Ukrainians target Australian politician over Moscow trip
A neo-Nazi-linked activistwants the town councilor fired for observing Russia's presidential election
(Nazis in Ukraine, Want Nazi Action)
The Australian Federation ofUkrainian Organisations has demanded that a small-town councilor be firedfor traveling to Russia to observe the country's recent presidential election and congratulating Vladimir Putin on his "transparent and comprehensive" victory.
Adrian McRae of Port Hedland in Western Australia flew to Moscow last monthas part of an international delegation to scrutinize Russia's presidential election. A little-known councilor from a town of just 15,000 people, McRae drew attention back home when he appeared on Russian TV passing on his congratulations to Putin, who won with 87% of the vote.
"In my lifetime, the world has never seen such a transparent and comprehensive victory as what we saw here over the last three days,"McRae declared.
McRae's comments infuriated Australian Federation ofUkrainian Organisations (AFUO) co-chair Stefan Romanov.
"You've made the statements, you've offended people, you've gone against the international community, you're trying to portray a picture that those in Russia have voted for a presidentwho is now brutalizing Ukraine," Romanov fumed, addressing McRae via ABC News on Tuesday.
"You know what? Go and do your work with the Russian government, go and do your work with the Russian embassy and let somebody represent the community according to community values," Romanov added.
In addition to leading the AFUO, Romanov was the head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists' Stepan Bandera faction (OUN-B) from 2009 to 2022. Under Bandera and after his arrest, the OUN-B collaborated with Nazi Germany, taking part in the mass murder of Poles during World War II amid Adolf Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union. As OUN-B leader, Romanov has spoken at rallies organized by the neo-Nazi 'Svoboda' party in Ukraine.
Former Port Hedland Shire President Arnold Carter has joined Romanov in calling for McRae's dismissal, while Western Australia Premier Roger Cook called the councilor's comments "bizarre," and encouraged "the people of Port Hedland to express their dissatisfaction with that."
In an interview with Nine News on Monday, McRae explained that a "chance meeting" in January with Russian ambassador Alexey Pavlovsky had piqued his interest in traveling to Russia to observe the election. Fresh from winning his own local election in Port Hedland, he said that he arrived in Moscow last month with "a few, probably media-driven preconceived notions" about Russia.
"But coming back...their democracy is more transparent and more certainly more professionally run, the logistics and management of their election process leads anything I've seen, certainly in the West," he told the Australian network.
Allegations that McRae and his fellow observers were "being played" by Russian authorities, or that the election itself was unfair are "not only insulting to me," McRae said, "but I'm sure the Russian people, if they heard that, it would be an absolute slap in the face."
McRae added that he paid his own way to Russia, and that the trip "had nothing to do with anything Port Hedland council related."

Russia, Australia relations at lowest in decades: envoy
COURTNEY GOULD - JULY 7, 2022
Russian ambassador Alexey Pavlovsky has sensationally declared that Australia considers Moscow an enemy in a fiery interview where he vehemently denied the invasion of Ukraine was a war.
Russia has been shunned by the international community and kicked out of the G7 because of its war on Ukraine.
Foreign Minister Penny will come face-to-face with her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Bali on Thursday during a meeting of G20 ministers.
The ABC's Hamish Macdonald took the ambassador to task over the chaos and destruction caused by the war.
"How are you going to justify that at this summit?" he asked Dr Pavlovsky.
However, Vladimir Putin's man in Canberra did not respond, instead attempting to pivot towards addressing issues within the global economy.
But he rejected claims that Russia was responsible for the severe shortages of wheat and soaring gas and fuel prices.
"I would say the current global economic problems are rather caused by the West's hysteric reaction to Russia's actions in Ukraine," Dr Pavlovsky replied.
Macdonald hit back: "That's just blatantly not true. The current economic problems in part are caused by your invasion of Ukraine."
The ambassador claimed that Macdonald was taking an "emotional" view on the issue to which the host responded he was just reporting the facts.
"You're denying that you've tried to cut off access into and out of Ukraine," the ABC host responded.
"I'm sorry, sir, but this is not Russian state media. You can't get away with just making it up."
Dr Pavlovsky laughed off the comment and pressed on: "If you invited me on, you obviously are interested in my point of view. It is not Russian state media, but then don't invite me if you are not interested."
Avoiding labelling the invasion a war, Dr Pavlovsky said people could "call it as you wish" but insisted it was a "military operation".
"Our point of view - it is a military operation to protect people in Donbas and to protect the security interests of Russia which has been arrogantly ignored by the West," he said.
Dr Pavlovsky accused Ukraine of targeting "cities far from the frontline" and "deliberately and discriminately bombing the cities killing civilians".
"The ABC never talks about that," Dr Pavlovsky said. "Your coverage of the conflict has been entirely one-sided.
The ambassador claimed he had information from "different sources" that the situation on the ground was "very different".
"What are your other sources?" Macdonald quizzed.
"Independent sources," Dr Pavlovsky replied. "It is both Russian sources and independent sources."
Asked again to clarify "where he gets this stuff from," the ambassador pointed to France 24 news and the "many, many Western journalists" talking about Donbass welcoming Russian forces.
Dr Pavlovsky was unable to say what it would take for Russia to stop the war but remarked it was "very sad" that Australia had provided military aid to Ukraine.
"I would say that Australia does view Russia as an enemy," Dr Pavlovsky said.
"I wish I could say something positive about Russia and Australia relations, but they have reached probably the lowest point in decades."
It comes after Senator Wong called for countries with close ties to Russia - such as China - to call on Moscow to end the war in Ukraine.
But Dr Pavlovsky said Mr Lavrov would not engage in "virtue signalling".
"He is very busy with constructive dialogue with many countries and will not pay much attention to virtue signalling from certain leaders," he said.

Wong said on Thursday that she would continue to lobby Pacific Island nations against taking up security partnerships with China after Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare said he would like to see a permanent Chinese police presence in Honiara. Wong is scheduled to meet with Fiji Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama on Thursday to convey Australia's concerns.
"We have a very strong view that Pacific security should be the responsibility of the Pacific family and that will be the approach Australia takes both to the Pacific Islands foreign ministers meeting tomorrow and the Pacific Island leaders meeting next week," she said.
Wong also criticised Beijing's ongoing support of Russia and its failure to publicly pressure Moscow over its war in Ukraine.
"As a great power, as a global leader and as a permanent member of the Security Council, China has a special responsibility to uphold the UN Charter and international law," she said.
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Bali on Wednesday to take his position at the G20. Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed on Wednesday that he would travel to the G20 leader's summit in Bali in November for his first global meeting since invading Ukraine.
Wong said the G20 foreign ministers would confront Lavrov. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba is scheduled to address the meeting with Lavrov in the room.
"We'll be making very clear collectively our views about Russia's position and Russia's behaviour," she said.
Russia's ambassador to Australia Alexey Pavlovsky said the relationship between Australia and Russia had been destroyed.
"Australia does view Russia as an enemy," he told ABC Radio National on Thursday.
"[Russia] does view the situation with great sadness. I wish I could say something positive. But Russian-Australian relations have reached probably the lowest point in decades. So, I think whatever cooperation we had has been destroyed by the Australian side without giving much thought to what Australian interests are."
Wong said she would tell the G20 that Russia's actions were "illegal, unjust and immoral".
"If you ever wanted an example, of a nation which has chosen to denigrate and weaken multilateralism, [it is Russia]," said Wong. "If you ever want an example of a nation that has demonstrated its willingness to disregard the need for food security for a world recovering from a pandemic, it is Russia."

What is Australia saying?
Australia has joined the United States' government in labelling Russia's attacks on civilian areas in Ukraine as war crimes.
"The intentional targeting of civilians is a war crime, the bombing of civilian infrastructure, targeting schools where civilians are sheltering ... targeting air strikes onto a theatre where civilians were known to be sheltering, bombing maternity hospitals ... is a war crime," Australia's Foreign Minister, Marise Payne, said.
Senator Payne says the federal government is keeping the option of expelling the Russian ambassador on the table.
But Senator Payne has reiterated that having Alexey Pavlovsky in the country allows the government to continue to communicate with the Russian government.
"That does not mean the government has excluded that option [of expelling the ambassador]," she said.
The Foreign Minister also said the international community was facing the "sensitive" issue of whether to allow Russia to take part in the G20 meeting later this year in Indonesia.
"We are dealing not just in relation to the G20 but multiple international and multilateral organisations and gatherings where this is a matter that we have to address.
"We'll work closely with other members of the G20 on this," Senator Payne said.
"But Russia's participation ... is a serious issue and it's one the international community has to continue to examine."
Questions about Putin's attendance at G20
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has raised his and the federal government's concerns about Vladimir Putin attending a G20 meeting later this year.
The Russian President has signalled his intention to attend the meeting of the world's largest economies in Indonesia later this year, backed by China.
"[The invasion of Ukraine] is a violent and aggressive act that shatters the international rule of law, and the idea of sitting around a table with Vladimir Putin - who the United States are already in a position of calling out for war crimes in Ukraine, is for me, a step too far," Mr Morrison said.
"We have been making very clear statements and representations about our very strong concerns about the involvement of Russia in the G20 this year.
"We want the Indonesian G20 to be a great success we want it to focus particularly on the challenges of our region."
Senator Payne said it was ultimately up to the G20 to decide if Mr Putin could attend the November meeting.
"These are very sensitive issues, we are dealing in not just in relation to the G20 but multiple international and multilateral organisation where this is a matter we have to address," she said.

Russia sensationally claims Australia tampered with MH17 wreckage after the plane was shot down - as four separatists accused of killing 298 passengers and crew face court for the first time
The Russian ambassador to Australia has claimed that the country's federal police tampered with evidence from the MH17 plane wreckage.
Dr Alexey Pavlovsky believes integral evidence from the Malaysia Airlines flight that was shot down over the Ukraine was falsified by Australian investigators.
A total of 298 people were killed, including 38 Australians, when a BUK missile shot down the Boeing 777 from Ukrainian territory held by pro-Russia separatists in July 2014.
Dr Pavlovsky claimed that there are flaws in the investigation which was made to reach a predetermined result and blame Russia for the attack.
'The experts say that many of these pictures have been heavily tampered with and it seems that the Australian Federal Police as part of the investigation also had information to this effect but it somehow chose to withhold it from the public,' he told 9News.
Analysts from the MH17 Joint Investigation Team (JIT) included representatives from Australia, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Belgium and Ukraine.
The JIT have charged Russia's Igor Girkin, Sergei Dubinsky and Oleg Pulatov and Ukraine's Leonid Kharchenko with the tragedy, with a trial to begin on Monday.
Footage used in evidence by the JIT showed a truck with a BUK missile from the Russian armed forces travelling from Russia to the Ukraine before returning with no missile.
Russia has denied this accusation, with Dr Pavlovsky saying it is important to establish the truth for the victims families.
'I saw on the internet some copies of the documents indicating the Australian participants to the JIT at least had some signals on the pictures presented as evidence being falsified,' he said.
Dr Pavlovsky believes any evidence that is contrary to blaming Russia for shooting down the plane has been hidden by the Australian and international media.
'The investigation was based on falsified pictures and on the recordings provided by the security services of Ukraine. For me that's quite enough to smell a rat here,' Dr Pavlovsky said.
The Australian Federal Police have denied accusations of using falsified evidence.
Many questions remain unanswered more than five years after the tragedy.
Former Australian foreign affairs minister Julie Bishop told the ABC in 2018 that Russia needed to explain why a missile was taken Russia to Ukraine prior to the attack.
'The Russian Federation must answer how it is that a sophisticated weapon, a BUK missile, was transported from Russia into Eastern Ukraine and was used to bring down a civilian aircraft carrying 298 people and then was immediately taken back into Russia,' she said.
None of the accused will appear in court because both Russia and the Ukraine don't extradite citizens for criminal trials.
Because of this, any sentence imposed may not be served as the Netherlands has no authority over either country.
There is a possibility for more people to be charged over the incident, with the accused facing life in jail under Dutch law.

MH17 investigation: Russia's ambassador to Australia accuses AFP of cover-up
On the eve of the trial of three Russians accused of murder over the downing of MH17, the Russian ambassador to Australia has accused Federal Police of a cover-up.
In a rare exclusive interview with 9NEWS Dr Alexey Pavlovsky, a long-time Russian diplomat, claimed key photographic evidence was "falsified" and withheld from the public.
It's a claim denied by the Australian Federal Police.
Thirty-eight Australians were among 298 people killed when a BUK missile shot down the Malaysian airlines flight in Ukraine in 2014.
