UK military could recruit autistic soldiers
A broader pool of potential candidates would help bridge skills gaps, a senior MP has claimed
The British military could review its recruitment policies to allow it to access a wider pool of people, including those suffering from certain neurological conditions, MP Andrew Murrison has told the Financial Times.
Murrison, who serves as parliamentary under-secretary of state for defence people, veterans and service families, argued that this would help provide the armed forces with skilled professionals amid chronic staffing shortages.
In an interview with the FT published on Wednesday, Murrison explained that "there are pinch points where things are quite serious," adding that the UK military should adopt a more "flexible" approach toward hiring new personnel. The MP stated that with the armed forces placing increasing emphasis on cyberwarfare, it should start "casting the net more widely" to hire "neurodiverse" people.
According to Murrison, while personnel with dyslexia and dyspraxia are already serving in the British military, the door should now be open to candidates with autism, Asperger's, and ADHD. These people may possess skills and attributes which others don't, the lawmaker argued.
Murrison also suggested allowing older personnel to continue serving for longer, as there is "no philosophical barrier as to why we couldn't look at extending the age of retirement."
In June, a government-commissioned analysis revealed that the British military was failing to attract technologically skilled recruits.
The NATO deputy supreme allied commander for Europe, General Tim Radford, also warned last month that London could cease to be a major power within the US-led bloc as its military is "too small."
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, the commander stressed that the modern technology which Britain is betting on cannot fully replace traditional armed forces.
Last month, a survey of British military personnel conducted between September 2022 and February 2023 indicated that only 42% of troops were satisfied with service life. Among the main grievances highlighted by the poll were poor housing conditions and low wages.
Commenting on the state of affairs in the British military, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace acknowledged back in January that it was "hollowed out and underfunded."

'F*** That' - Boris Johnson Refuses to Step Down as Resignations Continue
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has reportedly vowed to continue to fight for his political life and attempt to cling on to the keys of Number 10 Downing Street after two high-profile resignations from his cabinet and a string of junior ministers quitting their posts have rocked confidence in his ability to hold onto power.
In dramatic Westminster fashion, Health Secretary Sajid Javid and Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak resigned within minutes of each other on Tuesday evening following the admission from Boris Johnson that he was aware of historic sex pest allegations made against Christopher Pincher MP and despite this, still elevated him to become his deputy chief whip.
When pressed on whether the resignations of Javid and Sunak would precipitate his own departure from government, Mr Johnson told an aid on Tuesday evening: "F*** that", Britain's paper of record, The Times of London reported.
Continuing into the morning, a series of junior government ministers and other officials have also resigned, including Parliamentary private secretaries Jonathan Gullis, Saqib Bhatti, Nicola Richards, Virginia Crosbie, Laura Trott, Tory Party vice-chairman Bim Afolami, and trade envoys to Morrocco and Kenya, Andrew Murrison and Theodora Clarke.
Three ministers have also tendered their resignations, including Solicitor General Alex Chalk, and education ministers Robin Walker and Will Quince. Economic Secretary to the Treasury, the sixth-most senior ministerial post in the Treasury, MP John Glen also quit his governmental post on Wednesday morning, saying that the "country deserves better" than the "poor judgement" shown by Mr Johnson.
Announcing his departure from the government on Wednesday morning, Mr Quince said that he felt it necessary to resign after spreading false narratives surrounding Johnson's knowledge of the accusations against Pincher fed to him from Downing Street.
Quince said that he had been given a "categorical assurance" that the PM was not aware of such allegations, yet, on the following day this was reversed with Number 10 claiming that the PM had "forgot" being briefed and Johnson apologising for promoting Pincher.

Iran 'executes ex-defence employee accused of spying for US'
Iran has reportedly executed one of its former ministry of defence employees suspected of spying for the US.
Jalal Hajizavar was a contract employee for Tehran's aerospace organisation, according to reports on Saturday.
He left his post nine years ago and was convicted by a military court after an investigation which discovered documents and spying equipment at his home, according to the IRIB news agency.
It claims he was executed at the Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj, west of Tehran.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump says he will impose additional sanctions on Iran in an effort to prevent the country from obtaining nuclear weapons.
The US president, who spoke to reporters at the White House before leaving for Camp David, said: "In some cases we are going slowly, but in other cases we are moving rapidly."
He had earlier considered military action after Iran shot down a US drone, but decided against it at the last minute.
Although he later said on Saturday, that military action "is always on the table" against Iran.
But he also indicated he was open to reversing the escalation, adding he was willing to quickly reach a deal with
Iran, that he said would bolster the country's flagging economy.
He said: "We will call it 'let's make Iran great again'."
Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted a map with detailed coordinates, which he said showed the drone was within the Islamic Republic's territorial waters.
It also revealed two yellow squares on the flight path of the drone which, according to the map, indicate Iranian radio warnings sent to the drone.
Dr Andrew Murrison, the UK's minister of state for the Middle East, will head to Iran on Sunday and demand a de-escalation of tension in the region.
He will also discuss worries over Iran's threat to stop complying with its nuclear deal.

British minister to visit Iran on Sunday for talks on tensions
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Middle East minister Andrew Murrison will visit Iran on Sunday for "frank and constructive" talks, the Foreign Office said, amid escalating tension between Tehran and Washington after the downing of an unmanned U.S. drone.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he aborted a military strike to retaliate for the drone incident because it could have killed 150 people, and signaled he was open to talks with Tehran.
Iran responded on Saturday by saying it would respond firmly to any threat against it, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.
"At this time of increased regional tensions and at a crucial period for the future of the nuclear deal, this visit is an opportunity for further open, frank and constructive engagement with the government of Iran," the Foreign Office said in a statement.
Murrison, a junior minister in the Foreign Office, will call for urgent de-escalation in the region and raise concerns about "Iran's regional conduct and its threat to cease complying with the nuclear deal to which the UK remains fully committed," the statement said.
