'Evil and disgusting': Days-long Israeli LGBT festival planned near Sodom prompts biblical backlash

'Children's activities' will be on offer amid the 4-day LGBT saturnalia in the desert.
The Israeli government announced on Monday that this June, "the Dead Sea becomes Pride Land, the biggest LGBTQ+ festival ever in the Middle East," adding that "Pride rises at the lowest place on earth."

This celebration of degeneracy and non-straight lifestyle choices - set to take place near what is believed to be the site of Sodom, the city razed by God because of its brazen sexual corruption - will run 24 hours a day from June 1 to June 4.

According the Jerusalem Post, the non-straight festival will raise a city in the desert featuring parties, a central performance arena, art complexes, "relaxation" areas, and "family-friendly areas with children's activities."

"This is not just another festival; it's the biggest thing we've done here," Aaron Cohen, the main producer behind "Pride Land," told the Post. "It's an experience that lives 24/7, from quiet visits to nights of Pride, with a living envelope of music and people."

The promotion of the event by the Israeli government - just one day after the Israel Defense Forces confirmed that one of its soldiers smashed a statue of the crucified Christ outside a church with a sledgehammer - prompted significant backlash among some conservative Christians.

American theologian and pastor Dale Partridge tweeted, "The devil couldn't have written it better. 'The lowest place on earth' 'The Dead Sea becomes pride land.'"

BlazeTV host Auron MacIntyre raised the matter of whether his tax dollars might be subsidizing the event, then asked, "Can anyone very carefully explain to me why American Christians owe anything to this?"

Conservative commentator Michael Knowles insinuated that the Israeli government's announcement answered the question recently posed by the New York Times about the cause of the recent increase in meteor sightings overhead.

Knowles' colleague, Matt Walsh, called the planned festival "absolutely evil and disgusting."

Tomasz Froelich, an Alternative for Germany politician who serves in the European Parliament, noted that "the Patriarch of Jerusalem was denied access to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday for security reasons, but there is comfort: The Pride can take place without a care!"

The eponymous host of BlazeTV's "The John Doyle Show" wrote, "God could do the funniest thing ever."

On Friday, the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C., plugged the event, stating, "You won't see this anywhere else in the region."

While the Israeli government appears keen to get the word out about the Sodom-adjacent LGBT festival, the U.S. State Department has recommended that Americans reconsider travel to the country due to terrorism and civil unrest and instructed travelers to avoid crowds.

A lawsuit filed over a man's overdose death at a former treatment facility is raising broader questions about why state regulators haven't taken stronger action.

SEATTLE - An Enumclaw mother has filed a lawsuit following her son's overdose death at a now-closed substance abuse treatment facility, raising broader questions about why state regulators haven't taken stronger action against those involved despite having substantial evidence of wrongdoing.

Judy Russo, who operates a barbershop in Enumclaw, alleges in her lawsuit that untrained and unqualified staff at Rainier Recovery Centers failed to properly treat her son and falsified medical records. She learned details about the facility's operations through a KING 5 investigation of the treatment center chain published in April.

"They're playing Russian roulette with other people's lives that are vulnerable," Russo said. "I don't think that's right at all."

State records reviewed by KING 5 alleged that the treatment center's owner, Jeremiah Dunlap, was "corrupt" and had established a questionable arrangement with Pierce County DUI lawyer Barbara Bowden. According to state investigators, the arrangement prioritized profits over patient care.
License still valid despite violations

While the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) forced Dunlap to sell his three Rainier Recovery clinics, the agency did not revoke his substance abuse counseling license-despite the documented violations and a previous history of regulatory infractions. Dunlap signed an agreement prohibiting him from owning or managing a treatment center. But he still maintains his professional Substance Use Disorder Professional Certification, which allows him to treat patients.

The Washington State Department of Health declined to comment. "DOH typically does not comment ongoing cases unless or until there is action taken on the license," said spokesperson John Doyle.

However, evidence suggests Dunlap attempted to open a new clinic. The KING 5 Investigators learned that a business named Peninsula Counseling in Gig Harbor had recently applied to open a treatment facility. Application records listed Sherilyn Finlayson, a former Dunlap employee at Rainier Recovery, as the CEO.

DOH was also investigating and determined that Dunlap was behind the proposed operation, in violation of the agreement that he struck when he surrendered his Rainier Recovery facility license.

On October 15, DOH denied the Peninsula Counseling application citing Dunlap's role.

"That looks kind of like what he's doing. He's just out for the money, period," Russo said of Dunlap. "And then if he got by with opening one, well then here let's go get another one."
Bar association, courts also silent

The Pierce County lawyer allegedly involved in the arrangement with Dunlap has faced no apparent disciplinary action from the Washington State Bar Association. KING 5's reporting revealed that Barbara Bowden was engaged in similar conduct a decade ago, yet no action was taken at that time. There is no current evidence of disciplinary proceedings.

A Washington State Bar Association spokesperson said, "We have no public records regarding Barbara Bowden." The spokesperson cited a court rule "...prohibiting us from commenting on (or confirming/denying) discipline proceedings until a grievance reaches a certain level of disciplinary action."

The Pierce County courts in which Bowden practices have refused to comment in response to numerous inquiries from KING 5. She routinely appears with DUI clients in Pierce County District Court, and city courts in Bonney Lake, Fife, Milton, Lakewood, Puyallup, Gig Harbor and Kent.

Both Dunlap and Bowden have previously denied any wrongdoing.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about regulatory oversight in Washington's substance abuse treatment industry and whether agencies are doing enough to protect vulnerable clients when they have documents, witness testimony, and evidence of violations.

Fed's Powell commits to 'act as appropriate' to defend U.S. economy

CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said on Tuesday the central bank will "act as appropriate" in response to risks posed by a trade war, remarks that may open the door to the possibility of a rate cut.
"We do not know how or when these issues will be resolved," Powell said. "We are closely monitoring the implications of these developments for the U.S. economic outlook and, as always, we will act as appropriate to sustain the expansion, with a strong labor market and inflation near our symmetric 2% objective."

The brief statement opened a two-day session at the Chicago Federal Reserve intended to shore up the central bank's policies to prepare for the likely possibility that policymakers will eventually confront another recession with rates near zero and the traditional option of cutting rates exhausted.

The more immediate issue is how the Fed should respond to a trade war expanding on multiple fronts, after U.S. President Donald Trump slapped new 25% tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports and threatened new import taxes on Mexico unless immigration slows. The question of how to respond divides policymakers and markets.

Powell's remarks did not include a reference to the current Fed target interest rate as appropriate, or repeat the pledge to be "patient" before raising or lowering rates again - both standard talking points in recent Fed statements. His comments come a day after St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard said in a speech on Monday that a rate cut may be needed "soon."

Yields on 2-year Treasuries, which are responsive to expectations about Fed policy, fell marginally when Powell spoke to around 1.87% from 1.91%.

"We are likely seeing the beginning of coordinated Fed-speak to prep market participants for at least one rate cut this year," said John Doyle, vice president of dealing and trading at Tempus Inc in Washington.

He said he sees rates as having been appropriate but that uncertainty and tepid inflation presented risks worth monitoring. Over the long run, he said, policymakers may want to be more aggressive, using low rates to let inflation and economic momentum build.

The names of an additional 27 Catholic priests accused of misconduct emerged this week in leaked Buffalo Diocese documents showing that a review board examined allegations against the priests.

A copy of the June 27, 2018 meeting agenda of the Diocesan Review Board, obtained by WKBW-TV, included the names of nearly 100 priests whose cases were being reviewed by the board.

Bishop Richard J. Malone in 2018 publicly identified most of the priests on that agenda as having been credibly accused of sexually abusing children. But Malone has remained silent on 27 of those priests, including a former superintendent of Catholic schools, Monsignor Ted Berg, and a former high-ranking diocesan administrator, Monsignor Albert Rung.

The Diocesan Review Board's primary purpose is to examine cases of alleged child sex abuse, but it's not clear how many of the 27 priests were accused of sexual abuse of minors or if the complaints were found to be credible.
