US mayors praise Chinese government after visit to Wuhan for climate change and sustainability exchange
Six mayors from the United States participated in an exchange with the Chinese government in which they traveled to take part in the U.S. Heartland China Association's Yangtze-Mississippi Municipality Energy Transition Exchange project.
The mayors who made the trip were Mayor Jim Brainard of Carmel, Indiana; Mayor Barbara Buffaloe of Columbia, Missouri; Mayor Lee Harris of Shelby County, Tennessee; Mayor Chokwe Lumumba from Jackson, Mississippi; Mayor Kim Norton of Rochester, Minnesota; and Mayor Robyn Tannehill of Oxford, Mississippi.
The exchange was officially part of an effort to promote best practices between communities along the two major rivers, particularly in regards to "energy transition, climate mitigation, and green economy."
The two sides discussed opportunities for possible collaboration and took a trip to Voyah Automobile, a Chinese-state owned luxury car manufacturer now specializing in electric vehicles. The cars are reportedly sold in Russia, Israel, Turkey, and Belarus, as well as China.
As reported by Natalie Winters, several of the mayors praised China's approach to green energy policies. Specifically, electric vehicle investments and alleged carbon-reducing infrastructure were Chinese policies that some of the mayors hoped to implement in the United States.
"We were talking about climate change," said Columbia, Missouri, Mayor Buffaloe. "I know that in order for us to solve climate change, or at least reduce the impacts it's having on our communities and make sure we have a planet for our future generations, that it's going to take us working on things like electrical vehicle transformation, renewable energy both production, as well as scale and supply."
Buffaloe went on to state that the "best practices" she learned in China should be implemented in American communities.
"It's about our communities learning from one another, sharing these best practices, and then implementing them in our own communities. We need all kinds of exchanges with China."
Shelby County, Tennessee, Mayor Harris praised Chinese investments surrounding carbon emissions.
"China is quickly making the right kinds of investments, and those are investments in infrastructure, that's investments in reducing carbon emissions, that's investments in new tech like electric vehicles, and we've got a lot of work to do."
Mayor Brainard of Carmel, Indiana, said that the work conducted alongside Chinese politicians should be implement worldwide.
"Collaboration between U.S. and Chinese mayors not only benefits the hundreds of millions of people living in our two countries, but the ongoing joint work will lead to best practices that can be applied around the world."
Brainard also signed a sister cities agreement between Carmel, Indiana, and Xiangyang, Hubei, China.

15 arrested in Montgomery County online child sex exploitation sting: 'The worst kind of predators'
An undercover sting targeting child exploitation led to the arrests of 15 people in central Alabama.
The operation was carried out Thursday and Friday in Montgomery County.
Those taking part were the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, the Montgomery Police Department, the U.S. Marshals and the Montgomery County District Attorney's office.
"This is something serious,'' Sheriff Derrick Cunningham said during a Monday press conference. "This is something we're not standing for and it's something we addressed."
The massive sting took several months of training and planning.
Assistant Chief Deputy Wesley Richerson said they were targeting people who prey on children. Those arrested, he said, communicated online with who they believed to be children and agreed to pay them for sex acts.
Montgomery police Chief Darryl Albert called the suspects "the worst kind of predators'' and District Attorney Daryl Bailey said, "the children of Montgomery are a little safer today."
To parents, Richerson said, "Please review and monitor what your children are doing online and who they are taking to. You would not leave your front door wide open - your child's phone, if unmonitored, is an open door to their life."
"This operation surpassed all expectations,'' said Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Dante Gordon.
Those charged with first-degree human trafficking, electronic solicitation of a child and traveling to meet a child for an unlawful sex act are:
- Leon Johnson, 50
- Malik Hazama, 36
- Key Darine Dashun Coley, 28
- Jesus Alejandro Lopez-Vicente, 32
- Jalen Miller, 22
- Anthony Allen, 22
- Jordan Addison Dukes, 30
- James Earl Ellis, III, 28
- Robert Anthony Lusco Jr., 56
- Quentin Lamar Jones, 26
- Johnny Lee Timmons, 29
- Flanzy Lee Harris, 43
- Al'Shon Tupactre Latrell Walker, 21
- Jarvis Frost, 25
- Charity Devontay Wright, 24
Five of the suspects have been released on bond. Ten others remained held Monday in the Montgomery County Detention Center.

FBI raid on Commissioner Ford's home related to 2021 ethics probe
"MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A two-year investigation into Shelby County Commissioner Edmund Ford Jr. for the misuse of public funds is what prompted the feds to raid his family home in Whitehaven early Thursday morning.
FBI searches Memphis home linked to Ford family members
The search warrant was the result of a $450,000 grant given to Junior Achievement of Memphis and the Mid-South in 2019. The non-profit reportedly bought $45,000 worth of computers from Ford's business.
However, Ford allegedly did not disclose the dealings. Due to a conflict of interest, the case was then sent to District Attorney General Robert Carter in Middle Tennessee.
"We were asked to handle this matter as a pro tem prosecutor back in March of 2021. We've been working on the investigation since then," Carter said.
Attorney for County Commissioner Edmund Ford Jr. responds to ethics violations allegations
A statement that County Mayor Lee Harris' office sent Thursday regarding the matter says: "... the mayor has been working for some time to advance a series of local reforms and breathe new life into the county's ethics ordinance."
Friday WREG pressed county officials about the issue but were told they were not making any comments about Commissioner Ford.
But Chief Administrative Officer Harold Collins eventually elaborated on the mayor's intentions for the ethics ordinance.
"Well that's something that the mayor has been pushing and trying to get done for a long time," Collins said. "The ethics ordinance only prescribes that elected and appointed officials adhere to policies that does not bring reproach upon Shelby County government."
The Junior Achievement of Memphis office was closed Friday, but a spokesperson previously said they are cooperating with authorities.
Junior Achievement to move into old Save-a-Lot space
We also returned to the Ford home for their side of the story. No one answered, but we were greeted with Bible scripture taped to the door - sending a message that, while at the center of a federal investigation, they're now falling back on their faith.
District Attorney Robert Carter would not say why the feds are involved in the investigation or what they were looking for, but said more search warrants will possibly be served."

Smith County affidavit: FBI agent exposed himself to juveniles in Texas, Louisiana, Florida
TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - An FBI supervisory special agent based in Louisiana allegedly exposed himself to multiple children and molested one child in a period from 2018 to 2019, and the alleged crimes took place in Florida, Louisiana, and Texas, according to a Smith County affidavit.
The suspect in the case is David Lee Harris, 51. Of Prairieville, Louisiana. A previous story by WAFB said the allegations involve underage girls.
During a previous court hearing, prosecutors said Harris threatened at least one of the victims if she said anything.
In Smith County, Harris, an FBI special supervisory agent, has been charged with third-degree felony indecent exposure.
The Smith County affidavit was obtained by a Texas Ranger. The Ranger on the case was contacted by a senior special agent with the United States Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General after the OIG's office requested help on an alleged indecency with a child case that was reported on February 9.
The senior special agent with the OIG's office told the Texas Range that the report had been received concurrently by the DOJOIG and the United States Army Department of the Army because Harris was employed by both the FBI and the U.S. Army at the time of the alleged offenses.
The recent WAFB story stated Harris is assigned to the FBI field office in New Orleans. The story also said he had recently been appointed to head up a regional division of the FBI that investigates online crimes against children, including child pornography.
According to the Army report, one of the alleged incidents occurred at a rental home in St. George Island, Florida in 2019 when Harris' family and another family were vacationing. Harris allegedly took off all of his clothes at a pool party and started swimming in full view of two juveniles.
When Harris was confronted about it, he allegedly apologized and blamed his actions on being drunk.
The man who reported the "skinny dipping" incident told authorities he found a letter from his wife that was addressed to someone he believes is Harris that talked about the sexual relationship they had while they were married to other people.
In the letter, the man's wife stated that Harris exposed himself in of two juveniles, the affidavit stated.
Based on the above information, a detective with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office in Florida interviewed the woman who had allegedly had an affair with Harris. She told the detective that she believed Harris exposed himself to her juvenile daughter on multiple occasions, both at her home in Tyler and at Harris' home in Louisiana.
According to the affidavit, the woman described another "skinny dipping" incident that occurred at her pool in Tyler in July 2018 when her daughter was 13.
During the interview, the woman explained that the actual victim in Florida was one of her daughter's friends who had been vacationing with them.
On February 26, the Texas Ranger and the DOJOIG senior special agent observed a forensic interview with the woman's juvenile daughter at the Children's Advocacy Center of Smith County.
