Sam Altman reinstated to OpenAI board after investigation
https://thehill.com/policy/technology/4520331-sam-altman-reinstated-to-openai-board-after-investigation
Sam Altman, the CEO of artificial intelligence (AI) company OpenAI, was reinstated to its board of directors following an investigation Friday.
"We have unanimously concluded that Sam and [president of OpenAI Greg Brockman] are the right leaders for OpenAI," Bret Taylor, chair of the OpenAI board, said in a Friday blog post.
Altman was fired and quickly rehired as CEO of OpenAI and also booted from its board in a notable debacle in November. The company also announced that it would form a new board in the wake of the incident.
In its investigation into the incident, law firm WilmerHale "found that the prior Board's decision did not arise out of concerns regarding product safety or security, the pace of development, OpenAI's finances, or its statements to investors, customers, or business partners," OpenAI said in the blog post.
"Instead, it was a consequence of a breakdown in the relationship and loss of trust between the prior Board and Mr. Altman," the blog post reads. "WilmerHale found the prior Board implemented its decision on an abridged timeframe, without advance notice to key stakeholders, and without a full inquiry or an opportunity for Mr. Altman to address the prior Board's concerns."
Altman told reporters that he was "pleased this whole thing is over," according to The Associated Press.
Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Nicole Seligman, former executive vice president and general counsel of Sony and president of Sony Entertainment and Fidji Simo, CEO and Chair of Instacart, were also all announced as new board members in the blog post.
"The new members have experience in leading global organizations and navigating complex regulatory environments, including backgrounds in technology, nonprofit and board governance," OpenAI said.

15 global business, government, and public health leaders will be players in the 3.5-hour simulation exercise. Players will be presented with a pandemic scenario that highlights unresolved real-world policy and economic isSues that could be solved with sufficient political will, financial investment, and attention now and in the future.
"We recognize that pandemics can have more than just health consequences, they can cause severe cascading economic and societal consequences," said Eric Toner, MD, a senior associate at the Center and Event 201 project lead. "Neither the public sector nor the private sector alone can adequately respond to a severe pandemic; they must work together. That's our goal for Event 201, and why an exercise of this kind is such a valuable and compelling way to help leaders understand the decisions needed to prevent, prepare for, and respond to biological threats."
Recent economic studies show that pandemics will be the cause of an average annual economic loss of 0.7% of global GDP-or $570 billion. The players' responses to the scenario will illuminate challenges to essential cooperation among industry, national governments, key international institutions, and civil society needed to avoid the catastrophic consequences that could arise from a pandemic of this nature.
"Outbreaks of infectious disease may be inevitable, but the economic damage they cause is not," explained Ryan Morhard, the project lead for Global Health and Healthcare Industries at the World Economic Forum. "While most of the authority rests with the public sector, most of the resources and capabilities exist in the private sector. Sustained attention from a broad public-private coalition is needed in advance of a severe pandemic to minimize economic and societal consequences."
Like the Center's 3 previous exercises-Clade X, Dark Winter, and Atlantic Storm-Event 201 will educate senior leaders at the highest level of US and international governments and leaders in global industries.
Chris Elias, president of global development at the Gates Foundation noted that "Event 201 and its predecessor simulations like Clade X are crucial tools to understand not only what is needed to effectively respond to global public health crises, but also the consequences of what happens when we are not prepared."
The exercise is supported by funding from the Open Philanthropy Project.

Kwok Lab- Neil Risch- Nancy Pelosi
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, UCSF Chancellor Sue Desmond-Hellmann and UCSF scientist Neil Risch met to discuss how the federal economic stimulus package has infused much-need resources to UCSF, small businesses and the City of San Francisco.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi heard firsthand this week how the federal economic stimulus package, known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), is creating jobs, spurring scientific research, improving public safety and transportation and supporting small businesses in San Francisco.
Pelosi hosted a roundtable discussion and news conference on Wednesday at UCSF to celebrate and communicate the success of the $787 billion stimulus program, one year after President Barack Obama signed the bill into law on Feb. 17, 2009.
"This is a very special day for us because we worked very hard to put together this recovery package," Pelosi said. "Our country was on the brink of falling into a deeper national recession."
Since the stimulus bill was passed, the number of jobs lost in the US has decreased significantly-from 741,000 jobs lost last year to 21,000 jobs lost during the same month, Pelosi said. Asked about California's high 12.6 percent unemployment rate, Pelosi noted that the state has its own significant budget challenges, but is getting relief from the recovery act totaling nearly $90 billion that has either been distributed or allocated.

Website
During a roundtable panel discussion, which was moderated by UCSF Chancellor Sue-Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, and included Mayor Gavin Newsom, as well as others from San Francisco's private and public sector, Pelosi asked for specific examples of how the stimulus funding is being used in San Francisco.
Desmond-Hellmann said the stimulus funds will help University scientists conduct "biomedical research that literally will change the world."
"The funds have enabled the University to retain scientists, enhance its research infrastructure, train the next generation of scientists, conduct leading-edge research, and uncover new knowledge to improve human health," she said.
UCSF has been awarded 256 grants totaling $117.8 million as of Feb. 16, making the campus one of the top institutional recipients of this stimulus-based scientific funding. As of year-end, UCSF has received $5.756 million of those funds, enabling UCSF to retain or create 568 jobs in research or associated areas.
The infusion of resources comes at a critical time for UCSF, which is one of 10 campuses of the University of California and the only campus dedicated solely to graduate and professional education in the health sciences. With shrinking state funds, UCSF has increasingly relied upon extremely competitive NIH funding to drive its research, which consistently ranks among the top in the nation in caliber across research areas.
Investing in the Future
Neil Risch, PhD, director of the UCSF Institute for Human Genetics, shared a $25 million grant with Kaiser Permanente to fund the research and creation of the largest genetic health care database ever undertaken. The project will enable scientists to conduct a genome-wide analysis of DNA samples from 100,000 Kaiser member volunteers and connecting that genomic information with actual health outcomes over the past 20 to 40 years, with the goal of ultimately improving upon personalized health care.
"This is an unprecedented opportunity for a large number of scientists around the world to better understand age-related diseases and it's an investment for the future," Risch said.
He noted that the stimulus funding, plus a $9 million donation from Kaiser, will finance the construction of a data center that otherwise would not have been possible and will create additional jobs.
University leaders from across the US and UC system are praising the $10.4 billion provided by the recovery act to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to help pay for scientific research and development, the purchase of new equipment and science-related construction projects.

>Sue Desmond-Hellmann
Dr Evil
2001 to 2009, she served on the executive committee of the board of directors of the Biotechnology Industry Organization
served a three-year term on the Economic Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco beginning in January 2009
2013 was appointed to the board of Facebook where she served until October 2019.
In 2011, Desmond-Hellmann co-chaired a National Academy of Sciences committee that
recommended creating a Google Maps-like data network aimed at developing more diagnostics and treatments tailored to individual patients - a concept known as "precision medicine".
The so-called "knowledge network" would integrate the wealth of data emerging on the molecular basis of disease with information on environmental factors and patients' electronic medical records and would allow scientists to share emerging research findings faster, thereby accelerating the development of tailored treatments. It also would allow clinicians to make more informed decisions about treatments, reduce health care costs and ultimately improve care. The NAS report, titled "Toward Precision Medicine: Building a Knowledge Network for Biomedical Research and a New Taxonomy of Disease", was described by Keith Yamamoto, Vice Chancellor for Research at UCSF, as "the most important National Academy of Sciences Framework Analysis since that advisory body recommended that the United States go forward with the Human Genome Project".
On December 17, 2013, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced that it had selected Desmond-Hellmann as its next chief executive officer.
She assumed her role on May 1, 2014, the first head of the foundation to be neither a former Microsoft executive nor a personal friend of the Gates', and the first physician

Dec 5, 2019
The Gates Foundation has enormous impact. Its CEO leaving could have an enormous impact, too.
The leaders who call the shots at major philanthropies are some of the most powerful people in the world that you've never heard of.
And one at the tippy-top of that list is stepping down in a rare changing of the guard at the Gates Foundation.
Sue Desmond-Hellmann, the CEO of the $50 billion charity, said she would leave her post next year due to health and family isSues, ushering in a new era at what has been viewed as the tech sector's most successful giant charity. Desmond-Hellmann has served as Bill Gates's senior-most aide for the last five years, overseeing the world's largest foundation that dispenses about $5 billion a year in grants.
And so while Desmond-Hellmann has not been a household name, she held enormous influence across the globe, shaping everything from malaria programs in Africa to billionaires' willingness to participate in the Gates-led Giving Pledge. The CEO of a megafoundation is the type of person who operates with little scrutiny or accountability but whose opinions can ricochet around the world and direct the flow of billions of dollars.
That's especially true if you're the head of the Gates Foundation, which has been called, correctly, the nerve center of Big Philanthropy. The Gates Foundation is a role model for many newly wealthy who dream of enormous influence after their business careers, as Gates has had. In the 20 years since they established their foundation, the Gateses and their other rich peer, Warren Buffett, have made it bigger in assets than the older, legacy philanthropies that are icons, those named after people like Ford, Rockefeller, or Carnegie.
That's made Desmond-Hellmann herself a big deal. A doctor and former AIDS researcher who rose high in the leadership ranks at Genentech, she's only the third CEO of the foundation in its history. As the head of the Gates Foundation - with an astounding 1,500 employees - Desmond-Hellmann had to deal with the blowback to their work on US education reform, a key priority for Gates. She eventually admitted in 2016 that the foundation had made some mistakes and that it was a "learning organization."

CEO of Gates Foundation, Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, Resigns
It's with mixed emotions that I've decided to step down as CEO of @GatesFoundation. The past 5+ years are easily among the most rewarding of my career and I'm delighted that my successor is 12-year foundation veteran @MSuzman, who will assume the role Feb 1.

>This is the same person [Bill Gates] who, just six months before the outbreak of the [COVID-19] pandemic, organised a series of four role-playing simulations of a corona pandemic with very high-ranking participants.
"Suzman on public health setbacks" [Mar 2, 2023] - https://youtu.be/QEoz15yuHlM
1:39 - "On the pandemic space we're saying, the world as a whole having just come through this unprecedented crisis with millions of deaths, with trillions of dollars of economic damage and with, I say, the inevitability that there will be another virus and pandemic at some point, should be investing much quickly in a range of interventions. There should be a global health emergency core set up, ideally the World Health Organization."
Mark Suzman, CEO, Board Member, Bill & Melinda Gate Foundation and Helen Suzman's nephew
https://www.gatesfoundation.org/about/leadership/mark-suzman
Mark's upbringing in apartheid South Africa instilled in him a desire to use the advantages afforded to him to help tackle injustice and inequality. He began his career doing that through journalism, writing for the Johannesburg Star and then the Financial Times, where he covered international trade policy, welfare reform, and political isSues, including the historic 1994 election of Nelson Mandela. In 2000, Mark joined the United Nations, where he was part of the effort to implement the Millennium Development Goals under the leadership of then Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He held multiple positions at the UN over his six-year tenure, including senior advisor for policy and strategic communications in the Office of the Secretary General, and policy director in the Office of the Administrator of the United Nations Development Program.
Mark joined the foundation in 2007 as director of Global Development Policy, Advocacy, and Special Initiatives. Prior to becoming CEO, he served as managing director of Country Offices, president of Global Policy and Advocacy, and chief strategy officer. In these roles, he built and oversaw the development of the foundation's offices in India, China, Africa, and Europe, and managed the foundation's relationships with government, private philanthropists, and civil society. He also implemented a new system for how the foundation measures impact and manages tradeoffs across its strategic priorities.
Mark holds a doctorate in international relations from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He earned his bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from Harvard University.

Feb 24, 2020
I started my career in journalism because, growing up in my native South Africa, I learned to cherish the truth. Being white meant I was spared the horrors of apartheid, but my family made sure I never looked away from them. My great aunt, Helen Suzman, spent her life trying to tear down the regime. She served in South Africa's parliament for 36 years, many of them as literally the only voice opposing apartheid. She was brave and she was brilliant.
One thing I got to see was the end of apartheid and the election of Nelson Mandela as president in 1994. I had the opportunity to meet Mandela several times, and the lesson he imparted is that in many ways it takes even more bravery and brilliance to build a just new system as it does to tear down an unjust old one. That requires reaching out to enemies to build a new culture, one centered on equality for all.
In 2000, while working for the Financial Times in Washington D.C., I published a piece about the UN. The gist of it was that a lot of people thought the organization was too rigid and resistant to change. A few days later, I received call from the new head of the UN Development Program. Instead of calling me to complain, he offered me a job. "If you think the UN needs changing," he said, "come help change it." When I took him up on his offer, I was acting on what I'd learned from Mandela. I wanted to play a small part in creating big, lasting change. And during Kofi Annan's tenure as Secretary General I had the opportunity to do just that, playing a part in the creation and implementation of the Millennium Development Goals, which for the first time galvanized the global community around a set of concrete targets for dramatically improving health and wellbeing for all people, no matter where they live.
I moved eventually from the UN to the Gates Foundation, where I have spent 13 years working alongside thousands of partners and colleagues, including Bill, Melinda, and my predecessor as CEO, the incomparable Sue Desmond-Hellmann.
There is Helen, of course, and during a moment while I was driving in Cape Town along what's now named "Helen Suzman Boulevard" in her honor, I reflected on how her influence has shaped me.
