Subject: Re: Thanks
John, I wanted to add my personal thanks, too. Mark can be a demanding and inquisitive student, and he was both impressed and grateful for your time and candor. He's begun a challenging journey to direct his wealth to have an impact as great as Facebook and your ideas and perspectives really moved his thinking. I know he was focused on the kinds of structures he should put together, but now I suspect he'll be paying more attention to the types of people he needs - policy entrepreneurs and strategists - as he thinks about next steps. Any and all suggestions are welcome among folks you know or have worked with.
Please don't hesitate to reach out if there are things we can do to be helpful in you and your work - whether at CAP or elsewhere.
Have a great weekend,
Elliot

John,
I enjoyed spending time with you yesterday and our conversation gave me a lot to think about.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with CAP and some of the choices you made as you put the organization together. I hope it's okay if I reach out as my thinking develops to get your ideas and reactions.
If there are any other folks you think I should talk to, please let me know.
Thanks again. I look forward to continuing our conversation.

He was elected leader of the Liberal Democrats in December 2007.
Following the formation of the Coalition Government in May 2010 he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister.
In 2015 after a resounding election defeat for the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg resigned as leader describing the defeat as (in which he lost his own seat) - "immeasurably more crushing and unkind"
NIck Clegg
In a highly unusual announcement in 2018 having spent over 16 years in politics, it was announced that Nick had been hired as Vice President, Global Affairs & Communications at Facebook where he resides with his family in Menlo Park, USA.

Nick Clegg, the former British Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Democrats, recently announced that he was joining Facebook as its head of global policy, succeeding Elliot Schrage.
It's a first in many respects, not least because there are not many former politicians that have joined tech companies at that level of seniority. Up to now, it was mostly a few former operatives such as Airbnb's Chris Lehane (a veteran of the Clinton administration) and David Plouffe (who was the campaign manager of the Obama 2008 presidential campaign) who took up such posts. Richard Allan, the director of policy for Europe at Facebook EMEA, was a rare former elected official to have joined a US tech company (and as luck would have it, he was also Clegg's predecessor in the House of Commons).

Facebook to Fund Research on Social Media Impact on Elections
Facebook announced Monday its first research grants to academics studying the impact of social media on elections, part of an effort to prevent manipulation of social platforms.
The leading social network said some 60 researchers from 30 academic institutions across 11 countries were selected under a review process by the Social Science Research Council and the independent group Social Science One.
Facebook began the research initiative last year after revelations of foreign influence campaigns on the 2016 US election and the Brexit vote in Britain.
It began soliciting proposals last year, and on Monday unveiled its first research grants.
"To assure the independence of the research and the researchers, Facebook did not play any role in the selection of the individuals or their projects and will have no role in directing the findings or conclusions of the research," said a blog post by Facebook executives Elliot Schrage and Chaya Nayak.
"We hope this initiative will deepen public understanding of the role social media has on elections and democracy and help Facebook and other companies improve their products and practices."
The researchers will be granted access to Facebook's internal data through a "first-of-its-kind data sharing infrastructure to provide researchers access to Facebook data in a secure manner that protects people's privacy," Schrage and Nayak wrote.
"Some of these steps include building a process to remove personally identifiable information from the data set and only allowing researcher access to the data set through a secure portal."
Gary King and Nathaniel Persily of Social Science One said in a statement the researchers will seek to move swiftly to help social networks improve their security and integrity.
"The urgency of this research cannot be overstated," they wrote.
"Elections in India are already underway, the European Parliamentary elections will take place in short order, and the US presidential primary campaigns have begun in earnest. Concerns about disinformation, polarization, political advertising, and the role of platforms in the information ecosystem have not diminished. If anything, they have heightened."
Some of the research groups cited are based at Northeastern University, Ohio State University and New York University and Virginia Tech University in the United States; France's Institute of Political Studies; National Chengchi University in Taiwan; Italy's Universita di Urbino Carlo Bo; University of Sao Paulo in Brazil; Germany's Technical University of Munich; the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands; and Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile

Digs showing some possible connections between Google and FB, and possibly cross-pollination of CIA throughout both companies (and their creation?).
"Mark Zuckerberg loves to hire folks from Google . His poaching started in earnest last year, and includes Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, CFO Gideon Yu, and others. The latest is Elliot Schrage." (this was 2008)
https://techcrunch.com/2008/05/05/zuckerberg-hires-another-vp-from-google-Elliot-Schrage/
This guy Elliot Schrage is surely a company man (see scrshot above).
Schrage handled the Cambridge Analytical scandal, and then he took the fall and resigned last year for hiring a Republican-affiliated PR firm to push negative narratives about Facebook's competitors, namely Apple and Google. They were also involved in the Facebook-George Soros "scandal" that nobody cared about but was constantly in the news.
And then there's this from Wikileaks: In 2015, Mark Zuck wanted to meet with Podesta to get advice on how to spend all his money. Do you think they could have cooked up the stories to further the Russia, Russia, Russia Fake News Bots, and other narratives to push?
Elliot Shrage who is mentioned above is copied on emails. Sheryl Sandberg is COO of Facebook and was also hired from Google. Andrea Besmehn is Zuck's assistant.

acebook Scandal - Soros Wants US Congress To Investigate After Sandberg Lies Exposed
Earlier this week, when the New York Times exposed that Facebook had hired a PR firm to spread fake news (about George Soros and Apple among other things) in order to deflect attention away from the company, Ms Sheryl Sandberg appeared in various media and declared that she had never heard of the lobbying firm known as Definers.
She has now clarified those remarks further and said she 'had been told of the PR firm' but had not remembered its name.
The latest developments follow the social network's decision to publish a memo by its departing communications chief, Mr. Elliot Schrage.
n that document, he confirmed Facebook had directed the PR firm Definers to investigate Soros's links to the Freedom from Facebook campaign, which is seeking the company's break-up.
Soros Asks US Congress To Get Involved
The 180-degree turn and admission that the Facebook board did know about the firm has led to an uproar from Mr. Soros's personnel.

Soros Asks US Congress To Get Involved
The 180-degree turn and admission that the Facebook board did know about the firm has led to an uproar from Mr. Soros's personnel.
Definers is, amongst others, accused of spreading the story that Mr. Soros financially supported the 'Freedom from Facebook' campaign group.
The company also tried to portray Facebook's competitors, Apple and Google, negatively in news articles.
Tim Cook
Definers also worked for chipmaker Qualcomm, who is involved in a lawsuit against Apple for the use of modem patents. To upset Apple CEO Tim Cook, the lobbying company helped spread the rumor that Mr. Cook wanted to join the US presidential election in 2020.

Departing Facebook comms chief says critics were targeted
San Francisco (AFP) - The outgoing head of Facebook's communications team on Wednesday took responsibility for the hiring of a conservative consulting firm accused of using "black ops" style techniques, acknowledging critics including investor George Soros were targeted.
Facebook's chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg has pledged a "thorough" review of its use of Definers to deflect criticism from the social networking giant.
She and Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg maintain they were surprised by a New York Times story last week that said the social network was using Definers to link social network critics to liberal financier George Soros.
The Hungarian-born US financier and philanthropist is a favorite target of nationalists and anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists.
Definers was hired in 2017 as part of an effort to diversify its advisors in Washington, in the face of growing pressure by competitors and media companies for Facebook to be regulated by the government, Elliot Schrage said in a message to co-workers posted online.
"We asked Definers to do what public relations firms typically do to support a company - sending us press clippings, conducting research, writing messaging documents, and reaching out to reporters," Schrage said.
"As the pressure on Facebook built throughout the year, the Communications team used Definers more and more."
Definers began looking into Soros after the philanthropist labelled Facebook a "menace to society" in a speech at Davos early this year, according to Schrage.
"We had not heard such criticism from him before and wanted to determine if he had any financial motivation," Schrage said.
"Definers researched this using public information."

Q Research General #4478 Continous blessings of the NPC Meme
Facebook has hired the former UK deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, as its head of global affairs and communications, as the company faces increased pressure over the handling of data and fake news on its platform.
Clegg, who has spent much of his post-parliamentary career campaigning against Brexit, will now move to Silicon Valley, California, replacing Elliot Schrage, who in June announced that he was leaving the company.
The former MP had reportedly spent months trying to woo Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg. In November last year, Clegg issued a passionate defense of the company from "unfair criticism" by news organizations with "ulterior motives."
The tech giant has recently been reacting to governmental pressure over 'fake news' published on its platform, banning a multitude of accounts and pages in response.
The move came as a shock to much of the British political commentariat.
My timeline is intriguingly divided between people disappointed with Nick Clegg for going to work for Facebook and people disappointed with Facebook for hiring Nick Clegg.

Calamity Clegg left the Lib Dems close to deletion so his Facebook big bucks job will be cheered by Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat… https://t.co/Hm2htnknkW
- Kevin Maguire (@Kevin_Maguire) October 19, 2018
Clegg was a divisive figure while in coalition government with David Cameron's Tories, reneging on a host of Liberal Democrat manifesto pledges while in office.
The tech giant was possibly attracted to Clegg less for his time in UK office and more for his tenure as European Trade Commissioner. The Financial Times speculated that Facebook could seek to use his Brussels connections to navigate potential legal troubles brought about by the EU's General Data Protection Regulation.
The company has been riven with financial uncertainty. Its share price has dropped 27 percent since July, and the company has been rocked by the departure of senior executives since then. Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger jumped ship in September over a dispute with Zuckerberg about the future of the platform. WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum left Facebook in April, clashing with Zuckerberg over data privacy, advertising and encryption. Facebook owns both Instagram and WhatsApp.

In July, Colin Stretch, Facebook's top lawyer, announced he'd be leaving the company after more than eight years.
"When my wife Alyse and I made the decision a few years ago to move back to DC from California, we knew it would be difficult for me to remain in this role indefinitely," he said in a Facebook post.
Alex Stamos, formerly chief security officer at Facebook, formally stepped down in August following earlier rumors of his departure and an internal memo to staff.
Also in August, Dan Rose, one of Facebook's earliest executives and VP of partnerships, said he was leaving. Rose joined Facebook in 2006, and is leaving to join his family in Hawaii.
Earlier this week, Netflix announced it had poached Rachel Whetstone, a top communications executive at Facebook. Whetstone had only been at the company for a year. She is the only executive on this list not to comment on her exit on her personal Facebook account. She follows her boss, Schrage, in leaving.
That brings us to Wednesday, when Alex Hardiman, head of news products, announced her departure. Hardiman had been at Facebook for what she called "two deeply gratifying years," and will join The Atlantic.
"I've always been a news person. It's my passion during the workday and my guilty pleasure on nights and weekends,"
