Washington's point man on anti-Russia sanctions warned India against deeper cooperation with Moscow

A top US national security official has called on India to scale back its economic and military ties with Russia,warning of "consequences" for any nation that helps Moscow avoid a recent wave of Western sanctions.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with Indian officials on Thursday, Washington's deputy national security adviser for international economicsDaleep Singhurged New Delhi not to boost Russian energy imports, and to avoid any moves that might "undermine" the US dollar.

"What we would not like to see is a rapid acceleration of India's imports from Russia as it relates to energy or any other any other exports that are currently being prohibited by the US," he said, adding that the United States is "very keen for all countries, especially our allies and partners, not to create mechanisms that prop up the ruble and that attempt to undermine the dollar-based financial system." (Him saying that out loud, is going to be taking as a challenge of how many countries can now get on board to undermine the dollar! These people are stupid)

Asked what those consequences could entail, the adviser declined to elaborate, saying that was part of "private discussions that I'm not going to share publicly."

Singh's remarks followed reports that Moscow and New Delhi are currently working out a rupee-ruble payment system, which would allow the two nations to conduct bilateral trade in each others' currencies. India also recently agreed to buy a quantity of Russian crude oil at a discount, an unpopular decision with the US and some allies, who have embarked on a punitive sanctions campaign designed to isolate Russia's economy and wreck the ruble.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also visited the Indian capital on Thursday, coinciding with official meetings with Singh as well as UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.

Though American, Australian and British officials have criticized India's refusal to go along with the sanctions spree, US State Department spokesman Ned Price insisted that Washington is not "seeking to change" any nation's "relationship with the Russian Federation," citing India in particular.

"What we are seeking to do, whether it is in the context of India or other partners and allies around the world, is to do all we can" to ensure that "the international community is speaking in unison," Price added in comments on Lavrov's trip.

While condemning Russia's "needless war" on Ukraine, Singh said his visit to India was "in a spirit of friendship to explain the mechanisms of our sanctions," but nonetheless warned that there would be "consequences [for] countries that actively attempt to circumvent or backfill" those penalties. Often portrayed as the "architect" of the US sanctions regime on Moscow, Singh went on to citegrowing ties between Russia and China, cautioning that their partnership could have major consequences for India, which has long been locked in a territorial dispute with Beijing along the Sino-Indian border.

"If you set that against the reality that China and Russia have now declared a no limits partnership, and that Russia has said that China is its most important strategic partner, by extension, that has real implications for India," he said, claiming that Moscow would not "come running to India's defense" in the event of a Chinese incursion.

It will take more than a ceasefire in Ukraine for London to lift its sanctions against Russia, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told his cabinet on Tuesday, insisting that Moscow must fully alter its policy towards its neighbor.

Pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin "must be increased both through further economic measures and providing military aid to ensure Russia changes course completely," Johnson told his ministers, according to his spokesman.

Foreign Minister Liz Truss had told the Sunday Telegraph earlier this week that sanctions "should only come off with a full ceasefire and withdrawal, but also commitments that there will be no further aggression."

Johnson's comments came as Russian and Ukrainian negotiators met in Turkey to discuss the "practical phase" of talks, according to Russian Deputy Minister of Defense Alexander Fomin. He told reporters that the parties are preparing an agreement on the "neutrality and non-nuclear status of Ukraine" and providing Kiev security guarantees in return.

As a sign of good faith, Russia intends to "drastically" de-escalate military activity near Kiev and Chernihiv in northern Ukraine, Fomin also announced. However, there was no talk of a ceasefire of any kind.

London and Washington have led the way in imposing a wide-ranging embargo on Russian goods, services, property, bank reserves, transactions, individuals, and government officials.

Though the US insists that "the world" has sanctioned Russia, the embargo has been limited to Washington's NATO allies, plus Australia, Japan, and South Korea.

Kremlin Reveals Why Russia Won't Observe Ceasefire Amid Talks With Ukraine

Russia will not implement a pause in its invasion of Ukraine while peace negotiations with the Kyiv government are underway, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday.

"You see, a pause in the operation, any pause, is used by the nationalist units to regroup, used to continue attacks against the Russian military," Peskov told state-run media, alleging that Russian troops have faced attacks from such groups in Ukraine "on multiple occasions."

Ukrainian and Western officials have previously accused Russia of using the peace talks to regroup and resupply its invasion. UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss earlier this month said that Russia was "lying, lying, and lying" by agreeing to the talks, describing them as a "smokescreen" and a "distraction."

The Kremlin on Monday said that talks between Russia and Ukraine haven't yielded significant progress despite multiple rounds of negotiations.

Moscow has accused Kyiv of stalling peace talks by making proposals unacceptable for Russia. Ukraine has said it is willing to negotiate but will not surrender or accept Russian ultimatums. More than a week ago, Russian and Ukrainian negotiators said that there was progress made during the talks, although no details were provided.

"For us to speak of a meeting between the two presidents, homework has to be done. Talks have to be held and their results agreed upon," Peskov remarked Monday. "There has been no significant progress so far."

Peskov also reiterated claims that Russia was showing more willingness than Ukrainian negotiators to work toward an agreement at the talks.

Top Ukrainian officials rejected a Russian demand to give up the city of Mariupol, which has come under heavy Russian bombardment since the start of the Feb. 24 conflict, with Ukraine accusing Moscow of committing war crimes in the area.

The Government Information Cell is reportedly reaching Russian social media users to show the UK's view of the conflict in Ukraine

Britain is utiLizing its new so-called counter-disinformation unit to buy ads on Russian social media to disseminate London's view on the conflict in Ukraine, the Telegraph claimed on Saturday. The Government Information Cell (GIC) is operated between the Ministry of Defence and the Foreign Office, the first such unit since the end of the Cold War. The social media platform mentioned in the article has refuted reports that it showed British government ads.

The unit's "crucial audiences" are in Russia and Ukraine, the article highlights. After Moscow blocked Twitter and Facebook, the Telegraph reports, the GIC has turned to advertising agencies to"target" Russian users on sites such as VK, the country's most popular domestic social media platform. The tech firm's press service has already refuted the claim, telling Russian news site RBC that "all ads go through verification and have to follow VK's and Russia's law." The website rules in any case prohibit political ads.

The tactic is described as reaching the devices of people "who would never have thought to seek out the view of the British Government." Some 35 full-time staff were reportedly pulled from numerous departments, including the Foreign Office, Home Office, Ministry of Defence, Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, and the Cabinet Office.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Liz Truss revealed theunit's creation in late February, days before Moscow attacked its neighbor. Back then she outlined in an interview with the Mail that the unit's task is to expose and fight "false information." Details of how the unit is countering supposed "Kremlin disinformation" were given in the Telegraph's report.

The unit identifies so-called "Russian disinformation," brands it as false and then creates "new content" to be spread online. It also apparently distributes reports to NATO and EU members, along with Australia and New Zealand. The unit further coordinates with embassies abroad to translate content around the world.

The article gave an example of the sort of content the unit disseminates. One of the videos from late February involves Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressing Russians in their own language saying that "I do not believe this war is in your name." The unit claims that more than eight million people viewed this video, according to the Telegraph. VK's audience is nearly 79.3 million as of October 2021.

An unnamed person dubbed an "ally of Ms Truss" told the newspaper that the Foreign Secretary believed that "ditching our Cold War anti-propaganda capability was a mistake," and that this unit is a restoration of that.

In 1948 during the Cold War-era Foreign Office had a covert unit called the Information Research Department (IRD) created to spread anti-Soviet and anti-communist views. It was disbanded in 1977 by then-Foreign Secretary David Owen. The IRD is thought to have operated alongside MI6 and the BBC's World Service. Among other controversial dimensions, according to declassified documents, the British propaganda campaign incited the mass slaughter of communists in Indonesia in the 1960s. The unit was also involved in undermining the Irish Republican Army during the war in Northern Ireland and in countering the 'Black Power' movement in the Caribbean.

British-Iranian prisoner released home after UK negotiates payment of $500 million to Iran

A British-Iranian woman held prisoner in Iran for nearly six years has been freed and is returning home to the United Kingdom after the U.K. government negotiated to pay a historic debt the Iranian government claimed was owed to the Islamic theocracy.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a charity worker with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, was imprisoned in Iran in 2016 after the authoritarian regime accused her of being a spy and of plotting to overthrow the government. She and her family denied the charges, insisting she was on vacation with her daughter to visit family in Tehran.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe spent nearly five years in prison before she was released to house arrest in her parents' home, the Washington Post reports.

Iranian state media reported Wednesday that Zaghari-Ratcliffe and another dual national, Anousheh Ashouri, left the country after the U.K. government paid more than $500 million to Teharn, according to Reuters.

That money was part of a debt Iran's theocratic rulers claimed the British government owed after the shah of Iran purchased 1,750 Chieftain tanks and other weapons from the United Kingdom in the 1970s. But the U.K.'s International Military Services never delivered those weapons because the Islamic Revolution of 1979 toppled the U.S.-backed Shah. The order was canceled even though the previous Iranian government had paid in advance for it, and the Islamic regime that replaced the shah's government has since demanded the repayment of those funds.

Richard Ratcliffe, Nazanin's husband, who has tirelessly protested and advocated for his wife's release, had previously accused Iran of using his wife as a political hostage in the country's dispute over the debt.

U.K. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss confirmed in a statement Wednesday that "we have also settled the IMS debt" after announcing Zaghari-Ratcliffe's release.

The British government has denied that the two issues are related.

Earlier this year, however, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson did not deny there were efforts to negotiate Zaghari-Ratcliffe's release by settling the debt dispute with Iran.

On Feb. 9, British member of Parliament Tulip Siddiq said she had learned of a deal signed between the U.K. government and Iranian authorities in the summer of 2021 "that would have resulted in the payment of the ?400m that we owe Iran and the release of my constituent Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe," but that deal had fallen through, according to Sky News.

Siddiq asked Johnson to meet with her and Richard Ratcliffe to explain why the deal had collapsed.

"The International Military Services, or IMS, debt is difficult to settle and square away for all sorts of reasons to do with sanctions. But we will continue to work on it and I will certainly make sure that we have another meeting with Richard Ratcliffe in due course," Jonson said in response, suggesting the IMS debt was in-fact part of the negotiations to secure Zaghari-Ratcliffe's release.

Foreign Secretary Truss said in her statement that resolving the IMS debt payment and securing the release of detained British nationals were "my top priorities" upon assuming office in September 2021.

"Last month I spoke twice to Iranian Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian in a final push to bring negotiations to a successful conclusion. Our officials then held a last round of negotiations to sign off an agreement allowing Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori to return to the UK, and Morad Tahbaz to be released on furlough to his house in Tehran," Truss said.

"The IMS debt has been settled in full compliance with UK and international sanctions and all legal obligations. These funds will be ring-fenced solely for the purchase of humanitarian goods."

There is currently no legal structure in Israel that would allow for Israeli sanctions on assets and citizens of a state that is not defined by law as an enemy country.

Such a law could theoretically be passed in the future.

Moreover, Israel cannot bar Israeli citizens like Roman Abramovich from entering the country if there is no arrest warrant out for them, nor can it legally confiscate property in Israel.

Abramovich, who is under UK sanctions, was spotted at Ben Gurion Airport's VIP terminal on Monday evening, leaving Israel for Russia after apparently spending less than 24 hours in the country. A Twitter account that tracks the movement of Abramovich's six aircraft showed that a Gulfstream G650 belonging to Abramovich landed in Tel Aviv at around 9 p.m. local time Sunday, having taken off from Moscow.

UK sanctions 386 Russian MPs over Ukraine war

London has followed the US and EU in sanctioning lawmakers who supported the recognition of Donetsk's and Lugansk's independence

The UK government imposed sanctions on 386 members of Russia's State Duma on Friday, targeting all lawmakers who voted for recognizing the sovereignty of Ukraine's breakaway republics, Lugansk and Donetsk. Moscow's formal recognition of the two republics served as a "pretext" for the subsequent Russian offensive, the Foreign Office said.

"We're targeting those complicit in Putin's illegal invasion of Ukraine and those who support this barbaric war. We will not let up the pressure and will continue to tighten the screw on the Russian economy through sanctions," Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said, announcing the sanctions package.

"Together with our allies, we stand firmly beside our Ukrainian friends. We will continue to support Ukraine with humanitarian aid, defensive weapons, and diplomatic work to isolate Russia internationally."

The restrictions include travel bans and UK asset freezes for all the affected lawmakers, should they have bank accounts or property under London's jurisdiction. It brings the number of UK-sanctioned Russian MPs to 400, or almost 90% of the State Duma's total of 450 seats. The US and the EU have already placed restrictions on other Russian lawmakers, alongside severe sanctions on the country's financial sector and its senior officials.

The sanctions were imposed in response to Moscow's military operation against its neighbor launched in late February, which followed a seven-year standoff over Ukraine's failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, and Russia's eventual recognition of the two Donbass republics. German- and French-brokered proposals had been designed to regularize the status of those regions within the Ukrainian state.

Russia has now demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev insists the Russian offensive was completely unprovoked and has denied claims it was planning to retake the two republics by force.

This year's guest list also underscores how some leaders inside the establishment wing of the Republican Party and their allies on the right are increasingly eager to move on from Trump and loosen his grip on the conservative movement.

One of the key speakers at this week's gathering will be Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has been working behind the scenes to recruit candidates who come from a more traditional Republican mold, in terms of both policy positions and rhetoric, as he works to reclaim the Senate majority later this year in the midterm elections.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, who Trump has harshly criticized for refusing to endorse his efforts to decertify President Joe Biden's 2020 win in the state, will also speak at the forum, according to the schedule. McConnell repeatedly attempted to recruit Ducey to jump into Arizona's Senate race, but the governor declined to do so.

And instead of celebrating Trump, like the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando last month, this year's AEI World Forum will feature Democrats alongside congressional Republican officials and possible contenders for the party's 2024 presidential nomination.

One of those Democrats is Brian Deese, Mr. Biden's top economic adviser. Deese is slated to appear in front of the World Forum audience on Friday, March 11, giving the White House a rare private platform in front of influential GOP donors and business leaders. Deese will be in conversation with AEI's James Pethokoukis for a breakfast discussion, "An Interview with the Director of the National Economic Council."

The two people familiar with the event noted that AEI has previously hosted Democrats at the World Forum, including economic officials from the Obama White House.

Jesse Lee, a senior communications adviser to the National Economic Council, said Sunday in a statement, "The Biden White House has successfully found common ground on things like the bipartisan infrastructure law and competitiveness legislation by reaching out to stakeholders across the spectrum. We will continue to talk to anybody who has an interest in collaborating toward our goal of building long term growth that benefits all Americans."

A spokesman for AEI declined to comment. A spokesperson for Trump did not respond to a request for comment.

AEI is currently led by Robert Doar, a mild-mannered Republican policy expert on poverty who has worked for Republicans as well as for Michael Bloomberg, who is currently a Democrat but has in the past been a registered Republican and independent. Doar worked in the Bloomberg administration when Bloomberg was an independent and the mayor of New York.

In 2019, the AEI World Forum drew attention when it was reported that then-Vice President Mike Pence was sharply questioned by former Vice President Dick Cheney about the Trump administration's foreign policy, highlighting how various players in AEI's orbit have long been uncomfortable with elements of Trump's populist and nationalist policies.

It is unclear whether Pence was invited to the 2022 event.

Conservative Trump critics will also be featured during various Sea Island sessions this week. AEI fellow and veteran columnist Jonah Goldberg, who recently departed Fox News, is listed several times on the schedule. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, a vocal critic of Trump who has warned fellow Republicans against "whitewashing" last year's attack on the Capitol, will speak on Thursday. Hogan has expressed interest in running for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.

But Trump allies will be present as well. Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, who has been outspoken about her support for the former president, and Senator Rick Scott of Florida, who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee and has remained politically close to Trump, will both appear.

Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, another potential 2024 presidential candidate, Senator Susan Collins of Maine, and retiring Senator Rob Portman of Ohio will also appear.

The people familiar with the event cautioned that some scheduled speakers may drop out in the coming days due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, an ally of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is scheduled to attend and speak, according to the schedule. But it is uncertain if she will end up making the event.

Trump, meanwhile, is scheduled to hold a rally in Florence, South Carolina, about 250 miles to the north of Sea Island, on March 12.

Russia's security proposals ought to be welcomed in the West, writes John Pilger. But who understands their significance when all the people are told is that Putin is a pariah?

Marshall McLuhan's prophecy that "the successor to politics will be propaganda" has happened. Raw propaganda is now the rule in Western democracies, especially the U.S. and Britain

On matters of war and peace, ministerial deceit is reported as news. Inconvenient facts are censored, demons are nurtured. The model is corporate spin, the currency of the age. In 1964, McLuhan famously declared, "The medium is the message." The lie is the message now.

But is this new? It is more than a century since Edward Bernays, the father of spin, invented "public relations" as a cover for war propaganda. What is new is the virtual elimination of dissent in the mainstream.

The great editor David Bowman, author of The Captive Press, called this "a defenestration of all who refuse to follow a line and to swallow the unpalatable and are brave." He was referring to independent journalists and whistle blowers, the honest mavericks to whom media organizations once gave space, often with pride. The space has been abolished.

The war hysteria that has rolled in like a tidal wave in recent weeks and months is the most striking example. Known by its jargon, "shaping the narrative," much if not most of it is pure propaganda.

The No-Evidence Rule
The Russians are coming. Russia is worse than bad. Putin is evil, "a Nazi like Hitler," salivated the Labour MP Chris Bryant. Ukraine is about to be invaded by Russia - tonight, this week, next week. The sources include an ex CIA propagandist who now speaks for the U.S. State Department and offers no evidence of his claims about Russian actions because "it comes from the U.S. Government."

The no-evidence rule also applies in London. Vladimir Putin refers to the "genocide" in the eastern Donbass region of Ukraine. Following the coup in Ukraine in 2014 - orchestrated by former U.S. President Barack Obama's "point person" in Kyiev, Victoria Nuland - the coup regime, infested with neo-Nazis, launched a campaign of terror against Russian-speaking Donbass, which accounts for a third of Ukraine's population.

Overseen by CIA Director John Brennan in Kyiev, "special security units" coordinated savage attacks on the people of Donbass, who opposed the coup. Video and eyewitness reports show bussed fascist thugs burning the trade union headquarters in the city of Odessa, killing 41 people trapped inside. The police are standing by. Obama congratulated the "duly elected" coup regime for its "remarkable restraint."

In the U.S. media the Odessa atrocity was played down as "murky" and a "tragedy" in which "nationalists" (neo-Nazis) attacked "separatists" (people collecting signatures for a referendum on a federal Ukraine). Fourteen French Foreign Legionnaires of Ukrainian origin have reportedly been arrested in Paris on suspicion that they were traveling to fight for their native country against Russia.

Police stopped a Ukraine-bound bus on Tuesday evening and found that 14 of the 30 passengers were Foreign Legion soldiers, France's TF1 media outlet reported. The 16 civilians were released and investigators found that five of the Ukrainian-born legionnaires had been absent from their units without permission. The other nine soldiers had been given leave for 15 days to go to Poland and find family members who have fled Ukraine.

Neither the deserters nor the military personnel on leave were allowed to go to Ukraine. Those who were granted time off to travel to Eastern Europe were prohibited from entering Ukraine under a protocol that the Legion has had in place since Russia's war with Kiev began.

The bus was allowed to resume its journey after passenger identities were checked. Police did a thorough search of the vehicle for weapons and found only blankets and "basic equipment," according to the media report.

NATO member nations have allowed civilians to fight for Ukraine as volunteers. In fact, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has encouraged Britons to join the fight. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on Saturday forming an international legion to fight alongside government forces.

However, the US and other NATO members have pledged not to send their own troops to fight in Ukraine, apparently seeking to avoid an escalation into a wider war with Russia. Moscow launched its invasion last week, pledging to "demilitarize and denazify" Ukraine.

About 700 of France's Foreign Legion members are originally from Ukraine. The force is a branch of the French Army and has about 8,000 men.

Denmark to allow citizens fight in Ukraine

Copenhagen has said that Danes are free to "contribute directly" to the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine

Copenhagen has revealed it will allow Danish nationals to join an international military force Kiev plans to set up to aid its own military in the conflict with Russia.

"It's a choice that anyone can make. This goes for all Ukrainians who live here, but also for others who think they can contribute directly to the conflict," Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told a press conference on Sunday.

"There is nothing at first sight that would legally prevent someone from going to Ukraine to participate in the conflict, on the Ukrainian side," Frederiksen added. Earlier, the PM took part in a massive protest against Moscow's operation in front of the Russian embassy in Copenhagen, telling the crowd that "it is all of you and all of Europe who are threatened by Russia."

It comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the creation of Ukraine's International Legion of Territorial Defense that would make it possible for foreigners to join its ranks and fight alongside the Ukrainian military against Russia's and Donbass's forces.

The Danish prime minister is not the first to support the idea. Earlier on Sunday, the UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss also said she would "absolutely" support Brits, who would choose to join the military action on the side of Ukraine.

"I do support that. Of course, that is something that people can make their own decisions about," she told BBC's Sunday Morning show, adding that Ukraine fights for "freedom and democracy" for the "whole of Europe."

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba subsequently announced that volunteers should contact Ukraine's diplomatic missions in their respective countries.

On Thursday, Moscow launched a large-scale military operation to "demilitarize" and "de-Nazify" Ukraine, according to the Kremlin. Zelensky referred to the "special operation" as a "war against Europe," urging everyone willing to join the fight to "stand side by side" with Ukrainians. The western nations have responded to Russia's operation by imposing tough sanctions on Moscow and vowing to supply Ukraine with lethal weapons.

Mr Biden told reporters the White House believed Russia was "engaged in a false flag operation to have an excuse to go in".

The U.K. Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office gave relatively little information about the intelligence unveiled Saturday other than to say that the Russian government was considering trying to make a Russia-leaning former member of Ukraine's parliament, Yevhen Murayev, the country's new leader.

"The information being released today shines a light on the extent of Russian activity designed to subvert Ukraine, and is an insight into Kremlin thinking," U.K. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said in a statement, calling on Russia to de-escalate and pursue a path of diplomacy.

The level of cooperation between Moscow and London risks going "below zero," Russia's Minister of Defense Sergey Shoigu warned during a meeting on Friday. His British counterpart, Ben Wallace, called the negotiations in Moscow "constructive."

The first meeting of the defense ministers in years, it came amid a crisis over Ukraine, with Western countries repeatedly accusing Russia of an alleged plan to invade Ukraine. Moscow categorically denies these claims.

"The situation in Europe is becoming more and more tense, and it is by no means our fault," Shoigu said. However, according to Wallace, while the discussion had been "constructive and frank," there was "still [a] considerable way to go" between the two sides.

"The disposition of the Russian forces that we see - over 100,000 in both Belarus and Ukraine - obviously gives that size of force the ability to do a whole range of actions, including an invasion of a neighboring country at any time," he explained.

During his visit to Russia, Wallace also laid down flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and, accompanied by Shoigu, visited an exhibition on cooperation between the Allies in WWII.

Speaking to journalists at a press conference following the talks in the Russian capital on Thursday, Lavrov said that the exchange had been "like a deaf person talking to a mute," and that the sides had struggled to find common ground. "Nobody is hearing each other, and unfortunately our efforts to explain ourselves have not been heard."

Truss used the meeting to urge the Kremlin "to take the path of diplomacy" and argued that "a war in Ukraine would be disastrous for the Russian and Ukrainian people and for European security."

Lavrov hit back, however, saying that "we have sued for diplomacy for all these years and we will continue to do so." According to him, "Russia has been cheated and wronged for many years, many times, when it comes to agreements and obligations from other states."

London has sounded the alarm repeatedly in recent weeks, warning that a buildup of Russian troops along the shared frontier with Ukraine could be a prelude to a full-blown invasion. Truss doubled down on threats of sanctions, saying that were Moscow to order an offensive, the response from Western nations would cripple the country's economy.

"Russia must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as Russia freely signed up to do in the 1994 Budapest memorandum," Truss told Lavrov. "If these principles are respected, I believe that in today's talks, we can make progress to strengthen security for all."

The Russian foreign minister reiterated Moscow's position that it has no aggressive intentions in the region: "Some are saying we're waiting for the ground to freeze in Ukraine so that Russians tanks can move forward, well, this is the frozen ground between us and our British counterparts. Either our counterparts aren't aware of the facts, or they're ignoring them," he went on.

He also hit out at Truss' suggestion, raised by journalists, that Moscow is seeking to "threaten" its neighbor by amassing a reported 100,000 troops close to the border. "We don't want to threaten anyone," he insisted. "We're the ones being threatened!"

At the same time, the veteran envoy said that decisions by the UK and US to withdraw diplomatic staff and their families from Kiev over fears of a conflict were without foundation. "Now we're thinking maybe the UK or US is planning something as they're advising their staff to leave."

Western leaders have cited intelligence reports in recent weeks as confirming that Moscow could be set to strike Ukraine in the near future, with joint military exercises being held between Russia and Belarus kicking off this week. Moscow maintains that it has a right to position its forces how it likes within its own territory.

As Western diplomats scramble to resolve growing tensions with Moscow, the UK's top diplomat has reportedly made a major error during crunch talks, allegedly proclaiming that London would never recognize the sovereignty of two regions universally considered to be part of Russia.

In an article published by Moscow daily Kommersant on Thursday, two Russian diplomatic sources claimed that British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss made the faux-pas while speaking in head-to-head discussions with her Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.

According to the outlet, London's top diplomat stressed that Moscow must withdraw its armed forces from the frontier with Ukraine, at which Lavrov reiterated that the Russian military is stationed in its own territory and has the right to conduct maneuvers within its borders.

The veteran Russian official is said to have turned to Truss and asked whether London recognizes Moscow's sovereignty over the regions of Rostov and Voronezh, where large troop movements are said to have taken place in recent days, close to the Ukrainian border.

After a moment's contemplation, the British diplomat reportedly replied that the UK "will never recognize Russia's sovereignty over these regions." The interaction is said to have spurred Deborah Bronnert, the UK's ambassador to Moscow, to swoop in and quietly remind her colleague that the two are actually considered Russian territory even by her own government.

Later in the day, Truss explained that she initially thought Lavrov was talking about a part of Ukraine and that she had subsequently made it clear that these regions are in fact part of Russia.

Kommersant's report follows shortly after Lavrov and Truss held high-stakes discussions in the Russian capital. Moscow's top diplomat expressed his dismay at the outcome of their exchange.

"Nobody is hearing each other, and unfortunately our efforts to explain ourselves have not been heard," Lavrov said.

UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss arrived in Moscow Wednesday, the UK embassy in Moscow said on Twitter.

Dr Tamitha Skov, a space weather psychists, posted on Twitter: "Direct Hit! NASA, NOAA & MetOffice predictions agree the #solarstorm launched Jan 29 will hit Earth by early Febuary 2!"

She later added: "The earlier post showed NOAA/SWPC prediction. This one shows the NASA prediction, which indicated the #solarstorm could hit as early as 18:00 GMT on February 1.

"The final post is the Met Office prediction. This model shows the #solarstorm hitting by 05:00 GMT on February 2.

When a solar storm arrives at Earth's atmosphere, it can cause some problems.

US Space Weather Center (SWPC) ranks solar storms on a scale of "G1 Minor", the least intense, all the way up to "G5 Extreme".

But even the weakest of storms threaten "power-grid fluctuations" and have a "minor impact on satellite operations".

At the stronger end of the scale, this is where it starts to get more dangerous.

A rocket test will reportedly be carried out by Ukraine on January 26. Kiev issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) that will keep the test area near the coast by Odessa, a port city in Ukraine, restricted. This also comes after the Department of the People's Militia (DPM) said Ukrainian security forces deployed a rocket-artillery battalion to Donbas. The DPM, a militia in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic region of Ukraine said the battalion consists of multiple launch rocket systems, dubbed "Hurricane", to the region.

Ukraine's military activity comes as reports of over 100,000 Russian troops stationed at the Russia-Ukraine border have sparked fears of an invasion.
And with reports that Britons have started to be evacuated from Ukraine, it appears that a conflict could break out at any minute.
About half the staff working at the UK embassy in Kiev are expected to leave with their families.
This came after the US decided to evacuate its non-essential embassy staff "as early as this week".
US President Joe Biden is reportedly considering sending several thousand US troops to help defend Ukraine.
He is also said to be planning for warships and an aircraft to be sent to back up to NATO allies too.
Mr Biden is said to be weighing up options put forward by Pentagon officials to send 1,000 to 5,000 troops to NATO allies in Eastern Europe.
That figure is said to potentially increase 10-fold if the situation deteriorates.
Moscow has now expressed concern about the transfer of military equipment from NATO countries to the Russian borders.
But the US has said Russia appears to be making preparations to deploy 100 battalion tactical groups.
It suspects an estimated 175,000 military personnel will be deployed from strategic locations along the Ukrainian border, backed by 100,000 reservist troops.
Mr Biden has previously warned Moscow that "if any, any assembled Russian units move across the Ukrainian border, that is an invasion" which would be met with "severe economic response".
This also comes after the UK accused Russia of plans to install a pro-Russian leader in Ukraine.
Foreign Secretary Liz Truss publicly named released Yevhen Murayev, a former Ukrainian MP, as the Kremlin's preferred candidate to take over the country following an invasion.
She also warned Russia of stark consequences if it invades.
She urged Mr Putin in a statement to "desist and step back" from Ukraine before he makes a "massive strategic mistake".
She said: "The Kremlin knows a military incursion would be a massive strategic mistake & the UK and our partners would impose a severe cost on Russia."
This tension comes eight years after Russia annexed Crimea.
It sparked fighting in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, and separatist troops are still battling today in a conflict that has claimed over 14,000 lives.
This also comes after the UK accused Russia of plans to install a pro-Russian leader in Ukraine.

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said undersea cables that transmit internet data are "the world's real information system", and added thatany attempt to damage them could be considered an "act of war".

Speaking to The Times in his first interview since assuming the role, Sir Tony - a former head of the Royal Navy - said there had been a "phenomenal increase in Russian submarine and underwater activity" over the past 20 years.

He said that meant Moscow could "put at risk and potentially exploit the world's real information system, which is undersea cables that go all around the world".

He added: "That is where predominantly all the world's information and traffic travels. Russia has grown the capability to put at threat those undersea cables and potentially exploit those undersea cables."

The Navy has been tracking Russian submarine activity, with a collision between the HMS Northumberland and a Russian sub sparking speculation about cable-mapping activity.

The collision in December 2020 was filmed by a documentary crew from Channel 5 who were working on a television series called Warship: Life At Sea.

In his interview, Sir Tony also said the UK needed to develop hypersonic missiles to keep up with the military competition.

He highlighted Russia's hypersonic and long-range missile capability as a threat and Britain's comparative capabilities as a weakness. "We haven't [got them] and we must have," he said.

Sir Tony also said he had briefed ministers on Britain's "military choices" if Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine, but did not reveal any further information.

Defence secretary Ben Wallace has previously said it would be "highly unlikely" the UK would send troops if an invasion occurred, while The Times reports cyber attacks "could be an option".

Talks between Moscow, the US and Nato are scheduled for next week amid tensions sparked by a Russian military build-up on the Ukraine border, but Nato general secretary Jens Stoltenberg has said the alliance needs to prepare "for the possibility that diplomacy will fail".

Boris Johnson was under growing pressure last night not to impose lockdown restrictions that will ruin Christmas for the second year in a row, with one Cabinet minister threatening to quit if a new festive crackdown is imposed.

Tory MPs last night said any attempt to toughen rules before Christmas will provoke letters seeking to oust Mr Johnson as party leader.

The Prime Minister is reportedly considering three scenarios to tackle the Omicron variant, including restrictions on mixing indoors in England, a curfew on pubs and restaurants and even an immediate lockdown.

And Health Secretary Sajid Javid yesterday refused to rule out Covid measures coming into force before Christmas Day.

But ministers indicated they will not back new curbs. Rishi Sunak is understood to be arguing that they need to plot a clear route out of restrictions before they are imposed, while Liz Truss says she is 'uncomfortable' with the current curbs.

One Cabinet minister has even gone as far as to say they will resign if the PM introduced another full lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19.

And in a sign of the ever-growing threat of further restrictions, Mr Johnson, who has repeatedly insisted that Christmas Day would not be cancelled, cleared his diary today in order to hold emergency meetings with scientists and his advisers, reports The Mirror.

The warnings from MPs and Cabinet ministers come just 24 hours after Lord Frost, up to now a close ally of Mr Johnson, dramatically quit as Brexit Minister slating 'coercive' Covid curbs and high taxes.

Lord Frost walked out with a parting shot at the 'direction of travel' and saying he had hoped the end of lockdown would be 'irreversible'. His departure was described as a 'watershed moment' in what had been an extremely damaging week for Boris Johnson.

It comes as the official number of confirmed cases of the Omicron variant rose by nearly 50 per cent to 37,000 in just 24 hours.

Families are desperate to spend Christmas together after last year's Covid lockdown rules meant millions were forced to be apart or severely scale back their celebrations.

It is understood Mr Johnson is resisting calls for restrictions ahead of December 25, but there are mounting fears they will be imposed after that, spoiling New Year plans for millions.

Scientists are urging the Prime Minister to bring in restrictions quickly, amid warnings that hospitals will struggle to cope with rising infection numbers.

Mr Javid repeatedly declined to rule out imposing tough restrictions before Christmas as he warned there are 'no guarantees' Christmas Day will go ahead without a lockdown. The Health Secretary acknowledged that data about the Omicron variant remained incomplete - but suggested it might be necessary to make decisions before a full picture is available.

'If you wait until data is absolutely perfect it may well be too late,' he said.

The Health Secretary admitted 'everything is under review' after SAGE delivered a grim assessment that the number of infections could reach two million by the end of the month without tougher restrictions - floating a 'circuit breaker' ban on households mixing and closure of non-essential shops.

The United Kingdom, United States, and Germany have expressed fear that the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) will fail to garner a serious resolution from Iran. The three western allies believe time is running out to come to an agreement, even as the rhetoric on both sides gets turned up.
UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss warned on Sunday that Iran may only have one final opportunity to rejoin the historic 2015 nuclear deal amid the latest spike in tensions between regional powers.
Negotiations over a new JCPOA nuclear deal have been taking place in Vienna since late last month after a five-month pause while Iran held elections and saw the rise of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

Truss told Reuters, "This is the last chance for Iran to come to the negotiating table with a serious resolution to this issue, which has to be agreeing to the terms of the JCPOA." She added, "This is their last chance and it is vital that they do so. We will not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon."
On Saturday, Annalena Baerbock, Germany's Minister of Foreign Affairs, voiced a similar sentiment.

She told reporters, "It has shown in the last days that we do not have any progress… due to the offer of the Iranian government, negotiations have been thrown back six months."
"Time is running out," she noted.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is also concerned that negotiations will end without a result. In the wake of a US delegation negotiating with Iran through European allies, Blinken said, "I have to tell you, recent moves, recent rhetoric, don't give us a lot of cause for optimism."
The pessimism comes only a week after US Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley told Al Jazeera that officials were "fully committed to a mutual return to compliance with the JCPOA."

"We think there's still time to do it if Iran comes back and says they're prepared to roll up their sleeves and do it, too," he underscored at the time.
Earlier this month, Blinken revealed that the latest round of talks in Vienna were halted after negotiators determined that Iran was not "serious about doing what's necessary to return to compliance." Iran later responded to the remarks by blaming the setback on the US' refusal to lift restrictive sanctions.
The JCPOA was initially negotiated over the course of 20 months - from 2013 through 2015, with the 15-year deal granting expanded oversight to outside entities over Iran's nuclear program. The agreement allowed Iran to slowly develop a nuclear infrastructure.
In 2018, the Trump administration unilaterally withdrew the United States from the agreement after accusing Iran of breaching restrictions of the agreement. In the wake of the sudden withdrawal, Iran subsequently discarded its nuclear program constraints as the US began a "maximum pressure" campaign that saw a slew of sanctions imposed.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has called on London to repay its debt to Iran, noting that the UK can no longer present false pretenses for delaying the payment which relates to the purchase of British tanks in the 1970s.

In a press briefing on Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told reporters that Tehran had once again pushed the UK to hand over the ?400 million it owes to Iran.

Khatibzadeh said that Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani had breached the topic on a visit to London in which bilateral issues were discussed. The minister had reminded London that they could no longer put off the debt repayment under any pretexts, according to Khatibzadeh.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian also spoke with his British counterpart, Liz Truss last Monday, Khatibzadeh stated, requesting urgent repayment of the debt.

Britain owes around ?400 million to Iran relating to the 1971 purchase of 1,500 Chieftain tanks and armored vehicles by the government of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the pro-Western shah who ruled the country until the 1979 revolution.

The UK's state-owned International Military Services delivered 185 tanks before the revolution, but the agreement was revoked following the seizing of the United States Embassy and the hostage crisis which engendered decades of hostility.

LONDON, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed Liz Truss as foreign minister on Wednesday, only the second woman to hold the position in Britain.

As trade minister for the past two years, Truss has been a strong advocate of Britain's economic and diplomatic realignment towards the Indo-Pacific region, spearheading efforts to join a trans-Pacific trading bloc. The 46-year-old has struck trade deals around the world, including with Japan and Australia.

Here are some of her views on foreign affairs:

ON THE UNITED STATES

Truss has not succeeded in securing a highly-prized trade deal with the United States, with President Joe Biden's administration prioritising a complete review of Trump-era trade policy.

However, Truss has helped to negotiate the de-escalation of a long-standing trade dispute over aircraft subsidies and the removal of U.S. tariffs on a range of British exports.

Truss met a series of U.S. libertarian groups that have championed tax cuts and deregulation for businesses in 2018, according to documents cited by Greenpeace. It cited a briefing note as saying Truss wanted to hear "what we can learn from 'Reaganomics' on things like regulation and red tape".

"Reaganomics" is a theory that tax breaks and other benefits for corporations and the wealthy will benefit everyone else, which has been fiercely debated since Reagan made it a centerpiece of his economic strategy in the 1980s.

ON CHINA

Truss had called for the world to "get tough with China" and has said the World Trade Organization should refuse to treat China as a developed country, a status it currently enjoys. She has argued that China benefits from exceptions to the rules which were made decades ago and no longer reflect its status as an economic superpower.

"The WTO was established when China was 10% the size of the U.S. economy," Truss told the Financial Times in an interview earlier this year. "It is ludicrous that it is still self-designating as a developing country."

Truss said some of China's behaviour has contributed to an erosion of trust in the global trade system and urged other countries to clamp down on what it sees as unfair subsidies for state-owned enterprises.

"This is the time to get tough on China and their behaviour in the global trading system," she said.

ON THE EUROPEAN UNION

Truss backed staying in the European Union during the 2016 Brexit referendum but has said she has since changed her mind and has called for Britain to use the opportunity of leaving the EU to transform its economy.

She said on Tuesday that British firms must do more to take advantage of new export routes opened up by Brexit.

"The path to economic revival does not lie in retreating and retrenching but in free trade and free enterprise," she said.

The phrase "Build Back Better" was used in the United Nations in 2015 to describe the approach by which Japan was able to recover from the 2011 earthquake which triggered a tsunami, both of which led to the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster.

In the coronavirus pandemic era, Build Back Better has been adopted by progressive world leaders and is often associated with the climate change agenda, such as by Canada's prime minister, Justin Trudeau, who said of "Build Back Better" last year: "This pandemic has provided an opportunity for a reset. This is our chance to accelerate our pre-pandemic efforts to reimagine our economic systems that actually address global challenges like extreme poverty, inequality and climate change."

The phrase is better known as part of U.S. President Joe Biden's agenda and the slogan has been adopted by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the leader of the Conservative Party.

Johnson evoked "Build Back Better" after speaking to then-president-elect Biden in November, saying that he "look[ed] forward to strengthening the partnership between our countries and to working with him on our shared priorities - from tackling climate change, to promoting democracy and building back better from the pandemic".

Build Back Better has also become associated with the Great Reset agenda laid out by the World Economic Forum (WEF), which meets at the exclusive Swiss resort of Davos. The WEF has used the phrase several times in the past year. WEF Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab had written in June 2020 that there needed to be a "'Great Reset' of capitalism" to transform societies and economies in the global response to the Chinese coronavirus pandemic.

According to the British government, the annual volume of trade between the UK and the members of the group grew by eight percent since 2016 to £111 billion (over $152 billion) in 2020. London says that that domestic manufacturers, including food and drink producers, as well as the automotive industry, will benefit from the deal, but the UK won't have to cede control of its laws, borders, and money like under EU membership.

"One year after our departure from the EU we are forging new partnerships that will bring enormous economic benefits for the people of Britain," Prime Minister Boris Johnson said. He noted that the UK will be the first nation to officially apply to join the agreement since it came into force in 2018, which "demonstrates our ambition to do business on the best terms" with partners across the globe.

While the intention was also welcomed by business groups, it still drew criticism. Labour's trade policy chief, Emily Thornberry, said the UK's "big decision" on membership in the mammoth agreement comes shortly after the country finally left a trade bloc with our closest neighbors, "only to join another one on the other side of the world with no public debate at all." She called on the government to open public consultation on the matter, as most people even don't know what the pact is.

The United Kingdom secured a post-Brexit trade agreement with Canada on Saturday, and have committed to negotiating deeper trade ties after Britain finally frees itself from the control of the European Union at the end of the year.

The agreement will come into place on January 1st following the end of the Brexit transition period. The government expects the deal to lock in at least £20 billion in trade between the two nations, as well as an estimated £42 million in tariff savings on British exports.

The deal will secure zero tariffs of cars from the United Kingdom to Canada, which totalled some £757 million in sales last year, as well as tariff-free exports on 98 per cent of British goods including fish, beef, seafood, and soft drinks.

The agreement will also save the British public from paying up to 8 per cent in increased prices on Canadian goods such as maple syrup, biscuits, and salmon.

Announcing the deal, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "This is a fantastic agreement for Britain which secures transatlantic trade with one of our closest allies. British businesses export everything from electric cars to sparkling wine to Canada, and today's deal will ensure that trade goes from strength to strength."

"Our negotiators have been working flat out to secure trade deals for the UK, and from as early next year we have agreed to start work on a new, bespoke trade deal with Canada that will go even further in meeting the needs of our economy," Johnson added.

The two countries agreed that they will seek further economic cooperation starting next year in a specific British-Canadadian deal on areas such as digital trade. The future negotiations are also expected to focus on the 'Build Back Better' priorities of Mr Johnson and Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, such as climate change and "women's economic empowerment".

U.K. Secretary of State for International Trade Liz Truss, who signed the pact with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi in Tokyo, called it a "ground-breaking" deal.

Under terms of the deal, virtually all British exports to Japan will be free of tariffs, while the U.K. will remove its own tariffs on Japanese auto imports by 2026.

"It used to be said that an independent U.K. would not be able to strike major trade deals or they would take years to conclude," Truss said at the joint press announcement with Motegi. "But today we prove the naysayers wrong with this groundbreaking, British-shaped deal that was agreed to in record time."

The trade deal will take effect on Jan. 1, 2021.

Motegi also said a deal between the U.K. and the EU was still necessary for Japanese businesses, especially automakers such as Nissan and Toyota (TM) which use parts from Europe in vehicles they manufacture in the U.K.

Motegi added he had "high hopes" that a deal would be struck between the U.K. and EU.

The new U.K.-Japan deal is very similar to Tokyo's existing trade pact with the EU, except that it includes language on digital trade and lacks quotas for some agricultural exports.

Moreover, critics pointed out that the trade deal with Japan will increase U.K. GDP by only 0.07%. Some analysts said the pact should have been more comprehensive.

Minako Morita-Jaeger, international trade policy consultant and fellow of the U.K. Trade Policy Observatory at the University of Sussex, told BBC: "Given that Japanese [foreign direct investment] has been playing an important role in the U.K. economy and retaining its existing investment in post-Brexit is crucial, the U.K. government should have shown a strong commitment to Japanese investment by including a comprehensive investment chapter encompassing investment protection and dispute settlement."

Nonetheless, both the U.K. and Japan hope this deal will facilitate Britain's eventual entry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, a regional trade zone that includes Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Malaysia and other Pacific Rim nations.

The British government is facing renewed criticism over ongoing UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia, and has been accused by opposition MPs of "turning a blind eye" to war crimes in Yemen.

In a debate in the House of Commons on Thursday, Labour MP Claudia Webbe said it was "shameful" the UK was "complicit" in the Yemeni conflict.

"The UK supplies weapons and crucial military support to the Saudi-led coalition, which is responsible for the highest number of reported civilian fatalities," she said. "British companies should not be allowed to profit from the suffering of the people of Yemen."

Labour MP Sam Tarry said the government "should hang its head in shame at its central role in helping to create the world's worst humanitarian crisis by training, equipping and enabling the Saudi regime to bomb innocent Yemeni civilians".

"After suspending new arms sales to the Saudi regime last year, the government has resumed its deadly support in July," he added.

"Once again [the UK is] turning a blind eye to the war crimes that it is enabling Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to commit."

In June 2019, the UK government banned new arms sales to the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen, after it was defeated in a lengthy court battle.

The ban also included sales to the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Bahrain and Kuwait, and covered any weapons or military equipment that could be used in the conflict.

But in July of this year, the government resumed weapons sales with International Trade Secretary Liz Truss saying officials had completed a review of how arms export licences were granted, and that any breaches of international law were "isolated incidents".

Scottish National Party MP Kirsten Oswald derided the decision, saying it was "beyond my comprehension" why the UK had resumed arms sales to Riyadh.

"The UK government needs to explain why they are not following the examples of Canada, Germany, Denmark, the UN, the US Congress and the European Parliament, among others, in calling for an embargo on arms sales to Saudi Arabia, in line with international guidelines on not selling arms to those involved in conflicts that target civilians," she said.

Still, some MPs supported the move, including John Howell of the Conservative Party, who argued that "unless we can stop the Iranian funding of the Houthi rebels, it is useless to put all the blame, and an arms embargo, on Saudi Arabia".

The U.K.-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement will be Britain's first major trade pact of the Brexit era.

U.K. Secretary of State for International Trade Liz Truss and Japan's Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi signed off on the deal during a video conference Friday morning.

The U.K. Department for International Trade said the deal will increase trade with Japan by an estimated £15.2 billion ($19.5 billion). (The Department did not specify a time frame for this figure)

"This is a historic moment for the U.K. and Japan as our first major post-Brexit trade deal," Truss said in a statement. "The agreement we have negotiated - in record time and in challenging circumstances - goes far beyond the existing EU deal [with Japan], as it secures new wins for British businesses in our great manufacturing, food and drink, and tech industries."

The International Trade Department further said the agreement will provide a boost to Britain's annual gross domestic product by £1.5 billion ($1.92 billion).

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted: "The U.K. has just signed a major free trade agreement with Japan. We have taken back control of our trade policy [and] will continue to thrive as a trading nation outside the EU."

Truss added: "From our automotive workers in Wales to our shoemakers in the North of England, this deal will help ... create new opportunities for people throughout the whole of the U.K. and help level up our country."

Under terms of the deal, the U.K. will benefit from tariff-free trade on 99% of exports to Japan.

The deal will also provide "strong tariff reductions" for U.K. pork and beef exports and low tariffs for iconic British products such as Stilton cheese.

The US has said it will hold off an a threatened hike in tariffs on $7.5bn (£5.75bn) worth of European and UK goods that it imposed as punishment for subsidies for plane-maker Airbus.

The move comes as the two sides wrestle to put an to end their 16-year trade battle over state aid for Airbus and American rival Boeing.

The US last year raised border taxes on more than 100 items, including jumpers, single-malt whiskies and cheese. It has said the EU has not done enough. "The EU and member states have not taken the actions necessary to come into compliance with WTO decisions," America's top trade official, Robert Lighthizer, said on Wednesday. "The United States, however, is committed to obtaining a long-term resolution to this dispute.

Airbus last month said it would alter some deals responsible for the dispute, saying the changes, including increasing its interest rates on loans with France and Spain, eliminated "any justification" for the US border taxes. The move prompted EU officials to call for an end to "unjustified" tariffs. Many American businesses have also protested the border taxes, which raise prices for American buyers.

On Wednesday Airbus spokesman Clay McConnell said in a statement the company "profoundly regrets that, despite Europe's recent actions to achieve full compliance, USTR [US Trade Representative] has decided to maintain tariffs on Airbus aircraft – especially at a time when aviation and other sectors are going through an unprecedented crisis." The US is required by law to review the tariffs periodically. On Wednesday it announced minor tweaks to the list, for example, removing sweet biscuits made in the UK and adding jams from France and Germany.

Trade lawyer Jamieson Greer, former chief of staff to US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, told the BBC: "The reality is that this can all be solved if Airbus took some action to provide restitution". The European Union, which brought its own case challenging American subsidies for Boeing, has threatened to hit the US with tariffs of its own. It is waiting for the World Trade Organization to decide how big such a punishment might be. The US in May said it had eliminated the benefits in dispute. That WTO ruling is expected later this year.

"In the absence of a settlement, the EU will be ready to fully avail itself of its own sanction rights," Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan said last month. The issue has also complicated trade talks between the US and the UK. UK Trade Secretary Liz Truss raised the matter in talks with Mr Lighthizer this month, as the two sides held a third round of negotiations.

The secretary "was clear that the UK considers these tariffs to be unacceptable and continued to push for their immediate removal," the Department for International Trade said.

The UK's left-wing Labour Party has called on the government to suspend the sale of British-made riot gear to the United States, including teargas and crowd control equipment, during the ongoing riots in America over the death of George Floyd.

The fervently anti-Trump shadow international trade secretary for the Labour Party, Emily Thornberry, wrote to her Conservative counterpart, Liz Truss, saying that Britain should suspend the sale of the riot gear as a matter of "urgency". She claimed that it would "be a disgrace" if the country were to support what she termed the "violent repression" of "peaceful protestors" by President Donald Trump.

"If British-made riot control equipment is being used to attack unarmed protesters and journalists in the US, those exports must immediately be stopped. We cannot be a party to the violence of the American President against his own people," the left-wing MP said.

"I'm sure that you will agree that, at a time when Donald Trump is gearing up to use the US military to crush legitimate protests across America over the murder of Black civilians, it would be a disgrace for the UK to supply him with the arms and equipment he will use to do so," Thornberry wrote to Truss.

"If this were any other leader, in any other country in the world, the suspension of any such exports is the least we could expect from the British government in response to their actions, and our historic alliance with the United States is no reason to shirk that responsibility now," she concluded.

Labour MP Dawn Butler, who has in the past called for Britain to pay slavery reparations, said that she is organising a group of like-minded lawmakers to block the export of riot gear.

Currently, people under the age of 18 are allowed surgery but with parental consent.

Even still, the process is so long drawn out that in reality few teenagers are able to undergo irreversible surgery before they reach adulthood.

However, the equalities minister today signalled plans to ban under-18s with gender dysphoria from genital reconstructive surgery in a move, she claimed, which would "protect them from making those irreversible decisions"….

New Conflict of Interest Evidence Against UK Judge in Charge of Assange Extradition Process

Information has come to light demonstrating that the chief magistrate overseeing the extradition proceedings against Julian Assange received financial benefits from organizations with close ties to the UK Foreign Office prior to her appointment.

According to a report on Friday in the South African-based Daily Maverick, Lady Emma Arbuthnot attended, along with her husband Lord Arbuthnot of Edrom, all-expenses-paid secretive gatherings of the organizations Tertulias and Tatlidil in 2014 that included numerous UK foreign policy officials. Lady Arbuthnot was appointed chief magistrate in Westminster in October 2016.

Although as of November 2019 Arbuthnot is no longer formally presiding over the Assange extradition proceedings, she has refused to recuse herself and remains in a supervisory role overseeing the trial with her subordinate District Judge Vanessa Baraitser on the bench. According to the UK court rules, the chief magistrate is "responsible for ... supporting and guiding district judge colleagues."

The Daily Maverick report states: "Tertulias, an annual forum held for political and corporate leaders in the UK and Spain, is regarded by the UK Foreign Office as one of its 'partnerships'." In attendance at the Tertulias conference in Bilbao, Spain in October 2014 was Conservative Party member Liz Truss, who is now UK Trade Secretary. The report says, "Liz Truss, then Justice Secretary, 'advised' the Queen to appoint Lady Arbuthnot in October 2016."

The expenses of Lady Arbuthnot at the Bilbao conference were covered by the Tertulias organization, since her husband, "a former Conservative defense minister with extensive links to the British military and intelligence community exposed by WikiLeaks," was the chairman of the organization.

Lady Arbuthnot was also present with her husband at the British-Turkish Tatlidil Forum in Istanbul in November 2014. Daily Maverick describes Tatlidil (Turkish for "sweet talk") as "a forum established by the UK and Turkish governments for 'high level' individuals involved in politics and business." Those present included Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an.

Lady Arbuthnot's first ruling on Assange was made in February 2018 while he was a political asylee in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Assange's lawyers had applied to have his British arrest warrant withdrawn.

Assange had never been charged with a crime, and in May 2017 the Swedish proceedings had been discontinued along with the European Arrest Warrant. The warrant related to Assange skipping bail to claim asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy, where the Ecuadorian government agreed that he was at risk of political persecution in the United States.

Arbuthnot refused the request. Her ruling was irregular, dismissing Assange's fears of US extradition and the findings of the UN. "I accept that Mr Assange had expressed fears of being returned to the United States from a very early stage in the Swedish extradition proceedings but... I do not find that Mr Assange's fears were reasonable," she said.

"I give little weight to the views of the Working Group," she added, referring to the United Nations body which termed Assange's condition one of "arbitrary detention". "I do not find that Mr Assange's stay in the Embassy is inappropriate, unjust, unpredictable, unreasonable, unnecessary or disproportionate."

When he was grabbed from the Ecuadorian embassy by British police in April 2019, district judge Michael Snow pilloried Assange's claims that Lady Arbuthnot was conflicted: "His assertion that he has not had a fair hearing is laughable. And his behaviour is that of a narcissist who cannot get beyond his own selfish interests," Snow told the court.

Lady Arbuthnot made her most recent ruling on Assange in June 2019. District Judge Vanessa Baraitser - who is still overseen by Lady Arbuthnot - will rule on the extradition proceedings which begin on 25 February.

Liz Truss, Lady Arbuthnot, Lord Arbuthnot, and the Foreign Office, did not respond to requests for comment. DM

The senior judge overseeing the extradition proceedings of WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange received financial benefits from two partner organisations of the British Foreign Office before her appointment, it can be revealed.

It can further be revealed that Lady Emma Arbuthnot was appointed Chief Magistrate in Westminster on the advice of a Conservative government minister with whom she had attended a secretive meeting organised by one of these Foreign Office partner organisations two years before.

Liz Truss, then Justice Secretary, "advised" the Queen to appoint Lady Arbuthnot in October 2016. Two years before, Truss - who is now Trade Secretary - and Lady Arbuthnot both attended an off-the-record two-day meeting in Bilbao, Spain.

The expenses were covered by an organisation called Tertulias, chaired by Lady Arbuthnot's husband - Lord Arbuthnot of Edrom, a former Conservative defence minister with extensive links to the British military and intelligence community exposed by WikiLeaks.

Tertulias, an annual forum held for political and corporate leaders in the UK and Spain, is regarded by the UK Foreign Office as one of its "partnerships". The 2014 event in Bilbao was attended by David Lidington, the Minister for Europe, while the Foreign Office has in the past funded Lord Arbuthnot's attendance at the forum.

The Foreign Office has long taken a strong anti-Assange position, rejecting UN findings in his favour, refusing to recognise the political asylum given to him by Ecuador, and even labelling Assange a "miserable little worm".

Lady Arbuthnot also benefited financially from another trip with her husband in 2014, this time to Istanbul for the British-Turkish Tatlidil, a forum established by the UK and Turkish governments for "high level" individuals involved in politics and business.

Both Tertulias and Tatlidil are secretive gatherings about which little is known and are not obviously connected - but Declassified has discovered that the UK address of the two organisations has been the same.

Lady Arbuthnot personally presided over Assange's case as judge from late 2017 until mid-2019, delivering two controversial rulings. Although she is no longer personally hearing the Assange extradition proceedings, she remains responsible for supporting and guiding the junior judges in her jurisdiction. Lady Arbuthnot has refused to declare any conflicts of interest in the case.

The new revelations follow previous investigations by Declassified showing that Lady Arbuthnot received gifts and hospitality in relation to her husband from a military and cybersecurity company exposed by WikiLeaks. Declassified also revealed that the Arbuthnots' son is linked to an anti-data leak company created by the UK intelligence establishment and staffed by officials recruited from US intelligence agencies behind that country's prosecution of the WikiLeaks founder.

The Multi-Billion-Dollar Mystery Of The Great British Gold Sale


A chart that has all sorts of consequences, including misleading ministers, distorting our view on the nature of the UK economy and creating a genuine mystery about what's going on in the bowels of the UK economy.

Here's the chart in question: exports of gold from the UK…For the vast majority of history they were near zero (average monthly level apt £126m). Then, suddenly, in the last two months of last year, gold exports were catapulted higher.

It's a staggering chart.

Just to put that spike into context, £12bn (what those two months of gold exports add up to) is the total annual output of a country like Jamaica. It is more than we typically export, over a two month period, to ANY single country, including US or Germany (our biggest trading partners).

It has serious consequences. Since comparable records began in 1998, there hasn't been a single month where the UK was a net goods exporter. We've always had a deficit. In December, thanks to the £12bn gold exports, Britain recorded its first monthly trade surplus on record…The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has started trying to strip gold out of the figures. Indeed the gold chart above is a new series they've just published.

However ONS are bound by international regulations to include gold in the headline numbers. That massively distorts them. After all, the UK is the world hub for gold trading. Any movement/change of ownership of gold bars counts as imports/exports even though it's hardly what anyone would consider an "export."

You might've thought all of that would mean our politicians would think twice before boasting about those dodgy headline trade figures. Not a bit of it. This week, Liz Truss, MP for South West Norfolk, and UK Trade Secretary, tweeted this about them:

Every bullet point in her tweet is wrong if you strip out gold exports:

UK biz exported £674bn of goods & services (not £689)

A 2.9% increase on 2018 (lowest since 2016; not 5.0%)

We don't know how much exports to non-EU countries rose; ONS hasn't worked them out ex-gold

It's not like exports are doing badly. They're at 30.4% of GDP once you strip out gold. That's one of the highest levels in decades, though it is down on last year. Perhaps that's why Liz Truss used the dodgy headline numbers which look far better because of that £12bn of gold exports. But none of that solves the real mystery here.

Why did gold exports spike so dramatically?

One thesis doing the rounds is that it has something to do with this story: Poland repatriating some of the gold that's been in the Bank of England's vaults since WW2…But it's not that, because central bank gold movements (monetary gold) aren't included in these gold statistics. Anyway all that Polish gold still wouldn't account for all the gold that changed hands in Nov/Dec. It's equivalent to Barbados's GDP, not Jamaica's. As far as I can divine here's the answer.

A US bank with London gold vaults shifted some of that gold from being "unallocated" to being "allocated".

Effectively it moved it on its balance sheet.

The gold stayed in the same vault but technically it shifted from UK ownership to US.

In other words, a couple of clicks in a bank's spreadsheet caused the biggest fluctuation in Britain's trade figures in modern history. At least that's the most plausible explanation.

Though it raises further questions: Why? Is the bank in trouble? And who owns the gold anyway? And is it just a coincidence that all of this occurred as The Fed was forced to unleash unprecedented liquidity to support the repo market…

Short answer: we may never know. No other sector is as cloak-and-dagger as gold. What we do know is that crazy stuff is happening beneath Britain's national statistics and it's time we started paying attention to it.

Night of the Long Knives: Boris May Purge Remainers from Cabinet

Reports suggest that Tory leadership favourite Boris Johnson may purge Remainers opposed to delivering Brexit, deal or no deal, from his Cabinet.

The former Foreign Secretary and two-time Mayor of London is concerned that staunch anti-Brexiteers such as Amber Rudd, who now say they would serve under a Prime Minister Johnson, are only doing so in hopes they will be able to dissuade him from leaving the EU on No Deal terms if the bloc will not agree to a less onerous withdrawal agreement than the one offered to Theresa May.

"[Johnson] knows his top priority is to deliver Brexit by October 31st - or the wheels will come off the bus," a soource described as a "senior ally" told The Sun.

"Over the next few days he needs to pick ministers who are united in their desire to get us over the line come what may. Fail and we're stuck in the road - and Boris is finished."

Johnson is said to be considering sacking Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip 'Remainer Phil' Hammond, who is now openly lobbying against No Deal, as well as business secretary Greg Clark, justice secretary David Gauke, and - perhaps unsupringly - foreign aid secretary Rory Stewart.

These reports come as committed Brexiteers within the party are expressing concerns about Remain voters who now claim they back Brexit being rumoured to be in line for senior Cabinet jobs.

"There needs to a Praetorian Guard - a ring of steel - around Boris so he doesn't fold when faced with Whitehall," a source told The Sun.
"People are worried. There's all this talk of Sajid [Javid] being made Chancellor, Liz [Truss] going into business. They're born again Brexiteers - remember they both voted Remain," they warned.

"Boris needs to remember who's got him here in the first place."

The Brexiteers are said to want key positions for European Research Group (ERG) mainstays such as Steve Baker, the former Brexit minister - but Johnson's difficulty is that a majority of Tory MPs voted Remain, the party already runs a minority administration, and if a significant number of Tory Remainers began voting with anti-Brexit opposition parties on a regular basis his premiership could become untenable.

Farage Vows to 'Replace the British Conservative Party' If Boris Betrays Brexit

Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage has vowed his Brexit Party will "replace the British Conservative Party" if Boris Johnson betrays Brexit.

Speaking to Breitbart News editor-in-chief Alex Marlow on his SiriusXM Patriot radio show, Mr Farage traced much of Britain's current problems to the fact that many Brexit campaigners took Theresa May - a Remain voter - at her word when she took over from David Cameron and promised the Leave vote would be respected, even if it meant leaving the European Union without a bilateral agreement, or "deal".

As it turned out, Mrs May broke her promise - issued at least 108 times from the Prime Minister's despatch box in the House of Commons - to take Britain out of the bloc on March 29th 2019, and has delayed Brexit twice, because she could not get a "deal" denounced as a "surrender document" through Parliament and would not, after all, countenance leaving the bloc without one.

Farage warned that the Brexit Party will not make the same mistake if Johnson becomes Prime Minister, as is expected, and will remain active to ensure Brexit voters have someone to turn to if the Tory MP betrays them.

"We know we can't trust the Conservatives, because they're not really conservative... we will not be going home, we will not be going away - but there are circumstances in which some form of electoral pact, some form of accommodation, could be possible," he suggested.

Leaked documents have revealed Prime Minister Theresa May could be plotting to keep the UK tied to the European Union (EU) for years after the Brexit "transition period", despite claiming the latest proposed divorce delay will only be a few months.

Last week, Theresa May proposed keeping the entire UK locked in the bloc's Customs Union after the Brexit "transition" to avert customs checks on the Irish border or in the Irish sea, as EU leaders continue to refuse to let the UK keep the border open with technology.

Cabinet ministers in her government have now been warned there may be no guarantee the UK will be able to get out of these arrangements, and leaks seen by The Times claim Britain could be left in a "long-running" multi-year transition period.

The leaks raise questions about whether or not the Prime Minister has misled the government and the general public.

Just last week, she said the arrangement could be extended "for a few months" and on Monday told MPs the implementation plan would end "well before the end of this Parliament" in 2022.

Later on Wednesday, Mrs May is set to face some of her harshest Brexiteer critics in the powerful Tory backbench 1922 Committee in a crunch meeting.

Key ministers, including Jeremy Hunt, the foreign secretary, Liz Truss, the chief secretary to the Treasury, and Michael Gove, the agriculture secretary, have already stressed their concern over her latest customs "backstop" plan and extended transition.

And over the weekend, Some MPs ramped up their rhetoric, telling the Prime Minister to "bring her own noose" to the crunch meeting Wednesday, hinting at a rebellion, as former Brexit Secretary David Davis set a leadership bid in a challenge to her power.

Also this Wednesday, it was reported that officials have admitted that the UK's border force will not have the staff, infrastructure, or systems in place to protect and police the UK's land and sea borders with the EU in the event of a "no deal" Brexit.

The revelation increases pressure on the Government to agree to a deal with the bloc, however bad, to avoid chaos after the divorce.
