Renewed conflict-of-interest concerns
The deal is the latest in a series of conflict-of-interest concerns surrounding the Trump family's personal investments and whether its members are using the Trump presidency to advance their own financial interests, according to ethics experts.
"The first thing that comes to mind is another example of the president's family appearing to profit from the presidency," said Kedric Payne, senior director of ethics at the Campaign Legal Center.
"In the past, a president would avoid even the appearance that the family was benefitting from the office, and if that couldn't be completely avoided, the president would make statements to reassure the public that there was no special treatment provided to the family that could lead to this benefit. Now, you don't see anything like that." Payne told Al Jazeera.

JFB Construction also appointed Stefan Passantino, a former White House attorney, to its board of directors amid the merger.
The investment comes even as the Trump family company has filed to trademark the use of the president's name on airports but said it doesn't plan on charging a fee at least for a proposed renaming of one near his Florida home, The Associated Press news agency reported.
Josh Gerben, a trademark lawyer who uncovered the filings over the weekend, said the applications were the first of their kind he's ever seen.
"While presidents and public officials have had landmarks named in their honor, a sitting president's private company has never in the history of the United States sought trademark rights in advance of such naming," Gerben wrote on his blog.
"I should be very clear: these are trademark filings that are completely unprecedented."

During former President Joe Biden's term, Republicans rallied against his son Hunter Biden for using his connections with the White House to advance his personal business interests.
"When he [Hunter Biden] got a board position with a company overseas, there were concerns that he was using his name to secure a high-profile job.
There were no ties to government contracts, but even the appearance that he had a position based on his name was controversial," Payne said.

The Oversight Committee in the US House of Representatives alleged that the Bidens "participated or benefited from the business schemes" in a committee hearing in March 2024 about Hunter Biden's business dealings.
"We have learned that Joe Biden has taken action after action to further his family's plans to get rich," James Comer, the committee's then-chairman, said at the time.

Comer did not respond to Al Jazeera's request for comment about whether he shared the same concerns about the Trump family.
"We're talking about something far more extreme: a child receiving benefits from government contracts, at least indirectly through a company he owns, including lucrative contracts with the Defense Department.
That's something we haven't seen since Halliburton and Vice President [Dick] Cheney," Payne said.
The White House and Trump Organization representatives did not respond to a request for comment.

The US Department of Justice is reportedly discussing a settlement with former national security adviser Michael Flynn

Michael Flynn, former national security adviser to US President Donald Trump, is seeking $50 million from the American federal government, Bloomberg reported on Friday, citing court filings. The case is connected with a prosecution he describes as politically motivated and links to attempts to challenge the 2020 election results, according to the outlet.

The legal cases against Trump's campaign team were part of a broader crackdown on efforts to contest the election, including probes related to the January 6 Capitol attack. Trump and his allies repeatedly claimed fraud after losing the vote to Joe Biden.

The Department of Justice is reportedly negotiating a settlement of Flynn's claimin a shift from the previous administration's approach, when government lawyers fought the case.

Apart from Flynn's lawsuit,the agency is reportedly trying to settle a casebrought by former senior White House lawyer Stefan Passantino,who claims that a government investigation into the 2020 election and January 6 damaged his reputation through leaked private information.

Court filings indicate that no specific financial compensation demands have been publicly disclosed in his case, Bloomberg noted.

Flynn and Passantino filed lawsuits in 2023. Flynn lost the first round of his civil damages suit last year, and the US attorney's office in Atlanta continued defending a judge's dismissal of Passantino's case through June.

Flynn initially pleaded guilty to making false statements acknowledging that he had misrepresented his contacts with a Russian official. He later reversed his position and challenged the charges. Trump pardoned him in late 2020, bringing the case to a close.

The extensive legal action against Trump's team has affected numerous allies, including figures involved in the post-election unrest and protests at Capitol Hill. Many of them were pardoned either recently or at the end of Trump's first term.

(Ken Silva, Headline USA) Last month, Breitbart News reported that House Speaker Mike Johnson blocked GOP investigators from subpoenaing Cassidy Hutchinson, who was the Democrat-controlled January 6th Commission's "star witness" in the wake of Jan. 6, 2021.
At the time, it wasn't clear why Johnson was protecting Hutchinson, who was caught changing her testimony during the course of the Jan. 6 Committee hearings. On Thursday, the Washington Post revealed what may have motivated Johnson.
According to the Post, an aide to Johnson blocked the subpoena to prevent the release of sexually explicit texts that lawmakers sent Hutchinson.
"Multiple colleagues had raised concerns with the speaker's office about the potential for public disclosure of 'sexual texts from members who were trying to engage in sexual favors' with Hutchinson," the Post reported Thursday. Separately, a member of Johnson's staff [said] that Hutchinson could 'potentially reveal embarrassing information.'"
Johnson has launched another investigation into Jan. 6 for the new Congress, which will be headed by Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., who uncovered numerous damning facts about the politicized J6 Commission over the last two years.
An investigation into Hutchinson also implicates that then-January 6th Commission Vice Chair Liz Cheney, who secretly communicated with her during the proceedings, and may have pressured her to fire her attorney.
Loudermilk and the Oversight Subcommittee have recommended that the FBI investigate Cheney for potential witness-tampering charges.
"As a licensed attorney, Liz Cheney would have known the ethical and legal issues with this communication," Loudermilk said last October.
"Clearly, Cheney did not want Stefan Passantino representing Hutchinson; as shortly after Cheney and Hutchinson began communicating, Cheney convinced Hutchinson to fire Passantino, and arranged for a new attorney to represent Hutchinson pro-bono."

Judge Rules MSNBC Pundit Potentially Defamed Trump Attorney

A federal court in Washington, D.C., ruled an online claim made by a legal analyst at MSNBC against a former White House attorney in the Trump administration is potentially defamatory. In September, U.S. District CourtJudge Loren AliKhan denied a motionfrom MSNBC legal analyst and attorney Andrew Weissmannto dismissa complaint filed by Stefan Passantino, who represented former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson before she became the Jan. 6 Committee's star witness.

Passantino had previously served as head deputy ethics counsel in the Trump White House and was Hutchinson's attorney when she was initially questioned by the House Democrats' Soviet-style inquisition run by then-Wyoming Rep.
Liz Cheney.Hutchinson fired Passantino, who was being paid by the Save America PAC, when she decided to change her testimony before the House committee and make a series of outlandish claims immediately discredited by her own named sources.

Passantino sued Weissmann last year after the former deputy to Special Counsel Robert Mueller claimed the Trump-world attorney "coached her to lie." "This is an insidious lie," Passantino's lawsuit reads. "Ms. Hutchinson even testified, under penalty of law: 'I want to make this clear to you: Stefan [Passantino] never told me to lie. ... He told me not to lie."

Hutchinson's testimony can be found on page 42 of the publicly available transcript from her Sept. 14, 2022, interview with the Jan. 6 Committee. Passantino, instead, coached her as a standard fact witness to only answer questions she could recall. None of the transcripts dated Feb. 23, 2022, March 7, 2022, or May 17, 2022, show Passantino obstructing Hutchinson's testimony.
While the transcripts were also recorded, the Jan. 6 Committee destroyed the video.
-Weissmann, however, charged Passantino with "coach[ing] her to lie" in a post to roughly 320,000 followers on X after CNN published a series of hit pieces that accused Passantinoof pressuring Hutchinson to illegally manipulate her testimony.
- On Dec. 21, 2022, CNN ran the first hit piece, which cited "sources familiar with the committee's work" who alleged Passantino urged Hutchinson to mislead lawmakers. The network included a statement from Passantino, but made no reference to the transcript of Hutchinson's Sept. 14 interview, in which she explicitly said he told her "not to lie."
- CNN ran another story on Dec. 22, 2022, this one headlined "Cassidy Hutchinson told the January 6 committee she felt pressure from Trump allies not to talk and instead risk 'contempt.'"
- "The final straw for former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson with her first attorney, paid through allies of former President Donald Trump, came when he told her to stop cooperating with the January 6 House select committee even if she risked a contempt of Congress charge, transcripts of her interviews and sources familiar with her testimony tell CNN," the network reported.
- The second story did link to Hutchinson's nearly 140-page Sept. 14, 2022, transcript, which was embedded on the network's website, andreported on her testimony that she was explicitly coached "not to lie"halfway through the story. A recent report from House Republicans investigating the Jan. 6 Committee in October found that Hutchinson was communicating directly with Cheney without Passantino's knowledge throughout his representation of her.

Three months after CNN's stories were published and six months before Weissmann's potentially defamatory post on X, theNew York Times reported on "several dozen prominent legal figures, including past presidents of the American Bar Association and the District of Columbia Bar," trying to revoke Passantino's law license."In a 22-page complaint filed on Monday with D.C.'s Board on Professional Responsibility, prominent lawyers accused Mr. Passantino of the crimes of subornation of perjury, obstruction of justice, witness tampering and bribery," the Times reported.

Passantino became the target of another bar complaint, this one brought in Georgia by a group called the "65 Project," which was expressly established to intimidate attorneys into not working for Republicans.Both the State Bar of Georgia and D.C. ethics watchdogs dismissed the complaints against Passantinoby the end of March.

In October, Passantino filed bar complaints of his own against Cheney and the director of the 65 Project through America First Legal.

There are other discrepancies that emerged between Hutchinson's early testimony and her June 2022 deposition, including about the story of the "hang Mike Pence" chants being discussed in the White House and whether or not she had knowledge of Trump's state of mind when it came to crafting a message for his supporters after the riot had begun as reported previously by Just the News.

On Thursday, Rep. Loudermilk told Just the News that he wants to investigate whether Hutchinson's change in testimony is related to her failure to secure a job with the Trump operation after he left office in January 2021.

"We've had other people who were around and with the White House who have told us similar things, that she was actively trying to get a job in Mar-a-Lago and continue on with the Trump team," Loudermilk said on the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show.

"Some of them feel like that one of the reasons she turned on him is because she wasn't accepted for a position," Loudermilk said. "Now, that's just a hyperbole. I don't know. But these are things that we do want to look into," emphasizing that he has not confirmed this information.

In fact, Hutchinson reportedly kept working for the Trump team for nine weeks after the President left the White House. She was paid by the post-presidential office from Jan. 20 to April 1, 2021, earning a salary of $90,000 according to records reviewed by Business Insider.

In the immediate aftermath of January 6, the media reported that Hutchinson might join Trump's operation in Florida, however in a post to Truth Social, Trump said that he "personally turned her request down" to work with his operation.

A lawyer for Cassidy Hutchinson did not respond to a request for comment from Just the News about Loudermilk's letter or her testimony.

Hutchinson's explanation for the sweeping changes centered on Trump-orbit lawyer Stefan Passantino-who represented her during early interviews with the committee. She alleged that he pressured her to stay "loyal" to Trump in her responses. Passantino has disputed Hutchinson's allegations.

Hutchinson made the claim in a September 2022 interview with the committee, after Passantino ceased representing her in the matter and she had retained a new legal team. Hutchinson told the committee that Passantino informed her that "You're not lying if you say you don't recall" as she prepared for her testimony to the committee.

It's not fair that Mark [Meadows] put you in this position. We just want to focus on protecting the president. We all know you're loyal. A memo reviewed by Just the News shows that Hutchinson waived her attorney/client privilege with Passantino, opening an avenue for Loudermilk's committee to understand the development of Hutchinson's initial testimony.

"Pursuant to Federal Rule of Evidence 502(a)(1), this letter will confirm that our client, Cassidy Hutchinson, is waiving the attorney-client privilege regarding all communications with her previous counsel, Stefan Passantino, between February 7, 2022, and June 8, 2022," Hutchinson's new lawyer wrote the committee Jan. 6 Committee Democratic Chairman Bennie Thompson.

On Monday, Republicans on the Oversight Subcommittee for House Administration demanded that the anti-Trump Jan. 6 Select Committee's key witness, Cassidy Hutchinson, preserve and produce all records and materials in her possession related to the events of Jan. 6, when she told the infamous story that President Donald Trump 'attempted to grab the steering wheel' of the Presidential limo.

Before Hutchinson corrected and changed her testimony, she fired her first attorney, Stefan Passantino. Her new attorney, Joseph Hunt, sent a letter to House Democrats' J6 committee on Sept. 12, 2022, waiving her privileges with Passantino, JTN further reports. The revision was a completely different testimony.

"On June 28, 2022, you testified during one of the Select Committee's primetime hearings. During this hearing you asserted that former President Donald Trump attempted to grab the steering wheel from one United States Secret Service employee driving the vehicle and lunged at another," Chairman Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) wrote in a letter to Hutchinson.

"However, in your previous three transcribed interviews on February 23, 2022, March 7, 2022, and May 17, 2022, you did not mention this interaction. You subsequently testified that you spoke with Alyssa Farah Griffin in order to orchestrate the third interview with the Select Committee on May 17th without your attorney's knowledge. Despite this, you did not recount this attention-grabbing series of events during the May 17th interview," the letter continues.

"This letter serves as formal notice and instruction to preserve and produce all documents, communications, and other information, including electronic information and metadata, that is or may be responsible to this congressional inquiry. This includes all materials you previously turned over to the Select Committee."

Loudermilk told the Daily Caller that Hutchinson's actions are "deeply concerning," and that she'll be slapped with a subpoena if she doesn't provide unredacted documents.

"Cassidy Hutchinson's sudden and substantive changes to her testimony are inconsistent with previous statements she's made publicly and to the January 6 Select Committee. Her actions are deeply concerning and raise serious questions about her credibility," he said, adding ""If she refuses to provide us with these documents, I will not hesitate to subpoena her for further questioning."

He also told JTN that he plans to dig deeper.

"Cassidy Hutchinson tried to explain her dramatic changes in testimony by blaming her initial lawyer Stefan Passantino. Our discovery of Cassidy's errata sheet showing just how substantially her story changed, raises serious concerns about her credibility. Until now, her version of the story was the only one," said Loudermilk. "Now we know Stefan is no longer prohibited from speaking about his interactions with Cassidy by attorney-client privilege. We look forward to hearing the truth from Stefan about his interactions with his then-client Ms. Hutchinson, and the Select Committee."

"In her recently released book, Hutchinson acknowledged she had withheld some information from the House Jan. 6 committee before she changed lawyers. The committee in its final report of December 2022 has accused her former lawyer, Stefan Passantino, of coaching or pressuring her testimony to stay loyal to Trump, something he has adamantly denied.

"Before retaining my new lawyers, at times I had told less than the whole truth to a congressional committee charged with investigating a matter of the highest national importance, a matter that posed a threat to America's future greatness," Hutchinson wrote in her memoir, "Enough." "I had withheld information about events that I had witnessed or that had been recounted to me by witnesses."

The errata sheet and other evidence has been recovered recently by Loudermilk's House Administration Committee Oversight subcommittee, which is the successor panel to the Democrats' Jan. 6 committee. But some key evidence is missing.

The Jan. 6 committee destroyed or got rid of the videotapes of the transcribed interviews they conducted of Hutchison before her nationally televised testimony in June 2022, which makes the typewritten transcripts and her errata as the only official record, Loudermilk told Just the News on Thursday evening.

"All of the videotapes of all depositions are gone," Loudermilk said. "Again, we found out about this early in the investigation when I received a call from someone who was looking for some information off one of the videotapes, and we started searching, and we had none. I wrote a letter to Bennie Thompson asking for them. And he confirmed that they did not preserve those types. He didn't feel that they had to."

"But according to House rules, you have to preserve any data and information and documents that are used in an official proceeding, which they did. They actually aired portions of these tapes on their televised hearings, which means they had to keep those. But yet he chose not to, I believe they exist somewhere. We've just got to find where all these videos are."

A lawsuit filed by Cassidy Hutchinson's former lawyer shows that she initially did not want to comply with the January 6 committee's investigation and appeared to prepare to leak information about the committee's proceedings to the media independently of her lawyer.

These texts date to shortly before her first closed door interview before the special committee investigating the January 6 riot and long before she amended her account of events after jettisoning her first lawyer, Stefan Passantino, who she alleged had pressured her to stay "loyal" to President Trump.

The texts were appended as evidence to Passantino's lawsuit against Andrew Weissmann-an MSNBC legal analyst, former prosecutor and deputy to Special Counsel Robert Mueller-alleging that he "publicly impugned [Passantino's reputation], claiming that Mr. Passantino coached his client, Cassidy Hutchinson, to lie in congressional testimony."

"This is an insidious lie," the lawsuit reads. "Mr. Passantino never coached Ms. Hutchinson to lie, nor did he attempt to shape her testimony in any way."

Passantino did not respond to requests for comment from Just the News on Friday. A lawyer for Hutchinson pointed Just the News to her public testimony and the January 6 committee final report, which repeated her claims about Passantino's alleged pressure.

FBI Knew New York Post's Hunter Biden Laptop Story Was Real Ahead Of 2020 Election, FBI Form Shows

The FBI knew the contents of Hunter Biden's laptop featured in the New York Post's reporting ahead of the 2020 presidential election were real, according to a newly released FBI FD-302 form summarizing the bureau's interview with Hunter Biden's former business associate, Tony Bobulinski.

The FBI interviewed Bobulinski on Oct. 23, 2020 after the New York Post's story contained emails from the Hunter Biden laptop archive Bobulinski was copied on, the FD-302 form states. Bobulinski told the FBI he knew the emails were legitimate and had records of the emails on multiple cell phones, the form asserts. READ THE FBI FORM:"In addition, the New York Post recently published HUNTER BIDEN emails in which BOBULINSKI was copied. BOBULINSKI's name was not redacted from the published emails, which put his name in the public domain and caused significant concern for his family's safety," the document reads. The FD-302 form's contents were first reported by the New York Post.

"Nonetheless, BOBULINSKI was aware that the emails published by the New York Post were legitimate because BOBULINSKI was copied on them and had records of the emails on his own cellular devices," the document adds.

"BOBULINSKI declined to provide his three cell phones to the FBI for imaging. BOBULINSKI voluntarily provided the interviewing agents with copies of emails and text messages that were contained on Passantino's laptop computer. The emails and text messages were loaded onto a flash drive that was in the possession of Passantino," the document specifies.

The three cell phones Bobulinski brought that contained communications records were no longer in use. One of the phones Bobulinski was using, a Blackberry Key One, appeared to contain Hunter Biden's contact information, the FD-302 form says. Neither of Bobulinski's two active phones contained information relevant to the "SinoHawk" joint venture proposal with Chinese business associates that led to discussions about Joe Biden's involvement.

Bobulinski's counsel Stefan Passantino was present for the FBI interview, and he said there were no attorney-client privileged communications on the flash drive. FBI examiners observed Passantino loading the documents on the flash drive and ensured the files were properly transferred and saved. The FBI agents provided Passantino with an FD-597 form in connection with the receipt of the flash drive. Both the flash drive and original copy of the FD-597 are maintained as a physical 1A file, according to the FD-302 form.

"BOBULINSKI did not want the FBI to forensically image the iPhone, Blackberry Bold or the Blackberry Key. BOBULINSKI used the three devices for personal communications and other business transactions, and he was sensitive about permitting the entirety of the data on the phones to be imaged and retained by the FBI," the FD-302 form indicates.

"BOBULINSKI was willing to provide forensic reports produced by a forensic expert recently hired by BOBULINSKI. The forensic expert had fourteen years of experience, including experience working with the FBI. The forensic expert had reviewed the data on the phones and had produced reports on the phones using Cellebrite software," the form adds.

Bobulinski asked the FBI to take steps to verify the communications on his cell phones by confirming the make and model of the devices. The FBI agents reiterated to Bobulinski he was not obligated to turn the devices over and told Passantino the agents would not be able to selectively search for the relevant texts and data.

The New York Post reported on Oct. 15, 2020 an email sent by Hunter Biden's former business associate James Gilliar. Gilliar asked about holding 10% of a potential equity stake for "the big guy," an apparent reference to Joe Biden, who was not holding political office at the time.

"10 held by H for the big guy?" Gilliar asked his business partners in May 2017. Bobulinski was one of the business associates on the email thread featuring Gilliar's question. Gilliar also apparently sent Bobulinski a text expressing paranoia about Joe Biden's potential involvement with the joint venture.

Former aide to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows Cassidy Hutchinson testified before the J6 House Select Committee in 2022 that Trump tried to grab the steering wheel of a "the beast," a limo, on January 6, and just this week copy from her book revealed her claim that she was "groped" by Rudy Giuliani while backstage during the rally at the Ellipse on that same day.

She was counseled in her testimony before the J6 House Select Committee by attorney Stefan Passantino, who said that he advised her to be honest and forthright in her May 17, 2022 testimony. She later hired attorney Jody Hunt, who counseled her for her June 20, 2022 deposition before the House.

That didn't stop MSNBC's Andrew Weissmann from tweeting out to his 320,000 followers that "Hunt also is Cassidy Hutchinson's good lawyer. (Not the one who coached her to lie) And he is the guy who took notes of Trump saying, when Mueller was appointed, quoting him as saying 'I'm f....d'" This was in reference to Hunt having been subpoenaed by Fulton County, Georgia DA Fani Willis in her RICO case against Trump and 18 co-defendants.

Weissmann was likely basing his assertions on Hutchinson's own testimony to the J6 House Select Committee, which is contradicted in her own text messages. In the final report from the J6 House Select Committee, the reference Hutchinson's tesimony. They write that "The Select Committee has also received a range of evidence suggesting specific efforts to obstruct the Committee's investigation. Much of this evidence is already known by the Department of Justice and by other prosecutorial authorities."

Among the evidence provided, they cite that Hutchinson's lawyer "had advised the witness that the witness could, in certain circumstances, tell the Committee that she did not recall facts when she actually did recall them." They further claim that her lawyer, who at the time in question was Passantino, advised her to say that she doesn't recall an event that she does recall. Further, the report states that Hutchinson advised him to not share any information regarding her testimony to the press.

The text messages revealed in the lawsuit Passantino has levied against Weissmann show, as does Hutchinson's other tesimony, that she believes he did not tell her to lie at any point, and that she herself did not want to "comply," but her attorney instructed her to. The messages further reveal that Hutchinson had a plan to leak details of her testimony to the press because she feared the J6 House Special Committee-not her lawyer-would leak them to press.

However, Weissman's assertion that Passantino coached his cliet to "lie" has been directly contradicted by that client herself. In a lawsuit filed on Friday in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, Passantino takes aim at Weissmann for his allegation. To support his case, he offers text messages from Hutchinson that were sent to a friend at the time of her first deposition before the J6 House Committee.

The lawsuit reveals that "In contemporaneous text messages to a close friend… Ms. Hutchinson has admitted that while she did not want to cooperate with the Select Committee, Mr. Passantino encouraged her to do so."

To her friend, she writes "But I don't want to comply. Stefan wants me to comply." Her friend asks what happens if she doesn't comply with the Committee, to which Hutchinson replied "I'm so ducking done with this sh*t I don't have it in me."

She also revealed to this friend Passantino advised her that conversations between White House staff, Trump, and at least one other person are not covered by executive privilege, but are "fair game."

Cassidy Hutchinson recounted to the House select committee how a lawyer with ties to former President Donald J. Trump said to her that she should "focus on protecting the president."

WASHINGTON - Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide who was a standout witness of the House Jan. 6 committee investigation, told the panel in an interview in September that a lawyer aligned with former President Donald J. Trump had tried to influence her testimony, the latest example of what the committee says was an effort to stonewall its inquiry.

"We just want to focus on protecting the president," Ms. Hutchinson recalled Stefan Passantino, a former Trump White House lawyer who represented her during her early interactions with the committee, telling her.

"We all know you're loyal," she said Mr. Passantino told her. "Let's just get you in and out, and this day will be easy, I promise."

Ms. Hutchinson told the committee that she had been told by several allies of Mr. Trump that he knew he had lost the election two weeks after Election Day but continued to push for any way he could try to overturn the results, first through lawsuits but then through increasingly extreme plans.
Ms. Hutchinson testified that Mark Meadows, her boss and the White House chief of staff, spoke with her on Jan. 2, 2021, after Mr. Trump had sought to persuade Georgia election officials to swing the election in his favor.

"He said something to the effect of: 'He knows it's over. He knows he lost. But we are going to keep trying,'" Ms. Hutchinson recalled Mr. Meadows saying, referring to Mr. Trump.

Another time, Mr. Meadows described Mr. Trump as in a constant state of fury over his election loss.
"Mark said something to the effect of: 'He's just so angry at me all the time. I can't talk to him about anything post-White House without him getting mad that we didn't win,'" she said Mr. Meadows told her.
A lawyer for Mr. Meadows did not respond to a call seeking comment.

Ms. Hutchinson also recalled John Ratcliffe, the former director of national intelligence, telling her Mr. Trump knew he lost but did not want to concede.

The statements were among a batch of transcripts the committee released on Thursday that also included notable testimony from Sarah Matthews, a former White House deputy press secretary. Ms. Matthews told the committee that on Jan. 5, 2021, Mr. Trump asked his staff to provide ideas on persuading lawmakers he called RINOs, for "Republicans in name only," to "do the right thing" and join him in overturning the election.

Ms. Matthews recalled that, as crowds began to amass in Washington, eager to attend Mr. Trump's rally the next day, he grew excited and opened the door of the Oval Office on a frigid night to hear them.

"You could tell how excited he was that the crowd was already assembled and ready for the following day," she said.

But it was Ms. Hutchinson's transcript release that captured the most attention on Capitol Hill. The document shows Mr. Passantino was not the only person who Ms. Hutchinson claimed wanted her to protect Mr. Trump.

She told the committee that on the night before her initial interview, another aide to Mr. Meadows, Ben Williamson, called her with a message.

"Mark wants you to know that he knows you're loyal and he knows you'll do the right thing tomorrow and that you're going to protect him and the boss," she quoted Mr. Williamson as saying, in an apparent reference to Mr. Trump. "You know, he knows that we're all on the same team and we're all a family."

Mr. Williamson did not respond to a message seeking comment.

Efforts come amid a fierce war of words over the integrity of the vote

The Trump campaign is bracing for the possibility of a protracted legal battle in the event of a contested election, even forming what it's calling a "Lawyers for Trump" coalition to "protect the integrity" of November's vote.

Campaign General Counsel Matthew Morgan told Fox News this week that the campaign is urging active and retired attorneys and even law students to volunteer in their nationwide efforts.

"Democrats are working to shred election integrity measures one state at a time, and there's no question they'll continue their shenanigans from now to November and beyond," Morgan told Fox News. "The Trump campaign is fighting to ensure every valid ballot across America counts-once."

He added that the Lawyers for Trump coalition is growing "daily" and "will rally support for President Trump as they lend their time and legal expertise to protect the integrity of November's election."

The coalition is being led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge, as well as California Committeewoman Harmeet Dhillon and former Deputy White House Counsel Stefan Passantino. The group includes prominent Trump-allied attorneys like former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, former Attorney General Ed Meese and the president's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani.

The campaign's efforts come amid a fierce war of words between the Trump and Joe Biden campaigns and their allies over the integrity of the vote – covering everything from GOP warnings about mail-in voting to Democrats' predictions that Trump would refuse to accept a loss.

Trump faced heavy criticism this week for suggesting people should try voting twice, first by mail and then in person just in case. He then clarified on Twitter, "On Election Day, or Early Voting, go to your Polling Place to see whether or not your Mail In Vote has been Tabulated (Counted). If it has you will not be able to Vote & the Mail In System worked properly. If it has not been Counted, VOTE (which is a citizen's right to do)."

The Democratic National Committee accused Trump of urging people to "commit voter fraud."

Republicans, for their part, warn there is a potential for widespread fraud and confusion in November's election due to the unprecedented scale of mail-in ballots in states across the nation.

"It is the single biggest problem that there is," Trump said during an interview on "The Ingraham Angle" this week. "Everybody wants an honest election. I want an honest election."

The president said that his team "has lawyers," but Democrats "have more lawyers than any human being has ever hired."

Backed by Trump allies, QAnon promoter vies for Georgia House seat

In a recent TV ad, Marjorie Greene, a Republican primary candidate in Georgia's reliably red 14th District, holds an AR-15 rifle in front of what appears to be her home.

"Antifa terrorists have declared war on America," she says shortly before cocking the rifle. "Rioting, looting and burning our cities, George Soros, Hollywood elites and Joe Biden's staff are funding Antifa."

The spot is similar to an ad recently banned from Facebook for having a prominent weapon. In all, Greene spent over $106,000 on Facebook ads, more than double what the next highest-spending candidate in the race spent on online ads. The controversy earned her a barrage of press just before the June 9 primary.

Greene has raised and spent more than the other eight candidates running for a House seat left open by Rep. Tom Graves' (R-Ga.) resignation. The Associated Press called the race one of Georgia's most competitive primaries. She is also one of dozens of candidates running for federal office across the country that have promoted the alt-right QAnon conspiracy theory, six of whom have already guaranteed a spot on November's ballots.

Like several other QAnon supporting candidates, Marjorie Greene has the backing of several members of President Donald Trump's inner-circle. But unlike most, she has a real shot of winning a seat come November. As of May 20, she has outraised the rest of them combined, including Oregon U.S. Senate candidate Jo Rae Perkins, who recently won her state's primary.

Dog whistles evoking alt-right conspiracy theories are a major part of Greene's campaign, and were also central to her rise to political prominence.

Since 2017, Greene has built a social media following on the far right through confrontational videos with prominent left-leaning figures. In one video, Greene accused David Hogg, a survivor of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, of "using kids" to push an anti-gun agenda. In another, she accused Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) of being an illegitimate congressperson because she was sworn in with a Quran instead of a Bible.

Greene used her platform to voice her support for QAnon - an alt-right conspiracy theory that began on the online message board 4chan and purports that a cabal of left-wing pedophiles has taken over the U.S. government.

One of Greene's largest vendors, which her campaign paid over $45,000, is Elections LLC, a political law firm that represents candidates and committees. The firm is run by former Deputy White House Counsel Stefan Passantino, who also represented Trump during his fight against Democratic congressional subpoenas after leaving his White House role.

According to Greene, Passantino was hired as her attorney and Elections LLC as her FEC compliance team. Passantino did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Elections LLC also received $290,000 from the Trump campaign this cycle and $60,000 from the Republican National Committee.

Other prominent Trump allies have also bolstered Greene's campaign. The House Freedom Fund, a PAC associated with Trump's chief of staff Mark Meadows, spent $44,000 backing Greene and delivered $78,000 in earmarked contributions to her campaign. Greene also received endorsements from prominent Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the House Freedom Caucus and the gun rights group Gun Owners of America.

Another member of Trump's orbit with ties to QAnon-boosting candidates is Roger Kiger, who founded an early pro-Trump super PAC, Citizens for Restoring USA, in 2015. First hearing about the super PAC in an interview with the Washington Post, Trump claimed not to know Kiger, who is a Mar-A-Lago regular. In the same interview, Kiger also called Trump a "friend," but clarified by saying that Trump would likely not know who he was.

Yet a few years later, Kiger was driving Trump's limousine in the presidential motorcade and claimed to have gotten a tour of Air Force One, according to pictures and statements on Kiger's social media. The Secret Service regularly uses unpaid volunteers as motorcade drivers.

For battles with Congress, Trump reshapes legal defense team

The long-time leaders of Trump's team - Jay Sekulow and Rudy Giuliani - remain in place. But other attorneys, known for their litigation skills, are taking on larger roles on the team: William Consovoy, Patrick Strawbridge, Marc Mukasey and Stefan Passantino.

The first legal offensive from Consovoy and Strawbridge has encountered early setbacks. Their law firm, Consovoy McCarthy, filed two lawsuits in April on behalf of Trump intended to block congressional subpoenas seeking the Republican president's personal financial records, but both were rejected last week by federal judges. Trump is appealing those decisions, and House Democrats agreed not to enforce the subpoenas during that process. Some lawyers scoffed at Consovoy's handling of the litigation, particularly a courtroom moment when he sought to cast doubt on the authority of Congress to investigate presidential corruption because it is not a "law enforcement" agency. "Kudos to the judge if he managed not to burst out laughing in open court at this," George Conway, a prominent conservative lawyer and frequent Trump critic, wrote on Twitter. Conway is married to Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway. Others said Consovoy and Strawbridge are losing simply because the law is against them as they advocate for executive branch protection from congressional scrutiny. "They were hired to do an impossible job," said Paul Rosenzweig, a Washington lawyer who worked on the independent counsel investigation into President Bill Clinton in the 1990s.

Trump is defying congressional investigations into his administration, his family, his business interests and his finances, calling them "presidential harassment." His administration has ignored subpoenas, refused to let current and former aides testify and declined to hand over documents in the aftermath of the April release of a redacted version of Mueller's report that detailed Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election to boost Trump's candidacy. The Trump Organization, the president's company, has its own lawyers in the subpoena fights. They include Mukasey, a criminal defense lawyer in Manhattan and former Giuliani law partner whose father Michael Mukasey served as U.S. attorney general from 2007 to 2009 under Republican President George W. Bush, and Passantino, a former lawyer in Trump's White House who is now at a law firm.

Consovoy and Strawbridge both served as clerks in 2008 for Clarence Thomas, one of the most conservative U.S. Supreme Court justices. The firm Consovoy McCarthy, with offices in the Washington suburb of Arlington, Virginia, and in Boston, is known for arguing against affirmative action policies that benefit racial minority groups that have faced discrimination and for battling women's healthcare and abortion provider Planned Parenthood. The firm also is defending Trump in a lawsuit by the Democratic attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia accusing him of violating a U.S. Constitution anti-corruption provision, called the emoluments clause, barring U.S. officials from accepting gifts or payments from foreign governments. The suit cites Trump's refusal to disentangle himself from his businesses including a Washington hotel blocks from the White House. Consovoy, Strawbridge, Mukasey and Passantino declined to provide comment for this story.

Exclusive: House panel seeks to depose Trump tax, ethics attorneys

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. House panel investigating President Donald Trump wants to depose Trump's long-time tax lawyer Sheri Dillon, as well as Stefan Passantino, former deputy White House Counsel in charge of compliance and ethics, according to letters sent to both of them on Wednesday and seen by Reuters. House of Representatives Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, a Democrat, said in the letters that the panel wants to ask about Trump's legally mandated financial ethics disclosures. The panel, the letters said, also seeks information about payments made before the 2016 presidential election by former Trump personal attorney Michael Cohen to buy the silence of women who claimed they had affairs with the married Trump. Neither Dillon nor Passantino responded immediately to requests for comment. The White House also did not immediately have a comment.

The letters, sent hours before Cohen was set to testify to the committee about his work for Trump, signals a widening of its investigation into Trump's personal finances. Dillon has a deep understanding of the president's tax filings. Breaking with decades of presidential tradition, Trump has refused to make his tax returns public, leading other Democrats in Congress also to seek them. The letter did not indicate the committee would question Dillon about Trump's tax returns. The Cummings letters targets a 92-page ethics disclosure form that Trump filed in May 2018. It said he repaid Cohen in 2017 for a $130,000 payment made weeks before the November 2016 election to porn actress Stephanie Clifford, known as Stormy Daniels, to silence her over an alleged sexual encounter with Trump in 2006.

A June 2017 disclosure filed by Trump did not list a debt owed to Cohen. Some critics of the president have said this omission amounted to filing a false report, a federal crime. In the letters to Dillon and Passantino, Cummings wrote that interviews with them "will address issues related to President Donald Trump's financial disclosure reporting and the reimbursement of Michael Cohen for payments to silence women alleging affairs before the 2016 election." He added that, to accommodate committee Republicans' concerns, Dillon and Passantino would be able to provide "a first-hand account of your interactions with the Office of Government Ethics." Passantino's signature appeared on the 2018 disclosure filing, confirming that he concluded Trump was "in compliance with applicable laws and regulations." Passantino, summoned to appear on March 18, is now a legal adviser to the Trump Organization, the president's business.

Dillon, summoned to appear on March 19, is a partner at the law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. She detailed Trump's business investments at a press conference in 2016 shortly after he was elected and would likely have helped prepare the ethics disclosure, which provides an account of his business holdings.
