Liberal watchdog Media Matters fired at least a dozen staffers Thursday - and management and some of the laid-off journalists blamed X owner Elon Musk for the cuts.

The billionaire mogul sued the Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization for defamation last November, accusing the company of manufacturing images showing advertisements from major companies alongside posts made by white supremacists and neo-Nazis.

The lawsuit led to federal probes by Republican Attorneys General Ken Paxton of Texas and Andrew Bailey of Missouri into the outlet for possible fraudulent activity by allegedly manipulating data on the site formerly known as Twitter.

Media Matters did not immediately return requests for comment but its president Angelo carusone released a statement on Thursday regarding the layoffs.

"We're confronting a legal assault on multiple fronts and given how rapidly the media landscape is shifting, we need to be extremely intentional about how we allocate resources in order to stay effective," carusone said.

"Nobody does what Media Matters does. So, we're taking this action now to ensure that we are sustainable, sturdy and successful for whatever lies ahead."
Ousted staffers took to social media Thursday to announce their sudden dismissal, with one having particularly harsh words for Musk.

"Bad News: I've been laid off from @mmfa, along with a dozen colleagues. There's a reason far-right billionaires attack Media Matters with armies of lawyers: They know how effective our work is, and it terrifies them (him)," Kat Abughazaleh wrote.

The Post reached out to Musk for comment.

Other longtime Media Matters journalists lamented the layoffs.

"After nearly four years of working at media matters, I got laid off," wrote a staffer named Beatrice. "So if anyone is looking for researchers with video experience, drop a line."
"Journalism milestone achieved (got laid off)," now-former Media Matters writer Bobby Lewis added.

"Layoffs at Media Matters today. Lots of smart people available for jobs now," said Jared Holt, a senior researcher at the Institute of Strategic Dialogue.

At the time of the Musk lawsuit, carusone called it "meritless" and pointed out that "major brands" are "rightly skittish of partnering" with the social media platform.

The suit - which was filed in federal court in Fort Worth, Texas - is still winding through the judicial system.
Media Matters' purge is the latest in a slew of layoffs in the industry - and notably at liberal outlets.

NowThis laid off half of its editorial team in February as part of a "broader initiative to realign our resources and structure to ensure a long-term sustainable business in the evolving media landscape," The Daily Caller first reported.

The Intercept also laid off 15 staffers, including its editor in chief Roger Hodge, on the same day. Last month, The New York Times reported that the news site co-founded by Glenn Greenwald is running low on cash and that it is in danger of closing next year.

Leaked Media Matters Donor List Reveal It Is Funded By Democrat Mega Donors

A leaked list of Media Matters donors shows that the self-proclaimed "media watchdog" is funded by some of America's biggest Democratic donors.

Media Matters, which is not required to disclose its donors due to its designation as a charity, appears to have mistakenly identified its five largest donors in a filing with the New Mexico Attorney General, As first reported by the Washington Free Beacon.

Deborah Simon, daughter of the founder of one of America's largest shopping mall companies, donated $4 million to Media Matters. Simon pledged to "do anything" to defeat Trump in 2020 and has given millions of dollars to Democrat candidates and issues, earning him a spot among the top 50 political donors of the 2022 midterm cycle.

LGBT activist Tim Gill's private foundation, the Gill Foundation, provided just under $3 million to Media Matters. Gill is a pioneer of the use of "dark money" in politics, helping to overturn the Colorado state legislature in 2004 with his Colorado Democracy Alliance, which he co-founded with fellow Democrat donor Patricia Stryker.

The other $1.75 million came from Bain Capital co-chairman Joshua Bekenstein and his wife, Anita. The couple have given millions of dollars to Democratic causes and were also among the top 50 politica

Media Matters received another $1.9 million from the Stephen Silberstein Foundation, a leftist organization that has funded other progressive organizations including the Center for American Progress, Amnesty International, and People for the American Way.

Media Matters raised a total of $16.5 million in 2022, and the organization's executives enjoyed hefty salaries, with president Angelo carusone receiving $406,000 and founder David Brock receiving $270,000, as well as $189,000 from a deferred compensation plan. .

But while Media Matters is funded by Democrat mega-donors and organizes advertiser boycotts against conservatives, it is portrayed as an objective media watchdog, with some news outlets referring to the organization as a "media watchdog." Have neglected to mention its partisan ties.

Media Matters is currently facing investigation by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey. We could not replicate Media Matters' finding of corporate ads placed near neo-Nazi and white supremacist content
On Thursday, Media Matters For America published an article alleging that the social media platform X has been placing ads for major companies next to pro-Nazi content. "As X owner Elon Musk continues his descent into white nationalist and antisemitic conspiracy theories," wrote Media Matters reporter Eric Hananoki, "his social media platform has been placing ads for major brands like Apple, Bravo (NBCUniversal), IBM, Oracle, and Xfinity (Comcast) next to content that touts Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party."
In response, major companies, including Disney, Warner Bros, Comcast, IBM, and Apple, have pulled ads from X in a blow to the company's revenue.
However, according to the X Safety team, Media Matters' report was done by making a fake X account and then curating posts and ads to manipulate the account's timeline. "These contrived experiences could be applied to any platform," X argues.
X's analytics suggest that Media Matters repeatedly refreshed the timeline of the account it created to cause X to generate ads near hateful posts. The account, X says, saw thirteen times the number of ads a median X user sees.
According to X, in at least one instance, the Media Matters author was the only user to see a specific ad placement. "Of the 5.5 billion ad impressions on X that day, less than 50 total ad impressions were served against all of the organic content featured in the Media Matters article," X Safety wrote.
We should not blindly trust X's defense of its ad policy. X obviously has a bias in how it measures its trust and safety. And so Public attempted to reproduce Media Matters' methods to see if we found ads next to the content in question. We created an account and followed eleven of the neo-Nazi accounts in Media Matters' report starting yesterday, November 19.
After refreshing both X's "For You" page and "Following" page more than ten times and scrolling through the timeline each time, we did not observe ads next to white nationalist or pro-Nazi content.
We followed more extremist accounts and repeated this process after following thirty accounts. Still, we did not find ads on the timeline. We also opened each account's page and did not observe ads there. Nor did we find ads under the replies to their posts.
Media Matters did not respond to our inquiry about the exact methods it used for its report.
It's possible that Public's methods did not exactly replicate Media Matters' or that our account was too new to see ads. It's also possible that X has already changed its ad policy in response to Media Matters, or there are fewer ads on the platform now that major advertisers have left.
In any case, both Public's test and X's analysis suggest that the ad incidents Media Matters found were very rare.
Despite the lack of verified evidence behind Media Matters' claims, its tactics are highly effective. For companies, any association with racism or Nazi ideology is a major liability and they are easily swayed to pull advertising.
In 2020, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), along with other advocacy organizations, got hundreds of companies to boycott Facebook, leading the platform to remove content that groups that ADL disliked. In 2017, another advertiser boycott forced YouTube to ramp up its censorship.
And yet the head of Media Matters, Angelo carusone, has himself made prejudicial remarks. He wrote, publicly, on a blog, that his boyfriend was "adorable... despite his jewry," and that a friend leaned conservative "as a result of his possession of several bags of Jewish gold." carusone wrote "lighten up Japs" about the Japanese. And he wrote dismissively of "trannies."
carusone told the Washington Post, which rushed to his defense, "It's true: I wrote some gross things on my blog while I was in college. A few posts parodying living my life as if I were a self-loathing, bigoted Limbaugh right-winger. And every time Media Matters takes some meaningful action, some awful people bring it up to try to stop us.
Left's concerns with X have nothing to do with antisemitism and everything to do with its need to control the information voters receive.
What, then, is going on here, exactly? Why is Media Matters leading a disinformation campaign and advertiser boycott against Elon Musk's X? Who is Media Matters, exactly?And what's its real agenda?

It turns out that Media Matters President Angelo carusone wrote super antisemitic blog posts in the early 2000s, which were uncovered by the Daily Caller's Peter Hasson in 2019, and have been making the rounds of late given the Musk controversy.

In one blog post titled "Tranny Paradise," the future Media Matters president went on a lengthy diatribe against a 'tranny-loving author.'

In another post that same month, carusone suggested in response to a male basketball coach's alleged sexual and physical abuse of female players; "lighten up Japs"

In an October 2005 post, carusone said of his boyfriend, "despite his jewry, you KNOW he's adorable."

In another post, he suggested that his Jewish boyfriend only leaned conservative "as a result of his possession of several bags of Jewish gold."

We know, we know - who cares, right?

The point is that carusone is a massive, virtue-signaling hypocritefor suggesting that Musk was antisemitic for agreeing with a defensible observation, while he himself broke several 'cardinal rules' of being a liberal wokescold.

As even the Washington Post noted at the time of the Caller article, "carusone's postings are indeed offensive, and if he's going to serve as president of an organization renowned for unearthing overlooked and objectionable comments from people's past, he deserves to be called out on his own transgressions."

Ah yes, just parody.

The decision to give a platform to Trump, a man who has something of a track record for lying, was widely criticized before the event. Angelo carusone, chief executive of Media Matters for America, a progressive watchdog, described the town hall as a "transparent attempt to goose their ratings", while Keith Olbermann, a former MSNBC host, criticized Chris Licht, who took over from Jeff Zucker as chief executive of CNN in 2022.

"I think we can say Chris Licht's conversion of CNN into a political and journalistic whorehouse is complete," Olbermann had said.

The looming town hall had led to an incongruous viewing experience throughout Wednesday, particularly in light of a legal finding that Trump sexually abused Carroll in 1996.

On Wednesday morning, Carroll, who the New York jury found was sexually abused in a New York department store changing room 27 years ago, was interviewed by CNN.

The network aired clips of the interview throughout the day, with a chyron hovering over the footage promoting Trump's town hall appearance.

On Tuesday, CNN had run a story about Liz Cheney, a former Republican congresswoman and critic of Trump.

"New Liz Cheney ad: Trump 'Aarisk America can never take again,'" read the CNN chyron. Right there, on the corner of the screen, was a promotion for the Trump town hall.

There had been clues, too, about the direction of the town hall in the hour before it began. In handing airtime to Trump, CNN apparently felt it had to host some of the former president's acolytes, perhaps in the interest of balance.

That led to Wolf Blitzer, a CNN veteran, bringing on JD Vance, a Republican senator from Ohio who has dabbled in the racist "great replacement" conspiracy theory.

Asked what Trump needed to do to win undecided voters, Vance said, with a straight face: "Trump has the ability to appeal across the aisles."

How Tucker Carlson took fringe conspiracy theories to a mass audience

Until his abrupt ouster on Monday, Tucker Carlson used his primetime Fox News show - the most-watched hour on cable news - to inject a dark strain of conspiracy-mongering into Republican politics.

He's railed against immigration, claiming "it makes our own country poorer, and dirtier, and more divided."

He's called white supremacy a "hoax" and asserted hate speech is "a made-up category designed to gut the First Amendment and shut you up."

As Fox News's "tentpole," drawing around 3 million viewers a night, Carlson's show "has been both a source of that kind of nationalist, populist conservatism that Donald Trump embodied, but it's also been a clearinghouse for conspiracies," said Nicole Hemmer, a history professor at Vanderbilt University who studies conservative media.

Many of the false narratives Carlson promoted were part of the "great replacement" conspiracy theory, the racist fiction that non-white people are being brought into the U.S. to replace white voters.

The theory was once considered the fringe territory of white nationalists. But "thanks to Tucker Carlson, this kind of dreck that you would normally only see on far-right forums and online spaces had a primetime audience on cable news every night," said Melissa Ryan of CARD Strategies, which tracks disinformation and extremism online.

Carlson's show gave many Fox News viewers what they wanted, she said, including false claims about the 2020 election, COVID vaccines and the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, as well as smears against gay and transgender people and Russian propaganda about fictitious Ukrainian biolabs.

Carlson and the '4chan to Fox to Trump pipeline'

"Tucker is a chameleon," Ryan said. "He's very good at reading the room and figuring out where the right-wing base is at and adapting to give them as much red meat as they want."

During Trump's presidency, a "4chan to Fox to Trump pipeline" emerged, Ryan said. In one notorious example, a conspiracy theory was circulating on the anonymous message board falsely claiming South Africa was engaging in a genocide against white farmers.

"Tucker Carlson talked about it extensively on the air … and eventually Trump tweets about it and says that the United States is going to do something about it," she said. "It's sort of insane to think about this content from these forums reaching the president of the United States, and him saying, 'Oh, we're going to act,' we're going to do something about what is a debunked, not true conspiracy theory."

Carlson also gave a platform to controversial figures who shared his conspiratorial worldview - elevating their profiles as well.

"If you had been listening to, say, Alex Jones on Infowars, you would have gotten this material, say, three months before Tucker Carlson got to it," Hemmer said. "But it's showing up on Fox News, which was treated by other news organizations as a legitimate journalistic organization that has millions of more viewers and has viewers who haven't already been radicalized into these conspiracies. That makes Carlson so much more powerful and influential in the broader conservative movement."

Delivering for an audience primed for conspiracy theories

While his most inflammatory screeds sent some big-name advertisers fleeing, Carlson delivered ratings - the primary currency at Fox News.

"Fox News is also very sensitive to what their audience wants and what their audience is saying," Hemmer said. "As that audience has gotten more extreme, as conservative voters and activists have moved even further to the right or have embraced conspiratorial thinking, they've embraced media that that give them that," Hemmer said.

Right-wing upstarts like Newsmax and Rumble have expanded the universe of conservative media. But unlike its newer rivals, Fox News still has the reach of a mainstream news outlet.

So when it gives time to extremist conspiracy theories like the great replacement, that reverberates beyond its airwaves.

"Tucker took something that really was relegated to the fringes - it's a white nationalist conspiracy theory - and he made it not just a part of his show, but then a broader part of Fox News's culture, and then, by extension, Republican politics," said Angelo carusone, president of liberal watchdog Media Matters for America. "It really became acceptable to embrace that idea."

From 4chan to international politics, a bug-eating conspiracy theory goes mainstream

Carlson's final show ended with a promotion for his latest streaming special, called, "Let Them Eat Bugs." In it, he claims that global elites - another staple of Carlson's conspiracies, alongside racial grievance - are trying to force people to replace meat with insects.

"It's part of a larger agenda," Carlson warned.

TikTok Lobbyists Visited White House at Least 40 Times in Past Year

Visits show TikTok's extensive clout inside the Biden administration

Executives at high-powered firms hired by TikTok for lobbying and strategic consulting visited the White House at least 40 times in the past year, according to official White House visitor records.

The Chinese social media platform and its parent company, ByteDance, are mounting a massive public relations blitz as lawmakers are seeking to ban the app due to national security, espionage, and data privacy concerns. ByteDance and TikTok have spent $13 million on federal lobbying since 2019 and hired heavyweight firms such as influential Democratic public relations shop SKDK.

Those hired guns have had the ear of the White House, the records show. Former Louisiana Democratic senator John Breaux, a TikTok lobbyist at Crossroads Strategies, visited the White House at least three times last year, most recently for an event on Dec. 21. Stephanie Leger Short, another TikTok lobbyist who works with Breaux, attended a June 23 meeting with White House adviser Mitch Landrieu. Breaux also met with White House official John Podesta last November.

Other visitors included former Tennessee Democratic congressman Barton Gordon, a ByteDance lobbyist who attended White House events on Dec. 1 and last September, and Lauren Aronson, a ByteDance lobbyist who visited twice in September.

None of the lobbyists and firms responded to requests for comment. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

While it's unclear if TikTok was discussed during any of the visits-which included a mix of large events and small private meetings-the number of contacts shows the extensive clout of TikTok's growing lobbying network inside the White House.

Former Democratic congressman Joseph Crowley (N.Y.)-who, Politico reported, helped arrange meetings for TikTok on Capitol Hill last month-is also listed at least four times in the 2022 visitors' logs. Crowley met with presidential special assistant John McCarthy in August and White House adviser Mariana Adame in September, according to records.

Jamal Brown, a former spokesman for the Biden campaign who was hired by TikTok in November, also made numerous visits in June, August, and December. Paul Thornell, a ByteDance lobbyist with Mehlman Consulting, appeared in the visitors' logs at least three times last year.

Executives from SKDK, a well-connected Democratic public affairs firm that was reportedly hired by TikTok in recent months, were frequent White House guests as well. Hilary Rosen, a partner at the firm, visited at least five times since last June, according to records.

SKDK chief executive Douglass Thornell and firm partner Oren Shur met with White House official Caitlin Meloski, a special assistant to the National Economic Council, on Dec. 20, the Washington Free Beacon previously reported. Pia carusone, managing director at SKDK, visited three times in November and December.

While the Biden administration recently backed a bill that was framed as a TikTok "ban," some China hawks slammed the legislation as a smokescreen that doesn't actually require the government to take any action against the social media app.

Critics say the Biden administration has been reluctant to take on TikTok because the social media app is so valuable to Democratic political campaigns-and could boost the Biden campaign's outreach to young progressives in the 2024 presidential election. Biden commerce secretary Gina Raimondo recently argued that Democrats could "lose every voter under 35, forever," if TikTok is banned.

"If administration officials appear highly susceptible to TikTok's lobbying efforts, it's probably because they're highly dependent on the app for political reasons," said Michael Sobolik, a China expert at the American Foreign Policy Council. "The Biden administration claims to be serious about TikTok, but the facts suggest otherwise."

"Democratic operatives are already planning to push Biden's reelection agenda on the Chinese-controlled app," he added.

Fox News hit with election complaint

Media Matters claims Rupert Murdoch's network gave in-kind contributions to Republicans in 2020

Media Matters for America has filed a Federal Election Commission complaint against Fox News, claiming the cable network has provided an illegal contribution to the Republican Party in the 2020 US election. MMFA's head talked up the complaint on Monday, as Fox aired previously unavailable footage of the January 6 Capitol riot.

Fox operates "more like a partisan operation than a news network," Angelo carusone told Democracy Now! on Monday evening, adding he anticipated "a lot more" FEC complaints going forward.

The MMFA is basing its complaint on one of the documents produced in the ongoing defamation lawsuit against the cable network by Dominion Voting Systems, which is seeking $1.6 billion in damages. According to the discovery in that trial, Fox owner Rupert Murdoch gave then-President Donald Trump's son-in-law and adviser, Jared Kushner, "confidential information" about a campaign ad for Democrat Joe Biden.

MMFA is arguing that the FEC "press exemption" would not apply in this case, and that Murdoch's act amounts to "an illegal corporate in-kind contribution."

"If you try to get around that disclosure law... by giving something that is the equivalent of money, that you would need to spend money on, or that could be considered something of value for a political campaign, you're either not supposed to do it or it's supposed to be disclosed," carusone told Democracy Now!

carusone's interview coincided with Fox News showing video from the 2021 riot at the US Capitol, which the new House Speaker Kevin McCarthy - a California Republican - provided to Tucker Carlson, the most-watched evening news host in the US. The footage Carlson aired directly contradicted the narratives about the Capitol "insurrection" put forth by Biden and the Democrats. MMFA has gone after Carlson numerous times, accusing him of everything from "election denial" to racism.

The Republican National Committee has previously complained to the FEC that Twitter had given an in-kind contribution to the Democrats in the 2020 election, by censoring the New York Post's factually true story about Hunter Biden's laptop. Biden, the Democrats and MMFA denounced the report - falsely, as it turned out - as "Russian disinformation." The RNC filed their claim in October 2020, just weeks before the election. The FEC rejected it, without explanation, in September 2021.

The co-founder and public face of Accountable Tech is Jesse Lehrich, who was theforeign policy spokesperson for Hillary Clinton'sdefeated 2016 presidential campaign. In July of 2017, Lehrich acknowledged to Business Insider that while working for Clinton, he had "sound[ed] the alarm on these Kremlin connections" tying Moscow to the former secretary of state's Republican opponent, "and we knew more shoes would drop." In reality, the alleged links between Donald Trump and Russia that Lehrich peddled to the media turned out to either be trivial or false.

Evidently, the reported $400 million that Mark Zuckerberg shelled out to Democratic Party-supported election-related causes, like targeted get-out-the-vote "voter education" and "fair balloting," was not enough to erase the company's refusal to kick Trump off the site during the election-which in turn recalled the company's original sin of allowing itself to be used as a conduit by Vladimir Putin, a being of godlike power, when he mesmerized helpless and stupid American voters into electing Trump in 2016. As advertisers prepare to negotiate forward-looking contracts with Twitter this week during the NewFronts conference, they can preemptively protect themselves from any damage to their brands resulting from Musk's eventual takeover, said Angelo carusone, CEO of Media Matters for America, one of the organizations behind the letter.

Advertisers should also require Twitter to continue to support academic research based on the company's data and implement protections to make sure spammers and other "bad actors" cannot benefit from Musk's proposal to "open-source" Twitter's algorithm, the letter said.
As Musk prepares to take control of one of the world's most influential tech platforms, Tuesday's letter from civil society groups could find a receptive audience. Last week, according to the Financial Times, Twitter wrote a message to advertisers addressing perceived nervousness about the Musk deal - and reassuring brands that Twitter will continue to be a safe place to advertise.
Even if Musk ultimately decides against undoing Twitter's policies, his sole ownership of the company highlights his unaccountable power, said Nicole Gill, co-founder and executive director of Accountable Tech. Gill added that because Musk has sought to pay for Twitter with loans against Tesla and Twitter shares, he could be more vulnerable to downturns in Twitter's business than he may let on. ("I don't care about the economics at all," Musk has said of Twitter's business.)

But the single biggest factor appears to have been the QAnon crackdown on Facebook and Twitter. Despite well-documented mistakes that revealed spotty enforcement, the banishment largely appears to have worked. It is more difficult to come across blatant QAnon accounts on mainstream social media sites these days, at least from the publicly available data that does not include, for instance, hidden Facebook groups and private messages.
While QAnon groups, pages and core accounts may be gone, many of their supporters remain on the big platforms - only now they're camouflaging their language and watering down the most extreme tenets of QAnon to make them more palatable.
"There was a very, very explicit effort within the QAnon community to to camouflage their language," said Angelo carusone, the president and CEO of Media Matters, a liberal research group that has followed QAnon's rise. "So they stopped using a lot of the codes, the triggers, the keywords that were eliciting the kinds of enforcement actions against them."
Other dodges may have also helped. Rather than parroting Q slogans, for instance, for a while earlier this year supporters would type three asterisks next to their name to signal adherence to the conspiracy theory. (That's a nod to former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn, a three-star general).
Facebook says it has removed about 3,300 pages, 10,500 groups, 510 events, 18,300 Facebook profiles and 27,300 Instagram accounts for violating its policy against QAnon. "We continue to consult with experts and improve our enforcement in response to how harm evolves, including by recidivist groups," the company said in a statement.
But the social giant will still cut individuals posting about QAnon slack, citing experts who warn that banning individual Q adherents "may lead to further social isolation and danger," the company said. Facebook's policies and response to QAnon continue to evolve. Since last August, the company says it has added dozens of new terms as the movement and its language has evolved.
Twitter, meanwhile, says it has consistently taken action against activity that could lead to offline harm. After the Jan. 6 insurrection, the company began permanently suspending thousands of accounts that it said were "primarily dedicated" to sharing dangerous QAnon material. Twitter said it has suspended 150,000 such accounts to date. Like Facebook, the company says its response is also evolving.
But the crackdown may have come too late. carusone, for instance, noted that Facebook banned QAnon groups tied to violence six weeks before it banned QAnon more broadly. That effectively gave followers notice to regroup, camouflage and move to different platforms.
"If there were ever a time for a social media company to take a stand on QAnon content, it would have been like months ago, years ago," DFRLabs' Rizzuto said.

Experts are warning some right-wing extremists may appear at rallies in Washington, D.C., on Saturday in support of President Donald Trump, though it's unclear how many people will attend.

Multiple events with names including Million MAGA March, Stop the Steal and March for Trump are set to occur at Freedom Plaza around noon Saturday, according to several social media posts. As of Tuesday, there were at least 24 Facebook events using one or both terms, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Metropolitan Police Department say they're monitoring the events, but would not provide a crowd estimate. At least one counter-protest is planned by a leftist group.

Organizers are promoting the event as a way to protest "voter fraud," to "show support for our President" and "demand a free and fair election," according to the Anti-Defamation League. Trump has refused to concede and leveled baseless allegations of voter fraud to falsely claim the election was stolen from him.

Facebook previously shut down a fast-growing pro-Trump "Stop the Steal" group that was being used to organize protests over "worrying calls for violence."

Eventbrite took down several of event pages connected to these rallies and refunded tickets. A spokesperson said the site prohibits events, content or creators that share potentially harmful misinformation or contribute to the risk of violence.

Other groups including white nationalists and armed extremist groups then announced their intent to join, carusone said. Proud Boys chairman Enrique Tarrio announced his group would attend and the Oath Keepers, an anti-government extremist group, issued a call for volunteers to attend the event with their leader, Stewart Rhodes, according to the ADL.

"It is an ad hoc sort of combination of extremists, of grifters and some online right wing media figures that are trying to hope something sparks," carusone said. "Essentially as if an online comment troll just decided to come to life."

carusone said that while he does not expect the rally will draw a massive crowd, he is concerned that groups like the Proud Boys may try to antagonize counter protesters in order to provoke a fight.

TikTok is toughening its stance against the QAnon conspiracy theory, expanding its ban to all content or accounts that promote videos advancing baseless ideas from the far-right online movement.

The action hardens the video-sharing app's previous enforcement against QAnon that targeted specific hashtags on the app that QAnon supporters have used to spread unfounded theories. Now, users that share QAnon-related content on TikTok will have their accounts deleted from the app.

"Content and accounts that promote QAnon violate our disinformation policy and we remove them from our platform," a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement to NPR. "We've also taken significant steps to make this content harder to find across search and hashtags by redirecting associated terms to our Community Guidelines."

TikTok's sweeping action against QAnon comes just as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other technology giants have announced bans on content from the Trump-supporting conspiracy theory. QAnon started in October 2017 and has amassed an enormous following online thanks largely to social media companies.

"There should be recognition of a thing that is good and significant, even if it's long overdue," said Angelo carusone, president of the liberal nonprofit watchdog group Media Matters for America. "TikTok is recognizing that by the nature of the QAnon movement, you can't just get rid of their communities, the content itself is the problem."

Earlier this month, Media Matters identified more than a dozen hashtags TikTokkers used to spread QAnon conspiracy theories about President Trump's positive coronavirus test, false beliefs about Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and videos questioning the reality of the pandemic.

"We're talking about hundreds of millions of video views just for a limited segment of QAnon communities that we identified," carusone said.

TikTok, which has 100 million monthly active users in the U.S., made its expanded ban against QAnon quietly in a statement to Media Matters, where it garnered little attention. A TikTok spokesperson confirmed the policy to NPR on Saturday.

Hany Farid, a UC Berkeley computer science professor who is a member of TikTok's committee of outside content moderation experts, said there is tension within social networks over how to respond to misinformation without also amplifying the underlying theories.

"When you ban it, you give it credibility. You give it attention," Farid told NPR.

"But the movement got big enough and dangerous enough that people were looking at the landscape and saying, 'Yeah, this is completely out of control,' " he said. "Were they slow to do it? Probably. But platforms get criticized when they act too quickly. So there is a dilemma there."

TikTok uses a mix of artificial intelligence and thousands of human content moderators to try to curb troubling content. The Chinese-owned app is best-known for viral dance challenges and comedic performances.

According to TikTok's Community Guidelines, misinformation that "causes harm to individuals, our community or the larger public" is prohibited on the site, including medical misinformation, which QAnon has engaged in by pushing false notions about the deadly coronavirus.

carusone of Media Matters said misinformation accounts on TikTok have been clever about avoiding detection by hijacking otherwise-benign hashtags, or creating new hashtags that are written slightly in code, among other strategies to evade efforts to curb the content.

"The test of this policy will be how much it affects the creation and germination of new QAnon content on TikTok," carusone said. "If you know your video is going to be eliminated before it has a chance to spread, you're less likely to spend time polluting the TikTok pool."

The future of TikTok in the U.S. remains uncertain. A federal judge last month temporarily halted a Trump administration attempt to shut down the app. But a separate order from the White House for TikTok to divest from its Beijing owner or cease operations remains in place, with a deadline of Nov. 12 for TikTok to find an American buyer or close down its U.S. operations.

Trump officials cite national security concerns with TikTok's China-based corporate owner, ByteDance, but TikTok has long dismissed the effort as an crusade to score political points. The company says U.S. user data is controlled by an American-led team and that the Chinese government has never requested access to the data.

Angelo carusone, President of Media Matters for America, which named Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg the misinformer of the year in 2017, issued the following statement:

Facebook helped the QAnon community grow exponentially - and refused to take appropriate action earlier this year when it would have mattered. Then, in a publicity stunt a few weeks ago, Facebook announced a crackdown would come, one that gave the QAnon community ample time to change their names, page descriptions and hashtags in order to flout Facebook's enforcement.

In effect, Facebook has made the problem worse: first by helping the QAnon community grow exponentially, then by helping them hide.

So the big question here is not what is Facebook doing about QAnon: It is what is Facebook doing about all the QAnon content and QAnon communities that have made minor changes to hashtags and keywords to work around Facebook's rules in order to promote essentially the same dangerous misinformation.

Unless Facebook lays out a more robust and proactive plan, all it is doing with this action is giving QAnon content a chance to rebrand on its platform.

Facebook has had an ongoing problem managing the spread of the QAnon conspiracy theory on the platform. The damage has been done – a Media Matters analysis found that some of the largest public QAnon groups on Facebook experienced 101% growth since March (and continued to grow at disproportionately high rates even after Facebook's supposed crackdown in August).

Additionally, even though the company promised in August to remove QAnon groups that "discuss potential violence," Facebook either was not able to or refused to successfully enforce this policy. Media Matters reporting shows that many QAnon-affiliated Facebook groups explicitly violating the August policy have been just as active as ever – and they have continued to gain members in recent months. Recently, QAnon conspiracy theories took off after President Donald Trump's COVID-19 diagnosis.

As a rhetorical tactic, the effect of calling someone a pedophile cannot be overestimated: Much like conspiracy theories themselves, whose power lies in the fact that they can neither be proven nor disproven, there is virtually no way to determine whether someone is, in fact, sexually attracted to children. There may be no evidence to support the fact that a former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model is involved in an underage child sex trafficking ring, but there is also no evidence to refute it, only adding fuel to those who cannot be swayed either way. Worse still, there are no effective defenses against such vile allegations; to defend oneself against the accusation of pedophilia, or to point out the hysterical nature of such baseless claims is to invite accusations of attempting to normalize it.

Real-life allegations of child sex rings, such as the Jeffrey Epstein case, only serve to bolster the argument that such evil is widespread, and patriots must take it upon themselves to ferret it out from the shadows. "Epstein added fuel to the fire, and it made it much more explicitly political and partisan," says carusone. "It allowed for [the far-right] to say, 'look at all these Democrats, he was a donor, oh and by the way so was Weinstein.'"

The politically charged nature of the discussion surrounding Cuties has made it impossible to wade into any dialogue on the film without being perceived as taking a "side" on the issue one way or the other. Indeed, when I reached out to various organizations that address child sexual abuse and exploitation for this piece, most declined to comment. "Because of the political/politicized nature of this issue, we don't feel that we can comment," a spokesperson for one of these organizations told me, underscoring the highly precarious nature of the current discourse.

Against the backdrop of a once-in-a-century health crisis and a movement of marginalized people calling for massive social change, with the world shifting beneath our feet, it's understandable the #SaveTheChildren mentality would thrive during the pandemic. "Today you have a very large number of disempowered people all across the political spectrum, but especially on the right because you feel like you are constantly maligned. They're feeling not just powerless, but vilified," says carusone. "Think about how awesome it feels to go up to somebody like Tom Hanks or Chrissy Teigen or big brands like Wayfair and just with a couple tweets have them running and scrambling. That just feels good." In this context, calling someone a pedophile is the far-right equivalent of a rejected teenage boy calling a girl a slut: a way for people on the right to reclaim power at a moment when they feel it rapidly slipping away, while also retaining a moral high ground.

And during a rally in Portland, Oregon last week, in which far-right Proud Boys were captured on camera beating BLM protesters, a man is heard jeering: "Another Joe Biden pedophile right here. He'll touch another little boy like that," to a naked man who is being sprayed with a fire extinguisher. The far-right's quest to ferret out this secret cabal of pedophiles has resulted in not just online harassment and finger-pointing, as was the case with Cuties, but in real-world violence: in Texas, for instance, a QAnon supporter was recently arrested for using her car to attack two strangers she mistakenly believed to be child molesters.

Accusations of pedophilia are "not new," says Angelo carusone, president and CEO of Media Matters for America, a nonprofit watchdog organization focused on right-wing media. The tactic has an extensive history that traces all the way back to medieval anti-Semitic allegations of blood libel to the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, in which parents en masse accused day care centers and teachers of engaging in ritualized Satanic sexual abuse. "It happens oftentimes when there's a lot of sweeping change happening in society," says carusone, drawing parallels to the tumult of the Reagan years as having set the stage for the Satanic panic.

The media also plays a central role in perpetuating the hysteria cycle off which phenomena like the Satanic panic feed, says carusone; this was also the case with Cuties and similar controversies such as the outrage generated by a Trolls doll accused by conspiracy theorists of promoting child grooming, both of which were covered fairly uncritically by many news outlets. Newsweek, for instance, dutifully wrote up a statement from the National Center on Sexual Exploitation decrying Cuties, without noting the organization's roots as a religious right-wing group.

One such group, with over 90,000 members, featured memes about crystal healing, palmistry and alien technology interspersed with QAnon-related claims about paedophilia and Covid-19 denialism.

"If you post a QAnon meme to one of these groups, they can be distributed far and wide," said Mr carusone.

A newer breed of QAnon believer has emerged from these communities, said Joe Ondrak, senior researcher at Logically, a counter-misinformation organisation, which he dubs "lower-case q". Rather than the political dimension of the conspiracy theory, they are primarily focused on child sex-trafficking claims - one of the other original tenets of QAnon.

"They're all about the narrative itself - they're not big on personalities except when it comes to the bad guys," he said. "It's not the Trump cult for them - it's about saving kids from this shadowy cabal.

After the shutdowns

Facebook's actions succeeded in removing some of the biggest accounts from the platform, including QAnon News and Updates - the largest group on the site, with 200,000 members at its peak. But a range of groups from a wide variety of communities have since absorbed the newly displaced believers.

As of September 9, a search for "QAnon" on Facebook yielded 11 groups with 10,000 or more members, compared with 30 in July. One, a private group called QAnon Update Group, has more than 39,000 likes and predates the first QAnon post, with previous names referring to extraterrestrials, popular video games and a Vietnamese marketplace.

Meanwhile members of the closed QAnon groups have used a range of tactics to remain on the platform and continue to spread their message. Some have migrated to other areas, said Angelo carusone, president of Media Matters for America, targeting related communities such as anti-mask groups or remnants of the Tea Party, to maintain their network on the platform.

Gun rights activist Lauren Boebert's upset win over Scott Tipton (R) in Colorado this week is the latest in a string of victories for candidates who have publicly expressed support for the QAnon conspiracy theory.

At least eight such candidates for the House will appear on general election ballots this fall, while another two are headed for runoffs. While the majority of them are running long shot campaigns in uncompetitive districts, at least two are currently favored to win, including Boebert.

Meanwhile, Republican Jo Rae Perkins- who has supported QAnon, walked the support back, then committed again - is running against Sen. Jeff Merkley (D) in the safe blue state of Oregon.

The Republican establishment has largely avoided discussing QAnon so far, even as the once-fringe theory continues to pick up credibility from candidates.

"They're sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place because the more the core of the Republican Party tries to disassociate from it, the more it actually validates the core tenants of what QAnon stands for," said Angelo carusone, president of the liberal media watchdog group Media Matters for America, which has been tracking mentions of QAnon by candidates.

The QAnon theory posits President Trump and the military are working together to expose a shadowy cabal of figures in media, entertainment and politics that currently control the world.

The movement gets its cues on the progress of that mission from Q, a mysterious figure who posts cryptic messages on image boards including 4chan, 8chan and 8kun.

Eric Swalwell and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton comparing Russian meddling and the Mueller report to the terror attacks on New York. TPM also accused the right of being "hysterical" over Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar's description of 9/11 as "some people did something." In one 2005 blog post resurfaced by The Daily Caller, carusone ranted about a Bangladeshi man who was robbed by "a gang of transvestites," appearing to be offended that the group was described as "attractive," according to screenshots published by the outlet.

That same year, carusone also commented on a male basketball coach who was accused of sexually and physically abusing his female players. carusone dismissed the allegations against the coach in Japan using an ethnic slur.

carusone also appeared to praise former Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), a former member of the Ku Klux Klan, in one post. He separately wrote that his boyfriend was adorable, "despite his jewry."

Media Matters did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The resurfaced posts came days after carusone's company published offensive comments previously made by Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Carlson said Sunday that he wouldn't apologize for a series of derogatory comments he made on the "Bubba the Love Sponge" radio program between 2006 and 2011.

Media Matters did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Media Matters is known as a tax-exempt lobbying organization which has aimed to silence many conservative media voices. carusone has led numerous boycott attempts but famously opted against taking action after hateful rhetoric from MSNBC host Joy Reid's pre-fame blog was unearthed.

In addition to carusone's old comments making headlines, Carlson also has hit Media Matters over its non-profit status.

"In its original tax application to the IRS, Media Matters claimed that the American news media were dominated by a pro-Christian bias and that they were needed to balance it. Despite the obvious absurdity of this claim, the group received non-profit status. It has been violating the terms of that status ever since," Carlson said on Tuesday night.
