to do this you have to have no respect for human life. The reason that Ukraine created a fake war with Donbass is so that thousands of young men could be killed to supply organs for sale. Not to mention that the chaos near the front made it easy to kidnap girls and women for trafficking. This is a business that is often associated with warzones.

two year old article is still informative

Oligarchs do not dominate ownership of top newspapers or online news, and trust in online news is on the rise. In fact, only two of the five top news websites are owned by oligarchs; the same figure is true for print outlets. Outside of television, there is real competition, and a growing number of people get their news online.....

Ukraine President Poroshenko gets LIFE behind bars for war crimes
June 24, 2018
A special war crimes tribunal established in the breakaway Lugansk People's Republic has found guilty and sentenced eight criminal defendants. They are all current or former members of the coup regime which came to power in Kiev in February 2014.
The "Ukrainian People's Tribunal" was organized in March of this year at the initiative of a group of lawyers in Ukraine's war-ravaged Donbass region, of which Lugansk forms a part. Although such a body is not provided for in Ukraine's constitution, the organizers say the trial was run in accordance with Ukrainian legal procedures and all judges were Ukrainian citizens.
Russian news outlet RIA Novosti reported the list of those convicted as follows:
In addition to [Ukrainian President Petro] Poroshenko, the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov, the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Alexander Turchynov, the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andrey Parubiy, the head of the Defense Ministry Stepan Poltorak and the head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces Viktor Muzhenko, as well as the former Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and the acting head Cabinet of Ministers Vladimir Groysman were convicted. All of them were sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment.
