AUSTIN, Texas - Mitchell Wasek, the 28-year-old son of Buc-ee's co-founder Don Wasek, was arrested on Tuesday and faces 28 charges of invasive visual recordings after he allegedly recorded multiple people using spy camera devices.
According to affidavits obtained by KVUE, two witnesses contacted the Travis County Sheriff's Office in May to report the incidents that allegedly happened at Mitchell Wasek's family's lake house on Lake Travis in Spicewood. Records show Mitchell Wasek's father and Buc-ee's cofounder, Don Wasek, is the owner of the home.
The witnesses told deputies Mitchell Wasek invited them to the house in May. They said two friends accompanied them and one of those friends, who works in cybersecurity, discovered that a charging port plugged into the wall of their bathroom contained a hidden camera.
After discovering the camera, the group of friends left the house with the device, the documents said. They then used a card reader to review the contents of a micro card from the camera and found dozens of videos of themselves and other people in bathrooms and bedrooms "in various states of undress."
A female witness told deputies she also found videos of herself and another friend in the bathroom of Mitchell Wasek's residence in Dallas. The camera and card were handed over to the Dallas Police Department.
The affidavit said the friends were unaware that the recordings existed in the bedroom and bathroom "and indicated they did not consent to being recorded or photographed."
The Dallas Police Department sent the contents of the camera to the Travis County Sheriff's Office, who found 68 video files containing at least 13 male and female individuals filmed in least eight separate rooms. The documents said the videos showed the individuals were recorded using toilets, showering, changing clothes and/or having sex.
The videos dated back to 2021 and included other locations linked to Mitchell Wasek, including his condo in Austin. Deputies obtained Mitchell Wasek's Amazon purchase history, which included several hidden camera devices sent to multiple addresses.
Travis County Jail records show Mitchell Masek was released shortly after his arrest on Tuesday on a $10,000 bond per charge, or $280,000. He faces state jail felony charges that could carry a sentence of up to two years.

Broward County Sheriff sacks deputy union head amid COVID-19 dispute
The sheriff of Broward County, Fl., has fired the head of the sheriff's office deputies union amid a three-year dispute that escalated over accusations that the sheriff was not providing officers with proper protective gear against COVID-19, The Associated Press reported.
In a statement on Thursday, Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said he fired Broward Sheriff's Office Deputies Association head Jeff Bell for engaging in "corrupt practices" and "conduct unbecoming" to his position, per the AP. He also claimed Bell lied to local media outlets about him in an attempt to prevent his election to a full term in Nov. 2020.
Tony additionally said that the firing was unanimously recommended by the sheriff's office's professional standards board.

"The evidence shows Bell used corrupt practices to try to prevent me from being elected sheriff by providing misinformation and lies to the media to create fear and distrust among [Broward Sheriff's Office] employees and within the community during a global pandemic," Tony said in his statement.
"This type of behavior is egregious at any time but even more harmful and shameful during an unprecedented health crisis," Tony continued.

Cop Fired for Cowering in Fear as Gunman Slaughtered Children Gets Rehired, with Full Back Pay
Parkland, FL - A sheriff's deputy who was fired after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting for cowering by his car while Nicolas Cruz slaughtered children inside, is back on the job - and likely receiving six figures of back pay.
According to the Sun Sentinel, an arbitrator ruled this week that Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony acted 13 days too late when he fired deputy Josh Stambaugh last year for his conduct during the February 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
State law says discipline against law enforcement officers must occur within 180 days of an investigation's completion but apparently that didn't happen. It is unknown exactly how much Stambaugh will receive in back pay, but he earned more than $150,000 in 2018, including overtime.
According to a report out of ABC, a state investigative commission found that Stambaugh was working an off-duty shift at a nearby school when he responded to reports of shots fired at Stoneman Douglas. He got out of his truck, put on his bulletproof vest and took cover for about five minutes after hearing the shots, according to body camera footage. Stambaugh then drove to a nearby highway instead of going toward the school.
Despite clearly neglecting his duties - to the point of costing children their lives - this coward cop will receive a large sum of back bay and his badge.
"Once again, an arbitrator with no connection or association with Broward County has made a flawed decision to reinstate a deputy who was terminated for his response to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
Naturally, the police union applauded the decision to rehire the deputy and decried the sheriff's decision to fire them.
Jeff Bell, president of the Broward patrol deputies union said that firing Stambaugh after the deadline was "a waste of taxpayer money on cases where the agency knows it violated Florida State Statutes."
While this may be shocking, Stambaugh is the second cop to be reinstated after being fired for being a coward doing the shooting.
Sgt. Brian Miller was fired 16 months after the shooting. After former sheriff Scott Isreal refused to fire the cop, his replacement, Tony, fired Miller and then deputies Stambaugh and Edward Eason a few weeks later.
As the Sentinal reported at the time:
Miller was the first supervisor on the scene. He arrived in time to hear three or four shots. As a supervisor, he didn't rush to take command. Instead, a state commission investigating the shooting found that Miller took his time putting on a bulletproof vest and hid behind his car on Holmberg Road, not going on the radio for 10 minutes.
"Miller failed to coordinate or direct deputies' actions and did not direct or coordinate an immediate response into the school," a report from a commission said. "Sergeant Miller's actions were ineffective and he did not properly supervise the scene."
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, a member of the commission, called Miller "an absolute, total failure."
Now, this absolute, total failure is back on the streets along with his other total failure fellow cop, ready to cower behind a car the next time he faces an actual threat.

A second BSO deputy is placed on 'restricted duty' after Parkland shooting, union says
A second Broward Sheriff's Office deputy has been placed on restricted duty two weeks after a state public safety commission revealed widespread failures in how the law enforcement agency responded to Florida's deadliest school shooting, the president of BSO's deputies' union said Friday.
The deputy, Edward Eason, did not immediately enter the high school campus where a gunman killed 17 people on Feb. 14, state investigators told members of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission earlier this month. And the investigators said body-camera footage and audio recordings contradicted Eason's reasons for staying outside.
Eason arrived in the area of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland roughly three-and-a-half minutes after former student Nikolas Cruz opened fire. Cruz had already shot all of the 34 people who were killed or wounded. Many were in desperate need of first aid.
Although Cruz kept firing rounds inside Stoneman Douglas' freshman building for another two minutes, Eason did not head toward the gunfire, according to investigators. Instead, he drove his cruiser to the west side of campus. Then he took time to put on his bulletproof vest and adjust his body camera, investigators said.
Eason, an 18-year BSO veteran assigned to the Parkland district, later told state investigators that he was not sure where the gunfire was coming from. But investigators said body-camera footage showed Eason had pointed to the freshman building and told civilians shots had been fired there. That conversation happened soon after Cruz stopped firing, dropped his rifle and fled. The shooting lasted for roughly six minutes.
Jeff Bell, president of the Broward Sheriff's Office Deputies Association, confirmed Friday that Eason had been placed on restricted duty, although he said BSO did not give a reason. Restricted duty means that Eason, who could not be reached for comment, must surrender his badge and gun. A BSO spokeswoman did not immediately respond to an interview request.
Bell said in an interview that Eason and other deputies were being "scapegoated" by Broward Sheriff Scott Israel.
"We're already filing a grievance on it," Bell said. "They're trying to make up another charge. The deputies are being made the fall guys.

BSO Deputies Association schedules no-confidence vote in Scott Israel
The Broward Sheriff's Office Deputies Association announced that it has scheduled a no-confidence vote on Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel.
Union President and BSO Deputy Jeff Bell said the move follows many instances of suspected "malfeasance, misfeasance, failure to maintain fiduciary responsibility by the sheriff, failure to properly investigate possible criminal conduct by members of his senior command staff and the lack of leadership that has crushed morale throughout the agency."
The vote comes months after many have called for Israel's resignation in the midst of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that happened on Feb. 14.
Despite the calls for his resignation, Israel said he will not step down.
This is the first time in Broward County's history that such a vote has been called for.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Broward Sheriff's Office Deputies Association has scheduled a no-confidence vote for Sheriff Scott Israel.
Deputy Jeff Bell, who also serves as union president, said in a statement Friday the move "follows many instances of suspected malfeasance, misfeasance, failure to maintain fiduciary responsibility by the sheriff, failure to properly investigate possible criminal conduct by members of his senior command staff and the lack of leadership that has crushed morale throughout the agency."
