Foot Locker to Turn Stores into Voter Registration Sites



Foot Locker, in partnership with Rock the Vote, will turn more than 2,000 corporate-owned stores across the country into voter registration sites starting on Tuesday.

Foot Locker, Lady Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker, Champs Sports, and Footaction store locations are included in the nonpartisan, nonprofit voter registration effort by Rock the Vote to get the vote out to young people.

Each of the company's more than 2,000 stores will have a kiosk with a special website on which potential voters may check their voter registration status, sign up for election reminders, or register to vote.

National Voter Registration Day is on Tuesday, September 22.

"At Foot Locker, our mission is to inspire and empower youth culture, so partnering with Rock The Vote was a natural fit to help educate and amplify the voices of today's youth," Foot Locker CEO Richard Johnson said in a statement.

"In a year marked with such uncertainty, amid a pandemic and social unrest, our country's future-and our collective role in shaping it-has never been more important," he added.

Rock the Vote was created in 1990 by a group of music executives, and MTV was their first partner. By the end of August, Rock the Vote had reportedly registered more than 870,000 voters.

Other organizations that are not typical hubs for voter registration are opening their doors, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.

The NBA's Houston Rockets will use its stadium, the Toyota Center, for a voter registration drive this month.

A complicated effort to convert an Iranian military site into a civilian research center has hit a major snag. On 5 December, Russia's TVEL nuclear fuel company announced it has suspended work to produce stable isotopes for medicine and research at the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, a once-clandestine nuclear site near Iran's holy city of Qom.

The project's suspension is the latest casualty of the gradual unraveling of the nuclear deal that world powers struck with Iran in 2015 to deter it from pursuing nuclear weapons. After the United States pulled out of the agreement in May 2018, the other parties sought to preserve the accord, formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). But discussions foundered, prompting Iran to resume some nuclear activities the agreement had curtailed.

The JCPOA had prohibited using equipment at Fordow to enrich uranium for 15 years. The deal called for developing one wing of the two-wing, bunkerlike facility, which sits under a mountain, as an international physics center. But that concept that gained little traction as signatories puzzled over what might be installed in the cramped space. Ultimately, Iran moved on its own to install instrumentation for an analytical laboratory dubbed the Material Engineering Development and National Research Center.

Work in the other wing has hewed more closely to the JCPOA's terms, which called for reconfiguring 348 IR-1 centrifuges at Fordow to produce stable isotopes. In a pilot effort that began in 2017, TVEL experts in recent months had converted 11 centrifuges to enrich isotopes of two elements: xenon and tellurium. "It was running under the radar, but progress was being made," says Richard Johnson, an analyst with the Nuclear Threat Initiative in Washington, D.C., who previously worked on JCPOA implementation at the U.S. Department of State. Slowing TVEL's painstaking work was uranium contamination leftover from the enrichment activities predating the nuclear deal. Nevertheless, Johnson says, in JCPOA partner meetings Russia had shared ambitious plans to convert IR-1's to produce a range of stable isotopes that could be used in research and disease treatment.

Those plans are now on hold. In its latest move to distance itself from the JCPOA, Iran on 6 November resumed enriching uranium hexafluoride gas at Fordow, producing material with a level of the fissile isotope uranium-235 suitable for commercial power reactors. (Weapons require a higher level of enrichment.) The U.S. State Department then declared that starting 15 December, civilian projects at Fordow-for now only the stable isotope production-would no longer be exempt from punitive sanctions.

In announcing the project's suspension, TVEL declared that it was "technologically impossible" to carry out stable isotope production in the same room as uranium enrichment. "We are taking a break now," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told TASS, the government news agency, on 7 December. He explained that experts are reexamining how the project might yet be revived-and what sanction-related penalties Russia might incur if it were to resume. "We don't abandon the project," he said.

Her father was sued by Nxivm and several of its members, including Nancy Salzman, allegedly for sexual harassment of Salzman. Doug settled with Nxivm by paying them $100,000 in June 2006.

Gillibrand's cousin, Gwenn Bellcourt, married her father and became her stepmother because of Nxivm.

On October 23, 2013, Tighe's blog came to an abrupt end when his computer was seized by New York State Police on suspected computer trespassing charges.

He was charged and, in a November 2013 plea bargain, Tighe admitted he intentionally accessed the computer network of NXIVM, downloading the list of NXIVM participants and clients, including contact information.

Another one escaped - because of romance, Vanguard no doubt opined. Prefect likely argued that she should have known better to try to find joy in a some monogamous relationship. And maybe Vanguard waxed philosophic, "Knowing what to do is useless without the emotional strength to do what you know."
In any event, Doug Rutnik did what few were ever successful in doing - he successfully de-programmed Gwenn and married her too and they lived happily ever after without Prefect or even Vanguard or Gwenn getting branded.

Now Page Six is told that Dawson was heard saying - or, more specifically, singing - "I love you" to Booker.

Spies at Saturday's performance of Broadway hit "Dear Evan Hanson" say they were left in no doubt that Booker and Dawson - who brought Dawson's daughter and Booker's niece to see the show - are a couple.

And after meeting the cast post-show, Dawson - who was walking across the empty stage on her way to the exit - began fooling around and singing a made-up song to Booker that went, "I love you; te amo [as in, the Spanish for 'I love you']."

"They were so cute together and seemed so flirtatious," said a spy backstage. While the source said that they didn't kiss while they were there, they said it was clear that they're an item.

We're told the show's cast were almost as smitten with the Dawson and Booker as the two seem to be with each other.

A source said that celebrity meet-and-greets with the cast usually last around 10 minutes, but that the couple and their families spent an hour hanging out with the actors.

"They were fangirling over everyone in the cast, and the cast was fangirling over them," said our insider, "thanking Senator Booker for his work during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings and for standing up to Trump."

In his New York Post Page Six column, legendary columnist Richard Johnson writes, about an early student of NXIVM - Stephen Cooper.

Cooper, 72, is of interest to general readers since he is the CEO of the Warner Music Group. He was formerly acting CEO of Enron.

As far as I know, Cooper was first mentioned publicly as a NXIVM student in a 2003 Forbes article, The Cult of Personality.

In the Forbes article, Cooper was listed alongside Sheila Johnson, cofounder of Black Entertainment Television; Antonia C. Novello, a former U.S. surgeon general; billionaire Edgar Bronfman Sr., his daughters, Sara and Clare; Ana Cristina Fox, daughter of then-Mexican president, Vicente Fox, and Emiliano Salinas, son of former Mexican president, Carlos Salinas.

Of Cooper, Forbes wrote, "Raniere says there's nothing in his operation that makes it a cult, and indeed, many enrollees see Executive Success as a good coaching program and nothing more. Enron's Stephen Cooper puts himself in this category."

It is not known if Forbes spoke with Cooper. He is not quoted directly in the story.

Johnson points out in his Page Six column that Cooper is ranked as the sixth most powerful man in the music business, according to Billboard.

Johnson writes, "A Warner Music source said Cooper's turnaround company Zolfo Cooper had one meeting with Nxivm about 20 years ago.

"'This was well before any of the alarming accusations and, after this one meeting, Zolfo Cooper had no further contact with the firm,' the source said."

By firm, the source evidently meant NXIVM.

Johnson points out that "Warner Music's ties to Nxivm are much deeper. Edgar Bronfman Jr. owned Warner Music when he agreed to judge a Nxivm-sponsored 'a cappella' singing competition in 2007."

I attended that event, and did pre-publicity for it. At the time I did not realize that the concert - with headliners Kristin Kreuk, Allison Mack and Nicki Clyne - was designed to recruit college students.

I was quoted in the Page Six story: "'The real goal was to recruit college students into the cult,' said Frank Parlato, Nxivm's former publicist who has spent years exposing its dark side....

"Parlato expects Raniere and Bronfman and their four co-defendants to be re-charged with a superseding indictment that will push their trials to late 2019."

I told Richard Johnson that, during my days with NXIVM, [2007-08] I never saw Cooper.

Unsolicited absentee ballots leave Oklahoma voters scratching their heads

OKLAHOMA CITY - Sharon Triplet plans to cast her vote November 6 and not a day sooner.

"I was kind of concerned this was some kind of scam getting me to vote early," she said.

Tens of thousands of registered voters in our state received unsolicited applications for absentee ballots in the mail.

Triplet's was already filled out with her personal information.

"[It had] my name and address, my home," she said.

It's not that big of deal because your name, address, party affiliation and how often you vote is public information.

Oklahoma City University political science professor and registered Democrat voter Dr. Richard Johnson also got an unsolicited application.

"The first thing I look at is return address, which is Springfield, Missouri, which is a very socially conservative area, so I'm thinking this is something Republican oriented or from a conservative group," he said.

We alerted the Oklahoma State Election Board.

"It's certainly something the election board wouldn't do," said Oklahoma State Election Board secretary Paul Ziriax.

It's not against the law either.

The absentee ballot applications are the real thing, the same forms you get from the state.

"Most of the phone calls we're receiving here are just questioning 'Who is this group? How did they get my information?'" Ziriax said.

We know the mailing is from a group called the Center for Voter Information, but they're not based in Missouri.

Rather, CVI is a tax-exempt 501c4 non-profit known as a social welfare group out of Washington DC.

CVI's program director told us they are a "non-partisan organization with a mission to increase civic engagement among people of color, unmarried women and millennials."

While they claim to be non-partisan, according to Federal Election Commission filings, they've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars supporting Democrats and opposing Republican U.S. House and Senate candidates.

Back in 2010, when the group went by the name Women's Voices Women Vote Action Fund, they paid for an ad in a Colorado U.S. Senate race and spent close to $1 million targeting the Republican nominee.

Top State Department Nuclear Expert Announces Resignation After Trump Iran Deal Exit

One of the State Department's top experts on nuclear proliferation resigned this week after President Donald Trump announced the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, in what officials and analysts say is part of a worrying brain drain from public service generally over the past 18 months.

Richard Johnson, a career civil servant who served as acting assistant coordinator in State's Office of Iran Nuclear Implementation, had been involved in talks with countries that sought to salvage the deal in recent weeks, including Britain, France, and Germany - an effort that ultimately failed.

He did not give a specific reason for his departure. But in a farewell email to colleagues and staff, Johnson stressed that the 2015 agreement Trump was ditching had successfully curbed Iran's nuclear program.

"I am proud to have played a small part in this work, particularly the extraordinary achievement of implementing the [deal] with Iran, which has clearly been successful in preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon," he wrote.

Foreign Policy obtained a copy of the email.

Johnson's departure leaves a growing void in the State Department's stable of experts on Iran's nuclear program and highlights a broader problem of high-level departures from government.

Officials say the trend is particularly evident at the State Department, where Trump sidelined career diplomats and morale plummeted under former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. The office Johnson led has gone from seven full-time staffers to none since Trump's inauguration.

Tillerson last year shuttered the department's sanctions coordination office and moved some sanctions experts into administrative roles.

One U.S. official who works on sanctions described Johnson's resignation as a "big loss" for the department and reflective of a growing sense that the Trump administration is casting aside career experts and ignoring their input as it pushes through a bevy of controversial foreign-policy priorities.

Until the Trump administration moved to dismantle the nuclear pact, Johnson, 38, had planned to remain in government service, according to a former State Department official.

"He's exactly the kind of person we want to keep in government," says Brian O'Toole, a former Treasury official who is now a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, a Washington-based think tank.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand must come clean about her family's connection to an alleged sex-slave cult upstate whose leader was arrested by the FBI on Monday, her Republican rival said.

GOP senatorial candidate Chele Farley noted that Gillibrand's father, Doug Rutnik, was once a lobbyist for NXIVM and its founder, Keith Raniere.

"For Kirsten Gillibrand, the self-proclaimed #MeToo Senator, to claim ignorance about a notorious sex-slave cult, in her own backyard, is simply hard to believe," said Farley.

Raniere hired Rutnik as a lobbyist in 2004, only to later sue him. Rutnik settled the case for $100,000.

A Gillibrand spokesman Tuesday referred The Post to a statement to Post columnist Richard Johnson last November, claiming she knew nothing.

"Senator Gillibrand had never heard of this group until she recently read about them in the newspaper," said the spokesman, Glen Caplin.

He said the senator received a copy of a letter last fall about the group and referred it to the state attorney general to investigate. "She is glad that federal and state prosecutors have taken action in this case," Caplin said.
