Ex-Tory MP found guilty of raping sleeping wife
Former Conservative minister Andrew Griffiths has been found guilty of raping his sleeping wife and subjecting her to coercive control, a UK judge ruled on Friday.
The ruling, released on Friday, outlined the allegations made by his then-wife Kate Griffiths during their five-year marriage. At the conclusion of the case, the judge accepted the claims that he had pressured her into sex, as well as physically and verbally abusing her.
Among the charges, Kate, who replaced her ex-husband as Conservative MP for Burton, claimed he raped her when she was asleep and exerted coercive control over her. Andrew "adamantly denied" the charge of rape, as well as rejecting the other allegations made.
Andrew was forced to resign from his position as a government minister in 2018 when it was reported that he sent around 2,000 sexually explicit messages to female constituents. He stood down as MP at the next election in 2019.
The allegations of abuse were made during a hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, where Andrew was seeking to get more time to spend with a child at the center of the case. Media outlets had initially been prohibited from naming either Andrew or Kate Griffiths but, following an application by two journalists, Kate backed removing their anonymity.
Since the case was heard in a civil court, Judge Elizabeth Williscroft's ruling was made based on a lower standard of proof than would be required for criminal prosecution.

Sex text MP has whip restored for crucial vote as May seeks 'power over principle'
Theresa May has been widely attacked after the whip was restored to a disgraced sex text Tory MP, following which he voted for the embattled Prime Minister in Wednesday's no-confidence vote.
MP Andrew Griffiths had been suspended since mid-July after a series of explicit and violent texts he sent to two Burton women, were exposed.
Despite this, the Chief Whip, Julian Smith, restored his place in the party. Griffiths had told Burton Live of his support for Theresa May, stating on Wednesday: "Theresa May has shown huge determination and bravery in negotiating and arguing for her deal.
"I believe she remains the best person to deliver the Brexit people in Burton and Uttoxeter voted for, and I will be supporting her in tonight's ballot."
The news drew widespread condemnation of the prime minister. Labour MPs Dawn Butler and Jess Phillips took to Twitter to attack May, while commentators accused her of 'panic' and seeking 'power over principle.'
As well as Griffiths, the whip was also restored to MP Chris Elphicke; another Tory MP facing allegations of sexual offenses. Elphicke denies wrongdoing over accusations of sex offenses against two members of his staff.
Elphicke tweeted his pleasure at having the whip restored, although he didn't divulge which way he voted.
Regardless, May didn't need the two votes winning by a 200-117 margin, a significant rebellion but well below the 158 turncoats needed to trigger a Tory leadership election.

'Can she take a beating?' Tory minister resigns after bizarre, perverted sexting exposé
Married Tory minister, Andrew Griffiths has resigned after it was revealed he sent more than 2000 explicit messages to a barmaid in his constituency, hounding her and a female friend for sex and insisting they call him "Daddy."
MP for Burton Griffiths, who was minister for small business, quit his cabinet position on Sunday after barmaid Imogen Treharne, 28 and also from Burton, told the Sunday Mirror that he had demanded explicit photos and videos from her and a friend over a three-week period.
's alleged the 47-year-old man, who became a new dad in April, described degrading sex acts using crude detail in Whatsapp messages. The paper reports Griffiths gave Treharne and her pal £700 and offered to pay for the rent of a flat in which to have sex.
Griffiths, who insisted on being called "Daddy," promised money if he received naughty pictures from the female pair, and described perverted and rough sex he claimed to have had with other women.
A selection of Whatsapp messages include:
"I'm thinking maybe we need a flat for Daddy's girls. I'm taken by you both. You girls are spectacular."
"I'm going to bring you to London and do whatever I want to you."
"Take off the bra and panties... you've got Daddy in such a frenzy."
"I'm going to need something filthy to put a smile on my face. I want to see you both naked."
The Sunday Mirror says there are other messages sent by the MP for Burton, too disgusting to print in full, that describe his penchant for certain sexual acts.
Messages like this one from Griffiths: "I want you to be really * rough with * [the girl]. The video of you spanking her was nowhere near hard enough. Can she take a beating? I have to be slightly careful in my job."
There have been calls for the now ex-minister to resign from his position as an MP. Labour Councillor Michael Fitzpatrick, who represents Stapenhill in East Staffordshire which covers Burton, told the Burton Mail: "He has crossed the line. A very sick line was crossed and it is unacceptable."
