The template was provided by ex-MI6 Director Richard Dearlove, Halper's friend and business partner. Sitting in winged chairs in London's venerable Garrick Club, according toThe Washington Post, Dearlove told fellow MI6 veteran Christopher Steele, author of the famous "golden showers" opposition research dossier, that Trump "reminded him of a predicament he had faced years earlier, when he was chief of station for British intelligence in Washington and alerted US authorities to British information that a vice presidential hopeful had once been in communication with the Kremlin."

Apparently, one word from the Brits was enough to make the candidate in question step down. When that didn't work with Trump, Dearlove and his colleagues ratcheted up the pressure to make him see the light. A major scandal was thus born - or, rather, a very questionable scandal.

Besides Dearlove, Steele, and Halper, a bon-vivant known as "The Walrus" for his impressive girth, other participants include:

Robert Hannigan, former director Government Communications Headquarters, GCHQ, UK equivalent of the NSA.
Alexander Downer, top Australian diplomat.
Andrew Wood, ex-British ambassador to Moscow.
Joseph Mifsud, Maltese academic.
James Clapper, ex-US Director of National Intelligence.
John Brennan, former CIA Director (and now NBC News analyst).
A few things stand out about this august group. One is its in-bred quality. After helping to run an annual confab known as the Cambridge Intelligence Seminar, Dearlove and Halper are now partners in a private venture calling itself "The Cambridge Security Initiative." Both are connected to another London-based intelligence firm known as Hakluyt & Co. Halper is also connected via two books he wrote with Hakluyt representative Jonathan Clarke and Dearlove has a close personal friendship with Hakluyt founder Mike Reynolds, yet another MI6 vet. Alexander Downer served a half-dozen years on Hakluyt's international advisory board, while Andrew Wood is linked to Steele via Orbis Business Intelligence, the private research firm that Steele helped found, and which produced the anti-Trump dossier, and where Wood now serves as an unpaid advisor.

Everyone, in short, seems to know everyone else. But another thing that stands out about this group is its incompetence. Dearlove and Halper appear to be old-school paranoids for whom every Russian is a Boris Badenov or a Natasha Fatale. In February 2014, Halper notified US intelligence that Mike Flynn, Trump's future national security adviser, had grown overly chummy with an Anglo-Russian scholar named Svetlana Lokhova whom Halper suspected of being a spy - suspicions that Lokhova convincingly argues are absurd. There were international benefits from a Trump win, it stresses. Putin would be able in clandestine fashion to dominate any US-Russia bilateral talks, to deconstruct the White House's negotiating position, and to pursue bold foreign policy initiatives on Russia's behalf, it says.

Other parts of the multi-page report deal with non-Trump themes. It says sanctions imposed by the US after Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea have contributed to domestic tensions. The Kremlin should seek alternative ways of attracting liquidity into the Russian economy, it concludes.

The document recommends the reorientation of trade and hydrocarbon exports towards China. Moscow's focus should be to influence the US and its satellite countries, it says, so they drop sanctions altogether or soften them.

'Spell-binding' documents

Andrei Soldatov, an expert on Russia's spy agencies andauthor of The Red Web, said the leaked material "reflects reality". "It's consistent with the procedures of the security services and the security council," he said. "Decisions are always made like that, with advisers providing information to the president and a chain of command."

He added: "The Kremlin micromanages most of these operations. Putin has made it clear to his spies since at least 2015 that nothing can be done independently from him. There is no room for independent action."Putin decided to release stolen DNC emailsfollowing a security council meeting in April 2016, Soldatov said, citing his own sources. Sir Andrew Wood, the UK's former ambassador in Moscow and an associate fellow at the Chatham House thinktank,described the documents as "spell-binding". "Theyreflect the sort of discussionand recommendations you would expect. There is a complete misunderstanding of the US and China. They are written for a person [Putin] who can't believe he got anything wrong."

Wood added: "There is no sense Russia might have made a mistake by invading Ukraine. The report is fully in line with the sort of thingI would expect in 2016, and even more so now. There is a good deal of paranoia. They believe the US is responsible for everything. This view is deeply dug into the soul of Russia's leaders."

Trump did not initially respond to a request for comment. Later,Liz Harrington, his spokesperson, issued a statement on his behalf.

Sailors and Marines Have 90 Days to Get Vaccinated or Face Punishment

Sailors and Marines now have 90 days to get vaccinated against COVID-19 or risk disobeying a lawful order, a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the maritime branches' top leaders said in a series of messages released Tuesday and Wednesday.

Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday, and Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. David Berger told their service members that they are ordering any sailor or Marine who has not received the shots to get them now.

"The order to obtain full vaccination is a lawful order," Gilday, the Navy's top officer, wrote in his message.

For sailors who refuse the shots, Del Toro's message lays out a series of steps the Navy will take to convince them to get vaccinated.

First, commands should "provide counseling regarding refusal to take the COVID-19 vaccine [to] include access to a healthcare professional to answer questions regarding the risks of COVID-19 and the benefits of COVID-19 vaccinations," the message says. After that counseling, however, the person will receive a note in their service record ordering them to get vaccinated, the message adds.

Service members who remain unvaccinated after 90 days will be referred to the COVID Consolidated Disposition Authority, or CCDA, the message explains.

The new CCDA will decide what happens to sailors who refuse the vaccine. Although this new position will be able to use "the full range of administrative and disciplinary actions," Del Toro noted that "until further notice" he is not letting the CCDA start "non-judicial punishment, courts-martial, or administrative separation in cases of Navy Service Members refusing the vaccine."

For Marines, the process is a bit simpler: Get the shot or your commander will decide a punishment for failing to follow a lawful order.

Although the commandant's message did not specifically mention it, Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Andrew Wood noted that Marines will be offered the same access to medical professionals to answer their questions and concerns as their Navy counterparts.

To date, Military.com has reported on only one person who has been forced out of the service for violating COVID-related rules. A Marine corporal received a general discharge in late July 2021 after she refused to wear a face mask despite being unvaccinated.

According to the latest Department of Defense data, the Navy has fully vaccinated 85% of its sailors and the Corps has fully vaccinated 64% of all Marines.

The total number of COVID deaths in the military was at 40 as of Sept. 1, according to the DoD.

The mandatory vaccine policy marks a sharp departure from the previous approach to getting sailors and Marines vaccinated, which left it up to individual commanders. The result of that approach has been vaccination rates that vary widely between commands and services. To address lagging rates, some commands offered incentives such as four-day weekend passes for getting vaccinated. Meanwhile, some Navy commanders described reaching out to experts or doctors to assuage concerns individual sailors had over the vaccines.

Chaplain leaders in the Navy previously noted that they have seen a surge in interest over religious exemptions to the vaccine. While that avenue remains open to sailors and Marines, Capt. Richard Ryan, the chaplain overseeing the Pacific fleet, told Military.com last month that though chaplains in individual Navy commands will be charged with determining the sincerity of sailors' beliefs, the deputy chief of naval operations for manpower, personnel, training and education ultimately will decide who gets an exemption and who doesn't.

'Right-Wing Death Squad': Active-Duty Marine Plotted to Bomb DNC, Murder Black People, Feds Say

An active-duty U.S. Marine came under federal investigation for allegedly plotting with at least two others to assassinate minorities, drug users, and employees of the Democratic National Committee with explosives, rocket launchers, and automatic rifles.

That's according to a newly unsealed FBI search warrant affidavit obtained by The Daily Beast, which indicates USMC Private First Class Travis Owens and his partners in the unrealized murder plot were influenced by Timothy McVeigh, the former U.S. Army soldier behind the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing that left 168 people dead and injured nearly 700. The document also states that one of the suspects had links to the Atomwaffen Division, a violent neo-Nazi group linked to at least five murders. A handful of active service members and veterans have been identified as being members of Atomwaffen, which calls for the armed overthrow of the U.S. government.

The investigation began in late August 2019, when a tipster contacted the FBI about disturbingly violent conversations they had observed in a private Facebook Messenger chat group named "Right Wing Death Squad." According to the FBI, three men were behind the troubling chats: James Wisdom of Arkansas; food service worker Jason D'Juan Garfield-also of Arkansas-who went by the noms de guerre "Moon Man" and "Jugger Bugger;" and Owens, a Marine Corps E-1 from Arkansas stationed at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.

"Rhetoric in the private chat messages was consistent with racially motivated extremism ideology, to include aspirational violence against religious and racial minorities," states the affidavit, which was signed by Special Agent Ryan Crump of the FBI Little Rock Joint Terrorism Task Force.

The only one of the three who has been charged to date is Garfield, who in May 2021 was sentenced to 78 months in prison for illegal gun possession. Charges against Wisdom and Owens have not been filed, a DOJ spokesperson confirmed to The Daily Beast, and neither has a lawyer listed in court records. Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Jennen, the prosecutor handling the case, declined to comment.

Owens, however, was kicked out of the Marine Corps in April 2020, "after news of the NCIS/FBI investigation came to light," USMC spokesman Capt. Andrew Wood told The Daily Beast.

"Participation in supremacist or extremist organizations or activities is a violation of Department of Defense and Marine Corps orders and will lead to mandatory processing for separation following the first substantiated incident," Wood said in an email. "The Marine Corps is clear on its stance as it relates to racial hatred or extremism: There is no place for either in the Marine Corps. Our strength is derived from the individual excellence of every Marine regardless of background. Bigotry and racial extremism run contrary to our core values."

A defamation trial against Christopher Steele began in London on Monday, with revelations of the ex-spy's efforts to disseminate his infamous dossier through the late Sen. John McCain and a longtime ally of the Clintons.
A lawyer for a Russian businessman suing Steele read his text messages with Strobe Talbott, the former president of Brookings Institution, and with David Kramer, a former State Department official who worked with McCain.
In another text, Steele told Sir Andrew Wood, a former British diplomat, that McCain was 'compromised' because he was provided a copy of the dossier.
In one message after Donald Trump's election win in November 2016, Steele asked Strobe Talbott, who then served as president of the prestigious Brookings Institution, how he wanted to handle "the package" - a reference to the dossier.
In another message from early 2017, Steele urged David Kramer, an associate of Sen. John McCain's, not to tell reporters that Steele had been a source for another journalist on a dossier-related story.
And in a message weeks earlier, Steele told Sir Andrew Wood, the former British ambassador to Russia, that McCain was "compromised" by being given a copy of the dossier.
Lawyers for a Russian tech executive, Aleksej Gubarev, read the text exchanges and others during the first day of Steele's trial to establish that the ex-MI6 officer was deeply involved in the dissemination of information from the dossier.
Gubarev is suing Steele for defamation over the dossier, which BuzzFeed published on Jan. 10, 2017.
Andrew Caldecott, the lead lawyer for Gubarev, said that Talbott, who served as deputy secretary of state in the Clinton administration, called Steele in August 2016 inquiring about his investigation of the Trump campaign.
"Mr. Talbott telephones Mr Steele out of the blue in August 2016, having heard about his work and offers advice if needed," Caldecott said, according to a copy of his remarks obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
Steele and Wood took Talbott up on his offer in early November 2016, just after the FBI cut ties with Steele because he served as a source for Mother Jones reporter David Corn.

Anticipation Over U.S. Attorney John Durham's Investigation Builds

Anticipation over United States Attorney John Durham's investigation is growing as Attorney General William Barr recently hinted he is building the case to prosecute people.

"He is looking to bring to justice people who are engaged in abuses if he can show that they were criminal violations, and that's what the focus is on," Barr told Fox News's Laura Ingraham on Thursday. "He's diligently pursuing it."

The comments have heartened those who have long awaited consequences for current and former officials who investigated the Trump campaign on the basis of a discredited dossier put together by ex-British spy Christopher Steele that was funded by the Clinton campaign.

Barr tapped Durham last year to investigate the origins of the Obama administration's investigation into the Trump campaign, as well as actions taken up through President Trump's inauguration. Last fall, Durham upgraded his investigation to a criminal one.

Durham relocated from Connecticut to Washington, D.C., in March, so that he could continue work on his investigation amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Time is of the essence, with an election looming in November. Barr is reportedly looking to have the investigation finished by the end of summer.

"The closer we get to election day, the more any charges he brought would be framed by the media as kind of a Trump campaign stunt," former U.S. Attorney Andrew McCarthy told WMAL on Saturday.

"So I really think it's in his interest, especially after pouring two years of effort into this, to get with it by the late spring at the latest, because we all know if the president doesn't win reelection, this investigation is going down the memory hole," he said.

"We're getting to the point where a decision has to be made, one way or the other," he added.

Durham is reportedly focusing in on the role of intelligence officials in the investigation of the Trump campaign. Durham's team reportedly began interviews at the CIA earlier this year.

Durham's team is looking at former CIA Director John Brennan's role in the investigation - whether he pushed for an intelligence community assessment (ICA) more damaging to Trump.

Specifically, Durham's team is also looking into whether Brennan pushed for the ICA to include that Russia had interfered to help Trump, when not all intelligence agencies concurred with the same degree of confidence.

The CIA and the FBI had "high confidence" the interference was aimed at helping Trump, but the National Security Agency only had "moderate confidence." Durham has already met with the former head of NSA, Ret. Admiral Mike Rogers.

Durham's team has reportedly also focused on current and former officials at the National Intelligence Council, a unit at the Director of National Intelligence's office that coordinated the ICA.

Investigators are looking into whether the Steele dossier was used in the ICA, and whether former FBI Director James Comey and former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe insisted on the dossier being a part of the assessment's appendix, according to the Washington Examiner.

The team has also informally requested an interview with Steele through British authorities, who refused the request, according to the WSJ. It is not clear whether the team will now have to take a more formal and lengthier route.

Durham's team has also contacted Sir Andrew Wood, the former British Ambassador to Russia who told the late Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in the fall of 2016 at the Halifax Security Forum in Nova Scotia about the existence of the dossier and arranged to have it sent to his colleague, David Kramer.

Journalist John Solomon recently said in a radio interview that Durham's team has issued multiple grand jury subpoenas.

Barr said although Durham's focus is on prosecution, there will probably be a report as a byproduct of his investigation.

It is not clear what Barr knows of the investigation, but he sounded confident there was wrongdoing.

"My own view is that the evidence shows that we're not dealing with just mistakes or sloppiness," he said. He added:

I think what happened to him was one of the greatest travesties in American history. Without any basis, they started this investigation of his campaign, and even more concerning, actually, is what happened after the campaign, a whole pattern of events while he was president. So I - to sabotage the presidency, and I think that - or at least have the effect of sabotaging the presidency.

Democrats have stepped up attacks on Barr since his interview in response. Progressive watchdog Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) launched a petition calling for Barr to resign the same day his interview aired.

Lets let the late US Senator McCain explain how this worked;

According to McCain, he didn't recall ever having a previous conversation with Sir Andrew Wood, but may have met him before in passing. Chris Brose, a staff member on the Senate Armed Services Committee, and David Kramer, a former assistant secretary of state with Russian expertise, joined McCain and Wood in a room off the main conference hall.......After discussing Russian election interference for a few minutes, Wood explained why he'd approached McCain in the first place..........He told me he knew a former MI6 officer by the name of Christopher Steele, who had been commissioned to investigate connections between the Trump campaign and Russian agents as well as potentially compromising information about the President-elect that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin allegedly possessed,".

The result of this 007 hand-off was the beginning of two and a half years of completely false allegations aimed at overturning the result of the 2016 election. James Comey now disgraced head of the FBI is facing possible prosecution, along with the former head of the CIA John Brennan and James Clapper former Director of National Intelligence, for using as a basis for FISA warrants the "Steele Dossier". The world now knows without question this was a piece of paid for Democratic National Committee opposition research relying on Russian misinformation, collected partly through Ukraine, promoted by Australia, and delivered by a British intelligence official in a venue provided by Canada. Those who have watched all the hearings and waded through the reports know that months before the attacks that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, and the two former Navy SEALs, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, U.S. intelligence agencies had been warning of possible attacks on American personnel and other assets in Benghazi. So many reports were given to the State Department that it is impossible to explain why all of them were ignored. But they were.

According to the January 15, 2014, report by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence ("SSCI"), those repeated warnings began with a June 12, 2012 Defense Intelligence Agency report that noted growing ties between al Qaeda in the Benghazi area and local Libyan terrorists. Another report, less than a week later (June 18), said that conditions were "ripe" for more attacks and that Libya was becoming a "safe haven" for terrorists. Such reports continued in steady stream. One, in August, noted that the "safe havens" were covering more and more territory and warned that terrorist operations might even be strong enough to attack European targets from Libyan bases.

Between March and August of 2012, western targets were attacked at least 20 times in Benghazi by terrorists using increasingly powerful and sophisticated weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades and improvised explosive devices. Several of these assaults were directed at the convoys of foreign diplomatic personnel. On April 10, Ian Martin, in charge of the special United Nations Support Mission in Libya, survived an explosion from a homemade bomb. The convoy of Dominic Asquith, the British ambassador to Libya, was hit by a grenade on June 11. Asquith was not injured, but the United Kingdom promptly closed its mission the next day. During this period terrorists also attacked UN and Red Cross officials and detonated IEDs planted at the American Temporary Mission Facility, the headquarters of Ambassador Stevens.

In March, Eric Nordstrom, the head security officer at the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli, made the first of a series of requests for increased security in the country. His requests, which continued at least into July, were not denied; they were ignored. Later, in June, Ambassador Stevens began making similar requests, which the State Department did not honor; and, as a report by the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence puts it, the Benghazi mission "continued to be understaffed and under-resourced." Colonel Andrew Wood, commander of the Site Security Team (SST) at the Benghazi mission, testified in an October 10, 2012, hearing of the House Oversight Committee that three Mobile Security Deployment (MSD) teams were withdrawn from Benghazi over the course of the year despite Stevens's repeated requests for additional security.

By the time Stevens attended an Emergency Action Committee meeting on August 15, all three of the MSD teams were gone, as was Wood's SST. The EAC is an interagency panel that meets in embassies and other facilities around the world when those facilities face major security threats. And the Benghazi mission was certainly threatened. On August 8, Stevens sent a cable to Washington observing that "a series of violent incidents has dominated the political landscape"; he calls these incidents "targeted and indiscriminate attacks." At the EAC meeting a CIA representative claimed that Benghazi was home to about 10 Islamist training camps, some of them al Qaeda affiliated. At the same meeting, an unnamed "regional security officer" said that he was concerned-justifiably, it turned out-about the mission's ability to defend itself.

About 60 armed terrorists entered the mission unimpeded at 9:42 p.m. on September 11, 2012. They set fire to the barracks holding Libyan militia troops, who were supposedly acting as a "security force," and, minutes later, set fire to the building where Ambassador Stevens was. One of the five Diplomatic Security Service agents on duty immediately relayed the situation to the nearby CIA Annex, the embassy in Tripoli, and the State Department in Washington. Stevens was moved to a "safe room."

Gregory Hicks, the deputy chief of mission in Libya, received a call from Stevens five minutes later, and the ambassador told him the consulate was under attack. Hicks later told the press that he and everyone else in the Libya mission believed it was a terrorist attack "from the get go." At about that time, a security team based in Tripoli consisting of seven men-at least two of them Delta Force operators-was ordered to Benghazi. It had to charter an aircraft to fly there, and didn't arrive at the Benghazi airport until about 1:15 a.m. It spent three hours negotiating with Libyans for transportation and a security escort to get to the Annex.

The McCain connection

The other linked dot is to John McCain's one-time aide, David Kramer.  Kramer is the one who received a copy of the dossier from Steele in a secret-squirrel "spycraft" meeting in London, in December 2016.

Oddly enough, Kramer pops up in a meeting with a visiting Ukrainian parliamentarian in early April 2016, at a time when Alexandra Chalupa had recently (on 25 March 2016) "shared her concerns [about Manafort] with the Ukrainian Ambassador to the U.S."  (Jeff Carlson picked up on this in his 2018 article.)

Chalupa also mentioned to the DNC staff that she had discussed Manafort with the ambassador, when she gave the brief on Manafort on 29 March.  The (rather obsessive) urgency Chalupa was giving this matter probably meant the visiting lawmaker, Olga Bielkov, was briefed on it at the Ukrainian embassy before she held her meetings in April with U.S. officials.

It is thus very likely that David Kramer knew in early April 2016 of Chalupa's, and hence the DNC's, focus on Manafort.  As with so many things related to Russiagate, it seems less random in hindsight that Kramer happened to learn of the dossier from Sir Andrew Wood, long-time British diplomat and former UK ambassador to Russia, at a conference in Canada in November 2016.  It's likely that Kramer was well aware of the Manafort focus long before the 2016 election, and knew the significance the Ukrainians understood the U.S. Democrats to be placing on it.

Kramer is reportedly the source who gave the dossier to BuzzFeed, which published it in January 2017.

In some cases, according to the deposition, Kramer shared the dossier with reporters with Steele's and Simpson's knowledge.

Kramer said Steele asked him to meet with CNN's Bernstein and BuzzFeed's Ken Bensinger.

BuzzFeed published the dossier on Jan. 10, 2017. The website made the controversial decision hours after CNN, in a story co-authored by Bernstein, reported that then-President-elect Donald Trump had been briefed on the salacious allegations in the dossier on Jan. 6, 2017.

"I met with Mr. Bernstein at Mr. Steele's request. And I believe Mr. Bernstein had been in touch with Mr. Steele and so Mr. Steele asked me if I would meet with him and talk with him about it. Since Bernstein was in the U.S. and Steele was in London," said Kramer, who was an executive at the McCain Institute.

However, Fox News reported in August that embattled Justice Department official Bruce Ohr had contact in 2016 with then-colleague Andrew Weissmann, now a top deputy to Special Counsel Robert Mueller, as well as other senior FBI officials about the dossier and the people behind it.

Ohr's network of contacts on the dossier included: anti-Trump former FBI agent Peter Strzok; former FBI lawyer Lisa Page; former deputy director Andrew McCabe; Weissmann and at least one other DOJ official; and a current FBI agent who worked with Strzok on the Russia case.

In a report last week, the Justice Department Inspector General revealed that government-issued phones belonging to Strzok and Page were wiped completely soon after they were terminated from the Mueller probe over anti-Trump bias.

"My mission was essentially to be a go-between and a messenger, to tell the senator and assistants that such a dossier existed," Sir Andrew Wood told Fox News in an exclusive interview with senior executive producer Pamela K. Browne.

Fox News spoke to Wood at the 2017 Halifax International Security Forum in Nova Scotia, Canada. As Britain's ambassador to Moscow from 1995-2000, Wood witnessed the end of Russian President Boris Yeltsin and the rise of Vladimir Putin.

Just after the U.S. presidential election in November 2016, Arizona GOP Sen. McCain spoke at the same security conference. Wood says he was instructed - by former British spy Christopher Steele - to reach out to the senior Republican, whom Wood called "a good man," about the unverified document.

Wood insists that he's never read the dossier that his good friend and longtime colleague prepared. It was commissioned by opposition research firm Fusion GPS and funded by the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign.

These relationships between the team members transcended their changing places of employment and job titles. The following is a short sampling of the dossier network linkage results:

Christopher Steele knew Sir Andrew Wood from his days at the UK Diplomatic Service since 1986. In 2013, Wood had a paid consulting gig with Orbis. Sir Richard Dearlove, the former head of MI6 who promoted the Dossier in UK, Australian, Canadian, and US government circles was Steele's boss in MI6. Steele knew and worked with Paoblo Miller in MI6 since 1994 and Luke Harding from The Guardian since 1996; Harding and Miller were also Orbis and Hakluyt contractors since 2009.

Steele and Chris Burrows worked with Stefan Halper as early as 2005. Steele knew Jonathan Clarke from his days in MI6 and communicated and met him in the US. Burrows knew and communicated with Joseph Mifsud since 2010. Edward Baumgartner had been contracting with Orbis and Hakluyt since 2011. Steel and Burrows knew and worked with Nigel Inkster from MI6 for over twenty years. They continued to work with him when he joined IISS and PS21. Inkster was also Sir Richard Dearlove's deputy in SIS.

Orbis hired US nationals that previously held US government positions. For example, Tatianna Duran, an Orbis Senior Intelligence Analyst, previously worked for the US State Department and had a US government "Secret" security clearance. Tatianna Duran and Nigal Inkster worked together at PS21 and with Ilya Zaslavskiy at the Chatham House.

Judge orders Fusion GPS to disclose details of its dossier work.?The opposition firm has avoided deposition in a dossier-related lawsuit against BuzzFeed.?Lawyer for plaintiff says ruling "gave us everything that we had hoped for."
Representatives of Fusion GPS must answer a broad array of questions about the opposition research firm's role in creating, investigating and disseminating the infamous Steele dossier, a federal judge ruled.
U.S. District Court Judge Ursula Ungaro issued the decision Tuesday in a defamation lawsuit a Russian tech executive filed against BuzzFeed News, which published the dossier on Jan. 10, 2017.
The trial is scheduled to begin in Miami in November.
Ungaro ruled that attorneys for the executive, Aleksej Gubarev, can ask Fusion GPS representatives in a deposition about the firm's dossier clients, its efforts to verify the dossier, its decision to hire dossier author Christopher Steele and its interactions with government officials and media outlets, including BuzzFeed.
Fusion GPS, which was founded by three former Wall Street Journal reporters, has resisted efforts to provide information about its work on the dossier. The firm has claimed that revealing details about its dossier work would violate its confidentiality clauses with its clients as well as its First Amendment rights to political free speech. [snip]
Ungaro largely rejected Fusion's First Amendment objection, saying the firm's business relationships with its clients "are not protected from disclosure by the First Amendment even though the opposition research it conducts on behalf of clients may be political in nature."
"This ruling gave us everything that we had hoped for," Evan Fray-Witzer, a lawyer for Gubarev, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.
"After a year of trying everything they could think of to avoid being deposed, Fusion is finally going to have to sit down and answer our questions," he added. [snip]
Gubarev has vehemently denied the allegations and claims that BuzzFeed was negligent in failing to investigate the claims before publishing the dossier.
BuzzFeed has defended its decision to publish the document, saying it disclosed in an article revealing the dossier that the document had not been verified. The website's editor, Ben Smith, said BuzzFeed published the dossier because the document was in the hands of numerous U.S. government officials and media outlets.
Smith has argued the public had a right to know what information government officials were sharing about Trump.
Gubarev's attorneys have sought to question Fusion GPS executives in order to find out whether the allegations about Gubarev were investigated and whether BuzzFeed News was warned about the accuracy of the claims.
Steele, who is being sued by Gubarev in London, revealed in court filings in 2017 that he had not verified the final dossier memo before BuzzFeed published the document.
Gubarev's lawyers have also sought to find out who provided the dossier to BuzzFeed.
Fusion GPS has denied being BuzzFeed's source. It has been widely speculated that a longtime associate of Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain provided the dossier to BuzzFeed. David Kramer, a former Department of State official, was with McCain when the Republican was first told about the dossier by Sir Andrew Wood, the former U.K. ambassador to Russia and an associate of Steele's.
In late November 2016, Kramer traveled to London on McCain's behalf to meet with Steele. Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson has testified to Congress that he and Steele discussed whether to provide the dossier to Kramer. Simpson told Congress he had long known Kramer and trusted him with the dossier."
