Anti-zionism v antisemitism. Bondi Beach "F*** Israel" t-shirt man in court battle for freedom of speech

Police now want to drop charges against a man they arrested last year for wearing a F* Israel F* Zionism t-shirt. But the man, Andrew Brown, wants his day in court. Michael West reports on a big test for free speech.

Andrew Brown was sitting on a wall on Bondi Beach last November wearing a Fuck Israel Fuck Zionism t-shirt when two police officers approached. Although he made no effort to flee, he was arrested, handcuffed and led around Bondi before being plonked in a paddy wagon and taken to Waverley Police Station.

The station was just up the road near Bondi Junction but Brown said the trip took 40 minutes, whereupon he was then held in a cell for six hours, DNA tested despite refusing, fingerprinted, photographed, and his shirt was seized as DNA evidence.

A year later and costs hurtling towards $1m for the state and Brown, the former Mosman Deputy Mayor and businessman has refused approaches by the Police prosecutor to have offensive conduct charges dropped. He wants his day in court.

He wants to win

and have it written in NSW Case Law that his conduct was a political statement and does not constitute offensive conduct.

The Court has set aside four full days in March at the Downing Centre in Sydney for the hearing. It is likely to involve the Attorney-General with his constitutional experts and solicitors and barristers as Andrew Brown says the NSW Summary Offences charges are overridden by the Constitution and the right to political communication.

Media pile-on by usual suspects
The upshot of the arrest and charges was a pile-on by the Israel lobby and right-wing media - Murdoch's Daily Telegraph, the pro-Israel Daily Mail, 2GB shock jock Ray Hadley and Israel lobby groups on social media - who claimed, despite the clear political nature of Brown's t-shirt, that it was an act of antisemitism.

"I was sitting on the wall at Bondi, doing nothing more dramatic than wearing a shirt. A week earlier a group of AJA activists claimed I had intimidated them. They photographed me. They later said I was offending the public. Yet on both days I had dozens of ordinary people come up to me and thank me for wearing it.

"I wanted to give you a clear and honest picture of where things stand with my court matter over the protest shirt that said "Fuck Israel, Fuck Zionism" and why it has grown far beyond a simple offence charge. It has become a test of political speech, police overreach, and the quiet power of a state agency determined to make an example of someone in order to appease a powerful lobby."

NSW Police declined to respond to questions for this story. "As the matters remain before the Court - Downing Centre on 2 March 2026 - we won't be providing any comment," said a statement by Police Media.

NZDF Launches Complex Container Recovery at Site of Sunken HMNZS Manawanui

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) is working with local contractor ARK Marine to recover three shipping containers lost from the HMNZS Manawanui after the dive and hydrographic vessel struck a reef and sank near Upolu, Samoa, on October 5.

The operation, involving floating and towing the containers to shore, is expected to take at least three days, weather permitting.

The containers, measuring 10 feet each, are not watertight and have sustained structural damage. Two of them are empty, while the third holds 3,000 kilograms of food. The containers have been shifting due to tides and swell, adding complexity to the recovery process.

"We have carefully considered a number of options for removing the containers. Especially, we are working hard to minimize the impact on the marine environment," said Commodore Andrew Brown, NZDF Senior National Representative. "Other considerations include the prevailing weather, weight of the containers, and potential biosecurity risks."

The Samoan Government has been involved throughout, approving the removal plan. As of now, the NZDF expects the operation to continue smoothly, though Commodore Brown cautioned that weather and sea conditions could affect the timetable. "We are hopeful that the conditions will be such that all containers will be removed from the reef over the coming days," he added.

The NZDF last week launched a Court of Inquiry (COI) to investigate the incident, which saw the successful rescue of all 75 crew members. The ship's Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) has been recovered and sent for analysis, providing critical information for the ongoing investigation.

Further support for the recovery operation has arrived in the form of the HMNZS Canterbury, which docked in Apia to assist the Samoan Government in hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. The vessel is also transporting additional equipment to aid the NZDF's ongoing response.

So far, no pollution or deceased wildlife have been reported along Samoa's shorelines, as confirmed by Maritime New Zealand and NZDF task groups. Daily beach surveys continue in cooperation with local authorities. The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) has also deployed uncrewed aerial vehicles to assist with shoreline assessments, while an RNZAF P-8A Poseidon has conducted multiple surveillance flights over the site to assess damage and aid the investigation.

Judge Won't Release Bodycam Footage Showing Andrew Brown Trying to Hit Deputies with His Car Before They Fired Shots

Last week a 40-year-old black man was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

According to reports, deputies were serving a search warrant last Wednesday morning in the 400 block of Perry Street, off Roanoke Avenue.

The man, 40-year-old Andrew Brown, got into his car and began to drive away when deputies opened fire.

The family and the family's lawyer insisted Brown, who was a father to 10 children, was unarmed and was executed by deputies.

Earlier this week the Brown family reviewed 20 seconds of the bodycam footage and publicly accused the deputies of executing Andrew Brown.

On Wednesday, a North Carolina judge decided not to publicly release the bodycam footage after prosecutors argued Andrew Brown tried to hit deputies with his car before they fired shots.

Judge Jeffrey Foster said the video represents material "of a highly sensitive nature" and decided not to release the bodycam footage while the case is under investigation.

Twenty media organizations, including the parent company of The Daily Advance, are headed to court this morning to ask a judge to release body camera footage of Pasquotank County deputies' fatal shooting of Andrew Brown Jr. last week.

Superior Court Judge Jeff Foster will preside at the hearing which will be held in Courtroom A at the Pasquotank County Courthouse starting at 10 a.m.

In addition to media representatives, Brown's family members, their attorneys and law enforcement personnel are expected to attend.

Michael J. Tadych, an attorney with the Stevens Martin & Tadych law firm in Raleigh, will be representing the plaintiffs who petitioned for the body camera footage's release on Monday.

Tadych, who represents media clients, said Tuesday his clients will be seeking all body camera, dashboard camera, cell phone video, fixed camera recordings compiled by law enforcement from the time of deputies' arrival at Brown's residence on April 21 until later that day when spontaneous protests of Brown's death began outside City Hall and later in the parking lot of the Pasquotank County Public Safety Building.

On Tuesday, footage from one of Elizabeth City's static neighborhood cameras was released to several media organizations, including The Daily Advance. It shows what appears to be seven deputies arriving by pickup truck in front of Brown's residence on Perry Street. The deputies are seen jumping out of the truck but nothing else of what happened afterward can be observed clearly.



On Monday, Pasquotank County allowed Brown's family members and one of their attorneys to view a 20-second clip from one body camera of Brown's fatal shooting by deputies.

Tadych said his clients are seeking the full release of all video footage compiled by law enforcement during Brown's fatal shooting.

Tadych, who has argued in court for the public release of body camera footage approximately 33 times, didn't know how Foster would rule in today's case. But he said judges typically rule in favor of release.

In those 33 cases, only one time did a judge not grant his media clients' full request, he said. In the five cases that involved officer-involved shootings, the presiding judge granted the full request, he said.

Also taking place in Elizabeth City today will be a "Procession of Peace" march led by local clergy members.

The march, which is open to local clergy as well as citizens, will begin at Mount Lebanon AME Zion Church at 320 Culpepper Street at noon and proceed to the intersection of Roanoke and Brooks avenues, where Brown was shot and killed by deputies on April 21.

'We're Going To Destroy This System': City Where A Black Man Was Fatally Shot Put Under State Of Emergency

The North Carolina city where a black man was fatally shot by officers during the execution of a search warrant Wednesday is under a state of emergency ahead of the release of bodycam footage, authorities announced.

Elizabeth City was put into a state of emergency Monday as the Pasquotank County Sheriff's office is expected to release the bodycam footage showing the fatal police shooting of Andrew Brown Jr.

"It is also our understanding that numerous news media outlets have taken steps to secure a court order directing the Sheriff's office to release those tapes," the city said in a statement.

"City officials realize there may potentially be a period of civil unrest within the City following the public release of that footage."

The state of emergency went into effect at 8:00 a.m. and will remain in effect until the city deems it "no longer necessary to protect our citizens from any such threat to their safety."

The Elizabeth County Pasquotank Public Schools said the district will "operate on a full remote schedule for all students and staff through April 30, 2021."

Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten II said on Saturday he would file a motion in court as early as Monday to ask a local judge to release the video.

"Only a judge can release the video. That's why I've asked the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to confirm for me that the releasing of the video will not undermine their investigation," Wooten said. "Once I get that confirmation, our county will file a motion in court, hopefully, Monday, to have the footage released."

Brown's family will review the footage Monday before its public release, according to WAVY 10.

Elizabeth City, N.C., Declares Emergency Before Release Of Bodycam Video Of Shooting

A state of emergency is now in effect in Elizabeth City, N.C., where the local sheriff's office is expected to publicly release a deputy's body camera footage from the killing of Andrew Brown Jr. last Wednesday. The city has also closed all of its government offices for the day.

Pasquotank County, N.C., Sheriff Tommy Wooten II said over the weekend that his office will ask a court to approve the video's release on Monday. That step is required by North Carolina law, as agencies generally do not have the authority to make such recordings public.

The video and audio recordings will likely be released "in the very near future," Elizabeth City Mayor Bettie Parker said in an emergency declaration that was issued Monday morning.

"City officials realize there may potentially be a period of civil unrest within the City following the public release of that footage," she stated.

City police also announced downtown road closures around the county courthouse and sheriff's office on Monday, saying the streets "are closed for citizens exercising their constitutional right to a peaceful protest."

Brown's death immediately resulted in protests in Elizabeth City; police said over the weekend that the demonstrations had not resulted in property damage or arrests.

North Carolina police fatally shoot Andrew Brown during search

A North Carolina man was killed by police who had been called to search his property early Wednesday, police said.

The man, identified by relatives as Andrew Brown, 40, was driving away from officers in Elizabeth City when they shot him around 8:30 a.m., according to police and local TV station WAVY.

"During the execution of the search warrant, a citizen who was subject to the search warrant was shot and fatally wounded," the Pasquotank County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will take over the probe, according to the sheriff, and the city council has called an emergency meeting for Wednesday evening. The sheriff's department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

What If the Trump Prophecies Are True?

In a recent article, Christian journalist Stephen Strang cited prophecies delivered in 2007 by the late Kim Clement, which pointed to Donald Trump being a two-term president. Are these true prophecies? And if so, how should they influence our voting?

Some, of course, do not believe there is such a thing as a prophecy at all, especially in our day. Others will dispute the accuracy of Clement's prophecies, thereby discrediting their practical application. But there are others who do believe that prophetic words were given to Christian leaders and believers in recent years, pointing positively to the Trump presidency.

If so, what are we to make of this, especially those of us who identify as Christian? Does a prophetic word about the future dictate how we vote (or live) today?

There is, of course, a lively debate among Christians regarding support of President Trump. And this debate has nothing do with the question of alleged prophecies.

Some writers, like Strang, who is a colleague of mine and a respected journalist, believe that it is essential that Christians support Trump in 2020. The title of his forthcoming book says it all: God, Trump, and the 2020 Election: Why He Must Win and What's at Stake for Christians if He Loses.

Others, like evangelical Never Trumper Ben Howe, have argued that the same evangelicals who shouted "Character counts" during the Bill Clinton days have looked the other way during the Donald Trump days. (For my perspective, see here.)

These debates will surely intensify in the coming months as we work our way through the impeachment hearings into the 2020 elections. But these are debates we need to have as we prayerfully discuss what is best for our nation. The stakes are very high.

But what about the prophecies? How do they factor in?

For argument's sake, let's say that: 1) there is such a thing as prophecy; 2) God is giving His people prophecies to this day; and 3) there are prophecies indicating that Donald Trump will serve two terms.

Does this mean that true believers should vote for Trump to help fulfill prophecy? Does this mean that we should not analyze things pragmatically, weighing the pros and cons of a Trump second term, since the Lord has already spoken?

My answer to both questions is a clear and categorical "no."

But it's not because I have a problem with the idea of contemporary prophecy. To the contrary, I believe God is still speaking today - not adding to the Bible, God forbid, but rather giving specific information for specific situations. And I believe it's very possible that the Trump presidency was predicted. (See, for example, here and here.)

At the same time, I believe we can get into serious error when we make decisions today based on alleged prophecies about tomorrow.

President Bush was sometimes criticized for this (rightly or wrongly) when he allegedly made decisions about invading Iraq based on biblical prophecies. As Andrew Brown wrote in 2009, it is claimed that, "George W Bush attempted to sell the invasion of Iraq to Jacques Chirac using biblical prophecy."

This leads Brown to conclude, "Tricky stuff, the word of the lord" (his lack of capitalization).

In context, Brown was referring to using ancient prophecies, recorded in the Bible more than 2,500 years ago, to influence policy decisions today. In that case, it can indeed be tricky business. How much trickier can it be, then, to use contemporary prophecies, whose reliability must be scrutinized, to influence our personal decision making?

When it comes to biblical prophecies, I do believe that the modern State of Israel is a partial fulfillment of ancient promises given by God. And I absolutely stand with Israel today, for many different reasons.

At the same time, I believe that Israel must be held accountable for her actions like every other nation on the planet.

takes time to unfold. If we enter the state of Buddhahood and see through the eyes of the Buddha,
we can see our Karma in a certain way and see the steps needed to change it. We'll have the confidence of Big Papi in the bottom of the ninth inning, or Larry Bird taking a last-second shot, to make
changes to our lives to become what we dream of. There are nine other states of consciousness, called
worlds, through which we can perceive our Karma. Most people remain unaware of the Ten Worlds
and how they work.

Q: Mr. Brown, there have been, unfortunately, a number of conspiracy theories that have floated around about what really happened with the DNC hacks. And I just want to clarify, and hopefully dispel with one or two of those conspiracies.

In one case, there was a tragic murder of a former DNC staffer, and that murder -has been exploited to create a completely unsupported theory that that staffer was somehow the one who stole the DNC information. Have you heard of that theory?

A: I've heard of that theory.

Q: What do you make of that?

A: That theory is preposterous. So I knew Seth Rich very well. I worked closely with him in his capacity at the DNC. Seth's job at the DNC was to work on collecting information sets to provide to voters on where they could participate and vote.

Seth was not a hacker, so to speak. Like, he did not have the types of skills that would have been necessary to carry out these attacks. And Seth was a very patriotic person. Like, he would not have even thought about colluding with a foreign government to try and undermine the democratic process. So the idea that he was somehow involved in these attacks, to me, is a nonstarter. And then based on his personality. And then just knowing his skill set, it doesn't make any sense that he didn't have the skills to carry out these attacks.

And then beyond that, he would not have had access or privileges to be able to access the type of information that these conspiracy theories claim that he would have been leaking. So it was – on all levels, the conspiracy theory just makes no sense.

He talks about how all the data was stored and where the servers were. A lot of people apparently had access to their internal data.

NGP Van was their CRM third-party software provider (cloud data) and then they had an in-house data warehouse with restricted access. But that had "potentially 100 or 200 users" (page 12).

- Contractor - employed by Management lnformation Systems, lnc (the MIS Department).
- Sept 2015 - received initial call from FBI (p. 7)
- Agent asked if they corroborate specific activities from DNC network that could be nefarious. Specifically asked about web traffic hitting a website ending with redacted (p. 8)
- Spoke with supervisor Andrew Brown, checked network and found nothing. FBI info was rather vague.
- FBI agent mentioned that the adversaries were referred to as "Dukes". Agent asked them to be discreet in their searches and they were. Nothing was done on the DNC network.
- Did additional forensic work but found nothing unusual or alarming. (p.10)
- No call to his knowledge from FBI prior to Sept 2015.
- FBI agent called/texted him periodically from Sept-Dec saying they've seen similar activity. (p. 12)
- Agent divulged that he was speaking with other IC operatives and that they were getting info that was 3 weeks - 1 month old.
- DNC IT team still didn't find any evidence of suspicious activity but due to concern, they purchased a new firewall from Palo Alto Networks which arrived in Feb 2016 (p. 13)
- Firewall installed in March in transparency mode (i.e. listens to traffic in/out but does not apply policy).
- Mentions that nothing about the conversations with the FBI were placed on DNC server so as to not tip their hat. Shared everything with his supervisor. (p. 16)
- Yared finds out through personal investigation that Dukes aka APT-29 (advanced persistent threat) aka "Cozy Bear".
- FBI Agent first mentioned Russia in a Nov 2015 phone call. (p. 17)
- Finally met FBI Agent face-to-face in Feb 2016. Agent handed him 4-5 strips of paper with timestamps & redacted IPs .
- Timestamps were very helpful for them to go back through the logs. But they still couldn't find anything. They did find some phishing emails which never made it through the spam filter.
- In early 2016, FBI requested logs - metadata about emails from the DNC exchange servers - 15 gigs of data.
- At this point Yared went to the DNC COO Lindsey Reynolds and asked for help from DNC legal counsel, Perkins Coie.
- On Apr 29th, they delivered the logs to FBI and the agent confirmed receipt by text.
- Apr 28th was "coincidentally" the 1st time they detected unusual activity on the network - someone was trying to access passwords of users. (p.24)
- This turned out to be an attack from what he calls Fancy Bear or APT-28. Fancy Bear is known to be a separate Russian actor than Cozy Bear. (p. 26)
- Admits that it was CrowdStrike that identified the Cozy Bear (Dukes) attack, the DNC IT team never noticed any nefarious activity in the 7 months of directly engaging with the FBI until the incident on Apr 28th.

I'm finding the Andrew Brown testimony interesting.

I searched the files for Seth Rich since his death was a key event in trying to cover up the server breach. Andrew Brown dismissed the Seth Rich "hacking" as a conspiracy theory saying that Seth Rich wasn't a hacker.

The line of questions lays out the timeline of the FBI contacting the DNC beginning in September 2015 through May when the DNC officially said they were hacked. The DNC did not tell the DCCC who later reported being hacked in July.

During this process, the DNC was taking direction from CrowdStrike and assembled an advisory board consisting of:

Rand Beers, the former Acting Secretary of DHS, Department of Homeland Security; Anish Chopra, former CTO of the U.S. Government; Nicole Wong, a former Deputy CTO of the U.S. Government and lawyer for both Google and Twitter; as well as Michael Sussmann, who is a practicing attorney at Perkins Coie and a former cyber law – used to work at the Department of Justice in their cyber law division.

The Democratic National Committee brushed aside warnings from the FBI that its computer network had been breached by hackers linked to the Russian government, according to a New York Times investigative report.
The Time's examination of the election-related cyber attacks, compiled through interviews with dozens of those targeted, found that the DNC's "series of missed signals, slow responses, and a continuing underestimation of the seriousness of the cyberattack" enabled Russia to "roam freely through" the committee's network for nearly seven months without pushback.
When the FBI attempted to alert a DNC tech-support contractor that a hacker had breached the committee's protected network, the staffer conducted a brief search of the DNC computer system logs to look for signs of intrusion. Even after the FBI continued to call over several weeks, the tech worker did little to heed the bureau's warnings. According to an internal memo, the staffer said he "had no way of differentiating the call I just received from a prank call," the Times reported.
Andrew Brown, the DNC's technology director, knew the tech contractor was taking calls from the FBI, but was preoccupied with evidence suggesting that the campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) had improperly accessed Hillary Clinton's campaign data.

On April 29, 2016, when the DNC became aware its servers had been penetrated, an emergency meeting was held between the Chairwoman of the DNC, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, DNC's Chief Executive, Amy Dacey, the DNC's Technology Director, Andrew Brown, and Michael Sussman, a lawyer for Perkins Coie, a Washington, DC law firm that represented the DNC. Sussman took control of the meeting, setting out the DNC's agenda when it came to dealing with the cyber attack on its server. The three most important questions, Sussman declared, were what data was accessed, how was it done, and how can it be stopped?

The one question Sussman, a former federal prosecutor who focused on computer crimes, did not ask was, who did it?

It took the DNC four days to decide to bring in an outside vendor to investigate the breach of its servers. In the end, it was Sussman who made the call to Shawn Henry at CrowdStrike. The call was made on May 4; by May 5 CrowdStrike had installed its FalconHost software that had triggered the Russian attribution.

This wasn't the first time CrowdStrike had been called in by the DNC. In December 2015 it tapped the company to conduct an audit of the circumstances surrounding a breach of security involving the DNC's party-administered voter file system?-?specialized software developed by the company NGP VAN known as VoteBuilder. Over the course of five weeks, CrowdStrike examined administrative logs from the DNC to assess user activity within the VoteBuilder system, and conducted a forensic examination of two other systems belonging to the campaign of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. The results of the CrowdStrike investigation were released on April 29, 2016?-?the same day the breach of DNC servers was detected.

Acting on FalconHost's May 5 alert, CrowdStrike poured over the data. FalconHost had found indicators?-?malware, techniques, and patterns of behavior?-?that suggested two APT's, Cozy Bear and Fancy Bear, were behind the cyber attack on the DNC. Shawn Henry now deployed CrowdStrike's Overwatch capabilities to answer the questions Sussman had asked: What data had been compromised, how did this compromise occur, and how could the DNC prevent future compromise?

At some point, the decision was made by the DNC and CrowdStrike to go ahead and regain control of the DNC servers. But to CrowdStrike, this wasn't enough. Sifting through the data collected by Shawn Henry and his Falcon Overwatch team, Dmitri Alperovitch was taken aback by the sheer audacity of what had transpired. Michael Sussman, the DNC legal counsel, agreed. "You have a presidential election underway here and you know that the Russians have hacked into the DNC," Mr. Sussman told the New York Times. "We need to tell the American public that. And soon."
