February 1945. Even as victory in Europe was finally within reach, the war in the Pacific raged on. One of the most crucial and bloodiest battles of the war was the struggle for the island of Iwo Jima, which culminated with what would become one of the most iconic images in history: five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi. The inspiring photo capturing that moment became a symbol of victory to a nation that had grown weary of war and made instant heroes of the six American soldiers at the base of the flag, some of whom would die soon after, never knowing that they had been immortalized. But the surviving flag raisers had no interest in being held up as symbols and did not consider themselves heroes; they wanted only to stay on the front with their brothers in arms who were fighting and dying without fanfare or glory. ?Flags of Our Fathers? is based on the bestselling book by James Bradley with Ron Powers, which chronicled the battle of Iwo Jima and the fates of the flag raisers and some of their brothers in Easy Company. Bradley?s father, John ?Doc? Bradley, was one of the soldiers pictured raising the flag, although James never knew the full extent of his father?s experiences until after the elder Bradley?s death in 1994. The ensemble cast of ?Flags of Our Fathers? includes Ryan Phillippe (?Crash?), Jesse Bradford (?Happy Endings?), Adam Beach (?Windtalkers?), Paul Walker (?Into the Blue?), Jamie Bell (?Billy Elliot?), Barry Pepper (?Saving Private Ryan?) and John Benjamin Hickey (?Flightplan?). Director Paul Haggis will be released from house arrest while prosecutors in Italy decide whether to pursue rape charges against him.

Judge Vilma Gilli ordered the Canada-born filmmaker could be sprung from his hotel pending the investigation on Monday.

Haggis, 69, was detained in Puglia last month after a woman alleged he raped her over two days while he was in the country for an arts festival in Ostuni.

The accuser has not been identified, though press reports have described her as a 28-year-old British woman.

"We were supposed to work together, but instead he raped me from Sunday evening to Wednesday," the woman told cops in the southern city of Brindisi, the Daily Beast has reported.

Oscar-winning Canadian screenwriter and director Paul Haggis has been arrested in Ostuni, Southern Italy, on charges of sexual assault and aggravated personal injury allegedly inflicted upon a still unidentified woman who has pressed charges.

According to multiple Italian press reports and a note from the public prosecutor of the nearby city of Brindisi, Haggis is charged with forcing a young "foreign" - meaning non-Italian - woman to undergo sexual intercourse over the course of two days in Ostuni, where he was scheduled to hold several master classes at the Allora Fest, a new film event being launched by Los Angeles-based Italian journalist Silvia Bizio and Spanish art critic Sol Costales Doulton that is set to run in Ostuni from June 21 to June 26.

Bizio has confirmed to Variety that Haggis is under arrest.

Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis (Crash) was detained on Sunday in the southern Italian town of Ostuni on charges of sexual assault and aggravated personal injury, according to multiple reports in the Italian media and a statement by the public prosecutors of the nearby city of Brindisi.
A young woman, identified only as being "foreign," that is not Italian, has pressed charges against Haggis, accusing the two-time Oscar winner of forcing her to engage in sexual intercourse over the course of two days in Ostuni, where Haggis was scheduled to hold a series of master classes at the Allora Fest, a new film festival launched by L.A.-based Italian journalist Silvia Bizio and Spanish art critic Sol Costales Doulton that is set to run from June 21-26.
The woman was taken to the Papola Casale airport in Brindisi on Sunday morning and left there despite her "precarious physical and psychological conditions," according to an Italian police report. She was then aided by airport staff and police officers and taken to the hospital. She subsequently filed formal charges.
This isn't the first time Haggis has been accused of rape. He has faced civil cases in the past that included multiple women, one of whom issued claims very similar to his latest charges:
In 2018, the publicist Haleigh Breest sued Haggis, who wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay to Million Dollar Baby and wrote and directed Oscar best picture winner Crash, alleging he had violently raped her in her New York apartment after a premiere in 2013. The former Hollywood bigshot failed to respond to a legal action brought by a trial prep services company claiming that he stiffed them of tens of thousands of dollars and has been dodging their emails and letters ever since.
