How General Soleimani kick-started the multipolar world
thesaker.is/how-general-soleimani-kick-started-the-multipolar-world
by Pepe Escobar, cross-posted with PressTV with the author's permission
The consensus among future historians will be inevitable: the 2020s started with a diabolic murder.
Baghdad airport, January 3, 2020, 00:52 a.m. local time. The assassination of Gen.QassemSoleimani, commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic RevolutionGuards Corps (IRGC), alongside Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of Iraq's Hashd al-Sha'abi, by laser-guided AGM-114 Hellfire missiles launched from two MQ-9 Reaper drones, was, in fact, murder as an act of war.
This act of war set the tone for the new decade and inspired my book Raging Twenties: Great Power Politics Meets Techno-Feudalism, published in early 2021.
The drone strikes at Baghdad airport, directly approved by the pop entertainer/entrepreneur then ruling the Hegemon, Donald Trump, constituted an imperial act engineered as a stark provocation, capable of engendering an Iranian reaction that would then be countered by, "self-defense", packaged as "deterrence".
The proverbial narrative barrage spun to saturation, ruled it as a "targeted killing": a pre-emptive op squashing Gen. Soleimani's alleged planning of "imminent attacks" against US diplomats and troops. No evidence whatsoever was provided to support the claim.
Everyone not only along the Axis of Resistance - Tehran, Baghdad, Damascus, Hezbollah - but across the Global South had been aware of how Gen. Soleimani led the fight against Daesh in Iraq from 2014 to 2015, and how he had been instrumental in retaking Tikrit in 2015.
This was his real role - a true warrior of the war on terror, not the war of terror. For the Empire, to admit his aura glowed even across - vassalized - lands of Sunni Islam was anathema.
It was up to then-Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi, in front of Parliament in Baghdad, to offer the definitive context: Gen. Soleimani, on a diplomatic mission, had boarded a regular Cham Wings Airbus A320 flight from Damascus to Baghdad. He was involved in complex negotiations between Tehran and Riyadh, with the Iraqi Prime Minister as a mediator, and all that at the request of President Trump.
So the imperial machine - following trademark, decades-long mockery of international law - assassinated a de-facto diplomatic envoy.
In fact two, al-Muhandis exhibited the same leadership qualities as Gen. Soleimani, actively promoting synergy between the battlefield and diplomacy, and was considered absolutely irreplaceable as a key political articulator in Iraq.
Gen. Soleimani's assassination had been "encouraged" since 2007 by a toxic mixture of Straussian neo-cons and neoliberal-cons -supremely ignorant of Southwest Asia's history, culture, and politics - in tandem with the Israeli and Saudi lobbies in Washington.
Trump, blissfully ignorant of international relations and foreign policy matters, could not possibly understand The Big Picture and its dire ramifications when he had only Israeli-firsters of the Jared"of Arabia" Kushner kind whispering in his ear.

Former Israeli Intel Chief Says Israel Convinced US to Kill Soleimani
The 2020 assassination brought the US and Iran to the brink of war
Israel's former military intelligence chief has said Israel convinced the US that Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani posed an "immediate threat" to American soldiers, the same language former President Trump used to justify his assassination at the time, although no evidence was ever provided for the claim.
Soleimani was the commander of Iran's IRGC Quds Force and was killed in Baghdad by a US drone strike in January 2020. At the time, Tamir Hayman served as the head of Israel's Military Intelligence Directorate. Hayman told Jewish News that Israel had provided the US with information to convince the US Soleimani posed a threat.
"We supplied the intelligence and shared analysis and over a long period of time they were eventually convinced that Soleimani was an immediate threat to American lives and its strategic posture in the Middle East," Hayman said.
Trump told reporters at the time of the killing that Soleimani was "plotting imminent and sinister attacks on American diplomats and military personnel, but we caught him in the act and terminated him." The claim was never confirmed, and according to then-Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi, Soleimani was in Baghdad as part of an Iraqi mediation between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
"I was supposed to meet him in the morning the day he was killed, he came to deliver a message from Iran in response to the message we had delivered from the Saudis to Iran," Abdul-Mahdi said after the assassination.
Trump's justification for the assassination later changed, and members of Congress briefed on the killing said the administration provided no evidence of "imminent attacks." In a legally mandated memo to Congress issued in February 2020, the administration dropped the "imminent attacks" claim altogether.
The memo said the assassination was done to "protect United States personnel, to deter Iran from conducting or supporting further attacks against United States forces and interests, to degrade Iran's and Quds Force-back militia's ability to conduct attacks, and to end Iran's strategic escalation of attacks."
The series of events that led to Soleimani's assassination was sparked by a rocket attack on a base in Kirkuk, Iraq, that killed a US contractor on December 27th, 2019. The US blamed the Kirkuk attack on Kataib Hezbollah, a Shia militia the US views as an Iranian proxy.
The US responded to the Kirkuk attack by launching airstrikes on several Kataib Hezbollah targets, killing 25 of the group's fighters. The airstrikes enraged many Iraqis, and protesters stormed the US embassy. After the embassy incident, President Trump ordered the drone strike that killed Soleimani.
The US never substantiated the claim that Kataib Hezbollah was responsible for the Kirkuk attack. In February, Iraqi intelligence officials told The New York Times that it was more likely that ISIS carried out the Kirkuk attack. ISIS would also have the motive to spark fighting between the US and Iran and the Shia militias as they were previously allied against the Sunni terror group.
The drone strike also killed Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes, who led the Popular Mobilization Forces, a group of mostly Iraqi Shia militias that was formed in 2014 to fight ISIS. The killings enraged many in Iraq and brought the US and Iran to the brink of war, but the standoff was defused after Iranian missile strikes on bases in Iraq housing US troops that didn't result in any deaths. But to this day, Iran vows revenge for Soleimani's death.

Iraq continues investigations into Soleimani assassination
The Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq announced yesterday that investigations are continuing into the assassinate of the late commander of the Iranian Quds Force, Qassem Soleimani, and the former deputy head of the Popular Mobilisation Committee, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, according to the Iraqi law.
"The investigation into the airport incident began from the first moment and the Iraqi judiciary dealt with that incident as a criminal act that took place on Iraqi land where some of the victims are Iraqis," the council said in a statement.
According to the statement, the investigation took place according to the Iraqi Code of Criminal Procedure starting with inspecting the scene and meeting with some of the plaintiffs, including the legal representative of the Iranian embassy.
"The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Secretariat of the Council of Ministers had been informed of other details regarding the accident, and that the investigation procedures since the time of the accident continue in accordance with the Iraqi law," it added.
On 3 January, a US drone strike near Baghdad International Airport targeted and killed Soleimani while he was reportedly travelling to meet Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi in Baghdad.

Fresh rocket attacks hit US embassy grounds in Baghdad; Iraqi PM condemns it
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Five Katyusha rockets landed on the US embassy campus grounds in the Iraqi capital Sunday evening, with parts of the compound reportedly damaged. No casualties were reported but sirens to take cover were reportedly heard at the site.
"Five Katyusha rockets hit the Green Zone without causing any casualties," the Iraqi military communications center said in a statement. The Green Zone is a fortified area in the capital where diplomatic offices, as well as government buildings, are located.
The Iraqi Commander in Chief, caretaker Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi, issued a separate statement shortly after, condemning the act of "aggression," noting that the missiles fell "inside the US embassy campus."
Kurdish politician and Iraq's former foreign affairs and finance minister, Hoshyar Zebari, claimed in a tweet that "[t]he Embassy restaurant or canteen was damaged and burned" in the strike.
"This is a very dangerous game by #PMF uncontrolled factions to galvanize the tense situation," he added, referring to the Iranian-backed Hashd al-Shaabi militias, also called the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).
The attack comes just six days after three missiles struck near the embassy. Such rocket strikes have been semi-regular over the past few months amid ongoing tensions between the US and Iran along with its Iraqi proxies.

ISIS and Israel praise Trump's assassination of Iranian top general Soleimani
Series of unfortunate events led to tragic downing of Ukrainian passenger plane in Iran.
Ten days have passed since US President Donald J. Trump ordered the assassination of Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force (IRCG) Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. Soleimani had just arrived at Baghdad International airport from Damascus at the invitation of Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi for a declared diplomatic peace mission to lessen tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
The White House was provided with important details from Israeli intelligence and carried out the airstrike without congressional support or knowledge and without providing a shred of evidence that Soleimani was planning attacks on American's and US embassies.
The lie that was told to the American public (and by extension the world) by the Trump administration is that Soleimani was an imminent threat and was planning terror missions targeting American's, US soldiers, and US embassies, and in order to thwart his plans the US had to act quickly and assassinate Iran's top military official. During President Trump's speech to the nation on Wednesday he accused Soleimani of directing recent attacks against US personnel in Iraq which injured four and killed one American.
In an interview with Fox News that aired on Thursday, Pompeo said "There is no doubt that there were a series of imminent attacks that were being plotted by Qassem Soleimani," He went on to say, "we don't know precisely when, and we don't know precisely where, but it was real." Maybe it's just me, but without having any specifics whatsoever Pompeo's statements do not make Soleimani sound like a "real" threat, if anything this solidifies the notion that the White House used a lie that lacks any evidential backing to bring us inches away from war with a nuclear regional power.
Iraqi Prime Minister Abdul-Mahdi called the assassination of Soleimani and al-Muhandis an act of aggression against Iraq and the Iraqi people, and a flagrant violation of Iraqi sovereignty, and stated it was a dangerous escalation. Since then US troops have been asked to leave Iraq but the request has fallen on deaf ears. Iraq does not want to become a battlefield for war between the United States and Iran.
Lt. General Soleimani was an instrumental figure in the fight against Daesh in Syria and Iraq and saved countless Christian and Muslim lives by thwarting missions that put their civilian lives in danger. However, as is the case in many of Washington's manufactured pretexts used to justify unwarranted wars and invasions, heroes are vilified and terrorists (along with their sponsors) are revered.

US won't heed Iraq's call for troop withdrawal, calls military presence there 'appropriate'
The US is willing to discuss "recommitting to strategic partnership" with Iraq but not a troop withdrawal, the US State Department said, after the country's prime minister told Washington to "prepare a mechanism" for pull back.
In a statement on Friday, department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said that the US military presence in Iraq was 'appropriate' and that any delegation the US might send to Iraq to discuss arrangements between the two countries would not discuss the removal of troops.
Ortagus acknowledged that there does "need to be a conversation" between US and Iraqi officials, "not just regarding security, but about our financial, economic, and diplomatic partnership."
Earlier Friday, Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi had asked US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to send a delegation to begin preparations for a troop pullout.
The Iraqi parliament last week passed a non-binding resolution asking the government to expel foreign troops and to cancel the ongoing request for military assistance from the US-led coalition.
There are currently 5,200 US troops stationed at bases across Iraq, who were invited by the Iraqi government in 2014 to help combat ISIS militants in the region. The relationship between Washington and Baghdad has soured in recent months, however, as tensions in the region flared. The mood got even more tense after a US drone strike in Baghdad killed a commander of Iran's elite Quds Force.

The Deeper Story Behind The Assassination Of Soleimani
Authored by Federico Pieraccini via The Strategic Culture Foundation,
Days after the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani, new and important information is coming to light from a speech given by the Iraqi prime minister. The story behind Soleimani's assassination seems to go much deeper than what has thus far been reported, involving Saudi Arabia and China as well the US dollar's role as the global reserve currency.
The Iraqi prime minister, Adil Abdul-Mahdi, has revealed details of his interactions with Trump in the weeks leading up to Soleimani's assassination in a speech to the Iraqi parliament. He tried to explain several times on live television how Washington had been browbeating him and other Iraqi members of parliament to toe the American line, even threatening to engage in false-flag sniper shootings of both protesters and security personnel in order to inflame the situation, recalling similar modi operandi seen in Cairo in 2009, Libya in 2011, and Maidan in 2014. The purpose of such cynicism was to throw Iraq into chaos.
Here is the reconstruction of the story:
[Speaker of the Council of Representatives of Iraq] Halbousi attended the parliamentary session while almost none of the Sunni members did. This was because the Americans had learned that Abdul-Mehdi was planning to reveal sensitive secrets in the session and sent Halbousi to prevent this. Halbousi cut Abdul-Mehdi off at the commencement of his speech and then asked for the live airing of the session to be stopped. After this, Halbousi together with other members, sat next to Abdul-Mehdi, speaking openly with him but without it being recorded. This is what was discussed in that session that was not broadcast:
Abdul-Mehdi spoke angrily about how the Americans had ruined the country and now refused to complete infrastructure and electricity grid projects unless they were promised 50% of oil revenues, which Abdul-Mehdi refused.
The complete (translated) words of Abdul-Mahdi's speech to parliament:
This is why I visited China and signed an important agreement with them to undertake the construction instead. Upon my return, Trump called me to ask me to reject this agreement. When I refused, he threatened to unleash huge demonstrations against me that would end my premiership.
Huge demonstrations against me duly materialized and Trump called again to threaten that if I did not comply with his demands, then he would have Marine snipers on tall buildings target protesters and security personnel alike in order to pressure me.
I refused again and handed in my resignation. To this day the Americans insist on us rescinding our deal with the Chinese.
After this, when our Minister of Defense publicly stated that a third party was targeting both protestors and security personnel alike (just as Trump had threatened he would do), I received a new call from Trump threatening to kill both me and the Minister of Defense if we kept on talking about this "third party".
Nobody imagined that the threat was to be applied to General Soleimani, but it was difficult for Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi to reveal the weekslong backstory behind the terrorist attack.
I was supposed to meet him [Soleimani] later in the morning when he was killed. He came to deliver a message from Iran in response to the message we had delivered to the Iranians from the Saudis.
We can surmise, judging by Saudi Arabia's reaction, that some kind of negotiation was going on between Tehran and Riyadh:
The Kingdom's statement regarding the events in Iraq stresses the Kingdom's view of the importance of de-escalation to save the countries of the region and their people from the risks of any escalation.
Above all, the Saudi Royal family wanted to let people know immediately that they had not been informed of the US operation:
The kingdom of Saudi Arabia was not consulted regarding the US strike. In light of the rapid developments, the Kingdom stresses the importance of exercising restraint to guard against all acts that may lead to escalation, with severe consequences.
And to emphasize his reluctance for war, Mohammad bin Salman sent a delegation to the United States. Liz Sly, the Washington Post Beirut bureau chief, tweated:
Saudi Arabia is sending a delegation to Washington to urge restraint with Iran on behalf of [Persian] Gulf states. The message will be: 'Please spare us the pain of going through another war'.
What clearly emerges is that the success of the operation against Soleimani had nothing to do with the intelligence gathering of the US or Israel. It was known to all and sundry that Soleimani was heading to Baghdad in a diplomatic capacity that acknowledged Iraq's efforts to mediate a solution to the regional crisis with Saudi Arabia.

In the name of of Allah the Merciful
Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, 1/8/2020, we received an official oral message from the Islamic Republic of Iran that the Iranian response to the assassination of the martyr Qasim Soleimani had begun or would begin shortly …
… and that the strike will be limited to the whereabouts of the US military in Iraq without specifying its location. And at the exact same time, the American side called us and the rockets were falling on the wing of the American forces at Ein al-Assad bases in Anbar and Harir in Arbil and in other locations.
Of course, we would have been alerted as soon as we had received the news of the attack, the Iraqi military leaders to take the necessary precautions. We have not received any casualties so far on the Iraqi side, and we have not officially received the losses on the side of the coalition forces.
And Mr. Commander in Chief has continued to follow developments since the start of the attack and until this hour and is making the necessary internal and external contacts in an attempt to contain the situation and not enter into open war, Iraq and the region will be among the first victims.
And Iraq, as it rejects any violation of its sovereignty and aggression on its lands, the government continues its efforts to prevent escalation, respect for all of the sovereignty of Iraq, not violating it, and not exposing its people to danger …
… We have called, and we call on all, to exercise restraint, prevail over the language of reason, adhere to international covenants, respect the Iraqi state and the decisions of its government, and help it to contain and overcome this serious crisis threatening it, the region, and the world with a devastating, comprehensive war.

PM: Iraq won't become an arena for settling scores
The Iraqi caretaker Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi said yesterday the country will not become an arena for "settling scores" between the US and Iran, Anadolu reported.
Abdul-Mahdi made the remarks during a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Baghdad, Zhang Tao, in the prime minister's office in the city, the government said in a statement.
Abdul-Mahdi was quoted as saying: "Washington has helped Iraq in its war against the Islamic State militant group, and we do not want to become a party to any conflict."
He added that the US forces exist in Iraq as a result of an Iraqi decision and their withdrawal is also an Iraqi decision.
Meanwhile, the Chinese ambassador said that his country "strongly supports Iraq and pays attention to the development of relations with Baghdad," noting that Beijing will work to "rebuild and support the Iraqi government and people".
The Chinese ambassador stressed Beijing's keenness to "increase security and military cooperation" with Baghdad.
Iraq's parliament called on Sunday for US and other foreign troops to leave as the backlash grows against the US killing of a top Iranian general.
The developments come after the assassination of the Commander of the Iranian Quds Force, Qassem Soleimani, in an American drone strike near Baghdad International Airport on Friday.

Financial N-option will settle Trump's oil war
On foreign soil, as a guest nation, US has assassinated a diplomatic envoy whose mission the US had requested
The bombshell facts were delivered by caretaker Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi, during an extraordinary, historic parliamentary session in Baghdad on Sunday.
Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani had flown into Baghdad on a normal carrier flight, carrying a diplomatic passport. He had been sent by Tehran to deliver, in person, a reply to a message from Riyadh on de-escalation across the Middle East. Those negotiations had been requested by the Trump administration.
So Baghdad was officially mediating between Tehran and Riyadh, at the behest of Trump. And Soleimani was a messenger. Adil Abdul-Mahdi was supposed to meet Soleimani at 8:30 am, Baghdad time, last Friday. But a few hours before the appointed time, Soleimani died as the object of a targeted assassination at Baghdad airport.
Let that sink in - for the annals of 21st century diplomacy. Once again: it does not matter whether the assassination order was issued by President Trump, the US Deep State or the usual suspects - or when. After all, the Pentagon had Soleimani on its sights for a long time, but always refused to go for the final hit, fearing devastating consequences.
Now, the fact is that the United States government - on foreign soil, as a guest nation - has assassinated a diplomatic envoy who was on an official mission that had been requested by the United States government itself.
Baghdad will formally denounce this behavior to the United Nations. However, it would be idle to expect UN outrage about the US killing of a diplomatic envoy. International law was dead even before 2003's Shock and Awe.

Erdogan: Iran Cannot Leave Assassination Of Soleimani Unanswered
It will be wrong to leave the assassination of Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Qods Force of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, unanswered, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told CNN Turk.
"I believe the killing of any commander from the top echelons of any country should not be left without a response," the Turkish President said commenting on the developments around the Soleimani's assassination.
Erdogan added that in the recent phone call he asked US President Donald Trump to "refrain from escalation with Iran."
"It is crucial now to take control of the crisis which might cause harm to all the parties concerned," Erdogan noted.
On January 3, Major General Qassem Soleimani as well as Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units, and several other Iraqi and Iranian officers were killed by US strikes on the Iraqi capital of Bahdad. The US attac, seen by Iran as an act of war, put the entire region on the brink of a new large-scale military conflict.
On January 5, the Iraqi Parliament voted to expel US forces from the country and close airspace for the US-led coalition. Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi also revealed that on the day of the assassination Soleimani arrived in Baghdad under an official request from the Iraqi government. He was expected to receive de-escalation proposals from Saudi Arabia. This initiative was reportedly supported by US President Donald Trump during a phone call with the Iraqi Prime Minister.

Secretary of State Defends US Presence in Iraq as Its Parliament Moves to Expel Troops
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo defended the U.S. military's presence in Iraq following a resolution passed by Iraqi members of Parliament to expel foreign troops following the death of an Iranian general.
On Sunday, the country's Parliament voted to pass a measure that would expel foreign troops after Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi called on members to act.
"As for the activity today with respect to Iraq, we've been in their country. We've been supporting Iraqi sovereignty. We've been continuing to take down the terrorist threat against the Iraqi people," Pompeo told "Fox News Sunday."
Iraq has been torn between its close relationship with Iran and its relationship with Washington after a drone strike killed Qassem Soleimani, the leader of Iran's elite paramilitary forces and intelligence agency, at the Baghdad airport.
Pompeo dismissed the claim by Abdul-Mahdi, who resigned in November but then became the acting prime minister, and said he is under considerable pressure from Tehran.
"We are confident that the Iraqi people want the United States to continue to be there to fight the counterterror campaign, and we'll continue to do all the things we need to do to keep America safe," Pompeo said.
Soleimani's death was prompted by a series of events in Iraq, which included the siege of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. President Donald Trump and other American officials linked that activity to Iran and Soleimani, which Iran has denied. Before, the United States targeted the Kataib Hezbollah militia group in response to a rocket attack on an Iraqi base that killed a U.S. citizen and American troops.

US Suspends Anti-ISIS Mission in Iraq to Protect Against Iranian Reprisals
The 5,000 U.S. troops in Iraq have suspended their anti-Islamic State mission to focus on force protection against expected retaliation from Iran or its proxies for the killing of Quds Force Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the U.S. command said Sunday.
Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve's statement on its change of mission comes amid growing demands in Iraq's parliament for the complete withdrawal of U.S. forces from the country.
A series of rocket attacks on U.S. positions in Iraq over the last two months, including two more Saturday night, "has limited our capacity to conduct training with partners and to support their operations against Daesh [another name for ISIS] and we have therefore paused these activities," the task force said in the statement.
The U.S. is still committed to the train, advise and assist mission against ISIS, but "our first priority is protecting all coalition personnel," according to the statement.
The task force cited at least 11 wide-ranging rocket attacks over the last two months blamed on the Iranian-backed Kata'ib Hezbollah (KH) militia, including one on a base near Kirkuk on Dec. 27 that killed an American contractor and wounded several U.S. troops.
In response to the Kirkuk attack, U.S. F-15 Strike Eagle fighters carried out airstrikes against five KH targets in Iraq and Syria.
Last Thursday, President Donald Trump ordered the strike that killed Soleimani, who has been charged by the U.S. as the mastermind behind attacks that killed hundreds of U.S. troops since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
In a statement Sunday, OIR spokesman Col. Myles B. Coggins II confirmed that two more rocket attacks occurred in quick succession Saturday night on Baghdad's Green Zone, which houses the U.S. Embassy, and Balad Air Base. There were no casualties.
The first attack occurred at about 7:46 p.m. local time on the Green Zone and the second at 7:50 p.m. at Balad, Coggins said, adding that the latest attacks brought the total over the last two months to 13.
He said that reports of a third attack near Mosul in northwestern Iraq were false.
The stunning move to suspend counter-terror missions against ISIS in Iraq came as the Iraqi parliament debated demands to order the withdrawal of U.S. forces to show the Baghdad government's condemnation of Soleimani's killing and avoid Iraq becoming the battlefield for a U.S.-Iran war.
In an address to parliament, acting Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi, who announced his resignation in early December and has stayed on in a caretaker capacity, called for "urgent measures" to bring about the withdrawal of all of the estimated 5,000 U.S. troops in Iraq.

Iraq Votes To Expel US Troops As Iranian MPs Chant "Death To America"
If President Trump wanted to reduce America's troop presence in the Middle East, he may have just got his wish, albeit not at his orders.
During an emergency parliamentary session this morning, the Iraqi government just voted to have foreign troops removed from the country.
Interim Iraqi prime minister, Adil Abdul Mahdi, stressed during the session, that while the US government notified the Iraqi military of the planned strike on Soleimani, his government denied Washington permission to continue with the operation.
As RT reports, Mahdi said after the incident that it was clear it was in the interest of both the US and Iraq to end the presence of foreign forces on Iraqi soil.
"Despite the internal and external difficulties that we might face, it remains best for Iraq on principle and practically."
Still there are plenty more US bases around…

Iraqi Parliament Calls For US Troops to Leave
Iraq's parliament has passed a resolution calling for foreign troops to leave the country in the wake of a U.S. air strike that killed Iran's top military commander, Qasem Soleimani, near Baghdad's airport last week.
The Iraqi government "commits to revoke its request for assistance from the international coalition fighting [the Islamic State extremist group] due to the end of military operations in Iraq and the achievement of victory," the lawmakers said in the resolution adopted on January 5.
The government of Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi "must work to end the presence of any foreign troops on Iraqi soil and prohibit them from using its land, airspace, or water for any reason," they added.
Parliamentary resolutions are nonbinding to the government, but Abdul-Mahdi had earlier urged parliament to take urgent measures and end the presence of foreign troops as soon as possible.

US killing of Iranian commander on Iraqi soil violates terms of US stationing troops in the country - Iraqi PM
The interim prime minister of Iraq has condemned the US assassination of a senior Iranian commander, calling it an act of aggression against his country. Qassem Soleimani was killed at Baghdad airport.
Soleimani, the commander of the elite Quds Force, was killed after his convoy was hit by US missiles. A deputy commander of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), the Iraqi militia collective backed by Iran, was killed in the same airstrike.
In a statement on Friday, the caretaker leader of Iraq's protest-challenged government, Adil Abdul Mahdi, said the US assassination operation was a "flagrant violation of Iraqi sovereignty" and an insult to the dignity of his country.
He stressed that the US had violated the terms under which American troops are allowed to stay in Iraq with the purpose of training Iraqi troops and fighting the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS). He added that the killing may trigger a major escalation of violence and result in "a devastating war in Iraq" that will spill out into the region.
The Iraqi government has called on the parliament to hold an emergency session to discuss an appropriate response, Mahdi said.
The killing of Soleimani marks a significant escalation in US confrontation with Iran. Washington considers the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), to which Quds belongs, a terrorist organization and claimed the slain commander was plotting attacks on American citizens.
Tehran said the Quds commander was targeted for his personal contribution to defeating IS in Iraq and Syria. Soleimani drove Iran's support for militias in both countries that fought against the terrorist force.

Trump tweets after Quds chief killing: 'Iran never won a war, but never lost a negotiation!'
Following the US assassination of Iran's Quds Force chief Qassem Soleimani, President Donald Trump took to Twitter, issuing a quite cryptic message that Iran has "never won a war, but never lost a negotiation."
The commander of the elite Quds Force was killed overnight in Baghdad International Airport, alongside with several other high-ranking officials from local pro-Iranian militias.
The assassination was carried out on the personal "direction" of Trump, the US military has said, claiming it was acting to protect America and its citizens. Soleimani was blamed for "the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members", and was accused of plotting further attacks on the US.
While the killing prompted a lot of self-back-patting among top US officials over a job well done, the US President himself took an apparent conciliatory tone, suggesting that the attack was carried out to push Tehran into negotiations.
In a separate thread, Trump praised himself for the assassination, insisting that Soleimani "killed or badly wounded thousands of Americans over an extended period of time, and was plotting to kill many more," and therefore"should have been taken out many years ago." He also claimed that the Quds Force chief was "both hated and feared" in his home country, and that the Iranians "are not nearly as saddened as the leaders will let the outside world believe."
Earlier in the day, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has called the killing of Soleimani a "defensive action," and said "the US remains committed to de-escalation."
But, with the assassination having triggered massive outrage both in Iran and Iraq, any gesture of outreach from the US is bound to fall flat. Tehran has called the attack an "act of international terrorism," vowing "vigorous revenge on America" for the death of Soleimani.
Iraqi officials have been angered by the airstrike, with PM Adil Abdul Mahdi calling it a "flagrant violation" of its sovereignty. The murder has apparently reinvigorated Iraq's efforts to get the US troops out; the two major parliamentary blocs have called for the adoption of a law mandating the withdrawal of all foreign military personnel from the country.
Influential Iraqi Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr said the killing targeted Iraqi opposition members and extended his condolences to Tehran. He also hinted at the re-establishment of his anti-US militia, known as the Mahdi Army, disbanded over a decade ago, urging its members to get ready to protect Iraq.

Iraqi PM warns of devastating war, Sadr orders forces to be ready
Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi has condemned US assassination of IRGC Quds Force commander General Qassem Soleimani, warning of devastating consequences for Iraq as senior Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr put all his forces on alert.
The United States confirmed early on Friday that its forces had assassinated Gen. Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq's pro-government Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), in an attack at Baghdad's international airport.
Abdul-Mahdi blasted the US strike as a blatant act of "aggression" that would "spark a devastating war." He described General Soleimani and al-Muhandis as the icons of Iraq's victory over Western-backed Daesh terrorists.
"The assassination of an Iraqi military commander in an official post is an aggression against the country of Iraq, its state, its government and its people," the PM said, referring to al-Muhandis.
He described the strike as a "flagrant violation of the conditions authorizing the presence of US troops" on Iraqi soil and said it should be met with legislation that safeguards Iraq's security and sovereignty.
Abdul-Mahdi called on the Iraqi parliament to convene an extraordinary session. The parliament said it will reconvene on Saturday to decide the future of America's military presence.
Attempt to suppress anti-US sentiments in Iraq
Sadr sent his condolences to the Iranian nation and Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamanei.
He condemned the targeted assassination of General Soleimani and al-Muhandis as an attempt by Washington to stifle anti-US sentiments in Iraq and the nation's resolve to uproot foreign-backed terrorism.
The cleric also ordered all his forces to maintain readiness to defend the Arab country against further violations by American forces.
"As the patron of the patriotic Iraqi resistance I give the order for all mujahideen, specially the Mehdi Army, Promised Day Brigade, and all patriotic and disciplined groups to be ready to protect Iraq," he said in a statement.
He also called on all sides to behave with "wisdom and shrewdness."
End of US military presence in Iraq 'imminent'
Qais al-Khazali, the leader of Iraq's Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq movement, ordered his fighters to be on high alert and said the strike would spell the end of the US military presence in Iraq.
"All fighters should be on high alert for upcoming battle and great victory. The price for the blood for the martyred commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis is the complete end to American military presence in Iraq," local TV channel al-Ahd quoted Khazali as saying.

Iran Reveals U.S Supports ISIS, asks Iraq to Expel U.S forces ASAP
TEHRAN - Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has called on the Iraqi prime minister to expel US forces as Washington continues to seek excuses to remain there after a 16-year devastating presence and hundreds of thousands of lives lost.
"The US goal in Iraq is beyond mere military presence - they are behind long-term interests as well as establishing a government like the military governments that formed after the occupation of Iraq," said Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Iraq's Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi during their meeting in Tehran.
"The Iraqi government must do something [for] the US military to leave Iraq as soon as possible," he said, quoted by the television channel Press TV.
While Iraqi lawmakers are allegedly discussing a bill that requires the complete withdrawal of the US military, Washington refuses to leave, stating that without its presence, Daesh [commonly known as ISIS] would inevitably re-emerge - and that Iraq is a crucial US resource to "monitor" Iran.
Khamenei warned the Iraqi prime minister to beware of Washington's true goals. "The US and Saudi rhetoric about Iraq is different from its real intentions," he said.
"They channeled money, weapons and equipment to Daesh at a time when [the terrorists] occupied Mosul and now, when Iraq defeated Daesh, they are speaking friendly words," said the Iranian leader.
With the rise of Daesh, the US sent its forces to Iraq, after which they "almost" withdrew their troops in 2011. Meanwhile, Washington plans to maintain about 5,200 military personnel indefinitely in Iraq.
Meanwhile, the US plans to put the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on its list of foreign terrorist organizations on April 8.
Both Tehran and Washington have already accused each other of supporting terrorism and have labeled each other's actions as "terrorist," literally or figuratively.
"If the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution are placed on the list of US terrorist groups, we will put that country's military on the black list of terrorists alongside Daesh," national security committee of the Iranian parliament, Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, was quoted as saying by agency Mehr.

The decision to appoint a group as a terrorist organization is made by the Secretary of State, the US Attorney General, and the Secretary of the Treasury if Congress does not block its decision. The group that is alleged to be a terrorist organization, however, may petition a U.S. appellate court to review the designation.
At this point, the IRGC has already been sanctioned by Washington since the Treasury Department imposed sanctions in October 2017 under an executive order of the September 11 issue issued during George W. Bush's administration.

Iraq will repatriate captured terrorists in Syria
BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:20 P.M.) - Iraq will be repatriating any Iraqi national that has been captured in Syria, Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi said during a press conference on Wednesday.
According to Abdul-Mahdi, all captured Iraqi nationals will be repatriated and brought to justice for their crimes committed.
Abdul-Mahdi made these comments during a press conference with U.S. Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.
According to the Associated Press, a senior Iraqi intelligence official said there are up to 20,000 Iraqis, including members of the Islamic State, which Baghdad will bring back home by April.
Earlier this year, France said they would make an effort to repatriate their captured nationals in Syria; however, Paris has yet to take any of their nationals.

PM Abdul-Mahdi says no foreign bases will be accepted on Iraqi soil
Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi had told the visiting US defense chief that his country will accept no foreign military bases on its soil, just as it will not take dictates from outsiders.
In a meeting with Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan in Baghdad on Tuesday, Abdul-Mahdi said that Iraq-US relations must be based on the "basic agreements" existing between the two sides, which merely deal with fighting terrorism and training Iraqi forces, and "nothing else," the Iraqi News reported.
Iraq makes "independent" decisions and will not be influenced by foreign pressure or dictates, he noted, reiterating Baghdad's objection to the presence of foreign military bases on Iraqi territory.
Abdul-Mahdi also hailed Iraq's achievements in restoring stability after defeating the Daesh terrorist group, and urged international support for the ongoing reconstruction process.
The premier said Iraq was open to enhanced cooperation and relations with Arab and regional states in line with national interests.
Back in 2014, Daesh launched a campaign of attacks and vicious acts of bloodshed that resulted in Iraq losing a third of its territory. Iraqi army soldiers and allied fighters fought back fiercely until they managed to recapture the lost territory three years later.
In December 2017, Iraq finally declared the end of Daesh reign of terror, thanks to Iran's military advisory support.
The US, however, has kept up its military presence in the Arab country.
President Donald Trump sparked a wave of condemnations in Iraq earlier this month, when he said he intended to keep US troops there to keep a close eye on Iran.
Reacting to those remarks days later, Abdul-Mahdi insisted that his country could in no way be used for action against others. Iraq's most senior Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani also rejected propositions that Iraq would serve as a launching pad to harm other countries.
The American president also raised the ire of Iraqis by making a surprise visit in late December to US forces deployed to Anbar Province, with no stop in Baghdad. The move prompted calls for the expulsion of US troops.

'''Pence makes surprise visit to Iraq'''
Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday made an '''unannounced trip to Iraq'''. Pence and his wife, Karen, were accompanied by a small group of the vice president's associates and about a dozen journalists, according to a pool report. The group departed Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Friday for the 15-hour journey to Al Asad Air Base in western Iraq. The couple visited with U.S. troops ahead of next week's Thanksgiving holiday and had lunch with about 150 troops. President Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited U.S. troops at the base on the day after Christmas last year.
Pence also received a classified briefing at the air base, from which U.S. forces launched the operation that killed Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi in Syria last month, and then spoke by phone with Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi. The trip was also meant to reassure the United States' Kurdish allies in the region after Trump ordered the withdrawal of American troops. The vice president traveled to Erbil to meet with Iraqi Kurdistan President Nechirvan Barzani.
