Approval of Catholic Church in Poland dips to nearly 30yr low amid pedophilia scandal & protests over new abortion restrictions
Public opinion of the Catholic Church in Poland is the lowest it has been since the early 1990s, a new poll shows. The clergy's reputation was damaged by recent sexual abuse allegations and protests over restrictive abortion laws.
The results of the CBOS poll published by Polish media earlier this week showed that 47 percent had a negative view of the activities of the Catholic Church in the country, compared to just 41 percent who viewed the Church's activities favorably. The survey was conducted between November 30 and December 10, and included 1,010 people.
This is the lowest approval rating the Church has had since 1993. Investigative website OKO.press reported that people were dismayed by its "excessive" role in social and political life that year - a strict anti-abortion law took effect that January and Warsaw signed a treaty with the Vatican several months later. The situation now seems to have repeated itself, as many Poles are angered by new restrictions on abortion and dismayed that the clergy have been embroiled in sex abuse scandals.
The Catholic Church traditionally plays an important role in Poland, especially compared to fellow EU nations. The bishops and the Catholic media are considered one of the bedrocks of the support of the ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party.
However, the Church's approval rating has been steadily declining in recent years. Its positive perception dropped below 50 percent in May 2019, which coincided with the premiere of a documentary about the sexual abuse of young boys by the Polish clergy. The film caused an uproar, receiving more than 20 million views on YouTube in just eight days.
The scandal was followed by the resignation of Edward Janiak, a bishop at the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kalisz, who was accused of shielding the priests that were implicated in abusing children.
The Church's reputation took another dent in October, when the country's highest court removed severe fetus deformities from the already short list of reasons for which a woman is legally permitted to seek an abortion. The ruling immediately sparked widespread protests across the country.
Some senior priests have spoken dismissively about the women at the frontline of the protest rallies. Marek Jedraszewski, the influential Archbishop of Krakow, gave a sermon this week, blasting the "Julki" - a slur used for a young female left-wing activists - who wanted to become "an encore to the man." The archbishop said women attending rallies should pay attention to how they dress and speak, and ask themselves "by what right do they deviate from the model of femininity, the highest example of which was given to us by the Holy Mother."
The fierce protests ultimately forced the government to miss the deadline for the certification of the court ruling, which has indefinitely delayed the implementation of the new abortion restrictions.

Polish bishop resigns following accusations of failing to act on abuse
BY JUNNO AROCHO ESTEVES, CATHOLIC NEWS SERVICE
October 19, 2020
VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis accepted the resignation of a Polish bishop accused of negligence after a documentary claimed he repeatedly transferred a priest accused of sexually abusing children.
The Vatican announced Oct. 17 that the pope accepted the resignation of 68-year-old Bishop Edward Janiak of Kalisz and named Archbishop Grzegorz Rys of Lodz as apostolic administrator "sede vacante."
In June, the Vatican had appointed Archbishop Rys as apostolic administrator "sede plena," indicating that the see was not vacant.
Bishop Janiak's failure to act when told about allegations of abuse perpetrated by a diocesan priest drew a public outcry following the May 16 release of the documentary, "Hide and Seek," produced by Polish filmmakers Marek and Tomasz Sekielski.
The film was a follow-up to their 2019 documentary "Tell No One," which exposed the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church in Poland and has garnered nearly 24 million views on YouTube.
In "Hide and Seek," the filmmakers accused the Polish church of continuing to cover up sexual abuse by Catholic clergy, and specifically detailed the abuse perpetrated by a priest of the Diocese of Kalisz.
Several victims said the priest, Father Arkadiusz Hajdasz, began abusing them in the late 1990s. Bishop Stanislaw Napierala had led the Diocese of Kalisz from 1992 to 2012, and Bishop Janiak since 2012.
The parents of one of the abused children reportedly told Bishop Janiak in 2016 about the abuse; they claim the bishop told them, "These are lies," and asked them to leave.
Father Hajdasz was transferred to position at a local hospital, and the bishop apparently did not report the case to the Vatican until 2018 when the accusations became more publicly known.
The documentary prompted Archbishop Wojciech Polak, primate of Poland and the bishops' delegate for child protection, to request the Vatican to start the proceedings allowed for by Pope Francis in the document, "Vos Estis Lux Mundi" ("You are the light of the world"), regarding bishop accountability.

"Pope removes Polish bishop accused of sex abuse cover-up"
"ROME (AP) - Pope Francis on Saturday permanently removed a Polish bishop who was kicked out of his diocese a few months ago pending a Vatican investigation into allegations he covered up cases of sexual abuse by his priests.
The resignation of Edward Janiak as bishop of Kalisz suggests the Vatican was able to substantiate at least some elements of the accusations made in a documentary about sex abuse in Poland that has undermined the country's influential Catholic hierarchy.
Francis on Saturday accepted Janiak's resignation and confirmed the archbishop of Lodz, Grzegorz Rys, as the diocese's temporary administrator. At 68, Janiak is well below the normal retirement age of 75 for bishops.
Francis in June had ordered Janiak to leave Kalisz and forbade him from having any influence on how the diocese is run pending the investigation.
In May, the online documentary "Playing Hide and Seek" exposed two cases of pedophile priests that Janiak handled, first as an auxiliary bishop of Wroclaw and then as bishop of Kalisz, which he had headed since 2012.
It featured court testimony about Janiak's role in helping transfer one priest, subsequently convicted and defrocked, from Wroclaw to another diocese even after a criminal investigation had begun. The film also documented an alleged cover-up relating to another priest during Janiak's time as Kalisz bishop.
The film was the second on Polish clergy abuse to be made by brothers Tomasz and Marek Sekielski. Their first film last year, "Tell No One," triggered a national reckoning in a country where there is no higher moral authority than the Catholic Church and its clergy.
The Polish bishops conference, in reporting the news on its website Saturday, simply posted a statement from the Vatican ambassador to Poland reporting that Janiak had resigned and Rys would be the "apostolic administrator" of Kalisz until the position is permanently filled."

Film accuses Polish church of continued abuse cover-up

"WARSAW, Poland - The centenary of the birth of St. John Paul II coincided with a new film, "Hide and Seek," screened on YouTube May 16. It accused the Polish church of continuing to cover up sexual abuse by Catholic clergy.
The same day, Archbishop Wojciech Polak, primate of Poland and the bishops' delegate for child protection, said he would ask the Vatican to initiate proceedings against Bishop Edward Janiak of Kalisz for failing to discipline a priest incriminated by the film.
Archbishop Polak said the film showed required child protection standards were still not being observed in the Polish church.
"I thank the victims who talked about the harm they suffered, and I urge everyone with knowledge about the sexual abuse of a minor to remember they are obliged in conscience and by law" to notify authorities, Archbishop Polak said."
