notes/timeline regarding NABU
NOW HERE IS SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT:
January 21 - 24, 2016: Officials with the National Security Council, the FBI, the Department of Justice and the State Department (Working Group???) met with various Ukrainian authorities in Washington, D.C. to discuss their version of anti-corruption efforts (to stop people like Shokin). The discussion included reviving a closed investigation of payments allegedly made years earlier to certain U.S. figures (Manafort) by the Party of Regions, the former President Yanukovych. It is after this meeting, the "black ledger" is magically produced from hiding and made public. When the ledger was presented to the U.S. officials, they were only interested in the information on Manafort, ignoring the information about Obama White House counsel Gregory Craig who also had taken payments from Yanukovych's party at the same time as Manafort. Also discussed, was the closure of the investigation of Burisma. The director of NABU was also present in D.C. from January 19-21 for a working visit.Coincidence??? Participating with the Working Group???

I only add the following because it was on the same day and because it involvesGulen, of the Muslim Brotherhood:
Also on this day, Obama signed the executive order for the Iran Deal, finalizing it. He did not put it through congress since he knew it would not pass, while repeatedly assuring Congress he would not do it. Iran never signed it however. In addition, Obama surreptitiously gave $1.7 billion cash, delivering it on pallets from Europe. He lied about that, too, until it was revealed later in September. He continued favoring Iran over Israel. The plan to run the pipelines through Turkey had one snag, howeverErdogan. Erdogan was against Syria, but Obama was beholden to Syria since it was a close ally of Iranhence why Iran didn't sigh the deal. A coup was fomented in Turkey to remove Erdogan to fix it, Obama and the Clintons supporting Fethullah Gulen. ==Yet another snag was Flynn warning against Gulen (as part of his firm's contract for a private Dutch company, which the CIA used to frame FLYNN to boot–two birds with one stone), eventually writing an op-ed in The Hill in November. Gulen also donated to the Clinton Foundation. However, the coup would fail (April, 2017). Oopsie.

Laura Ingraham
Laura Ingraham had a guest role on The Simpsons in 1987, two years after graduating from Dartmouth with a BA, and well before getting her law degree in 1991. Her first gig hosting a talk show was on MSNBC was in 1996. Weird, isn't it, to have an acting gig from out of nowhere with the predictive programming cartoon show The Simpsons?
She also had a charmed life after graduating from the University of Virgina Law School in 1991, like she was being groomed for something. After landing some high profile jobs after graduation (see below), she worked for a law firm named Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.
This law firm came up several times before, including representing Paul Manifort. Also, if you remember, a hotshot at that firm was named Gregory Craig, who was the top lawyer in the Obama White House. Craig was charged and went to trial last summer for lying to the Justice Department about his ties to the Ukrainian government. Of course, he got off – by Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/former-obama-white-house-counsel-set-to-stand-trial
When Craig left the firm, he was replaced by Robert Bauer, Obama's personal attorney. He's also written many articles urging congress to keep investigating trump.

Other Alumini from the Firm:
Alex van der Zwaan, attorney, charged with lying to federal investigators about his interactions with Rick Gates in an investigation in Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections.
Patrick B. Fitzgerald, former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; as special counsel for the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Special Counsel, the federal prosecutor in charge of the investigation of the Valerie Plame Affair.
Robert S. Pirie, co-chairman and CEO of Rothschild, North America, senior managing director of Bear Stearns & Co., and vice-chairman of Investment Banking at SG Cowen Securities Corporation
You get the picture…. Just another limited hangout/Cabal training ground.

Laura Ingraham. Can you say "CIA asset?" Can you say "Sleeper?"
Here's more on Laura from wiki:
Career
In the late 1980s, Ingraham worked as a speechwriter in the Reagan administration for the Domestic Policy Advisor.[7] She also briefly served as editor of The Prospect, the magazine issued by Concerned Alumni of Princeton. After law school, in 1991, she served as a law clerk for Judge Ralph K. Winter Jr., of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, in New York and subsequently clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. She then worked as an attorney at the New York-based law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.[8] In 1995, she appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine in connection with a story about young conservatives.[9]
Television show host
Ingraham has had three stints as a cable television host. She first became a host on MSNBC in 1996.[11] In the late 1990s, she became a CBS commentator and hosted the MSNBC program Watch It!.[12] Several years later, on her radio program, Ingraham began campaigning for another cable television show. She gained her wish in 2008, when Fox News Channel gave her a three-week trial run for a new show entitled Just In.[13][14] In October 2017, she became the host of a new Fox News Channel program, The Ingraham Angle.[15]

Attorney General William P. Barr names Timothy Shea, one of his counselors, as the District's interim U.S. Attorney
January 30, 2020 at 3:13 PM EST
Attorney General William P. Barr named former federal prosecutor Timothy Shea as the District's interim U.S. Attorney, a Justice Department spokesman said Thursday.
Shea, 59, currently serves as a counselor to Barr at the Justice Department. He will oversee the nation's largest U.S. attorney's office. The 300 prosecutors there handle federal crimes, as well as local violent crimes within the city.
The announcement comes just a day before Jessie K. Liu, the city's current U.S. Attorney leaves office on Friday.
Liu, 46, has served in the post for a little over two years. The White House announced last month that President Trump planned to nominate her to become the Treasury Department's undersecretary for terrorism and financial crimes.
Prosecutors there have taken to trial former Trump confidante Roger Stone, campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former Obama White House counsel Gregory Craig. They are managing a grand jury investigation into former acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, who is accused of misleading federal investigators about a media disclosure, and are handling a leak case in which they have focused at least some of their questioning on former FBI Director James B. Comey. Both Comey and McCabe have been outspoken critics of President Trump, and the D.C. U.S. Attorney's Office has faced criticism that it is unfairly targeting the president's political rivals.
Shea previously served as an assistant prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia. According to his LinkedIn page, from 1997 to 1999, he was chief counsel for the Senate's subcommittee on investigations under then chair Sen. Susan M. Collins (R-Maine). There he investigated public corruption, securities fraud, money laundering, health care fraud, government waste and other fraud and abuse cases.

Q Research General #8046: Public Awakening Edition
This is a really good article for those interested in the Gregory Craig-Manafort-Ukraine-Podesta Group-Clinton Foundation FARA saga.
It's too involved for me to summarize, but remember the name Doug Schoen. He was a longtime pollster for the Clintons, and was deeply involved in putting all the players together in Ukraine.
https://www.peoplespunditdaily.com/opinion/2019/04/23/fara-enforcement-exposes-democrats/
Experts believe that Craig's indictment will trigger "shock waves" through legal circles given Craig's ties to former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and, by extension, the Trump administration. What remains underreported is the fact that the Ukrainian trail of influence that implicates Manafort and Craig leads directly to Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The Clinton Foundation has been widely accused of major FARA violations as numerous foreign governments donated lavish sums while Clinton was secretary of state.
The walls are closing in on these people from 6 sides at once.

Trial Date Set For Obama Aide Ensnared In Mueller Probe
Former White House counsel Gregory Craig will stand trial in a Washington, D.C., federal court Aug. 12 on charges that he made false and misleading statements to the Department of Justice regarding work he performed for a foreign government.
U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson set the date in a Friday scheduling order. The order provides that Craig has until May 10 to file a motion to dismiss the charges. Jackson said any changes to the schedule are unlikely.
"Given this compressed schedule, which the parties have considered and requested, the court will not be inclined to grant any motions to extend the deadlines set forth above absent exigent circumstances," Jackson's order reads.
Craig served as the White House's top lawyer under former President Barack Obama. After leaving the Obama administration, he joined Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom to lead a global policy and litigation group.
Skadden Arps worked with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort on behalf of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych beginning in 2012. Manafort and the firm prepared and promoted a report concerning Ukraine's prosecution of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, one of Yanukovych's domestic political adversaries. The Tymoshenko prosecution was widely criticized in the west as a sham.
The Justice Department says Craig misled government lawyers who inquired about the nature of the firm's work for the Yanukovych government throughout 2012 and 2013. Special counsel Robert Mueller placed those efforts under renewed scrutiny.

Q Research General #7985: A Good Day For America Edition
Ex-Obama White House counsel's trial set for August
Former White House counsel Gregory Craig will go to trial in August to face charges of lying to investigators who were working for special counsel Robert Mueller, a federal judge in Washington, D.C., said Friday.
Craig, who worked under former President Obama from 2009-2010, is scheduled to begin his trial at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 12, according to court filings first reported by The New York Times. He is accused of lying and withholding information about former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's lobbying work in Ukraine from investigators working for Mueller's now-shuttered probe.
Craig pleaded not guilty to the charges earlier this month and called the accusations "unjustified."
"This prosecution is unprecedented and unjustified," Craig said at the time. "I am confident that both the judge and the jury will agree with me."
Manafort, who remains imprisoned after being found guilty of a slew of financial crimes related to the lobbying work for pro-Russia politicians in Ukraine, originally hired Craig's former law firm to write a report defending the Ukrainian government's decision to imprison its former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, who was a political opponent of Manafort's client.
Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who also oversaw Manafort's charges in D.C., is overseeing Craig's case.
His former law firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, agreed to register as a foreign agent with as part of a settlement with the Justice Department earlier this year.

list of other crime referrals found by the special investigator
Hey, I mostly lurk, but while putting together a present for my ultra liberal friend I noticed the second to last page of the report is labeled D-5.
I hadn't personally read to that point and went back a page to see what is was as the entirety of the page D-5 is redacted.
It is the list of other crime referrals found by the special investigator.
Sorted Alphabetically by last name. The previous page a redacted section for someone with a last name prior to Cohen.(Clinton?)
Two sections after Cohen but before Gregory Craig(And another name withheld) Skadden, Arps, Slate Meagher & Flomp LLP.
And nine more sections for last names after Craig.
Is this D-5?

Q Research General #7966: Easter Exoneration Edition
Any anons have links to the U1 digs a while back? I want to cross walk some names with a FARA dig I was doing on Skadden, Arps, ect… mentioned in the mueller report appendix D.
First off, we have Gregory Craig, obama's white house counsel who was just charged april 11th due to not filing a FARA with regards to dealings in Ukraine. What isn't really noted is that he, along with several others were retained by the Ukraine Ministry of Justice with respect to numerous charges against Yulia Tymoshenko in 2011 and 2012 for all manner of bribery, embezzelment, a potential assassination, ect.. Interesting fact about her husband Olekdandr: he was the CEO of the UNITED ENERGY SYSTEMS of UKRAINE.
Craig said he didn't file a FARA form because "he was afraid other attornies couldn't hold federal positions in the future." The real reason he didn't file was that it would open full access to Ukraine dealings by skadden, alps, etc.. Considering the timing, they may have been a go between for the U1 bullshit under the guise of helping the Ukraine MOJ who has been out to get Tymoshenko since the early 2000s.
What really caught my eye is that this occurred in 2011 to 2012, but the FARA submissions under skadden, alps, etc.. were submitted Jan 18, 2019 (8 total) within seconds of each other, meaning all were sent together. All except one were stamped official Jan 19, 2019. The 8th submission was stamped Mar 14, 2019 and it also stands out because it was a british national, Matthew Cowie that submitted it. I was unaware that non US citizens were required to do so, especially since this guy is based out of London with a group called Dechert, LLP. I get muh feelz that this guy is somehow tied to the UK gov / intel and is the redacted name next to Craig's.
Here are the names associated with the Ukraine FARA submissions if anons want to dig or can connect other dots. Apologies for the length, God's love to all involved. WWG1WGA.

Just sptballing here, but Page D-4 of the Mueller report references to Gregory Craig and another name that is redacted. It appears that both work at the same law firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LL, and may have acted together.
Gregory Craig left the firm immediately after Paul Manafort was indicted. Craig's replacement was Robert Bauer.
Robert Bauer
In November 2009, he was named to take over the duties at the firm
White House Counsel,[3] upon the resignation of Gregory Craig.[4] Bauer was President Obama's personal attorney and the general counsel of the Obama for America presidential campaign prior to his appointment as White House Counsel. He has also previously served as the general counsel to the Democratic National Committee,[5] and had advised President Obama since Mr. Obama came to Washington, D.C. in 2005 as U. S. Senator.[6]
He also writes articles that help with the cheer leading for congress to keep investigating trump.

9. In summer 2008, during the presidential campaign, Obama decided to support legislation (specifically, an amendment to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) to granting legal immunity to telecommunications companies that cooperated with the Bush administration's warrantless NSA wiretapping program. In his role as an advisor to the Obama campaign, Craig defended Obama's reversal, and said that Obama "concluded that with FISA expiring, that it was better to get a compromise than letting the law expire."[24] This was incorrect, as FISA has no expiration date.
10. In late summer and fall 2008, Craig, a skilled trial lawyer, assumed the role of John McCain in Barack's preparations for the presidential debates.
11. Gregory Craig is an American lawyer and former White House Counsel under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2010.
11. Craig's ouster following the "whisper campaign" against him angered his friends and supporters inside and outside the White House, who viewed him as a scapegoat. Obama's handling of Craig's resignation was also criticized in the media. Steve Clemons called it "the assassination of Greg Craig" and said that "the White House counsel was done in by a scurrilous leaks campaign."
12. In 2011, Craig initially represented former Senator John Edwards, a former presidential and vice presidential candidate, in the federal prosecution of Edwards on charges of illegally using campaign funds to cover up his affair with Rielle Hunter.[40][41] Edwards was subsequently acquitted
13. Later in 2018, NBC and CNN reported that following a referral from Mueller's office, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York was investigating Craig and others, including ex-lobbyist Tony Podesta and former Republican U.S. Representative Vin Weber, as part of a broader investigation into the activities of Paul Manafort.
14. He was indicted in 2019 on charges of lying to federal prosecutors about the business work he did in Ukraine with Paul Manafort.

I don't think it's any coincidence that every anthill we've kicked in here for the last week or two seems to be full of ants yelling "Ukraine". Certainly not Greg Craig.
Take a look at Craig's history, even just the basics from Wikipedia. One event after another, the patterns & ideology forming.

Q Research General #7913: Nothing Good Comes From The NYT Edition
Federal judge considers scheduling ex-Obama counsel's trial for August
A federal judge on Monday weighed setting the trial for former Obama White House counsel Gregory Craig for August, according to multiple media reports.
U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson reportedly appeared receptive to an August trial date during a hearing Monday, as suggested by Craig's attorneys.
But The National Law Journal reported that one of the federal prosecutors in the case, Fernando Campoamar-Sanchez, resisted the suggestion of an early August trial, saying the government was "hoping to get a little more time than that."
Craig, who left the Obama White House in early 2010, was indicted last week on charges that he made false and misleading statements to the Justice Department tied to lobbying work Paul Manafort hired Craig's now-former law firm in 2012 to do in Ukraine.
Federal prosecutors allege that Craig made false statements about his media contacts surrounding the release of a report the law firm – Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom – wrote about Ukraine's imprisonment of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
Craig last week pleaded not guilty to the charges. And his lawyer reportedly said during Monday's hearing that Craig will argue that he cannot be charged for omitting facts to federal investigators.
"That is not the law, but that is what this indictment is based on," Craig's attorney William W. Taylor said during the hearing, according to The Washington Post. "That is what this case is going to be about."
Berman gave both parties until June 21 to enter legal filings on whether Craig had violated federal law, The Post reported.
The judge also ordered that Craig turn over his passport to authorities and seek permission before traveling internationally. He is allowed to travel within the U.S. without seeking permission, but must give officials his itinerary two business days before any domestic trip.
The charges against Craig originally stemmed from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, before the matter was referred to the Southern District of New York and then again to the Justice Department.
Craig has maintained that he did no wrongdoing in the case, saying in a video posted after his indictment last week that the case "is unprecedented and unjustified."
"I am confident that both the judge and the jury will agree with me," he said.
Craig left Skadden last year. The law firm reached a settlement with the Justice Department in January, agreeing to register as a foreign agent and pay the Treasury Department $4.6 million over its work for Ukraine.

Q Research General #7891: Misspellings Matter Edition
Why is the indictment of Greg Craig important
A few facts:
1. Gregory Bestor Craig is an American lawyer and former White House Counsel under President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2010.
2. Craig attended Yale Law School, where he was a member of the same class as Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham.
3. In 1981, Craig was a member of the team that represented John W. Hinckley, Jr., who attempted to assassinate Ronald Reagan; Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
4. Craig also defended Ted Kennedy's nephew William Kennedy Smith on charges of assault; William Kennedy Smith had earlier been acquitted on rape charges in 1991.
5. Craig worked in the White House during the Clinton administration from 1998 to 1999, holding the title of assistant to the President and special counsel.
6. Craig served as assistant to the President and special counsel in the White House of President Bill Clinton, where he directed the team defending Clinton against impeachment.
7. Ruff, Kendall, and Craig were three members of a five-member team of lawyers defending the president; the other two were Cheryl D. Mills and Dale Bumpers
8. During the Elián González affair in 2000, Craig represented Juan Miguel Gonzáles, the Cuban father of six-year-old Elián González, in an international child custody dispute involving "the volatile field of Cuban-American relations" which ended with the boy's return to Cuba.

Q Research General #7887: Fight Back Against Fake News Edition
A quick rehash of how Gregory Craig was closely connected with Paul Manafort and also the Podesta Group.
Gregory Craig, Obama's White House council from 2009-2010, was charged on Thursday with lying to federal investigators. Craig's indictment involved his prior association with Paul Manafort and their related work lobbying for the Ukraine in the US. Their problems stem from failing to register to register as Foreign Agents (FARA).
After he left the White House, Gregory Craig became a partner at the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where he eventually became the the lead attorney supervising the firm's work for former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovic. Craig resigned from the firm immediately after Manafort was indicted (which probably means he was given the boot).
Tony Podesta is under investigation for similar FARA violations, which were also related to his activities in Ukraine. Podesta's company was one of many firms that worked on Paul Manafort's campaign, which promoted Ukraine's image in the West. In fact, Tony Podesta and Vin Weber both received legal advise from Gregory Craig. Both of their firms have said they registered under the Lobbying Disclosure Act, rather than FARA, on the advice of lawyers at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, Craig's former firm.
All of these actors were working together in what seems like a racketeering/RICCO/money laundering scam, with Gregory Craig finding legal loopholes and protection from all their political ties.
Prosecutors allege that Craig sought to hide the payments the firm received from the wealthy Ukrainian. They said he worked with a lobbyist to create false invoice from Skadden to the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice, making it appear more of the firm's bills were being paid by the government.
So the logical progression would be Paul Manafort → Gregory Craig → Tony Podesta (Next?)
Furthermore, how could John Podesta not have been deeply involved in any of this? The Podesta brothers founded the Podesta Group together in 1988. Although John was supposedly not involved with the The Podesta Group for years, wouldn't Tony be the type to leverage his connections with Obama administration officials in every conceivable way possible? How often do brothers talk?
The investigation into the Podesta Group will also lead to other interesting connections. For example, The Podesta Group also represented Russia-owned Uranium One.

Gregory Craig, former Obama White House counsel, indicted for offering false statements related to Ukraine work in latest Mueller fallout
Washington attorney Gregory B. Craig, who served as White House counsel for President Barack Obama, was charged Thursday with lying to federal officials who were examining whether he should have registered as a foreign lobbyist for legal work he did for the Ukrainian government in 2012.
The indictment stems from work Craig did with GOP lobbyist Paul Manafort while Craig was a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, the law firm he joined after ending his tenure at the White House. Manafort, the former campaign chairman to President Trump, pleaded guilty last year to charges related to his Ukraine lobbying.

Craig's lawyers had said in a statement Wednesday that they expected he would be indicted, calling the action "a misguided abuse of prosecutorial discretion."
"Mr. Craig is not guilty of any charge," attorneys William W. Taylor III and William Murphy said.
The case, brought by the U.S. attorney's office in Washington and the Justice Department's National Security Division, grew out of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 campaign.
Craig was charged with two felony counts in connection with alleged false statements related to his Ukraine work. He allegedly made the statements to Justice Department officials who were evaluating whether he should have registered as a foreign agent and in an interview with Mueller's prosecutors.
Craig, 74, is the first prominent Democratic figure to be charged as a result of a foreign lobbying investigation spun out of Mueller's probe
Craig resigned from Skadden in April 2018 amid a building investigation into whether the firm's lawyers failed to register as foreign lobbyists for their engagement on behalf of the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice.

Q Research General #7855: More Than The Gist Edition
Gregory Craig, who served as White House counsel to President Barack Obama, was charged with lying and concealing information from federal authorities in the first case against a prominent Democrat stemming from Russia special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.
The charges center on work Craig performed in 2012 on behalf of a pro-Russian political faction in Ukraine, part of an illicit lobbying effort by Paul Manafort, the former chairman of Donald Trump's presidential campaign.
Manafort was one of six top Trump associates charged in Mueller's inquiry into Russian efforts to influence the 2016 election. He was sentenced to a combined prison term of more than seven years last month after financial fraud convictions in Virginia and Washington, all related to his work in Ukraine.
Craig, 74, is accused of making false statements and concealing information from the Justice Department's Foreign Agents Registration Unit regarding his work for the Ukrainian government. People who lobby on behalf of foreign governments in the USA are required to register with the department. Craig was also charged with repeating those lies to Mueller's investigators in 2017.
Craig's attorneys, William Taylor and William Murphy, called the government action an abuse of power. "Mr. Craig is not guilty of any charge and the government's stubborn insistence on prosecuting Mr. Craig is a misguided abuse of prosecutorial discretion," the attorneys said in a joint statement.
The lobbying campaign happened after Craig left the Obama administration and before Trump began seeking the presidency.
The attorney's former law firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, agreed in January to pay $4.6 million to the Justice Department for its work on behalf of Ukraine's government. At that time, prosecutors did not identify Craig but said a senior partner at the firm had lied to the department about the work to avoid having to register with the government when working on behalf of a foreign power.
Skadden was hired to write a report about the prosecution of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who was sentenced to seven years in prison for abusing the powers of her office. The country's new government, closely aligned with Russia, sought to portray the trial as fair and improve Ukraine's public image, but Craig didn't want to report the work under the registration act, the indictment says.
"I don't want to register as a foreign agent under FARA," Craig wrote Feb. 13, 2012, according to the indictment. "I think we don't have to with this assignment, yes?"
Craig secured a $4 million commitment for the work after meeting with an unnamed, wealthy Ukrainian on April 6, 2012, according to the indictment. Craig negotiated with the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice for a contract that falsely stated the work wouldn't require reporting to the U.S. government and would be worth about $12,000, the indictment says.
Members of the law firm again discussed whether to report the work to the U.S. government. "I don't really care who you ask but we need an answer from someone who we can rely on with a straight face," Craig replied April 16, 2012, according to the indictment.
Craig's firm received the $4 million from the private Ukrainian as promised after it passed through a third-party bank account in Cyprus, the indictment says. A Ukrainian newspaper questioned in an editorial the publicly announced amount of $12,000, saying it "could not seriously have been the total amount that Ukraine was paying," the indictment says.
The firm's lawyers discussed disclosing the larger payment, but the Ukrainian who sent the money objected to being identified, the indictment says. The firm backdated a letter and invoices to the Ukrainian government totaling $1.25 million to give the appearance of a larger official payment, according to the indictment.
Craig's firm had to avoid publicly promoting its report favoring Ukraine's new government for fear of running afoul of the U.S. reporting law, but Craig provided background briefings to reporters who questioned the fairness of Tymoshenko's prosecution, the indictment says.
Craig was congratulated on the resulting media coverage, the indictment says. "People in Kiev are very happy," a lobbyist wrote Craig on Dec. 12, 2012, according to the indictment. "You are 'THE MAN.'"
Craig, whose case was referred by Mueller to other Justice prosecutors, was Obama's White House counsel in 2009 and 2010.

Former Obama aide expected to be charged soon: reports
By Zack Budryk - 04/10/19 08:35 PM EDT
https://thehill.com/homenews/438356-former-obama-aide-expected-to-be-charged-soon-report
Former Obama White House counsel Gregory Craig expects to face federal charges in connection to his 2012 work for Ukraine, according to the Washington Post.
The expected charges relate to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation and illegal lobbying done by former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort for the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice, according to the Post. Manafort pleaded guilty to charges relating to his work for Ukraine last year.
Craig's attorneys have called the expected charges a "misguided abuse of prosecutorial discretion."
"This case was thoroughly investigated by the [Southern District of New York] and that office decided not to pursue charges against Mr. Craig. We expect an indictment by the DC US Attorney's Office at the request of the National Security Division," Craig's lawyers said in a statement, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The probe into Craig's activity in Ukraine was transferred to the Southern District of New York from Mueller's office and then back to the Justice Department, according to the WSJ.
The expected charges relate to the Ukrainian government hiring him and his then-law firm to evaluate the former Ukrainian prime minister's corruption trial.
The firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, paid the Justice Department a $4.6 million settlement in January and admitted to misleading the government about whether it acted as a foreign agent during its Ukraine work, blaming Craig for the misleading information, according to the WSJ.
Investigators identified an allegedly false statement in a series of letters back and forth between Craig and the Justice Department about the timing of his contact with reporters, according to the newspaper, citing people familiar with the matter.
Prosecutors also reportedly believe Craig concealed a public relations firm's involvement from the Justice Department, according to the WSJ.
Craig joined Skadden in 2010, after serving as White House counsel under Obama. He also worked at the State Department and as special counsel to the president in the '90s under former President Bill Clinton.
He would be the first prominent Democrat charged as a result of Mueller's investigation, according to the Post.
The White House and Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.

Gregory Craig, who worked as the White House counsel under former President Barack Obama, expects to be indicted by federal prosecutors in connection to lobbying work he did for the Ukrainian government in 2012, his lawyers told The Washington Post.
Craig worked with Paul Manafort, the former chairman of President Donald Trump's campaign, on the lobbying work on behalf of the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice in 2012. At the time, The Post reported, Craig was a partner at Sadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.
According to his lawyers, Craig expects to be indicted by the US attorney's office in Washington, DC, at the request of the Justice Department's national security division. The case stemmed from the special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 US election.
Craig resigned from Skadden last April, and his lawyers say he is innocent of any wrongdoing.
The law firm catapulted to the spotlight in the Russia probe when the Dutch lawyer Alex van der Zwaan pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI related to his work for the firm and Manafort.
Manafort asked Skadden in 2012 to compile a report about the 2011 trial of the former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko - an effort Van der Zwaan was involved in. Manafort's request was made at the behest of Viktor Yanukovych, then the Ukrainian president and Tymoshenko's rival in the country's 2010 election.
Tymoshenko was jailed in 2011 after the Ukrainian government convicted her of abuse of power. Her trial and subsequent conviction were criticized by human-rights groups and deemed politically motivated by the US, the UK, German, Italy, Spain, and other European countries.
Skadden was roped into the controversy over the Tymoshenko report when it emerged that the former Ukrainian Justice Minister Oleksandr Lavrynovych embezzled over $1 million to pay the law firm for its work.
Skadden has done a significant amount of consulting for Russian oligarchs in Moscow and abroad. It has also represented Alfa Bank in a number of financial disputes stretching back years. "I don't think it's a coincidence that [Van der Zwaan] decided to marry daughter of [German Khan]," said Ilya Zaslavskiy, the Head of Research at the Free Russia Foundation, a US-based non-profit.
After facing mounting pressure from American and Ukrainian prosecutors, Skadden refunded about half the amount it was paid for the Tymoshenko report to the Ukrainian government in June 2017. Three months later, Mueller's office raised more questions to Skadden about its work for Yanukovych in 2012.

DOJ Moves FARA Probe to DC
March 18, 2019 4:11 pm
Federal prosecutors in Washington, D.C. have taken over a criminal investigation into whether former Obama White House counsel Gregory Craig failed to register as a foreign agent after the case was moved from New York in January, the New York Times reported Monday.
The decision to move the case from the Southern District of New York to D.C. comes as the Justice Department suggested it would step up prosecution of illegal foreign lobbying cases.
Craig faces allegations that he failed to register as a lobbyist for the Ukrainian government for work he did in 2012. Ukraine hired Craig and a team of attorneys from Skadden to write a report whitewashing the prosecution of one of the government's top political opponents.
The New York Times reported that two other supposed subjects of the investigation - lobbyist Tony Podesta and Mercury Public Affairs - will remain with Manhattan federal prosecutors.

Obama White House counsel, Greg Craig, is getting indicted
Mr. Craig, 74, would be the first Democrat to be charged in a case spinning out of the special counsel's investigation - a distinction that could be used to rebut accusations leveled by Mr. Trump and his supporters that the investigation is a partisan witch hunt.
An Ivy League-educated lawyer who moved easily between elite law firms and government for more than four decades, Mr. Craig worked on foreign policy and other issues during the administrations of President Bill Clinton and President Obama, and joined Skadden Arps in 2010 to create a division focused on what he called "international troubleshooting."

US Officials Investigating Obama Admin. Lawyer for FARA Violations
In an attempt to prove that the law applies equally, federal prosecutors have reinvigorated the investigation determining whether Gregory Craig, former Obama White House counsel, failed to register as a foreign agent over ties to Paul Manafort's lobbying work for Kiev.
Craig, Democratic super-lobbyist Tony Podesta and Republican strategist Vin Weber were initially roped into special counsel Robert Mueller's collusion probe before he referred their case to prosecutors in New York, Sputnik reported. On Sunday, the Washington Post reported that federal investigators had "stepped up" the investigation into Craig.
After Mueller handed the investigation to the United States Attorney for Southern District of New York's in April 2018, critics alleged that Mueller didn't bring down indictments himself because they didn't align with the goal of taking down Donald Trump.
For Jim Kavanagh, editor of The Polemicist blog, the latest development is a sign that investigators are trying to make it seem as though they're not just trying to take down Republican-linked individuals, he told Radio Sputnk's Loud & Clear on Monday.
"It is kind of obviously opportunistic and selective persecution," Kavanagh told host John Kiriakou. "It's like laws against jaywalking. Who gets stopped for that? It's only going to be the people the cops want to stop for some other reason." Nevertheless, Craig has yet to be indicted.
Court filings obtained by the Washington Post detail that Craig's former law firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate Meagher & Flom, was paid some $4 million to review to the prosecution of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's rival, in 2012. Through an offshore account, Manafort paid the law firm for a 187-page report on the trial and imprisonment of Tymoshenko.
Tymoshenko was convicted in October 2011 of exceeding her powers as premier while negotiating a 2009 gas contract with Russia. She was sentenced to serve seven years in prison. The Ukrainian politician was later released from jail in 2014.
Attorneys for the former Obama White House counsel maintain that even though Craig wrote the Tymoshenko report, he did not play a role in Manafort's lobbying campaign.
"Mr. Craig never disseminated Skadden's report on the Tymoshenko trial to US government officials, and he did not discuss Skadden's findings with officials in the Executive Branch or the Congress or their staffs," Craig's attorneys told the Post.
"Moreover, Mr. Craig's few media contacts about the report were not part of an effort to promote the report on behalf of a foreign government. As a result, he was not required to register."
Though doubtful that prosecutors will bring charges against Craig, Kavanagh suggested that the legal proceedings would likely lead to an increase in foreign agent registrations as a precaution among the Washington elite. On August 31, prosecutors obtained a guilty plea from longtime DC lobbyist W. Samuel Patten for illegally advancing Ukraine's interests from 2014 to 2017, Sputnik News reported.
"People will hide out for a while, lay low and make sure that they've submitted their [Foreign Agents Registration Act] registration forms," the editor said, before predicting that fears would die down, and things would revert back after some time.
"If we're going to be serious about policing relationships between lobbyists and foreign regimes, we're going to have to do a lot more than this," Kavanagh added, emphasizing the importance of being consistent in the application of the law.

Poorly written article but it does bring light on the Podesta, Weber, and Craig referrals. The Craig referral is of particular interest to me.
One source said that former Obama White House counsel Greg Craig, a former partner at law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, is also part of the inquiry.
Remember, Greg Craig abruptly resigned from Skadden under the guise of "retirement." Skadden did work for Ukraine in 2012. That attorney Van der Zwaan who pled guilty to 18 USC 1001, lying to investigators, was an associate at that firm.
Greg Craig has retired from Skadden and his name has been scrubbed from the law firm's website.
Craig, a former White House counsel during the Obama administration, was lead lawyer on a controversial Skadden report assessing the fairness of a trial of a Ukrainian prime minister. He worked on the report with Skadden associate Alex van der Zwaan, who has pleaded guilty to lying to investigators in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. Craig was of counsel at Skadden.

>General James Cartwright
WASHINGTON - President Obama on Tuesday pardoned James E. Cartwright, a retired Marine Corps general and former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who pleaded guilty to lying to the F.B.I. about his discussions with reporters about Iran's nuclear program, saving him from a possible prison sentence.
General Cartwright, who was a key member of Mr. Obama's national security team in his first term and earned a reputation as the president's favorite general, pleaded guilty late last year to misleading investigators looking into the leaking of classified information about cyberattacks against Iran.
He was due to be sentenced this month. His defense team had asked for a year of probation and 600 hours of community service, but prosecutors had asked the judge overseeing his case to send him to prison for two years.
Now, the retired general will be spared such punishment.
Both General Cartwright and his lawyer, Gregory Craig, a former White House counsel to Mr. Obama, thanked the president in statements.

n 1996, Craig was offered the post of White House Counsel by Bill Clinton, but Craig declined.[15] Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright appointed Craig to the post of director of policy planning at the State Department in 1997.[1][6] Craig served in that post from June 1997 to 1998.[6][14] As policy planning director, Craig served as a senior advisor to Albright[14] and led the State Department's internal think tank.[13] In October 1997, Albright gave Craig the additional post of special coordinator for Tibetan affairs, in order "to focus attention on China's suppression of Tibet's cultural and religious traditions."[14]
Craig worked in the White House during the Clinton administration from 1998 to 1999, holding the title of assistant to the President and special counsel.[6] Craig's old friend and law partner Kendall was Clinton's personal attorney.[8] Craig was brought on specifically to coordinate the White House's defense of Clinton during impeachment proceedings against him. Termed the "quarterback" by Clinton, Craig worked from the West Wing and oversaw legal, political, congressional, and public relations aspects of the defense, reporting regularly to President Clinton and consulting with John Podesta, the White House chief of staff.[8]
uring the Elián González affair in 2000, Craig represented Juan Miguel Gonzáles, the Cuban father of six-year-old Elián González
Other high-profile clients represented by Craig while at Williams & Connolly include Richard Helms, the ex-director of Central Intelligence who was convicted of lying to Congress over the CIA's role in removing Salvador Allende; UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan; and Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega.[13]
Craig met Barack and Michelle Obama for the first time in 2003, at the home of Vernon Jordan,
In 1981, Craig was a member of the team that represented John W. Hinckley, Jr.,
Craig attended Yale Law School, where he was a member of the same class as Bill Clinton, Hillary Rodham, and David E. Kendall
