21st Security Forces Squadron improves military excellence, readiness with field training exercise

The 21st Security Forces Squadron sharpened its Air Base Ground Defense skills during a recent field training exercise at Peterson Space Force Base.
This exercise was designed to evaluate and refine tactical movements that have been instilled over the past several months, ensuring security forces Airmen are prepared for a deployed environment.
"The 21st Security Forces Squadron is honing foundational warfighting skills," said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Andrew Hill, 21st SFS noncommissioned officer in charge of training.
"These tactics are critical to SBD 1's support during possible real-world operations across the world."

Hill collaborated with his fellow trainers in the 21st SFS, including Tech. Sgt. Esteban Goniwicha, 21st SFS unit trainer, to plan the exercise.
Hill and Goniwicha both have prior experience as pre-deployment instructors. Their valuable expertise ensures the Defenders of the 21st SFS are a lethal fighting force.
"Airmen need to stay ready," Goniwicha said. "We need to stay lethal and able to combat any threat we come across."

That's exactly what the unit trainers from the 21st SFS reinforced throughout this exercise.
Master Sgt. Peter Patera, 21st SFS NCOIC of weapons and tactics, was also critical to planning this exercise. Both Patera and Hill have gone through the Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course.
"Master Sgt. Patera and I are part of a very limited number in our career field, less than 1%." Hill said about graduating from the Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course.

For this exercise, the security forces Airmen were given multiple locations to visit, acting upon intelligence that needed investigating.
The end goal was to set up a Forward Arming and Refueling Point. This is a scenario they could encounter during Agile Combat Employment operations.

En route to the FARP, the Airmen received intelligence from a "local farmer" - someone acting as a local in a deployed environment - of militia presence.
The militia was reported to have planted bombs in the area. The Airmen were tasked with investigating the intelligence en route to the FARP.

During this part of the training, the Airmen experienced what it was like to work in a joint environment with the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal Flight.
After simulating the explosion of an improvised explosive device, the Airmen had to provide Tactical Combat Casualty Care to a wounded member of the EOD flight.
After doing this, they called in a nine-line casualty medical evacuation and transported the wounded individual on a collapsible litter.

"Tactical Combat Casualty Case is a major benefit for anyone who holds that knowledge, as they can provide life-saving care to anyone around them." said Tech. Sgt. Tyler Bacon, 21st SFS NCOIC of investigation.
Bacon is one of the TCCC instructors for Space Base Delta 1. "This exercise gave our Defenders hands-on experience to further build on their TCCC skillset."

After this, the team pushed on and successfully established the FARP.
"We're having to adapt and learn different ways to deal with the strategies that our enemies are employing," said Master Sgt. Joshua Aleprete, 21st SFS individual mobilization augmentee superintendent.
"This exercise is about not only learning but also putting it to the test."

Beyond bolstering base security, the skills that the Airmen demonstrated during this exercise are transferable to both defensive and offensive operations.
By incorporating lessons learned from prior Explosive Ordnance Disposal training events, the Defenders of the 21st SFS enhanced their ability to operate effectively in changing environments and demonstrated consistent military excellence and readiness.

British broadcaster Sky News described Hill as a "military volunteer". Hill was charged today by DPR forces alongside Healy for acting as mercenaries for Ukraine's armed forces.

Russia's TASS news agency reported that both men have refused to cooperate and are currently imprisoned in the DPR.

"Criminal cases have been initiated and charges were presented for (mercenarism) against British citizens Dylan Healy and Andrew Hill, currently in detention in DPR. Investigation operations are under way as the investigators look for evidence of the crimes, committed by the British, because they do not want to testify and refuse to cooperate on their criminal cases," a DPR source informed TASS.

Britain's Foreign Office released a statement on Saturday condemning "the exploitation of prisoners of war and civilians for political purposes."

"We are in constant contact with the government of Ukraine on their cases and are fully supportive of Ukraine in its efforts to get them released," the statement added.

Earlier in June, the DPR sentenced to death three mercenaries (two British and one Moroccan) after they were caught fighting alongside Ukrainian militias.

British mercenaries Aiden Aslin, 28, and Shaun Pinner, 48, in addition to Moroccan Saadun Brahim, were convicted by a Donetsk court on charges of terrorism.

According to The Guardian, an official said that the men would have one month to appeal their sentence, and if the appeal is accepted, the defendants would receive a 25-year or life sentence instead of the death penalty.

Ukraine: Scores of foreign mercenaries killed over past 10 days

Tens of foreign mercenaries have been killed in Ukraine over the past 10 days, according to Russian Defense Minister, Sergey Shoigu.

Shoigu spoke at a ministry meeting, saying that as a "result of the successful offensive" by both the Russian and Donbass republics' forces, "the number of foreign mercenaries and employees of private military companies operating in the country has decreased."

"Over the past 10 days, 170 foreign mercenaries have been killed, 99 have refused to participate in combat and left the territory of Ukraine," he said.

On Tuesday, Damien Magrou, a spokesperson for the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine, confirmed that a French fighter that goes by the name Adrien D was killed in Kharkov. The legion is a foreign military unit created at the start of the war at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The fighter died of injuries on June 25 after spending some time in a coma at a hospital, and he was one of the first foreign fighters to join the Ukrainian ranks - and, the second French national to die.

On June 1, Wilfried Bleriot, his colleague, was also killed in the same region.

According to RTL, there are reports that around 50 French nationals fighting for Ukraine, and Magrou revealed that foreigners from 55 countries serve in the region, with most coming from Poland, the US, UK, and Canada.

Magrou added that the foreigners "are servicemen in the Ukrainian Armed Forces," and that they should be considered prisoners of war protected by the Geneva Conventions.

"We hereby call on Russian authorities and Russian proxies to respect international humanitarian law and refrain from politically motivated criminal proceedings against lawful members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces," Magrou said in a statement.

In response, Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, "They are not (in the) Ukrainian army, so they are not subject to the Geneva Conventions."

"They're soldiers of fortune and they were involved in illegal activities on the territory of Ukraine. They were involved in firing and shelling our military personnel. They were endangering their lives," Peskov said.

"They should be held responsible for those crimes that they have committed," he added. "Those crimes have to be investigated."

Russian Military Spokesperon Major General Igor Konashenkov last month said that hundreds of foreign mercenaries in Ukraine have been killed by Russian long-range precision weapons "shortly after their arrival at the places where they were undergoing additional training and where the tactical units were coordinated." However, most of them, according to the Spokesperson, were killed "due to a low level of training and a lack of real combat experience."

British mercenaries in Ukraine face death penalty

A criminal case against the foreign fighters has been sent to court
Three suspected mercenaries from Britain and Morocco, who joined the Ukrainian military and were later captured by the forces of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), could be facing the death penalty there, the republic's General Prosecutor's Office said on Friday.

Viktor Gavrilov, the judiciary spokesman, revealed that an investigation into the activities of "a group of foreign mercenaries" who allegedly "took part in the preparation and implementation of hostilities against the DPR," had been completed and a criminal case had been "fully formed."

"The materials of the case have been transferred to one of the republic's courts for consideration which could result, taking wartime into account, in the application of capital punishment - the death penalty - to the accused," Gavrilov told journalists.

The Prosecutor General's Office specified that the investigation had confirmed that Brits Shaun Pinner and Andrew Hill, along with Moroccan Ibrahim Saadoun, were involved in crimes under three articles of the DPR Criminal Code: the "commission of crimes by a group of persons," the "forcible seizure of power or forcible retention of power," and "mercenarism."

According to the DPR Criminal Code, mercenarism, which is internationally considered a crime, can be punished by imprisonment for three to seven years, and the forcible seizure of power - from 12 to 20 years. Aggravating circumstances or wartime could lead to the death penalty.

Russian military spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said earlier that the best thing the foreign mercenaries could expect was a "long term in prison."

Pinner and another alleged British mercenary, Aiden Aslin, have called on UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to facilitate their exchange for one of the Ukrainian opposition leaders, Victor Medvedchuk, who had been detained by Ukrainian forces. London, however, has apparently limited itself to calling Pinner and Aslin "prisoners of war," rather than "mercenaries," and said they should be treated accordingly.

In early May, Andrew Hill published a video in which he said that after coming to Ukraine he realized "it was hell" there. He also claimed that the foreign mercenaries he was fighting with were "really bad people and sadists."

"I understand everything has been done wrong and I hope for leniency from the Donetsk People's Republic," he said.

Hill himself came to Ukraine from the Polish city of Rzeszow. There were seven people in the group with Hill, he did not get to know them and had a minimum of information, he could not even name the commander.

Andrew Hill, PhD, is a senior visiting Research Fellow in Pharmacology at Liverpool University. He is also an advisor for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Clinton Foundation. As a researcher for the WHO evaluating ivermectin, Hill wielded enormous influence over international guidance for the drug's use.
Hill had previously authored a analysis of ivermectin as a treatment for COVID-19 that found the drug overwhelmingly effective.
On Jan. 6 of 2021, Hill testified enthusiastically before the NIH COVID-19 Treatment Guidlelines Panel in support of ivermectin's use. Within a month, however, Hill found himself in what he describes as a "tricky situation." Under pressure from his funding sponsors, Hill then published an unfavorable study. Ironically, he used the same sources as in the original study. Only the conclusions had changed.
Shortly before he published, Dr. Tess Lawrie, Director of the Evidence-based Medicine Consultancy in Bath, England, and one of the world's leading medical research analysts, contacted Hill via Zoom and recorded the call (transcript below). Lawrie had learned of his new position and reached out to try to rectify the situation.
In a remarkable exchange, a transcript of which appears on pages 137 - 143 in Kennedy's book, Hill admitted his manipulated study would likely delay the uptake of ivermectin in the UK and United States, but said he hoped his doing so would only set the lifesaving drug's acceptance back by about "six weeks," after which he was willing to give his support for its use.
Hill affirmed that the rate of death at that time was 15,000 people per day. At the 80 percent recovery rate using the drug, which Hill and Lawrie discussed earlier in the call, the number of preventable deaths incurred by such a delay would be staggering - as many as 504,000.
Lawrie was unable to persuade Hill, who instead of joining her team as lead author, went ahead and published his manipulated findings.
Four days before publication, Hill's sponsor Unitaid gave the University of Liverpool, Hill's employer $40 million.

"It was an exciting opportunity," Kennedy writes. "Under normal circumstances, Hill should have pounced on this chance to serve as lead author with some of the world's most prestigious researchers. He was nevertheless noncommittal.

The article states that Lawrie spoke to Hill by Zoom and the call was recorded.
"Dr Lawrie asked Hill to explain his U-turn on ivermectin, which his own analysis found overwhelmingly effective. 'How can you do this?' she inquired politely. 'You are causing irreparable harm.'Hill explained that he was in a 'tricky situation' because his sponsors had put pressure on him. Hill is a University of Liverpool virologist who serves as an adviser to Bill Gates and the Clinton Foundation. He told me his sponsor was Unitaid.

"Unitaid is a quasi-governmental advocacy organization funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and several countries - France, the United Kingdom, Norway, Brazil, Spain, the Republic of Korea and Chile - to lobby governments to finance the purchase of medicines from pharmaceutical multinationals for distribution to the African poor.

"Its primary purpose seems to be protecting the patent and intellectual property rights of pharmaceutical companies - which, as we shall see, is the priority passion for Bill Gates - and to ensure their prompt and full payment.About 63 percent of its funding comes from a surtax on airline tickets.

"The BMGF holds a board seat and chairs Unitaid's Executive Committee, and the BMGF has given Unitaid $150 million since 2005. Various Gates-funded surrogate and front organizations also contribute, as does the pharmaceutical industry.

"The BMGF and Gates personally own large stakes in many of the pharmaceutical companies that profit from this boondoggle. Gates also uses Unitaid to fund corrupt science by tame and compromised researchers like Hill that legitimizes his policy directives to the WHO.

"Unitaid gave $40 million to Andrew Hill's employer, the University of Liverpool, four days before the publication of Hill's study. Hill, a Ph.D., confessed that the sponsors were pressuring him to influence his conclusion. When Dr. Lawrie asked who was trying to influence him, Hill said, 'I mean, I, I think I'm in a very sensitive position here ...'"

Remdesivir Doesn't work on COVID-19

The antiviral medicine remdesivir from Gilead Sciences failed to speed the improvement of patients with Covid-19 or prevent them from dying, according to results from a long-awaited clinical trial conducted in China. Gilead, however, said the data suggest a "potential benefit."

A summary of the study results was inadvertently posted to the website of the World Health Organization and seen by STAT on Thursday, but then removed.

A draft manuscript was provided by the authors to WHO and inadvertently posted on the website and taken down as soon as the mistake was noticed. The manuscript is now undergoing peer review and we are waiting for a final version before WHO comments on it," said WHO spokesperson Daniela Bagozzi

Gilead spokesperson Amy Flood said the company believes "the post included inappropriate characterization of the study." Because the study was stopped early because it had too few patients, she said, it cannot "enable statistically meaningful conclusions." However, she said, "trends in the data suggest a potential benefit for remdesivir, particularly among patients treated early in disease."

The data (for details, see screenshot below) will be closely scrutinized but are also likely imperfect. The study was terminated prematurely, which could have affected the results. The context that would be provided by a full manuscript is missing, and the data have not been reviewed as normally occurs before publication.

Many studies are being run to test remdesivir, and this one will not be the final word. Results are expected soon from a Gilead-run study in severe Covid-19 patients, although that study may be difficult to interpret because the drug is not compared to patients receiving only standard treatment. Encouraging data from patients in that study at the University of Chicago were described by researchers at a virtual town hall and obtained by STAT last week. However, unlike those data, these new results are from a randomized controlled trial, the medical gold standard.

Gilead is also running a study with a control group in more moderate Covid-19 patients, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is running a study that compares remdesivir to placebo. There are even more studies of the drug ongoing.

According to the summary of the China study, remdesivir was "not associated with a difference in time to clinical improvement" compared to a standard of care control. After one month, it appeared 13.9% of the remdesivir patients had died compared to 12.8% of patients in the control arm. The difference was not statistically significant.

"In this study of hospitalized adult patients with severe COVID-19 that was terminated prematurely, remdesivir was not associated with clinical or virological benefits," the summary states. The study was terminated prematurely because it was difficult to enroll patients in China, where the number of Covid-19 cases was decreasing.

An outside researcher said that the results mean that any benefit from remdesivir is likely to be small.

"If there is no benefit to remdesivir in a study this size, this suggests that the overall benefit of remdesivir in this population with advanced infection is likely to be small in the larger Gilead trial," said Andrew Hill, senior visiting research fellow at Liverpool University.

He added that the results of the study should be pooled with larger studies being conducted by Gilead using a technique called meta-analysis to allow for "a balanced view of the efficacy of remdesivir from all randomized trials."
