Vigil in Ottawa to mark mosque attack cancelled due to safety concerns around convoy protest
Vigil to remember victims on 5th anniversary of attack will now be held virtually
An in-person vigil to remember the victims of a fatal attack on a Quebec City mosque exactly five years ago has been cancelled, with organizers citing safety concerns arising out of the presence of a convoy protesting vaccine mandates in Ottawa on Saturday.
The event, organized by the group Canadians United Against Hate, said it had been expecting more than 100 people at the only in-person event in the region organized to remember the Jan. 29, 2017, attack, which left six people dead and 19 wounded.
Originally meant to take place at the Human Rights Monument in downtown Ottawa, the event will now be held virtually on Saturday instead.

An Ottawa conference marking the 40th anniversary of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms saw a law professor lecture the government for not understanding "the very notion of freedom," as well as an independent media journalist chastise a panel member for calling Freedom Convoy protesters "human slime."
The government conference saw representatives from various human rights organizations speak to reporters both on Parliament Hill and virtually. Panellists included University of Ottawa law professor John Packer and Canadians United against Hate founder Fareed Khan.
A half-hour into the conference, Blacklock's Reporter's Tom Korski asked why no one had discussed the government's implementation of the Emergencies Act on Feb. 14. Continue…
