Exaggerating Hate Pays: Scandal-Plagued SPLC Has Millions in Offshore Accounts, Half a Billion in Assets
Last year, the SPLC fired its co-founder, Morris Dees, and saw its president, Richard Cohen, resign amid a sexual harassment and racial discrimination scandal that dated back decades. Dees is a notorious philanderer (as I explain in the book) and black employees complained that the SPLC felt like a "plantation."
The SPLC may have fired Dees, but it still gave him a hefty salary for the time between November 1, 2018, and March 14, 2020. The group's most recent tax filing (covering November 1, 2018, to October 31, 2019) shows Dees made $373,899, with an estimated $44,264 in other forms of compensation. Cohen made $383,231, with an estimated $43,477 in other compensation. Rhonda Brownstein, who also resigned during the scandal, made $233,063, with an extra $31,116 in other compensation.
While the SPLC promised an internal investigation into its workplace culture, it has yet to release the results, more than a year later.
In 2012, a gunman targeted the Family Research Council (FRC), a conservative Christian nonprofit in Washington, D.C., based on the SPLC's "hate group" accusation. The man intended to shoot every person in the building and put a Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich by his or her head. Thanks a brave security guard, his evil plot was foiled, but not before he shot the guard in the arm. He told the FBI that he targeted FRC using the SPLC's map of "anti-gay groups."
Despite all this baggage, the SPLC still enjoys tremendous influence in American culture. Left-leaning news outlets regularly cite it as a credible resource on "hate." In 2017, CNN championed the very same "hate map" that inspired the FRC shooting. Last year, The New York Times, the Miami Herald, and The Palm Beach Post repeated SPLC smears against the national security nonprofit ACT for America, convincing Mar-a-Lago to cancel an ACT for America gala. Amazon Smile excludes any charity on the SPLC's list, YouTube considers the SPLC a "trusted flagger" of content, PayPal and Eventbrite have booted organizations on the list, and Discover has refused credit card processing services to accused "hate groups."
Americans cannot trust this morally bankrupt organization. It is high time the media, Big Tech, and corporate America stop treating the SPLC as an arbiter of hate. Perhaps the IRS should get involved.

Wheels come off the Southern Poverty Law Center
On March 14, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the left-liberal civil rights nonprofit group known for its conspicuous wealth and ever-expanding lists of right-wing "hate" figures and organizations, abruptly fired 82-year-old Morris Dees. Dees, an Alabama lawyer, is the man who founded the SPLC in Montgomery in 1971 and built it into a fundraising powerhouse with assets approaching $500 million. Not long after his departure, President Richard Cohen and legal director Rhonda Brownstein, both of whom have been at the center since 1986, resigned.
The SPLC hasn't said much about the three departures, especially that of Dees, whose profile, though not photos, it scrubbed from its website. News media reported allegations of sexual harassment and racial and gender discrimination that had circulated on in-house emails. New female members of staff had allegedly been warned repeatedly about overtures from the five-times-married Dees. The SPLC's highest-ranking black woman, senior attorney Meredith Horton, had resigned, and according to the Los Angeles Times, other female staffers had signed letters protesting office mistreatment and discrimination. Cohen issued a statement implying that Dees had failed to meet the SPLC's "standards" of "truth, justice, equity and inclusion."

THE SPLC IS IMPLODING AND IT'S GLORIOUS
More SPLC Employees Step Forward, Claim "Systemic Culture Of Racism And Sexism"
One week after the head of the Southern Poverty Law Center and the organization's legal director resigned, more employees are coming forward to tell CNN that the nonprofit group suffers from a "systemic culture of sexism within its workplace."
SPLC Co-founder Morris Dees, former president Richard Cohen, former legal director Rhonda Brownstein
This comes after two dozen employees signed a letter of concern over "allegations of mistreatment, sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism following the ouster of co-founder Morris Dees over sexual misconduct claims.
CNN spoke with three current employees of the organization who talked on condition of anonymity because of fears over possible retribution.
It was one of those employees who cited the systemic problems with racism and sexism, and a second employee agreed with that assessment.
…
But one of the employees who spoke to CNN alleged the organization suffers from a "pervasive racist culture" and an environment in which a woman is not seen or heard. She also said qualified African-American employees were regularly passed over for promotions – including one African-American colleague she describes as brilliant. She added, "My boss only hires white people." -CNN
Sounds like conservative pundit Gavin McInnes was right when he said the SPLC is "frothing with bigots." McInnes is suing the nonprofit for labeling his fraternal organization, the Proud Boys, a hate group.
Earlier this month, the SPLC board of directors appointed Michelle Obama's former chief of staff, Tina Tchen to head up the inquiry into the sexual misconduct claims. In an unrelated matter, Tchen was apparently was able to pull strings and have the Jussie Smollett case dropped.

Inside the SPLC "Scam"
As the Washington Examiner's Beckett Adams wrote last week, the Southern Poverty Law Center is a "scam," which has taken "no care whatsoever for the reputational and personal harm it causes by lumping Christians and anti-extremist activists with actual neo-Nazis."
As it turns out, the SPLC is a cynical money-making scheme, according to a former staffer's blistering tell-all, published this week in the New Yorker. The center's chief goal is to bilk naive and wealthy donors who believe it's an earnest effort to combat bigotry.
The only thing worse than a snarling partisan activist is a slimy conman who merely pretends to be one. -Washington Examiner
""Outside of work," recalls Bob Moser of his days working for the organization, "we spent a lot of time drinking and dishing in Montgomery bars and restaurants about ... the hyperbolic fund-raising appeals, and the fact that, though the center claimed to be effective in fighting extremism, 'hate' always continued to be on the rise, more dangerous than ever, with each year's report on hate groups. 'The S.P.L.C.-making hate pay,' we'd say."

SPLC Implodes: President And Legal Director Resign Amid Sexual Misconduct Scandal
The Southern Poverty Law Center - the "vicious left-wing attack dog" used by the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Google and Amazon to identify "hate groups" - is unraveling.
A week after co-founder Morris Dees was ousted over sexual misconduct claims - with two dozen employees signing a letter of concern over "allegations of mistreatment, sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and racism," the head of the SPLC, Richard Cohen, as well as the organization's legal director, Rhonda Brownstein, resigned on Friday.
Cohen had been with the organization 33 years and was one of its most prominent figures.
At 5:03 p.m. Friday, Cohen sent a message to staff, with the subject line "Stepping Down," announcing that he, too, would be leaving the organization that he and Dees had turned into a research and fundraising juggernaut.
"Whatever problems exist at the SPLC happened on my watch, so I take responsibility for them," Cohen wrote, while asking the staff to avoid jumping to conclusions before the board completes an internal review of the Montgomery, Ala., organization's work culture. -LA Times
Earlier this week, the SPLC board of directors appointed Michelle Obama's former chief of staff, Tina Tchen - who, in an unrelated matter, unsuccessfully tried to pull strings and have the Jussie Smollett case transferred from the Chicago PD to the FBI. Tchen is heading up the inquiry into the sexual misconduct claims.
Also out on Friday was Rhonda Brownstein - who had worked with the organization for nearly three decades, according to the Montgomery Advertiser's Melissa Brown.

"The Southern Poverty Law Center is being forced to reckon with its own intolerence after its two highest-ranking executives have resigned in disgrace.
"The president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Richard Cohen, announced his resignation Friday, the latest in a series of high-profile departures at the anti-hate organization that have come amid allegations of misconduct and workplace discrimination," the LA Times reported.
Last week, Morris Dees, a cofounder of group, was forced to resign amid vague allegations of misconduct. It was later reported that an email circulated from former SPLC employee Meredith Horton had accused management of maltreatment of female and minority employees. That prompted the group to launch an internal probe of workplace culture, led by former Obama administration official Tina Tchen.
"Whatever problems exist at the SPLC happened on my watch, so I take responsibility for them," Cohen reportedly told staff in his email resignation.
Friday, the organization's legal director, Rhonda Brownstein, also resigned via email."
