Who Pushed Trump Toward War With Iran? A Deep Dive Into His inner circle
U.S. President Donald Trump's advisers include a range of pundits, billionaires, far-right politicians and national security officials. Many encouraged the strike - for years, in some cases - while some of his closest confidants publicly opposed military action
U.S. President Donald Trump's landmark decision to launch U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear targets overnight marks the culmination of a decade-long campaign to influence the president toward the unprecedented move.
Notoriously impulsive and transactional, Trump has relied on a set of voices both inside and outside the White House to advise him on both the benefits and drawbacks of making the call.
In order to understand how Trump decided to forever change U.S. foreign policy and the Middle East as we know it, one must understand the players within his orbit and how Trump took their respective advice on the ramifications - whether relating to the United States, Israel or his own domestic base of support.
The four top dogs
Trump addressed the nation with three advisors flanking him: Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State (and acting National Security Advisor) Marco Rubio. U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, who did not appear alongside Trump, still holds significant cache with Trump and was present in the Situation Room during the strikes.
Choosing to have the three men by his side demonstrated Trump attempting to show a totality of support from his team, which is particularly relevant considering each of the men have been reportedly been swaying Trump toward diplomacy over military action in recent months.
JD Vance, who has increasingly emerged as Trump's heir apparent among his base, has long been a critic of American nation-building projects informed by his military service during the Iraq War. He went so far as to cite Trump's opposition to starting wars in his 2023 endorsement of Trump. He also warned during the 2024 campaign that an Israel-Iran conflict was the most likely path toward World War III.
Over the past several months, Vance has effectively led the internal camp pushing Trump toward Iran diplomacy over military action. In recent days, however, Vance made it clear he will follow Trump no matter what he decides. His top aide, Andy Baker, was in the Situation Room during the strikes.

Trump 'gutting the Deep State' inside National Security Council - media
More than 100 staffers have been abruptly fired, sources involved in the reorganization said on Friday
The Trump administration has moved to drastically overhaul the National Security Council (NSC), reportedly placing more than 100 officials on administrative leave andslashing the powerful advisory and coordination body's staff, as part of what one White House source described asan effort to "gut the Deep State."
Multiple reports on Friday confirmed that staff across nearly all NSC directorates -including those handling key global hotspots such as Ukraine, Iran and the Indo-Pacific== - were dismissed with little notice. According to CNN and Reuters, employees received emails late Friday afternoon informing them they had just 30 minutes to clear their desks.
An administration official described the reorganization to Axios as astrategic shift aimed at reducing bureaucratic interferenceand concentrating foreign policy decision-making at the highest levels of government, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio - who is also serving as acting national security adviser - playing a central role.
"The NSC is the ultimate Deep State," the official said. "It's Marco vs. the Deep State. We're gutting the Deep State."
Rubio, who has led efforts to downsize the State Department and USAID, emphasized that the goal is toreturn the NSC to its "original purpose"as a coordinating body, not a policy-shaping institution.
"The NSC will now be better positioned to collaborate with agencies," he told Axios in a statement, without confirming the exact scope of the cuts.
According to officials who spoke anonymously, theplan is to cut the NSC staff to around 50 people- down from more than 300 under the Biden administration, and even below the leaner structure Trump implemented during his first term.Entire directorates may be eliminatedor consolidated, including those overseeing Africa policy and NATO coordination, multiple sources told Reuters.
Senior administration officials reportedly cited Trump's recent reversal of Syria sanctions as an example of thenew top-down model. "The president gave the order. The cabinet followed. No need for endless layers of committees," one official told Axios."This is reverse workflow in action."
The dismissals came just weeks after Trump fired former national security adviser Mike Waltz and nominated him as ambassador to the United Nations, following leaks involving sensitive military plans. Waltz had reportedly lost influence after inadvertently inviting a journalist into a private chat about Yemen airstrikes.
The abrupt reorganization, carried out just ahead of Memorial Day weekend, marks one of the most sweeping institutional shake-ups of Trump's second term to date.It reportedly affected both career officials and Trump's own political appointees.
The White House did not comment publicly on the staffing decisions, but Rubio is expected to continue leading the NSC indefinitely, with deputy national security advisers Andy Baker and Robert Gabriel assisting him under the new structure.

One minute later, a person identified only as "MAR"-the secretary of state is Marco Antonio Rubio-wrote, "Mike Needham for State," apparently designating the current counselor of the State Department as his representative. At that same moment, a Signal user identified as "JD Vance" wrote, "Andy Baker for VP." One minute after that, "TG" (presumably Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, or someone masquerading as her) wrote, "Joe Kent for DNI." Nine minutes later, "Scott B"-apparently Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, or someone spoofing his identity, wrote, "Dan Katz for Treasury." At 4:53 p.m., a user called "Pete Hegseth" wrote, "Dan Caldwell for DoD." And at 6:34 p.m., "Brian" wrote "Brian McCormack for NSC." One more person responded: "John Ratcliffe" wrote at 5:24 p.m. with the name of a CIA official to be included in the group. I am not publishing that name, because that person is an active intelligence officer.
The principals had apparently assembled. In all, 18 individuals were listed as members of this group, including various National Security Council officials; Steve Witkoff, President Trump's Middle East and Ukraine negotiator; Susie Wiles, the White House chief of staff; and someone identified only as "S M," which I took to stand for Stephen Miller. I appeared on my own screen only as "JG."
That was the end of the Thursday text chain.
After receiving the Waltz text related to the "Houthi PC small group," I consulted a number of colleagues. We discussed the possibility that these texts were part of a disinformation campaign, initiated by either a foreign intelligence service or, more likely, a media-gadfly organization, the sort of group that attempts to place journalists in embarrassing positions, and sometimes succeeds. I had very strong doubts that this text group was real, because I could not believe that the national-security leadership of the United States would communicate on Signal about imminent war plans. I also could not believe that the national security adviser to the president would be so reckless as to include the editor in chief of The Atlantic in such discussions with senior U.S. officials, up to and including the vice president.
The next day, things got even stranger.
At 8:05 a.m. on Friday, March 14, "Michael Waltz" texted the group: "Team, you should have a statement of conclusions with taskings per the Presidents guidance this morning in your high side inboxes." (High side, in government parlance, refers to classified computer and communications systems.) "State and DOD, we developed suggested notification lists for regional Allies and partners. Joint Staff is sending this am a more specific sequence of events in the coming days and we will work w DOD to ensure COS, OVP and POTUS are briefed."
At this point, a fascinating policy discussion commenced. The account labeled "JD Vance" responded at 8:16: "Team, I am out for the day doing an economic event in Michigan. But I think we are making a mistake." (Vance was indeed in Michigan that day.) The Vance account goes on to state, "3 percent of US trade runs through the suez. 40 percent of European trade does. There is a real risk that the public doesn't understand this or why it's necessary. The strongest reason to do this is, as POTUS said, to send a message."
The Vance account then goes on to make a noteworthy statement, considering that the vice president has not deviated publicly from
