After a Winter Deluge, California Rivers Are Too Dangerous to Enjoy
KERN COUNTY, Calif. - Gwyny Pett has been visiting the Kern River for decades, camping there as a girl and then taking her own children, now grown, to splash in shallows so calm they felt like a private pool. She has seen it in dry cycles like last year, when the river was difficult to explore not because of surging water, but because she turned her ankles on the exposed pebbles.
She has also seen the destructive power of the river during high-water years. And althoughPett,66, recently looked ready for a swim at a popular riverside campground - black bikini on, pool towel draped over her beach chair - there was no way she was getting in.
"I mean, this is dangerous," she said, gesturing at the water speeding past.
After a parade– of epic winter storms,== the Kern River and other major waterways fed by melting Sierra Nevada snow have become wild torrents - a transformation so dangerous that several counties in central California have prohibited people from entering the water.
Since April, at least 16 people have died or gone missing in rivers across the state, according to The Mercury News, including two young siblings who were swept away on the Kings River in Fresno County in May. On Wednesday, a kayaker died on the Kern River, about 20 miles upstream from the campground where Pett was sitting.
"There is a historic amount of water right now: faster, colder and more deadly than we've seen in recent years," said Brian Ferguson, a spokesperson for the Governor's Office of Emergency Services. "There is no amount of training or exercise that prepares a human body."
In the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada foothills, river swimming holes and rafting trips are a way of life each summer. The snowmelt-infused water can feel like nature's gift to inland residents who must cope with sweltering heat without the benefit of ocean breezes.
But people die every year because they underestimate the currents they cannot see, often without wearing life jackets or knowing how to swim. This year, officials are warning everyone to take heed, especially those who have safely dipped in a river during normal years and may feel overconfident.
"During COVID, a lot of people found the outdoors," said Mike Howard, the superintendent for the Auburn State Recreation Area, which includes two forks of the American River about 35 miles northeast of Sacramento. "But as they come to their favorite spot in June or on the Fourth of July, where swimming was relatively safe last year, this year is going to be very different."
At least three people have drowned on the American River this year. Howard said that the state recreation area now has swift water lifeguards at some areas, but the currents are too unsafe for them to swim after a visitor in distress.
"We're very focused on prevention," he said.
In Fresno County, as waters rose in March, officials closed the Kings and San Joaquin rivers to anyone except professional rafting companies and threatened violators with $225 fines. Tony Botti, a spokesperson for the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, said that compliance has been high.
"Unfortunately, the tragedy of losing two children reallywoke them up,"Botti said. "It's life over recreation."

Pedophile killed himself in Texas courtroom by drinking toxic amount of common food preservative, new report says
A man who died shortly after his guilty verdict was read inside a Texas courtroom last year committed suicide by consuming a toxic level of a common food preservative, a new report says.
On August 11, 2022, 57-year-old Edward Leclair was standing inside a courtroom in Denton, Texas. He was on trial for five counts of child sexual abuse. After just three and a half hours of deliberation, the jury had settled on a verdict: guilty. As the judge read the verdict, Leclair reportedly began to "chug" what appeared to be a "cloudy" liquid inside a water bottle.
Moments later, the bailiff found Leclair unconscious in his holding cell. Leclair was quickly rushed to the Medical City Denton hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 3 p.m. that same day.
Now, a new report from the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office has determined a cause of death. The "cloudy" liquid Leclair drank turned out to be sodium nitrite partially dissolved in water. Though sodium nitrite is a fairly common substance, often used as a food preservative for meat, large quantities of it can cause low blood pressure and limit the flow of oxygen throughout the body.
Security footage from the courthouse captured Leclair purchasing a bottle of water from a vending machine at around 7 a.m. on the day he died. His lawyer, Mike Howard, said at the time that Leclair likely knew what he was doing.
"Had [Leclair] waited another 30 seconds, he would have been in sheriff's custody and not had access to that bottled water," Howard said. "He wouldn't have been able to. So, you know, I think he knew."
Howard speculated that his client was motivated to kill himself because he faced a sentence of 100 years in prison. "[H]e made the decision to do what he did at the last moment," Howard said. The medical examiner has ruled Leclair's death a suicide.

Pedophile dies after drinking mystery liquid as sex abuse verdict is read
A Texas pedophile died this week after drinking a mysterious liquid from a water bottle as a jury found him guilty of child sexual assault, officials said.
Edward Leclair, 57, was on trial in Denton, Texas, for five counts of sexual abuse and had been free on bond until the verdict Thursday.
"As these verdicts were being read, he chugged a bottle of water he had at [the] counsel table," Denton County Assistant District Attorney Jamie Beck told CNN Friday, adding the liquid seemed cloudy.
"Our investigator noticed him chug the water," Beck said. "He told the bailiff he might want to go check on him. The bailiff did. He was unconscious in the holding cell."
"Shortly after entering the holdover cell, he started vomiting, and emergency services were called," Leclair's defense attorney, Mike Howard said.
Howard said Leclair had taken a "long drink from a water bottle" while listening to the verdict, but the attorney did not know what was in the bottle.
Medics tried to revive Leclair. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
An autopsy was ordered, and the cause of death is listed as pending.

Texas man convicted of child sexual assault dies after chugging from bottle as verdict is read
https://www.yahoo.com/news/texas-man-convicted-child-sexual-005828908.html
A Texas man charged with five counts of child sexual assault died after a jury convicted him and he chugged a bottle of liquid in the courtroom, his lawyer said Friday.
After the first count was read on Thursday afternoon and the Denton County jury returned a guilty verdict, Edward Leclair, 57, started drinking from a plastic water bottle filled with what appeared to be clear liquid, lawyer Mike Howard said.
"I looked over and noticed him drinking," Howard said. "His hand was shaking. At the time, I thought it was shaking because of the verdict. Then he kept drinking and drinking."
Assistant District Attorney Jamie Beck told the Denton Record-Chronicle the liquid appeared "cloudy." She did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
It isn't clear what was in Leclair's bottle.
Leclair, a former Navy mechanic and corporate recruiter, was indicted two years ago on five counts of sexual assault on a person between the age of 14 and 17. He said he was innocent of the charges, Howard said.
The conviction came after three-and-a-half hours of deliberations and Leclair faced a possible sentence that ranged from probation to 100 years, Howard said.

US Space Command Closely Tracking Large Chinese Rocket's Out-Of-Control Fall To Earth
The Pentagon and US Space Command are said to be tracking a large Chinese rocket which is set to reenter Earth's atmosphere at some point this coming weekend, likely "around May 8th" according to the latest DoD statement. Crucially, the concern is that the falling rocket's debris could land on inhabited places and pose a danger to people below, given that it is among the largest ever launces to make an uncontrolled and high speed re-entry into earth's atmosphere.
It's also the Chinese Long March 5B rocket's size - at 30 meters in length and weighing 22 tons - that poses the likelihood that an immense amount of debris could fall down to Earth's surface as opposed to be being burned up upon re-entry, as is typical with smaller rockets.
US Defense Department spokesman Mike Howard issued to following details in a Tuesday statement:
The rocket's "exact entry point into the Earth's atmosphere" can't be pinpointed until within hours of reentry, Howard said, but the 18th Space Control Squadron will provide daily updates on the rocket's location through the Space Track website. The rocket was used by the Chinese to launch part of their space station last week. While most space debris objects burn up in the atmosphere, the rocket's size - 22 tons - has prompted concern that large parts could reenter and cause damage if they hit inhabited areas.
This is something which, though very rare, has happened in the recent past. In May of 2020 a Chinese Long March 5B made a similarly uncontrolled re-entry which resulted in debris raining down on inhabited areas of the Ivory Coast.

This is something which, though very rare, has happened in the recent past. In May of 2020 a Chinese Long March 5B made a similarly uncontrolled re-entry which resulted in debris raining down on inhabited areas of the Ivory Coast. At one point during that 2020 incident it was feared the debris could fall over the North American mainland, but it had re-entered over the Atlantic with debris reaching the African coast, as photos at the time showing pieces of internal rocket components scattered across a village confirmed...

- Jonathan McDowell (@planet4589) May 12, 2020
Currently Long March 5B rocket, which was launched on April 28 in order to send key components to China's new next-generation space station, is orbiting the globe about 15 times a day at up to 18,000mph. This means any tiny change in trajectory can drastically alter its final re-entry point.
One Harvard astrophysicist, Jonathan McDowell, has been widely quoted as saying there's very minimal risk that rocket parts could actually fall on people. "I don't think people should take precautions. The risk that there will be some damage or that it would hit someone is pretty small not negligible, it could happen but the risk that it will hit you is incredibly tiny. And so I would not lose one second of sleep over this on a personal threat basis," he said. The scientist added: "There are much bigger things to worry about."
