Tesla co-founder and CTO JB Straubel stepping down
Tesla co-founder and CTO JB Straubel is stepping down from his day-to-day role as an executive at the automaker, CEO Elon Musk announced during a conference call with analysts Wednesday.
Drew Baglino, vice president of technology, will take over his duties, Musk said. Straubel will stay on in a senior advisor role.
"I want to thank JB for his fundamental role in creating and building Tesla," Musk said during the call. "If we hadn't had lunch in 2003, Tesla wouldn't exist, basically," Musk added.
Straubel described his time at Tesla as an adventurous 16 years.
"I'm not disappearing, and I just wanted to make sure that people understand that this was not some, you know, lack of confidence in the company or the team or anything like that," Straubel said, adding that he loves the company.
Straubel's role at Tesla cannot be understated. The executive was responsible for some of the company's most important technology, notably around batteries. His understated yet steady presence along with his technological acumen gave provided stability even when its CEO became embroiled in controversy.
His departure is the latest in a long string of high-profile executives to leave Tesla in the past year, most recently Steve McManus, a vice president in charge of engineering for car interiors and exteriors at Tesla, who joined Apple. Two other former Tesla executives, Michael Schwekutsch, and chief engineer Doug Field, have also left to join Apple.
Straubel is involved in another company called Redwood Materials, which emerged in 2017. An SEC filing in 2017 a $2 million initial investment in the Redwood City, Calif.-based company that describes itself at its site as focused on "advanced technology and process development for materials recycling, remanufacturing, and reuse."
The filing lists Straubel and Andrew Stevenson, the former head of special projects at Tesla, as executive officers. Stevenson is now CFO at Redwood Materials.

Tesla Reports Loss of $400+ Million, Co-Founder Leaves Company
Tesla shares dropped significantly following the release of a lower-than-expected earnings report, which included a loss for the quarter of $408 million, along with the departure of the company's co-founder and Chief Technology Officer J.B. Straubel.
CNBC reports that Tesla's Q2 earnings release resulted in a significant drop in Tesla stock price with an overall decline of 10 percent in extended trading. The drop continued into Thursday trading, Tesla is down 14 percent at the time of this writing. Refinitiv compiled a summary of what Tesla posted versus what analysts expected, it reads as follows:
Loss per share on an adjusted basis: $1.12 vs. 40 cents expected
Revenue: $6.35 billion versus $6.41 billion expected
Despite falling short of expectations, Tesla reaffirmed full-year delivery guidance stating that the company still believes it will sell 360,000 to 400,000 vehicles in 2019 mostly consisting of Model 3 sedans. In the first six months of 2019, Tesla delivered approximately 158,200 vehicles to customers and still has to deliver more than 200,000 in the last six months of the year to hit the low-end of its projected figures.
Tesla alleges it has a weekly run-rate of 7000 Model 3 cars and plans to produce 10,000 Model 2s per week by the end of 2019. Tesla stated in its second-quarter letter that it plans to improve production at existing factories in order to make high-volume Model 3 sales possible. While sale of the firm's Powerwall and Powerpack energy storage products increased, sale of its solar energy products continued their decline. Tesla combines sales of all energy generation and storage product into one figure which came to $368.2 million in revenue, a two percent decline over the same time period last year.
What didn't help the poor earnings report is the announcement of the departure of Tesla co-founder and Chief Technology Officer J.B. Straubel. Drew Baglino, vice president of technology, will be replacing Straubel as CTO while Straubel will stay on in an advisory role.
The announcement was made on a conference call with analysts on Wednesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk discussed his departure stating: "I want to thank JB for his fundamental role in creating and building Tesla. If we hadn't had lunch in 2003, Tesla wouldn't exist, basically." Straubel stated that his time at Tesla had been an adventurous 16 years and added: "I'm not disappearing, and I just wanted to make sure that people understand that this was not some, you know, lack of confidence in the company or the team or anything like that."
Straubel is the latest in a long line of executive departures at Tesla, recently the firm's vice president in charge of engineering for car interiors and exteriors, Steve McManus, left the firm to join Apple. Tesla executive, Michael Schwekutsch, and chief engineer Doug Field also recently departed the firm to join Apple.

Tesla loses another exec: HR vice president and head of diversity Felicia Mayo
Tesla vice president of HR and head of diversity, Felicia Mayo, has departed the company. Mayo, who worked at Tesla for almost two years, is one of a few black women to rise to executive ranks in Silicon Valley.
Tesla vice president of human resources and head of diversity Felicia Mayo has left the company.
A company spokesperson told CNBC, "We'll miss Felicia and would like to thank her for her hard work over the last two years and wish her all the best in the future. We have a talented HR team in place that will continue to report into our VP of People & Places and will remain focused on advancing our mission and making Tesla a great place to work."
Tesla is known as a mission-driven and hard-driving workplace with significant pressure to hit ambitious goals and deadlines meted out by CEO Elon Musk. Among other things, these conditions have led to a high level of churn among Tesla executives, in recent years.
Mayo is one of a few black women leaders to break the glass ceiling and rise to executive ranks in a large, Silicon Valley tech firm. Less than 0.5% of Silicon Valley tech leadership positions are held by black women, according to 2018 statistics from the Kapor Center.
She previously served as vice president of global talent acquisition and diversity at Juniper Networks, then held the role of VP of Human Resources at Tesla for less than two years. She reported to Tesla's vice president of people and places, Kevin Kassekert, and CEO Elon Musk.
During her tenure, Tesla expanded its operations internationally, began manufacturing its Model 3 electric sedan in high volumes, and implemented controversial strategies ranging from store closures and other restructuring efforts, to giving employees a discount on Tesla vehicles, if they agreed to use and give feedback on beta versions of the company's Full Self Driving software.
Mayo's departure follows the resignation of other Tesla executives in the last year, including:
Tesla's former chief people officer, Gaby
Toledano
General Counsel, Todd Maron
VP of Legal, Phil Rothenberg
CFO Deepak Ahuja (who announced his
retirement at the end of a Tesla earnings call
in January this year)
VP of Engineering, Michael Schwekutsch

Tesla loses its head of growth and referral program
Tesla's head of growth and the executive behind the automaker's owner referral program has left the company this week, according to sources talking to Electrek.
We reported on Praveen Arichandran back in 2016 when Tesla hired him from Facebook in order to build a growth team for the company.
Arichandran holds degrees in economics and computer engineering from the University of Waterloo.
According to his LinkedIn profile, he started his career at AMD and after a stint at BMO, he joined Facebook in 2011 and held several roles in the company's growth team until joining Tesla in January 2016. At just 25 years old, he was Tesla's youngest executive at the time.
At Tesla, he was Director of Growth Programs, which included overseeing the owner referral program, which was recently briefly canceled before being launched again earlier this month.
The referral program was extremely successful in generating sales for Tesla, but it got a bit out of control when Model 3 was added to the program. Tesla ended up having to give away over 80 new Roadsters for free and give significant discounts on many more new supercars.
CEO Elon Musk cited high costs when shutting down the program earlier this month and the team relaunched it with much more reasonable prizes just a week ago.
Sources familiar with the matter told Electrek that Arichandran quit Tesla this week. He has a new job lined up to be announced shortly.
He is the latest in a series of Tesla executives to leave lately, like VP of Engineering in charge of powertrains Michael Schwekutsch and CFO Deepak Ahuja, among dozens more over the last year.
To be fair, the turnover rate is fairly high in Silicon Valley and even more so in the sectors that Tesla operates in.
Tesla has yet to respond to a request for comment and Arichandran has declined to comment until his position at the new company is announced.
