George H.W. Bush rang in the New Year of 1992 with a 12-day trade-focused trip to Asia and the Pacific to discuss America's post-Cold War readjustment of economic relations and policies.[1] On 8 January 1992, Bush played a doubles tennis match with U.S. ambassador to Japan Michael Armacost against Emperor of Japan Akihito and his son, Crown Prince Naruhito. The emperor and crown prince won.[2]
That evening, Bush attended a state event for 135 diplomats held at the Japanese Prime Minister's residence. Between the second and third courses, Bush, who had been scheduled to give remarks at the dinner, fainted in his chair while vomiting in Miyazawa's lap. First Lady Barbara Bush held a napkin to her husband's mouth until the United States Secret Service took over. While still on the floor, Bush quipped to his personal physician, Burton Lee, "Roll me under the table until the dinner's over."[3] He assured dinner guests he had "influenza" and left for the evening. Barbara Bush later gave a speech in President Bush's place where she affectionately teased Armacost for the tennis game and jokingly claimed defeat was something her family was not used to.[2]
The following day, 9 January, spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said Bush had a common intestinal flu and he was feeling fine.[4] That afternoon, Bush held a news conference with Akihito at the Akasaka Palace.[5]

Bush years and dismissal
White House Executive Chefs do not normally change when a new administration arrives, and, as usual, President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush retained Scheib when they entered the White House in 2000. However, the Bushes had different tastes and styles than the Clintons. Laura Bush wanted a more formal presentation at meals, and President Bush disliked soup, salad, and poached fish-staples of Scheib's cuisine.[2] Instead, the president favored peanut butter and honey sandwiches, BLTs, and cheeseburgers.[12] The twin Bush girls both required that the calories in each meal be given to them.[12] After the September 11 attacks in 2001, Scheib's cooking duties were largely restricted to the First Family, as all social engagements at the White House were curtailed for nearly a year.[12] President Bush affectionately called Scheib "Cookie".[9]
Tension between the Bushes and Scheib was soon apparent. An anonymous White House staffer later claimed that Scheib kept serving the Bushes scallops, even though they disliked them. Scheib angrily denied the assertion.[1] The differences became too great, and Scheib was fired by the Bushes in February 2005.[15] He was succeeded in August 2005 by Cristeta Comerford, a White House sous-chef whom Scheib had hired in 1995.[16]
During both the Clinton and Bush administrations, Scheib usually served three meals a day to the First Family.[12] He often worked long hours each day, and as many as six days a week.[4] The number of expected guests at both informal and formal dining occasions fluctuated greatly, and pleasing both First Families took a great deal of attention and care.[4] Both the Bushes and Clintons loved enchiladas, fresh fruit, salads, and sorbets, and both presidents asked for junk food when their wives were not present.[12] During his tenure at the White House, Scheib cooked for a large number of heads of state and VIPs, including Akihito, Emperor of Japan; Tony Blair, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; Diana, Princess of Wales; Jacques Chirac, President of France; Nelson Mandela, the President of South Africa; and Boris Yeltsin, the first President of Russia.[1]
Post-White House
In 2007, Scheib authored (with Andrew Friedman) a memoir, The White House Chef: Eleven Years, Two Presidents, One Kitchen.[5] He subsequently formed a corporation, The American Chef, which provided his services as a consultant and lecturer, and assisted in planning, preparing, and presenting Scheib-cooked meals for large groups. Between 2007 and 2015, he traveled to nearly every U.S. state and to 154 countries.[2][5]
Scheib appeared on the television series Iron Chef America, which aired on the Food Network, in 2006.[17]
Death
Scheib went hiking in Taos, New Mexico, and went missing on June 13, 2015.[18] He was found dead on June 21, 2015.[19]
An autopsy revealed that Scheib died from drowning on or about June 13.[20] A precise date of death was not determined, as the cold water temperature of the ravine preserved his body in a manner that made it impossible to determine when exactly he had died. The area where he was hiking is prone to flash floods, and thunderstorms had struck the area the day he went missing.[20][21][a]
Personal life
Scheib met his first wife, Jean Prince, at the Capital Hilton, where she was working as a chef.[4] The couple had two sons, Walter S. Scheib IV (born in 1988) and James Prince (born in 1991).[4] Their marriage ended in divorce.[1]
Scheib then married Yvonne Swartz; their marriage also ended in divorce.[1]

Naruhito, Chrysanthemum Throne
He is Japan's 126th emperor, and, according to tradition, traces his lineage directly to Jimmu, the legendary first emperor of Japan. He ascended the throne upon the abdication of his father, Akihito. His elevation to the throne marked the dawn of the Reiwa period.
Emperor Jimmu was the first legendary emperor of Japan according to the Nihon Shoki and Kojiki. His accession is traditionally dated as 660 BC. In Japanese mythology, he was a descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu, through her grandson Ninigi, as well as a descendant of the storm god Susanoo.
The name "chrysanthemum" is derived from the Ancient Greek: ??????chrysos(gold) and Ancient Greek: ??????? anthemon (flower)

Why the pro-Trump QAnon movement is finding followers in Japan
After emerging among conspiracy theorists in the US, the far-right QAnon movement is expanding to include a small but dedicated band of adherents in Japan. Julian Ryall reports from Tokyo.
Undeterred by the mayhem at the Capitol in Washington and the near-universal condemnation of Donald Trump's failures in the dying days of his presidency, the small but committed Japanese chapter of the far-right QAnon movement is standing by its man.
It is also advancing some absurd, albeit uniquely Japanese theories: The imperial family was replaced by "fakes" during the mid-1800s; Emperor Hirohito was British, an agent for the CIA, and owned the patent for the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the closing days of World War II.
The group clearly has an ax to grind with its monarchy, as members are also convinced that the nearly 20,000 people who died in the tsunami triggered by an earthquake off northeast Japan in March 2011 were victims of the "artificial tsunami terrorism" overseen by Hirohito's son Emperor Akihito, who abdicated in April 2019.
A past tainted by cultish beliefs
A member of the group who goes by the name Eri claims there are at least 500 QAnon followers across Japan and a further 100 people are part of the QArmy Japan Flynn - an allied group that idolizes Michael Flynn. The former national security advisor to Trump had to step down after just 24 days for lying over his links to Russia before the 2016 presidential election.
As well as being convinced that Trump legitimately won the 2020 election and has been cheated out of a second term as president, QAnon Japan adherents believe that Japanese politics is "dominated by foreigners" who have sold off the nation's wealth to "global capitalists" through privatization. They also believe that ethnic Koreans are running the government.
Similarly, they believe that "deep state" is implementing a "global human population reduction plan" that has previously relied on war, illness and infertility to control population numbers.
Jun Okumura, an analyst at the Meiji Institute for Global Affairs, says there are some clear parallels with the emergence of QAnon and another cult that briefly shook Japan.
"I look at these people and while they are present and visible in every society, I see this group as being quite similar to the Aum Shinrikyo cult back in the early 1990s," he told DW, referring to the violent quasi-religious organization that released sarin gas on the Tokyo subway system in March 1995, killing 12 people.
"It appears that a small minority of people have their minds wired to accept these outlandish theories in spite of all the evidence and knowledge that is put directly in front of them," Okumura said. "There is even the argument that it is human nature to want to believe that a person is privy to secret information or knowledge that no-one else has."
Conspiracy theories - coronavirus, global warming, monarchs
QAnon Japan followers are convinced that global warming is a lie and that the planet's climate is being artificially manipulated, while the coronavirus pandemic that started in the Chinese city of Wuhan is linked to the introduction of 5G mobile networks "and may function as a controllable electromagnetic weapon," Eri told DW.
Stephen Nagy, an associate professor of international relations at Tokyo's International Christian University, points out that social media has made the message of conspiracy theorists far easier to disseminate.
"Anti-vaxxers, anti-maskers, those that think the coronavirus was a biological weapon deliberately manufactured in a Chinese laboratory and brought into Japan by North Korean agents - where does it all come from and why do some people fall for these tales?" he asked.
"I remember similar stories in years gone by, but they never gained any real traction then. But now we live in an era where social media amplifies and expands every thought and idea," Nagy told DW.
"And with people now locked down because of the coronavirus, many are going online and falling down the rabbit hole offered by QAnon and others with similar agendas," he added.
In a country that broadly reveres its monarchy, QAnon's opinions on the imperial family are perhaps most surprising.
Eri insists that the members of the real imperial family were "replaced by fakes" during the Meiji era and "Emperor Hirohito had British nationality and is not a pure Japanese," adding that Emperor Hirohito, who was Japan's emperor from 1926 until his death in 1989, was a CIA agent.

Just ran across this…kinda cool!
"A viola made in 1938 by Ivan W. Allison of Charleston, West Virginia, was amongst the gifts presented by President Trump yesterday to the new Emperor of Japan, who happens to be a keen viola player.
The instrument was sold to the US State Department by a violin shop in Little Rock, Arkansas, and presented to the Emperor in a custom case, alongside a photo of U.S. composer Aaron Copland.
In a message on his Facebook wall, Joe Joyner, owner of the Little Rock Violin Shop, said, 'On April 30th I heard a news story that Japan's Emperor Akihito was stepping down and that his son, Naruhito, would be taking his place. 24 hours later I received a call from the U.S. State Department seeking an American made viola to give as a diplomatic gift'."

Footage of Kawasaki knife attack recorded by school bus dashcam
YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) – Footage of a recent mass stabbing attack in Kawasaki that left a schoolgirl and a man dead and more than a dozen others injured has been recovered from a school bus dashcam, police said Thursday.
The video shows the assailant, Ryuichi Iwasaki, 51, approaching a group of Caritas Elementary School students from behind as they waited for their school bus. It also captured the attack and its aftermath, the police said.
Iwasaki, who later died of self-inflicted wounds to his neck, wielded two 30-centimeter-long knives in the assault that occurred Tuesday in the city near Tokyo.
He wore gloves on his hands in an apparent attempt to prevent the knives from slipping.
Police found two smaller knives in a backpack left at the scene and four empty knife boxes at his home in Kawasaki on Wednesday, they said.
Hanako Kuribayashi, an 11-year-old student, and Foreign Ministry official Satoshi Oyama, the 39-year-old father of an unharmed Caritas Elementary School pupil, were killed in the knife attack around 7:40 a.m. Tuesday.
Seventeen others, mostly children but also a woman who is the mother of a Caritas Elementary School student, were also injured in the incident.
The police said Kuribayashi was stabbed in the neck and Oyama sustained a deep stab wound that pierced his heart. Other victims also sustained upper-body wounds.
Oyama was a Burmese expert who served as an interpreter for former Emperor Akihito and former Empress Michiko when they met with then Myanmar President Thein Sein in 2013 and 2015.
The imperial couple sent their condolences to Oyama's family through the Foreign Ministry, and the Imperial Household Agency said the two, who retired last month, are deeply saddened by the incident.
Caritas Elementary School remains closed in the wake of the attack, while a girls' junior and senior high school run by the same operator reopened Thursday after keeping its gates shut the day before.
Police officers and school officials stood watch as children arrived at the reopened school, many escorted by their parents.
National Police Agency Commissioner General Shunichi Kuryu called the incident "extremely malicious" in a press conference Thursday and said the police as well as government ministries and agencies concerned aim to beef up safety measures for children.
"We will work with municipalities, schools and parents to reinspect the places in which children gather on their way to and from schools," he said, adding police will increase patrols.

Naruhito was born on 23 February 1960 at 4:15 pm in the Imperial Household Agency Hospital in Tokyo Imperial Palace.[4] As a prince, he later quipped, "I was born in a barn inside the moat".[5] His mother is a convert to Shinto from Roman Catholicism. Before Naruhito's birth, the announcement of the then Crown Prince Akihito's engagement and marriage to Michiko Sh?da (later Empress Michiko) had drawn opposition from traditionalist groups, because Michiko came from a Roman Catholic family.[6] Although she was never baptized, she was educated in Catholic schools and seemed to share the faith of her parents.
In August 1974, when the prince was 14, he was sent to Melbourne, Australia, for a homestay. Naruhito's father, then the Crown Prince Akihito, had had a positive experience there on a trip the year before, and encouraged his son to go as well.[10] He stayed with the family of businessman Colin Harper.[11] He got along with his host brothers, riding around Point Lonsdale, playing the violin and tennis, and climbing Uluru together.[12] Once he even played the violin for dignitaries at a state dinner at Government House hosted by Governor-General Sir John Kerr.

Trump presses Japan over trade gap, expects 'good things' from North Korea
TOKYO (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump pressed Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday to even out a trade imbalance with the United States and expressed confidence, despite Japanese wariness, that "good things" would come from North Korea. Trump is on a four-day state visit to Japan meant to showcase the alliance between the two nations, but which has also been shadowed by trade tensions. Trump explicitly linked trade and security, a connection that disturbs Tokyo, whose alliance with Washington stands at the core of its defense policies.
"It's all a balance sheet thing," he said. "When I talk about a security threat, I talk about a balance sheet. "In order to have $716 billion dollars a year in military expenditures, you have to have a lot of money coming in," he said, adding that Japan had bought "tremendous amounts" of U.S. military gear. On Sunday, Trump tweeted that he expected big moves on trade would wait until after Japan's upper house election in July.
"Trade-wise, I think we'll be announcing some things, probably in August, that will be very good for both countries," Trump said on Monday. "We'll get the balance of trade, I think, straightened out rapidly." Abe, who has developed close personal ties with Trump since the U.S. leader came to office, stressed the closeness of ties. "I am determined to demonstrate at home and abroad the very strong bond" he said of the alliance in Japan's new Reiwa era, which began on May 1 when Emperor Naruhito inherited the throne.
Earlier, Trump was greeted by Naruhito and his Harvard-educated wife at the imperial palace in Tokyo in a formal welcome ceremony broadcast live on national television. He became the first foreign dignitary to be received by the monarch since the latter inherited the throne after his father, Akihito, stepped down in the first abdication by a Japanese emperor in two centuries. Trump gave a slight bow and he and First Lady Melania Trump shook hands with the imperial pair before entering the palace, to be met by Abe and his wife, Akie, among others. The president and emperor and their wives returned outside to walk a red carpet and stand under a hot sun while a military band played the national anthems of both countries.
RED CARPET, POLICY DIFFERENCES Trump then walked the red carpet again, waving at assembled school children and inspecting Japanese troops before a military band played a formal salute as he stood solemnly on a raised platform. Trump has made clear he was pleased to have the honor of the first reception with the emperor, who is hosting a lavish state dinner for the U.S. leader and his wife on Monday. The two leaders have put on a show of friendship but have policy disagreements over trade and North Korea. Trump has threatened to target Japanese automakers with high tariffs in his effort to cut the U.S. trade surplus and get a two-way trade pact with Tokyo.
Trump has also spearheaded an expensive trade dispute with China. That trade war between the world's two largest economies has hurt markets worldwide and confounded U.S. allies, including Japan and the European Union. Such allies share U.S. concerns about Chinese practices but object to Trump's hardball tactics. Abe and Trump are also set to discuss North Korea and Iran. "I personally think that lots of good things will come with North Korea. I feel that. I may be right, I may be wrong, but I feel that," Trump said on Monday.
On Sunday, Trump had said he was not worried about a recent missile launch by North Korea. That put him at odds with his own national security adviser, John Bolton, who said on Saturday Pyongyang's recent short-range missile tests violated United Nations Security Council resolutions. Japan shares Bolton's view. Abe is considering a trip to Iran next month, domestic media said, to try to soothe rising tension between Tehran and Washington. Trump said Abe had spoken to him on the subject. "We'll see what happens," Trump said. "But I know for a fact that the prime minister is very close with the leadership of Iran, and we'll see what happens." Also on Monday, Trump will meet families of Japanese citizens abducted by Pyongyang decades ago.

POTUS hints he won't push Japan for trade deal before summer election
TOKYO (Kyodo) – U.S. President Donald Trump indicated Sunday he will not push Japan for a bilateral trade agreement before a House of Councillors election in the summer.
"Much will wait until after their July elections," Trump said in a Twitter post after playing golf with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the second day of his four-day state visit to Japan. Later Sunday, the leaders watched a sumo tournament with their wives.
"Great progress being made in our Trade Negotiations with Japan. Agriculture and beef heavily in play," Trump wrote, a sign that he will not push Abe for a swift conclusion of the ongoing bilateral trade talks when they hold an official meeting Monday.
Trump apparently took into account Abe's concern about being forced to make concessions related to the agricultural sector as the prime minister leads his Liberal Democratic Party into the upper house election, with a simultaneous election for the House of Representatives also a possibility.
Underscoring the president's tweet, John Roberts, chief White House correspondent for Fox News, quoted Trump as telling him over the phone that he "will wait until after the July elections in the House of Councillors…before really pushing for a deal."
Speaking to reporters after playing 16 holes with Trump and veteran Japanese professional golfer Isao Aoki, Abe said, "I think I had a frank exchange of views (with Trump) in a very relaxed atmosphere," without providing details.
The two leaders had breakfast and lunch together at Mobara Country Club in Chiba Prefecture, and their lunch included double cheeseburgers with U.S. beef, according to Japanese officials.
It was their fifth round of golf together since Trump took office in 2017. The most recent time they played was during Abe's trip to Washington in late April.
Abe, dressed in a blue blazer and white pants, welcomed Trump, wearing a red pullover and carrying a red hat in his hand, who arrived at the golf course on his Marine One helicopter.
Trump's tweet came a day after he said he wants to make bilateral trade "a little bit more fair," a sign of his frustration about the hefty and chronic U.S. trade deficit with Japan.
Speaking at a meeting with Japanese business leaders, Trump said he wants to address the imbalance, remove barriers to U.S. exports and ensure fairness and reciprocity, while foreshadowing several announcements including "some very big ones over the next few months."
While maintaining hefty tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Japan and other U.S. trading partners, Trump has also threatened Tokyo and other major car exporters with a potential 25 percent automobile levy in a bid to pressure them into making concessions.
Aside from bilateral trade, Abe and Trump, in their formal talks Monday, are expected to affirm coordination over North Korea.
But in a contrast with U.S. national security adviser John Bolton, Trump on Sunday played down the significance of North Korean short-range ballistic missile tests earlier this month.
"North Korea fired off some small weapons, which disturbed some of my people, and others, but not me," Trump tweeted, a day after Bolton said Pyongyang's recent missile launches were in violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution – a view shared by Japan.
Trump said he has confidence in North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The two have met twice, the first time in Singapore last June and the second in Hanoi in February.
On the final day of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan, Trump presented the "President's Cup," a huge American-made trophy, to Asanoyama, a rank-and-file wrestler who clinched his first title Saturday.
On Monday, Trump and first lady Melania, the first state guests of Japan's new Reiwa imperial era, will have an audience with new Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako.
Trump will be the first foreign leader to meet with the emperor, who ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne on May 1 after former Emperor Akihito abdicated the previous day, the first Japanese monarch to stand down in about 200 years.

POTUS to start state visit to Japan for audience with new emperor
TOKYO (Kyodo) – U.S. President Donald Trump is set to start a four-day state visit to Japan on Saturday, a historic event that will make him the first foreign leader to meet with new Emperor Naruhito.
Trump, flanked by first lady Melania, will have an audience Monday with the emperor and Empress Masako. Trump's itinerary also includes a bilateral meeting, golf outing, visit to a grand sumo tournament and informal dinner with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Tweeting from Air Force One en route to Japan on Friday, Trump said he is "looking forward to honoring, on behalf of the United States, His Majesty, the Emperor of Japan," and that he will discuss trade and regional security with Abe, whom he called "my friend."
In a meeting Friday with Trump's national security adviser John Bolton in Tokyo, Abe said he welcomes Trump's "historic" visit as the first state guest of Japan's new imperial era of Reiwa and expressed hope that it will further strengthen the bilateral alliance.
Speaking at the White House on Thursday, Trump expressed excitement about traveling to Japan. "With all the countries of the world, I'm the guest of honor at the biggest event that they've had in over 200 years," he said.
Emperor Naruhito ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne on May 1 after former Emperor Akihito abdicated the previous day, the first Japanese monarch to stand down in about 200 years.
In a meeting on Monday, Abe and Trump are expected to discuss bilateral trade and North Korea policy, with Trump pushing Japan to cut its trade surplus with the United States.
Similarly, American farmers have grown concerned about their reduced market share in Japan following the recent enforcement of an 11-nation Pacific free trade agreement including Japan and farming nations such as Australia and New Zealand.
The leaders are also likely to seek a good balance between pressuring North Korea and exploring opportunities for engagement with leader Kim Jong Un in a bid to address the nuclear, missile and abduction issues.
Following the talks with Abe, Trump will meet with the relatives of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s. The president raised the abduction issue during the first-ever U.S.-North Korea summit last June in Singapore and also in his second meeting with Kim in February in Hanoi.
On Tuesday, Abe and Trump will board the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force helicopter carrier Kaga docked at an MSDF base in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo, in another demonstration of the firmness of the Japan-U.S. alliance.
Trump will address troops during a visit to the U.S. Yokosuka Naval Base before wrapping up the trip.

Resurgent Japanese Nationalism Is a Beautiful Thing, Admired
The Japanese Emperor Akihito has officially abdicated his throne as of today, I believe midnight tonight. As such he is the first Japanese emperor to abdicate in 200 years. His 30 year reign will be replaced by his son, Prince Naruhito, who will ascend the Chrysanthemum Throne on Wednesday ushering in a new era called Reiwa, which means the era of 'beautiful harmony.'
And so, needless to say all day today the current emperor Akihito is performing a number of rituals, some public but most private, that involve properly abdicating the throne, announcing the abdication to the Shinto gods who guard and ultimately govern Japan in the traditionalist Japanese worldview.
This really marks the end of an era. This emperor was the son of Hirohito, the emperor at the center of World War II in the pacific, and he was seen as a symbol of Japan's re-birth; he was the first in the royal family to marry a commoner, a merchant's daughter, quite wealthy of course, but not of royal blood. The marriage was seen as a gesture of brining the imperial family closer to the wider Japanese population, sort of descending from their pervious divine position to now being one of the people. In fact, my mother-in-law attended the same school as the empress, she was just a year or so behind her, and was actually one of her acquaintances. So that is kind of a couple second or third degree of separation for me there.
What really intrigued me in all of this is the role of the Japanese Emperor in a resurgent nationalist conservativism that is just been sweeping Japan's governing elite. Japan is interesting because there really is a revitalized nationalism and rightwing conservatism in Japan, but not a populism, so much. It is not what we are seeing here in the West where our governing elites are all a bunch of globalist aristocrats who govern for their own advantage and not the advantage of the citizens of a nation, and have provoked a massive backlash among populations who are reasserting their nation's customs, culture, and traditions as mechanisms of resistance against globalization and its secular aristocracy.
That is not what is going on in Japan.
Instead, in Japan, the ruling class is currently experiencing what is really nothing short of an astounding renaissance or revitalization of conservative nationalist rightwing sentiments that is sort of trickling down to the wider population. Japan IS indeed one of the nations going through a major nationalist surge, but it is not so much from the bottom up, from the people to the ballot box, as it were. It is more top down starting from the nation's leaders to the people.

Japanese Workers Are Freaking Out About Getting Extra Vacation Time
Although an extra-long vacation may sound like a great thing to many people, a lot of Japanese workers are apparently unhappy with receiving such a break.
Japan's parliament has approved a 10-day long holiday-dubbed the Golden Week-to mark the abdication of the country's Emperor Akihito. However, a survey conducted by the country's Asahi Shimbun newspaper revealed that 45 percent of respondents "felt unhappy" about the long break, British news site The Independent reported Wednesday. Only 35 percent said they "felt happy" about the government's decision.
The Japan Times also reported that the travel site Expedia had conducted its own survey, revealing that 46 percent were "not happy" about the Golden Week. Many of those respondents cited having to deal with extra chores and taking care of children as the reason.
"With after-school care services closed, there'll be no place to leave my children," Mutsumi Goda, a 40-year-old single parent, complained to The Japan Times.
Others are simply unsure what they should do with all the extra free time.
"To be honest, I don't know how to spend the time when we are suddenly given 10 days of holidays. If you want to go traveling, it's going to be crowded everywhere and tour costs have surged." Seishu Sato, a 31-year-old finance worker, complained to Agence France-Press (AFP). "I might end up staying at my parents' place."
A disgruntled parent working in the service sector, which would continue to operate, pointed out on social media that it would be difficult to find childcare. "For parents in the service sector, the 10 days of holiday is a headache. After-school care, nurseries-everything is closed," the individual wrote on social media, according to AFP.
Takeru Jo, a 46-year-old pizzeria worker, similarly lamented that he would be unable to take days off in his line of work. "On the contrary, we'll be super-busy," he pointed out.

Japanese Emperor Akihito abdicates throne after 30-year reign
Emperor Akihito of Japan formally stepped down Tuesday, the first abdication for 200 years in the world's oldest monarchy, as his son Naruhito prepared to take the Chrysanthemum Throne and usher in a new imperial era.
In the "Room of Pine" in Tokyo's Imperial Palace, the popular 85-year-old performed the abdication ritual in the presence of the imperial regalia – an ancient sword and sacred jewel that are considered to legitimise an emperor.
In his final speech, Akihito offered his "deepest heartfelt gratitude to the people of Japan" and said he would "pray for the peace and happiness of all the people in Japan and around the world."
Despite near-constant rain in Tokyo, several hundred wellwishers congregated outside the Palace during the historic ceremony attended by around 300 people, including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and around a dozen members of the royal family.

Asian shares fall as China manufacturing data disappoints
SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Shares in Asia fell on Tuesday as readings on China's manufacturing activity failed to meet expectations, underscoring weakness in the world's second-largest economy despite Beijing's attempts to spur growth.
Both official and private business surveys pointed to slower Chinese factory growth this month, dashing hopes for a steady reading or even a faster expansion. Data also showed a slower expansion in its services sector, adding to economic uncertainty.
The dollar-denominated MSCI index of Chinese shares dropped 0.8 percent. But Chinese blue chips in Shanghai and Shenzhen kept losses in check, losing less than 0.1 percent as investors maintained hopes for further measures to prop up the economy.
The weak manufacturing numbers suggest "stimulus is there to stay," said Frances Cheung, head of macro strategy for Asia at Westpac. Upbeat data for March had prompted some analysts to scale back expectations of additional support measures.
MSCI's broadest gauge of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was off 0.7 percent. Korean shares led losses for the region, falling 1.3 percent.
Australian equities fell 0.6 percent.
Japan's financial markets remain closed for a national holiday as Japanese Emperor Akihito prepares to abdicate on Tuesday in favor of his elder son, Crown Prince Naruhito.
Even before the China data, Asian investors had shrugged off cautious gains on Wall Street overnight that had lifted the S&P 500 index to an intraday record high of 2,949.52. The index finished up 0.11 percent at a record closing high of 2,943.03.[.N]
The Nasdaq gained 0.19 percent to 8,161.85, also a record closing high, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average eked out a 0.04 percent gain to 26,554.39.
The quiet start to the week in global equity markets comes ahead of a two-day meeting of the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee. The committee is set to release its latest statement at 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT) on Wednesday.
The Fed is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged, as it seeks to balance robust economic growth against low inflation.
In the latest slew of data sending mixed signals to the Fed, U.S. consumer spending rose at the fastest pace in more than 9-1/2 years in March, but core personal consumption expenditures (PCE), the bank's favored inflation measure, logged its smallest annual rise in 14 months.
"We expect the dovish tone from central banks to continue for the foreseeable future. Given evidence of a recovery in growth, this is very positive for risk assets," analysts at ANZ said in a morning note.
The yield on benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury notes retreated to 2.527 percent as of 2330 GMT Tuesday after rising to a close of 2.536 percent Tuesday on the strong consumer spending data.
The two-year yield, watched as a gauge of expectations of rate rises, was at 2.2942 percent in late New York trades, off from a U.S. close Tuesday of 2.298 percent.
In the currency market, the dollar lost 0.05 percent against the yen to 111.55, and the euro was barely changed at $1.1184.
The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of six major rivals, was also unchanged, holding at 97.852.
While other currencies remained stable, the dollar jumped 0.4 percent against the Korean won, to 1,163.33.
"The won is both risk- and trade-sensitive, and as such it is suffering," said Cheung at Westpac.
"Upward pressure on USD/Asia is likely to stay before we see some economic improvement (in China)," she added.

Japanese Emperor Akihito to abdicate after three decades on throne
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Emperor Akihito reported his abdication to a Shinto sun goddess in a ritual at the Imperial Palace on Tuesday, starting a day of ceremonies to end a three decade reign in which he sought to ease painful memories of World War Two and bring the monarchy closer to people.
Akihito, 85, was the first Japanese monarch to take the throne under a post-war constitution that defines the emperor as a symbol of the people without political power. His abdication is the first in two centuries. His father, Hirohito, in whose name Japanese troops fought World War Two, was considered a living deity until after Japan's defeat in 1945, when he renounced his divinity. Akihito, together with Empress Michiko, his wife of 60 years and the first commoner to marry an imperial heir, carved out an active role as a symbol of reconciliation, peace and democracy.
"I think the emperor is loved by the people. His image is one of encouraging the people, such as after disasters, and being close to the people," Morio Miyamoto, 48, said as he waited near a train station in western Tokyo. "I hope the next emperor will, like the Heisei emperor, be close to the people in the same way," he said. Akihito, who has had treatment for prostate cancer and heart surgery, said in a televised address in 2016 that he feared his age would make it hard for him to carry out his duties fully.
REPORT TO THE SUN GODDESS Akihito reported his abdication in a ritual held in a sanctuary inside the palace grounds honoring the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami, from whom mythology says the imperial line is descended. He was to do the same at two other sanctuaries honoring departed emperors and Shinto gods. Video aired on NHK public TV showed Akihito, wearing a dark orange traditional robe and black headress, walking slowly into the first sanctuary as a courtier in a white robe walked behind holding the train and another carried a sword. Crown Prince Naruhito would then conduct a similar ceremony, NHK said. Ahead of the ceremonies, Japanese and foreign tourists gathered near the palace after early morning rains had stopped.
The abdication will be publicly marked by a brief and relatively simple ceremony in the Imperial Palace's prestigious Matsu no ma, or Hall of Pine. About 300 people will attend and it will be broadcast live on television. Attendees at the afternoon abdication ceremony will include Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Empress Michiko, Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako, as well as the heads of both houses of parliament and Supreme Court justices. Imperial chamberlains will carry state and privy seals into the room along with two of Japan's "Three Sacred Treasures" - a sword and a jewel - which together with a mirror are symbols of the throne. Security beefed up in Tokyo as emperor prepares to abdicate
TOKYO (Reuters) - Divers scoured moats around the Imperial Palace and police dogs sniffed in bushes on Monday as authorities ramped up security for the start of Japan's new "Reiwa" imperial era. The new era begins on Wednesday when Crown Prince Naruhito ascends the Chrysanthemum Throne a day after the abdication of his father, Emperor Akihito, brings to an end the 31-year Heisei era.
Police stepped up security at the Imperial Palace, a 115 hectare (284 acre) site that is home to the emperor and empress in the heart of Tokyo. Officers poked at bushes with steel sticks to check for hidden objects, while dogs sniffed nearby. Divers checked the murky water of a dozen moats that surround the palace. Public access to the plaza in front of the palace will be restricted during the abdication and ascension ceremonies.
Security will be tight at Naruhito's residence in the Akasaka royal estate, a police official said. "We will be enhancing security to prevent illegal behavior, including terrorism acts, from happening near the palace and the Akasaka Imperial property as well as streets accessing them," said the official who declined to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to media. Kyodo News said several thousand police officers will provide security for the ceremonies and a public appearance by the new emperor on Thursday when huge crowds of well-wishers are expected. "I feel like there are more police officers today. I see way more people than usual," said Mariko Hiratsuka, 36, who jogs around the palace once a week with a friend. Police on Monday declined to comment on media reports that two knives were found on the classroom desk of Prince Hisahito, the 12-year-old grandson of Emperor Akihito. Security camera footage showed a man disguised as a construction worker enter the grounds of the junior high school in Tokyo, Kyodo News said, citing police.

Trump calls for removal of Japanese tariffs on US farm products
WASHINGTON (Kyodo) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday called for the removal of Japan's "very massive" tariffs on American agricultural products, as he and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed to accelerate new negotiations for a bilateral trade pact.
In a show of eagerness to bring a swift conclusion to the talks, Trump said at a White House meeting with Abe that the governments may strike a deal by the time he travels to Japan in late May for a meeting with the country's new emperor.
"I think it can go fairly quickly. Maybe by the time I'm over there. Maybe we sign it over there," Trump told the meeting, part of which was open to the media. "But it's moving along very nicely, and we'll see what happens."
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Abe said Trump assured him that he will fully cooperate in arranging a first summit between Abe and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as part of efforts to resolve Pyongyang's abduction of Japanese nationals in the 1970s and 1980s.
Abe and Trump affirmed close coordination bilaterally, and trilaterally with South Korea, in achieving the fully verified denuclearization of North Korea, while vowing to maintain U.N. sanctions on Pyongyang, according to senior Japanese and U.S. officials.
With the Trump administration regarding a bilateral deal as a means to reducing the hefty U.S. trade deficit with Japan, Abe said they agreed to make any pact a "win-win" for both countries.
"We agreed to accelerate negotiations between Japanese economic revitalization minister Toshimitsu Motegi and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer so as to produce a mutually beneficial outcome for both countries," he said.
Trump accused Japan of imposing "very massive" tariffs on U.S. farm products. "We want to get rid of those tariffs," he said at the outset of the meeting.
With Trump seeking re-election in the 2020 presidential race, he appears poised to seal trade deals that would put the interests of American businesses, farmers and ranchers first.
He has repeatedly condemned Japan, China and other countries for posting chronic trade surpluses with the United States.
But Motegi, speaking after the meeting, said Trump did not demand Japan cut tariffs on American farm products beyond levels it has agreed in other trade pacts, such as a revised Trans-Pacific Partnership and a free-trade agreement with the European Union.
The administration's desire for increased access to the Japanese market has grown as a revised TPP – an 11-member FTA including Japan and farming nations such as Australia and Canada – and the Japan-EU FTA have put American farmers and ranchers at a disadvantage.
Motegi also said Trump did not push Japan to set quotas to limit automobile exports or to include a provision preventing currency devaluations.
Abe briefed Trump on Japan's efforts to balance bilateral trade, such as increased purchases of defense equipment and energy from the United States, as well as $23 billion of Japanese investment that led to the creation of some 40,000 jobs there since Trump took office in January 2017, according to a senior Japanese official.
The meeting came after Motegi and Lighthizer launched trade negotiations last week. They started talks to cut tariffs on agricultural and industrial goods, including automobiles.
They have also agreed to begin talks on digital trade, an area including e-commerce, data transfers and music distribution services, at an appropriate time.
Referring to a May 25-28 trip to Japan by Trump and first lady Melania Trump, Abe said it is "a great pleasure and honor" for the country to welcome them as the first state guests in its new Reiwa era, starting next Wednesday.
Crown Prince Naruhito is set to ascend to the throne that day, following the abdication of his father, Emperor Akihito, on Tuesday.

A re-post from a friend that shows who our friends are:
Brexit.
The Japanese Prime Minister yesterday TOLD the EU leadership that the EU must ensure that there is a Brexit deal agreed. Failure to do so could lead to japanese investment in the European market being in jeapordy.
Shinzo Abe also hinted that the USA will also not look to kindly upon the EU for hindering any UK/US trade deal..reminding the EU that their 'protectionist policies' are a threat to global trade.
Note: The EU is urgently seeking a Trade Deal with the USA, but not willing to do anything about germany's illegal state subsidies to their Steel Industry and France's subsidies to Airbus.
Meanwhile….
One of the six MEP's on the European parliament's Brexit steering committee…they decide what the EU parliaments position will be….has started a 'war of words' over the Brexit party at the EU elections.
The Belgium MEP and close ally of Guy Verhofstadt stated
- " Britains empire is dead and buried. The EU are the real power now, so get used to it."
- " Even if the UK Brexit party win all the EU MEP seats in parliament, it makes no difference. We will not allow them to disrupt our plans, they will not be allowed to be heard, they are irrelevent."
Opinion.
When the US and Japan both warn the EU, it has consequences if the EU doesn't comply.
As for the Belgium MEP, it just emphasises that there is no democrarcy inside the EU parliament…. when just six MEP's, selected by unelected EU Officials, out of 750 decide how the EU Parliament must and will vote!

Japan using emperor, first lady's birthday to court Trump
TOKYO >> Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is scheduling a rushed visit to Washington to meet with President Donald Trump and celebrate first lady Melania Trump's birthday, and then is inviting him to be first foreign leader to meet Japan's new emperor, the two countries announced today.
Without close friends in Asia, Abe is seen as using every opportunity, even the emperor's accession, to court Trump.
Tokyo and Washington said today that Trump and the first lady will make a state visit to Japan at the end of May, just weeks after Crown Prince Naruhito ascends Japan's Chrysanthemum throne. Naruhito's 85-year-old father, Emperor Akihito, is ending his three-decade reign on April 30 by abdicating.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said receiving Trump as the first state guest of the new imperial era would "symbolize the unshakable bond of the Japan-U.S. alliance."
Japanese officials are also arranging for Trump to watch the final day of a sumo wrestling tournament on May 26 so he can present a trophy to the winner. Trump may also travel to a Japanese naval base in Yokosuka west of Tokyo to see a destroyer that has been refitted as Japan's first postwar aircraft carrier, Japanese officials and media reports said.
Abe, experts say, is taking every opportunity to court Trump as Japan tries to stay out of the U.S. leader's crosshairs, unlike some other world leaders who have upset him on trade and other issues.
"I'm not sure what other choices this administration, or any Japanese administration, has except to try to build the best relationship possible with Washington through face-to-face interaction," said Stephen Nagy, a politics and international studies professor at International Christian University in Tokyo. "I think Mr. Trump being the first to meet the emperor is a good example of that."
Relations between Japan and two of its closest neighbors, South Korea and China, remain strained over their war history and territorial disputes.
In February, Trump said Abe had nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to denuclearize North Korea. Abe did not deny the claim, triggering criticism from opposition lawmakers that his apparent effort to please Trump was embarrassing.
Abe has managed to largely stay on good terms with Trump by assiduously avoiding criticism of the U.S. leader. "You never hear criticisms out of Japan ... that has been very characteristic of the Abe administration," Nagy said. "I think he has done well because he hasn't insulted Mr. Trump to cause problems."
Abe was also the first foreign leader to meet Trump after his election in November 2016, not even waiting until he officially took office as is normal diplomatic practice, and gave him a special golf driver.
Hiro Aida, professor of global studies at Aoyama Gakuin University and an expert on Japan-U.S. relations, said Abe is jumping at the opportunity of the emperor's succession after his ties with Trump were seen to be weakening as the U.S. leader came down hard on trade issues, demanding that Japan do more to reduce the countries' trade imbalance.
"Inviting Trump in May to meet the new emperor would be a perfect chance for Abe to show how much he cares about Trump, while also showing their relationship off to the world," Aida said.
Abe may be also demonstrating his political power over Naruhito by sending the message that he can decide whom the emperor meets. Aida, however, said the choice of Trump amid continuing investigations into his administration's ties with Russia may hurt Naruhito's image.
Abe will travel to Washington on April 26-27, just ahead of the busy imperial succession. He and Trump are also expected to meet for a third month in a row in June when Japan hosts the Group of 20 summit in Osaka, western Japan, where the economy and trade will be the main issues.
The White House said today that Abe and Trump will discuss North Korean nuclear disarmament, trade and other issues during this month's visit. After talks at the White House, Abe and his wife Akie are to have an informal dinner with Trump and Melania to celebrate the first lady's 49th birthday. The next day, the two leaders are expected to play golf in the outskirts of Washington, following several previous rounds they have shared in each country.

Reiwa: Japan reveals name of new era ahead of Emperor's abdication
BY TOMOHIRO OSAKI
APR 1, 2019
"In a much-awaited moment that heralded a new chapter in Japan's history, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga announced Monday that the new Imperial era will be named Reiwa, taking one of the final steps toward initiating the nation's first imperial succession in three decades…
The first character represents "good fortune," while the second can be translated as "peace" or "harmony."
This was the first time that the characters chosen were taken from Japanese classical literature. Prior era names had used kanji from Chinese literature…
The new era will start on May 1, when Crown Prince Naruhito ascends to the Chrysanthemum Throne following the abdication of his father, Emperor Akihito"

Abe eyes U.S. trip in late April for talks with Trump on trade: sources
WASHINGTON - Prime Minister Shinzo Abe plans to visit the United States in late April for talks with President Donald Trump, sources familiar with bilateral relations said Wednesday.
In the envisioned April 26-27 trip, Abe and Trump are likely to discuss trade negotiations the two governments may start the same month, as well as a planned visit by Trump to Japan in late May, the sources said.
But the timing of Abe's trip could change, given the possibility that Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping may hold a summit meeting in late April to reach a trade deal.
In the planned talks, Abe and Trump are also expected to discuss how best to deal with North Korea in the wake of the collapse of a second summit between Trump and the North's leader Kim Jong Un in late February in Vietnam.
Abe and Trump are expected to affirm that the international community will coordinate in maintaining sanctions on Pyongyang until it achieves complete denuclearization.
On bilateral trade, the two leaders are likely to exchange views on what they aim to achieve in the negotiations.
While the United States desires a free trade agreement that would cover a range of areas such as goods, services, investment and currency, Japan is insisting the two governments aim for a trade deal on goods only.
Abe and Trump are also expected to coordinate the U.S. leader's trip to Japan, which will likely take place from May 26 to 28. If the trip is realized, Trump would likely become the first foreign state guest to meet with Crown Prince Naruhito after he accedes the throne on May 1, following the abdication of his father Emperor Akihito.
The Japanese government also plans to invite Trump to the Group of 20 summit planned in Osaka at the end of June. Should all meetings occur, it would be rather unusual for the leaders of Japan and the U.S. to meet for three consecutive months.
Prior to the trip to the U.S., Abe is considering visiting France and other European countries as part of preparations for the Osaka Group of 20 summit in June, they said.

Crown Prince ready to honor legacy in new role as next emperor
On the occasion of his 59th birthday on Saturday, Crown Prince Naruhito expressed his resolve to fulfill his new role as the next emperor after he accedes the throne on May 1, saying he will follow the path demonstrated by his parents.
"I would like to pursue my duties as the symbol (of the state) by always being beside the Japanese citizens, and sharing joy and sorrow with the people," the Crown Prince said in his last news conference in that role, held Thursday ahead of his birthday.
The Crown Prince also expressed his readiness to explore new possibilities while continuing the legacy of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, saying, "I would like to pursue what is required of the Imperial family in accordance with the changing times."
Looking back at the years that have passed since he became first in line to the throne, upon the death of his grandfather, Emperor Hirohito, and Emperor Akihito's accession in 1989, the Crown Prince said he has been making efforts to engage with the people.

article had an interesting subhead, circled.

There is a Naoshi Onodera in JP who does claim he is the legal and rightful emperor of Japan and that Emperor Akihito is descended from a group of illegitimate pretenders who were put up as puppet rulers by foreign cabalists who use the Satanic star as their symbol.

Some thoughts on timeline anons, just so we can potentially anticipate what 2019 will bring timeline-wise and our expectations.
For example - Q has said several times that the public need to be educated via information coming to the forefront and being leaked. E.g. You can't go from HRC took bribes > Haiti trafficked children and adrenochrome in a few days. There has to be an organic process of disclosure that takes place.
Q kept mentioning the Senate - Senate Committees will take over the work from Gowdy/Goodlatte in the House. Do we have dates for these taking place? Do we have dates for other Senate Investigations?
Other Events - for example, we have Flynn being sentenced again in March/April?
Grassley is taking over the Finance Committee - what will he be looking at? Clinton Foundation? The Fed?
We have the UK leaving the EU - March 29th 2019
Emperor Akihito of Japan is set to abdicate - 30 April 2019
EU Elections - May 23-26 2019
Here's a list of events in 2019 globally.

Considering Japan's long history with the Dutch, I find it a little spoopy that Emperor Akihito will step down on April 30 of next year, the same day that Queen Beatrix was inaugurated (1980) and abdicated (2013). Also the birthday of Beatrix's predecessor/mother Queen Juliana. Also Walpurgis Night, so yeah…

The City of London Corporation is a one mile square block in London where the 110 Livery Companies operate from. The 110 Livery Companies represent every industry in the global market. Most major corporations today are connected with the Livery Companies through proxies or subsidiaries. Business at the City of London is mostly private and they conceal ownership through private contracts. The Knights Templar of London were headquartered at the inner temple of the City of London and today are the Order of the Garter headed by the British royal family and British Peerage. The City of London Corporation, Knights Templar, and Order of the Garter all use the same red cross as a symbol. The Knights Templar were merchants and bankers that held gold for pilgrims who traveled to Jerusalem and provided them with bank notes which were used at the Templar's merchant shops along the way. The Knights Templar established modern banking. London merchants have a monopoly on gold and silver which they use as leverage over the markets and monetary system. They also manipulate the price of gold and silver from London. This Templar merchant and banking system is rigged and functions like covert monopolies through hidden corporate conglomerates.
Foreign members of the Order of the Garter include King Juan Carlos of Spain, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, King Harald V of Norway, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, and Emperor Akihito of Japan. They are members of the Order of the Garter because they covertly do business in London. The United States is a federal corporation defined under US code 3002 section 15 and is really a continuation of the Virginia Company. The Virginia Company was issued by the British Crown from the City of London Corporation for North American settlements. They are using the Bank for International Settlements as a proxy to steal from corporate governments through foreign tax contracts like the Belgian Scheldt Dues. They then launder and conceal the wealth in private Swiss bank accounts. Washington DC was established as a municipal corporate state and headquarters of the United States through the 1871 District of Columbia Organic Act based on debts owed to foreign entities like the Hudson Bay Company, Irish Government, and Kingdom of Belgium. Prince Lorenz of Belgium works at Gutzwiller bank in Basel Switzerland right near the Bank for International Settlements and is overseeing the private accounts of the royal and noble families.

Another Japan/US Military related story to come out today.
Japanese royal couple in Hawaii on first official US visit
HONOLULU - Prince Akishino, the second son of Japan's Emperor Akihito, and his wife, Princess Kiko, are making their first official visit together to the U.S.
The Japanese royal couple is in Hawaii this week as part of a yearlong celebration of the 150th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants arriving in the islands.
Akishino laid a white wreath with peace lilies on Monday at the National Cemetery of the Pacific in remembrance of fallen U.S. troops.
The couple was accompanied by cemetery director James Horton, and Adm. Phil Davidson, who became last week the commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command in Hawaii, the American military's Pacific headquarters.
article continues below
The prince also laid a second white wreath at Ehime Maru Memorial in downtown Honolulu's Kakaako Waterfront Park, which commemorates Japanese lives lost when a U.S. Navy submarine rammed into a Japanese fisheries training ship in 2001.
During their visit, the royal couple will also plant a tree in Thomas Square, visit the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, and attend dinner with Gov. David Ige at his residence, Washington Place.
The Hawaiian-inspired menu features local ingredients with Japanese touches, such as oysters from Kualoa Farm served with yuzukosho, a Japanese condiment typically made of chilis, yuzu peel and salt.
Other dishes include pipikaula short rib with meat from Kauai, a throwback to a spiced treat similar to beef jerky eaten by Hawaiian cowboys, and steamed moi, called "the king's fish," as only royalty were allowed to eat it, according to Cindy McMillan, a spokeswoman for Ige. The ogo, or seaweed, relish for the fish will contain herbs from the Washington Place garden.
The royals will also taste poke with locally-caught ahi tuna and feast on a dessert of miso-pecan ice cream - all dishes created by Honolulu chef Chris Kajioka of city restaurants Vintage Cave and Senia.
Emperor Akihito announced in December that he would abdicate the Chrysanthemum Throne at the end of April 2019, after reigning for 30 years. His eldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito, is expected to succeed the following day. Akishino, 52, would then take on the role of crown prince.
Akihito has one daughter, Sayako Kuroda, who married a commoner and gave up her title of princess in 2005. Women are not allowed to ascend the throne.
The royal couple visited Brazil in 2015 and Chile in 2017 to mark the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.

Japan emperor, empress leave for Queen Elizabeth's state funeral
Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako on Saturday left for Britain on a government plane to attend Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral, marking the couple's first trip abroad since he ascended the chrysanthemum throne in 2019. For the empress, who has long been battling a stress-induced illness, it is also her first overseas trip since she attended the coronation of Tonga's King Tupou VI in 2015. Japanese emperors do not traditionally attend funerals, and the couple's attendance at the funeral of Britain's longest-reigning monarch on Monday will be only the second time, after then Emperor Akihito and his wife, Empress Michiko, traveled to Belgium for the funeral of King Baudouin in 1993.

This is a big deal for the DS-the Imperial Family actually going to this sez A LOT..total chaos. The Japanese Princes made the NaZis look like complete amateurs and took back to Japan (from all of Asia-Indo) from mid 1800's-well before that actually as they pretty much turned Korea into a backwoods as they were the most advanced of the Asian countries until the wars in the 1500s-to 1943 (US Submarine blockades prevented after) BILLIONS of $ (then-so literally Trillions now and possibly Quadrillion) in Art, Statues, Textiles, Precious Metals, Porcelain, Jewels, basically anything and EVERYTHING of value and the bulk of it is still sitting under the Imperial Palace to this day. The notion that Japan was totally broke after WW2 in one of the biggest lies ever..Tokyo was fire-bombed several times and part of the Imperial Palace hit but it was never decimated like the rest of the city...why? because of all the stuff they plundered from centuries of looting is there. The entire Yamashita Gold story is only the stuff they couldn't get back to Japan starting after 1943 (and it wasn't really Yamashita it was the Japanese Imperial Family's Princes Chichibu and Takeda-Yamashita was tasked with hiding it so that is why it's call that-he was simply following orders from the Imperial Command (Hirohito)

'''Japan's Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako wrap enthronement at shrine'''
Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Japanese Emperor Naruhito marked the completion of his enthronement Friday with a visit to Ise Jingu, a Shinto shrine in central Japan, with Empress Masako. The ceremonial visit included prayers to report the completion of two major rites since the 59-year-old emperor assumed the throne in May after the abdication of his father, former Emperor Akihito. Naruhito completed an enthronement proclamation ceremony, the "Sokuirei Seiden no gi," last month and he performed the traditional Shinto Thanksgiving rite, "Daijosai," last week.
Naruhito traveled to Friday's ceremony in his father's horse-drawn carriage, while the empress, who is allergic to horses, traveled by car. Dressed in a dark orange robe and a layered court kimono, the couple offered prayers at the outer shrine Geku to Toyouke no Omikami, the goddess of food, clothing and shelter. They are expected to visit the Naiku inner shrine, which is dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, on Saturday before returning to Tokyo -- and visit mausoleums of past emperors in Nara and Kyoto next week. Friday's centuries-old ritual included imperial regalia inherited by the emperor upon his succession.
Dignitaries from about 180 countries attended Naruhito's Oct. 22 proclamation ceremony, when he pledged to '''"act according to the Constitution and fulfill my responsibility as the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people of Japan."''' A cluster of buildings known as '''Daijokyu, constructed in the East Gardens for the emperor's Daijosai ritual, will be taken down next month after after an 18-day public display period'''.
