Argentina ends deal on disputed islands with UK
The Foradori-Duncan Pact on the Falklands/Malvinas was seen as conceding too much
Buenos Aires has formally renounced a 2016 deal with the UK regarding the disputed Falklands/Malvinas islands in the South Atlantic, the site of a bloody 1982 conflict, saying on Thursday thatthe matter needs to be resolved under the UN guidelines on decolonization. London insists that the matter was settled after local residents chose in a referendum to be ruled by Britain.
Argentinian Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero said he informed his British counterpart James Cleverly of the decision at their meeting in New Delhi, India, on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
Argentina "has proposed to resume negotiations on the question of sovereignty," in compliance with the mandate of the UN General Assembly and the world body's Committee on Decolonization, added Cafiero.
"The Falkland Islands are British," Cleverly responded. "Islanders have the right to decide their own future - they have chosen to remain a self-governing UK Overseas Territory."
Minister for the Americas David Rutley, who had just visited Buenos Aires, called the decision "disappointing" and accused Argentina of choosing to "step away from an agreement that has brought comfort to the families of those who died in the 1982 conflict."
The disputed islands are located in the South Atlantic, about 600 kilometers off the Argentine mainland. Argentina lays claim to what it calls the Islas Malvinas, sayingthey were part of the territory granted independence from Spain in 1816.
The UK has ruled what it calls the Falkland Islands since 1833. Argentina and the UK fought a ten-week war over the islands in 1982, whichclaimed almost 1,000 livesand ended in a British victory.
A nonbinding UN General Assembly resolution from 1965 called on both countries to not make unilateral changes in the dispute over the islands.
In the 2016 pact,Argentina and the UK agreed to disagree over sovereignty, but pledged to cooperate on energy, shipping, fishing, transportation and identifying the remains of soldiers killed in the conflict. Alan Duncan, the minister who negotiated the deal with Argentina's deputy FM Carlos Foradori, insinuated in hisdiaries that the talks were fueled by a constant supply of Merlot from the British embassy's wine cellar. Foradori has denied this.
Remember the Falklands, it seems like Africa and South Americans are kicking out the occupiers

UK Govt Deployed 15 Staff on Secret Op to Seize Assange
Assange had been granted asylum by a friendly country to avoid persecution by the U.S. government for his journalistic activities
But Home Office had eight staff, and the Cabinet Office had seven, working on secret police operation to arrest Assange
Ministry of Justice, which controls England's courts and prisons, refuses to say if its staff were involved in operation
Foreign Office refuses to say if its premises were used
The British government assigned at least 15 people to the secret operation to seize Julian Assange from the Ecuadorian embassy in London, new information shows.
The WikiLeaks founder was given political asylum by Ecuador in 2012, but was never allowed safe passage out of Britain to avoid persecution by the U.S. government.
The Australian journalist has been in Belmarsh maximum-security prison for the past three and a half years and faces a potential 175-year sentence after the High Court of England and Wales green-lighted his extradition to the U.S. in December 2021.
"Pelican" was the secret Metropolitan Police operation to seize Assange from his asylum, which eventually occurred in April 2019. Asylum is a right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The operation's existence was only revealed in the memoirs of former Foreign Minister Sir Alan Duncan which were published last year. The U.K. government routinely blocks, or obfuscates its answers to information requests about the Assange case.
But the Cabinet Office recently told Parliament it had seven officials working on Operation Pelican. The department's role is to "support the Prime Minister and ensure the effective running of government," but it also has national security and intelligence functions.
It is not immediately clear why the Cabinet Office would have so many personnel working on a police operation of this kind. Asked about their role, the Cabinet Office said these seven officials "liaised" with the Metropolitan Police on the operation.
The Home Office, meanwhile, told Parliament it had eight officials working on Pelican. The Home Office oversees MI5 and the head of the department has to sign off extraditions to most foreign countries. The then home secretary, Priti Patel, ordered Assange's extradition to the U.S. in June.
'Disproportionate Cost'
Other government ministries refused to say if they had staff working on Pelican, including the Ministry of Justice (MoJ).
The MoJ is in charge of courts in England and Wales, where Assange's extradition case is currently deciding whether to hear an appeal. It is also in control of its prisons, including Belmarsh maximum security jail where Assange is incarcerated.
When asked if any of its staff were assigned to Pelican, the MoJ claimed: "The information requested could only be obtained at disproportionate cost."
It is unclear why the Home Office, a bigger department with more staff, could answer such a question, but the MoJ could not. There is no obvious reason why the MoJ would have staff assigned to Pelican, so revelations that it did would cause embarrassment for the government.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Office told Parliament it had no staff "directly assigned" to Pelican, but refused to say if people working on the operation were located on its premises.

Former Israel Embassy staffer exposed in 'The Lobby' wins local council seat for Labour
A former staff member at the Embassy of Israel in London who featured in the sensational Al Jazeera documentary "The Lobby" has been elected as a Labour councillor in last week's local election. With fewer than two thousand votes, Ella Rose took the council seat in Whetstone ward of the London Borough of Barnet. She said that she was "deeply honoured" to be part of the now Labour-controlled borough.
Rose was featured in the 2017 four-part documentary which exposed a senior political officer at the Israeli Embassy, Shai Masot, talking about a plot to "take down" foreign office minister Sir Alan Duncan, as well as other MPs deemed to be critical of Israeli policy.
As the then director of Israeli advocacy group the Jewish Labour Movement, Rose was caught on camera reacting angrily to The Electronic Intifada's revelation that she had previously worked at the embassy. A photo in The Electronic Intifada article showed Rose at a January 2015 meeting with then Prime Minister David Cameron which discussed opposition to "boycotts and the delegitimisation of Israel."
Rose is heard wishing for her critics to "die in a hole" and using expletives in the programme. The footage shows her referring to her critics as "anti-Semites, the lot of them," and expressing a wish for violent revenge against her enemies, including Jewish activist Jackie Walker, a long-time anti-racist and anti-Zionist member of the Labour Party.
"I saw Jackie Walker on Saturday and thought, you know what, I could take her, she's like 5'2 and tiny," Rose said in an apparent threat to the now ex-Labour activist. "That's why I can take Jackie Walker. Krav Maga training." This was a reference to the Israeli army's hand-to-hand fighting technique. "I'm not bad at it. If it came to it I would win, that's all I really care about."
Several party members wrote to Labour complaining about Rose's conduct in the video. An investigation was closed after just nine days. One of the individuals who lodged a complaint against her accused Labour's General Secretary at the time, Iain McNicol, of a "whitewash".
According to The Electronic Intifada, McNicol conceded to the complainant that he had "conducted an investigation into the allegations which you made," and accepted that "some of the language which Ms. Rose is filmed using does fall below the standards expected of Labour Party members."
However, he went on to say that since Rose had "made clear" to him that "she was not a violent person" and that she had been "engaged in a private conversation with someone she considered to be a friend... Ms. Rose's comments did not constitute a threat."
Rose was outed in 2016 as having worked in the Israeli Embassy where she is believed to have been employed as a public affairs officer between September 2015 and August 2016.

More revelations of state corruption in the Assange extradition hearing.
Assange judge is 40-year "good friend" of minister who orchestrated his arrest
Julian Assange's fate lies in the hands of an appeal judge who is a close friend of Sir Alan Duncan - the former foreign minister who called Assange a "miserable little worm" in parliament.
Lord Chief Justice Ian Burnett, the judge that will soon decide Julian Assange's fate, is a close personal friend of Sir Alan Duncan, who as foreign minister arranged Assange's eviction from the Ecuadorian embassy.
The two have known each other since their student days at Oxford in the 1970s, when Duncan called Burnett "the Judge". Burnett and his wife attended Duncan's birthday dinner at a members-only London club in 2017, when Burnett was a judge at the court of appeal.
Now the most powerful judge in England and Wales, Burnett will soon rule on Assange's extradition case. The founder of WikiLeaks faces life imprisonment in the US.
In his recently published diaries, In The Thick of It, Duncan wrote in July 2017: "My good friend and Oxford contemporary Ian Burnett is announced as the next Lord Chief Justice."
He continued: "At Oxford we always called him 'the Judge' and they always called me 'Prime Minister', but Ian's the one who's got there."
In an emailed response to Declassified, Lord Chief Justice Burnett confirmed he and Duncan have been "friends since university days".
Duncan studied politics and economics at St John's College, Oxford from 1976-79, while Burnett studied jurisprudence at Pembroke College in the same period.
"At Oxford we always called him 'the Judge' and they always called me 'Prime Minister'"
"Miserable little worm"
Duncan's diaries also show that as foreign minister he spoke privately to Lord Chief Justice Burnett in May 2019, a conversation that was not logged in government records. Burnett briefed him on a dinner he'd had with then prime minister Theresa May two days before.
But Duncan told Declassified: "There was nothing that was required to be 'logged in government records'." He and Burnett both said nothing related to their roles as a minister or judge was discussed.
Duncan served as foreign minister for Europe and the Americas from 2016-19. He was the key official in the UK government campaign to force Assange from the embassy.
As minister, Duncan did not hide his opposition to Julian Assange, calling him a "miserable little worm" in parliament in March 2018.
In his diaries, Duncan refers to the "supposed human rights of Julian Assange". He admits to arranging a Daily Mail hit piece on Assange that was published the day after the journalist's arrest in April 2019.
Duncan watched UK police pulling the WikiLeaks publisher from the Ecuadorian embassy via a live-feed in the Operations Room at the top of the Foreign Office.
He later admitted he was "trying to keep the smirk off [his] face", and hosted drinks at his parliamentary office for the team involved in the eviction.
Duncan then flew to Ecuador to meet President Len?n Moreno in order to "say thank you" for handing over Assange. Duncan reported he gave Moreno "a beautiful porcelain plate from the Buckingham Palace gift shop."
"Job done," he added.
"Generous present"
Duncan's diaries also highlight a birthday dinner held for him in June 2017 that was attended by Burnett and his wife. The dinner, held at the private Beefsteak club in London the day before the general election, was a "generous present from David Ross", Duncan noted.
Ross, a businessman and co-founder of Carphone Warehouse, has funded an array of Conservative MPs, including Duncan, and gave the Conservative Party ?250,000 to fight the 2019 election.
Other guests included the Syrian-Saudi billionaire businessman Wafic Said. Long close to the Saudi royal family, Said helped negotiate the massive UK-Saudi arms deal known as al-Yamamah in the 1980s.
Said's wife, Rosemary, who was also in attendance, is another major donor to the Conservative Party and has funded Boris Johnson. She was a guest at David Cameron's "Leader's Group" meetings of key party donors.
Other attendees at Duncan's birthday dinner included William Hague, Duncan's close colleague and friend, who was foreign secretary when the UK decided not to recognise the asylum granted to Assange by the Ecuadorian government.
Also present was Salma Shah, an adviser to Sajid Javid when, as home secretary, he controversially certified the initial US extradition request for Assange.
Sir Alan Duncan and Lord Chief Justice Burnett both told Declassified they have never discussed the Julian Assange case with each other.

Former British Minister: 'Israelis Think They Control the Foreign Office. And They do!'
Matt Kennard reports on revelations of Israeli state influence on U.K. politics in Alan Duncan's recently published diaries.
From revelations about Israeli efforts to "destroy" him, to attempts by a powerful pro-Israel lobby group to stop him becoming a minister for the Middle East, Sir Alan Duncan saw up close the power of the Israeli state in British politics during his time at the heart of the U.K. government.
Duncan served as British foreign minister from 2016-19, having previously held the international development brief. His new book, In The Thick Of It, reveals much about U.K. government policy that has been missed by the British press and broadcasters.
At the beginning of 2017, media outlet Al Jazeera contacted Duncan to inform him about its undercover investigation into Israeli influence in U.K. politics, which included revelations related to him personally.
Duncan wrote in his diary that Al Jazeera "has footage of diplomats from the Israeli embassy in London collaborating with MPs from both Labour and Conservatives on Israel." He said this included Shai Masot, a diplomat from the Israeli embassy "calling for them to destroy the 'Deputy Foreign Minister' (i.e. me), so that he never becomes Foreign Secretary."
Duncan added: "They say that if [then foreign secretary] Boris [Johnson] were to be sacked, I'd take over and so both such moments have to be stopped."
Days later, Duncan went to the Foreign Office to brief Simon McDonald, who was then running the department, on the revelations.
Duncan wrote: "I teasingly remind him of what happened and what I said to him on my first day as minister. 'Simon... didn't I tell you? The CFI and the Israelis think they control the Foreign Office. And they do!'"
The CFI is Conservative Friends of Israel, a powerful Westminster lobby group that does not disclose its funders but has claimed 80 percent of Conservative MPs are members.
'They Shouldn't Behave Like This'
On the same day, Duncan spoke on the phone to Mark Regev, then Israel's ambassador to Britain. According to Duncan, Regev told him Masot is a "local hire, works in a junior capacity and does not have diplomatic status."
"It's all total bollocks," Duncan wrote. "Masot is a First or Second Secretary, a member of military intelligence, employed specifically as a parliamentary and undercover propagandist."
He continued: "What on earth is the point of Regev stating something that is so blatantly untrue, and about which we both hold the facts? What a muppet."
Duncan then briefed Boris Johnson who was "indignant".
"'They shouldn't behave like this,' [Johnson] exclaimed, though I'd told him a million times that they do."
Duncan confided that he withheld some information from Johnson: "The Al Jazeera tapes essentially say that I run the [Foreign Office], BoJo is an idiot, I take the serious decisions, and if anything happens to Boris I will become Foreign Secretary and so I must be destroyed. It's a poor reading of the facts - indeed, it's balls - but it gives a useful insight into Israel's mentality."
The Al Jazeera documentary also uncovered the degree of Israeli state influence over the opposition Labour Party.
In a conversation filmed outside a London pub, Michael Rubin, the parliamentary officer for Labour Friends of Israel (LFI), which counts dozens of Labour MPs as either "officers" or "supporters," revealed the close links between the group and the Israeli embassy in London.
Rubin said that he and Shai Masot "work really closely together... but a lot of it is behind the scenes." He added that "the [Israeli] embassy helps us quite a lot. When bad stories come out about Israel, the embassy sends us information so that we can counter it."

Revealed: The UK government campaign to force Julian Assange from the Ecuadorian embassy
The UK government paid £8,330 in November 2018 to bring Ecuador's defence minister Oswaldo Jarrín to Britain, two months before the planned seizure of Julian Assange from the Ecuadorian embassy in London, it can be revealed.
It is unusual for foreign ministers to have their trips to the UK paid by the British government, and the week-long visit came after prime minister Theresa May had been told to "butter up" Ecuador's president, Lenín Moreno, in order to get Assange expelled from the embassy.
The new information comes from UK Foreign Office documents released to Declassified, as well as the recently published diaries of former foreign office minister, Sir Alan Duncan, who was a key player in the Assange negotiations.
The documents note that "the main objective" of the November 2018 visit was Jarrín's "participation" at an annual national counter-terrorism exercise that rehearses the government's response to a major terrorist attack.
The exercise is organised by the Office for Security and Counter-Terrorism, a part of the Home Office which "oversees the Security Service [MI5] and police counter-terrorism operations in the UK".
It is unclear why Ecuador's defence minister was chosen to attend a counter-terrorism exercise as the South American nation is not a target of terrorist groups.
The documents note that "one of the main meetings" was with then armed forces minister Mark Lancaster, after which the Ministry of Defence reported the two countries were "strengthening our ties".

Israel and Saudi Arabia buy influence in Britain as the lobbying scandal grows
Corruption in Britain is reaching startling new heights as lobby scandals threaten to engulf the government in a tsunami of sleaze. Leading the way, it seems, are both Israel and Saudi Arabia, each ruthless in the pursuit of backdoor access to the highest echelons of power in order to get their own way.
When Israel is involved in such activities, it is usually the Palestinians who pay the price demanded by right-wing, pro-Israel lobby groups. With the Saudis, though, it's usually a matter of vanity and saving face.
Newspaper headlines are full of lobbying scandals at the moment involving former British Prime Minister David Cameron, and it seems that Theresa May's government was also targeted, at least according to a former minister. However, it is now clear that Boris Johnson is also coming under fire for his alleged links to sleaze and dodgy dealings.
Johnson's government recently opposed the International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation into war crimes allegedly committed by Israel after, it is said, some arm-twisting by pro-Israel lobby groups. The move prompted the Palestinian Embassy to the UK to accuse Britain of flouting international law and subverting "the rules-based global order" while ultimately harming peace efforts in Palestine.
The accusation comes hot on the heels of a hard-hitting interview given by former Foreign Office Minister Sir Alan Duncan, who revealed that pro-Israel lobbyists had embroiled themselves in "the most disgusting interference" in British politics, with negative influence on Britain's Middle East policy.

Brit commits political an hero in attempt to force No Confidence vote on Boris Johnson
LONDON (Reuters) - Ex-foreign office minister Alan Duncan quit his post on Monday to try to force an emergency vote testing parliament's confidence in a new Conservative prime minister but the speaker John Bercow turned down the request, the BBC reported.
Britain's ruling Conservative Party is set to name a new leader on Tuesday who will become prime minister and replace Theresa May. Former foreign minister Boris Johnson is expected to win the leadership contest.
"Alan Duncan tells @BBCNews he quit govt so he could push for an emergency vote tomorrow, after the next PM (prime minister) is announced, to test if they can hold a majority," BBC Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg said on Twitter on Monday.
"Alan astonished that Bercow has turned his request down, and fears much bigger meltdown after recess when next PM can't hold a majority in the Commons - his critics may reckon he was trying to kill off a Johnson govt before he's even gone to the Palace."

UK Minister Resigns, Tries To Topple Johnson Government Before It's Even Official
In a race that has been marked by mostly harmless scandal (the altercation between Boris Johnson and girlfriend Carrie Symonds being an exception), some exciting developments are threatening to topple Johnson's administration before it even begins.
Ministers' discomfort with serving under Boris Johnson have manifested in a series of resignations in recent days.
And on Monday, one of Johnson's longtime enemies within the Conservative Party became the latest to resign and try to be a thorn in Johnson's side, and possibly even scuttle hiswell-laid path to No. 10.
In a letter to Prime Minister Theresa May, Sir Alan Duncan resigned his post as foreign office minister, saying it was "customary" for ministers to step aside upon the changing of a PM, and added that it would free to "express my views" ahead of May leaving office.
May accepted Duncan's offer and thanked him for his "distinguished" service.

Though many still refuse to believe that Brexit, or a no-deal Brexit, is even possible…..Duncan immediately tried calling for a vote that, through a series of technicalities, would have amounted to a de facto confidence vote in Johnson.
But Duncan was stymied by Speaker John Bercow, who blocked his bid.
But even if enough support for the next leader was registered in the vote, it might have exposed how shaky a Johnson government would be.
Here's the motion Duncan wanted a vote on… pic.twitter.com/n1SyeVZtbC

If Johnson (still hypothetical remember) didn't have the numbers in the Commons, then he would not have become PM… I know it's 2019, but it's still pretty extraordinary that a Tory wants to give the Commons the opportunity to stop the next Tory leader getting into Number 10
- Laura Kuenssberg (@bbclaurak) July 22, 2019
5. Last thought on this for now - this move is clearly not something Duncan dreamt up overnight - and that may be the worrying thing for Team Johnson - there are MP s who know their way around the system extremely well who won't be on his side
- Laura Kuenssberg (@bbclaurak) July 22, 2019
In an interview with the BBC, Duncan said he wanted the Commons to hold an effective confidence vote in Johnson on Tuesday, after Johnson is declared the new Tory leader, but one day before he is sworn in as PM. Some saw the maneuver as a long-time critic trying to undercut Johnson, but Duncan insisted he wanted Johnson's government to succeed.
But, Duncan argued, this would be the first time in living memory where a minority government changes PM mid-term. To avoid a "constitutional crisis," Duncan said he thought it was important to establish that Johnson had the confidence of the Commons.
Recent polls show Johnson is expected to defeat his rival, Jeremy Hunt, by a landslide. But with Duncan now the fourth minister to resign from May's government in recent days, the vote just underscores how tenuous Johnson's government's grip on power will be.
Duncan, who once served under Johnson when Johnson was Foreign Secretary, said he was "totally" loyal to Johnson when he was his deputy, but that he nonetheless had serious concerns about Johnson's ability to lead. He suggested that he believes Jeremy Hunt, Johnson's opponent and Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, would be the more competent leader, despite widely held expectations that Johnson will win a ballot of Tory members.
"When I was his deputy I was totally loyal. We never had an argument. I never bad mouthed him. So I've served both foreign secretaries. And I've no doubt which of the two is the more capable and more competent. So I have very grave concerns that he flies by the seat of his pants, and it's all a bit haphazard and ramshackle. But there's no personal animosity of any sort. I just think he's going to go smack into a crisis of government."
Rumors have been spreading that Europe is preparing to offer Johnson a new deal to try and avert a "no deal" Brexit, something that Johnson seems increasingly intent on delivering.https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-07-22/minister-resigns-tries-topple-johnson-government-its-even-official

Bank Of England Urged To Hand Over Venezuela's Gold To Guaidó
Guaidó has already written to Theresa May asking for the funds to be sent to him.
Just hours after The Bank of England refused to hand over $1.2 billion of Venezuela's gold from its custody vaults (stored there after the completion of a gold-swap transcation with Deutsche Bank) to President Maduro (after heavy lobbying from US officials), The Guardian reports that a UK foreign office minister is now urging the same Bank of England to transfer the bullion to the self-proclaimed interim leader Juan Guaidó.
In a statement to British MPs, Sir Alan Duncan said the decision was a matter for the Bank and its governor, Mark Carney, and not the government. But he added:
"It is they who have to make a decision on this, but no doubt when they do so they will take into account there are now a large number of countries across the world questioning the legitimacy of Nicolás Maduro and recognising that of Juan Guaidó."
Guaidó has already written to Theresa May asking for the funds to be sent to him.
The former chair of the foreign affairs select committee Crispin Blunt said the current Venezuelan central bank president was not legitimate, since he had not been appointed by the country's national assembly.
Blunt has sent letters to the foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, and to the chancellor, Philip Hammond, urging a decision.
Notably, the reason the BoE initially gave for its initial refusal to release was due to its insistence that standard measures to prevent money-laundering be taken - "including clarification of the Venezuelan government's intentions for the gold."
"There are concerns that Mr. Maduro may seize the gold, which is owned by the state, and sell it for personal gain," the newspaper said.
Separately, as we reported previously an official told Reuters that the repatriation plan has been held up for nearly two months due to difficulty in obtaining insurance for the shipment, needed to move a large gold cargo:
"They are still trying to find insurance coverage, because the costs are high," an official told Reuters.
All of which appears to have suddenly been swept under the carpet now Guaidó has been installed.

U.N. tells UK: Allow Assange to leave Ecuador embassy freely
U.N. rights experts called on British authorities on Friday to allow WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to leave the Ecuador embassy in London without fear of arrest or extradition. The U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention reiterated its finding published in February 2016 that Assange had been de facto unlawfully held without charge in the embassy, where he has now been holed up for more than six years. He initially took asylum to avoid being extradited to Sweden, where authorities wanted to question him as part of a sexual assault investigation. That investigation was dropped.
Assange, whose website published thousands of classified U.S. government documents, denied the Sweden allegations, saying the charge was a ploy that would eventually take him to the United States where prosecutors are preparing to pursue a criminal case against him. Britain says Assange will be arrested for skipping bail if he leaves the embassy, but that any sentence would not exceed six months, if convicted. It had no immediate comment on the experts' call, but in June, foreign office minister Alan Duncan said Assange would be treated humanely and properly. "The only ground remaining for Mr Assange's continued deprivation of liberty is a bail violation in the UK, which is, objectively, a minor offense that cannot post facto justify the more than six years confinement that he has been subjected to since he sought asylum in the Embassy of Ecuador," the U.N. experts said in a statement. "It is time that Mr Assange, who has already paid a high price for peacefully exercising his rights to freedom of opinion, expression and information, and to promote the right to truth in the public interest, recovers his freedom," they said.
Lawyers for Assange and others have said his work with WikiLeaks was critical to a free press and was protected speech. The experts voiced concern that his "deprivation of liberty" was undermining his health and could "endanger his life" given the disproportionate amount of anxiety that has entailed. Ecuador in October imposed new rules requiring him to receive routine medical exams, following concern he was not getting the medical attention he needed. The rules also ordered him to pay medical and phone bills and clean up after his cat. Assange has sued Ecuador, arguing the rules violate his rights. An Ecuadorean court on Friday upheld a prior ruling dismissing Assange's suit. "We have lost again," said Carlos Povedo, Assange's attorney in Ecuador, adding that the legal team would consider bringing a case to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Assange Update: Deal between Ecuador and UK to hand over Julian Assange is 'imminent' and Wikileaks founder could then be sent to US to face spy charges
A deal between Ecuador and the UK to hand over Julian Assange is 'imminent'
Ecuador President thought to have visited British officials to finalise agreement
A source close to President's office said Lenin Moreno is close to agreeing a deal
A source close to the President's office confirmed that Mr Moreno is near to agreeing a deal which could see Ecuador withdraw its asylum protection of the Wikileaks founder within the next several weeks.
Senior foreign officials, believed to include the Foreign Office minister Sir Alan Duncan, were in talks to try and decide Mr Assange's future, according to The Sunday Times.
Yet sources close to Mr Assange believe his political asylum cannot be revoked and that he was not aware of the high-level talks.
Foreign Office Minister Sir Alan Duncan previously branded Mr Assange a 'miserable little worm' during a Commons debate in March, adding he should leave the Ecuadorean embassy and surrender to British justice.

Ecuador to hand over Assange to UK 'in coming weeks or days,' own sources tell RT's editor-in chief
Published time: 20 Jul, 2018 11:12
Ecuador is ready to hand over the WikiLeaks founder to the UK in "coming weeks or even days," RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan said citing her own sources, as prospects of his eviction from the embassy are back in the media.
"My sources tell [Julian] Assange will be handed over to Britain in the coming weeks or even days," Simonyan wrote in a recent tweet which was reposted by WikiLeaks. "Like never before, I wish my sources were wrong," she continued.
Simonyan's message comes, as speculations Ecuador is in talks with the UK over the future of Assange are back again in British press. Earlier this week, the Times reported Britain is locked in top-tier discussions with the Ecuadorians in a bid to remove Assange from their London embassy.
Sir Alan Duncan, the Foreign Office minister, is said to be spearheading the diplomatic effort. Sources close to Assange said he himself was not aware of the talks but believed that America was putting "significant pressure" on Ecuador, including threatening to block a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) if he continues to stay at the embassy.
The Times report comes just weeks before a visit to the UK by the newly-elected Ecuadorian president Lenin Moreno, who has labeled Assange a "hacker", an "inherited problem" and a "stone in the shoe."
There have been other worrying signs indicating Assange is steadily becoming a troublemaker for Ecuador. In late March this year, the Ecuadorian government has suspended Assange's communication privileges with the outside world, cutting off his Internet connection at the embassy.
The move was sparked by Assange's alleged breach of an agreement to refrain from interfering in other states' affairs. Previously, he blasted the Spanish government for cracking down on the CatAlan independence movement.
Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy since 2012 when he asked the Latin American state for asylum. The 47-year-old was wanted by Sweden on sexual assault allegations, but feared the extradition would lead to him being transferred to the US and prosecuted without a fair trial.
The US has been saying that Assange was "engaged in terrorism," with Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, last year calling his arrest a "priority." Over the years, WikiLeaks has published hundreds of thousands of classified US files, including the cables on the Iraq War, leaked by whistleblower Chelsea Manning in 2010.
Despite the Swedish investigation against him being closed in May last year, the Australian journalist was still unable to leave the embassy because of an outstanding British warrant for allegedly breaching bail conditions and no guarantees of him not being sent to the US.

Ecuador in talks to evict Julian Assange, its 'stone in the shoe'
The South American state and UK ministers are trying to find a way to evict the WikiLeaks founder from its London embassy
Britain is in high-level talks with Ecuador in an attempt to remove Julian Assange from its London embassy, where he has been sheltering for more than six years.
Ministers and senior Foreign Office officials are locked in discussions over the fate of Assange, the founder and editor of WikiLeaks, who claimed political asylum from Ecuador in 2012 and who believes he will be extradited to the United States if he leaves the embassy in Knightsbridge, central London.
Sir Alan Duncan, the Foreign Office minister, is understood to be involved in the diplomatic effort, which comes weeks before a visit to the UK by Lenin Moreno, the new Ecuadorean president, who has called Assange a "hacker", an "inherited problem" and a "stone in the shoe".

Julian Assange is in "deteriorating" health, MPs have been told. In response to a question about Assange, the WikiLeaks founder who has been sheltering in the Ecuadorian embassy for almost six years to avoid arrest, Sir Alan Duncan, the Foreign Office minister, told MPs:
We are, however, increasingly concerned about [Assange's] health. And it is our wish that this can be brought to an end. And we would like to make the assurance that, if he were to step out of the embassy, he would be treated humanly and properly and that the first priority would be to look after his health, which we think is deteriorating.

"Glencore is more of a crime syndicate than a business"
https://www.iol.co.za/business-report/opinion/glencore-is-more-of-a-crime-syndicate-than-a-business-b05f6386-4c96-418a-94a6-d1d6bfe5762d
May 31, 2022
Glencore, the largest natural resources company in the world, is more of a crime syndicate than a business.
After becoming a fugitive for 18 years and being on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List, President Bill Clinton pardoned [Marc Rich]
Today, Marc Rich's successor companies, Glencore Xstrata and Trafigura, control the price of just about every commodity.
They also dominate a considerable share of South African and global natural resources, led by South African billionaire Ivan Glasenberg who worked for Rich in the 1980s.
Another one of Rich's students is Alan Duncan, a British minister between 2010 and 2019. During his employment at Rich's company, Duncan violated sanctions in the 1980s by supplying oil to South Africa. He is alleged to have moved oil from Brunei to Durban and earned about ?100K a year in the process.
John Deuss is another one of Marc Rich's proteges. Deuss, a Dutchman described as "sleazy", supplied 57% of South Africa's oil imports by 1981, and made $500 million.
Deuss used false flags, forged cargo papers and mid-sea cargo transshipments to move oil for the Apartheid regime.
In 1991, he signed a new contract to supply 45 000 barrels per day, an increase of 15 000 from the previous year.
These examples are to demonstrate the calibre of individuals that led Marc Rich + Co./Glencore.
Fast forward to 2021, former Glencore CEO Ivan Glasenberg refused to appear before the State Capture Commission after he was implicated as being the "mastermind" behind the "collapse" of Eskom, after allegedly bribing the current president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa with a chairmanship at one of his mining companies in 2012.
Glencore and Ramaphosa first did business together in 2005 when Glasenberg picked Ramaphosa's company, Shanduka as its BEE partner on a coal export project before joining forces again in 2012 to supply coal via Glencore subsidiary, Optimum.
The allegations against Glencore were as follows: Cyril Ramaphosa was given a 9.64% stake in Glencore and become Chairman after the company had bought Optimum Coal Holdings (Eskom's coal supplier in 2011).
According to former Eskom GCEO Brian Molefe, Glasenberg and Glencore appointed Ramaphosa to Optimum, to exert "political influence and the extent to which Glencore would be able to exert pressure on Eskom directors and management."
In 2014, Glencore subsidiary Optimum, chaired by Ramaphosa, renegotiated a 40-year coal contract with Eskom, demanding an increase from R150 to R530 a ton and a waiver of the R2 billion penalties accrued from failing to meet the existing supply agreement.
When Eskom tried to enforce the penalties, they were threatened with Ramaphosa's name, according to former Eskom Interim CEO Matshela Koko, while the Glencore subsidiary claimed it only owed R16 million in penalties.
To further show the decades-old culture of skullduggery at Glencore; Clinton Ephron, who was Optimum CEO at the time Ramaphosa was appointed to chair the company's board, went to the State Capture Commission and lied under oath saying Ramaphosa was never the Chairman of Optimum.
In February 2022, Glencore set aside $1.5 billion to be used to pay fines for bribing government officials and market manipulation in Brazil, Britain, the DRC, Nigeria, the US, and Venezuela.
Yet, interestingly, the South African government, under Ramaphosa, has raised no complaints against Glencore.
