Wayfair reportedly cutting 870 jobs, including hundreds in Boston
I guess Anons' discoveries about Wayfair selling sex-trafficked children wasn't good for business for these Satanic scumbags. LOLOLOLOL.

Wayfair is reportedly cutting 870 jobs, including hundreds in Boston.
Reuters reported Friday that the Boston-based online furniture retailer would cut about 5% of its global workforce. About 400 of those jobs, the Boston Globe reported, would be in Boston.
"We are actively navigating Wayfair towards a level of profitability that will allow us to control our own destiny, while still investing aggressively in the future," Niraj Shah, Wayfair CEO and co-founder, said in a memo to employees, according to the Globe. "The macro environment doesn't change our belief in the size of the opportunity and we are moving purposely to seize that opportunity."
The news comes weeks after its second quarter reports.
The report stated that total net revenue was down $573 million, which was down 14.9% year over year. U.S. net revenue was down 9.7% year over year or $302 million and International net revenue of $0.5 billion decreased $271 million, which was down 35.7% year over year.
"During a difficult macroeconomic environment, we remain squarely focused on our customers and our suppliers, and on making sure Wayfair is their preferred platform for the Home," Shah said in a statement after the report. "We are tightly controlling our many levers and steering Wayfair in a financially responsible manner through this period."
He also stated that the plan is "intended to balance continued investment in long-term growth while ensuring tight day-to-day execution across a range of macro scenarios."
The Globe reported the company benefited significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, however, due to recent inflation has seen revenue decline.
Fortune reported Wayfair implemented a hiring freeze for 90 days in May citing economic uncertainty. It also laid off 3% of staff in 2020, according to USA Today.

Wayfair, Bain and Twitter execs help fund Boston greeting card startup
Nov 29, 2016
Lovepop, the startup that uses design software and laser cutters to make 3-D greeting cards, announced Tuesday it has raised $6 million in Series A funding. The round was led by Boston-based Accomplice Ventures and also included Niraj Shah of Wayfair, Bob White of Bain Capital, and Wayne Chang of Crashlytics and Twitter.
Co-founders Wombi Rose and John Wise launched the company out of Harvard Innovation Labs in 2014, participated in the Techstars Boston 2015 accelerator, raised $2.6 million in November 2015, and then added another $300,000 from "Shark Tank" investor Kevin O'Leary. Every card design starts as a sketch on paper that is translated to modeling software, in which each shape is drawn. Those shapes are then transferred to a software that routs a laser-cutter to cut out each piece. The company said the new investment will go toward design and production resources, supporting two New York City retail kiosks and launching a wedding-invitation option, which is set to launch in March. Lovepop currently sells more than 200 card designs online and through retail partners. Rose told the Business Journal Lovepop had roughly $1 million in sales in 2015, and now the company says it's grown revenue 400 percent in the past 12 months. About 30 full-time employees work in Lovepop's Boston headquarters, in addition to part-time "brand ambassadors" at retail locations in Boston and New York and a team in Vietnam.

James Savarese and John Mulliken to Depart Company-Thomas Netzer Appointed Chief Operating Officer, Allan Lyall Appointed Chief Global Supply Chain Officer, Jim Miller Appointed Interim Chief Technology Officer
BOSTON(BUSINESS WIRE) Wayfair (NYSE:W), one of the world's largest online destinations for the home, today announced that James Savarese, Chief Operating Officer, and John Mulliken, Chief Technology Officer, will retire from the company in 2019. Both leaders served the company for more than a decade each, helping to drive Wayfair's rapid ascent from an e-commerce start-up to a global, Fortune 500 technology leader and consumer brand.
"James and John have both served as exceptional leaders over a period of tremendous growth for the company. They helped make Wayfair the global ecommerce leader it is today," said Niraj Shah, CEO, co-founder and co-chairman, Wayfair. "We are deeply grateful for their many contributions. They leave behind strong teams and have well positioned Wayfair for continued success. We are appreciative of their commitment to a smooth transition over the coming months and wish both James and John the very best."As part of a planned transition, Wayfair has appointed Thomas Netzer, current COO of Wayfair's European operations, to succeed Savarese as COO. Netzer will relocate from Wayfair's Berlin office to Boston headquarters this summer. Wayfair has also promoted Allan Lyall to the new role of Chief Global Supply Chain Officer with responsibility for the company's rapidly growing global supply chain. Savarese will remain with the company to support the transition through October 15, 2019. Netzer steps into the COO role after serving as one of Wayfair's most senior leaders responsible for growing Wayfair's European sales and service organization, overseeing the European CastleGate warehousing business, and managing all European supply chain functions. Prior to Wayfair, Netzer spent more than 20 years working in global transportation and infrastructure for McKinsey & Company, where he co-led the consultancy's global logistics practice.

Alternative medicine directory Jill's List acquired by California-based Mindbody
Posted by Scott Kirsner May 14, 2013 01:00 PM
How's this for crazy timing?
Jill Shah had just sold her Back Bay startup, Jill's List, on April 15th. The money had just hit her bank account. She hadn't even had a chance to tell her seven employees about the sale yet when she heard two explosions nearby; Shah's company is located on Boylston Street, in between where the first and second bombs went off on Marathon Monday.
Shah's two kids had come into the office with their nanny to have lunch with her. "I had figured I would pull everyone together for a toast after lunch," she says. Instead, thinking that buildings nearby had been blown up, Shah, her kids, and her team evacuated their building at 726 Boylston and went home. "We weren't in the office for a week," she says.
Things have settled down considerably since Shah's somewhat atypical acquisition experience last month. She's now running the Boston office of Mindbody, a California company that sells web-based software to fitness studios, salons, and other wellness-oriented businesses to help them manage their businesses. Jill's List had created a network of more than 4,000 alternative medicine practitioners like acupuncturists and masseuses, and helped employees with flexible spending accounts or health savings account find the right practitioner for their needs, book appointments, and track payments. Employers pay a monthly fee to give their employees access to the Jill's List network.
Jill's List had created a partnership with Mindbody prior to the acquisition. "Their software helps practitioners run their businesses, and we've been trying to feed those practitioners into corporate America," Shah says. "We're also focused on ways to help doctors write orders for things like acupuncture or yoga as easily as they can write an order for a blood test or a CT scan."
"Our thesis is all about the convergence of healthcare and wellness," says Mindbody CEO Rick Stollmeyer, who is planning his first visit to the Boston office this Friday. Jill's List is the company's second acquisition so far; Shah will be senior vice president of what is being rebranded as the Mindbody Wellness Network. The acquisition price isn't being disclosed.
Shah started Jill's List in 2010, and never raised outside funding. She's married to Wayfair co-founder Niraj Shah, whose Back Bay e-commerce company has pursued a different funding strategy: it began as a bootstrapped business, but collected just over $200 million in outside capital last year.

10 Things You Didn't Know about Wayfair CEO Niraj Shah
cont
6. He Values Honesty
According to Wayfair co-founder Steve Conine, one of Shah's best traits is his honesty. He is honest about practically everything, and has a drive to increase his own maturity and better himself in general. Conine states that Shah's honesty, bluntness, and ability to read a situation is what brought Wayfair to the success it has seen today.
7. He Hates to Fire People
In a 2013 interview, Shah admitted that he used to be terrible at firing people. He doesn't like to do it, and he used to put it off or avoid it entirely. However, he soon discovered that this hurts everyone - the company, other employees, the underperformer - so he worked on hardening his heart a bit. Now, he still doesn't have fun firing anyone but recognizes that it can be essential to the company's performance. Sometimes, the fired employee even goes on to better themselves or find a job they love.
8. He Has Three Methods to Retain Valuable Employees
Niraj Shah wants to keep his skilled workers. Therefore, he developed three specific methods to retain his best employees. First, he recognizes the importance of challenging an employee. A skilled worker is valuable wherever they work, so it is in the best interest of the company to help them learn - whether that is developing new skills or staying up to date with a changing industry.
Second, work should be fun. Shah's company accomplishes this through a relaxed company culture that has outings and other activities to take some of the stress of day-to-day work off of their shoulders. Plus, Wayfair will pay for these activities, eliminating related financial stress entirely.
The third method is to reward and recognize efforts. He stresses the importance of monetary rewards, but also mentions his "Recognition Wall". This is a place on the internal website in which high-performing employees have official company recognition.
9. He's a Philanthropist
Shah has made several donations to charities. For example, he sent a sizeable donation to the Hub and Spoke project in Boston. The Hub and Spoke is a food program for high schools. The "Hub" school, East Boston High School, is where all of the food is prepared. This food is then sent out to the three "Spoke" schools - helping low-income students afford their daily meals.
10. He Was Named CEO of the Year
At the 20th Annual Mass Technology Leadership Awards Gala, held at Boston's Seaport World Trade Center, Niraj Shah took home the honor of CEO of the Year. He was recognized alongside names like Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee (inventor of the World Wide Web) and Melissa James (Black Tech Boston founder and advocate for diversity). And, with Shah's business record, it was a well-deserved award.

10 Things You Didn't Know about Wayfair CEO Niraj Shah
One of the best entrepreneurs of our time is Niraj Shah. Currently, he is the CEO and co-founder (alongside Steve Conine) of Wayfair, the world's largest online retailer of houseware, furniture, and other home improvement goods in the United States. The company made $4.3 billion dollars of revenue in 2017. Before Wayfair, he co-founded Spinners - an integrated technology and design service company. He sold it to iXL in 1998, and moved on to become a member of the board of directors there. Plus, he was the Entrepreneur-In-Residence at Greylock Partners, a venture capital firm. By 2002, he had joined up with Steve Conine to start CSN Stores, which later became Wayfair.
In each of Shah's business ventures, he has found success. Wayfair is one of the fastest-growing companies in the home goods sector, and already has surpassed other similar retailers. They work with a large network of suppliers and distributors to make each customer experience the best it can be. If you want to learn more about the CEO of this company, please read on to find out about Ten Things You Didn't Know about Niraj Shah.
1. He Was in Fortune's 40 under 40
In the 2013 "40 under 40" list from Fortune magazine, Niraj Shah was listed 32nd. The magazine cited his rapidly-rising share prices, and the billion-dollar business that he built from scratch. They also praised his domain-consolidation strategy and subsequent rebranding and redirecting to the Wayfair website. It was quite an effective strategy, and is responsible for much of the organization's success.
2. He Became a Billionaire in 2017
Wayfair's shares increased to the point that he and co-founder Steve Conine walked away with $2.74 billion dollars in combined net worth. This means that each is worth approximately $1.37 billion - making him one of the 540 billionaires in the US. For perspective, this is literally one in a million people.
3. His Wife is an Entrepreneur Too
Jill Shah founded Jill's List in 2010. She designed the website to provide a place for unbiased, accurate reviews of alternative medicine practitioners. She ran the site for five years, before selling it in 2015. She ended up making the sale from her Boston office on April 15th - the same day as the Boston Marathon Bombing. On a brighter note, she now runs the Boston office of the company that purchased Jill's List from her (Mindbody).
4. He Hires for Traits
Niraj Shah has a hiring method that is not widely used in the corporate world. Rather than relying on a person's resume or experience, he looks at their skills and who they are as a person. He places far more precedence on intelligence, hard work, being a team-player, and being able to handle a quantitative method of thinking. The idea behind this is to hire people who are creative enough to come up with new ways to handle company problems.
5. He Won Entrepreneur of the Year
In 2010, the Wayfair CEO had not yet restructured his company. However, the Ernst & Young services firm (one of the "Big Four" in accounting) presented him with the 2010 Entrepreneur of the Year award for his work at CSN Stores. They must have seen some potential, because less than a decade later he has become a billionaire.

Niraj Shah - CEO of Wayfair
Shah grew up in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the son of immigrants from India.[3] His grandfather ran "steel manufacturing business in India, making pots and pans".[3] His father worked for General Electric as a mechanical engineer, and after his retirement, joined Wayfair early on, providing financial advice, and still works for the company.[3]
Shah graduated from Cornell University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in engineering in 1995.[1][4]
Shah co-founded Wayfair in 2002 with his Cornell classmate, Steve Conine[3], and has been its CEO since its inception.[1][5]
Shah was included in the Fortune list of "40 under 40" for 2013.[6]
In 2017, Shah became a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.[3]
In May 2017, Wayfair's share price rose above $70 per share, making Shah and his co-founder Steve Conine both billionaires. As of 2019, each had an estimated net worth of $2.3 billion.[7]

Q Research General #12703: Today Is End Of Pain Week 10 Edition
The co-founders of Wayfair, the online furniture retailer, have a history that makes for a sweet company backstory. Steve Conine and Niraj Shah met in high school in New Jersey and were magically reunited in college, finding themselves in the same dorm as freshmen at Cornell University. They failed at several joint projects before building Wayfair in 2002. Now they're billionaires.
For the past 24 hours, however, they've also been vilified on social media. Workers at the Boston-based firm have gone public with a petition signed by more than 500 Wayfair employees after they learned that Wayfair had sold $200,000 worth of mattresses and bunk beds to a charity that furnishes a detention camp for migrant children at the Texas border. The employees asked the company to cut off ties to that charity and donate profits made from the sales to RAICES, a Texas nonprofit that works for refugees and immigrant rights. They also called for a walkout at the company's headquarters today.
So far, the company has told employees in a letter posted online and published by the Boston Globe that it will not donate the profits or end its relationship with the contractor, Baptist Children's Family Services. (Quartz at Work contacted Wayfair and will update this post with any response.)
Dismissing its employees' concerns would be out of character for Wayfair's leadership. Shah, the CEO, is also chair of an eponymous foundation dedicated to child health and education. The Shah Foundation's goal, according to its website, is to "support innovative, transformative work in education, healthcare and community."
"We believe healthy, nourished, engaged children make better students," the website also states.
Last year, the foundation-where Nirah's wife, Jill, is president-pledged to pay for 50% of a $3 million program to build "My Way Cafe" kitchens serving fresh food inside several public schools in Boston.
On the foundation's website, both Shahs respond to the cute prompt "If I could wave a magic wand" in their bios.
Jill Shah has a warm message:
IF I COULD WAVE A MAGIC WAND:
Everyone would feel loved. Truly, confidently loved.
Niraj Shah writes:
IF I COULD WAVE A MAGIC WAND:
I would wipe out inefficiency in government and society. I would erase poverty and shift the world to an enlightened, post-money economy.
Critics would argue that Wayfair's chief executive has a curious sense of what enlightened means. (Quartz at Work has also contacted the Shah Foundation for comment.) Reports revealed this week that at one border camp for separated children "flu and lice outbreaks were going untreated, and children were filthy, sleeping on cold floors, and taking care of one another because of the lack of attention from guards."
On Twitter, some comments have supported Wayfair, arguing that the firm was assisting people already in a tough situation by supplying comfortable furnishings. However, the majority of statements-including one from senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, a Democratic presidential hopeful-say profiting from the crisis or supporting its governmental players is morally unjustifiable. She voiced her support for the employee activists on Twitter:
In 2017, Conine and Shah made a political statement of their own, quietly removing Trump Home products for sale on the Wayfair site. Not acceding to the workers' demands in this conflict would fly in the face of the Shah Foundation's mission and Conine's professed theory of management, as he once explained it in an interview with Boston Magazine:
My father used to always say, "Does he love me or does he not? He told me yesterday, but I forgot," but it was in reference to employees. You have to tell your employees that they are valuable every single day, even if it seems redundant. It's so important to keep your team excited about what they do, as well as about your company's overall mission to keep the business moving in the right direction.

Jill and Niraj Shah have a Shah Family Foundation, and I think looking into that is the next step. Unfortunately it started after they realized she had lost (about 2017), so they haven't been as brazen as our other family foundations of interest.

Not sure what you're getting at.
I'm talking about that article being highly suspect as misinformation as there was a glownigger fake released to throw /pol/ a fastball, it even used the same image.
The CEO of Wayfair is Niraj Shah, and I haven't found any information on this alleged Bill Hutcherson being connected to Wayfair or that this person in the image is even named Bill Hutcherson.
This theory was posted to twitter and /pol/ without substantial back up.
In a nutshell, it's glownigger misinformation article to discredit.

The thing about this image is that it was used in another glownigger article making a fake statement that Ghislaine had contracted co-vid.
When you look up the CEO of Wayfair Online it is Niraj Shah, a poo.
So chances are that this guy in the photo with Maxwell isn't this supposed Bill Hutcherson and that it's a false lead to discredit.
Misinformation is key to discrediting any honest investigation.

The Boston-based company became one of the biggest online purveyors of home goods in the U.S. practically overnight, with sales exploding to $916 million last year from $601 million in 2012.
Wayfair's massive growth comes more than a decade after its founding, when it was called CSN Stores and sold speaker and television stands on the website RacksAndStands.com.
Wayfair CEO Niraj Shah founded CSN with his Cornell classmate Steve Conine, in 2002. The generic name was chosen to avoid scaring off manufacturers who were burned by the dot-com crash, Shah said.

Wayfair CEO a Unicorn
according to Inc
Wayfair CEO and cofounder Niraj Shah is a true unicorn entrepreneur.
After noticing that consumers were unable to successfully shop online, Niraj took the opportunity to create a user-friendly e-commerce website to meet market demands.
This led him, along with his business partner Steve Conine, to launch the world's largest home retail website: Wayfair.
Creating this e-commerce empire took a great deal of determination, creativity and hard work – skills Niraj has mastered throughout his fascinating career.
Here, discover 10 inspring facts about Niraj Shah.
2. Niraj has been working with Wayfair cofounder Steve Conine since high school.
Niraj and Steve's friendship started long before they co-founded Wayfair.
The pair first met during a summer program at Cornell University as high school students. When they met again in college as engineering majors, Niraj and Steve became inseparable.
The two entrepreneurs then roomed together and eventually began several other e-commerce companies before striking it rich with Wayfair.
Niraj and Steve told NPR's "How I Built This" that their relationship has been able to withstand the test of time because they're both hardworking and dedicated – two traits that are critical when looking for a long lasting business partner.
doesnt this sound like the Google fags?
<During an orientation for new students at Stanford, he met Larry Page. They seemed to disagree on most subjects, but after spending time together they "became intellectual soul-mates and close friends."

Wayfair IPO marks the start of a new era for the Boston tech community
10/02/2014
"Currently, Wayfair has about 1,200 employees split between three buildings in Copley Square, which is as close to the heart of Boston as you can get.
With Wayfair in Boston and HubSpot well-anchored in Cambridge, two of the areas biggest Internet companies (with TripAdvisor in Newton being another) are in the city, close to the T, near bars and restaurants, and filled with employees who live in Boston.
"Being in the city lets you really be attractive to grab hold of a lot of the talent that gets educated in Boston," co-founder and chief executive Niraj Shah said.
Shah added that the city is much more vibrant than the suburbs. "You have an ecosystem and there are a lot of people nearby rather than in the remote office parks where you might not feel connected to the next campus over."
Wayfair didn't start the trend, but more and more tech and innovation companies are leaving the suburbs for the Seaport, Downtown Crossing and the Financial District, Cambridge, and Somerville. Autodesk is looking to escape Waltham for the city, while more and more VCs and service providers, like law firm Gunderson Dettmer, are relocating closer to downtown.
"It's the start of another cycle," Conine, Wayfair's co-founder and chief technology officer, said.
There's also another way in which Wayfair breaks the mold of what "traditional" Boston-area tech companies look like. Conine and Shah started building companies while taking entrepreneurial courses at Cornell, and continued for twenty years, bootstrapping what became Wayfair until they took venture funding just a few years ago.
Did you catch that? Something out of the norm?
No Harvard Business School connections, no MIT or Sloan School of Business roots-Shah and Conine are Cornell grads.
This might seem like it's not extraordinary. But consider how large a swath of Boston technology companies have strong connections to Harvard, MIT, and their business schools. I've heard more than one startup founder gripe that investment funding flows more easily between fellow HBS and Sloan alums than "outsiders."
Well, one thing is for sure, the outsiders and city folk that run Wayfair aren't slowing down. The company's stock was up 23 percent in early trading."

Wayfair IPO marks the start of a new era for the Boston tech community
10/02/2014
"When Wayfair's founders rang the New York Stock Exchange bell Thursday morning, they didn't just announce the company's arrival on the public market-they rang in a new era for the Greater Boston technology and innovation ecosystem.
Raising $304 million in its initial public offering (the company actually traded higher than expected starting at $35.25 this morning), the IPO is one of the biggest for a Boston-area technology company.
It also signals a historic shift for the local tech community.
During the golden age of the "Massachusetts Miracle" driven by innovators coming out of Harvard and MIT, the zone between Needham, Waltham, and Burlington on Route 128 was the epicenter of tech activity in this state, and to some degree the nation.
In the 1990s, Oracle, Intuit, and Microsoft joined other tech giants IBM, Digital Equipment, Wang Laboratories, Polaroid, and others, setting up major Boston offices along the Route 128 corridor.
Waltham, for instance, is still home to companies like Actifio, Bit9, and Constant Contact. But today, very few technology companies remain there and many of the venture capital firms that once populated the hills above the Cambridge Reservoir have moved into the city.
Wayfair, however, was born in co-founder Steve Conine's nursery in a brownstone in the South End. It hasn't moved more than a half mile from its first "office."
Currently, Wayfair has about 1,200 employees split between three buildings in Copley Square, which is as close to the heart of Boston as you can get.
With Wayfair in Boston and HubSpot well-anchored in Cambridge, two of the areas biggest Internet companies (with TripAdvisor in Newton being another) are in the city, close to the T, near bars and restaurants, and filled with employees who live in Boston.

2002 to 2006
Entrepreneurs Niraj Shah and Steve Conine founded Wayfair in August 2002, as a two-person company with a makeshift headquarters in Conine's nursery, in Boston, Massachusetts.[13] Both Shah and Conine hold Bachelor of Science degrees from Cornell University. The pair had run two previous companies-Simplify Mobile and iXL, a global consulting firm-before starting Wayfair.[14]
As of December 2018, Shah is the chief executive officer, and Shah and Conine share the chairman position.
Originally known as CSN Stores (the name is derived from a mix of Shah and Conine's initials), the company began with the website racksandstands.com, selling media stands and storage furniture.
In 2003, the company added patio and garden goods suppliers, three online stores, and more than a dozen employees, and relocated the headquarters into an office on Newbury Street, in Boston.
Over the next two years, the company expanded its catalog to include home décor; office, institutional, and kitchen and dining furniture and materials, home improvement goods; bed and bath materials; luggage; and lighting. In 2006, the company earned $100 million in sales.[15]
Been around since 2002.

Doing a digz on Wayfair and came across this wikileaks email.
Re: Personal Invitation to join us at Founders Forum New York October 15th-16th 2014
"We genuinely are really picky about who we invite as we want to get the absolute right mix of top-tier global entrepreneurs and founders in one room who actually get the opportunity to talk to each other."
Past Founders Forum guests include..
Niraj Shah - Co-Founder & CEO of Wayfair [Boston]
https://wikileaks.org/sony/emails/emailid/140086
Then I saw this guy as one of the confirmed guests.
Scott Harrison (Charity: Water)
He established a small core team in a tiny Manhattan apartment and created charity: water.
The organization set out on a big mission, to bring clean water to every person living without it, and an even bigger vision, to reinvent charity with an innovative 100% model and radical transparency, proving every single water project funded.
Thirteen years later, with the help of more than 1 million supporters worldwide, charity: water has raised $450 million and funded over 51,000 water projects in 28 countries. When completed, those projects will provide over 11 million people with clean, safe drinking water.

Wayfair operates five branded retail web sites: the main Wayfair site, Joss & Main, AllModern, Birch Lane, and Perigold.
Wayfair Inc. is an American e-commerce company that sells home goods. Formerly known as CSN Stores, the company was founded in 2002 and now sells many home furnishings and décor items and over ten million products from over 10,000 suppliers.[4] Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts,[5] Wayfair has offices and warehouses throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.[6]
Entrepreneurs Niraj Shah and Steve Conine founded Wayfair in August 2002, as a two-person company with a makeshift headquarters in Conine's nursery, in Boston, Massachusetts.[12] Both Shah and Conine hold Bachelor of Science degrees from Cornell University. The pair had run two previous companies-Simplify Mobile and iXL, a global consulting firm-before starting Wayfair.[13]
As of December 2018, Shah is the Chief Executive Officer and Shah and Conine share the Chairman position.
Investors are suing Wayfair, claiming the company's executives misled them about the company's value and actions, losing them money as the top brass cashed out.[32]

Conspiracy Extremism and Digital Complexity - Where to Start?
By Elise Thomas - 5th October 2020
1/2
As the global COVID-19 pandemic rolls on, conspiracy theories are fuelling protests, altercations between citizens and law enforcement, property damage and violent attacks around the world. As tensions continue to rise, and as conspiracy communities continue to spread and radicalise, the risk of violent extremist acts fuelled by conspiratorial beliefs is also increasing.
There is an urgent need for policymakers, law enforcement, traditional media and social media platforms to develop greater awareness and understanding of conspiracy extremism and to grapple with the difficult question of how to respond.
The link between extremist acts and conspiratorial beliefs is, of course, not new. Extremist ideologies throughout history have incorporated conspiratorial elements, for example, the still prominent and longstanding anti-Semitic conspiracy about a secret Jewish world order.
However, the rise of digital technology and the modern information ecosystem has fundamentally altered the nature of conspiracy movements and, therefore, also of conspiracy-linked extremism. Conspiracies spread differently now; communities form differently now; individuals radicalise, plan and commit acts of extremism differently now. It is important to understand how these dynamics operate to mitigate and respond to the risks they pose.
This is, of course, much more easily said than done. The chaotic and frequently incoherent nature of conspiracy narratives, the wide variations between different conspiracies and the groups and communities which form around them, and the speed with which those narratives and communities can shapeshift make it difficult to analyse conspiracies via the same frameworks applied to other forms of extremism.
With some exceptions, these are not organised groups. There is no clear dividing line between who is a 'member' and who is not. It's not even clear how they should be described - for example, is QAnon a cult? A movement? A meme, a hobby, an ideology, a belief system, a political faction? It has elements of all of these but fits none of them exactly. There are influential figures but no real leader or organising structure. The short-term tactics and targets shift on a weekly, sometimes daily basis; there is no clear long-term strategy or goal.
This difficulty has been exacerbated by the massive spike in conspiracy-related online activity since mid-March 2020. This has both expanded the reach of established conspiracy communities and disrupted them.
This disruption was evident in, for example, the 'Save the Children' protests held in the US in late August 2020. Although attendees at the protests waved QAnon signs and symbols, the protests were disavowed by many figures who were influential in the QAnon movement prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. They claimed the events were a "false flag" (figuratively, but probably also literally given the many QAnon flags waved at the rallies). Their objections seemed to have mattered little, however. This highlights how fluid the dynamics of conspiracy movements are and how swiftly power and influence shifts; and it underscores the decentralised and leaderless nature of these movements.
The narratives and ideologies underpinning conspiracy theories can shift just as unpredictably. In late June 2020, a single influential QAnon conspiracist sowed the seeds for a conspiracy narrative connecting the online homeware store Wayfair with human trafficking. The narrative incubated on Reddit's r/conspiracy board, before spilling out onto mainstream social media platforms with tens of thousands of posts and tweets, some of which received over a hundred thousand engagements. One Instagram account dedicated to the conspiracy accrued at least 21,000 followers in a matter of days. Wayfair's belated efforts to tamp down the claims over a week later did nothing but add fuel to the fire.
This completely unfounded conspiracy narrative led to widespread reputational damage on social media; harassment and personal targeting of Wayfair employees including CEO Niraj Shah; and the clogging up of hotlines, which hampered investigations into real child trafficking.
Fortunately, no violent acts have (yet) occurred in connection with this particular conspiracy narrative but the potential is clearly there. The Wayfair episode has distinct parallels with the Pizzagate shooting in 2016, in which a gunman stormed a pizza restaurant in the belief there were trafficked children being held in the (non-existent) basement. The speed and baffling incoherence with which conspiratorial movements identify and go after targets - who may not even have been aware the conspiracy existed until they become victims of it - presents a real challenge for countering the risks for acts of violence.
