Jockey Dean Holland dies after horse racing fall in Australia
Apr 24 2023
MELBOURNE, Australia – Australian jockey Dean Holland died as a result of injuries suffered in a fall during a race in regional Victoria state Monday, Racing Victoria said. Holland was 34.
The state's horse racing authority said Holland was one of two jockeys thrown from their horses in the opening race of a meeting at Donald Racecourse. He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.
"It was a tragic accident at Donald today and we are all deeply shocked and saddened that Dean has passed away," Racing Victoria CEO Andrew Jones said in a statement. "Dean was a gifted lightweight rider who … was highly respected by his peers.
"Dean's passing is heartbreaking for all within Victorian racing and the sport nationally."
The Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported that Holland was nearing the finish when his horse, Headingley, veered into the inside rail.
The other rider, Alana Kelly, was cleared of serious injury. Both horses were uninjured as well.
Holland won a Group 1 race last month on a horse called In Secret in the Newmarket Handicap over 1,200 meters at Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse. Racing.com listed Holland as having 1,080 career wins.
He started racing in 2005 and had his first winner in January 2006 at Ceduna in regional South Australia state.
Victoria state police were preparing a report for the coroner.

China moon rover to investigate cube-shaped 'mystery house' object
There's something interesting on the far side of the moon.
Amanda Kooser
Dec. 3, 2021 10:08 a.m. PT
The Yutu-2 rover is on a roll. It's been exploring the far side of the moon since early 2019, as part of China's Chang'e-4 lunar lander mission. It now has its eyes set on a strange-looking cube-shaped object it spotted in the distance.
Andrew Jones, a journalist who covers the Chinese space program for SpaceNews and Space.com, highlighted a new rover update in a series of tweets Friday. The nickname for the cube-shaped object translates to "mystery house."
Ah. We have an update from Yutu-2 on the lunar far side, including an image of a cubic shape on the northern horizon ~80m away from the rover in Von K?rm?n crater. Referred to as "????" ("mystery house"), the next 2-3 lunar days will be spent getting closer to check it out. pic.twitter.com/LWPZoWN05I
- Andrew Jones (@AJ_FI) December 3, 2021
The rover team is planning to drive over and get a closer look at the object.
As with Yutu-2's intriguing discovery of a "gel-like" substance inside a crater in 2019, don't get too excited for aliens. That substance turned out to be glassy-looking rock. And as far as I know, Stanley Kubrick never planted a monolith on the moon, and those metal sculptures that were once all the rage on Earth haven't made the trek across space.
Yutu-2's view of the cube is fuzzy and far-off, so the object's true nature should become clearer as the rover gets closer. The most likely explanation is a boulder. This part of the moon is pockmarked with impact craters, which can feature quite a bit of chunky debris.
The Chang'e-4 mission represents the first surface exploration of the far side of the moon. The rover's work has helped scientists learn about what's happening with the geology under the lunar surface.
Don't look to Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon for scientific information about the lunar far side. China's rover is solar-powered, so it periodically goes into hibernation when it's dark and then gets back to work when the sun is out in the Von Karman crater.
According China Daily, Yutu-2 has already traveled 2,756 feet (840 meters) across the moon. Its next jaunt should shed some light on the "mystery house."

Any thoughts on two very recent space launches?
China launches yet another high-resolution Earth observation satellite, drops rocket debris
By Andrew Jones 2 days ago
While apparently routine, the mission had some new aspects to it. The Long March 3B rocket usually sends satellites towards geostationary orbits, which have an altitude of 22,236 miles (35,786 kilometers).
Sunday's launch, however, saw the Long March 3B send a satellite into a much lower orbit - sun-synchronous orbit (SSO), around 310 miles (500 km) up, for the first time.

Delta IV Heavy Launches Long-Delayed NROL-44 Mission
By Ben Evans, on December 10th, 2020
It was the 12th launch of a Heavy since December 2004, marking the beginning of the end for an impressive rocket which has now lifted eight classified NRO payloads, NASA's Parker Solar Probe, the final Defense Support Program (DSP) early-warning satellite and the inaugural voyage of the Orion deep-space exploration vehicle. But tonight's mission with NROL-44, despite all the media attention it has received for the wrong reasons since August, is completely shrouded in mystery.
Judging from the Heavy's lifting credentials-about 63,470 pounds (28,790 kg) to low-Earth orbit and up to 31,350 pounds (14,220 kg) to geostationary altitude-it would appear that NROL-44 is a heavyweight payload with a particularly high-energy-orbit requirement. It has been suggested that it may be an Advanced Orion/Mentor signals-intelligence satellite, perhaps weighing as much as 11,500 pounds (5,200 kg) and bound for a geostationary "slot" some 22,600 miles (35,900 km) above the Home Planet.

Researchers Say 3D Scans Will Reveal Noah's Ark Is Buried In Turkish Mountains
The search for one of the most legendary boats of human history has made a potential breakthrough as multiple teams of scientists have zeroed in on a curious ship-shaped rise on Mt. Ararat in Turkey. The story of Noah's Ark and the great flood that covered the earth, echoed in the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh, has long fascinated archaeologists who have wondered if remnants of the boat are still to be found.
Satellite images, radiocarbon dating, and most recently, 3D scans of the site known as Durup?nar have all given hope to researchers that solid evidence of the Ark may soon be found. "It's a man-made object and it's a ship form," computer engineer and biblical researcher Andrew Jones told WZTV,
As per the description of Genesis 8:4, "And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat," researchers have investigated the site, which lies around 2,000 meters (6,560 feet) above sea level and was first identified by a Turkish cartographer in 1959.
The location of the real Noah's Ark may have been confirmed by relic-hunters in a remote mountain range in eastern Turkey, with experts claiming images "show the entire ship buried underground."
Posted by Fox News on Thursday, November 21, 2019
The Durup?nar formation is about 18 miles (29 kilometers) south of the summit of Mt. Ararat, which reaches up to 16,854 feet. After its discovery was announced in 1959, it generated enthusiasm among ark seekers around the world, including Tennessee biblical researcher Ron Wyatt. Today, the site is labeled Nuhun Gemisi (Noah's Ship) by mapmakers and continues to generate interest.
"We're not going to find a sign that says, 'made by Noah and sons,' but what other ship would it be on the side of a hill at 6,500-foot elevation in the mountains of Ararat?" Andrew Jones told WZTV. In the Bible, God tells Noah very specifically how to build the Ark and these details have aided researchers in their quest.
This could be huge!
Posted by Daily Mail on Tuesday, December 26, 2017
Genesis 6:15 states, "This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high." These dimensions, as per the best guesses archaeologists have made about the length of a "cubit," would yield a ship that was 540 feet long, 37.5 feet high, and 75 feet wide.
This size corresponds to the strange, seemingly buried object found in the rise at Durup?nar, according to ark hunters. While in previous attempts to find evidence they produced wooden samples from the site that were dated to 4,800 years old with radiocarbon dating, they are now trying to produce an image of what's buried inside the mound.

China is ready to go where no one has gone before. It's launching the Chang'e-4 lunar lander Friday on a mission to explore the side of the moon that never shows itself to us here on Earth.
The Chinese government at a press conference in August gave the public a look at the rover Chang'e-4 will be carrying to the moon's surface.
There's been little news out of China on the mission since then and it's not clear whether the launch will be televised anywhere. Chinese state media outlet Xinhua said in August that the public would be able to choose the name for the rover, but the moniker hasn't been revealed yet.
Sources including journalist Andrew Jones, who covers China's space program, report that the launch is currently set for around 1:20 p.m. ET Friday from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China using a Long March 3B rocket.
5 years ago China launched the Chang'e-3 lander & rover to make the 1st lunar soft-landing since 1976. On Friday (~18:30 UTC/14:30 ET/02:30 local Saturday) Chang'e-4 will be launched to make the 1st attempt at a landing on the far side of the Moon. Former Charity CEO Pleads Guilty To Multi-Million-Dollar Political Corruption Scheme
The former CEO of a charity headquartered in Springfield, Missouri has pleaded guilty to her role in a multi-million-dollar political corruption scheme that involved bribes and campaign contributions for elected public officials in Missouri and Arkansas, announced Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department's Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney Tim Garrison of the Western District of Missouri.
Marilyn Luann Nolan, 68, of Springfield, pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge David P. Rush on Friday, Nov. 9, to one count of conspiracy to embezzle and misapply the funds of a charitable organization that received federal funds.
By pleading guilty, Nolan admitted that she conspired with others from 2008 to June 30, 2017, to misapply millions of dollars of the charity's funds for substantial, undisclosed payments to lobbying firms and political advocates, monetary and in-kind contributions to the campaigns of candidates for public office, and to bribe public officials. Nolan also admitted that she knew her co-conspirators defrauded the charity in order to enrich themselves, and her.
Nolan began working at Alternative Opportunities Inc., in 1992. In 2015, that company merged with Preferred Family Healthcare Inc., after which it continued to be known as Preferred Family Healthcare. Nolan was the chief executive officer and oversaw the charity's lobbying and governmental affairs activities.
Preferred Family Healthcare and its subsidiaries provided a variety of services to individuals in Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Illinois, including mental and behavioral health treatment and counseling, substance abuse treatment and counseling, employment assistance, aid to individuals with developmental disabilities and medical services.
Political Advocacy, Campaign Contributions, Fund-Raising Events
According to the plea agreement, Nolan and her conspirators caused the charity to misapply its funds to pay for political advocacy, including lobbying, that violated both IRS rules governing tax-exempt organizations, and federal laws and regulations governing recipients of federal grants and contracts. Nolan admitted that she directed and assisted her co-conspirators to direct millions of dollars to lobbyists, including Donald Andrew Jones and Milton Russell Cranford, who previously entered pleas of guilty to federal crimes in related cases. Nolan also directly lobbied legislators.
Under her plea agreement, Nolan also admitted that she and her conspirators:
Caused the charity to contribute financially to the campaigns of candidates for public office through "straw donors," including the charity's lobbyists, who were also reimbursed by way of invoices that were falsely described as "training" and "consulting" expenses;
Encouraged charity employees to contribute to candidates for public office and caused the charity to reimburse them for those contributions by providing funds falsely described as reimbursement for travel or other expenses the employees had not actually incurred; ………..

Part 2
Former Charity CEO Pleads Guilty To Multi-Million-Dollar Political Corruption Scheme
Caused the charity to contribute financially to the campaigns of candidates for public office through "straw donors," including the charity's lobbyists, who were also reimbursed by way of invoices that were falsely described as "training" and "consulting" expenses;
Encouraged charity employees to contribute to candidates for public office and caused the charity to reimburse them for those contributions by providing funds falsely described as reimbursement for travel or other expenses the employees had not actually incurred; and
Caused the charity to provide in-kind contributions to the campaigns of candidates for public office, including in Missouri where they organized fundraisers for several candidates running for seats in the Missouri State Senate, Missouri House of Representatives, and the Greene County Commission and in Arkansas, where Nolan and her conspirators organized fundraisers (often at hotels or restaurants) for many candidates running for seats in the Arkansas State Senate and Arkansas House of Representatives.
Nolan also admitted as part of her plea to directing an employee to use the charity's resources to arrange for catering, liquor, decorations, and other food connected to political fundraisers. This employee used a charity-issued corporate credit card for the purchases, with Nolan's knowledge.
At all times relevant to Nolan's plea, the charity was absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of, or in opposition to, any candidate for elective public office. Contributions to political campaign funds violated this prohibition, and could have resulted in denial or revocation of tax-exempt status and the imposition of certain excise taxes.
Bribery of Elected Public Officials
According to the plea agreement, Nolan and her conspirators misapplied some of the charity's funds to bribe elected public officials in the following manners:
They gave things of value to numerous public officials, in exchange for their official actions benefitting the charity and themselves personally, including cash, travel and entertainment, premium tickets to sporting events, hotel accommodations, and use of the charity's luxury/recreational real estate;
They hired public officials and the family members of public officials as charity employees; and
Nolan and the conspirators disguised bribes as contract payments for things such as consulting, training, and legal services.
The government believes the schemes Nolan pleaded guilty to totaled approximately $6 million. The parties reserved the right in the plea agreement to litigate the exact amount of that loss, for the purpose of computing the federal sentencing guidelines.

Report finds decades of violence and sexual abuse allowed to go unchecked in Victoria's racing industries
AAP / ABC - 13 Sep 2023
1/2
Harassment and abuse have gone unchecked in Victoria's racing industry, with victims subjected to ritualised violence and physical and sexual assaults, the racing watchdog has found.
The Racing Integrity Commissioner, Sean Carroll, has issued a long-awaited report into victim support and complaint processes in the industry, saying it has fostered a community filled with people who have lived and breathed racing for generations.
However, the sense of community has led to an "environment where harassment, abuse and assault have taken place unchecked", the report said.
"The dark flip side of loyalty has been a culture of silence across the industry that is underpinned by an historical and widespread, tacit discouragement of reporting," the commissioner's report said.
"At times, those who have raised complaints have been the subject of overt retaliation.
"A number hold the perception that perpetrators of abuse have been protected."
'Their voices have been heard'
Integrity commissioner Sean Carroll, in his review of the industry, heard devastating accounts of physical and sexual abuse including rape, sexual and physical assault, humiliating initiation practices, ritualised violence, grooming and harassment.
Children as young as 12 and young recruits were among the victims, and some of the abuse took place in recent years, the review found.
Racing Minister Anthony Carbines said the allegations from victims were unacceptable and deeply distressing.
"Their voices have been heard and will drive meaningful and enduring change," he said in a statement.
Greyhound Racing Victoria chief executive Stuart Laing apologised to survivors for the harm caused by past failures.
"GRV commits to learning from the report, so we can play our part in driving a better future for the Victorian racing industry," he said.
Harness Racing Victoria also offered an apology on behalf of the industry while vowing change.
"We are committed to setting higher standards to promote a safer and more inclusive industry," chief executive Matt Isaacs said.
Racing Victoria chief executive Andrew Jones said the final report was confronting, featuring accounts of experiences over the past 50 years that no one should be subjected to.
He praised the courage of those who spoke to the review panel and also apologised.
"One victim is one victim too many and it's clear from the report that we still have more work to do," he said.
"Child abuse in any form, in any workplace, in any situation is unacceptable and nobody in Victorian racing obviously is anything other than appalled by it."
Matt Hyland from the Victorian Jockeys Association urged anyone who had been abused or was struggling to reach out for support.
"We just have to say to those people we are listening and we hear you," he said.
