Finland is Now Led by a Government of Under-35 Millenial Women, Has Majority-Female Cabinet
Finland's new leftist coalition government has appointed a women-majority cabinet with women taking twelve of the ministerial positions, with seven for men.
The new government, which consists of five parties, all of which are led by women and all but one are led by women from the millennial generation, announced the ministerial appointees on Tuesday under the new leadership of leftist Social Democrat Prime Minister Sanna Marin, Reuters reports.
The leaders of the five parties who make up the ruling coalition are now ministers, with new Centre Party leader Katri Kulmuni becoming finance minister while the leaders of the Greens, the Left Alliance, and the Swedish People's party remain in their ministerial positions occupied in the previous government.
Ms Kulmuni, the 32-year-old new Centre Party leader, is known for embracing green issues such as climate change but wanting policies that use businesses to reach a carbon-neutral target for Finland by 2035.
34-year-old Interior Minister and Green Party leader Maria Ohisalo, meanwhile, has said in the past that she and her party are supportive of the decriminalization of the use of all illegal narcotics, a move that was not supported by former Prime Minister Antti Rinne.
Finland's Minister of Education, 32-year-old Left Alliance leader Le Andersson, also supports the decriminalisation of cannabis and is a self-professed Marxist who stated in 2014 that she "understood" animal rights attacks on fur farms despite the attacks being illegal, claiming that she was on a "quest for veganism."
The last millennial among the party leaders is 34-year-old Prime Minister Sanna Marin herself, who has also described herself as a leftist and addresses her party colleagues as "comrades."
Finland's youngest ever Prime Minister, and the current youngest world leader, was raised by her mother and her mother's lesbian partner after her biological parents separated when she was a child and once stated that she was from a "rainbow family."
Known as being far to the left within her own social democratic party, Prime Minister Marin is expected by many, including Finnish broadcaster Yle, to outline a much further to the left policy than her predecessor.
Marin faces her first challenge as Finnish leader next week when a confidence motion in the new government is expected to be held in the Finnish parliament on Tuesday.
While Marin handily won a vote to confirm her head of government by 99 to 70 earlier this week, a total of 30 MPs were not present during the vote.

Q Research General #9546: FISA Brings Down The House Edition
Strike-Hit Finland Appoints World's Youngest Prime Minister, Moves Further Left
Sanna Marin of Finland's left-wing Social Democratic Party is to be the next Prime Minister of the sparsely populated Nordic nation of Finland, and will be the youngest serving head of government worldwide.
The elevation to Prime Minister is the culmination of Marin's swift rise in Finnish politics, with the 34-year-old going from local mayor, to member of parliament, to transport minister, to government leader in less than a decade.
Finnish broadcaster YLE reports Marin, who addresses her party colleagues as "comrades", will move the already left-wing government further to the left, and is a "red-green and liberal ideologue".
Marin will now be confirmed as Prime Minister and leader of the Finnish government, an increasingly fractious left-green coalition of five small parties, in the coming days. The focus of the new government will be "restoring trust" after a series of scandals and strikes, and will continue to be comprised of Marin's Social Democrats, the Left Alliance, the Green League, the Centre Party, and a left-liberal leaning party representing the interest of Finland's Swedish-speaking minority.
As well as being the youngest serving head of government worldwide, Marin will also be Finland's youngest ever leader, and their third female Prime Minister. All government parties in Finland are presently led by women.
The outgoing Prime Minister, former union leader Antti Rinne, was pushed out of office last week after losing a vote of no confidence in his leadership. He was blamed for a poorly handled pay dispute at Finland's national post office. His government was only six months old, having been formed after the previous centre-right coalition government collapsed over its failure to deliver a programme of public reform including improving health care provision while reducing the government budget.
Reuters reports Finland is facing a new wave of strikes starting today, with major factories shutting down production which follows strikes by the postal service and sympathy strikes in other industries in recent months.
Marin's Social Democrats grabbed headlines last month after one of its politicians was discovered to have faked a racist incident, claiming he had been told to "go back to Somalia". He subsequently claimed that while he had indeed lied and created the hoax, it was only because he was "angry" and wanted to reflect on something "real" in society.
While the coalition of cooperating small left-parties presently rules Finland, the anti-mass migration and anti-European Union True Finns (Perussuomalaiset) party presently tops the polls as the most popular in Finland, enjoying nearly a quarter of national support and a clear ten-point lead over the much smaller but governing Social Democrats.
Despite it having the broadest support of any single Finnish party, the True Finns remain unable to form a national government, as they lack a network of other, smaller parties to build a governing coalition as the Social Democrats do in their centrist and green allies.

German Ex-spy chief demands truth about Merkel's health
12:00AM JULY 13, 2019
The former head of Germany's domestic intelligence service has demanded an explanation of Angela Merkel's shaking spells as the Chancellor tweaked diplomatic protocol so she could sit during the national anthem.
Hans-Georg Maassen, who stood down from the domestic spy agency in November, said the public ought to be told if their leader was in poor health.
He was the first senior figure to break the taboo on discussing the Chancellor's physical condition, amid speculation that she may have a long-term illness.
"The state of a political leader's health is not a private matter," Dr Maassen, 56, tweeted. "The people in Germany have a right to know whether their leader is still physically in a position to fulfil her office with all her strength."
Over the past month Mrs Merkel, 64, trembled uncontrollably while separately welcoming President Zelensky of Ukraine and Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne to Berlin. She had another episode during the confirmation event for her new justice minister, Christine Lambrecht, last week. The spell lasted for more than two minutes.
On Thursday, in a break with convention, she was seated on a dais as she received Mette Frederiksen, 41, the new Danish Prime Minister, with military honours in Berlin. After the ceremony, Mrs Merkel said wryly that she was approaching her 65th birthday and "you don't get any younger".
She added: "You may assume that I know the responsibility my office entails, and act accordingly as regards my health. I too as a human being have a personal interest in being healthy and looking after my health."
The Chancellor's aides have put the three recent bouts of tremors down to dehydration and worry. She insisted this week that she was "fine" and "capable of performing" but conceded she was still in a "phase of processing" the first of her attacks and that the problem might last some time.
"Clearly it is not over yet, but there has been progress and I must now live with it for a while," she said. "But I'm faring very well and there is no cause to worry about me."
Medical experts suggested that her symptoms did not resemble more localised tremors associated with Parkinson's disease, and may be psychosomatic.
Peter Roberts, emeritus professor of pharmacology at the University of Bristol, said the official account of Mrs Merkel's condition was plausible. "An effect caused by dehydration followed by anxiety that it may occur again might be the cause," he said. "The stress response is a basic survival mechanism - fight or flight - that kicks in as soon as a threat is perceived, including fear that something may happen, such as uncontrollable shaking."

Merkel sits through official ceremony after trembling spells
Angela Merkel sat through national anthems on Thursday during an official ceremony, as the German chancellor sought to prevent a repeat of uncontrollable shaking with a rare change of protocol.
After greeting Denmark's new Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at the portico of the chancellery, a smiling Merkel walked her over to a podium where both leaders took their seats.
The unusual move came a day after a similar ceremony when the German chancellor was seen shaking involuntarily for the third time in public in less than a month, reviving questions over her health.
Merkel began trembling as national anthems were being played at the reception of Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne.

Next! the third shaking attack!
Just german sauce
On Wednesday, Merkel had suffered another tremor attack at the reception of Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne in Berlin - the third in three weeks in public. She then assured the public that she was doing well: "You don't have to worry.
So Merkel now also explained the new attack on Wednesday. She was still in the processing phase. "It's obviously not quite over yet, but progress is being made. And I have to live with it for a while now," she said, "I believe that one day it will also go away as it has come. The question of whether Merkel has been under medical treatment in the past three weeks has remained unanswered.

Angela Merkel seen shaking for third time in less than a month
Merkel, 64, trembled as she stood next to Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne during an appearance in Berlin on Wednesday.
Afterwards Merkel said she was "fine," adding that she has been "working through some things" since she was first seen shaking during a June 18 ceremony with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Chancellor Angela Merkel had another tremor on Wednesday. During the military honours for the Prime Minister of Finland, Antti Rinne, in the court of honour in front of the Chancellery, Merkel trembled while playing the anthems. Eyewitnesses reported on Wednesday that she had trembled again for a long time while playing the national anthems on the podium. This time, however, the attack was not as strong as in previous cases.

'Women in majority': Finland's govt led by Social Democratic PM Rinne sworn in
Published time: 6 Jun, 2019 16:04
Edited time: 6 Jun, 2019 16:26
Finland's new center-left coalition government was sworn in on Thursday. The country's first Social Democratic prime minister in 16 years is assuming office along with a Cabinet where women are in the majority.
The 19-member Cabinet of Prime Minister Antti Rinne was approved in the 200-seat Eduskunta legislature in Helsinki, after which President Sauli Niinisto appointed it. Eleven of the Cabinet members are female, reflecting Nordic gender equality in the nation's politics, AP said.
The Social Democratic Party, the Center Party, the Greens, the Left Alliance and the Swedish People's Party of Finland clinched a coalition deal on Monday after weeks of intensive talks.
The five parties muster a comfortable 117 seats in the Parliament. Rinne's Social Democrats became Finland's largest party in the April 14 general election by an extremely narrow margin over the populist Finns Party.

Nationalist Finns Party second largest in Finnish election - Social Democrats won by 0.1% margin, and will form coalition government
The leader of Finland's centre-left Social Democratic party (SDP), Antti Rinne, declared victory in the general election after almost complete results showed his party winning by a razor-thin margin with 17.7%.
"For the first time since 1999 we are the largest party in Finland... SDP is the prime minister party", Rinne said after more than 99.5% of votes were counted.
The nationalist, Eurosceptic Finns party (PS) was in second place with 17.6%, according to nearly complete results published by the justice ministry.
If final results confirm the outcome, Rinne could become Finland's first left-wing prime minister since 2003. But the process of putting together a coalition could be drawn out because of a fragmented parliament. The very close result will make negotiations to form the next coalition government particularly fraught.
Earlier results in the election, which comes amid mounting concern among voters over the future of the country's expensive welfare system, had also given strong showings for the centre-right National Coalition party, chaired by the outgoing finance minister, Petteri Orpo, and the Centre party, of the prime minister, Juha Sipilä.
A strong showing by the Finns party will complicate coalition talks, with most party leaders ruling out any cooperation with it.
On Sunday night Rinne said he "has questions" for the Finns Party and did not rule out cooperating with them to form a majority.

A strong showing by the Finns party will complicate coalition talks, with most party leaders ruling out any cooperation with it.
On Sunday night Rinne said he "has questions" for the Finns Party and did not rule out cooperating with them to form a majority.
"Some of the questions will be about values", Rinne told Finnish media. "The Social Democratic Party's values are very important, it's the glue that will hold the government together."
Rinne's party could also choose to form a coalition with the conservative National Coalition party (KoK), which came in third place with 17%.
At stake in the election is the future shape of Finland's welfare system, a pillar of the Nordic social model, which those on the left want to preserve through tax rises, and the centre-right wants to cut because of rising costs.
The Finns party is anti-immigration and calls for limits on environmental policies, arguing the nation - which has 5.5 million inhabitants - has gone too far in addressing issues such as climate change at its own expense.
"Finland isn't capable of saving the world", its leader, Jussi Halla-aho, said at one of the party's news conferences. "We have already done our part."
With the European parliament election less than two months away, the Finnish ballot is also being watched in Brussels. A strong result for the Finns party could bolster a nationalist bloc threatening to shake up EU policymaking.
