NASA balloons head North of Arctic circle for long-duration flights

NASA is set to begin launch operations mid-May for the 2024 Sweden Long-Duration Scientific Balloon Campaign, according to the official website of the organization.
Four stadium-sized, scientific balloons carrying science missions and technology demonstrations are scheduled to lift off from Swedish Space Corporation's Esrange Space Center, situated north of the Arctic Circle near Kiruna, Sweden. The campaign will continue through early July.
"NASA's Balloon Program is excited to conduct our long-duration balloon campaign from Sweden this year," said Andrew Hamilton, acting director of NASA's Balloon Program Office. "Our partnership with the Swedish Space Corporation is valuable to NASA and the scientific community by allowing us to use their high-quality facilities at Esrange."

Esrange, located in a vast unpopulated area in the northernmost part of Sweden, is an ideal location for the campaign. This area in Sweden's polar region experiences constant daylight during summer. NASA's zero-pressure balloons, used during the campaign, typically experience gas loss during the warming and cooling of the day to night cycle. However, they can perform long-duration flights in the constant sunlight of a polar region. "The location of the launch range and the stratospheric winds allow for excellent flight conditions to gather many days of scientific data as the balloons traverse from Sweden to northern Canada," said Hamilton.

Four primary missions on deck for the Sweden campaign include:
HELIX (High-Energy Light Isotope eXperiment): A balloon-borne experiment that features a powerful superconducting magnet designed to measure the flux of high-energy cosmic ray isotopes to energies that have not been explored. The measurements will help determine the age of cosmic rays in our galaxy.
BOOMS (Balloon Observation of Microburst Scales): A high-resolution imager of X-rays from energetic electron microbursts that appear in the polar atmosphere. The mission will fly on a 60 million cubic feet balloon, a test flight set to qualify the balloon for reaching altitudes greater than 150,000 feet, which is higher than NASA's current stratospheric inventory.
SUNRISE-III: A solar observatory that takes high-resolution imaging and spectro-polarimetry of layers of the Sun called the solar photosphere and chromosphere, and active regions to measure magnetic field, temperature, and velocities with high height temporal resolution.
XL-Calibur: A telescope that will observe a sample of galactic black hole and neutron star sources to gain new insight on how these objects accelerate electrons and emit X-rays.

Piggyback missions, or smaller payloads, sharing a ride on the XL-Calibur balloon flight include:
IRCSP (Infrared Channeled Spectro-Polarimeter): A technology development mission for high-altitude spectro-polarimetric measurements of cloud tops to help improve measurements of the size and shape of ice particles, which are crucial in understanding weather and improving climate models.
WALRUSS (Wallops Atmospheric Light Radiation and Ultraviolet Spectrum Sensor): A technology development mission for a sensor package capable of measuring the total ultraviolet (UV) ? split among UVA, UVB, and uvc wavelengths ?? and ozone concentration.

A few years ago, small handheld far uvc systems cost upwards of $30,000. As of this writing, that price has fallen dramatically, with far uvc handheld devices now retailing at around $3,000. While the cost may decrease with mass production, simple far uvc equipment could cost several thousand dollars, and more advanced equipment could cost several tens of thousands of dollars.

Abstract

Background: Ebola virus (EBOV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) have been identified as potential threats to blood safety. This study investigated the efficacy of the THERAFLEX UV-Platelets and THERAFLEX MB-Plasma pathogen inactivation systems to inactivate EBOV and MERS-CoV in platelet concentrates (PCs) and plasma, respectively.

Study design and methods: PCs and plasma were spiked with high titers of cell culture-derived EBOV and MERS-CoV, treated with various light doses of ultraviolet C (uvc; THERAFLEX UV-Platelets) or methylene blue (MB) plus visible light (MB/light; THERAFLEX MB-Plasma), and assessed for residual viral infectivity.

Results: uvc reduced EBOV (?4.5 log) and MERS-CoV (?3.7 log) infectivity in PCs to the limit of detection, and MB/light decreased EBOV (?4.6 log) and MERS-CoV (?3.3 log) titers in plasma to nondetectable levels.

Conclusions: Both THERAFLEX UV-Platelets (uvc) and THERAFLEX MB-Plasma (MB/light) effectively reduce EBOV and MERS-CoV infectivity in platelets and plasma, respectively.

But not all UV light is the same. Longer UV waves, called UVA, don't have quite enough energy to cause problems. It's the mid-range UVB waves in sunlight that are primarily responsible for killing microbes and putting our own cells at risk of Sun damage.
Short-wave uvc radiation has been shown to be effective against viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, even while it's still safely enveloped in human fluids.
But this type of UV doesn't usually come into contact with Earth's surface, thanks to the ozone layer.
"uvc is great for hospitals," said co-author and Oregon State University toxicologist Julie McMurry. "But in other environments - for instance, kitchens or subways - uvc would interact with the particulates to produce harmful ozone."
In July 2020, an experimental study tested the effects of UV light on SARS-CoV-2 in simulated saliva. They recorded the virus was inactivated when exposed to simulated sunlight for between 10-20 minutes.
"Natural sunlight may be effective as a disinfectant for contaminated nonporous materials," Wood and colleagues concluded in the paper.
Luzzatto-Feigiz and team compared those results with a theory about how sunlight achieved this, which was published just a month later, and saw the math didn't add up.
This study found the SARS-CoV-2 virus was three times more sensitive to the UV in sunlight than influenza A, with 90 percent of the coronavirus's particles being inactivated after just half an hour of exposure to midday sunlight in summer.
By comparison, in winter light infectious particles could remain intact for days.
Environmental calculations made by a separate team of researchers concluded the virus's RNA molecules are being photochemically damaged directly by light rays.
This is more powerfully achieved by shorter wavelengths of light, like uvc and UVB. As uvc doesn't reach Earth's surface, they based their environmental light exposure calculations on the medium-wave UVB part of the UV spectrum.
"The experimentally observed inactivation in simulated saliva is over eight times faster than would have been expected from the theory," wrote Luzzatto-Feigiz and colleagues.
"So, scientists don't yet know what's going on," Luzzatto-Fegiz said.
The researchers suspect it's possible that instead of affecting the RNA directly, long-wave UVA may be interacting with molecules in the testing medium (simulated saliva) in a way that hastens the inactivation of the virus.
Something similar is seen in wastewater treatment - where UVA reacts with other substances to create molecules that damage viruses.
If UVA can be harnessed to combat SARS-CoV-2, cheap and energy-efficient wavelength-specific light sources might be useful in augmenting air filtration systems at relatively low risk for human health.
"Our analysis points to the need for additional experiments to separately test the effects of specific light wavelengths and medium composition," Luzzatto-Fegiz concludes.
With the ability of this virus to remain suspended in the air for extended periods of time, the safest means to avoid it in countries where it's running rampant is still social distancing and wearing masks where distancing isn't possible. But it's nice to know that sunlight may be helping us out during the warmer months.
Their analysis was published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Abstract
Infectious airborne microbes, including many pathological microbes that cause respiratory infections, are commonly found in medical facilities and constitute a serious threat to human health. Thus, an effective method for reducing the number of microbes floating in the air will aid in the minimization of the incidence of respiratory infectious diseases. Here, we demonstrate that chlorine dioxide (ClO2) gas at extremely low concentrations, which has no detrimental effects on human health, elicits a strong effect to inactivate bacteria and viruses and significantly reduces the number of viable airborne microbes in a hospital operating room. In one set of experiments, a suspension of Staphylococcus aureus, bacteriophage MS2, and bacteriophage ?X174 were released into an exposure chamber. When ClO2 gas at 0.01 or 0.02 parts per million (ppm, volume/volume) was present in the chamber, the numbers of surviving microbes in the air were markedly reduced after 120 min. The reductions were markedly greater than the natural reductions of the microbes in the chamber. In another experiment, the numbers of viable airborne bacteria in the operating room of a hospital collected over a 24-hour period in the presence or absence of 0.03 ppm ClO2 gas were found to be 10.9 ± 6.7 and 66.8 ± 31.2 colony-forming units/m3 (n = 9, p < 0.001), respectively. Taken together, we conclude that ClO2 gas at extremely low concentrations (?0.03 ppm) can reduce the number of viable microbes floating in the air in a room. These results strongly support the potential use of ClO2 gas at a non-toxic level to reduce infections caused by the inhalation of pathogenic microbes in nursing homes and medical facilities.

Homeland security scientist confirms that natural sunlight kills coronavirus

The best and simplest cure for the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) might just be going outside, as natural sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) rays that Department of Homeland Security (DHS) science and technology advisor William Bryan says easily destroy viruses.

During a recent press briefing at the White House, Bryan explained how UV rays from the sun are powerfully antagonistic against the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), inhibiting its ability to survive, let alone take hold and spread.

A study that looked at the three different types of UV light given off by the sun - A, B, and C rays - found that uvc in particular destroys certain types of genetic material in humans, including viral particles. Based on this, the study found that uvc light can effectively inactivate microbes like the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19).

"Our most striking observation to date is the powerful effect that solar light appears to have on killing the virus, both on surfaces and in the air," Bryan is quoted as saying about the study's findings.

"We've seen a similar effect with both temperature and humidity as well, where increasing the temperature and humidity or both is generally less favorable to the virus," he added.

In an ordinary 70-75 degree (Fahrenheit) environment with 20 percent humidity on a non-porous surface, the half-life for the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) is about 18 hours. Increasing the humidity to 80 percent, however, decreases that half-life to six hours, while adding natural sunlight into the mix decreases it to just two minutes.

This would all suggest that simply being in the sun more can help to reduce the risk of Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) infection and transmission, as viruses simply cannot coexist with natural sunlight.

NEW YORK, NY (Feb. 9, 2018)-Continuous low doses of far ultraviolet C (far-uvc) light can kill airborne flu viruses without harming human tissues, according to a new study at the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). The findings suggest that use of overhead far-uvc light in hospitals, doctors' offices, schools, airports, airplanes, and other public spaces could provide a powerful check on seasonal influenza epidemics, as well as influenza pandemics.

The study was published online today in Scientific Reports.

Scientists have known for decades that broad-spectrum germicidal UV light, which has wavelengths between 200 and 400 nanometers (nm), is highly effective at killing bacteria and viruses by destroying the molecular bonds that hold their DNA together. This conventional UV light is routinely used to decontaminate surgical equipment.

"Unfortunately, conventional germicidal UV light is also a human health hazard and can lead to skin cancer and cataracts, which prevents its use in public spaces," said study leader David J. Brenner, PhD, the Higgins Professor of Radiation Biophysics at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and director of the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia.

Several years ago, Brenner and his colleagues hypothesized that a narrow spectrum of ultraviolet light called far-uvc could kill microbes without damaging healthy tissue. "Far-uvc light has a very limited range and cannot penetrate through the outer dead-cell layer of human skin or the tear layer in the eye, so it's not a human health hazard. But because viruses and bacteria are much smaller than human cells, far-uvc light can reach their DNA and kill them," said Brenner, who is also a professor of environmental health sciences at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND:
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) has been detected in the blood of infected individuals, which may have the potential to contaminate donated blood and plasma-derived products in the event of a future outbreak. Effective methods for inactivating the SARS-CoV in protein solutions are described in this report.

STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS:
Heat, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, octanoic acid, and solvent/detergent (S/D) methods were tested individually for their ability to inactivate SARS-CoV in protein solutions appropriately mimicking blood-derived products. Treated samples were tested for inactivation in a tissue culture growth assay.

RESULTS:
Viral inactivation by heat treatment at 60 degrees C required 15 to 30 minutes to inactivate the SARS-CoV. uvc efficiently inactivated SARS-CoV in 40 minutes, whereas UVA required the addition of psoralen to enhance inactivation of the virus. The presence of bovine serum albumin limited the ability of uvc and UVA to inactivate SARS-CoV and octanoic acid treatment does not reduce the infectivity of SARS-CoV-spiked protein solutions. S/D treatment required 2, 4, and up to 24 hours for Triton X-100, Tween 80, and sodium cholate inactivation, respectively.

CONCLUSION:
Heat, uvc irradiation, and S/D treatments effectively inactivate SARS-CoV, whereas octanoic acid treatment is insufficient for inactivation of the virus.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) pose a serious global threat to humans and their livestock, especially poultry and pigs. This study aimed to investigate how to inactivate IAVs by using different ultraviolet-light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs). We developed sterilization equipment with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) those peak wavelengths were 365?nm (UVA-LED), 310?nm (UVB-LED), and 280?nm (uvc-LED). These UV-LED irradiations decreased dose fluence-dependent plaque-forming units of IAV H1N1 subtype (A/Puerto Rico/8/1934) infected Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells, but the inactivation efficiency of UVA-LED was significantly lower than UVB- and uvc-LED. UV-LED irradiations did not alter hemagglutination titer, but decreased accumulation of intracellular total viral RNA in infected MDCK cells was observed. Additionally, UV-LED irradiations suppressed the accumulation of intracellular mRNA (messenger RNA), vRNA (viral RNA), and cRNA (complementary RNA), as measured by strand-specific RT-PCR. These results suggest that UV-LEDs inhibit host cell replication and transcription of viral RNA. Both UVB- and uvc-LED irradiation decreased focus-forming unit (FFU) of H5N1 subtype (A/Crow/Kyoto/53/2004), a highly pathogenic avian IAV (HPAI), in infected MDCK cells, and the amount of FFU were lower than the H1N1 subtype. From these results, it appears that IAVs may have different sensitivity among the subtypes, and UVB- and uvc-LED may be suitable for HPAI virus inactivation.

The study was published online today in Scientific Reports.

Scientists have known for decades that broad-spectrum germicidal UV light, which has wavelengths between 200 and 400 nanometers (nm), is highly effective at killing bacteria and viruses by destroying the molecular bonds that hold their DNA together. This conventional UV light is routinely used to decontaminate surgical equipment.

"Unfortunately, conventional germicidal UV light is also a human health hazard and can lead to skin cancer and cataracts, which prevents its use in public spaces," said study leader David J. Brenner, PhD, the Higgins Professor of Radiation Biophysics at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and director of the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia.

Several years ago, Brenner and his colleagues hypothesized that a narrow spectrum of ultraviolet light called far-uvc could kill microbes without damaging healthy tissue. "Far-uvc light has a very limited range and cannot penetrate through the outer dead-cell layer of human skin or the tear layer in the eye, so it's not a human health hazard. But because viruses and bacteria are much smaller than human cells, far-uvc light can reach their DNA and kill them," said Brenner, who is also a professor of environmental health sciences at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health.

In their earlier studies, Brenner's team demonstrated that far-uvc light was effective at killing MRSA (methicillin-resistant S. aureus) bacteria, a common cause of surgical wound infections but not harm human or mouse skin.

Influenza virus spreads from person to person mainly through fine liquid droplets, or aerosols, that become airborne when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. The new study was designed to test if far-uvc light could efficiently kill aerosolized influenza virus in the air, in a setting similar to a public space.

In the study, aerosolized H1N1 virus-a common strain of flu virus-was released into a test chamber and exposed to very low doses of 222 nm far-uvc light. A control group of aerosolized virus was not exposed to the uvc light. The far-uvc light efficiently inactivated the flu viruses, with about the same efficiency as conventional germicidal UV light.

"If our results are confirmed in other settings, it follows that the use of overhead low-level far-uvc light in public locations would be a safe and efficient method for limiting the transmission and spread of airborne-mediated microbial diseases, such as influenza and tuberculosis," Brenner said.

At a price of less than $1,000 per lamp-a cost that would surely decrease if the lamps were mass produced-far-uvc lights are relatively inexpensive. "And unlike flu vaccines, far-uvc is likely to be effective against all airborne microbes, even newly emerging strains," Brenner added.

Robots worldwide are bathing surfaces with radiation, sanitizing floors, scanning for fevers, spewing anti-microbial gas and enforcing mask wearing, according to the WSJ. Many of the robots are being put to work in areas where humans haven't tread yet, especially in areas like hospital cleaning.

When the outbreak happened in China, UBTech Robotics, based in Shenzhen, China, developed a program to modify its robots to battle the virus. They attached a disinfectant sprayer to their Atris outdoor robot, which allows it to spray in public places.

They have also modified two other models, the Cruzr and Aimbot, to be able to take people's temperature using thermal cameras. The robot's object-recognition algorithms allow them to also determine whether or not a person is wearing a mask.

Other robots are using UV light in indoor spaces to disinfect. uvc lights have long been used in hospitals to disinfect and sanitize rooms. Since the lights are harmful to humans (but also lethal to microbes), no humans can be in the room while disinfecting is taking place.

uvc lights can clean an entire room in anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on the strength of the bulb being used. They can also reach surfaces often missed by human cleaners and kill airborne microbes - a feature that could come in hand if the coronavirus is spreading by people breathing in particles in indoor spaces.

In the old days, the hospitals did not throw all things away.
In fact, I suspect that the laws requiring that hospitals use something once and then throw it away were lobbied into existence for the companies that make the money selling the equipment. This does not benefit hospitals, or hospital cost.

In the old days, they used something called an autoclave for equipment.
Today, we can sterilize whole hospital surgery rooms with robot lights that move around the room for 90 minutes. Most hospitals have these robot lights now. (pic related)

What we need to do is run a simple test on the clothing. Find out how many minutes of hanging in a room like this it would take to sterilize everything people have to wear from head to toe. You might have to have someone go in to flip the clothing around on their hangers a bit, but, after sterilization, the clothing should be good to go without virus, or bacteria.

Why do the hospitals not use these lights to sterilize the masks and other special clothing in addition to the whole surgery rooms?

Just an thought.
If you could wear the same suit 5-10-15 times, sterilizing between each use, that would increase the medical equipment that is in short supply, until supply catches up with demand.

I was thinking about this line. So far Corona is the biggest normie scare. Necessary it might be, to get our supply chain put back together right, and re-secure the national security, medical security manufacturing chain for sure.

Having looked at the virus now for about 6 weeks, mu semi-conclusion (current theory) is that Asians are being hit harder than the rest of the world, for two reasons I could locate.

1) Asians have the largest number of ACE2 receptors in their body, according to the results of the human genome project. The Covid 19 enters through the ACE2 receptor on the human cells, according to the research.

The Covid 19 is beginning to show the same ADE characteristics that the SARS virus had. ADE stands for Antibody-Dependant Entry.

What is that?
That is when a Corona virus exercises this strange ability most viruses do not have, where when it first enters the body, and the immune system fights it off, the symptoms are MILD, but, the immune system does not fight the virus the second time it meets the virus. (after a vaccine, or a first mild illness).

Instead the immune system becomes an Escort for the virus, and helps it into the healthy cells. Thus: Antibody-Dependant-Entry.

This was figured out in 2014, not very long ago, what, 6 years?
Finally scientists understood why the Spanish flu was mild first time round the world, but, second time around it became a killer. (PIC 1 related)

It looks like Spanish flu was an ADE corona, like SARS.

But because viruses and bacteria are much smaller than human cells, far-uvc light can reach their DNA and kill them," he said.

In their earlier studies, Dr. Brenner's team demonstrated that far-uvc light was effective at killing MRSA (methicillin-resistant S. aureus) bacteria, a common cause of surgical wound infections, but without harming human or mouse skin.

Influenza virus spreads from person to person mainly through fine liquid droplets, or aerosols, that become airborne when people with flu cough, sneeze, or talk. The new study was designed to test if far-uvc light could efficiently kill aerosolized influenza virus in the air, in a setting similar to a public space. In the study, aerosolized H1N1 virus–a common strain of flu virus–was released into a test chamber and exposed to very low doses of 222 nm far-uvc light. A control group of aerosolized virus was not exposed to the uvc light. The far-uvc light efficiently inactivated the flu viruses, with about the same efficiency as conventional germicidal UV light.

Been collecting decontamination methods for a few days.
Hive mind is really cooking it up.

uvc lighting needs special distance/time relation taken into consideration. 25-60 watts. They have units that go in the furnace to clean the air as it goes by. Units for rooms, even hand held flashlights.
Steam cleaning must be 5 seconds or more, but works great.
Cleaning with hydrogen peroxide works. Hospitals using HP steam in empty rooms as well as UV light.

For clothes:
Covid 19 tolerates freezing, but, does not tolerate heat as well.

Temperature of 56C or 132F for 30 minutes will kill it.
So you dry the clothes, and then run for another cycle on HIGH, to do a decontamination for clothing. (This works great for head lice too, had experience with that)

After clothes are finished drying, there is no longer evaporation cooling, so the dryer temp will reach 135 if set on High. You need 30 minutes to decontaminate clothing. Do not know what these temps will do to medical masks or special clothing. (pic related)

Working on what the hospitals are doing most recently for environmental kill of CDiff and MRSA etc. Also works on Corona most times.

Hospitals have really gotten wild with the silver ions, and some copper applications to the stainless steel sinks etc.
Will include this stuff.
